i know this isn't really what you were talking about lskdkj but even just as a dynamic jercy pisses me off in canon bc rr clearly wanted them to be THE narrative foils of hoo but he didn't write in ANY nuance for them. like their dynamic is so built up as the leaders of their respective camps and opposite personalities and the different ways they go abt being Heroes but they r so boring and almost never interact... it's laughable comparing them to luke and percy in pjo who actually pulled off the Main Narrative Foils thing 😭

you're sooo right. i think it's because like riordan couldn't decide what to do with percy? he was meant to be a main character but also a side character. the lost trio was clearly set up to be The Focus Trio of the series-- they were all overpowered with little to no training the story began and ended with them and they were led by the Superman-eque Boy so u know it's meant to be about them

the reason luke and percy worked is because at some point luke saw himself in percy, just as percy saw a better future for himself in luke. they were similar in all ways but one- percy was guided predominantly by love and luke was guided predominantly by anger. the funny part about it is that luke did feel love at a very deep level, just as percy felt anger on a very deep level- it was what each character chose to act upon that made them different. that's a personality. that is what a narrative foil is meant to do: draw comparisons in character.

the percy/jason dynamic is so badly done because they aren't even friends. we don't actually see them as similar. sure, they fill in the same role at their respective camps: their lives may be symmetrical, but they themselves aren't that similar. are they both buried under responsibility? sure. but their core struggles are not even remotely the same. percy has already passed jason's current phase. he knows where he belongs, knows his role in the world, knows how to bear his burden. his problems come now from controlling the same flaws that he saw in LUKE, who remains a mirror to him despite being dead and gone. percy and jason aren't on the same journey!!

also this is a bit nit-picky, i know, but i find the whole 'jason is boring because he's a narrative foil to Interesting percy' SO so annoying lkjsdkfsjkf. first of all- i don't think characters who are straight-laced, morally inflexible, and tight lipped soldier types are boring. one dimensional, trope-filling characters are boring. jason didn't have to be a sarcastic quick witted impulsive lil shit to be fun! personally i don't think he's boring at all!! he's as full of wasted potential as any of the other hoo characters- they are all there to fill a role and be a trope. percy, annabeth, and nico are not exempt from it. a lot of what we know to be true about them are erased in hoo so that they will 'give space' to the new kids to fulfill their old role. it's so dumb and so offensive!!!

i'm sorry for talking so much, i'll wrap it up now but basically what i mean to say is: jason and percy don't work because jason is literally the lead while percy is reduced to comedic relief by the end. it's fine- not every stroy has to be centered around percy, but it makes drawing comparisons between them so cheap and tacky. they're not character foils. they're barely even in the same story. they're just two boys who kind of tolerate each other and pretend to be best friends with absolutely no explanation or chemsitry slkdjfklsdfj

percabeth - 11/10, i actually love them so much i don’t think there is a single ship i love more than them.

grover/juniper - 7/10, they’re cute, i just feel like there’s no depth there. also wasn’t grover willing to cheat on her with that daughter of iris?!?! correct me if im wrong but …🤨

jiper - 2/10, actual snoozefest like i’m sorry but it’s just copy and paste percabeth without everything that makes percabeth good. also they’re both queer and were forced into the relationship by hera/juno

valgrace - 10/10, I LOVE THEM. the tragedy the trope i just. ugh i love them

caleo - -890/10, hate it.

jercy - 9/10, they’re silly, also love a good enemies to lovers trope. at the VERY LEAST they both had a lil crush on each other

percico - 1/10, it rubs me in all the wrong ways, especially with the age gap and the nature of their relationship. i can’t see them as anything but friends who occasionally run into each other and have awkward catch-ups. obviously love the unrequited crush but the relationship is . Different

solangelo - 9/10, used to hate them but then i read s&ts and cut them some slack. just wish will was an actual character instead of just “nico’s boyfriend :3”

jeyna - 8/10 SO much potential but i still feel like it would kind of be basic. also reyna kind of throwing away the idea of being with jason when percy showed up was odd

pipabeth - 10/10, silly silly silly. i love them. also love the idea of a little polycule with percabeth and pipabeth and jercy. i’ll shut up now

valdangelo - 10/10, almost feels like what rick wanted solangelo to be. like sunshine character with a tragic past x dark character with a tragic past in its prime. they’re also hilarious

frazel - i DESPISE the age gap. i wish rick would have just made her 16 like everyone else because 13 x 16 is such a huge gap in emotional maturity. she’s a kid dawg 😭🙏 OTHER than that they’re cute, but i really hate the gap

valzhang - 7/10, honestly can’t see frank being into leo LIKE that but it’s a fun ship, they’re honestly so silly especially in mark of athena. they hate each other (besties (boyfriends))

jasico - 10/10, Oh the tragedy i can’t take this. like if it wasn’t tragic i wouldn’t like it if that makes sense. but the image of nico needing to be held back from shadows so he won’t freak out and avenge jason himself Ohhhh yeah that hits hard

Let's talk about how Percy is not only extremely coded as a femme trans woman who tries to act like a 'manly' cis dude out of repression and trauma based off her personality alone but how it also shows in her relathionships with the other female characters-Her girlfriend is the most lesbian-coded girl in the entire franchise aside from the intentional lesbians AND a tomboy/baby butch to boot,her ex is while not exactly coded a LOT like irl lesbians too and they remained best friends post-breakup which is an extremely common experience among eggs and their cis girl friends,her other two potential female love interests(Calypso and Reyna)also heavily reflect lesbian experiences-and that means EVERY SINGLE GIRL THAT HAS HAD A CRUSH ON PERCY is sapphic,this one is just me and i don't exactly ship them but i can see Clarisse being into exactly one 'guy' and it ain't Chris and her admiration and intial envy of Thalia works for this too since Thalia herself has an insane amount of tgirl swag in design and personality AND story.And the kicker?Even if you take into account Percy's relathionships with the male characters she gets shipped with most,Luke's abuse of her parallels his of the other girls,Jason's been reinforced as straight multiple times so you wouldn't even have to go against canon to make Jercy work and Nico-The Riordanverse's first canon gay-stopped crushing on her SPECIFICALLY because she's not 'the ideal man' like he thought she was.Persephone 'Percy' 'Ocean Girl' Amelia Jackson you are so fucking real

Jason and Percy are not the same. Percy wants to honour minor gods because he believes their treatment is unjust and wants to help them on an empathetic and moral level. Jason wants to honour minor gods so they don't kill the people he loves.

#Just to be clear #I’m not saying that one is better than the other #only that even though they advocated for the same solution #in a way #the sentiment is quite different #Percy’s solution was borne out of a child’s feelings #an idealistic idea that means that no one is left out #mostly borne out of empathy for Luke Ethan and Calypso #but because it is grounded on the idea of deservingness and justice #and because he’s a child #he’s unable to fully come to terms with the details of who deserves this #on the other hand #Jason’s solution is a means to an end #honouring the gods prevents them from killing demigods #in that case he can fake it #if the gods would kill him even if he honoured them #then he would drop that strategy immediately #(maybe for that specific god) #because the purpose and intended outcome is clear #it becomes harder for Percy to push through with his solution #because the real world challenges his ideals #and the feasibility of his solution #whereas Jason is able to push through his solution #but also easy to convince him out of it since it’s not tied to his values #what Jason’s solution ultimately reflects is his belief in peace achieved through non-violent means #which is beautiful because I think he learnt that from Percy and the other Seven #while sadly the core of Percy’s solution is that if the gods are happy #so too will their children #and his experience with the Seven and in Tartarus proves not only that that isn’t true #but that there are people he is willing to abandon as ‘bad people’ #he becomes more logical and more willing to trade lives #it’s no accident that Jason and Percy traded camps by the end of HoO #Camp Jupiter operates independently #and relies heavily on their military #creating a safe haven where people create new lives there #while Camp Half-Blood operates through family units #and capitalises on unique talents to win battles #creating a system where people can go for respite and then return to their mortal families #Percy and Jason both choose the opposite camp #Percy to Camp Jupiter for the unreliance on the gods #and the new life and safety #Jason to Camp Half-Blood for the chance to see his family #and the possibility of exploring different sides of himself #of course there are many more reasons than that but these are the parallels here #and I maintain that Percy and Jason were never truly foils and rather worked better as parallels #by the end of the series they share the most similar values because they’ve assimilated to one another #we were robbed of Percy and Jason’s friendship #and also more group project giant storms #I’ll end my rant by saying that I think they should’ve been so much closer on the Argo II #but like platonically #but those of you that ship Jercy go for it #arguably they’re both bad influences and good influences on each other #Jason in a ‘six hundred lives at stake its just one life to take’ kind of way #and Percy in a ‘be gay do crime’ kind of way #kay bye that’s all from me

Okay , so I had a pretty big brain moment today and I realised there are so MANY parallels between pjo and Actual Greek mythology. Although I doubt Rick knew what he was doing and maybe it's just some coincidences ... But I'm pretty sure the Two of these were glaringly obvious and intentional

Zeus-Poseidon : Percy - Jason : Honestly this rivalry is EXTREMELY overrated. Jason and Percy both kinda (or at least should) loathe their godly parents. So I want them to be best bros . I don't have anything against Jercy either. So yeah ... This rivalry was extremely unnecessary and cliché

Demeter-Hades : Meg - Nico : I gotta say they have an adorable dynamic , it's nice

In real mythology Poseidon was a god who frequently got into fights with various gods , Just like Percy.(and providing that by showing Jason Percy rivalry is a really basic and poor way to show that) ,. So I like to believe , that as much as Percy is loved , he has just as many haters too.

Without further ado let me explain the rest, hear me out :

Percy - Piper dynamic: in real mythology , Poseidon had a rivalry with Aphrodite. They were both in a relationship with Nerites (the only brother of the 50 neirids) . And that was quite a fight. I like to believe that Piper not finding Percy attractive was a way to express the grudge she had on him because ,well Piper had quite a crush on Annabeth (which may or may not be just as bad as Nico's crush on Percy). I like to believe Annabeth was her lesbian awakening. But she got over it eventually. Okay I get it, that Percy is the hottest demigod on the planet. But let people have crushes on Annabeth too. So yeah , Piper did not like Percy right away.

But Later on Piper and Percy bonded over loving the sea , and having one of the best Brotps , because both their parents are related to the sea.

Silena-Clarisse: Sorry to Silena × Beckendorf shippers , but Silena actually loved Clarisse and wanted to die wearing her armour (which is a nice reference to patrochilles and I cry over it more often than you can imagine , I'm not talking about it here). Silena grew up hearing that Aphrodite was an ultimate male magnet and that she had to live up to it. She was so sick of following the heteronormative ways that she held a grudge against her mother and went on to join Luke's army. But that's not the point.

The point is Aphrodite was forced to marry Hephaestus , but her heart belonged to Ares. The same way the heteronormativity forced Silena to pretend to date Beckendorf (a child of Hephaestus) , but her heart belonged to Clarisse (a child of Ares) , ouch.

Annabeth and Percy rivalry (before they got together): okay , Rick made a major mistake by making Annabeth a Mary Sue kind of character (while trying to portray their die hard rivalry and failing miserably). Because oh my god, the possibilities ?? of ?? Athena - Poseidon rivalry !!! Need I say more ? They faught like cats and dogs.

Poseidon: Oddeysus can't return to his wife and will wander the sea

Athena: Haha , he's my son now , I've adopted him.

And

Poseidon: This land shall be mine !

Athena , turns around on the chair she was sitting in: You're late to the party. But you sure do deserve a temple in Athens . Well bestie ,you tried.

Imagine the chemistry Annabeth and Percy could've had. Pure enemies to friends to lovers. I mean , that's already the plot, but it'd have been better if Annabeth and Percy would've been more competitive. You know what I mean ?

Lastly Will and Percy rivalry: Even though this isn't canon , I am 100% sure it's canon. We consider it canon. Apollo and Poseidon faught not once but twice. They're the literal definition of 'the boys'. Including that one time both Poseidon and Apollo were cast down as humans.

Will and Percy clearly have exactly the same kind of dynamic. They fight on the smallest of the matters. And it's almost comical to see two grown up boys fighting over what bathbombs taste like (I'm pretty sure Will and Percy have had a bathbomb eating competition).

These are just my takes on them , feel free to add more if you find any .

They were kinda meant to have a spark in every way-Tons of similarities but a few significant contrasts that don't lead to toxicity but instead them being complimentary and good for eachother,the beef between Zeus and Poseidon and how much Percy fucking despises her dad and Jason wanting to be completely free of Jupiter,Percy's severe older men trauma and Jason's defiement of what men are 'supposed' to be that's influenced by his transmasculinity but also a genuine effort on his part and connection with Percy that women are inherently better caused by the misogyny he also faced pre-egg cracking and even some afterwards from particularly big jerks and Jason being Hazel's pseudo-dad pre-Hoo and Percy being Nico's pseudo-mom before All That Fuckshit.Obviously they're not perfect together based off that last part alone and Jason's mostly a hc but it's certainly better than adultifiying Hazel!!

Back to the Percy older men trauma thing,i think we all picked up on how Weird And Unnecessary Luke is towards her in canon and i won't get into it so it dosen't get triggering but even though he never dated her,his frequent and looming presence combined with his again canon pedophile status to her own best friends(Annabeth and Thalia)and another friend of hers she felt awful for not keeping an eye on(Silena),he left scars on her regarding manhood that only fueled her transfemininity and hatred of the gods and Apollo in particular due to his treatment of the Hunters and 'history'.Jason's entire Percy appeal is despite the looks,he acts nothing like how boys are taught to and punished if they don't and the closest exception is how gentlemanly and chilvarious is he but even then that's black dude swag specifically

Percy is 4d,Jason is 4c.Her usual style is comics!Starfire hair i.e down to her hips and BIG FLOOF,his is shoulder length and his natural very thick curls.They have wash day together and Percy's uses fruity shampoos and gets Jason to do the same and they try out different looks together-Percy's favorites are butterfly locs,a blk version of mermaid waterfall and jumbo ponytail and Jason's are twists,afropuffs and at one point he got an afro fade with a lightning bolt and Petcy damn near forgot how to breathe

Nico's also black(Maria was black-italian)so cute lil found black family sitch.He could NOT stand Jason's ass at first for no reason,he's just a posessive brat over his big sister slash mom but Jason proved himself not too much into it by defeating Cupid before he even got a hint of what he was tryna get out of him and Jason telling him that he only cared Cupid was forcing him into something earned him lifelong trust.They're an official quartet as off Hoo finale and Jason makes regular trips to the Familia Jackson household and they have both quests and normal adventures and they can be found doing just about anything together from wholesome down to earth activities to buck ass wild supernatural shenanigans

Hazel's also a lesbian and pastel goth so her and Jason's semi-normie ass have a lot of fun getting to know eachother again /gen /pos.Naturally they talk about their gfs with Hazel's love life being as Mabel Pines-esque as she is by herself and Jason is goofy black dad from a sitcom-coded and supports her in her nonchalantly macabe nature and you can just feel the rekindled familial love there like you can Nico and Percy and when Jercy finally have their bio kids,Nico and Hazel become the best Tío and Auntie ever

Jason is Percy's All American Boy in a black biracial kinda way and Percy is Jason's Girl Next Door in an afrolatina kinda way

Something something The Man with his head in the clouds and The Mermaid who keeps her head above the water meet where the sky and the sea do and their worlds are forever transformed by it as they become just one united

Thanks for playing! Now that, I don't think I've talked about that often yet.

The biggest appeal of Jercy is the whole two sides of the same coin thing they have going on.

The leader of the Romans and the leader of the Greeks.

The ocean and the sky.

The son of Jupiter and the son of Poseidon.

The two boys who got kidnapped and memory-wiped by Hera to be used like puppets in her little mind-games.

Two characters who kind of complete each other are just really good for ships and those two literally did that like Riordan had them brew up the perfect storm together, highlighting how complementary their powers are and mmmh yes gotta love that.

I think that by the end of HoO, they are both in unique positions where no one really understands what they went through aside from each other and there is just such a specific kind of solace they can give each other based on that.

Also the budding bromance they had started to form in the books, like it's not just that they have these superficial parallels, they also got along on top of that.

You make my jercy heart sing, after so long. Like honestly? They were such perfect parallels of each other even if rick never fleshed it out completely? Percy grew up with the love of his mother and later had to learn to be a great hero, while jason grew up with wolves and at a military camp and all these expectations and later found family in his friendships. And there's so much more!!! I wish theyd been written and fast bestfriends rather than competion. ( sorry this is rambly and random!)

"Besides Solangelo, what are your top 10 ships and why? Which are your least favorite ships?" uh idk riordanverse ig?

I dont really have a specific order for riordanverse, so this is more of a general order, but you can kind of tell that the sooner I mention it the more I like it, although not always precisely (I'm awkward, sorry).

Recently I've become quite fond of Perachel, which'll probably bring up some controversy. Honestly, it's mainly to do with the fact that I think Percabeth is pretty toxic. I also ship Valdangelo, although technically I tend to lean more towards Soldezangelo, but it's quite hard to find stuff for such an obscure one, hence why in general, I tend to stick to Solangelo. Theyna's pretty popular for me, however we respect Reyna's sexuality (it would be kinda hypocritical for me not to) so that's completely romantic. In terms of Frazel, I think it's cute when Hazel is 15, but if she's her canon age, then that's a definite no- for obvious reasons. A bit of an obscure one but Sirisse (Clarisse and Silena). This is mainly because of the parallels to Patrochilles, which is definitely one of my favourite ships, although considering Patroclus isn't even mentioned in pjo (I don't think so, anyway), i decided it was probably not the best to include it. Yeah, tsoa is one of my favourite books, and if you haven't read it, I really would reccomend. Pipabeth has definitely got to be up there pretty high in the top ten too, although that may be heavily influenced by my dislike for both Percabeth and Jasper (the latter because I don't like that it's forced, although I'm not denying that Jason probably did like Piper). This one's certainly grown on me recently. Valgrace is okay. I like the dynamic, and would probably work in a different fandom, although, to me at least, Jason is as straight as a ruler. Reading Ella and Tyson together (I don't know if anyone knows their ship name?) was really cute for me, and I definitely wouldn't change it, although I did notice that Lavinia and Poison Oak were the only canon -or fanon for that matter- ship that involved a demigod with someone who wasn't a demigod (we don't speak of Pertemis). That made me a bit uncomfortable, although it might just be me, because it has parallels to real world racism. I do also ship Lavinia and Poison Oak, even though we don't ever see them together (I haven't actually finished tower of nero because I'm savouring it, so I could be wrong), I just think that what we've seen of them separately would definitely work well together.

Besides the obvious before mentioned ships and Thalico (just... no), I really don't like Caleo or Jercy at all. The first seems both rushed and toxic, and I really didn't like that it's only purpose was so Leo wasn't single. Also, I can definitely see Calypso just using Leo to get off of Ogygia then dumping him. I hate to say this, because I stan Leo, but I would much rather have had him killed (and probably kept Jason alive; it would've been a lot more emotional to be honest) than have them together. All they do is argue, and not in a joking or flirting way, either. I'm not very keen on Jercy, mainly because Jason and Percy barely put up with eachother, and only do because they both have to lead the rest of the seven. If they were to hold a lasting relationship, it would most definitely be toxic. I've already mentioned that I see Jason as straight, but if he had to be dating someone who wasn't a girl, I'd much rather take Valgrace. Also, ignoring Leo can be unintentionally racist, because it's just sort of like "oh, yeah, I'm gonna ignore a poc who would actually work in a relationship with him for a white boy he barely knows.".

Yeah, sorry for ranting a little; I don't get asks very often, so when I do, I get very excited.
