UNRELIABLE NARRATORS; SIDE C
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dr. John Watson Propaganda:
He literally admits that he changes his stories. "One day the true stories may be told"? Do I need to say more?
Gideon Nav Propaganda:
(Spoilers for Ht9) She just. Fully ignores most of the magic plot happening around her in the first boom to be a dyke. In the second book it’s even less reliable and it’s fully fucking insane. It’s first person but she’s telling YOU (harrow) what is happening and it’s impossible to decipher. The appearance and personality of every character is fully morphed by Gideon’s mean dykishness.
MASSIVE spoilers. Like even mentioning that this is a thing is a huge fucking spoiler. I normally don’t care about spoilers that much but I legitimately feel awful for anyone with even a passing interest in reading these books who has this spoiled for them. Anyway. Yeah turns out the second-person narration is actually a first-person narration by the dead girl living in Harrow’s head whose death traumatized Harrow (and the entire fandom) so badly that she literally lobotomized herself to forget it and give Gideon a chance at not having her soul digested.
constantly adds her own commentary, does not pay attention to the interesting moving parts of the plot bc she's too busy looking at pretty girls, cannot be trusted to read her own intentions correctly never mind anyone else's. I love her dearly
she just doesn’t notice or doesn’t give a shit about a ton of plot-essential information. Harrow and Palamedes are talking about a necromantic theorem that would blow open the entire story if we could hear them? You can instantly feel Gideon’s eyes glaze over and her mind wander to the nearest available hot girl, and our attention goes with her. It’s handled so smoothly that you might not even notice it happening until a second or third read.
More Propaganda under cut!
Gideon Nav is all but useless as a narrator, and we love her for it. So first of all, she knows absolutely nothing. She grew up under a rock. Almost literally. When the plot is happening near her, she almost never tells us about it. Politics, history, and the magic system are boring. Let her know when there's something she can FIGHT. She also has very selective emphasis and focus that can change a scene completely without ever actually lying. She can tell the same story—to us, in her third-person narration as a factual recounting—and in one version the incident will be a schoolyard scuffle, while a later telling will reveal it to have been a near-homicide. She'll confidently interpret other character's motivations and emotions, only to later be proven wrong. But the thing that makes her REALLY unreliable? She lies to HERSELF constantly. She will tell us in her narration that she doesn't give a shit where someone disappeared to, and then spend the whole day searching for them. She'll say she hates someone, when. Well....
okay so i am actually going to do one segment about her own book and one about harrow’s so many apologies and also many spoilers ahead okay? okay so in gideon the ninth it’s a well known thing that she’s an unreliable narrator on two fronts: she lies to herself and therefore us about how she’s feeling and what she’s thinking, and also she isn’t paying attention to the plot at all. the only things she pays any attention to are hot girls, swords, and hot girls with swords. at one point she watches their only way out be sealed off and is so bored about it that she goes to sleep watching it happen, taking absolutely no note of “oh hey they’re trapping us here”. later someone asks IN FRONT OF HER “hey where did all our shuttles go” and shes like “😌😌😌😌😌😌😌😌😌” and still does not make the connection. babygirl. but THEN!!!!! in HARROW the ninth (MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD) gideon is the narrator the ENTIRE TIME (except for the revised canaan house parts) and not only does she editorialize, she also straight up lies about events and motivations! partially justified by her being inside harrow’s head, but like. babygirl. beloved. the interjections of “holy fuck” and “pommel” and othersuch things is so important to my mental health and wellbeing. thank you. thank you for lying to us so so much.

The Adventure of the Final Problem: Edwards' Illustrations
While I'm still grieving and preparing myself to compare my edition in Spanish with the OG, I looked for more book illustrations.
This time I wanto to show Edwards' work for this story, a bit less known than Sidney's illustrations.
Harry Clay Edwards (1868-1922) was an American periodical illustrator and painter. Between 1894 and 1896, he did 27 illustrations for Arthur Conan Doyle's fictions in McClure's.
All the images are available here if you want to see them.

This Moriarty looks like he could fight Holmes
Tumblr media
And the moment of the duel...
THE GIRLS ARE FIGHTIIIIIING!!!!!! I love how Moriarty tries to use Holmes' clothes as a handle with his left hand on Sherlock collar while Holmes go directly to his neck and hair.
Sorry, but this but Moriarty fight like my classmates in primary school where was more important to mess your rival hair that leave bruises. Weird memories

Good Omens Victorian headcanon I came up with today:
Sometime between 1881 and 1886 (several decades after leaving Crowley in St James Park and a few years before his instruction in the Gavotte), Aziraphale goes on a daytrip to Southsea in Portsmouth to intercede in the case of a young doctor whose practice is failing and stop him abandoning his calling.
After his mission goes unintentionally and dramatically (and probably hilariously) awry, Aziraphale uses too many miracles in front of the doctor, giving him reason to confide in his new friend, Alfred Wilks Drayson, the president of the Portsmouth Literary and Scientific Society, and, at his suggestion, begin a series of investigations into the possibility of psychic phenomena and a lifelong belief in the supernatural and spiritualism.
Aziraphale is however successful in his mission: Dr Arthur Conan Doyle sells his first Sherlock Holmes mystery, A Study In Scarlet, to Ward Lock &Co. in November 1886, having used his mysterious intervenor as the basis for the character of… Dr Watson.
Tumblr media
Also: Part of their meeting involves Conan Doyle blushing my brining up a new genre he’s interested in writing, detective fiction, and Aziraphale immediately gushing about Edgar Allen Poe and ‘The Murders in the Rue Morgue’ and how great the character of C. Auguste Dupin is, which annoys Conan Doyle so much that he adds a bit to A Study in Scarlet where Holmes describes Dupin as “a very inferior fellow”.
Also: the mission goes so wrong it’s the reason Aziraphale later gets a gun licence.
Additional Fun Fact: Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s son, Adrian, later wrote an additional Sherlock Holmes mystery called ‘The Adventure of the Dark Angels’… 🤔
Tumblr media
The Two Fixed Points in a Changing Age’?! That’s somehow a Good Omens fanfic title right there.
(No it’s not a real Strand Magazine I know, but that title was too good!)
This headcanon partially inspired by @gargoyle-doyle ‘s posts about Neil Gaiman’s family having had a grocers in Portsmouth - (which for some reason I can’t link because paste isn’t working) and because I used to live round the corner from where Conan Doyle’s practice had been, and up the road from the Portsmouth Museum which has half an entire floor dedicated to Conan Doyle and Holmes.

This kinda reminds me of the little kids I see at the library when they don't wanna leave so they (literally) drag their feet, until their parent decides to just carry them the rest of the way out!

the illustrious client might not be the best mystery but it's such a fun case. watson being Unhinged (learning chinese pottery in 24 hours/telling holmes that he would kick gruner's ass if holmes just gave the word). holmes openly burglarizing gruner's house and not giving af or facing prosecution. kitty winters getting her revenge by tossing vitriol and getting the lightest sentence possible for it. it's so funny.

In 1939, a time traveler from an undisclosed time in the 20th Century travelled back to Berlin to try and assassinate Adolf Hitler and prevent World War II. He ran out of time before he could accomplish his goal and history continued on its natural course. ("No Time Like the Past", The Twilight Zone, TV)

UNRELIABLE NARRATORS; SIDE C

Kvothe Propaganda:
OKAY SO! for one thing we know for a fact that his perception of denna is different from the reality of her, but that’s the tiniest fucking TIP of the ice berg, because: WE DO NOT EVEN KNOW IF ANYTHING HE HAS TOLD US THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE COURSE OF THE STORY REALLY HAPPENED!!!!!!!!!! we know skarpi is real because chronicler knows him, we know denna is real because bast met her (if that even was the real denna) BUT WE HAVE NO FUCKING CLUE ABOUT THE ENTIRE REST OF IT !!!!!! HE COULD BE LYING OUT HIS ASS WITH EVERY WORD OUT OF HIS MOUTH!!!!!!!!! WE SIMPLY DO NOT KNOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LORD AND LADY I ENT EVER MET A LIAR LIKE YOU IN ME WHOLE LIFE <- ACTUAL THING SAID TO HIM WITHIN THE BOOKS, IN THE FRAME STORY, WHICH WE KNOW *IS* REAL
Kvothe (now just an innkeeper called Kote) is a man who faked his death to escape his status as a legendary hero, criminal, and villain, depending on who you ask. In the books, he admits he's lied and spread some of the more flashy legends about himself for his own purposes, but he agrees to tell his *true* life story over the course of three days. There are times he contradicts himself, brushes over details, or goes into his more extravagant deeds, but it's pretty much always in question as to how much of it is true, how much is clouded by his nostalgia for the past, and how much could be an intentional lie. I LOVE these books and I love Kvothe :)
he narrates most of the book where he is sooo good at everything and learns things very very fast and gets all the women. yeah mhm. he skips over one thing that is a huge myth because it isn't really interesting to him.
there's a frame narrative consisting of Kvothe telling the main story in order to have it recorded. there's several instances where situations are only vaguely described because Kvothe at the time wasn't mentally sound enough to remember all of them. there's also a big argument to be made for him leaving out or changing parts of his story on purpose (he even points out that, since it's his story, he's entitled to some changes if he thinks they're necessary), mostly I think he depicts his teenage self as much less of a dumbass than he actually was
Dr. John Watson Propaganda:
He literally admits that he changes his stories. "One day the true stories may be told"? Do I need to say more?
