Grace and the Mean Girl

Get in loser, we’re talking about Grace Monroe

Grace is a very interesting character to mean, perhaps best summarized by Lindsay Katai describing her somewhat paradoxically as a “mean girl full of love.” I think it’s interesting, because usually the archetype of “troubled yet spoiled rich girl” in the media usually starts out cold and snobbish (ex., Gravity Falls’ Pacifica Northwest, The Owl House’s Amity Blight, RWBY’s Weiss Schnee). Not to say Grace does not demonstrate those characteristics, but she puts on a very charismatic and friendly mask as leader of the Apex. And further still, her journey from charming cult leader to a genuinely caring and penitent person is fascinating to watch unfold over the course of the season.

The flashbacks from her tape explain a lot about the foundation of who Grace becomes. From her parents, we can see how she felt neglected and ignored. She wanted her parents, but they did not care to make time for her, shoving her off on tutors, caretakers, instructors, anybody that means that they don't have to deal with her. They held her to high standards, pushing her into contests and controlling what she wore and how she did her hair. But they also did things like use their status to keep her out of trouble for things like shoplifting. These things gave her both a sense of importance of status, but also left her with very low self esteem. This was furthered by her lack of friends, where upon feeling hurt and rejected by the other girls at the dance class, she lashed out at them to make herself feel better. However, given her serious tone when recounting the incident to Hazel, and evidently counts it among her worst memories, I think deep down, despite the satisfaction at causing the other girls to argue, she knew it wouldn’t help her make friends or make up for the lack of attention from her parents, things she really wanted.

This manifested in how Grace led the Apex, with the tribute scene being a prime example. She has the children give her gifts, a way to reinforce her position as leader. But she also acts grateful for the gifts, personally thanking each child by name even if the gifts are not very good. This makes the children feel like she cares about them, and they have a special relationship. Given her own past, it seems she is trying to be nice to the kids and keep them happy. It’s notable that she generally tries keeping her temper with them, as shown in Debutante Ball Car with Hazel and trying to talk to Lucy in The New Apex. Still, we can look at the darker interactions with Lucy, where she takes a mocking tone to chide her for referring to the stagelight denizen as a ‘person’. We can also look at the end of The Mall Car, where she coldly tries to get Jesse to fall in line by convincing him it’s in his best interest to be rid of Lake. I think the issue here is that while she does genuinely care, she never properly processed the way her parents affected her. Hence that her way of trying to keep people with her is to make herself seem important to them. I think it’s less about control and more having issues actually relating to people due half of her life being spent under neglect and even emotional abuse while also being spoiled, and the other half on the Train with little chance for socialization.

Grace is not someone who has an easy time being vulnerable. As I said, despite her bravado she has little genuine self esteem. She fears that if she shows her weakness or vulnerability to others, they might reject her. So instead, she puts on the facade of the confident leader, and approaches new people by trying to figure what they might want her to say in order to get them to listen to her. Writer Justin Micheal says “Grace: she keeps a lot inside, and a lot from other people because of her fear, and that was veryyyy hard to explicitly convey in the shifting narrative since she rarely talked about it out loud.” However, by spending time with Hazel, she begins to open up. Hazel is a sweet little girl who does not care about Grace’s pretenses, and the shift starts when Hazel reassures her over the story about the ice cream incident, which Grace is touched by. In the next episode she opens up to Simon about her worry over numbers. And following Tuba’s death, she allows herself to grieve for her and tries to comfort and protect Hazel. Unfortunately, she tries to do so by encouraging Hazel to hide her true self from Simon. This is both from a desire to keep them both with her, and also probably again from her response to issues being to hide them and put on an act in order to keep things calm. She is forced to acknowledge this in the finale, realizing how she handled her fear of being alone, and admitting to the Apex that she was wrong and that they need to find their own path.

Another thing I thought was interesting, was Grace’s use of physical contact. She often uses this in both genuine and manipulative ways. I noted that a common gesture she used was to put her hands on someone’s shoulder. She does this repeatedly to Jesse in The Mall Car, and to Hazel in the Jungle Car. It’s a bit of a patronizing gesture, in a way, making her seem more confident and in charge than the other person. I also think it’s interesting that Simon attempts to imitate this gesture with Jesse in The Mall Car, with Hazel at the end of The Color Clock Car, and even Grace herself in The Origami Car. She also touches Lucy and Hazel’s faces when giving or trying to give a spiel about her beliefs about the Train, another somewhat domineering gesture.

With Simon, she is more casual, often putting her arm around him and playing with his hair. While there is a lot to say about their dynamic, she feels most comfortable around him. She even hugs him following their heart to heart on the stairs in Le Chat Chalet Car. And as her relationship with Hazel becomes more genuine, so do the displays of affection. She holds her hand a few times throughout the Debutante Ball Car, and they have fun in the snowball fight and on the slide. Then after Tuba’s death, she stops being so comfortable around Simon, with the scene in The Hey Ho Whoa Car where she uses her previous gestures of affection as an attempt to keep him on her side, and otherwise not wanting him to touch her, However, she hugs Hazel at least four times in comfort throughout the The Campfire Car and The Canyon of the Golden Winged Snakes Car. There’s also her general protective body language as she holds Hazel in the scenes with Amelia in the cave and on the bridge. Lastly, since I mentioned the shoulder touch as a more manipulative gesture, I think it is very interesting that Lucy uses it in a sincere attempt to comfort Grace over Simon’s death. A nice touch to the theme about trying to improve things.

So all in all, Grace is a very fascinating character to me, and I love watching her character arc and seeing how nuanced she is.

Hi! Totally agree with you on the qb post. (and also, i watch rwby so yeah) maybe pb could just put the bg characters on dialogue boxes. It was really weird to see sprites (like the Justin and Mariana ones) from other book wherein they’re like 30+ there and in this book, they’re whatever they need to be to fit the narrative.

Yeah, I think your idea might work better. It would certainly be less effort on PB's part, but I think they feel as if they NEED to show a face, you know?

I've had this thought for awhile. PB is in desparate need to revamp their art style. Change up the stiff models and do something about the background characters because they're this quality issue. And each new book they release, it only adds to the problem. And then it also just ruins any REAL cameo.Remember in the early choices days when Madison appeared in RoE because she was on vacation or something. You wouldn't get that now. They'd renanme her jen or something and have Poppy insult her.

Something needs to change. Choice needs to reinvent themselves because they're getting comfortable and lazy.

I literally get into this funk every year around this time and for years I’ve been blaming RWBY (derogatory) hiatus because, hey, it’s natural to hit a funk when something you’re really invested in is no longer available! Last year I hit this funk in December, when it became apparent that cRWBY (derogatory) had gotten so bad at show vs tell that they were showing and telling two entirely different stories, and the bad one was the one that was taking over.

And then I kind of just... got stuck. While I have definitely been fannish over things, that RWBY hyperfixation (derogatory) was the last time I had a real, hardcore hyperfixation. All of my real intense hyperfixes since then have been RWBY related (Hallmarks, DTLS, the Santa au that I need to finish) as I pendulum wildly between moods about the source, and everything else I’ve tried to hyperfix on in the past year has fizzled almost immediately. Even my own work doesn’t excite me as much as it should, at least not for long.

It’s easy to blame this on RWBY- if cRWBY hadn’t shit the bed with their writing, I could have been excited about the new season and probably gotten to enjoy it with my buds this year like every year since volume three.

But it’s not just cause of that. Part of it is that I resolved, apparently more seriously than I realized, to only engage with new media if it has an mlm lead. (Media I was already into was exempt, and I did loosen this up somewhat for background watching that I was not intended to become invested in, because I do need to actually engage with stories on some level.)

I actually did encounter some media with mlm leads in the past year, but all of it was disappointing on some level- TAZ, which had been suggested to me for years on the premise of having a fat, gay wizard who dates the Grim Reaper, turned out to not only take forever to establish that fact at all, it barely had an impact on the story until the last act, Justin got to bury any exploration of Taako’s sexuality under Taako’s unwillingness to air his business, and every instance of the guy who made him describing Taako’s figure made it pretty clear that he envisioned Taako as thin. Don’t mistake this as me not liking Taako, or dissing Justin- there are other factors involved that I recognize, and don’t hold against him. But that doesn’t change that the resulting product was still what it was, and definitely not what I had been promised. And that’s just one example.

(For the record, this is a big reason I refuse to watch Kipo right now. There’s other reasons, but “you guys keep recommending me things that are a huge disappointment” is one of them. No offense.)

I also have a friend who keeps recommending my AP’s with mlm leads, which is great, but my brain shut down on engaging with AP’s after all of that nonsense with c*r, and the one that I did try to engage with, the mlm character I was promised was... again, not what I was promised. (The end of season one also had a pair the spares hetfest with the parents, which also put me off of season two, which I was assured was when the character did become what I was promised.)

I also found some gay romance novels, which was nice, but I also noticed as I began to look for them that they were all written by female authors, with a female gaze in mind, and that just got depressing.

Now, don’t get me wrong. I actually have no problem with m/m fiction being written by and for female audiences. The issue is that when you’re a gay man and your only option for stories about gay men are written by and for the consumption of women, instead of feeling good, you just kinda start to feel sad. When characters like you are always shunted to being side characters, it stings. It’s not fair. It hurts. And when they are main characters, it’s always for either mainstream hetero or female gaze consumption, and that’s not fun either.

(I have my theories about why this is the situation, but I’m not going into it here on Tumble. Also, if anyone tries to fucking derail this point with any other group that faces this issue you’re getting blocked. I am aware that mlm are not the only ones who experience this, but this is the group I belong to and am currently talking about.)

Of course, there’s also the fact that when I do find mlm content with mlm as the target audience, there’s also a measure of... hmm... how should I put this? The distinct feeling that the men in question would call me a slur in Taco Bell.

Now, this past year has been a nightmare hellscape for a lot of reasons, and a definite factor in my failure to hyperfixate properly also ties into world events, as well as the fact that I quit my job last year and my current job situation is bleak (only working one or two days a week for the foreseeable future). Aaaaaand there’s some homelife stuff going on that, again, I’m not getting into on the Tumbles. Just suffice it to say that there’s a lot that I’m not talking about, and the reason I’m talking about the parts I am talking about so much is that I don’t actually like sharing personal life stuff on a website where the community as a whole has made it repeatedly clear that they don’t consider posters to actually have any ownership over their posts, and where a post or comment can still haunt you years later because no one knows how to just let things die.

So, yeah. The funk that I’m currently in is pretty typical and literally hits every year around this time, but it’s hitting harder this year because it’s building onto a funk that I never quite left behind the last time.

Anyway. Sorry I’ve been so checked out lately. I hope y’all still like me even while I’m boring.
