~Back In The Game~

~Chapter Four~

-Series Masterlist-

What happens when a girl who loves volleyball joins a boys' volleyball club? Does she find love? Will she relive her past or move forward? Join (L/N) (Y/N) on a journey with fun twists and turns.

I don't own Haikyuu or any of the characters.

-Last Time-

“Daichi!”

“Yea?” He says turning around to look at you.

“It was nice seeing you again! I’m glad you’re taking my advice!” You say before winking and going inside leaving a flustered and confused Daichi. ‘Wha?’ Daichi thought to himself while blushing before heading home.

“I’m home!” You announced.

“Welcome home Sweetie! How was your first day of school?” Your mom asks while sitting on the couch. You walk into the living room and sit down.

“It was alright. The best part was after school.” You say slightly smiling. Noticing your smile, your mom becomes intrigued.

“Oh? What happened?”

“I went to the gym to join the volleyball club.” You explain nonchalantly.

“You did?!” Your mom asks, surprised.

“Yeah…” You whisper looking down and smiling. Your mother looks at you concerned before noticing how happy you look. A small smile crosses her face. ‘She hasn’t looked this happy ever since the incident,’ she thought.

“They are an interesting bunch.” You say while giggling. Seeing how happy you are, makes your mom happy, but there is still a concern in the back of her mind. She doesn’t want the incident to repeat.

“I’m going to go to my room and start on my schoolwork.” You say as you get up and start walking to your room.

“Okay, Sweetie. I’ll let you know when dinner is ready.”

“Thanks.” You say as you go into your room. As you sit on your bed your mind wanders to the volleyball club members. ‘Daichi, Suga, Tanaka, Hinata, and Kageyma…’ A small smile creeps onto your face as you think, ‘This is going to be great.’

You finish your schoolwork, eat dinner, and go to bed early since you have to wake up at 4 a.m. to make it to the gym by 5 a.m.

-Timeskip to the morning-

“Damn It! I’m late!” You say while running to the gym. As you approach the gym you can hear that practice has started without you. Pushing the door open, you make your way into the gym as the three boys turn their attention toward you.

“I’m so sorry I’m late!” You apologize as you put on your gym shoes.

“It’s okay! You’re here now!” Hinata exclaims happily. You send him a grateful smile.

“OUR ANGEL IS HERE. I’M GLAD YOU MADE IT HERE SAFELY!” Tanaka screams dramatically.

“Alright, so what are we working on?”

“Hinata is trying to receive my spikes.” Kageyama says in a monotone voice.

“Alrighty! I’ll get warmed up and join you guys.” You say before going off to the side so you won’t be in the way. As you continue to warm up, Kageyama begins yelling at Hinata, which leads to an argument. Just before you begin to intervene, Tanaka tells the boys about Daichi.

“Daichi is usually a nice guy, but he gets scary when he's mad. If he finds out about these early morning practices it won’t end well for any of us. I’ll be in trouble. Right now the four of us are the only ones who know about this and we need to keep it that way.” Just as he finishes talking the door to the gym opens and a new voice is heard, which causes you all to jump.

“I knew you guys had super-early practice.” We all turn to see where the voice is coming from.

“S-Suga!?” Tanaka exclaims surprised. “H-How…!?”

“It wasn’t hard to guess. You never ask to hold to key especially since you barely make it to practices on time anyway.” Tanaka starts to stutter as he thinks he’s in trouble.

“Don’t worry I won’t tattle. It’s kinda exciting, it’s like we’re doing secret training.” Suga says while smiling like a little kid. You give him an appreciative smile.

“Alright guys let’s get to it!” You gain the attention of the boys as you stand on the court and hold a ball at your hip. You all begin to split into two groups; group one has Hinata and Suga, and group two has you, Kageyama, and Tanaka.

You start off tossing balls to Kageyama so he can set to Tanaka, while Suga is helping Hinata with his receives. You toss the ball to Kageyama as Tanaka gets ready to run to the net to jump and spike. As the ball is in front of him, Tanaka hits the ball with force down onto the floor on the other side of the net. Distracted by Tanaka’s spike, Hinata fails to see the ball heading toward him. *Bop* The ball hits his head.

“Hinata! Eyes front!” Suga lightly scolds. You sweatdrop while thinking ‘How does he not have brain damage?’

“I want to spike! Gimme one!” Hinata suddenly says to Kageyama. “You like being a setter right?! Then why don’t you set for me?! Just one please?!”

“... Don’t wanna…” Everyone’s face except yours looks shocked. ‘Did they expect anything else…?’ you thought.

“Why not?! Stop being a scrooge!”

“You can’t even receive properly and you expect me to send you a set? You don’t have the right. On Saturday’s 3-on-3 I’m going to set the ball to (Y/N) as much as possible. Let her handle it. You just try and stay out of the way.” Kageyama says calmly.

“H-Hey that’s not-” You begin.

“If I get better at my receives, then will you set to me?” Hinata asks.

“I’ll set to anyone who I think will score. There may be times during the game when I have no choice but to send it to you, but I don’t think you are necessary to win. We’re almost out of time, let’s clean up.” You look at Hinata as he has a frustrated look on his face. You walk up to him and gently put a hand on his shoulder, shaking him from his thoughts.

“Hey, it’s going to be okay. I’ll try talking to him.” You say softly. “If that doesn’t work, I’ll just make it so he HAS to set to you.” You say as you wink and start walking away to clean. Hinata watches you walk away with red cheeks and a small smile.

-In Class-

You’re sitting at your desk trying to pay attention to the lesson, but it’s not working very well. You can’t keep your eyes open for long and your head slowly starts to fall before it jolts up to keep you awake. You glance around to make sure the teacher didn’t notice. However, a pair of friends did notice your cute actions. Although one would deny it even on his deathbed.

Every day before and after school the three of you would practice together. You would mostly be helping Hinata with his receives. He was gradually getting better. Here it is, Thursday morning, you’re standing next to Suga as you both are watching Hinata receive Kageyama’s spikes.

“Don’t go easy on me!” Hinata exclaims slightly angry.

“You asked for it!!” Kageyama says before hitting the ball with more speed and force than before. Hinata dives to the side and hits the ball with one arm before quickly going back to receiving. Tanaka walks in the door as the first-year boys continuously hit the ball back and forth.

“How long has this been going on?” He asks, looking at the scene.

“About fifteen minutes.” You explain not taking your eyes off your teammates.

“Straight?”

“Yup.” Suga replies.

“You’ve got to be reaching your limit by now! It’s time to st-” Kageyama exclaims to Hinata.

“The ball… hasn’t… touched the ground yet!!” He says while struggling to breathe.

“Oh boy… here we go.” You say with a small smile while rolling your eyes playfully. Before the two upperclassmen that are beside you can respond, Kageyama hits the ball so hard, out of anger, it goes flying. You slightly snicker to yourself when you see the look of surprise on his face.

“Geez, Kageyama! You jerk! Who could get that?!” Tanaka teasingly scolds. Watching as Hinata runs after the ball, Suga begins to talk.

“Even in middle school, Hinata’s athleticism was impressive… but I think he has something else just as impressive…”

“His drive to win.” Both you and Suga say at the same time. Just as you both finish your thought you see Hinata dive to save the ball. He reaches his arm out and gets it between the ball and the floor. As he faceplants the ball flies into the air.

“Woah! It’s up!” Tanaka says with amazement.

“Nice one Hinata!” You scream encouragingly.

The ball heads toward Kageyama slowly. Getting into a setting position, Kageyama waits for the ball to get to him. Once Hinata sees that he will get a set he immediately perks up. He has stars in his eyes as he gets up from the floor and starts running to the net. Kageyama sends the ball to Hinata who spikes it with a loud ‘BAM!’

“W-Woah…” you say in astonishment. “T-That was amazing guys!!” You say running up to your teammates excitedly. “That was so cool! Hinata you jumped so high! You almost looked like you were flying!” You praise.

“T-Thank y-you (Y/N).” You turn to Kageyama without noticing the bright red blush on the ginger’s face.

“And your set was great! It was stunning! I can’t wait to play with both of you guys!” Kageyama stands in front of you stunned before turning away to hide his blush.

“Thanks…” He says barely above a whisper. While you are fangirling over the first-year duo, the underclassmen are staring at you three. Especially you, ‘She looks so happy…’ they think to themselves with smiles. ‘I wish it was me making her smile.’

All of a sudden Hinata falls to his knees looking like he’s going to puke. Before you can ask him if he’s okay, Kageyama begins to speak.

“Yo…” He begins as we look at him waiting for him to continue. “This Saturday…we’re going to win.” You smile widely at the intense determination in his voice.

“O-Of course we…will…” Hinata responds before throwing up. As he starts you cover your ears and turn away. Suga and Tanaka start freaking out as the latter starts telling Tanaka to clean it up, and get water, and a bucket while he goes to comfort his underclassman.

After it’s cleaned up you feel a tap on your shoulder. Slowly opening your eyes and moving your hands away from your ears, you look at the person.

ohh definitely this Obi line when he was talking to Torou about Zen and Co.:

If we're talking scenes my favs are whenever the OT3 or OT5 are just vibing together and living their wholesome and silly slice of life all together (OT3 Lyrias date, OT5 sleepover before coronation ect ect...)

15. Your controversial take

Lyrias👏arc👏wasn't👏that👏good👏 it was quite boring in fact IM ENDING MY SILENCE

It will never be as good as the other arcs no matter how cool the winter aesthetic is and no matter how cute and fun the new characters are. The plot itself was ehhh and the pandemic and OT3 date was probably the most interesting thing that had happened there. It will never be Tanbarun or Bergatt arc and that's on that 💅

AND ANOTHER THING! omg I just remembered. Shirayuki leaving her patient in the Perfume arc just like that (girlie was traumatized and recovering still) and going with Obi and Eisetsu to rescue Ryuu and Kageya was quite pointless imo (and bit ooc for Shirayuki? Is it just me??) Like I understand it was about Ryuu so ofc she came but I don't think she played that crucial part in the rescuing (she noticed the secret msg from Ryuu and knew about the herbs effects so she was a good addition but I just can't get over 'leaving your sick and very traumatized patient moments after the accident' move) 🤷🏻‍♀️

16. Something that you had wished had happened

I wish we got to explore more of the characters pasts and backstories. AND BRING TOROU AND MIHAYA BACK! Torou could have been a great fuel for Obi and his character development....a missed opportunity man 😭 I think sensei makes the mistake of making interesting and appealing side characters just to forget about them later a lot (?), even when they are relevant to the plot or not. It's a shame, really. But I can't blame her I suppose.

Like you also mentioned before: wishing the separation arcs weren't as long. AMEN! OT5 should get more time to spend all together. That much of a separation was just ...??? uknow

23. Favorite fancontent that you've created

You guys should appreciate me for this masterpiece and I'm super proud of this one and this one from the early stages of my art :)

and this zenyuki cause I even suprised myself with that.

32. The best part of the fandom

yall my darlings <33 everyone in the discord server made my fandom experience so much more enjoyable so thanks yall for that <3

also ppl who are big fans of side characters are the real ones i know we've got quite lot of these. I also feel like we have so many talented writers, artists, editors and creators! and ppl who post ans news, manga panels and analysis are so amazing too!

Ohhh plus I think our fandom has a great attention to detail (just like sensei!) and just seeing ppl pinpoint stuff I otherwise wouldn't notice myself is pretty cool.

11. Favorite “villain” or morally grey character I'm going to pick Raji, because he was THE original villain (and the plot driver) despite being fully redeemed in future arcs. It seems like his morals are a lot less grey now too! I love how despite being the crown prince and kinda spoiled at first, he was still prone to anxiety (which leads to things like stress induced tummy ached). That was a clue, I think. Someone who is so worried about what others think of him could never truly be bad. I love his new found self-awareness too. Like, self-awareness is a great limiter for egotism.

14. Most hated arc The perfume arc / Rugilia arc. There's no contest. It feels like it's way longer than it needs to be and the focus shifted too much from Shirayuki and co to newly introduced characters like Eisetsu and Kageya.

24. A random headcanon that you have Kiki wakes up early to train, but she's actually a terrible morning person. Her natural rhythms make her more of a night owl. Most people don't know this about her because she's so disciplined and because she doesn't need as much sleep as the average person. Like she could get five hours of sleep and still function perfectly well.

25. Why you picked it up I randomly saw a video about Obi and his devotion to Shirayuki on Youtube - it appeared on my feed. He seemed like a cool guy, so I checked out the anime. I came in for Obi but fell for Kiki instead, oops.

Kagehina Fanfic: Ch.6

Hinata

"Yoooouu lady-killer!" Tanaka pounces on me from behind and starts viciously grinding his knuckles into the top of my head.

"Aagghh! Tanaka, what the hell! Get off!"

Chortling gleefully, Tanaka releases me and steps back. He's grinning from ear to ear. "You've got a date," he declares triumphantly.

"Excuse-me?"

I'd been eating lunch in the cafeteria with Noya, Asahi, and Kageyama. At these words from Tanaka, Noya springs to attention. "Say what?" He pipes eagerly. "Who has our little carrot-top snared?"

"Weelllll..." Tanaka draws out the word for dramatic effect. He leans in closer to me and begins mock-whispering, clearly making a point of being loud enough for the others to hear. "Behind me to the right. See the table by the recycling bin?"

I follow the indicative jerk of Tanaka's head with my eyes. "Yeah..."

"See the tiny little blond sitting next to the girl who looks like she got her face smashed in with one of Asahi's spikes?"

"Huh?"

"Hey!" Asahi doesn't seem too pleased to be referenced in this way.

"The smashed-in-face one is my little sister," Tanaka continues.

"Okay..."

"And the tiny blond is her best friend, Sawako, whoooo..." he takes a long breath, as if expecting us to drumroll. "... happens to have a big crush on you!"

"Owwwww, Hinata my man!" Noya bounces to his feet and punches me in the shoulder.

"Jeez!" I rub my shoulder, not sure whether to be angry or just bewildered. "Calm down. I don't even know that girl, how would she have a crush on me?

"She watched you play!" Tanaka explains eagerly. "Tagged along with my sister to the championship game, and I guess she found your quick attacks so flaming hot..."

"Daaamn." Noya's way too invested in this. "Scoring points on the court and with the ladies! Two birds with one stone."

Asahi also chuckles. "Congrats, Hinata. She looks like a nice girl."

Everyone looks like a nice person to Asahi.

I frown and rub my temples. "Well, if it's the quick attacks she likes, then she should really be going after Kageyam..." I trail off as I catch sight of Kageyama's face. It's pale as hell and he looks like he might be about to hurl. "Hey. Are you okay? You look sick."

"Hellooooo!" Tanaka waves his hand up and down in front of my face, energetically. "I'm about to get you a date, you doorknob! Will you focus?"

"Just shut up for a minute." I push Tanaka's hand away so I can continue assessing Kageyama. He really doesn't look good... "Kageyama?"

"I'm fine," Kageyama says brusquely. "Go on. Plan your date."

I'm hardly convinced, but Kageyama shifts on his seat, angling his body away from me in his clear "I don't want to talk to you" fashion. I sigh. Finally, I turn back to Tanaka, who's positively incredulous at my lack of attention.

"Okay, sorry... I'm listening."

"Finally! Okay so here's the scoop. Sawako asked my sister to ask me to ask you if you'll meet her at the gelato shop down the road after school today."

"Why didn't she ask me herself?"

"Because she's a teenage girl! They like doing these things through some wacky, giggly game of telephone. Apparently they've been hatching this plan for a couple weeks, the little dorfuses."

I'm surprised Tanaka was willing to play messenger to his kid sister's friend. But I guess his enthusiasm for the opposite sex extends to an eagerness to land dates for his team-mates.

I purse my lips and consider this new information. "I practise after school," I say finally.

"For crying out loud, Hinata!" Tanaka bursts. "It's a Friday afternoon in the off-season! You do not need to blow off a girl to practise!"

"He's right, Hinata." It's Kageyama who spoke. Surprised, I turn to face him again. He still looks rather pekid, but he's angled back towards me and is holding my gaze steadily. "We practise every day. You can afford to go on a date."

"But..."

"I'm not feeling too well today anyway." His voice sounds rather flat.

"So you are sick."

Kageyama shrugs. "Nah. Just... got a headache, that's all."

I nod. "Okay."

I could practise without Kageyama, but it wouldn't be nearly as productive. Maybe I should go see this girl after all... I mean, why not?

I glance over at her again. She is kind of cute... And short enough that she wouldn't be taller than me in high heels.

"Okay," I say at last. "I'll do it."

Tanaka whoops loudly and Noya claps me on the back. Asahi smiles. Kageyama looks down at his plate of food.

The group falls back into other chatter until the bell signals the end of lunch. As I gather up my things to go, I feel a hand come down softly on my shoulder. I look back – Kageyama again.

"Hinata," he murmurs. "If you're really worried about missing a practice... I can meet you this weekend to make up for it, if you like."

I feel a smile pull gently at my face. "Yeah. Yeah, I'd like that." Read more on on AO3 and wattpad :)
