Sumptuous Knole
Tumblr media
I've waited a long time to get here, and the decoration really is completely overwhelming. A long-gallery lined with faded, ancient armchairs:

I love these exaggerated height four-poster beds from the late 17th century. This one belonged to King James II.

The original 'Knole' sofa, which was not designed for ordinary use, but for state occasions:

This room was used by a lady-in-waiting of Queen Anne. I love the leaf decoration on the tapestries.

Just imagine being a child like Virginia Woolf's Orlando/Vita Sackville West, playing amongst all these treasures!

Portrait of music critic and author Edward 'Eddy' Sackville-West (1901-1965). Eddy was the 5th Baron Sackville and, indeed, cousin of author and gardener Vita Sackville-West. Eddy inherited Vita's beloved family home Knole, much to Vita's despair - all her life, she identified strongly with Knole, a bond her great friend and lover Virginia Woolf immortalized in her brilliant 1928 novel Orlando. But let's return to Eddy! He was an important music critic and supported several contemporary British composers. He especially helped and encouraged Benjamin Britten throughout his career, feeling passionate about his music and, probably, also about Britten himself, even writing him in 1942 'how unspeakably I love you!' Britten, later on, dedicated his Serenade for horn and tenor to Eddy. #edwardsackvillewest #eddysackvillewest #vitasackvillewest #virginiawoolf #orlando #literature #queerauthor #musiccritic #benjaminbritten #knole #knolehouse #britishcomposers #classicalmusic #portrait https://www.instagram.com/p/Cft0MS3NXHz/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

[Orlando][Virginia Woolf]

Knole
One of the largest houses in England, Knole is a 600 year old estate, owned by the Sackville-West family for over 400 years. It sits within the 1,000 acre Knole Park, home to two different species of deer, though as a Site of Special Scientific Interest they don’t have access to the whole park. Originally built as an archbishop’s palace it is architecturally interesting, and impressive with a…

For some 500 years, wild deer have roamed the land of the Knole House, a former archbishop's palace in the United Kingdom. This study showed that deer had an especially strong correlation between the evolution of male antlers and female brains.
