Actually on that note, i can't rmbr the chapter rn- I'll go looking for it- but when WWX was chatting up the locals b4 entering yi city, Wangji is just off to the side, frowning, and rolling a rock under his shoe.
It's a v small detail but it's good to see how he deals with frustration in a non-destructive way.
......As opposed to JC , who snapped at his nephew after he was in a hostage situation, instead of comforting him like the other guardians.
These are clearly different situations, but even in less dire instances JC is a dick to this kid, and others as well.
Like he's been through a lot, he really has, but so has almost everyone he interacts with like.
There are no perfect characters in this novel, they're all multifaceted n dynamic. So it's easy to see how even WWX, LXC, NMJ, etc can be assholes at times, despite being characters that we root for. But there's definitely times to tone it down.

To love you is to know myself
by natcat5
M, 63k, Series, Wangxian
Summary: “I will love you as misfortune loves orphans, as fire loves innocence, and as justice loves to sit and watch everything go wrong.” - Lemony Snicket Kay's comments: So. Back when this story first came out, I actually only started reading it because the summary was a Lemony Snicket quote, which I took as a very good sign and I wasn't disappointed, but also, the tags summed it up well: Wangxian get together sooner (before Wei Wuxian's death), but it fixes nothing. I really love that, because I think Wangxian getting together earlier would solve absolutely nothing and I loved the explorations of it and also, autistic Lan Wangji, my beloved, and also, Lan Wangji suffering chronic pain after the whipping and Mo Xuanyu's body being different to Wei Wuxian's original body and that being something he has to adjust too and I just love that. Part one is the main story, part two is a supplementary story from Wei Wuxian's POV. Excerpt: “Any fight you do now is to survive,” Wangji snarls. “To live to protect those you swore to! The boy you claimed as your own! The home you made!” “They’ll never let us! Lan Zhan, Lan Zhan,” Wei Ying babbles, sobs. “We must think of a way,” Wangji insists. “For everyone to leave. For everyone to live. Wei Ying, please.” “Lan Zhan!” There is snot smeared across Wei Ying’s face and his eyes are manic, red-rimmed and blurred with tears. “You, poor you, you peerless, you beautiful– you must regret, regret me, regret meeting me, every single day, every–,” “Never.” Tears drip down Wangji’s nose, off his chin. “Knowing Wei Ying, loving Wei Ying, was the best part of this life.” Wei Ying stares. He rips himself away from Wangji’s hands. “You can’t be here!” he wails. “Leave! Get lost!”
pov lan wangji, pov wei wuxian, austistic lan wangji, canon divergence, getting together, character study, introspection, miscommunication, hurt/comfort, thirteen years of wei wuxian's death, canonical character death - wei wuxian, angst with a happy ending, demonic cultivation, chronic illness, chronic pain, disability, recovery, permanent injury

Hello....I'm not the anon who asked YOI & SVSSS, but can I ask the same questions (fave characters/why you love them and fave moments) but this time about MDZS? Thanks if you want to answer.....
Absolutely happy to answer!
Top 5 MDZS characters!
5. A-Yuan/Lan Sizhui: baby A-Yuan was so so cute and fun but I also really enjoy how he's just this good guy. He's calm and patient and kind but he's also not like outstanding or a genius. He's just a dutiful nice young man with two dads and a dead uncle. Anyway he just makes me happy
4. Lan Wangji: controversial I know to put him so low. I do love him just not as much as some of the other characters. I love how autistic he's coded since I am autistic. I love how he basically wrote Wei Wuxian a note that said "get out of my school" because he couldn't handle his crush but was devastated when Wei Wuxian got out of his school.
I love his desperate attempts to help Wei Wuxian. I especially love how he had grown in the years of their separation. While Wei Wuxian always saw him as confident before Wei Wuxian's death I see a Lan Wangji who was unsure and uncomfortable and not clear on how to help or what to do.
Whereas Lan Wangji post Wei Wuxian's resurrection is completely confident in himself and his decisions. He's able to tease and flutter Wei Wuxian the way he had flustered Lan Wangji before. It's a realistic maturity he's been granted
3. Wei Wuxian: I love his energy and how morally grey he is. He has strong convictions and does what he thinks is right but (at least in his first life) he also believes that his ends justify his means.
He is impulsive, charming, oblivious to his own sexuality to an incredibly familiar degree, and can dish out teasing but can't take it
He loves with his whole being but he also hates with his whole being. He's a creature of absolutes which I love
He also really needed to explain things better to people in his life holy fuck
I also like how death matured him. He has regrets and wishes he did some things differently and is just calmer post resurrection which is good
I also like how he is very much an unreliable narrator because his perception and reality are not at all the same
2. Lan Jingyi: the most un-Lanlike Lan to ever Lan. He picks fights with everyone, he's loud, he'd abrasive, he picks on Jin Ling, he picks fights with sect leaders!
I love him
1. Jiang Cheng: he is a complete asshole but I love him. I just feel for him with his story. His mom was abusive, his dad was neglectful of him, he felt unwanted and a failure and everything impressive or good that he did was overshadowed by Wei Wuxian who he still loved! And tried to help and protect in his own way for a long time only for it to feel like it had all been thrown back in his face in favour of strangers
Like if you really think about the story from his perspective it's hard not to feel for Jiang Cheng. He's angry and hurt and an asshole but also he loves his close ones, especially Jin Ling, so much. And Jin Ling feels so safe with him. He never worries that Jiang Cheng will harm him but he's worried about disappointing him. But the way Jin Ling is loyal to Jiang Cheng speaks volumes
Jiang Cheng is selfish. In thst he wants to protect what's his and only that but that's also what makes him interesting
There is a lot I identity with when it comes to Jiang Cheng and feel like at the end of the novel there is a door open for him and Wei Wuxian to heal even though it will never be what it was
Top 5 moments
5. When Young Wei Wuxian first meets Lan Wangji and in particular the aftermath where he says out of no where about Lan Wangji not liking him "he's not that pretty" only to internally realise he is that pretty and ignore the pouty feeling Lan Wangji ignoring him gives him
Like that is so incredibly gay and the fact he doesn't realise it is just...I was like that at 15 I get it
4. When Lan Wangji in the cave is done with Wei Wuxian's shit and bites him. How can you not love that scene?
3. Jiang Cheng being physically restrained trying to protect Wei Wuxian from his mother in front of the Wens. As badly as it goes I really think that's an insight into his real character and a moment that highlights why they were willing to go to such lengths for each other (cause remember Jiang Cheng only lost his core because he got caught so Wei Wuxian could escape)
2. The Kiss on Phoenix Mountain: I mean it's iconic isn't it? Also definitely opened a door for Wei Wuxian I'm just saying. Someone acquired a kink that day ...
1. The confession scene. Again it's just iconic with Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji ruining Jin Guangyao's villain moment by being gay and in love is just *chefs kiss* actually the whole temple scene where Wei Wuxian's various relationship drama is aired out while Jin Guangyao is like "hello? This was my big emotional moment?" Is just brilliant

Which Boys?
@imhereformysciencefriends: Are these your boys?
Me: *thinking* Which boys? there are several boys!
*shows me animation of Xie Lian and Hua Cheng being devastatingly cute.*
Me: Yes, those are my boys.
Friend: They are very cute
Me: Yes, yes they are.
Friend: *may not know about the three different books and three different pairings that are coded light colors x red and black
Me: Okay, three novels! Three main ships! All with the same color coding!
Heaven Official's Blessing: A sweet martial god and the ghost king that luv him.
Xie Lian (White colors, armed with a long white bandage with its own angsty backstory, very STRONK, bound by two seals. Very Tired, would like everyone to Get Along because Very Tired. Trash collecting god, former martial god.)
Hua Cheng: (Red and Black Boyfriend! Decided he would be smartest and bestest boy who knows everything v. early on so he would be Worthy of His Prince. Also decided from some reason to be an awesome criminal kingpin. As you do. Only one eye! Ghost King with the awesome title Crimson Rain Sought Flower.)
Romance roughly goes "Spy vs. Spy is this guy Hua Cheng/alive or not?" through first volume. This is hilarious.
Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation: adhd necromancer and autistic paladin team up and fight crime...after the death of necromancer
Lan Wangji: (White colors, armed with a sword and carries his own angsty back story. Lawful Good. Has been grieving the death of adhd necromancer for a variable length to time depending on canon material (book vs live action). I would say he's pure of heart but uh...no.)
Wei Wuxian: (Red and Black Boyfriend! Has been through hell and back. Left with a sword and came back with a magic flute used for necromancing dancing. Completely shocked that he was summoned as an evil spirit to get vengeance, because he was the quietest and most peaceful of dead people. The most peaceful! Fastest flute carver in the cultivation world apparently. So smart he goes right back around to stupid. Does not realize Lan Wangji like-likes him.)
Scum Villain Self Saving System: Hate Reader must be the villain of the novel he hated. The villain that becomes a human stick. Hate Reader would like to avoid this. Meanwhile, the writer has to wade through his own crappy novel as yet another minor villain.
Shen Qingqiu: (White/Light colors! armed with a sword, a System and a desperate desire to not be tortured by the protagonist. Is too terrified (and trying to watch Protags meet cutes) to realize Protagonist has a crush on his dumb closeted ass.
Luo Binghe: (Red and Black Boyfriend! Does not understand how relationship is formed. Is angry and hurt because his beloved Shizun apparently betrayed him and he wants to find out why. Armed with evil sword, vast power and a protagonist halo that ensures he can never be defeated because the writer was writing power fantasy smut fic.
Bonus:
Shang Qinghua: (Light colors, or colors the exact same as his boy! The writer, forced to be another villain, who is meant to die at the hands of the character he basically wrote as romantic fulfillment. This fate was successfully avoided.)
Mobei-Jun: (White and black Boyfriend! This king is an ice demon and does not emote very well. Seems angry most of the time, or at least to writers with anxiety, with Shang Qinghua definitely has I think. Armed with Ice Powers and exasperation for servants who are referred to as hamsters in fanon.)

Hey, folks, have a take which I have considered not at all:
What if partially deaf lan wangji, who relies heavily on lip-reading to get by in life, and who simply chooses to unfocus his eyes and Refuse To Perceive whenever jiang cheng is talking.
I’m positive this won’t hold up in terms of strict book or show canon, because there are probably times when he heard a not-particularly-distinct thing and reacted (yi city applies, I’m almost sure), but I like this.
(music is a stumbling block, but it’s still possible for deaf people to be musicians, and if it’s an Expected Skill in the family, well, we already know that lan wangji likes having rules to give him structure. consider all those duets, but what’s happening is that they’re both very good at musical theory, and wei wuxian is very good at reading musical cues and lan wangj is very good at reading wei wuxian)
Also, consider, if you have an autistic and semi-deaf child, with extremely flat affect, how much of that flat affect is because of the autism, and how much of it is because the kid didn’t hear whatever the hell you just said.
Like, this introduces some logistical difficulties into the plot, but I feel like it’s possible to bridge those with lan wangji’s observational skills, his intense focus on wei wuxian, and maybe a pinch of vaguely-defined qi-based awareness of his surroundings, perhaps for something like the yi city fight in the fog. The silencing spell makes a little less practical sense for him to use, but becomes much funnier to me, personally.
I’ll be honest, I haven’t thought this through in too much depth because right now I’m mostly delighted by imagining the scene on dafan mountain, where jiang cheng is trying to pick a fight and Lan Wangji is not reacting at all and letting the kids speak for him. It’s already extremely funny and I love it a lot, but I find it extra hilarious if lan wangji is actively refusing to parse anything jiang cheng says..
Also, please consider:
From that moment on, he could never turn his eyes away again.
Because if he did turn his eyes away, he would miss whatever his darling husband was trying to say to him

Actually on one hand I wanna see the xian me trio and hua cheng all have to deal with the resentment and want to see them grow as characters as they clear up misunderstandings and improve their relationships but also like. I don’t give a shit about what happened in the past why can’t the 4 just be shitty 800 year olds. Fengqing beating the crap out of each other while hua cheng enables it and xie lian is like STOP!...b not really this is kinda funny. Fenglian doing the most chad things possible while mu qing and hua cheng go through cardiac arrest trying to stop them from losing organs. So much potential, but like you have said, mxtx just looooves monopolizing the mc for only the love interest:/ same for mdzs too actually, I think wwx and jc should become annoying bros again and lwj let’s them fight :)
sooo real like I said I don’t see hua cheng being close friends with fengqing by virtue of how he interacts with people in general but it’s such a waste that both sides don’t get to sort out their differences when at the end you can see fengqing get that hua cheng is important to xie lian to the point that his disappearance even leaves them distraught💔 I don’t need them to be tight buddies I just want hua cheng to understand feng xin’s side specifically because I love feng xin and while hua cheng might not empathize he has a lot of respect for people who try their best to do good and feng xin falls into that. just ONE conversation would clear up the animosity between them I swear to god. plus of course the comic potential of them making mu qing’s life hell and also imagine mu qing recalling the whole “who’s better suited for a saber” debacle and asking hua cheng for a genuine sparring practice and nearly imploding while at it
I have my Thoughts about wwx and jc reconciliating that as of now are too convoluted to be expressed properly but to me the biggest waste in the mdzs novel was making lan wangji antagonistic of wen ning... like at least in tgcf hua cheng’s main trait is being a cunt and that’s fine but lan wangji? voice of reason hanguang-jun?? he and wen ning have so much in common not only in their shared affection for wei wuxian but also in how their quiet mannerisms belie their passions to onlookers, how they value family etc etc. literally zero reason for them not to be autistic friends

rules: tag people you would like to know/catch up with❤️
thank you so much @faeinthefog for tagging me, you have such incredible taste???? (as always) also, brb adding piranesi to my already-too-long tbr list
...speaking of lists that are far too long!! *cracks knuckles* let's get down to business!!!!
last song: excluding my many varied writing playlists, then probably eclipse by moonbyul or love poem by iu, including my writing playlists then this was my last listen
last movie: the prom. didn't personally vibe with it but i know it meant a lot to some (personally, i feel like a lot of what it was trying to do has already been done better by other films—like ek ladki ko dekha toh aisa laga). it had very pretty colours in it?? and i definitely wouldn't pass up the chance to play emma in an actual musical, but i feel like the story itself is too much of "aaaaand THIS is how the Gay Struggle™‬ applies to the average straight person!!!" which I don't even mind in a story that's done WELL (again, see ek ladki ko dekha toh aisa laga, or even one of my favourite books; the seven husbands of evelyn hugo) but i don't personally feel like it was done well enough here to pass it off
currently watching: oh no. a LOT. uhhhh okay let's try counting
1) godless—a miniseries on netflix which is v. good and very beautiful; essentially a story about fatherhood, masculinity and the loss/lack of it in a historical "wild west" type setting (it's a lot more diverse than it sounds. i promise.)
2) the fresh prince of bel-air—i shouldn't have to describe this one to many people lol, but it's basically a comedy about a quick-witted, very street-smart boy who goes to live with his very wealthy and privileged family in bel-air. it's very funny, and very heartwarming but i'm only a couple episodes in so far.
3) my mister—i'm only a few episodes into this drama myself but. damn. it's a show about two very broken, wearied people whose lives are falling apart in different ways (a very principled slightly older man, and a very... alternatively principled younger woman), who find each other and help each other heal. i've seen their relationship described as "everything but romantic", though the subject of romance and the nature of their relationship is questioned in the show and sometimes by the two characters
4) taskmaster—this one's just FUN, and also quite honestly pure chaos. i'm trading favourite shows with a friend, and damn if i'm not having a blast with this one. it's basically about a group of comedians who get given a set of tasks/challenges to do, to see who does them best—it has the exact same vibe of the joke "how many comedians does it take to change a lightbulb?". if nobody watches anything else of the show, i implore them to at LEAST watch this tree wizard clip. it's a masterpiece.
5) rick and morty—probably not my favourite type of show (monster of the week's not my usual style), but still good if you're it's intended audience. trading this with another friend, and i'm very much enjoying the experience of trash-talking all of the adult characters every episode with them.
6) mr. iglesias—this one's a very new addition. am also watching it with a friend. comedy about found family in a classroom full of underprivileged kids and the one teacher who really cares about them. i like it! i love marisol a lot as a character and mr. iglesias is very wholesome
re-watching:
7) the untamed—i'm going to be watching this show in some capacity for the rest of my life. i'm on my seventh watch by now and it never diminishes in quality. it's a truly epic introspective character exploration, about a quick-minded, entirely chaotic and very free-spirited man who dies and comes back in quite literally the opening moments of the show. you get to see his descent from being the world's envy to being the world's villain. it's a wonderful fantasy series about perception, the nature of morality, of family (born, raised and chosen) and about building a better world. did i mention that the main character is—as far as chinese censorship laws would allow—very bisexual and the story very heavily features a love story between him and another man? this was the edit that got me into it (it has spoilers but without context it won't make any sense anyway)
8) healer—what a drama. this is all about the power of information—how being informed and making information available can heal a nation that was built to be corrupt. starring a character who is basically a man who is a much poorer batman (kind of like a batman for hire?) with superman's love life (the show's got one of the best and most valid love triangles i've ever seen—and that's coming from somebody who typically HATES love triangles with a burning passion) and a woman who is feisty and strong-willed but not in an overbearing way? as well as amazing action, from somebody who normally can't stand action. i love the chemistry between the two romantic leads and just. i love the three leading characters, and a great deal of the periphery ones a lot. this show is absolutely incredible, would highly recommend
9) it's okay to not be okay/psycho but it's okay—a show that says neurodivergency and found family rights!!!! it's a very healing and introspective drama, but equally very intense/gripping/interesting? the chemistry between the two leads is astounding, and i just really love the amount of empathy this show has? it's truly stunning to watch and experience. starring an absolute badass of a woman, who acts almost entirely on impulse and communicates with the world through storytelling and fairytales, alongside a very kind and nurturing man who doesn't know how to communicate when he's miserable and an autistic man, who struggles deeply with his own fight for independence (i wasn't too sure on him at first, but he grows into just as much of an equally important character as the other two and i loved his arc).
currently reading: the earthsea quartet, by ursula le guin—i'm really loving it! it's probably not one of my favourites (yet), but she has such an interesting way of building up her world, and there's such a strong sense of compassion in every word she writes.
also i've recently found and fallen in love with this fic series. it's very nsfw and modern au's aren't usually my thing for historical (or even semi-historical) fiction/fantasy, but there's just something about sex worker!wei wuxian and translator!(and also secret fashion nerd!)lan wangji both being absolute disasters and also really cute and really repressed but also being neurodivergent and disabled characters (i'm SO here for autistic!lan wangji, traumatised!wei wuxian and chronically ill!yanli all being happy) and getting therapy that really appeals to me.
currently craving: crisps. always. of the salt and vinegar variety (this specific variety especially), of course, but there's never a day that passes when i'm not craving crisps
this was really fun!!! now for the worst part of this............ tagging. OKAY. so... please know that nobody is under any obligation to do, or even acknowledge, this—and also, if i missed you, you see this and you WANT to, then consider the act of seeing/hearing this a formal invitation

Hi,I loved the collection of autistic lan zhan fics that you found. I am wondering if you have found any where more people find out about Wei Ying giving Jiang Chen his golden core. Because in Untamed there is no overt mention of the golden core transfer and I haven't gotten that far in the translation of the novel, but I really just want to read everyone's reactions
First of all, thank you so much! This is my first ask and I am ecstatic. I have been kind of laying off the fic recs because I have been working on writing and some other projects. Plus there are so many other people that do it better than me. But I love finding fics! Check out @wangxianficrecs if you haven't already. I love her reviews and graphics. Plus she has a lot of great fics tagged under "golden core reveal" and I think you will find exactly what you are looking for there. In adition to those here are some of my favorite golden core fics along with some good tags to search:
AO3 Tags: Golden Core Reveal (Módào Zǔshī), Golden Core Transfer (Módào Zǔshī), Golden Core Transfer Fix-It (Módào Zǔshī), Wèi Yīng | Wèi Wúxiàn Has No Golden Core, Golden Core (Módào Zǔshī)
The Next Right Thing by Terri Botta (Isilwath)
When you are lost and hope is gone, but you must go on, sometimes all you can do is take a step, and do the next right thing (stolen shamelessly from Disney’s Frozen II), aka Zewu-Jun is not an obtuse idiot.

the meaning of the ritual by newamsterdam
When the entire cultivation world turns against the Yiling Patriarch, Wei Wuxian makes a risky gamble— he'll agree to participate in an ancient ritual for cleansing the spirit, so that his character can no longer be called into question. The catch? He has no idea who his partner for the ritual will be.

“Listen. Lan Zhan," Wei Ying says. "I know this whole thing, with — with the soul-switch, it’s upsetting. And believe me, I know my body is the last one on earth you’d want to be inside of.”
Lan Wangji chokes, then passes it off as a cough.

Top five sibling relationships in the Untamed?
I was going to say “there aren’t that many sibling relationships in The Untamed,” but then I realized there were a few I was forgetting. So here we go!
1. Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng. This is really the main emotional well for me! Just *gestures incoherently* the way they’re so close even though their home situation is kind of rigged to pit them against each other... the way they fight and bicker but are devoted to each other underneath... the way they express physical affection through shoving each other around.... it’s all very good. Also the way their relationship is emphasized even near the end of the novel with the late-stage reveal that Jiang Cheng allowed himself to be captured! He was willing to throw self-preservation into the wind - even with a responsibility to avenge his parents and take back Lotus Pier - just to save Wei Wuxian!
(Also the scene in CQL where he saves breakfast for WWX when the latter is in the Wens’ dungeon all night gives me warm fuzzies. He has no guarantee that Wei Wuxian will be coming back, but he’s desperately hoping that he will and is determined to fulfill his needs!)
What I really like about fic involving their reconciliation post-canon is that it’s one of the only times I’ve encountered gen fic that treats its central relationship like a romantic relationship. There’s pining, and there’s doubt that the other really sees them as a brother, but it’s all platonic! How often do you see that?
2. Wei Wuxian and Jiang Yanli. Again, a pretty obvious choice. I think there’s a lot of crunch to their relationship under the surface, though, which is part of what makes it compelling for me. JYL plays a caregiver role for both WWX and JC, and while they both adore her and would fight for her, I think they put her on a considerable pedestal and have a bit of trouble seeing her as her own person separate from them. There’s a kind of codependent dynamic between her and WWX, I think - something about the way he feels the need to become extremely Baby in order to ask for attention, and the way she seems to have a compulsive need to always forgive him no matter what he does.... there’s a lot of messy family history and personal neuroses buried under how they relate to each other, but(/and) I love them.
3. Lan Xichen and Lan Wangji. Took me awhile in my first watch to get attached to this relationship (I think because it took me awhile to realize who was related to who, and how) but I’ve grown so attached to them. Lan Xichen, along with Lan Sizhui, is someone that Lan Wangji only very rarely touches, but you can just tell how much he loves him - when they’re talking, you can see how facial expression relax a bit and his body language soften. I have a lot of feelings about Xichen being pushed into a caretaker role for his autistic younger brother at a very young age (yes, I subscribe to the autistic LWJ headcanon); LQR doesn’t offer a lot in the way of emotional validation, so LXC has to look after LWJ’s emotional needs while he’s still a child with his own grief to process. (The scene where young Xichen and LQR approach bb LWJ kneeling in the snow really implies to me that Xichen went to get LQR because he couldn’t get LWJ to move himself.) They have a lot of trauma bonding, and I think LXC fails to understand LWJ in some ways, but he also knows him LWJ better than anyone for a good portion of his life and does as best as he knows how with the massive responsibility put on him.
4. Jin Guangyao and Qin Su. A quality incest romance! A bit out of left field as a choice, maybe, but I am very moved by how much QS loves JGY and how All Out she goes in securing the marriage. And while we don’t see them interacting as siblings, I am very invested in AUs where they do both know and function as a collaborative politically scheming duo.
5. Jiang Cheng and Jiang Yanli. Yes, I’m including all three points of the Yunmeng triangle. This one features less screentime than the other two permutations, but I am very invested in it nonetheless. There’s a scene I noticed on this rewatch where Jiang Cheng sees JYL having a romantic moment with JZX and he turns away sadly because he’s feeling Abandoned. Just! I have so many feelings about how much Jiang Cheng must struggle with her getting married and having to leave Lotus Pier, especially since WWX has already defected. Yet he still puts so much effort into the wedding and determinedly tells her she looks beautiful in her dress ;___;
(I think there’s also a degree to which Jiang Cheng feels insecure in JYL’s love for him, and feels subconsciously like he’s competing with WWX for her attention. And that really compounds his grief over her death and his anger at WWX - the belief that JYL showing up on the battlefield at Nightless City and sacrificing herself at for him is in some way choosing WWX over him. And it upsets me.)
Honourary mentions: Jin Guangyao and Mo Xuanyu, who’ve been on my mind a lot due to working on my Lanling-set MXY/NHS fic, but whose relationship I still only have a fuzzy understanding of because Mo Xuanyu’s perspective is Rather Skewed; and Wen Qing and Wen Ning, who I find rather crunchy and therefore interesting but whose dynamic also makes me uncomfortable because of said crunchiness.

Untamed rewatch Episode 20
Wei Wuxian is back, and would like Jiang Cheng and Lan Zhan to know that he’s completely, totally fine, and not torturing people to death to cope or something
-my mom says wen chao is really good at looking crazy lmao
-I GASPED WHEN WWX SHOWED UP WITH THE FLUTE HE’S SO HOT
-god I love this music it’s so eerie and evocative
-the way it’s shown that jiaojiao and wen chao are being tormented by the spirits of people whose deaths they were responsible for...that’s so spicy. shout out to wei wuxian and his deeply twisted, horrific, but powerful sense of justice lmao.
-the scene where lwj and jc investigate all the dead wen cultivators is nice and spooky. I love the horror aspects of this show
-my sister pointed out that when someone tells jc that a woman hanged herself inside the office, he might’ve reacted as he did because he thought it was wen qing :(
-my mom complained about Netflix not translating the seal script on the talismans but my understanding is that it’s not language, as such
-oh I forgot about jiang cheng’s conversation with wen qing here. this is gonna hurt.
-“you have saved me after all” she has more than you know, jiang cheng
-hearing her very deliberately call him sect leader jiang is such a punch in the gut, both cause it’s a reminder of the fact that this man’s whole family is dead now, and because she’s drawing attention to the political situation that means he can’t reasonably help her. I think at this time in his life, jiang cheng really might’ve done everything in his power to protect her and her family, but that’s a narrow window of time, defined by the unstable situation of sunshot, his inexperience as sect leader, and the fact that he’s lost so much. once wei wuxian comes back, I think jiang cheng steps more fully into his role as sect leader, until the idea of protecting the wens is unthinkable.
-“you can save me but you can’t save them all” fuck this hurts so bad looking forward. another way jiang cheng is shown up by his brother - wei wuxian did manage to save wen qing’s family. but it didn’t and couldn’t last, just as she predicted.
-“he bled from all the holes of his head” is such a cool and gross thing to say lol
-okay again wen zhuliu is funnier on a rewatch. he hates this so much.
-the problem with the soundtrack here is that you sometimes can’t tell whether the flute is meant to be diegetic or not
-god the slowly ratcheting tension of wwx’s entrance... *chef’s kiss*
-when he starts playing, the background fades into the burial mounds for a few moments, and wei wuxian just smiiiiiles...fucking superb you funky little necromancer.
-love this random ghost lady we never see again
-oh boy. oh man. the first time I watched this show I spent episodes 14-19 yelling variations on HUG YOUR SIBLING GODDAMN IT, so when we got The Hug I broke. I think I may have actually cried.
-oh god, an arrangement of the lotus pier theme plays during The Hug
-just as wwx reaches up (slowly, uncertainly) to return the embrace, jiang cheng pulls away
-“how could I have been in the burial mounds? no one can survive that place” that’s as close as you’re going to get to a cry for help huh
-wei wuxian is so much...stiffer, less relaxed. his movements are more controlled, his gestures less expansive than they were pre-burial mounds. he does a little bit of the brat act when lwj talks to him but it looks artificial. he smiles earnestly when jiang cheng talks to him, but it doesn’t last long.
-“as for my temperament, I’m in control of my own mind” famous last words, my dude
-this argument is. oof.
-I’m not clear that it would’ve helped, I don’t think wwx trusted him enough, but if lwj could have just said “I care about you and I want you to be okay, I don’t think you’re in a good place” in so many words...Mm. But he would have to be a very different character. lan zhan is so defined by what he can’t say, what he doesn’t know how to say, and what he does say that gets misinterpreted because he’s expressing himself through the prism of the inflexible rules he was taught. concern on lan wangji looks too much like disapproval for poor neurotic wei wuxian to take it gracefully, and they both suffer for it!
-like, what’s happening here is that to lan zhan, wei wuxian is visibly Not Okay and is using resentful energy, which is fucked up, and jiang cheng is too thrilled over having his shixiong back to really notice. so he points out that resentful energy is really dangerous for the person who uses it, because he’s afraid for wei wuxian. and wei wuxian, on a hair trigger because he just barely survived three months of torture and sensitized to anything that even looks like disapproval by his shitty adoptive parents, interprets this as an insult - how dare you think I can’t handle this? how dare you see I can’t handle this, how dare you see that I’m suffering? and so he gets nasty and cutting, and lan zhan, who i’m absolutely sure doesn’t understand why wei wuxian is angry with him, gets angry right back. and wei wuxian says the most cruel thing he can: “this is an internal measure of yunmeng jiang, it’s none of your concern.” or, the way he’s intending it: i don’t care about your opinion and i don’t care about you.
-and lan zhan, unable to deal with it anymore, walks out, which we know he does when he’s angry, to go turn the words over in his head. this...honestly gives me autistic lwj feels. he’s trying so, so hard to reach out to wwx when that’s a really hard thing for him to do! he has a hard time relating to people! and he gets rebuffed in a way that makes it clear he’s failed to be a friend like he was trying to be and he doesn’t even know why. (which is not just on him, wwx is Not being forthcoming) and that sure is..an experience. which i have had.
-(i’m also imagining he picked up this method of handling his anger from xichen, personally. just walk away, wangji. don’t fight, no matter how much someone hurts you, no matter how wrong it feels :’)
-lwj’s expression when he listens to them killing wen chao reminds me of the rain scene ._.
-yanli as a medic feels kind of stereotypical but she’d be good at it
-the way yanli’s face changes when she hears wwx’s voice...i kind of haven’t liked her performance (mostly, i think, because she’s been given so little to do) but this little moment...wow
-my mom really wants to know what happened in the burial mounds! we had a conversation about dizi (wwx’s flute) vs xiao (lxc’s flute) also because. i looked it up lol. I might make a meta post since there’s some interesting details

I'll go for the obvious and ask for Wangxian ~
ship it, obviously, mxtx didn’t put a bunch of my favorite tropes in a blender so i could not ship it. i love their book dynamic too but in the interests of some amount of coherence and also not having this already long answer be twice the length, i’ll be sticking with the relationship they have in the show.
1. What made you ship it?
i was already pretty sure i was gonna ship it just by seeing gifsets and such show up on my dash and watching the show just confirmed it - one of my favorite dynamics is Loud nd one who’s like ‘hi, hi, look at me lets be frieeends’ and Quiet nd one who’s more reserved and/or repressed - and also the thing where two people are very much opposites/narratively set up or perceived to be enemies but there’s More going on than that.
but for them specifically? the rooftop fight scene is a really good meet cute, of course. (second meet cute? technically they met for 5 min earlier?) but the overall push-pull of their early relationship was so good, the interest and resentment and admiration (unwilling and not) and the realization that there’s more to the other one than meets the eye.
honorary mention to the fact that this ship also has the ‘if somebody has to kill me i’d rather it was you’ trope which is. just unfair. i was already invested, they didn’t need to come for me like that.
2. What are your favorite things about the ship?
ohhhh my god i could talk about this for way too long. just picking a few things, i adore the tension, in the flashback portion of the show, of lan wangji asking for permission to, and then trying to help wei wuxian control the resentful energy he’s dealing with. lw wanting to help/fix him balanced with wwx needing to make his own decisions/have autonomy over himself balanced with everyone else telling lwj that wwx is Dangerous and needs to be Stopped balanced with a lot of the decisions he made were dangerous and self-destructive balanced with there was no good choice in most of these situations and he needed to be able to make his own choices regardless.
as somebody who is. very mentally ill, the narrative of how support and control can bleed into each other is very cathartic for me, and the dynamic is just so messy and painful and full of devotion but also misunderstanding on both sides. it’s a great setup for a lot of genuinely intimate and comforting moments and also a lot of unavoidably hurting each other and making things worse.
i would also be remiss not to mention the - lan wangji being Obviously autistic and nonverbal and having issues with touch, and then! the narrative not making him change those things in order to get the relationship he wants! i know i’ve mentioned this before but i’ve been burned so badly by touch-repulsed or autistic-coded characters being judged or labeled unlovable for those things. lwj touching wwx more not bc he’s forced to but bc he’s growing closer to him is good, wwx growing to realize that lwj is just Like That with verbal communication and that they can make a relationship work with their different communication styles is good.
also just. the drama of society/nearly everyone you know being set against the person you love and choosing them anyway because you didn’t choose them the first time and you’ve had years on years to regret it. the drama of stepping outside your narrative role as hero or villain to be happy together. it’s a relationship that’s very Big and Theatrical and i adore it for that but also outside the big moments there’s such a focus on the tender, quiet ones. perfect balance.
3. Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?
mmmmm i suppose reading wwx as poly and thinking he should get to have other relationships as well might count? i just think there are many other people he cares about! and they should get the chance to be together as well, in whatever way they want, and i don’t think that lessens his relationship with lwj, or means it isn’t important and defining for both of them.
also i’m not sure if it’s an unpopular opinion, but i see a good amount of people saying they enjoy the show ending where they split up above the ending in the book? and it’s just not something that works for me. wwx and lwj have been through hell and back, and just found each other again; they deserve to scoot out of there and have a honeymoon and take care of themselves and catch up on all the sex they haven’t had for the past however many years.
