“This year has been kind of wild, hasn’t it?” Anna muses much, much later that evening, well into the second round of dessert. Elsa looks up, startled by the wave of somber thoughtfulness from Anna’s side of the table. She isn’t quite sure what’s going on in her own headspace, let alone her sister’s.
“I mean,” Anna’s face crumbles, and she hides it poorly, “between me moving around so much, and finding my new job, and. You know. Dealing with Hans.”
Elsa’s fingers tighten imperceptibly on the handle of her fork. She lets Anna talk, and offers her a single encouraging nod, precise and controlled. Anna’s mouth is brave, tiny smiles and courageous words, but her eyes glisten with disappointment, with fear, with countless questions that Elsa cannot answer.
“I guess I wasn’t expecting my life to really… turn out like this?”
That makes two of us, Elsa can’t help but think but doesn’t dare let the thought rise any closer to the surface. These thoughts are not fair, she knows. They are not real, or maybe they are, but perhaps they shouldn’t be; Elsa has made her own decisions, and Anna has made hers—because Anna is an adult, because she’s starting to think like one—and now the two of them are left to pick up the pieces.
“I can understand that feeling,” Elsa shares, reluctant to offer anything more encouraging, such as no one does, really, or there’s still so much more, and your life isn’t over yet. “Sometimes plans change.”
Anna makes a face. “Sometimes for the better,” she mutters darkly, grimacing into her cup of cold tea. Elsa faintly wonders when Anna will think to reheat it but lets her make that choice on her own; she tries to keep a tally in her head, these days, of how many choices she consciously relents to Anna. She knows Anna does not notice. “Like. A hell of a lot better.”
Elsa cracks an amused grin at the grit in Anna’s voice, of fire and violence, and you won’t fool me again, and allows herself a deep sigh of unexpected relief.
“It’s okay to blame me, you know,” Anna’s confession cuts through the contented haze of Elsa’s awareness. Her sister’s eyes are so honest, and all over again, Anna is breaking, breaking her heart. “You gave up your doctoral program for me.”
Elsa turns her gaze to the contents of her mug, still warm. Whatever she says next will stay in Anna’s heart forever; she wants to make sure the words are the right ones.
“I did,” she answers eventually. “But I left for me, too.”
“But you’ve been waiting for that opportunity your whole life,” Anna insists, and her cheeks are dry but there are tears in her voice, in her throat, in her essence. “You want it. And you gave it up, because I’m a mess.”
“No,” Elsa corrects. “I withdrew because life is a mess.” She thinks in sudden waves and flashes—of freedom, of feeling trapped by four walls and a bedroom set of furniture, of opportunity, of wanting escape but not knowing how to find it, of feeling crowded and alone, of realizing that control is relative and everything and nothing, and says, “It may not have been the best thing to do, but it was the best decision we could have made at the time. It happened because it needed to happen.” Elsa lets that sink in. “And I’ll go back someday.”
“When?” Anna wants to know.
But Elsa still doesn’t really have an answer.

I do not understand the lower property values movement (i mean i do but i don't agree with it) like. You realize more people coming here means more content creators? People who were previously only on Twitter or at very least not here? (Important for people like me who are Only here) That it means more people sharing and enjoying the works that are posted here?
I cannot stress enough how many people we lost from the porn ban and how much smaller all our communities got when people jumped ship. Having more people is a Good thing!!!
Also please don't harass people. I don't care if they're a 'celebrity'. There is a person behind that account and no one deserves death threats or bullying, Especially not for just wanting to share the space. Just Block people you find annoying! Curate your space!
We are not an island and frankly - isolationism isn't a great move even if you are one. Please celebrate and welcome new folks. So many of them are going to be boons to the communities we inhabit - and the rest you can still just block. Or more likely, won't even see because you're Not Following them.

Learning Chinese with Lyrics #03
(Countless)
(Joker Xue)
i don't think my chinese is at a level where I can understand any XZQ songs off the bat 😭 anyways, couldn't find any TLs I liked of this, so took a stab at it, with accompanying (& condensed) analysis from 万物归尘Snowflake! [warning: Long Post!]
[Prelude: The sound of heavy rain and repeated piano keys hints at the lonely man's fate: to walk alone in the darkness, seeking the right path despite his countless failures.]
There's a place that really exists
That has colors only compound eyes can see
Where no one has pockets
To store their anger and sorrow
真實 [zhēnshí] - real, true
敷衍 [fūyǎn] - compound eyes (insects)
憤怒 [fènnù] - indignant, anger
[S1: There exists a place, invisible to ordinary eyes, where people don't regret the past, nor resent the present.]
Please tell me you really exist
I'll climb over mountains and rivers to try again
Please grant me freedom and liberty
And put an end to those damned transactions
翻 [fān] - to climb/cross over
一切 [yīqiè] - everything
賜予[cìyǔ] - to bestow/gift (formal)
自在 [zìzài] - carefree
買賣 [mǎimài] - transaction/deal
[S2: The man's expectation that this extraordinary place exists gives him the strength to cross mountains and rivers to try again, despite his countless failures. He asks for freedom and an end to the unfair transactions in the world; liberation from the drive of money and greed that plagues the world today.]
Among those sinking countlessly
How can there still be a boat travelling thousands of miles?
It carries a naïve truth
While shouldering the crime of bravery
無數 [wúshù] - countless
萬里 [wànlǐ] - an immeasurably long distance
幼稚 [yòuzhì] - childish/naive
背負[bēifù] - to carry/bear
罪名[zuìmíng] - accusation
[S3: Faced with the chaos of the world, most choose to sink into the crowd, hiding themselves and accepting the world's injustice. The man breaks through the shackles of society's opinions, and braves the waves alone in the boundless ocean. Despite foreseeing his loneliness, he is willing to charge forward for the sake of his ideals. However, when he steps forward, his vision of the "perfect" future is childish and immature. In this moment of ignorance, his bravery becomes a "crime".]
Through my countless failures
Why do you still wander through destitution with me?
In all the parallel stories,
There has to be one where I don't disappoint you
失敗 [shībài] - to be defeated
憑 [píng] - on the basis of
顛沛 [diānpèi] - destitute
辜負[gūfù] - disappoint
[S4: A new character appears in the story: "you". Whether due to cowardice or fear, this "you" chooses to remain silent, but their heart is on the side of the brave, unlike those already numb and ignorant of the suffering of others. The man understands "you"'s difficulties, and encourage them to continue to believe in the light exists in parallel worlds/an unknown time in the future.]
What can I use to prove my existence?
That I see the colors imprisoned from the naked eye?
They always end up saying "it serves you right"
To dismiss all our helplessness
肉眼 [ròuyǎn] - naked eye
禁錮 [jìngù] - imprisoned
概括 [gàikuò] - summarize
無奈 [wúnài] - helplessness/desperation
[S5: As the world changes, those who sacrifice themselves for justice are still eventually forgotten. Before he reaches the holy place he envisioned at the beginning of his journey, he is lost to the sands of history. Some might express sympathy, but many believe he deserves his suffering.]
Among those sinking countlessly
How can there still be a boat travelling thousands of miles?
It carries a naïve truth
Flaunting it's justice with bare hands
炫耀 [xuànyào] - show off/flaunt
徒手 [túshǒu] - barehanded, unarmed
正義 [zhèngyì] - justice
[S6: The man, no longer bearing the crime of bravery in S2, is now more confident in his battle against injustice, no longer afraid of being labeled as guilty.]
Through our countless failures
I forgive you for not daring to come close
I'll let go of this childish truth
And raise the white flag over and over again
[S7: Switching from "people/人們” to “us/我們," as well as recognizing that being brave sometimes means that you have to compromise and surrender, gives the impression that the man has grown more reasonable in his journey, considerate of the "you"s who have ideas to make the world a better place yet are unable to do anything about it. ]
Through my countless failures,
Why do you wander through destitution with me?
In the next story
Let me give you the world
[S8: As the brave man falls, the courage hidden in the hearts of "you" will eventually be awakened. The crime does not exist within the countless failures of the brave, but rather in those who fail to step forward in the face of injustice. Now, the world is in "your" hands.]
