Welcome to Autumn!
Happy first Friday of Autumn! In the Northern hemisphere that is. I have great plans this weekend to get some pumpkins to decorate with. Per usual, I have gathered a list of some things I am enjoying. Hopefully you’re able to find something interesting for your weekend.
Several books that I am reading through, depending on the day:
The Talisman by Sir Walter Scott, the second of Scott’s Tales of the Crusades. Fascinating so far, Scott is very descriptive which I am enjoying.
The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan, the first in the Percy Jackson series. I’ve watched the movie, which is supposedly (according to my sister) not as true to the book as it could be. Thankfully Rick Riordan is working with Disney+ to release a series, that is proving to be very well adapted.
Little Women by Louisa May Alcott, Louisa’s most well known piece of work. I so enjoy this book and it always makes me think of Autumn/Winter, so it’s a must to read right now.
Here’s some music that I have been enjoying:
Orange Colored Sky - YouTube, Nat King Cole can do no wrong. And this, this is what I want to listen to all of Autumn. Preferably somewhere chilly, rainy, and with all the orange colored things.
Everyone Loves A Villain - When Doves Cry (Official Lyric Video)#prince #whendovescry - YouTube, I have been listening to this cover of When Doves Cry, anything made rock I’m a fan of…well almost anything.
Ne me quitte pas (Jacques Brel) - [English subtitles] - YouTube, this song has such a beautiful sadness to it. I must have first heard it on the radio and hunted down an Amazon download for it years before Apple music and Spotify and YouTube had the song available.
Dusty Springfield - If You Go Away - YouTube, I just this week found Dusty’s version of the song and I really love it as well.
Josh Turner - Forever And Ever, Amen (Acoustic Performance) ft. Randy Travis - YouTube, I love Randy Travis, he reminds me of my childhood and I always see my cousin’s and a friend in my mind when I hear his music. Josh Turner, who has a beautiful voice, covered Forever and Ever, Amen a few years ago and it’s such a beautiful tribute to Randy. And the very last word sung, is sung by Randy.
Cool stories:
Australia’s Great Barrier Reef erupts in color as corals spawn (nypost.com), Did you know that in 2021 “scientists revealed that two-thirds of the Great Barrier Reef showed the highest coral cover since recording began in 1985”?!
Foo Fighters ft. Shane Hawkins Perform "My Hero" | MTV - YouTube, Taylor Hawkins, the Foo Fighters’ drummer died earlier this year. The Foo Fighters had a tribute concert recently and had several guest drummers. Shane, who is Taylor’s 16 year old son, performed “My Hero” with them at the concert. And he, is, so, so good. His dad would be so proud.
"How beautifully leaves grow old. How full of light and color are their last days."
- John Burroughs

Mastering the Art of Learning: Understanding Types, Overcoming Barriers, and Enhancing Your Skills
Learning is a dynamic and essential process that impacts individuals throughout their lives. It goes beyond just academics; it is a lifelong journey that enhances our personal and professional development. In this blog, we will explore the types of learning, barriers that hinder effective learning, and ways to improve our learning experiences.
Types of Learning
Classical Learning: This type of learning, illustrated by Ivan Pavlov, involves stimulus-response associations that lead to desired behaviors. For example, a student learns to recognize a location on a map through repeated association with verbal cues.
Trial and Error Learning: Trial and error, often accompanied by insight, has led to countless discoveries and inventions. Thomas Edison's persistence through approximately 10,000 attempts before inventing the light bulb is a prime example.
Chain Learning: Learning can be a sequence of interconnected steps, like learning to drive a car, where each step builds upon the previous one.
Concept Learning: This involves identifying commonalities between two or more things. For instance, recognizing that cucumbers and pumpkins belong to the same plant family simplifies learning about various plant family members.
Observational Learning: Learning from watching others and assessing the consequences of their behavior. When one person receives praise for attentiveness in class, it encourages others to exhibit the same behavior.
Operant Learning: Behavior is influenced by past experiences, where favorable consequences encourage repetition. A change in behavior can be achieved by manipulating the outcomes.
Barriers in Learning
Several obstacles can hinder effective learning:
Bad posture
Tiredness
Lack of maturity in relation to the subject matter
Uninteresting or complex material
Frequent breaks during study
Overcoming these challenges is crucial to prevent stress and optimize the learning process.
Improving Your Learning
Enhancing the learning experience involves several strategies:
Organize Learning Material: Arrange learning materials in a meaningful way to aid retention.
Recitation: Practicing recitation helps identify errors and reinforces memory.
Whole vs. Part Methods: Learn small concepts as a whole and break down larger subjects into parts for better comprehension.
Practical Application: Hands-on learning can greatly enhance understanding and retention.
Mental State: Maintain a peaceful and positive mental state to facilitate learning.
Clarity of Concepts: Ensure you grasp the fundamental concepts as they are the building blocks of understanding.
Interest and Association: Maintain your interest and create associations to make learning engaging and effective.
Repetition: Revisit the material frequently to strengthen your understanding.
Self-Motivation: Find your inner drive and motivation to achieve your learning goals.

It isn’t the quantity but the quality of an experience.
Every day I learn a new lesson. Message of the Week:
It isn’t the quantity but the quality of an experience. Who shows up does NOT measure the scale of your purpose.
First week we began a training program, which required an 80-mile drive plus 4 hours of time, over two days with the expectation of 10 attendees. As we waited for class to begin, there were two people (Jazmine - a young woman with her son- Tajah) eager to attend and begin learning our 3D Model of Sustainability™, using plants for Education (STEM), Food, Health and Mental Wellness and Enterprise.
At first, the son Tajah was immersed in his tablet with his earbuds, not paying much attention to us. Once we started the presentation describing the class, he put down his earbuds/tablet, pulled up a chair next to his mom Jazmine and was “All on Board” . He not only offered information to Ms. Stinson, his mom and I about plants, environments and more, he asked if he could miss school to attend the next day’s class. When asked how he got so smart, he said, “his mother” and then proceeded to ask for a weekend class to learn about growing plants, STEM and even enterprise!
Now we are into Week 2, Tajah and Jazmine are going strong and have strengthened my belief that there are confirmations when you are on the right path. It may not always be easy, however the scale of the contribution to generational education and life skills is unmeasurable.
Stay tuned for more information about our non-profit organization, Next Generation Harvest move to the Dominican Center, Milwaukee, WI. The Dominican Center was previously my elementary school - St. Leo’s and where we began our mission to provide hydroponics as a tool of learning, sustainable food, and income possibilities. We are looking forward to 2023 for exciting new adventures and changes for the future.

A list for the 2nd Friday of 2024
Welcome to  2024….12 days in!
I hope that thus far your year has gone well. I personally enjoy the resetting of a new year, when you can implement new focuses, improve older ones, and look forward to growth and fun. I’ve included a list of some bits and bobs I’ve been enjoying and found interesting as well as some photos.
Hopefully you find something to enjoy and have a great weekend.
The ‘$40 Pencil’ That Almost Went Extinct (wsj.com)
John Steinbeck used one to write “The Grapes of Wrath” and a Disney animator was buried with one. Blackwing pencils gained a coveted status among creatives for their speed and smoothness. Here’s why they almost went extinct and what it took to bring them back.
The lost ancient practise of communal sleep (bbc.com)
Until the mid-19th Century, it was completely normal to share a bed with friends, colleagues and even total strangers.
Masters of the Air — Opening Title Sequence | Apple TV+ - YouTube
Based on Donald L. Miller’s book of the same name, and scripted by John Orloff, “Masters of the Air” follows the men of the 100th Bomb Group )the “Bloody Hundredth”) as the conduct perilous bombing raids over Nazi Germany and grapple with the frigid conditions, lack of oxygen, and sheer terror of combat conducted at 25,000 feet in the ir. Portrating the psychological and emotional price paid by these young men as they helped destroy the horror of Hitler’s Third Reich, is at the heart of “Masters of the Air.” Some were shot down and captured; some were wounded or killed. And some were lucky enough to make it home. Regardless of individual fate, a toll was exacted on them all.
A Notebook to Save You from Infinite Scrolling & Boredom (youtube.com)
In this video, Parker gives an idea for a pocket notebook that can help free you from the infinite scroll and help you utilize your boredom for your own intellectual good.
Music’s power over your brain, explained | Michael Spitzer (youtube.com)
Music affects the brain in profound ways. It eases stress by lowering cortisol. It floods the brain with pleasurable neurotransmitters like dopamine. And it serves as a conduit through which we can process emotions that otherwise might not be describable in words.
If I Had a Heart - VIKINGS // Anna Miilmann, Johan Karlström & Danish National Symphony Orchestra (youtube.com)
Performed by Anna Miilmann, Johan Karlström & Danish National Symphony Orchestra & Vocal Ensemble Conducted by Henrik Vagn Christensen
How a 1574 portrait was made 'Insta-fabulous' (bbc.com)
Restorers are uncovering "forgotten faces" that were later retouched, with painters adding plump lips, sculpted noses and tapered chins centuries afterwards, writes Kelly Grovier.
The Habits for Happiness Quiz | Gretchen Rubin
A fun quiz to help you choose what the next habit that could make you happier might be.
