Oh Deer, That Seems Like Trouble

"Now that is a big deer," Tora was dumbfounded by the size of the thing. It wasn't the hugest creature they'd seen on The Merchant's quest, but still, it was a deer! They weren't supposed to get that large. She was only eyeballing, but she doubted the top of her head would come to its shoulder. Maybe Manus would, but it'd be a close thing.             "I'm not so worried about the size as I am about what's going on with its antlers. Runes on animals aren't usually a good thing, and them glowing like that seems even worse," It was Manus who spoke, the big man himself. "Still, I'd wager a rune-powered deer is better than something like a rune-powered dragon," He mused with a glance at Tora. "Brawling with it should feel better than punching scales."             Tora didn't exactly feel like getting close to the giant deer. Doing so would require that she avoid getting gored in the attempt, and without armor, she didn't like her odds. And why was he suggesting that she go up and deal with it? He was the one wearing armor!             "Ya know, I think I'll sit this one out. Besides, aren't you supposed to go hunting with a weapon? Manus, you're better equipped to handle it no matter how you slice it,"

            She had a point. Manus looked at the deer and then glanced down at his armor. Usually, it would've kept him safe, but he was still wary of those antlers. If those things were magical, as he assumed, there was no guarantee they wouldn't punch through his armor like so much parchment.

            "Do we have to fight it? We could wake Torin up and have him speak to it." It was Leetha who spoke. She'd been watching the deer while Manus and Tora talked, and it hadn't moved against them. Oddly enough, it had been turning its head from one speaker to the next like it was following along with the conversation. Torin was still leaning up against a pine tree, fast asleep. He had taken the night watch, so they'd let him sleep while they packed up. They hadn't noticed their woodland onlooker until they'd finished.

            "Yeah, I like that idea much better," Tora hurriedly backed up and went over to shake Torin awake. "Wake up, sleepy. We've got a big furry friend for you to meet."

            Torin woke up a bit sluggishly. He'd been sleeping for about six hours. Not a healthy amount of sleep, but enough to function off of for a day. He grumbled and rubbed his eyes before opening them. He slowly registered it was Tora who'd woke him up.

            "Time move?" He asked sleepily.

            "Kinda," Tora answered, making the matching hand gesture. She was proud of herself for getting used to Torin's broken Common. Torin got to his feet, muttering something in Elvish while patting off what dirt he could. Tora gestured toward the deer and shrugged. "We could use your critter skills."

            Torin's bravery regarding forest creatures proved to be invaluable. He stepped past Manus with a touch to his shoulder and approached the deer with his arms out and palms turned upward. It was watching him but still hadn't moved aside from that. He got within spitting distance before speaking to it in Sylvan, letting it know they meant no harm. The deer's ears twitched in acknowledgment and turned so its side was toward them. It dug at the soft earth with its hoof. Tora could barely make out the confused expression on Torin's face.

            "What'd it say, buddy?" It came out with a bit more concern than she'd intended.

            Torin turned his head to look at them and shrugged. "Follow."

The Time Lord shrugged. 'I don't think that it will be too much of a problem. I think it was you yourself who pointed out that such things are a little looser and more complex here. I wouldn't know about such things myself, of course.'

'Ah yes,' Benny said. 'Time Lords don't concern themselves with little things like that. You just screw the entire - oh, hi, Chris. Hello, Roz. Hello, Sgloomi.'

How to celebrate Litha- by Mabons House

A lesser known Pagan holiday, Litha (pronounced LEEtha) occurs during the Summer Solstice between June 19 -22.  More commonly referred to as Midsummer’s Night, Litha is believed to be a time when faerie folk pass into the human world at Twilight and offer blessings.  Litha is a time to celebrate the abundance and beauty of Mother Earth.  Flowers are in bloom and gardens are producing fresh vegetables and fruits.  Gather family and friends to celebrate the longest day of the year and coming harvest season. 

HISTORY OF LITHA

Midsummer Night is the shortest night of the year and has been celebrated in some fashion since ancient times.  In Pagan tradition, Litha marked the end of the Oak King’s reign and the rise of the Holly King, who oversees the world as the days gradually get shorter as the world descends into the cold dark of winter.  Like Beltane, fire is an element of Litha. Bonfires were lit to assist the sun as it journeyed across the sky, changing course and shortening the days.  It was believed that the faerie realm was the most accessible during Midsummer Night.  Litha was also a celebration of the Celctic goddess Danu (Anu) who represents earth and fruitfulness.  According to Irish mythology Danu was the Universal Mother of Tuatha De Danaan - a tribe of ancient people in Ireland believed to have invaded Ireland and ruled until being defeated in war on midsummer’s day, after which they retreated to the hills and eventually became the Faerie folk.  As Christianity swept across Europe in the early middle ages, Litha / Midsummer Night was adopted by the Catholic church as St. John’s Day, celebrating John the Baptist.  

SETTING INTENTIONS AT LITHA

 Litha is a good time to align yourself with the powerful energies of the sun and summertime.  Everything is growing and expanding and now is the time to expand your ideas, business, goals or desires. And like all Wheel of the Year Sabbats, Litha is an opportunity to show gratitude for all that you have and thank Mother Earth for her bounty.  Litha is also a time to acknowledge your successes thus far in the Wheel of the Year.

Colors:  Blue, green, yellow, pink, purple (look to nature for the colors of Litha, as seen in the sky, woods and flowers)

Pronunciation Of The Wiccan Holidays

The names that are generally used to denote the Wiccan sabbats (as well as festivals of many pagan traditions) come from Gaelic (both Scots and Irish), Welsh, Norse, and Anglo-Saxon. There are variations of pronunciations for each one.

Samhain (31 Oct)

Irish Gaelic for "summer's end." The standard Irish pronunciation is "sow-in" with the "ow" like in "cow." Other pronunciations that follow with the many Gaelic dialects include "sow-een" "shahvin" "sowin" (with "ow" like in "glow").

The Scots Gaelic spelling is "Samhuin" or "Samhuinn." There is no linguistic foundation for saying this word "samhane" the way it might look if it were English. When in doubt, just say "Hallows" or even "Hallowe'en."

Yule (21 Dec)

Norse for "wheel." It's pretty much pronounced just like it looks, although if you want to make a stab at a Scandinavian sound, it'll be more like "yool" and less like "yewl." This is the winter solstice.

Imbolg/Imbolc (1 Feb)

Irish Gaelic for "in the belly." Pronounce this one "IM-bullug" or "IM-bulk" with a guttural "k" on the end. Other names include Candlemas; Brighid (pronounced "breed"), who is the Irish goddess whose festival this is; and Oimelc (pronounced EE-mulk), which means "ewe's milk" in Scots Gaelic.

Ostara (21 Mar)

Saxon name for a maiden goddess of spring, loosely connected to Astarte and Ishtar. This one's easy -- "o-STAHR-uh." Other names include Eostre (say "OHS-truh" or "EST-truh"). This is the spring equinox.

Beltane/Bealtaine (30 April)

Irish Gaelic for either "fires of Bel" or "bright fires." If you want to try it in Gaelic, you can say "bee-YAWL-tinnuh" or "BELL-tinnuh." Unlike Samhain, this word can within the linguistic structure of its language of origin be pronounced like it looks -- "BELL-tane" -- without totally abandoning its original construction. Other names are Walpurgisnacht (vawl-PUR-gis-nahkt) and May Day.

Litha (21 Jun)

Norse or Anglo-Saxon for "longest day." You can say this one just like it looks, or you can try for a Scandinavian sound and say "leetha" with the "th" more like a "t." This is the summer solstice.

Lughnasadh/Lunasa or Lammas (1 Aug)

The first is Irish Gaelic for "festival of Lugh" (a major Irish deity); the second is Anglo-Saxon for "festival of the loaves" ("hlaf-mass"). Don't panic at that spelling; the second (which is modern Irish as opposed to old Irish) tells you all you need to know.

Say "LOO-nah-sah." (Some people maintain that the Scots dialect says it "LOO-nah-soo.") Lammas is just like it looks, "LAH-mus."

Mabon (21 Sep)

This is believed to be a form of the Welsh word for "son." Therefore, it would probably be pronounced "MA-bon" with the "a" like in "mass." However, most Wiccans and pagans say "MAY-bon." This is the autumn equinox.
