Falloutober Day 5 - This Thing Called Defeat
Context: This is my OC Ves (Pronounced Wes, from Vesunius) As you can see, things don't go too well for him at the beginning of his story.
During a fight with an NCR patrol, Ves's helmet was knocked off and he ended up smacking his head when he was tripped when the helmet was only half off and he couldn't see well.
The NCR soldier he was fighting got off a shot at him before he was taken down by another Legionary, though Ves wasn't awake to know that his hip had been just about shattered.
When he woke, the Legion was cleaning up, and one of the veteran soldiers was going body to body and finishing off any NCR that were downed, and taking any Legionary that couldn't be saved out of their misery. In a 14 karat run of bad luck, the one mercy killing this time was someone who really, really, hated his guts (too long a story to attach here), and so he woke up to the man gloating, and then driving a spear though his chest before leaving to let their Decanus know that Ves had been lost in the battle.
The Mojave sun dried the blood of the battlefield, and Ves succumbed to his injuries- praying to Mars, even though he knew this was a pathetic death.
Then, he woke up again, in a shack he didn't recognize, and with people he did not know, life changed forever.

Archaeologists working on a site near a famous Swiss Roman camp have discovered far more extensive ruins than they expected. Now the race is on to see what is there before the site is redeveloped.

Historically inspired Hyrule! Mixing it up a little off the medieval theme of the last two, this time doing Roman Republic. Hyrule's fighting style in game is very roman so I wanted to reflect that in my redesign. I also tried using a maille brush to draw the maille instead of drawing the rings individually like on the last two, I think there's pros and cons to both looks but it's certainly far far faster with the brush.
I opted for a short and stocky build instead of the typical skinny build for Hyrule as I've always imagined him being that way especially that he casually will fight 8+ blue Lynels or Darknuts at once and win. Overall I think my favorite part of this design was the little ear guards on the helmet, while they are featured on a lot of roman helmets making them long enough to protect Hylian ears ended up with a silly look that I enjoy a lot.

ITEM Military helmet face mask fragment with Jupiter's eagle MATERIAL Bronze CULTURE Roman PERIOD 3rd Century A.D DIMENSIONS 180 mm x 123 mm CONDITION Good condition PROVENANCE Ex Alison Barker private collection, a retired London barrister, acquired between 1960s - 1990s BIBLIOGRAPHY RUCINSKI, E., Get the picture?: Iconography of cheek pieces on Roman Imperial cavalry helmets, Journal of Roman Military Equipment Studies Roman military equipment is famous for its abundance of depictions rife with symbolical content. The so-called cavalry sports equipment, which used to be seen as being solely parade armour, can be distinguished from the infantry equipment not only by its function, but also by its design. There are numerous surviving heavily ornamented parts of Roman cavalry equipment and a number of studies have been published on their purpose and decoration. Whether the ornamented equipment belonged to parade armour or was also worn in battle is still under discussion. One of those groups contains the helmets, of which a relatively large number of different variations exist. Apart from the calotte with its neck guard, the loosely attached cheek pieces were also an essential part of the helmet. Cheek pieces as protective elements were used both for infantry and cavalry helmets. Read the full article

The soldiers of the #Roman #Army were some of the greatest in history. The journey from citizen to soldier wasn’t an easy one, beginning with four months of arduous basic training.
