#lip reading
Note
Hi, I'm writing a story where a recurring character is deaf, I've modelled his relationship to deafness on a deaf tiktoker I like, so like her, he has a hearing aid, but predominantly uses sign language and lip reading. This story has a very diverse set of characters, and as such there is a girl with a speech impediment related to cerebral palsy, and multiple first generation immigrants who speak broken English. Would my deaf character have a harder time than hearing people understanding these people just via lip reading? This is a story set in the real world, so most people don't know sign language, but everyone is fully literate, so they can communicate writing down if that's practical (I've only ever done that myself in busy clubs)
Hi!
Lip reading is really hard, and unfamiliar accents make lip reading even harder. It gets easier the better your character knows these other characters—if they’re people he’s known his whole life, it will be easier than with someone he just met.
Keep in mind that lip-reading alone can only get about 30% of what is said, at maximum. Getting that much is for lip-reading pros! It’s not the standard lip-reader’s experience. With whatever hearing he has, both residual and with his hearing aids in, he will be able to gather more, though definitely not all, of what is being said.
Plus, lip-reading is exhausting. It requires constant attention, and the mental energy of filtering through sounds and filling in gaps is very taxing. (This is called listening fatigue.) Your character may start conversations lip-reading and ask to switch to writing or sign language because listening is getting too overwhelming.
In all, depending on how much hearing he has, lip-reading may end up not being the most efficient for him. Lip-reading is a supplement, not an independently effective method of communication.

this is how the motivation is byler endgame. okay so this the theory.
1
the "you have to improve your motivation" is obviously about how mike is depressed & needs to improve his own motivation for coming out. & he's just pulling a will byers right here & projecting his feelings onto el.
2
the local village. guys we need to stop supporting this local village agenda because obviously the party doesnt return to the local village because they've seen too much. want to know why??? because the local village is HOMOPHOBIC. & that's why they don't go back.
3
the beautiful land with the waterfalls. as yonta explained in my chat, water is H^2 O. Yknow what that spells? hoo. not hoe, hoo which is exactly ONE letter off from homo. also three waterfalls? do you know what else has three sides? a triangle. yknow what symbol can represent gay people? a triangle. a PINK triangle. yknow what the heart is? red & pink is a shade of red giuys. mike is the heart, the heart CAN be pink, pink tirangle, triangle three sides, three waterfalls canon. & then el asks if thats possible & mike thinks that she might be on to him so he has to retract about the gay. but dont worry,, we all know what this really means.

listen I'm just here to remind everyone that where possible, if you're so inclined, do watch CR on video rather than just podcasts. Because if you're listening-only you would be missing out on such amazing material as the sub-conversation game of "Hey! ... Nevermind" that went around the table in C2E95 and that is Prime Content my friend.

“TRUST ME”
There’s been a few confirmations (most importantly from Neil Gaiman himself) that just before the Bullet Catch trick, Aziraphale mouths the words “trust me”.
This was confusing to me as it looked nothing like “trust me”. However, thinking about how Aziraphale and Crowley know every language in the world, I can only guess he’s not speaking English.
As a big deal was made around Aziraphale speaking French in S2E5, I looked into the French meaning of “trust me”:
Tumblr media
Not sure if it completely marries up with Aziraphale’s lips but it’s definitely closer than trust me imo:
If it’s not French (Fais-Moi Confiance) then it MUST be a different language.
Thoughts?

Comfortable Silence
by WritersBlock823 (rdlaserna)
E, 65k, Wangxian
Summary: Wei Ying covers his mouth, eyes wide and tearful, then turns and runs back towards the subway station where the expensive-coat man has disappeared to. He hopes he hasn’t caught his train yet as he runs, giggles bursting out from his chest. As he enters the station, he glances around and immediately spots the back of the expensive-coat man. He’s waiting patiently among a group of passengers getting on a train. Wei Ying rushes forward and just barely manages to slip the man's wallet into the opposite coat pocket than it was retrieved from. The doors close behind the man, Wei Ying’s hand barely grazing the doors as he pulls it back. The man looks down and pulls his wallet from his pocket, looking confused. He turns, then, golden eyes meeting silver. Wei Ying’s breath catches. He’s the most beautiful man he’s ever seen. Long, curling lashes framing piercing golden eyes. Pale skin as white and smooth as jade. A sharp jawline leading towards a long neck featuring a prominent Adam's apple. His lips are plump and pink, and Wei Ying wonders what they’d feel like pressed against his own. Wei Ying grins at the man and mouths, “Just returning your stolen property! Be more careful of pickpockets!”
Kay's comments: This story was a joy to read and super funny too! In which Wangxian meet after Wei Ying returns Lan Zhan's stolen wallet and Lan Zhan makes it so that they will be roommates in their university dorm and they immediately hit it off Wangxian fashion! This story also features deaf Lan Zhan, who keeps his disabbility a secret in the beginning, but let's just say, Wei Ying is more observant than he expected! The angst was very minimal in this story and all misunderstandings are resolved without much drama, which I enjoyed a lot. I also love how Wangxian can't keep themselves from being accidental exhibitionists because they just can't wait to get their hands on each other.
Excerpt: “Mn,” the man replies, his voice much deeper than Wei Ying expected, and it sends a shiver down his spine. “When I was asked if I wanted a roommate, Uncle showed me a list of students seeking one. I saw your face, and recognized you. I wanted to thank you for returning my wallet. I saw the video posted online of the man who’d stolen it, and how you were able to get it back.” Wei Ying throws his head back and laughs. “That was a lot of fun.” The man’s lips twitch slightly, his eyes watching his mouth as he speaks before returning his gaze, which seems to be full of what Wei Ying thinks is amusement, and hums, “Mn,” once more. They stare at each other in silence for a moment, but it doesn’t feel awkward. “I’m glad I was able to help last week. I wasn’t sure I’d ever see you again. I don’t even know your name. I didn’t take the time to look in your wallet - I just ran to try and find you before you disappeared on a train.” “Lan Zhan,” his roommate replies, a gleam in his eyes. “And you’re Wei Ying.” Wei Ying swallows hard, liking way too much how his name sounds on Lan Zhan’s tongue, and smiles. “That’s me. I’m glad to meet you officially, Lan Zhan.” Ooh, he likes how that feels on his tongue. Lan Zhan, Lan Zhan, Lan Zhan….why do you keep looking at my mouth?

I'm so jealous of Zayn, Louis used to tell him a lot of things
https://youtube.com/shorts/2ttdfOVliRE?si=cU1OO7VoTIQ2H0uG
Are there any other videos of Louie that confirm he is saying exactly the same thing?
No there wasn’t I think. It’s hard to confirm anyway but I find the first part quite fitting, but the second part makes no sense to me. Why would he think of her to begin with?
I think lip reading is lots of fun but I wouldn’t take it too seriously.

One of the most annoying things you can do to someone with hearing loss that needs to read lips is to tell them to read something, then stand behind them and continue with your commentary. Either they can turn around to look at you and not read or read and not catch any of what you're saying. And you get mad at them for not listening and not reading simultaneously?

let me hear you say

T, 9k, Wangxian
Summary: Lan Wangji grew up in a cursed world of silence. People around him say words spoken were more convenient and took less effort than learning how to sign, or to use spiritual energy to communicate. Lan Wangji secretly enjoyed the silent comfort in the knowledge that he can only speak with people he can trust. Until Wei Wuxian asks a question that confuses him, What language do you speak, Lan Zhan? ... Lan Wangji learns of languages he never knew to speak before.
Kay's comments: This story has such an interesting concept! This takes place in a world where everyone is cursed to be unable to speak to someone unless they love/trust that person. So, members of a family or lovers can talk to each other, but only if there's a mutual bond of trust. Instead, there are different ways of communications, sign language, lip reading, writing, etc. And it's just super cute to see Wangxian figure out which language to speak to each other and how to communicate, because this curse forces everyone to pay very close attention to even the smallest tells and I loved that.
Excerpt: Wei Wuxian turns to write again. For example, this is my language. Wei Wuxian puts down the paper and extends his arms. When Lan Wangji only looks at him, Wei Wuxian starts wiggling his fingers, then his shoulders, and then a pout appears. Lan Wangji still does not understand him. Wei Wuxian sighs. He starts signing, his hands and fingers moving carefully slow, learned from all the times Lan Wangji stared at him when he could not understand the flurry of hand movements Wei Wuxian used to sign the first few times. It's a hug! I speak in hugs! Lan Wangji nods to indicate he understood.
pov lan wangji, curses, curse breaking, friends to lovers, getting to know each other, developing relationship, canon-divergence, mute lan wangji, mute wei wuxian, kinda, sign language, lip reading, love languages, falling in love, soft, fluff, everybody lives, cloud recesses study arc, sunshot campaign

Wrong Place Wrong Time
I didn't feel up for writing yesterday, so today we start with yesterday's prompt "Banter"! I wanted to use this one to introduce a new character that I haven't been able to use anywhere yet. So, here's Hype the Frost Pixie, making his debut in true pixie fashion by getting in trouble.
~~~
Hype blinked several times, a slow attempt to reorient himself after the chaotic movement he’d just endured, not to mention the several times he’d tumbled against the harsh metal all around him. The presence of iron, thin bars of the stuff arranged in an orderly fashion, tickled his skin like pin feathers. He might not be the most powerful pixie out there, but he was magical enough for it to count.
There was no time to be grumpy about the iron of the cage, or even about the bruises already forming where he’d bumped into it. He had to try to focus on the human that had tossed him in there.
The man had already said a lot to him. His mouth was moving rapidly, and the hand not clinging to the top of the cage gestured wildly. Hype, seated on a metal floor that actively made his skin crawl, had a hard time parsing anything out of the faint, infinitesimal mumbles that he could make out, to say nothing of the rapidly moving mouth. He stared, squinting and trying to concentrate, and got little more than he would if he were to close his eyes and listen. Considering how harshly the guy had grabbed him and tossed him in a cage, he wasn’t sure why he ought to bother trying to understand him.
Judging by what he could see of the man’s attire‒thick cloth shirt, sturdy leather gloves, a bow slung to his back, and a bandanna tied around his neck for an easy-access mask‒he was a scout of some kind. A scout with a small camp near a riverbank who did not take kindly to a lone pixie buzzing nearby.
There was a pause as the man stopped talking and fixed Hype with an expectant look. When Hype continued to stare blankly at him, he scoffed and rolled his eyes. Then, his lips formed a very clear “Well?”
Hype crossed his arms and fixed an unimpressed look on the face looming close. His wings, long and narrow and clear like warped ice, flickered in annoyance at his back. He’d learned to talk back, though he couldn’t hear how clear or how loud his own voice would be when he responded. “Well what? I don’t know what you want to hear.”
It was tempting to throw in some quick handspeak to emphasize his point, but he doubted this human knew any of the common fae signs. The rest, Hype had devised with his family as needed.
Luckily, his sign language was clearly not needed. His response had already taken the wind out of the human’s sails, at least enough that his shoulders sagged and he didn’t lean over the cage quite as much. “Di- you no- -ear me?” he asked, slower now that his frantic interrogation had been derailed.
Reading lips had never been an exact science, though Hype found it a lot easier to fill in the gaps when talking to the big folk than when he was chatting with a fellow pixie. He tilted his head, still managing to appear for all the world like he was unbothered. “I didn’t hear that either,” he said. This time, he did include some handspeak for emphasis, gesturing emphatically to one ear before pointing to his mouth. “But you are talking slower so I caught it this time. Kind of you to let me catch up.”
The human’s frown deepened, and he glanced away from the cage at last. Nearby the river rushed on, and overhead the trees waved in the breeze. Hype assumed they made sounds, though he’d never really asked anyone what they were like. He waited with narrowed eyes for the man to decide what he would do with the startling realization that his rant moments ago had effectively been to no one.
Large shoulders moved up and down in a sigh, meaning Hype’s cage moved up and down too. He considered knocking on the bars to bring the attention back to himself, but he didn’t want to touch them. Instead, he spoke up again, “Well? What do you want, merry man? Usually it’s pixies playing tricks on the big folk. Not the other way around.”
The man scowled at him. He said something, quick and snappy, probably a scathing retort. Hype held up his hands in feigned exasperation, and the guy looked like he’d bitten a lemon before saying, more slowly, “I know those bastar-s good (no, could, Hype corrected in his head as he parsed) use a deaf pixie scou- to snea- their messages aroun-. You’re -oming with me.”
Well, so much for gentle banter and building a rapport. Hype frowned and opened his mouth to protest, but he lost his voice as the man leaned down to drop the cage on the ground, then turned away. He could only watch as the guy started gathering up his meager camp, resolutely refusing to look over at the cage and saying nothing to the frost pixie trapped within it. Hype didn’t see the point in trying to ask who “those bastards” were. Apparently the big folk were at war again, or at least at conflict, and Hype had wandered into it by mistake.
Surrounded as he was by iron, he couldn’t summon so much as a snowflake to his aid. Until he found out more and maybe got a chance to talk to someone with some sense of reason, he would have to bide his time. Pixies weren’t exactly known for patience, but Hype thought he could manage.
If nothing else, he’d get a halfway interesting story out of all this.
