volume vii thoughts

as per usual I have complaints about the missed opportunities of casa

first things first, the casa boys' sprites looked bad to me when I saw that post fusebox made but after playing for like a minute, I was like nah actually they're quite fine. However, prettiest sprites they're competing with are Jin, Claudia, Oakley, Tyler, and Bea so the competition is rough. Also idk something is throwing me off with Shawn and especially Kyle's face shapes.

I think last post I made I said Hari at least got more of a chance than Tyler, but scratch that actually, it feels like they got the same chance because suddenly we're in casa and hardly any mention of him, even though he and my MC have kissed a few times already and she hasn't really rejected him fully over Jin yet? Don't know if anyone's in the boat of going all in with Hari but I'm curious what the gameplay is like for them.

So Emel has randomly decided to be annoyed at Oakley again (I'll replay for you next time Oakley 🥺) and it's clearly because the routes are merged now, which is such a shame because I do think Emel and Oakley could've worked it out and become a fun couple to watch on the real show (probably a boring one though that the audience would dump until after the show ended that their real personalities come out on social media and the public like them individually or at least understand why they were together so long). And I know it's not the most in character thing but I so appreciate it not being a complete 180 for the sake of plot because I'm trying to imagine this with all the couples given what I know about them from my playthrough and Emel/Oakley always have problems because she's uptight and wants more dramatics in their romance and he's chill so any little thing he ends up doing sets her off, sure, I can buy that Emel is a little delusional. Then Luna/Jin would have problems because Luna is less extroverted than Jin, serious, and irritable (which honestly, relatable) and so Jin does things for a laugh and she doesn't get it. So maybe he didn't wink at Bea or did it as a joke because he's being cheeky and she takes it as flirting and starts an argument. And from my playthrough, Sophie and Jack always feel like they're looking for an argument so that checks out too. It's not perfect, but I can feasibly see how one could justify this plot point.

pet peeve subjective raunchy races is back 😠 at least a couple of them are better, like they did have oldest boy in there at least. everything else though, I don't care that much to listen to them argue about who's the most well traveled or stylish.

I love Bea's personality, she's so fun. And tbh, I'm kind of liking her and Liam together. He's forward and she's into it, and it seems like he can keep up with her for now so I'm happy with that couple and I hope it doesn't turn to shit (it probably will).

also pay to win when losers are gonna throw a part anyway ok sure 🙄 I think I've mentioned this before but like personally I think if they're gonna do gem scenes, there has to be a logical ways out of it rather than just MC being like "nah I don't feel like it" and then they lose?? at least for other gem scenes it's like "tell Sophie off 10 gems" or "stay silent" like sure that's fine I guess.

anyway the chats with the boys were actually all pretty fun and short. I, as per usual, have immediately gravitated towards the foodie/chef character but I'll admit I see what y'all are saying about Kyle. Tbh even Max isn't too bad but I'm cautious bc I'm getting Eddie vibes (it's the blond and the gossip lol). And I like Liam, he's like a less cartoonishly silly Hamish (so he reminds me of Felix).

I really like the free party wear dress and this is the second volume in a row MC has accidentally matched with a boy not her partner lol

Bea first mentioning she was bi but not flirting, I just thought maybe they were setting her up to partner with Claudia/Theo depending on who you couple up with/if you're on one of their routes. But then oh the tension at the party when she's staring at MC saying she wants to turn heads and Claudia getting nervous??? loving that.

I don't know what it's like for the other boys but it seems like Shawn and Kyle are drama averse, which I think could be an interesting plot point for later coming back from casa of course, but I also don't know if I believe in fusebox's ability to incorporate that in the story. (once again, the day I write a fic and learn to code its all over for you fusebox)

I didn't pay for the Bea talking about Jin scene but I saw yall talk about Sienna and like I doubt it's going anywhere if it's behind a paywall? it's like the Brad and Christy stuff tbh like unless a bunch of dumped islanders are coming back at the end, I'm ignoring it.

anyway it truly is missing Jin hours again 😔

the way you write dialogue is so good, it seems so natural and accurate. especially with Pete and Patrick. could I maybe get some dialogue tips from you, just in general? it's something I struggle with. I always either make it too silly or quippy and I end up deleting it because it sounds stupid, or it's like every line is trying to be the most serious deep important thing on earth. idk where the balance is, it's hard for me but you do it so well.

Some of it is honestly just practice. Years and years and years of reading and then writing dialogue.

But some of it is finding your style of dialogue that works for you. I consider myself, chiefly, a writer of dialogue. I'm never going to be huge into descriptions. I can do them every once in a while, but they're not really my thing. And that's okay! I'm not upset about that! I lean into what feels natural to me. So, with dialogue, I think some of it is finding the dialogue style that feels like it works for you, that you're comfortable with, that doesn't feel like it's artificial. I look back now at stuff I wrote years ago and it feels like I was trying to copy other people, which is fine! But it took me a while to find my groove, to be okay with things like saying flat-out "he says" a bunch of times. A lot of writing advice will tell you not to use "said" more than twice a page or something like that and I decided I didn't like that advice, it didn't work for me. The characters are talking too rapid-fire for me to want you to worry overly much about what verb they're using to communication. I don't always use "says" but I don't freak out if I use it more often than someone else would have said to, because honestly it's only there to make sure you don't lose track of who's speaking where.

Also, I will sometimes try my dialogue out loud. Like, I'll write the scene by acting out the parts in the shower. This requires me to remember what I said, but as long as I've got the rough shape of it, I'm okay, and I think that exercise helps my dialogue feel more natural and back-and-forth. If you're worried about remembering it, you could maybe record yourself doing this.

You talk about striking the balance, and I was trying to think of advice for this, and I realized something: Sometimes my characters have extremely deep conversations. Those are usually the scenes I've planned for and I know are coming from a long way off. "There needs to be a huge declaration of love," or "they need to talk about this problem they're having." Those scenes are kind of like their own things, because they have a very specific goal of some deep communication that needs to happen. Those are very different from the connective tissue scenes that I write to get to those scenes. And, because I don't outline or heavily plan my fics, often I have no idea what's going to happen in any given scene. Like, I'll start writing a scene, like the scene I posted in the Christmas fic tonight, and all I need to happen in that scene is: Pete and Patrick pick out a Christmas tree. Now I could have just skipped that scene, like, what's really happening in that scene? Really not much of anything. But to me I don't skip those scenes because I think those scenes are the important scenes where you really get a feeling for the relationship between the characters, you get to see them interact. So, in THAT kind of scene, it's basically all quips and jokes. And when I run out of quips and jokes lol, then maybe there will be a serious moment of self-reflection in there.

Again, because I don't plan my fics out very much, oftentimes I just let the characters talk to each other until some kind of point emerges. This means I have to actively come up with things for them to talk about. Random things, not story point things. And, because of that, I think the dialogue naturally feels more spontaneous and unplanned and meandering, because that's how the scene is unfolding. So I guess I would say that the balance is struck by knowing what the scene needs to accomplish. If it's a light, frivolous scene, then I just let them go where they want to go. If it's an intense scene, I have more of an idea in mind, and so there's less brainstorming through the dialogue.

I have no idea if this is helpful!!!! Another thing I would recommend is to find a writer whose dialogue you really like and spend some time with it, thinking about what you like about it, why you like it, and how you could keep that in mind as you write. I tell this story a lot but the first piece of writing I ever saw by Aaron Sorkin was "The State Dinner," which is an episode of "The West Wing," and it, like, took the top of my head off, the way he was writing dialogue. I watched a lot of Aaron Sorkin throughout my twenties, anything and everything he did. (I still watch Sorkin's stuff, because I can't help it, he taught me a lot of what I know, and even though his style has become highly mockable, it was really formative for me.) Anyway, I used to spend a lot of time trying to think about what about his dialogue made me so impressed by it, and some of it was the speed, and some of it was how he wasn't afraid to make it repetitive and confusing and silly and pointless. I mean, it's not like real talking because nobody REALLY talks like an Aaron Sorkin character but it FELT like this approximation of reality that really appealed to me. I remember the first time I wrote a character say something like, "I don't want to turn into one of those couples who's all like, 'We can't do anything solo.'" My beta at the time circled it and was like, "This speech is too informal." Because way back when in the twentieth century, that was how we thought about dialogue, that it had to be this more formalized thing, cleaned up from how real-life speech is. Sorkin kind of taught me that it didn't have to be. (I'm sure other people could have. He happened to be who I found.) So I used to watch a lot of West Wing to get its rhythm in my head, and then I would write my own stories, and as I did that, I found I sounded more like Sorkin. That wasn't actually my goal, and I think I sound less like him now, twenty years down the line, but it WAS my goal to really hone in on my dialogue the way he had. It made me not afraid to tell a story mainly through its dialogue, where I had been before him. Idk. This turned into a whole Aaron Sorkin thing and I didn't mean it to be but it was a huge turning point in how I wrote and I think about it a lot hahahaha. ANYWAY. Yeah.

Haha thanks, it's okay though, I feel they told on themselves more than anything🤣. As for my favourite things about BB! Well...

I love that from the get-go Yang just seems to genuinely love making Blake laugh and smile - to the point it's even, very sweetly, referenced in the Manga anthology. I love the fact that Blake was introduced as this reserved character and after her initial hesitation, she smiles so much after becoming partners with Yang. Immediately after killing the Ursa, at the relics, watching Yang admire Ruby - and it's just so consistent throughout and grows until Blake's eventually laughing at Yang's dorky jokes. That always stood out to me, that Yang made her smile more than anyone.

I love the fact that Yang just believes in Blake so much, even so early on. We see it when Blake outs herself as a faunus - there's no doubts in Yang's mind whatsoever, she just wants her safe. We see it when Yang volunteers to help with the WF mission, she just volunteers to help, no questions asked, to support her (the 'I love it when you're feisty' and the look they share after this is one of my all time favourite moments). We see it again in Mountain Glenn when Yang tells her that she's 'not one to back down from a fight'. We see it again at the dance, when Yang was so confident in being able to get Blake to the dance, trusting that Blake would relate to her past and achieve her goals - and that's just some from volumes 1-3. Blake, when she arrived at Beacon, was a little broken from everything that happened to her, and I genuinely believe that she needed someone like Yang to bring that sunshine into her life and believe in her unconditionally. And she pays her back by believing in her after the fight with Mercury, trusting that she wasn't like Adam. But also, she needed someone who would restore that faith in humans too - as she referenced in the confession scene. Even if they technically speed-ran the whole 'enemies' part of enemies-to-friends/lovers, Blake was still wary of humans at the beginning of the series. I genuinely think Yang was a massive part of helping her overcome this.

I also love the way that Blake is with Yang. She started off so reserved, making herself quiet and small but just seems to find a strength in Yang. And, likewise, Blake seems to ground Yang and bring out a more serious side in her as well as the silly. It's just so balanced.

I love the symmetry in their partnership - whether it's the sun/moon, yin/yang, opposites vibe or even the way their semblances and fighting style are like two halves of a whole. We see their partner combinations so often throughout the show and they get increasingly more powerful and fluent as the two grow in confidence together. I love that for them. That their strength on the battlefield strengthens as they grow closer.

I even love the fact that they had that conflict and came out of it wanting to protect each other, because it wasn't a straight-forward path from friend to lovers. I loved all the things above so early on, and then you see a pattern when they're separated that they're clearly thinking of one another. The fact that they had something they needed to work through together made it feel all the more realistic to me, because it set it apart from other relationships in the show, there was angst and a build-up of tension. You can see the moment that they accept their feelings go deeper, that it's safe to explore them, and the gentle shifts in their relationship. I love the fact that they healed together, that Blake showed Yang that not everyone who leaves won't come back.

I shipped BB yeeears before I was involved in the fandom - so it's always amusing to me when Antis come at me with accusations that it's a sheep mentality. Like my dude, I was shipping this before I knew it was a thing. Back when I was at uni with roommate telling her that I genuinely thought something fruity was going on with the two of them. It has a special place for me, because I discovered it back when I was first realising I was bi, and BB had a similar dynamic to me and my best friend that I slowly fell in love with. You might want to comfort yourself by believing that people apparently only like the ship cos it's gay, but the truth is that this ship has so much to offer. I DEADASS DIDN'T EVEN GO INTO MY REASONS THAT STEM FROM VOLUMES 6 ONWARDS I COULD WRITE THIS FOREVER HAHAH.

i think andy is for the most part a bystander and content to let his friends/the ppl around him do their own thing even if he very much does not agree w them however i do believe he makes snide comments occasionally and not so subtle digs. i’m thinking of that uhhh iirc reading festival interview from 2014 where he said he was better than them bc he’s vegan straightedge. it was framed as a joke but i felt like he was also partially being serious lol

when it comes to discussion of pol w pete esp i feel like bc he’s been deradicalized i’ve gotten the impression that while they (pete and andy) likely hold the same basic ideals, if they were to get down into the weeds of their ideologies it would prob lead to arguments bc while they came up in the same bizarro scene (a largely traditionalist and conservative movement that also claimed to be antiracist and antifascist) pete has imo wholly moved on from that (for the better), and andy has moved further left while remaining militantly straightedge/vegan (again for the better).

i doubt either of them ever fully subscribed to the hardline movement, but maybe did in part, and also sean was just like…around and not a skinhead so they moved in the same circles. this is hard to quantify but i would say they’ve probably both moved further left and at the very least towards progressivism just bc of how fashy hardline was at its core. andy has kept far truer to anti-establishment ideals in personal ideology if not in his actions while pete uh ‘moved to the burbs / found god in a vote’

re the others well iirc patrick and joe were doing some common yt ‘not all cops are bad’ rhetoric on twt at one point re police brutality and if andy was abolition posting at them then they certainly never listened. ik patrick has moved further left since and maybe andy is partially to thank for that, who knows, but again while i’m sure he was never shy abt his ideals i doubt he tried to convert them. i’m sure he’s implied some stuff to their faces a time or two abt them not being straightedge tho 😭

My gosh we were SO CHEATED not getting to see what Prime did in Hordaks lab also the idea of him just leaving the vessel in the lab till Adora shows up got us thinking ab Anri (Primevessel oc) secretly wandering about Hordak’s lab trying to learn more ab Hordak while Prime is away

IKR?? And the lack of any reaction from Prime when he visited the Fright Zone was kinda dissapointing. Yes he saw Hordak's memories earlier, but it's not the same as to actually be there and see everything with your own eyes. I don't need him to be impressed or whatever, any kind of reaction would do - disgust, anger, cringe, amusement, some condescening commentary at least. Distress even lol (how was he not afraid of catching every disease there?)

I remember I had so many ideas for this "missing scene"

Either something silly:

Like what if Imp (who was actually hiding in Hordak's sanctum all that time) suprise attacks Prime and demands to know where his dad is, but before HP can do anything about it Adora and co arrive

Or during his monologue he'd stop himself to say something like "Look at this, just what he did to MY symbols, he desecrated everything! How could he ruin my aesthetic? I cannot believe that he made everyone on this planet call this JOKE the Evil Horde. What a disgrace!"

Or something more serious:

Like, while waiting for the heroes Horde Prime searches through Hordak's notes and logs. All the earlier notes are all about Hordak trying to return to the Galactic Horde, trying to "fix" himself for Prime, about Hordak missing his home and hating himself. But then he begins to think more and more about his life on Etheria, his changes in himself, about Imp and Entrapta, and less and less about Prime. Aghh it'd be so satisfying to watch that smug grin slowly fade from Prime's face

Or just a tiny quiet moment of Horde Prime staring at one of the tanks with failed clones. His expression strange and hard to read. Who knows what he might be thinking about

Anyway, oh! your ask got me thinking - what in fact happens to Prime's vessel when he jumps from body to body? Does HP still controls his main body somehow or it just goes limb like a rag doll? And does it become just an empty body or (like in your idea) the clone who was chosen to be Prime's vessel regains consciousness and takes control of the body again? And yeah, can that vessel then just get up and go about their secret vessel business? XD

Damn it's so interesting but also very, very dark. What is it like for these poor vessels to be trapped in their own body? Do they fall into something like a coma or hibernate, or they still can see, hear and feel everything, but can't move or speak? Absolutely terrifying

Ash and comfort

Looking at his character

Spoilers for JN117

Ok should start with this, this isn't a major thing just something I think builds on a common thing I've seen during journeys run

So in JN117 after Iris lost to Cynthia Ash checks on her and she lets out her emotions and starts crying with Ash comforting her with his presence and words

Overall the scene was good no complaints or critiques from me

But I did notice a thing online where people were commenting how awkward it was and that Ash should have hugged Iris or put his hand on her shoulder or something besides just “standing there”

And while a hug or something would have been nice

Ash doesn't do that lol

I really can't think of a time Ash voluntarily hugged one of the girls (or guys)

Like in some of the more emotional times with girls I can't think of a hug

Misty goodbye, he ran off

Misty goodbye Togetic he was just in the back with everyone else letting them have their moment

May lost first contest, no contact but had comments

May lost in the Grand festival I think at most it was a hand on shoulder but also had words

Dawn pit of her depression arc, didn't touch but tried to cheer her up

Dawn goodbye the high five/touch thing

Iris goodbye wasn't very emotional tbh but no contact

Serena, nothing she kissed him lol

Bonnie goodbye again no contact

Lillie goodbye no contact

Lana goodbye no contact

Mallow goodbye no contact

Not saying Ash has never physically touched his friends lol, like he has held hands, held them, etc, especially for anything action related where he goes into hero mode

Like one of the closest thing is that Goh scene that the shippers like lol

But for people to complain (not all some are just commenting) that Ash didn't hug her just sounds like stuff to complain about as it isn't an Ash thing

And this has been occurring a few times in Journeys, where Ash does something in character but it isn't the more interesting route the story/episode could take or what people think should happen

Yes Ash hugging Iris would of been like 10x more emotional and impactful, even in that scene in my head I was like she needs hug. But Ash doesn't hug lol and I'm fine with that.

Like recently in the masters 8 tournament, people wanted Ash to interact with the other masters 8 as it would be something new unique and etc but in Ash fashion he wants to see the battles in person and that meant watching in the stands with Goh and Hop

And yes the former option would be interesting especially with people like Alain and Iris there, and at this point Goh and now Hop still being unfamiliar gets old but it's still in character of Ash

And again there's been multiple instances like this, whether it's that people think Ash is too dumb in journeys like the looking for data joke, or how he interacts with certain characters doesn't feel right to them, etc

But to me even with the small changes Ash has had in his personality over the years (like he was way more sassy in OS and even AG than currently for example) Ash is still Ash

And I think it's just strange (not necessarily a problem) but people have a certain image of Ash in their head so when he doesn't do something they think he would do it gets these issues. And ties into a conversation about Ash I might save for a different post.

This also ties into the whole is XY Ash the outlier or SM Ash the outlier debate

And not wanting to get too into it but neither are outliers, but XY Ash sacrificed more of his silly side as he was more of the leader and mentor here plus the shonen attributes XY Ash had, not that he didn't have silly moments but everyone would agree Ash was more serious in comparison in XY than the other series. And in SM not really sacrificing the serious side but amplified the silly side of him in comparison to other series as well. And can do this with other series like his sass in OS, dumb moments in BW, and so on

Other factors as well as I could go into the whole Ash feels like a teenager in one series but a kid in another series debate and more

But overall I'm concluding that people have a certain idea of Ash in their head (me included) and it seems Journeys Ash isn't that picture to a lot which gives us this constant complaint on character decisions like how he should comfort Iris

KB: I don’t have PTSD. me: you literally do??? You know, paranoia sucks but sometimes it can be useful. I always try to sit facing so I can see the room or the door but that's mostly paranoia. I NEVER go through a door I don't know I can open again but this one is actually useful & important. I grew up post 9/11, there are school/mass shooting crises, so the airport would host active shooter training. Heck, I was at a religious event & we got a bomb threat! Yeah maybe some anti anxieties would help take the edge off until you deal with the trauma, then you can go off the meds once you've dealt with it. Very thankful for your posts about Tekken lore and such. I became a fan since T4/5 and I didn’t remember some things. Watching Bloodline certainly made me a bit confused due to some plot decisions but I'm glad you explained a few points. Do you think Jun will show up in T8? I think (or at least, HOPE lmao) that we see the Kazama side just like we saw the Mishimas storyline in T7. I also want more Xiaoyu, Asuka and Hwoarang but knowing Harada.. who knows. I remember the endings some characters got in T7 and I physically cringe 💀 like a few were so silly and.. unimportant. I just hope we have less of that in the next game.

And I am very thankful that you read 'em! 'cos sometimes I feel I just ramble like a madperson xD I dunno, I wanna say Bloodline would be good had it not made so many decisions that go against the series. Buuuut... honestly - as I've explained in posts before - even if it wasn't Tekken, it'd still be bad. It was still full of too many exposition scenes that just tells, not shows. Leaves no room for surprises. And it also has an issue with dragging some scenes out, whilst other, would've been interesting, scenes are rushed. (like most of the tournament.) Whilst I would never critique ppl for what they like - ppl can enjoy whatever as long as it's not harmful lol. But I still can't quite comprehend why ppl would enjoy Bloodline that much. It's not the best adaptation of the story, and even ignoring that it IS an adaptation and just viewing it as its own thing, it still does so many sins against story telling.

I do think Jun will show up in T8. There's a few reasons why I think this. Mainly because as I've been explaining in recent posts - the writers SPECIFICALLY mentioned she's not dead, but just "missing." I don't think they'd bother bringing this up if it's not gonna be used later on in the lore. Plus, many fans recently have been wanting her return. I also think she can really help with the Kazuya vs Jin issue - given that she's an important part of both lives.

I also made a post about the Kazamas playing a more important role in the story. (Here's the post if you're curious!) In Asuka's ending in T7, Lili SPECIFICALLY mentions that Asuka could be dragged into the Mishima mess due to her Kazama connections. This feels like it's hinting at Asuka, FINALLY, playing a bigger role. But I'd also take this with a gran of salt - because Eddy's T6 ending hinted at him being furious with Jin, and wanting revenge for his master dying after all. But then fast forward to T7 - that is completely forgotten, and instead Eddy becomes Lucky Chloe's bitch. It makes me soooo sad. Because while, yes, I'm relieved they dropped him being mad at Jin as T7 mentions he's just mad at Kazuya again. And I, too, want to forget T6 happened unless it's completely rewritten so it doesn't ruin Jin's character. But like... why do THAT to him? So I wouldn't be surprised if Asuka's potential is, again, forgotten.

Honestly, imo, Hwoarang, Xiao, and Asuka should've all played a bigger role. With Hwoarang and Xiao consistently being Jin's best friends - therefore, getting themselves involve in this mess. And Asuka having the power to repel the devil gene, finds herself useful as a weapon against DJ, and even Kaz. I had considered doing my own adaptations for the series - and which, I'd write Asuka usefulness being build up in T5, and then being extremely useful in T6. (since y'all know my blog - I state that it IS DJ who started the war, and went on with it - not Jin.)

But I believe I also critiqued that's one of the biggest issues with Tek so far. Is their humor. Whilst yes, I've always loved the Tek humor brand. I don't like it when my media is completely serious - I do like some jokes to lighten the mood. But back then, most of the jokes just came from obvious joke characters - such as the literal animals, or an old man who can barely move being a fighting character. But now they've gotten to the point where they'll turn ANY character who isn't directly a Mishima into a joke. It just gets old, and then in turn, gets unfunny. I really hope T8 has a more serious tone like T4 (which I'd say T4 was the most serious Tek game) and keep the jokes only to the more obvious characters - that being the animals, ofc. Let Eddy be serious again, let Paul be serious again, let Asuka be serious. Come on!

something i think would be Neat (it will not happen lol)

a s4 glaciator-esque marichat bonding scene that opens both of their eyes to what the other is going through. In glaciator, Marinette had no idea how hurt chat was about her rejections. She didn’t know he was serious. She thought it was all an act. and adrien had no idea that marinette was also feeling heartbroken. But their brief talk helped them understand each other better. Adrien was able to comfort his friend in a time of need, and Marinette saw chat’s soft side, a sincerity she’s never seen before, and from that point on she knew she had to be honest with him but also gentle with his feelings, which were very real.

Right now in season 4, Marinette also has no idea how hurt chat is feeling. She hasn’t seen his angry outbursts, his sad looks when her back is turned. She is buying his forced nonchalance. She’s relieved that he seems to be the same old silly kitty he’s always been. but he’s not. She had assumed he was acting in glaciator when he wasn’t, and now she assumes he is not acting when he actually is. She can’t really be blamed for this. She has a lot of problems to deal with, and he’s a good actor.

But imagine what could change in the ladynoir dynamic if there was another marichat “intervention”:

adrien, feeling ignored and useless and lonely, transforms one night to go out and clear his head. He sees marinette, who is just so stressed and tired and worried about everything that she came out on her balcony for some fresh night air to just sit and feel nothing for once. he stops by to say hi (post-weredad, it’s not quite as out-of-the-blue as it was the first time).

he notices she seems stressed. asks her about it. she keeps it vague but is as honest as she can be, and it feels good to share this burden with chat noir, at least a little bit, in a way she hasn’t done as ladybug because she’s trying so hard to keep it together.

chat noir is a good listener. he’s attentive. kind. understanding. but something is bothering him too. she prods a little and he confesses how lost he feels. like ladybug doesn’t need him anymore. how he feels so bitter and angry, and he hates that he feels that way because he knows she wouldn’t replace him or forget him but he just can’t help feeling like he’s being left behind yet again.

marinette is surprised. with how busy she’s been as ladybug, she hadn’t had much time to stop and think about how everything might be affecting chat noir. he didn’t seem hurt. but maybe he was too good at hiding it. maybe his smiles and jokes were a little too forced and she never noticed.

chat gets quiet. “sometimes I wonder if it’s even worth it anymore. the lies. the secrets. sometimes I wonder if she even needs me. If it would even make a difference to her if i was gone.”

she’s shocked. Hurt. “Of course it would.” She assures him that ladybug needs him and cares about him and values him. He offers a smile but it doesn’t quite reach his eyes. “We all need you,” she says finally. “Paris needs Chat Noir. And so do I.”

“Thanks for saying that,” he says softly.

“I’m not just saying it. I mean it.”

She pulls him into a hug. He’s stiff at first, surprised, but then he relaxes and hugs her back. It feels good to hold each other. It feels good to have someone who cares.

When they let go, he feels much better. He thanks marinette for listening and wishes her luck with the stressful things she mentioned. “If you ever need a helping paw, I’m here,” he says. She tells him to wait. Disappears into her room and comes back with a pastry wrapped in a napkin.

“You know, if you feed a stray, they’ll just keep coming back,” he jokes.

She smiles. “I know.”

She watches him leave, heart breaking out how defeated he had looked. She had never meant to push him away; she just had a lot going on. She thought his ignorance would protect him (she still has nightmares about blue eyes behind a white mask), but now she wonders if it would be better for him to know—not everything, but some things. As much as she could tell him. Like how she’d confessed her identity to Rena Rouge when she was at breaking point. How she’s given Rena a miraculous permanently. She figures she should finally tell him the identities of the other heroes—which hawkmoth knows, but chat still doesn’t.

Maybe knowing will help him feel trusted, she thinks. Maybe that will protect him more than anything else. (She hopes so. She won’t let chat blanc happen to him again.)

When adrien gets home, he has a message from ladybug. “I’m sorry I’ve been so distant lately. I owe you a chat. Paw-trol tomorrow, just you and me?”

He answers, and for the first time in a long time, he feels peaceful. He eats his marinette pastry, grateful for her kindness and warmth, and he thinks that maybe everything will be okay after all. They were still a team. It was still him and her against the world, as always. And ladybug and chat noir will always save the day, together.

JP vs. Localization in Fire Emblem Fates: Revelation

(Okay, for real this time lol)

Again, here’s a link to my sources post.

Fortunately, this route follows suit in terms of good localization quality after Conquest. It’s the shortest out of all the posts, since I don’t really have a lot to talk about. Mostly subtle line changes, references and a few key points of information that were cut out. I also went through Hidden Truths and Heirs of Fate to see if I could add stuff from those on here, but there were no big problems that I found.

Once again, the main part of this post will all be put under the cut. If a chapter isn’t covered, it means I didn’t think there were any differences worth talking about.

I’ll use localized names for characters and locations, unless I feel the need to do otherwise.

I’ll be using she/her when referring to Corrin in this post. (I flipped a coin to decide the gender lol)

Also, note that after Chapter 14, the translation of this route on Fateswartable ends, so I mostly relied on the English patch done by Serenes at that point forward. (I also used PegasusKnight.com as a reference to fall back on if I needed it)

Chapter 7

-A minor gripe I have with localization. The JP version compares Touma (Valla) to hell constantly. To jump ahead a bit, I believe in the JP versions of the End of All Sky/Land/Below tracks are even called The End of All Roads Heaven/Earth/Hell. The Vallites are also often called demons in the JP version, and Anankos himself is known as the ‘Invisible Demon Dragon’.

Another cool thing I just thought of too, is a connection to a popular Japanese short story. Zelda fans might be familiar with the story, “The Spider’s Thread”, which inspired the Ancient Cistern dungeon in Skyward Sword.

The beginning of the story has Buddha walking through paradise (heaven), before coming across a pond. The pond is filled with crystal clear water, and covered with water lilies/lotuses. As Buddha gazes further into the pond, he begins to see the depths of hell.

Sound familiar? “Azura is walking through Hoshido, before coming across a lake. The lake is filled with crystal clear water, and when she gazes into the lake she sees the fallen kingdom of her birth. Valla, the kingdom associated with water lilies/lotuses in the game, has been turned into hell itself.”

This association loses its meaning a bit when the comparisons to hell are a bit toned down, as well as when the Buddhist inspirations were kind of supplanted in favor of Greek renames. It’s not supremely important to the plot as a whole, but it’s something interesting I wanted to bring up.

-In the JP version, while explaining what happened in Valla, Azura eventually says “Using the art of manipulating people’s souls, he (Hydra/Anankos) made the people kill each other.” This bit of the people killing each other was cut in localization.

Chapter 12

-In the JP version, when Corrin asks Flora if she knows anything about dragons, Flora says “Sorry, I don’t know…The ancestral dragon of the Ice Clan has already perished and isn’t part of the legend. I don’t know what role it plays, sorry…” Localization makes her response “I'm sorry, but I can't think of anything... They've been gone so long that we don't even have tales of dragons in the Ice Tribe. I'm sorry I couldn't be of more assistance...”

So, the JP version explicitly says the Ice Dragon is dead (I believe Fates’ second artbook mentioned this as well), whereas the localization only says the First Dragons have been gone for a long time.

Chapter 16

-There’s not really much of a problem that I have with what Ryoma says about Corrin “having leadership qualities at a young age” but I wanted to do comparisons regardless cuz the word choice might lead one to different conclusions. In localization, Ryoma says this:

Ryoma: Huh... So she told us the same thing... I don't think it's in Corrin's nature to lie. And there's a leadership quality about her that just attracts followers. I remember being jealous of her as a child, in fact. Even at such a young age, she displayed the characteristics of a ruler. Silly to be jealous of her, right?

In the JP version, Ryoma says this:

Ryoma: Oh... So, she told you the same thing. …Corrin isn’t one to tell lies. She’s been like that since childhood. She’s always genuine and honest... She has this mysterious appeal that draws people to her. Seeing my younger sister with the qualities of being a ruler... Honestly, it makes me feel envious. …What a ridiculous thing to say, right?

Again, I don’t necessarily have a problem with how it was localized, but some might. The localization version might have people think that Corrin somehow was a fantastic leader at such a young age, but JP is more clear that it was about the qualities she had at a young age that would be valuable as a leader.

Chapter 19

-A minor gripe. In the localization, Azura says that Anankos uses his magic to send Vallites to Nohr and Hoshido to stir up conflict. In the JP version, she says he uses magic, along with the help of a body of water. That’s why whenever you fight Vallites outside of Valla proper, there’s a body of water nearby; Hoshido’s lake (and the ponds shown in Hinoka’s CQ battle which are in the capital) for Chapter 5, the sea for BR chapter 11, the burning falls for BR chapter 21, and the city for Rev chapter 13. Similarly, the consequences of being a victim to the curse are described as “turning into sea foam” in the JP version. Localization as a whole kind of toned down how much water has an influence on the story.

Chapter 23

-Probably the pettiest gripe I have lol. As Arete is fading away from Azura’s arms, Azura has a different reaction in localization and Japanese. In localization, Azura says “Mother? Mother!” while a voice clip of her in-battle pain cries plays. In the JP, she says “*Sob... Sob*…! Mother... Mother...!”, while a voice clip of her crying plays. Her crying voice clip I don’t recall hearing anywhere else.

This is one of the few times in the you get to see Azura express a heavy and heartfelt emotion, since her rough childhood caused her to remain guarded and stoic around everyone. The equivalents to this scene in other routes is her death scene in Birthright, and her crying with Corrin over Ryoma’s death in Conquest; a normally unflinching and aloof character breaking down is a rarity, and indicates that the cause of it is something to take note of for the character as a whole. Localization softened this aspect, and I take issue with it, despite it probably seeming trivial to most other people.

Chapter 24

-When Corrin is questioning the phantom Mikoto, an exchange happens. In localization, part of it goes like this:

Corrin: But this can't be... Are you truly my mother?

Mikoto: I am. Even as a puppet of Anankos, my spirit at least remains my own.

Corrin: I... I believe you.

In the JP version, it goes like this:

Corrin: It can’t be... …Are you really my mother?

Mikoto: Yes... I became an Invisible servant, controlled by the Invisible King... Even so, I am your mother.

Corrin: …………

Again, a minor thing that I don’t personally have issue with, but replacing Corrin’s silence with an admittance of belief could make some believe she has “reverted” back to being too naïve.

Chapter 26

-While Gunter is relaying his past, an exchange happens. In localization, it goes like this:

Gunter: I ask myself that, every day. I cannot understand the minds of royals. To you all, we commoners are little more than pawns in your schemes... Or weeds to be killed on a whim.

Corrin: That's not true...

Xander: Is that how people view the royalty?

Ryoma: Such an impression would easily breed powerful resentment...

In the JP version, Corrin, Xander and Ryoma don’t say anything. They just remain silent.

Endgame

-Not a major problem so much as a general thing about the game, but I can think of like... at least three memes that Treehouse inserted into the localization. Now I like memes, but there is no better way to date your media nowadays. One of them was Kana’s “That’s dragon for I love you” which tbh, is kind of cute and isn’t the most well known meme so I guess I can let it slide. Another is Felicia saying “I had one job!” when she messes up in the dining hall, which isn’t that big of a deal since the dining hall is very optional.

The last one I can think of is why I put this specific grievance here, and it’s during Corrin’s speech before facing Anankos.

Corrin: We won't back down! This is my... This is our destiny! Ready your weapons! Fight for your friends! With the Seal of Flames... With the Fire Emblem on our side! We fight for our world!!

Yeah, she says “Fight for your friends” which is everyone’s favorite Ike line from Brawl. Now, this isn’t even a totally inaccurate translation either, but it kind of just... makes the moment funny for the player when it’s supposed to be commanding and serious I guess.

But yeah, not the most important issue by far, but something I’d thought to mention. Hell, it’s not even that bad compared to how they made Peri’s, Effie’s and Hisame’s quirks into exaggerated and tired jokes. And the Beruka-Saizo support. Never forget.

-When Azura and Corrin are by the lake and discuss the latter’s plans to rule, Corrin says this in localization:

Corrin: I'm going to make Valla a wonderful place! In honor of the true last king and for Queen Arete. And everyone who fought... I promise to make them all proud.

In the JP version, she says this:

Corrin: I’ll make the Invisible Kingdom (Valla) into a great land. For the previous monarch, Queen Shenmei (Arete)… And for all of my allies who fought beside me. I promise.

So, JP version only mentions Arete as the reigning monarch of Valla. Which makes sense, cuz unless there was some wild “keeping the bloodline pure” shenanigans in Valla, Arete being the Queen keeps in line with what we know about the rest of Valla’s history. Arete was royalty from birth, as was her sister Mikoto. Arete is the one who passed down Lost in Thoughts and the pendant to Azura.

I HIT UNFOLLOW BY ACCIDENT WHEN I MEANT TO HIT ASK IM SO SORRY but either way! what drew you to rping barry all the way back in 2013? what's kept his muse so strong, despite approaching nearly 10 years? were there points where you didn't play him at all, or has he always been consistent?

[ FIRST OF ALL, no worries!! I SUPPOSE I can find it in my heart to forgive you...thanks for such an awesome ask!!

When I was looking for new creative writing outlets back in 2012-2013, I stumbled across what was then a very small Pokemon RP group on Tumblr. I joined up with an elderly Gambler Trainer OC and immediately took a liking to the scene. The group was full of insanely talented writers, artists, and creators--some of whom I still talk to today!--and I noticed that nearly all of them played conflicted or super serious characters (there’s nothing wrong with that btw!) What this group could use, I remember thinking, is a character who’s an blindingly bright ray of sunshine. And so, enter this blog right here. Enter Barry.

When I first started playing Barry back then, he was a total clown and an absolute meme, not meant to be taken seriously at all. My main goal with him was to farm Laughs. I was perfectly fine making him the butt of every joke, or injecting him into the most ridiculous AUs. No seriousness was allowed.

However, over time, I got inspired by my group to write serious hcs, explore Barry’s conflicts more, and create a more multifaceted image of the character. I still love writing Barry’s sheer amount of positive energy and bright-eyed enthusiasm, but I think I’m also careful not to let him devolve into just a “gotta run fast gonna fine you meme man” or some clown caricature of a portrayal (even if I sometimes gleefully toe that line.) I know that there are people in the fandom who think my boy’s too annoying, too hyper--but I like to think that I’ve developed Barry beyond those stereotypes, and he’s still growing in unexpected ways (PLA verse hello!!) thanks to many great people in the indie space. I can’t wait to see where he goes next, ‘cause I’m not planning on stopping. :)

I’ve kept Barry around for so long because writing him honestly has proven to be a great stress reliever for me. Like Barry, I’ve always set my mind on one goal after the next--breaks be damned--and, as a result, my life has changed so much over these past ten years (no crap, lol.) I’ve always loved writing, but my first job was at a newspaper, where my writing was regularly axed with red pen. I worked at PR agency, where I felt like I was creating supremely fake content, not my own words. During my master’s, my final project was revised over and over again by others before it was approved. Even today, my job requires a lot of “business speak,” so I have to constantly monitor my language. When I RP, I have full control of what I want to say and create. When I write Barry, I can write silly, heartfelt, unfiltered things and just express myself without someone always looking over my shoulder for once! Ironically, writing Barry (+others) helps me relax (while also still serving as a really fun creative outlet/escape!)

I took a small break from this site from 10/2019 to 05/2020 because of said IRL stuff and adjusting to That One World Event, but I’m so glad I took the leap back into this scene. As overwhelming as the indie space can be sometimes, I’m grateful for the people I’ve met here/have interacted with so far! So, even as I continue to pump out novels for posts, I hope people are still enjoying Barry too. We’re gonna keep shining a light around here. :) ]

1. Alex comes out to Reggie FIRST-- ok this fic I've talked about a lot because it has been Fighting Me Forever. Recently, however, I realized it was trying to do too many things at once and cut it down so hopefully I'll be able to finish it relatively soon. Snippet under the cut.

16. bobby musical angst mwahahahaha-- prompt from the lovely @starlight-17011-a: The boys watch the musical Rent. Either they go to haunt Bobby and see him and Carrie watching it or the whole group is doing a family movie night. Bobby gets sad when certain songs or lines are sung. I don't have a lot more thoughts about this yet but. It will be sad :)

27. My Name Is Luke/Bobby Post-Orpheum-- THE OFFICIAL ALL TOO WELL SEQUEL FIC. I’ve had plans for this for literally ever but I can’t write it until I finish a bunch of other fics in this series. I forget how much I’ve told you about this before but basically. Present-tense 2020 scenes involving Luke reuniting with Trevor after he finds out the version of My Name Is Luke he recorded is made up of a bunch of really gay drafts Luke wrote and hid in the studio. Past-tense 95 scenes of BobbyRayRose ANGST. Julie being awkwardly like “heyyy uncle trevor... here’s your exboyfriend, he’s in my ghost band. now.... talk!” etc. It’ll be Long.

Alex comes out to Reggie snippet:

“This is the life, man,” Reggie says, grinning, his face and shirtfront splattered with rum raisin ice cream. “We should do this more often.”

Alex smiles, stirring his melting cup of lemon sorbet into yellow soup. He doesn’t actually like lemon very much, but the ice cream shop was out of raspberry, and Alex didn’t bring his Lactaid pills so he can’t gorge himself on mint chocolate chip ice cream like he wanted to. “We can’t bring Luke, though. Can you imagine him on this much sugar? He’d never sit down.”

Reggie laughs, throwing his head back and kicking his feet out through the air, and Alex gives him a little side-eyed glance, thinking maybe Reggie doesn’t need any extra sugar either.

It’s a good day. Sunny, and not too cold for February, even in L.A., and Alex can hear the Nutcracker music from Sara’s class filtering through the dance studio windows, and he’s comfortable, even if he is wearing a too-small hand-me-down suit from his older brother Ben, and his tie is a little too tight, and he’s got anxiety thrumming underneath his skin, making his hands twitch and his stomach hurt because he’s got secrets like a blood clot threatening to stop his heart.

But he always has secrets these days, from everyone but himself, and he likes Reggie, even if they don’t spend a whole lot of time together without Luke there to act as an over-enthusiastic buffer. He likes that Reggie knows when to joke and when to be serious, that he means everything he says even if what he says is a little silly, that he’s quick to love, slow to judge, and treats Alex’s anxiety as an emotion to curb and not a problem to fix.

Reggie is one of Alex’s best friends, just as much as Luke is. Alex likes Reggie, loves Reggie even (though he is very much decidedly not in love with Reggie), and he trusts Reggie—or at the very least he wants to.

But none of that changes the fact that Alex doesn’t know what possesses him to say, “Reg, I think I have a crush on Luke.”

Lukebobby sickfic chapter 7 snippet:

Luke blinks, taken aback by Bobby’s sudden intensity, by the tears brimming in his eyes. “Bobby—” he tries, but words quickly fail him.

Bobby shakes his head and rubs a hand down his face, settling it back into an emotionless mask. “Forget it,” he mutters, backing away from Luke’s bed. “I’m sorry, I shouldn’t—you need to rest, I—I should tell the guys you’re awake.”

“The guys are here?” Luke pushes himself up against his pillows, even as his ribs protest.

Bobby checks his watch. “They should be back any minute, they drove back to the studio to get you some new clothes.”

“Who drove? Alex only has his learner’s permit.”

Bobby waves a hand nonchalantly, still backing toward the door. “Yeah, but he already stole Reggie’s dad’s car to get to my place, so they figured neither of them could get grounded twice. It was a—it was a weird night, okay? I’m just gonna go get your doctor. Lie back down.”

Hanasaki Private Academy- They got robot baby dolls

St. Flora Middle School- They got Eggs. Each of the eggs have the St. Flora logo printed on it to prevent students from

Ouka High School- Got bags of flour to be made into a baby,just random bags of flour.

SPRING TROUPE-

Masumi is doing pretty well with the baby, she doesn’t cry much.(That’s because you have your headphones in. dumbass.) He gets a full nights sleep too. (That’s because Tsuzuru is usually up and takes care of her out of habit.)Tries to get the director to marry him this way. “Please. I’m a single father. My daughter needs a strong role model.” “Her name is Izuumi. Get it? It’s our names put together.” He and Sakuya talk about their children like their real.

Sakuya is baby and now he has a baby too. His child’s name is Romeo, he couldn’t think of anything else. He has a realistic experience with the baby, late night feeding, baby crying during rehearsal, and struggling to budget with a new member. Grows attached to the baby fast, his own little baby, his family. Doesn’t want to seem rude but gets nervous when other members of Mankai holds his baby. “O-okay but take his burp cloth! and make sure his neck is supported. A-and!....” “Sakuya I’ve got like 12 younger brothers.” He cried when the assignment was over.

Itaru “Can we get an ‘F’ in the chat?” He remembers having one of those robot babies,their annoying and cut into his free time. Apparently you can use a strong magnet to mess up the sensors and get an easy A. Haphazardly holds the babies to play video games, He’s never been asked to hold the babies since.

“Sakuya...Masumi...” Tsuzuru worries about him getting too attached to the baby and Masumi using the baby to flirt with the director. Gave both of them some old baby clothes so they wouldn't have to buy any.

Citron loves the new members of the Spring troupe! He gives... interesting advice. “Do not worry! I’ve helped over a thousand woman and a thousand elephants give birth!” :D

SUMMER TROUPE-

Yuki made cute little clothes for his egg and carries it in an equally cute basket. He was actually excited for this project so he could practice making children clothes but unfortunately St. Flora gave them eggs instead of the dolls. His child is named Omelette, because that’s what’s their gonna be after the project is over. While creating a budget as part of the care assignment spent over $400 of clothing.

Muku keeps forgetting his egg everywhere he goes, he’s doing his best. His egg has a little crown on top of their head. The eggs name is Endymion, he’s gonna grow up to be the best prince ever. A some point he forgot where his egg was and accidentally knocked it off his desk. It broke. Muku cried, the Summer troupe held a funeral and the egg prince is buried in the Mankai courtyard. He didn’t fail since he completed all the budgeting, and other sidework that came with the project but lost a good chunk of points.

Tenma is adjusting. “Why can’t I just hire a nanny? It’s in my budget.” “Well what are the chances you’ll actually become a famous actor?” “???....?!...?!?......” Anyway he hates having to carry this stupid bag of flour, the paparazzi is gonna have a field day with this. Named his child Tenma Jr. and he’s also gonna become an actor. Tenma practically spent all of his budget on luxury items, designer clothes, foreigner cars, and a million dollar house. Forgets about utilities, “What the hell is rent???” Not adjusting well. Doesn’t help that Yuki calls his child, Hack Jr.

Kazunari- LOL! He remembers having to do that when he was still in grade school. He ‘Babysits’ while the younger actors are working or doing a scene. He’s the best uncle ever! #Blessed💖💖💖💖 Offered to redraw the ST. Flora logo onto a store bought egg when Muku’s broke, but Muku’s an honest prince, so he and Yuki decorated a coffin for the funeral.

“Poor Muku, You’re egg broke but it became a bunch of mini triangles!” Misumi didn’t help much.

AUTUMN TROUPE-

Surprising or not, Sakyo is the most serious about the assignment. “Children are expensive and time consuming.” Whether It’s a bag of flour or a robot doll, Sakyo makes the students of Autumn troupe take proper care of the children.He helps the students that need to make budget though.

“Hyodo if you don’t get get you child off the damn floor i’m calling your school and reporting you for Negligence.”

“I don’t know Nanao, are you gonna pay me to watch your child?”

“SETTSU!??! YOU CANNOT TAKE YOUR CHILD APART!”

Worst Grandpa ever

Omi is a little more helpful, but he agrees with Sakyo that this is an important assignment. While in school he totally bombed the assignment, but as an ex- delinquent he’s seen a few people start families waaaayy too young, It’s very stressful. Doesn’t want that for any of the Autumn Troupe. He’s willing to hold onto to the babies free of charge. Nice Grandma, probably gonna turn her grandkids into dinner

Taichi is already on thin ice with his school, he turned his flour baby into a monster child,(Ya know the little monster character he’s always drawing)

“Haven’t you seen Alien?!?!?”

Now he has the struggles of raising an alien child as a single father in highschool. “His name is Zognoid XJ-9″

It was fun at first for Banri, a new challenge approaches, but now the Baby is cutting in on his gaming time and what ever else it is he does. It hard to be a tough guy when your carrying a doll around. Considered taking out the batteries, but if Sakyo found out he’d fail the project. His baby is named Majima.

Juza was kind of excited for the project, maybe it would make him seem less intimidating, but no, it seems he’s gotten into more fights due to this sack of flour than before. No matter he’ll project this baby with his life, he calls her pudding. All was well until fuckin’ Settsu started calling his daughter a ‘cocaine baby’ Juza threw a few insults back and Banri punched him...in the baby. Flour went everywhere. Juza saw red. He grabbed Banri’s babydoll and though him outside into the street. People saw. Thought it was a real baby. The police were called. Sakyo had to call in A LOT of favors and explain it was just a doll. Both him and Settsu nearly failed and got chewed out by Sayko for almost ruining the companies image.

They had separate funerals, once again buried in the Mankai court yard

BONUS! WINTER TROUPE-

Tsumugi thinks its great the kids are learning responsibility and that childcare is no joke. Brought flowers to the funerals.

“Oh! THE WOAHS OF CHILDREN, BUT THE LOVE OF A LITTLE JOY YOU TAKEN INTO TO YOUR SOUL.” Homare find this amusing and inspirational. He remembers his egg project and how- blahblahblah. Gave nice loooooong eulogies during all the funerals.

Azuma thinks it’s funny, he’s old so he never had to experience the baby project. Although the sight of seeing these new families makes him a little sad. Better drink some sake.

an ode to maara/bommi

[soorarai pottru spoilers]

so i’ve watched it and i LOOOVE it, easily in my top elite list of fav suriya films. there’re many things i love about it; maara’s persona and characterisation, his relationships with the people around him, the suffocating elitist atmosphere of the film, the music, visuals,

but my mind keeps coming back to this specific relationship and it’s my fav aspect of the movie. one that i’m not alone in echoing cos i’ve seen maaany people say likewise. i’d like to gush about them.

maara and bommi were just.. SOOO GOOD together???? i have a very small list of suriya romances i actually care about onscreen and this easily skyrocketed up. cos most of the time, it’s either i really like the heroine but the romance in the film isn’t that great/gets little scope (e.g. ngk, where i like sai pallavi but come on their marriage was trash cos ngk is a trash cheating and manipulative fuckboi, or anushka in singam, which is fine i guess but the third film soured me on all the characters), or it’s a case of me really loving the romance itself but i’m not having loads of feelings about whoever is paired up with him (e.g. ayutha ezhuthu, which is an all time favourite suriya romance highlight on screen and it was fantastic, but esha deol’s character was not at all a standout character on her own even if i enjoyed watching them together).

so there’re many a times the problem for me where either the romance doesn’t work, or the woman opposite him is not fleshed out enough. in comes soorarai pottru and i was DELIGHTED with their individual characterisations and their relationship dynamic cos finally here u have a romance depicted on screen where they’re both essentially treated as equals by the narrative even if the story is naturally centred on maara completely because the film is about him.

bommi is her own person and it’s established immediately the moment they meet, which is the exact reason why maara falls for her in the first place despite her roasting him all the time and after that too. she stands on her own, doesn’t need ~a man~ to help elevate her or achieve what she sets out to do. and she does all this without the help of the protagonist. her character is not dependent on maara in the slightest. she’s easily more successful than maara for the entire film until the end, and her personality isn’t overshadowed by her husband cos she pretty much has her own shit to run and holds her own opposite him. even when maara initially gets his dream off the ground, bommi isn’t relegated to a lower bar within the context of the film where her only role is to support him, but she works at expanding her own business/franchise and meets maara as a respectable equal in his venture as a food vendor, which even maara is surprised by but pleased about. she outright meets him in their shared field of interests and expertise, and maara never once treats her any less or jokes about her proposal.

and of course whenever they came together..... i gotta say, it was pretty hot lol. their emotional scenes had A LOT of weight. their physical scenes were certainly sexy and hot i could def watch them kick it up a notch. i don’t really find suriya has much chemistry with many of the heroines he’s paired up with but somehow he seemed comfortable with aparna enough to do loads of sexy staring, gazing, looking sexual, etc, and actually looked good playing a character who was not just in love with his wife, but who also was physically attracted to her, which is what completely sells the relationship and makes it look organic on screen. it helped that the visuals/lyrics depict him as more submissive in their love too (i thought both veyyon silli and kaattu payale had pretty obvious more sub vibes on behalf of the man, or the more serious bit where he comes back home exhausted and seeks comfort), it really works very well. i adored their scenes and it always works for me when suriya plays more subby characters in his romance because....... because. interests. *coughs* he is Good Boi (tm). he is Sub (tm). plus the physicality of maara/bommi shown is not only sexual, but they had softer moments too which made it all the more endearing. more than once, maara hugs her for solace or when he’s distressed and it’s very sweet and gentle, or the little quick scenes where he puts his hand on bommi’s head. those were all very cute moments and stays with u even though it’s short. it was a lovely sight to see in films where your usual hero/heroine barely even touch each other, or when they do, have no vibes or connect at all, while the physicality here is both sexual and also paired with emotional influence.

the only thing i really had an issue with is the lack of a proper resolution or dialogue after their big fight. i know some people have pointed out the fight itself was not something they liked because he hit her, but i didn’t have an problem with that tbh. it was a natural progression of maara’s character as he was steadily failing repeatedly, getting steadily angrier as he struggled to control it, and thinking she called him a loser was the snap. it worked quite well imo because the narrative also establishes pretty fast he regrets what he did and he immediately goes to look for her, finds her gone, and spends the next how many hours searching everywhere while looking very upset. so i don’t view it as a glorification or justification of his action since we are shown he knows he fucked up. but that being said, it was never mouthed explicitly. i felt their reunion was too quick and too easy and i would’ve liked an explicit line from bommi calling him out on that, and maara explicitly apologising for it and saying openly he messed up big time with her. that was the only part about the relationship i was disappointed by and i wish it was worked in better cos i don’t require a whole conversation or exposition dump, but even a few extra lines would have been nice in the scene he finds her again and runs to once again seek wordless comfort and apology.

>>> ETA: HE DOES NOT HIT HER. i’m adding this lil para here cos i’m uncomf with how many notes this post got spreading this misinfo i wrote myself which i’m wrong about. my first watch i did not catch it and thought nothing of it, but then i saw people saying he did and was talking about it and when i rewatched it, i agreed. but now, after multiple watches, i want to note i’m back to my initial instinct, which is that he doesn’t. maara pushes her by her chin/throat, and he then smacks the plate of food bommi has hard. it’s obvious when u pay attention to the speed and angle the plate flies off to the left, as well as the sound of the metal clang. the only explanation is maara slapping that away and not bommi flinging it. i do urge people to not continue spreading it without fact checking at least, considering sudha in an interview herself had a convo with someone and she agreed with the use of the word ‘’restrained’’ in how maara reacted during the fight, which wouldn’t make sense if he outright slapped her. this also makes it in character for bommi, who doesn’t seem to be the type of person in the narrative who would have just taken that with no fall out after.

SO YEAH despite this one thing, i really, reeeeally loved this relationship and romance and individual characterisations that had their own journey and arc but also were tied down to the same path that they don’t drift away within the frame of their movie and their own goals. this was a married couple shown right with individual personalities and ambitions, and not a woman who was fused to the hero of the movie and only there to meet the commercial requirement of a love track in a film. plus of course uhhh they were really hot together. i’ve mentioned that, right.
