‘Prison walls can fall,’ Lief said softly. ‘Gardens can become forests. Del can be beautiful once more. And as for what you can offer, Jasmine...’ For a moment, his voice failed him. This was so important. He had to chooose his words carefully.

Looking at Jasmine’s closed face, an immense feeling of loneliness swept over him. He wished with all his heart that the easy companionship they had once shared would return. But he knew that while he had to guard his tongue and his thoughts, this could not be.

Jasmine did not raise her head. But Lief could see that she ahd heard. he prayed that she had also understood.

Waiting for Lief in Del was his bride-to-be [...]. But Jasmine was here with Lief now. And she was his friend — his true friend.

Lief’s heart thudded violently. The Shadow Lord had been waiting for Jasmine. He had been expecting her. It was news of her that had caused this haste.

The suspicion Lief had been fighting ever since they arrived in the Shadowlands reared it head once more...

'... it is a shame to me that I ever doubted you, Lief,’ Jasmine repeated awkwardly.

'When the time comes,’ Lief said, determinedly drowning her out, ‘I will follow Adin’s example, and marry for love.’ He glanced at her. ‘If the woman I love will have me, of course.’

‘She probably will,’ said Jasmine. ‘When the time comes.’

DELTORA QUEST 2 The Shadowlands Ch 17 Secrets ___

But he would rather Jasmine had remained in the west, in Tora, where she would be safe.

He shook his head. How could he have thought Jasmine would agree to that?

‘I must have been mad,’ he said aloud.

DELTORA QUEST 3 Dragon’s Nest Ch 3 The Full Moon meeting ___

'Jasmine! Stay — back,’ Lief gasped, as the men behind him pressed forward, groaning under the weight of their terrible burden. But either he spoke too softly for Jasmine to hear, or she chose not to listen. She darted towards him. In another moment her arm was around his waist, and she was half-supporting him as they moved through the gateway.

DELTORA QUEST 3 Dragon’s Nest Ch 4 Act of Faith ___

The bird lifted its beak from the watyer and raised it over Jasmine’s body. One downward jerk of its head, and the dripping, razor sharp point would plunge deep into Jasmine’s heart.

With a strangled cry Lief heaved himself onto his side, picked up the skull again and threw it wildly.

DELTORA QUEST 3 Dragon’s Nest Ch 13 Sweet and Sour ___

We cannot trust smiling faces or loyal words. Even here in Broome...

He felt a small, strong hand grip his own. He lifted his head and met Jasmine’s bright eyes.

‘I doubt we have an enemy in Broome, but we will take no risks,’ she said, as though she had read his mind.

DELTORA QUEST 3 Shadowgate Ch 1 Warning ___

'Jasmine!’ Lief croaked.

Jasmine’s eyes flew open in fright and widened even further when she saw Lief sitting up and looking at her.

‘Lief?’ she murmured uncertainly, scrambling to her knees. ‘Are you — all right? [...] Do you not remember what happened last night? What — what I did?’

DELTORA QUEST 3 Shadowgate Ch 10 The Bees ___

Steven glanced at [Lief], then back at Jasmine.

‘Cheer up, girl!’ he said to her loudly, raising his bushy eyebrows. ‘Your long face is worrying Lief half to death!’

'I did not read them all,’ murmured Jasmine, flushing a little. She still felt awkward because she read so slowly.

‘You may not read fast, Jasmine, but you observe without even trying,’ said Lief. ‘That will be you part — and the most important one, if I am right.’

DELTORA QUEST 3 Shadowgate Ch 11 The Trail ___

We have no plan, Lief thought. We are walking into the web of this sorcerer with nothing but our wits and the Belt of Deltora to aid us.

He glanced at Jasmien, and she smiled. So be it, he thought, and straightened his shoulders.

DELTORA QUEST 3 Shadowgate Ch 16 Shadowgate ___

'Go,’ Jasmine shouted. ‘Lief, you must!’

But Lief could not leave her. And when she saw that, Jasmine lifted her hands and let herself fall back, disappearing into the mass of rock as if it were quicksand.

Lief gave a cry of anguish. Below him the groaning rock bulged and surged upward. He heard the hissing laughter of The Masked One.

A white rage such as he had never felt before boiled up within him. He flung himself back to face the stairs, looked up at the light, and climbed.

He no longer felt pain in his legs or hands or face. He no longer felt fear. He felt only that white-hot anger. It was as if it had burned everything else away. As if all that remained within him now was the will to destroy.

‘We both saw you fall,’ Barda panted. ‘Jasmine could do nothing, because she cannot swim. She is still up there somewhere, with the Kin. Worried out of her life, no doubt.’

He did not want to think about what might be happening to Jasmine. Jasmine, who could not swim. Jasmine, pitching dangerously over the raging sea in the pouch of the smallest and most fearful of the Kin.

He saw Barda eyeing him, and wondered if his companion guessed the reason for his anger.

DELTORA QUEST 3 Isle of the Dead Ch 7 Fool’s Gold ___

'You have found Ava,’ the figure whispered. ‘Wht is your wish?’

Lief took a breath, but could not speak.

‘A love potion?’ Ava murmurmed. ‘No. I can see there is no need for that...’

DELTORA QUEST 3 Isle of the Dead Ch 14 Ava ___

Lief began to run. In horror he saw Jasmine reach Ava and catch at her arm. He saw Ava swing around. He saw the glint of steel.

And in seconds Jasmine was off the ground, a bony arm around her neck, the point of a knife pressed to her throat.

The movement had been all too familiar. With sick terror Lief saw the feather hood fall back. [...] Laughing Jack.

DELTORA QUEST 3 Isle of the Dead Ch 19 Vows ___

Lief’s heart began to pound. He strode to Jasmine and she reached out for him blindly, clutching the front of his jacket.

‘I went to the bird room,’ she said in a small, tight voice. ‘The guards were gone. And the birds... all the birds —’

‘Dead?’ Lief exclaimed.

‘Dead or — or dying,’ Jasmine whispered. ‘Lief, you must come. You must help me. If they cannot be cured, they must be put out of their misery. They — they are suffering.’

‘Stay with Paff!’ Lief called over his shoulder to Gla-Thon. And putting his arm around Jasmine, he hurried with her out of the room.

'Go and bid [Kree] farewell, Jasmine,’ Lief said gently. ‘I will not leave the birds until you return.’

It came to [Lief] that his family was cursed — cursed by the wonder that was the Belt of Deltora. [...] And suddenly Lief was almost glad that now he would never marry Jasmine, that they would never have a child to wear the Belt in his place.

Jasmine held his gaze for a moment. Then she nodded and took his hand. ‘Filli is with Barda,’ she said.

And Lief understood that this meant she intended to stay with him — indeed, that she had always thought it would come to this.

We fight together or not at all.

He gripped Jasmine’s hand more tightly. That small, rough hand had become a lifeline for him, a link to what was real, what was true.

The one that immediately leaps to mind for having Large Aliens, Very Different Alien Culture, and a delightful language barrier, is Lyn Gala's Claimings, Tails, and Other Alien Artifacts.
