Necklace with anchor made of human hair and gold, 1850-1890. Gift of Andrea Tice (an heirloom from her family)
Hair jewellery often contained symbolic representations, such as the anchor shown above. Although it is covered in gold, both the chain and the anchor are made of hair. Due to their practical function of anchoring boats in the harbour, anchors are logically associated with safety and/or the navy. In Christian symbolism, the anchor is also associated with hope, the rope-wrapped anchor for the navy.
An anchor woven into a memorial hair chain may have signified the wish that the deceased and the wearer would meet again in the afterlife, or that the wearer would intertwine their hair with their loved one at home to remember them for as long as they were at sea, or that the former owner of the hair lost their life at sea.
Ultimately, the idea of remembrance lives on in this piece even if the original owner is no longer known, because even if the name is no longer known, one remembers a former living person.

First pet memorial of the year! These gorgeous calico cat arms were tanned & mounted for a repeat client recently. Lovely Peebz passed of old age back in October of last year and was memorialized as 2 forearm shaped pendants. I used a combination of tightly packed poly fill and poly pellets in the toes, to give each piece a nice but subtle weight [images shared with permission]
