When I'm not working on a project at a job or at home, I'll doing a lot of drawing just to get the ideas out of my head. Love drawing and it doesn't matter if it's in pencil or ink. Each has its own way of working with the ideas that come out of my head. Sometimes it's a matter of feeling. There are times with it feels like I should be drawing that idea in ink. Other times it will feel that a pencil approach would be better.
These drawings are from my "Book of Doodles Vol 3", which is still available on Amazon. Get your copy today.

Some parts of my sketchbooks have a fair amount of character drawings. These are all based off of women I saw, either in cafes or walking down the street. I remember distinctly this one woman walking down the street with her nose up in the air, as if she were trying to identify a certain smell. Capturing a look as well as the personality is important for good characters and for portraits. One feeds the other.

Weekends are for doing the fun stuff,... mostly. This weekend for me it's about the start of Spring cleaning and having some friends over for a card game this evening.  But it's also for looking at nature blooming and getting ready for summer and all things outdoors. It's also for doing some fun, non-work drawing.  This drawing was about the dormant plants waking up and having a meeting for how it's all going to go down in the coming months. The human in the background still in the bubble of late Winter/early Spring and wanting to escape out into the world.

Although the seasons have been blurring lately, thought I'd post the four seasons I created in Illustrator some years ago. This all vector illustration was part of a larger project that was so fun to work on. I did a lot of concepting for it.

Wednesday Random Art Post. (WRAP)
For today's WRAP, a drawing I did for a game concept many moons ago at a certain large company, about and evil genius (aren't they all?) Doctor in his lair, who in the game, was trying to take over the world and the player had to figure out how to stop him at every level of the game. I've got some color concept art for this as well but chose not to show it. Just talking about it back and forth with the game play designer was fun and exciting enough to get me inspired.

For so much of what we do as artists in the game biz, we concentrate on so many tiny details and making sure we get all the items in that a game needs to attract eyes. A simpler approach is just as appealing and can be done faster and at a lower cost. And there are plenty of examples out there. Here is just one example of a concept that I pitched but sadly, didn't go anywhere. I'm not a game play designer so my thoughts about how to play the game was about as simple as the art for the game. I still think it could have worked. "Newbies"

Having seen my first Troll a month ago in Issaquah, I’ve found out that there are 5 here in Western Washington State. So on Sunday I took a pilgrimage to see the other two that are on the main land. There is one more on Vashon Island and another on Bainbridge Island. I’ll see those maybe next month.
The first one that I saw on Sunday was over at the National Nordic Museum in Ballard. Right in front of the entrance. Instead of out in nature, like the rest of them.
And then the one in West Seattle at the beach in Lincoln Park. I ran into an ex-coworker from Pokemon and we talked for a while. That was fun.

To keep my mind coming up with concepts and possible character ideas, I always do a lot of doodling. Either in meetings, at the coffee shop, cafe, waiting rooms. Any time that would normally bore someone, I consider that time well spent letting my mind wander and ponder over visual ideas. It's pretty freeing and can be a bit of a catharsis during stressful times. Your mind gets caught up in the ideas and just scribbling. For this batch of Doodles... the upper left is a classroom bot engaging with the strange students via a stranger UI. Upper right is a caricature of Elvis Costello. Bottom left is a group of tech bros coming up with the latest tech to sell the public. Bottom right is basically me (bizarro Mike) getting woken up for work in the morning.

The drawings for my "DRAGON" book: These are the rough drawings I did of the Dragon that was inside me 4 years ago when I was sent home because it was thought that I had Covid. Nobody really knew what was going on and neither did I. I just knew that I didn't feel well. For the next several months I suffered through this and I thought a Dragon was a good metaphor for what was inside me. Each day I did a rough drawing of an idea of how I was dealing with the Dragon inside me and then did an ink drawing, tightening up the drawing I had made earlier in the day. All the while, still working on projects for my FTE job. I had enough energy but I was knocked out by the end of the day. It was rough but it eventually got better. I hope you enjoy seeing where the ink drawings started from. And don't forget, you can still get a copy of my Dragon book on Amazon, which right now is still on sale for $4.45... A real deal. I'm probably not making a dime off this sale. Sadly. https://www.amazon.com/Dragon-My-Butt-Around-Quarantine/dp/B08B39MV5J/ref=sr_1_8?dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.DVzESxlE-iSmiDKdGHNGjhfF5ADO4NAgpc1h4sPlsYpdBBp1IAHOiIdbOz0seDOMXxqnPi4oVKy6J4bfOZcsSFHGVJ3vww9qHGuwLYPJW53eW9AOURShDT4QYUXoIp-f5CGfgprlv6BQzjUuRpUcyEFHMZCcUahPx7ry-PNS96h2ZAlawXSUgUGpDUGtJzzx0IbtnFRAjbpxMKenuwkuGPanlh744UFzD5tIU9-QrBY.spGF_x-pLAmzfxd9rPYzplZ0jS7YPdROpnIZHurWi9Y&dib_tag=se&qid=1711654014&refinements=p_27%3AMike+Cressy&s=books&sr=1-8&text=Mike+Cressy

Occasionally I'll do an ink drawing that uses some symbolism and iconography to tell a bit of a story, as with these four ink drawings. It helps me to visualize stories for projects that I work on. I'm made many over the years. If you feel so inclined, let me know what you think the story is on each one of these.

Some years ago while working on a game concept where there had to be villainous main character, I had several ideas in mind that I thought could work well. (And this was before we had our own orange haired villain.)  I made more than just the two sketches of the upper left ones, of a villain based on Il Duce, with a tail. Then thought that they could look different. Perhaps like a mad scientist/doctor, a half animal/half squid, or maybe a skull headed Vegas nightclub owner. (LOL)
