Mark Farina Halloween 2015 Live Set
Tumblr media
This is a 3-hour audio recording of Mark Farina Halloween 2015 live set recorded in Orange County, California, on October 31, 2015.
Mark F'ing Farina. Easily in the top 5 deep house dj's. Probably in the top three. Maybe in the top 2?
Come on. I've never heard someone deliver such deep funk so consistently. Every. Single. Time.
So this is an interesting recording. It's not from my archive of classic rave recordings, nor something recorded recently. This is the audio counterpart to a live video stream I did all the way back in 2015.
Today, post Covid, the mention of live streaming elicits not even a yawn, we are so desensitized to it by now. For obvious reasons, the real streaming revolution happened 2019-2021. So I consider it a little feather in my cap that Rave Tapes was running good-sounding, multi-cam streams long before the trend took off.
The event? A cozy Halloween party hosted by Swerve Underground, the monthly event hosted by producer/dj Wally Callerio of Dufflebag Recordings and partner/dj 1st Nature. Wally has been a respected producer for years and had the right connections to pull some amazing names down to their Orange County venue, an hour south of Los Angeles. Names like Dereck Carter, Doc Martin, and other titans of the deep house movement.
So when the opportunity came up to do a live video stream of their Halloween party, taking place in a cool bohemian art space, with special guest Mark Farina? Pfft. It was the chance I had been waiting for, lol!
So, miraculously, the whole thing went off almost without a hitch. I say almost because I believe power was cut to the decks at one point. But considering it was a 2+ hour set, we forgot about it almost instantly after power was restored. Otherwise, the internet connection was good, my gear held up. It happened. In fact, here's the video evidence:
youtube
So this is the audio to that. While the audio in the YouTube version sounds unbelievably clean, this sounds even better. I finally went back and properly mixed the four audio channels, left-right stereo pair from the dj decks, then left-right stereo pair from the room mic.
It sounds absolutely pristine, if I do say so myself. I had to decide how loud to keep the mic levels vs the feed from the dj mixer. I think I am happy with these levels but I might change my mind and update the file at some point.
The content? Well, it's good ol' reliable Mark Farina. Of course every dj has a "look" and Farina certainly has his trademark glasses and scruffy chin. But man, when you see that familiar visage behind the decks and hear the funky bass line over the system, you know you have nothing to worry about. You know you're in for a good time.
Last time I saw Farina was EDC 2022 Bionic Jungle stage. It was very late Sat night. Actually very early morning Sunday about 4 am. Still dark and trippy.
Saturday. Hump day. People are grinding in more ways than one. And Mark is closing out little Bionic Jungle. I don't mean little in a condescending way. Actually, the inconspicuousness of the stage is what made it so great. It was def an intimate space and you could get right up close to your favorite deep house dj's. My only issue that night was that it wasn't going to yield a complete Rave Tapes recording. Yes, I recorded while I danced there. But knew I was arriving late because of another set, and I knew I was leaving early because I don't like getting stuck in parking. While there may have been an hour of material, the other issue was there was a nasty buzzing coming from some vibrating stage rigging.
So that's probably why I'm mentioning EDC here, because it's a good opportunity to discuss it since there will never be a Rave Tapes recording from that night to link it to.
I guess my point is, be it at Swerve Halloween 2015, EDC 2022, or the other times I've heard Farina play, Farina always, ALWAYS, delivers a top shelf performance.
While I'm always eager to bring these live sets to you for the sake of your listening pleasure, truth be told, I get excited when posting these because in most cases it's the first time I get to have easy SoundCloud access to the mixes, too.
And with this one, I'm over-the-moon thrilled for completely selfish reasons ;)
Nevertheless, please enjoy!

"Mr. Bubbles, Mr. Bubbles-"
A little boy's voice--the first little boy that Tim had discovered in the labyrinth city below Gotham--echoed through the cavernous halls. Tim crept over the rubble of a broken stalagmite that had fallen through the ceiling, destroying the white and gold decor and dripping water inside. The room up ahead was lit only from glowing green tubes of liquid that lined every wall of Amity, the ectoplasm that powered the entire city.
"Are you there? Are you there?"
He peeked out from behind a crumbled wall. On his own, the little boy was crouched over corpse, fresh enough that it's blood was still wet on the floor. The boy's giant needle, the go-to weapon of all the Little Sisters that Tim had seen so far, was jabbed into the corpse's stomach and, slowly, ectoplasm and blood filled the glass jar on the end.
"Bring me a lolli-"
There was no sign of a Big Daddy, but Tim knew there was one nearby. These children were never without their protectors after all.
"Bring me a toffee-"
And at this point, Tim had killed enough of them to know for certain that one was around.
His left arm, marked all over with the needle marks of constant Plasm and ecto-dejecto injections, tingled, like there were ants under his skin. Or more accurate, he mused grimly, electricity-
Don't Think About It.
"Teddy bear, teddy bear."
He kicked his bare feet excitedly as he finished harvesting ectoplasm. Screwing off the jar, the child lifted it up to his lips like a cup and drank the viscus liquid down in huge, chest-heaving gulps like his life depended on it. Unlike Little Sisters who wore gore-covered dresses, the Little Brother was dressed in a white medical gown, relatively clean considering his filthy surroundings. His arms and face were free from dirt or blood, and even his hair looked suspiciously washed and combed.
Tim tightened his grip on his gun.
The Little Brother sighed, wiping his mouth on his sleeve. Brushing off his skirt, he yanked the needle out of the corpse. Then, like he could sense him, the boy looked straight at Tim. He froze.
Blank eyes covered in a green flim stared at him... and the Little Brother smiled at him, his teeth stained brown from the muck. "Mr. Helper! There you are, I've been waiting soooo long! Big Sister thought you'd never catch up!"

Wonderful Things That May or May Not Be Wonderful!!! Yeah, I’ve been on a bit of a mushroom kick this week. Video games too and when one thinks of mushrooms and videogames, Nintendo’s golden boy, Mario, should be just around the corner…in his go-kart since it's time for another Mario Kart track. Specifically, Toad’s Factory from Mario Kart Wii. Yep, Toad had a factory. One with conveyor belts, gears, industrial presses,  platforms held by shipping cranes, crates, grates, sirens, bulldozers, mudpits and one heck of big band backing track scoring the three lap mad dash. Such an awesome concept and execution for a track It’s a darn shame it hasn’t come back since its original debut but hey, there are still seven more slots available in the Booster Course Pack. Who knows? Maybe this #wonderful OSHA nightmare will come around again. I’ll certainly be happy even if the people working under Toad’s capitalistic machinations probably won’t be.

Why am I so intrigued with The Last Of Us now, after all this time?
No reason.
(She says, rubbing the spot on her thigh where, in her dream, mushrooms sprouted from her flesh and she struggled to pull them out so that nothing would be left behind.)

King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard - Ice, Death, Planets, Lungs, Mushrooms and Lava
(Jazz Rock, Jam Band, Psychedelic Rock)
Mixing their psychy jazz-rock with winding, jam-band style compositions, King Gizzard's first October release is a thrilling, if uneven listen. Though these songs tend to meander, it's the band's exceptional solo sections and ability to hold a tune together that keeps Ice, Death, Planets, Lungs, Mushrooms and Lava moving along.
☆☆☆½
Like its title, Ice, Death, Planets, Lungs, Mushrooms and Lava is one highly-packed experience. King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard have always pulled from the worlds of jam bands and long-form Krautrock - think a mixture of CAN and Phish - but it often acted more as a supplementary part of their vast psychedelic rock and pop universe than a whole world in itself, hypnotic grooves and energetic instrumentation the support beam for whatever direction they wanted to head, fit for both Nonagon Infinity's looping garage rock and the jazzy prog-rock of Quarters. With Ice, Death, Planets..., the band seeks to give those jammy elements their own Petri dish to grow in, setting down some of their strongest grooves in years and letting the music flow naturally for as long as it takes to grow into something both beautiful and deeply imposing. The album's ideas are solid, but occasionally held back by their ambitions at the same time, these longer tracks and their emphasis on constant development leaving little breathing room and causing the album's impressive compositions to feel stuffy and, at worst, unimpactful. At its very best, Ice, Death, Planets... is a reminder of just how powerful a band King Gizzard can be, the harsher side of their sound that has been relatively dormant the past few years coming back in the hints of acid rock and heavy psychedelia they thrown in here and there, album singles Ice V and Iron Lung incorporating bits of noisy guitar work into red-hot fusion jams that manage to be both hypnotic and deeply engaging at once with their beautiful yet technical lead guitar work surrounded by strong grooves, buoyant basslines and subtle accompaniment parts - whether you want to lose yourself in the band's world or pick apart every little element, there's something in Ice, Death, Planets... you'll love. King Gizzard settle into a certain style for all seven of these tracks, but they aren't aiming for cohesion so much as a particular template they bend and break depending on what each track needs to do, opener Mycelium brighter and sweeter than the rest of the tracks with its wah-guitar opening solo and Afrobeat-tinged kick and snare patterns while the heavy centerpiece Lava relies more on its slow dynamic build to create enough tension for the second half of the track to completely explode, but it's all within this free-flowing psychedelic mindset that hangs over the album no matter the intricacies of King Gizz's sound at any given point. Regardless, there's a lot to love about Ice, Death, Planets... and how powerfully it brings back the darker side of King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard we haven't seen much of since the late 2010s. What has held me back from fully embracing Ice, Death, Planets..., though, is that there's little breathing room and constant movement without a clear end goal, King Gizzard's solid songcraft lacking a final destination and wandering about because of it - even if they almost always sound great while doing so. These songs are dominated by their solo sections so much that the interims between them feel shockingly empty and flat even with how much is going on all the time, the album's last two tracks Iron Lung and Gliese 710 suffering especially from this as King Gizzard close Ice, Death, Planets... out with an unexpected evaporation of intensity rather than taking the music in a new direction - I honestly would have preferred if the album closed out on the thirteen minute highlight Hell's Itch considering how definite and strong it feels compared to the songs succeeding it. It's harder to get past these little hiccups than on some of the band's other releases because of how long these songs are and how few of them make up the tracklist: if you're not a fan of the way Lava or Mycelium sound from the get-go, the songs never move far enough from their starting point to pique your interest for a second time, King Gizzard sticking to their guns for an album that's both a showing of their group cohesion and one of their most enclosed projects yet. Ice, Death, Planets... isn't a bad album, but like their other recent albums it doesn't do much to push its ideas further than what they show: these are robust, enormous psych-rock jams carried by their solo sections and mesmerizing drum grooves, but whenever things start to compress and the songs begin to feel monotonous rather than immersive there's little the band can do to pick up the pace, stuck following the same patterns and structures to keep these extended tunes from falling apart but often ending up sacrificing so much of the spontaneity and quick energy that's made many of their previous albums such a wealth of contemporary rock gratification, Ice, Death, Planets... trying to reward deep listening but without enough variation in its elements to justify that kind of focused album experience. It's just as strong as anything King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard have done in the past, and none of the shortcomings Ice, Death, Planets... has get in the way of those fundamental charms.
