Congress Passes the Respect for Marriage Act

Both the House and the Senate have passed the Respect for Marriage Act, which codifies same-sex and interracial marriages. The bill will head to President Joe Biden's desk to be signed into law, which is expected to happen soon.

The legislation passed 258-169 in the House Thursday with bipartisan support, after passing through the Senate last week with a 61-36 vote. Only 12 Republican senators voted in favor of the bill (none from my state of Kansas).

Mark Takano, a California Democrat and the first openly gay person of color in Congress, said, "This bill will pass today but it is a reminder of the necessity of our vigilance in the fight for the human rights and need to hold the judicial branch accountable. We must rise to the challenge and we will prevail."

The measure was first born in the House this summer following the Supreme Court's decision in Dobbs v Jackson, which reversed decades of precedent and ruled that access to abortion was not a constitutional right. Marriage rights advocates and Democrats expressed concern that the reversal could call other decisions regarding civil liberties into question, including marriage equality.

In his opinion of the Dobbs case, SCOTUS creep Clarence Thomas made a point to say that the landmark 2015 case legalizing same-sex marriage, Obergefell v Hodges, rests on the same legal principles that underscored Roe v Wade. Many feared Thomas was setting the stage for Obergefell's reversal.

President Biden said, "Today, Congress took a critical step to ensure that Americans have the right to marry the person they love. The House's bipartisan passage of the Respect for Marriage Act - by a significant margin - will give peace of mind to millions of LGBTQI+ and interracial couples who are now guaranteed the rights and protections to which they and their children are entitled. While we are one step closer on our long journey to build a more perfect union, we must never stop fighting for full equality for LGBTQI+ Americans and all Americans."

As vice president, Biden publicly broke with then-President Barack Obama to voice support for same-sex marriage rights in 2012. Obama ultimately joined him.

I’m really sorry, I coulda sworn there was a front shot of ‘em so you can see the design clearer. Hope these help, anyway!

And now some more observations

First, the camera moves so fucking fast and even at 0.1x speed it’s hard to see much of Renfield’s room. He’s got two pillows on a twin bed, this... chest? serving as a bedside table, an old-timey washbasin, a MESS of candle wax... Oh here’s the bug box. I never noticed before but it has a little claspy to keep it shut

Piles of books but an empty and maybe broken? china hutch in the back, can’t for the life of me ID that ceramic doodad- waay too big to be a shaving cream dealie... He’s also got MORE candlewax mess, and just fucking shoved an electric lamp on top of the candlestick? Dude? You okay? I mean I know he very much wasn’t in this scene but still.

And here’s something I never caught before. Look at his lower eyelid in this shot and in the one below.

See that? HIS EYES FUCKING GLOW WHEN HE’S GOT HIS POWER ACTIVE! I never noticed that before?! And the colour comes from inside and spreads out. Like, from the outside of the pupil. Neat!

As I’m going through at 0.1x speed, I’m also noticing, like. The place they’re in is in a state of disrepair. There are bodies, not just of the hunters, scattered around. This is not their first home. I wiiiiish we had a timeline of when they settled in New Orleans, because judging by the amount of bodies and the buckets and the blood throne, they’d been in that hospital a fucking while, so, like, Renfield had to scoop up burnt steak Dracula and coffin him and I guess put shit in storage until he bought the hospital? One of my magazines, Fangoria I think, had the director mention the blood throne being Renfield’s attempt to revive Drac intravenously, so... Did Renfield stow their belongings and his boss, buy the hospital, and then construct the throne and collect bodies before he even moved Drac in? What y’all think?

... Y’all think “shut up, Zombie.” I know. I get it. Anyway.

Drac’s eyes when enforcing his thrall are pale greeny blue,

and black with red around the pupils when he angy. Come to think of it, I wonder if the red in his eyes is the same deal as the gold in Renfield’s, in that it glows? Fuck that woulda been cool to see.

THESE INTERACTIONS MADE ME LAUGH SO HARD OML!!! I can't screenshot Lloyd and Acidius' convo because it's one of my favorites, along with Wu and Garmadon. Lmao they fight like children agh

But also I love the contrast of light hearted, funny humor in this chapter, yet there is that lingering sense of dread and sadness rolled up into all these segments. The less heavy moments, the more funnier ones is basically a representation of Halloween, being this cool, fun holiday where people indulge in their own desires. While the sadness that permeates in these segments (Lloyd’s abandonment issues, Jesse and Miranda over forgiveness, Kai and Olivia's heavy talk about self worth, then Garmadon, Wu, Mystake and their messy family issues) are like the heaviness of Day of the Departed. Liking how all of them have legacies or people they miss.

And Wu and Garmadon's fight will take first place. Wu trying to hit him first will always be funny to me <333333

I think part of why this chapter was so tricky to write was because I was struggling to balance the lightheartedness half the characters wanted to indulge in vs that sense of dread the other half just can't get out of their heads. I would either lean too hard one way or the other and I keep had to rewriting. T-T)9

But! Your comment has perfectly described just about everything I hoped to capture, so I guess I am successful in what I wanted to do! So, thank you for that (and heh, those scenes you sceencapped happen to be some of my favorites too~)

Hi!! I found myself in your tutorial tag (lovely gifs btw 💕!) and saw you use a variation of the video timeline/trimming method for your gifs and wondered if you posted a tutorial for that? Would love to see your method!! If that’s okay 😭💕

hey anon! i didn't post anything about that but it's super easy, let me show you.

first you have to have your video clip obviously, photoshop can open clips in these formats: .mp4, .mov, .avi, .ts (but only if they are encoded in h264).

if your video is .mkv (like most things film are if they are good quality) then you'll have to convert your clip to the formats i mentioned. I use avidemux when i have to do that, .mp4 is the easiest one.

okay with that out of the way, we're going to open things in photoshop. i'll be showing you with a clip in .mov i used to make gifs for my kpop blog:

we go file -> open and we search for our video file and then click on open it, we wait until photoshop loads it. Once it does you'll have your photoshop looking like this with your video loaded

in this part i usually move the red line to where i want my gif to start hit right click and click on set start of work area and to where i want it to end and do right click again and click on set end of work area or just simply dragging the thingys at the top of the timeline

i usually do this with long scenes so i don't have to trim a clip into several ones before opening photoshop, what i do is duplicate the canvas going image -> duplicate and do the same process but on a different timestamp

(note: this also works if you open screencaps going file -> open and clicking on one sceencap and then checking on the image sequence box, it'll open as if your sceencaps are a 'video')

duplicating the canvas will make your tabs look like this, it'll say copy and that's bc we're just editing the same thing in two different tabs

okay, now scenes are picked and trimmed to where we want them. now we crop it to whatever we want it to be sized. if photoshop gives you a warning that it'll have to be converted to smart object to proceed you click yes on that!!

okay we have our smart object, but if you notice it's inside a folder called 'video group' drag it out of there and then you can just delete the folder so it doesn't bother

here i like to duplicate my smart object bc when i trim a white line shows in the borders and it bothers me, so i duplicate it going layer -> duplicate layer, and then select all layers and convert again to smart object.

now here is basically the same process with any gif tutorial, if you gif only using timeline you can sharpen and start coloring and then save, using a video here when working on timeline works very well bc more often than not it'll have the original timeframe already set.

if you work with frames, you'll have to do the whole process of flattening everything to frames after you sharpen and then do the coloring (or you can sharpen and color and convert everything to smart object and then flatten everything to frames)

i use an action for this bc i can't be assed to do everything manually, so i recommend having a sharpen process action ready to go
