“But poetry, beauty, romance, love, these are the things we stay alive for” - John Keating
I gotta talk about this quote. Because that’s what Neil lived for. Neil lived for poetry, with the dead poets, he lived for the beauty of life and his friends, he lived for romance and love, his love for todd but also just his love for living, which is quite prominent throughout the film, he’s filled with so much love for everything. And his love for acting. He loved acting. So much. And then, and then, his dad takes all of that away. His dad takes him from Henley Hall, his dad takes away the poetry and beauty and romance and love from his life. Keating was right, those are the things that we live for. And when Mr Perry took those things away from Neil, he had nothing to live for anymore

THIS SCENE DESTROYS ME.
Tumblr media
when todd says that neil’s father killed him, and neil wouldn’t do that. the thing is i don’t think neil ever fully understood how much his friends cared about him and needed him, especially todd. and because neil was so good at hiding how much he was struggling, no one really understood how close he was to giving up his life.
so when todd runs into the snow screaming neil’s name, it hurts more than the actual suicide scene. because neil had already finished grieving himself in a way. in that last conversation with his dad, he had let go and resigned himself to the fact that he would never be able to truly live under his parents’ control, so he was numb and emotionless in when he shot himself.
but todd and the rest of the boys were now left not only with the pain and grief of losing neil, but also feeling lost and bewildered because they never believed that neil was hurting so much that he would actually take his own life.

Okay, so let me see if I understand correctly:
Boys wanting to write poetry is a metaphor for boys wanting the freedom to make out in the back of old bookstores and to wear lipstick while reciting Shakespearean sonnets without having to hear the constant disapproval of others
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Men running away to become pirates is a metaphor for men running away from the safe, heteronormative lives society forced them into in order to start a more genuine, albeit more dangerous, life for themselves
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Nerdy teens fighting monsters together is a metaphor for teens who were once outcasted by their community for being different helping each other to confront their trauma and to become the heroes of their own stories
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And women playing baseball is a metaphor for women reclaiming their femininity after spending most of their lives being told they’re “not real girls” because they don’t fit the mold the patriarchy wants them to fit into
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But ultimately all of them are just metaphors for a friend group being gayer than the fucking fourth of July

head cannon: years after neils death, todd is walking home after visiting all his friends, and when passing by a theater, a boy around the age of 17 stops him and hands him a flyer while smiling "come see our show! i play the lead!" and when todd looks up, just for a moment, he sees neil. so going forward he makes it his mission to go to every. single. show. that theater performs.

Something I only noticed on my rewatch: the tears visibly pouring down both meeks and todd's faces while they're singing at the memorial for neil, while charlie just looks... dead inside

the stages of love are
"Todd Anderson? Haven't heard that name before... must be new"
"Hey, I hear we're gonna be roommates."
"Forget how it works. What if - what if they said it was okay?"
"No <3"
*wide cow eyes stare*
"I'm not in love with Todd, that's-that's ridiculous."
"I'm in LOVE WITH TODD AND NO ONE CAN TELL ME ANYTHING" no one said shit
"I'll be an actor.. you be the writer. We'll be together. We can be unstoppable."
"Yes, I will marry you"

i watched Dead Poets Society a few days ago and havent been the same since:( just been thinking about how Todd grieves, its the purest form i have ever seen. like at least once a day i have thought of that one scene and almost started crying. just the thought of feeling so much emotional pain, the chock, the throwing up, the nonsensical screaming and the pure p a i n he must have felt… imagine loving someone so much that the loss of them feels like the loss of yourself,..

I need to talk about Charlie Dalton. Because that man knew about Todd and Neil. There’s no way he didn’t. Charlie was Neil’s best friend for so many years, there’s no way he didn’t see how Neil acted with and treated Todd. And he probably only had suspicions. Because up till that point he probably had no reason to think Neil wasn’t straight. And he realized it was true when he told Todd what happened.
Because Todd had such an extreme reaction. Yes, it was a terrible thing what happened. But Todd had only known Neil for 4/5 months (Americans start school in August, don’t they? Maybe, I’m Canadian, we start in September). So why did Todd have such a- a violent reaction to finding out? Because Neil was more than just a friend, compared to what he was to everyone else.
Charlie was Neil’s best and longest friend, and although we don’t see his reaction to the news, it seems apparent that Todd’s was the most intense. And that’s how Charlie realized. Because Neil meant more to Todd than anyone else. Because he was more than a friend.
But of course Charlie couldn’t ask. Any mention of Neil’s name and Todd would probably shut down. So Charlie just holds in this new information that he’s realized. And it’s all he can do. And it probably hurt him realizing that Neil was in love with Todd, and Neil didn’t tell him. Didn’t feel safe or ready or comfortable, whatever it was. Neil didn’t tell Charlie. And that probably hurt him even more.

thinking about how neil died only 10 days before christmas and how sad that christmas (and probably many others) must have been for all the dead poets who had just lost a close friend and had to probably fake happiness and festivity for their family
