So random thought due to fixating on two different things at once.
I'm rereading Percy Jackson and playing Pokémon Violet. This naturally lead to 'I wonder what Pokémon X would have?"
But instead of thinking of the main characters as intended, which there was some thought about, my brain started coming up with Pokémon pals for the gods.
There were some pretty quick picks, like Apollo and Solgaleo, Artemis and Lunala, Hades and Giratina, and Poseidon and Kyogre.
Then my brain went Persephone and Shaymin. And like in the anime movie Shaymin changes form depending on where they are. So like in the Underworld where Persephone's all faded out and ghost like, Shaymin's in Sky Form, and then when back above ground where Persephone's colorful again Shaymin's in ground form. Kinda like they look the opposite of one another?
Idk, I just think that combination would be cool/cute and looking at the legendary/mythical Pokémon as a whole that seemed the best pick.

-- on the origin of the kobayashi clan + the sun breathers (aka ryn read more about amaterasu and shinto religion and now we're here)
;; mun note: The Rock Cave Myth is by far the most famous of all Japanese myths. Of course, we can't discuss this super deeply without remembering that the Imperial family had a heavy hand in the lore of Amaterasu. Emperor Tenmu commissioned the Kojiki in order to emphasize the imperial family’s divine origins and to clarify their position as the rightful rulers of the realm. It also legitimized the ranks and duties of the most noble clans of the Yamato Chōtei (Yamato Court) by illustrating their divine descent as well.
In researching the Kojiki, I discovered that there exists a role long lost by the 14th century that tied the royal court to Shinto religion even further. The Ise Shrine is the shrine dedicated to Amaterasu-omikami, as well as other kami. Should members of the court/family be unmarried adolescent women, they would be chosen by the Emperor to serve the Ise Shrine as "saiō"
The role of the saiō was to serve as High Priestess at Ise Shrine on behalf of the Emperor, to represent the role first set out by Yamatohime-no-mikoto. Three rituals a year were conducted at the Shrine in which the saiō prayed for peace and protection. In June and November each year, she journeyed to the Shrine to perform the Tsukinamisai Festival. In September in the lunisolar calendar, she performed the Kannamesai Festival to make offerings to the kami of the year's new grain harvest. The Festival of First Fruits was held throughout ancient Japan up until the Heian Period. There are records from villages big and small, and the most important festival was based at the heart of the Amaterasu cult, Ise Shrine. Harvest festivals celebrated bountiful food resources to get the people through the winter until the next growing season. They gave thanks to the workers who toiled in the fields, gave honor and praise to the kami that helped them and requested continued support in the next cycle. They ensured a financially stable court and imperial family, who in turn guaranteed safety and prosperity to the common people. It was win-win.
The saiō could not return to the capital to be with her family until the Emperor abdicated the throne or died. It was only then that she could return to society and be eligible for marriage.
Now how does this tie to the Kobayashi clan? Read on below.
It has long been believed that the Kobayashi clan descended from Ame-no-Uzume-no-Mikoto, the goddess of the dawn. When Amaterasu-omikami hid inside a cave and refused to leave after the murder of her beloved priestess at the hands of Susano-o, the clever kami Uzume overturned a tub near the cave entrance and began to dance on it, tearing off her clothing in front of the other deities. They considered this so comical that they laughed heartily at the sight. This dance is said to have founded the Japanese ritual dance, Kagura. She carried a shiro nikite (white cloth), as well as an ao nikite (blue cloth) , but those sacred objects were probably lost in the scuffle of her crazed, beautiful dancing.
Amaterasu-omikami was intrigued by the joy and laughter, and asked what was going on. Ame-no-Uzume proclaimed they had found a god even more beautiful and stronger than her. Amaterasu was shocked, and upon creeping out from the rock, a kami held up the sacred Mirror. Amaterasu was captivated by her own beauty, and the door to the cave was shut behind her. The sun had come back.
Uzume would go on to aid Amaterasu's grandson in coming to Earth to rule over Japan. This great honor earned her own mortal children a place in court- which in turn split into two clans- Sarume and Kobayashi.
Inu Kobayashi was an unmarried, young daughter of the clan. The emperor chose her for her beauty and dutifulness to become the saiō of that generation. Inu was heartbroken, even if she did want to serve the gods, she wanted only to become a geisha- to entertain and please people the same way Uzume had. While she had become the saiō she would soon run away, having a family and starting her own offshoot of a clan within the forest.
While visiting Ise Shrine years later (sometime during the late 9th century), Inu received a vision- a man named Taira no Masakado would try to brutalize the land in his quest for the throne. His daughter, Takiyasha-hime, was a sorceress who had summoned hundreds of yokai to help in corrupting the mortal plane. Inu's sacred power was the only missing piece the kingdom had for fighting back.
Inu would accept her duty then. With the sacred blade and holy mirror, she fought the demon summoning Taira clan, before sealing the culmination of their hatred and dark power, The Dark One, into a mask.
Ultimately, Inu would perish from the toll of such magic. Her family members in the forest began to witness strange powers- a gift from Amaterasu for defending the mortal world from darkness. The kagura-like moves of Inu's swordsmanship and ritual to seal the Dark One soon became the Sun Wolf Kagura, passed down through the clan even as it grew into a strange group of Sun Breathers.
The clan was forced to hide. To conceal their location, deep in the mists of the Lost Woods. The seal upon the mask holding the Dark One could never be allowed to be broken, and they entrusted that duty to Miyuki...
And now, unknowingly, to Robin. Inu's sole remaining descendant.

What Pokémon do you think other eoa characters would start out with like Esteban, Victor, Carla, Isa, Ash, etc
yesssss more Pokemon!!!
I like the idea of Isa with something like Klink or Magnemite -- something mechanical to help her with her inventions. The former could help her actually operate her contraptions and the latter could help her find misplaced tools and such. In a modern AU I could also argue Porygon to handle software components of her more complicated inventions.
The malvago characters are easy because they already have animal motifs -- Victor could have a Skorupi, Carla could have a Spinarak (there are more spider Pokemon than that but Spinarak is the most quintessential of them imo), and Ash could have either a Hoothoot or a Rowlet. Of course, none of these characters actually started as malvagos, so for some Pokemon more suited for their pre-malvago lives...
I like the idea of Ash having started with Plusle and Minun as her "two pet mice" from "The One and Only". Uh, RIP to them, I guess. Zopilote's Mandibuzz was just too high of a level for the type advantage to be much help.
For Carla, my first non-spider thought was Zorua because of its association with illusions and disguising itself, but it may be too meek of a Pokemon for someone like her. My next thought was Purrloin, which is specifically known for charming people in order to steal from them, which, y'know, but I'm also trying to give everyone a different starter and I really want Victor to have a Purrloin, for reasons I will get into in a second. Mawile could work for similar reasons as Purrloin, and Poochyena could work for its extreme tenacity.
So Victor having Purrloin as his starter is important to me specifically because I would have Esteban with Nickit as his starter. The two are both associated with theft, tying in with Victor and Esteban's background in sleight-of-hand and petty theft around the castle, but more importantly, Purrloin and Nickit are considered bitter rivals in the Pokemon universe because they compete for territory. They also aesthetically fit with the two -- Purrloin/Liepard have green eyes and purple as their main color, whereas Nikit/Thievul have a black/white/dark-orange-that-we-can-totally-call-red-for-now color pallet matching Esteban's. The truly key part of Thievul's design, though:
Tumblr media
It has Esteban's mustache. This is just his Poke-sona, I'm absolutely losing my mind. It's just missing the goatee.
Esteban with a Nickit also works as a parallel to Elena, if she started with one of the fox Pokemon discussed in the last eoa/Pokemon crossover post.
