fic rec friday 9
hi!! welcome to fic rec friday. every week, i pick five fics i have bookmarked and rec them with a little review. check them out!
Yeehaw by @buoyantsaturn
Or: 5 times Will had a secret power and 1 time he didn't
yall DO NOT UNDERSTAND how much i love this fucking fic. i read it one time when i was like 16, before i started bookmarking fics, and then a couple years ago i spent TWELVE GODDAMN DAYS sifting through every fic in my history to find this. i LOVE this fic. i love will having a strange scattering of powers he doesnt really advertise. its so fun and exciting. i also love 5+1 fics w my whole soul
2. give me one good honest kiss by @ethannku
One second Jason is across from him, lounging against the wall; the next, he’s leaning in, closing the distance between them. And then the warmth is back, blooming across Leo’s face, and he’s worried he’s going to start a fire. His eyes subconsciously slide shut. He registers a soft pressure on his cheek, Jason’s hand, and Leo is certain that his face must be burning. Jason sits back before he’s set aflame, though, and a smile flickers on his face. Leo’s lips tingle. Jason’s hand is still on his cheek. Without thinking, Leo darts his tongue out to lick his lips. Cherry. “Does that answer your question?” - Or; four times Jason kisses Leo, and one time Leo kisses him back
i mentioned my love for 5+1s. this one has SO MUCH. theres a sprinkling of implied autistic leo, explicit nonbinary nico, lesbian piper, some LOVELY leo & piper moments (i love them so bad), and jason just like. deciding he is going to be obvious and start dating leo. while leo is sitting there like ?????? sir????? and setting himself on fire is so so funny to me
3. over lame jokes and laundry detergent by @rosyredlipstick
met doing laundry at 2am college au - Nico likes his alone time and is more then a little pissed off when annoying med student Will Solace throws his routine off balance.
ONE OF MY TOP TEN FAVE ROSYREDLIPSTICK FICS.....LIKE I GIGGLE EVERY TIME!!! nothing is funnier to me than nico trying to be the wickedest grouch and he just. cant. because will makes him smile without meaning to. and theyre STRANGERS?? AND THIS IS STILL HAPPENING?? like i go feral every time. also the WAY nico was eyeing him...boy i get you 😭😭
4. water splashin' and sun shinin' by @rosyredlipstick
Nico is absolutely aghast with the conditions he's forced to work under. Sure, the surf shack has air conditioning and a fully stocked snack area, and the wifi isn't bad, and it doesn't hurt that's he's in the shade all day, but how in the gods names is he expected to work when lifeguard Will Solace won't put on a damn shirt?
no trope and i mean NO trope will ever be better than both will and nico being catastrophically humiliatingly ninth circle of hell chipping away to find the tenth down bad for each other. and not doing anything about it for weeks. just constant thirsting and pining it is so so SO funny to me. that is their dynamic. and a fic where will just has an excuse to never wear a shirt and nico has an excuse (no he doesn't) to stare...they are so constantly real
5. petal to the metal by @rosyredlipstick
“How do I passive aggressively say fuck you in a bouquet?”
i think i have been doing these fic rec fridays long enough to tell yall my truth: fics written in 2016 were elite. i dont know what it is about the year, but consistently, fics, especially by prolific authors, written in 2016 have something special that just make you read them eight billion times. this was one of those fics where i read it to the end, kudosed, and then scrolled right back up to the top and read again. so so so fun. rizzed up nico RIGHTS
thank you for joining me this friday!! happy reading!!

I dont think anyone subscribes to you for t rated 5 +1s in your own au lol. Chop chop with those wip’s porn girl!
Well. Quite a bit to unpack here on an otherwise unassuming Friday!
#1:
Tumblr media
#2: I actually track this stuff. Admittedly the E-rated percentage is a bit higher if you look at RWRB only, but overall...
Tumblr media
#3: I think anyone who subscribes to me on AO3, or indeed anyone who follows the kiwiana-writes tag here on tumblr and sees all those fucking WIPs, knows that I like to write a bit of variety. That's not to say there aren't definite underpinnings of, like, themes and vibes that I return to over and over (which I can only assume are why people subscribe to me), but if someone only likes my college AUs, or only likes my post-canon stuff, or only likes my E-rated stuff, or only wants to listen to my podfics, they're probably going to have a much more successful time saving the tag search than subscribing to me at the author level. Or they've mastered the art of archiving and moving on without complaining about it, like I do when the authors I'm subscribed to write something that doesn't interest me. It's a useful skill! I highly recommend cultivating it.
#4: AO3 not giving series stats is and continues to be the bane of my life, but based on the number of people who subscribed to the OG actor AU, there's probably a significant chunk of people who aren't subscribed to me as an author and only want the actor AU verse stuff. And good for them! I LOVE that AO3 offers multiple ways to subscribe so you can get notified for the stuff you want (my kingdom for the ability to subscribe to individual pseuds, though.)
#5: This fandom is OVERFLOWING right now. Like, I can't keep up. You only want to read E-rated stuff? Awesome! Well over 100 E-rated fics have been posted in the RWRB bookverse tag just this week (it looks like most of the movieverse smut has also been tagged bookverse, but either way it's also very easy to find). Or go back to older fics and find some hidden gems—there's nothing an author loves more than for someone to come in and gush about a fic they wrote a year or two ago.
#6: You don't pay me, and I'm not subject to annual review. One of my favourite authors was talking this morning about how sometimes she thinks about taking a break from writing for RWRB because it's starting to feel a little rat racey, and that would suck for me personally because I love her stuff but god knows I couldn't blame her, because the (extreme minority but still exhausting) entitled comments and rudeness really do not help. Stop treating your favourite authors like content creators who owe you something new on a regular schedule, because that's a damn good way to ensure they don't want to create anything new ever again. Like... anon, you haven't even bothered to couch this in a compliment. The bar is ten feet underground and somehow you still managed to trip over it.
#7: Not to be all 'back in my day' but... well, back in my day, snippets and peeks into the universe of a remotely popular longfic were pretty much the standard lol. Nobody is forcing you to read them, I promise.
#8: I've posted two E-rated fics in the last two weeks.
#9: Honestly I just really want to reiterate #1 because what the hell lol. While pronouns don't equal gender, it's pretty reasonable to extrapolate from pronouns if you don't have any other info to go on—and of the three "main/standard" pronouns, the one most closely associated with 'girl' is the only one that ISN'T in my bio 🤦

Todays rip: 12/01/2024
9来4s
Season 2
Featured on: THE SILVAGUNNER CHRISTMAS COMEBACK CRISIS ORIGINAL SOUNDTRAXX: vol. 1
Ripped by dante
youtube
Uh, so, hi, everyone. I'm going to apologize ahead of time if this post reads a bit more shakily, a bit less structured than what it maybe usually does. I always have a timeline of rips to cover over the week laid out ahead of time, and was really not expecting to cover 9来4s as part of it - I thought, naively, that today would just be a day like any other, one more on the pile. I wake up, get dressed, check the SiIvaGunner YouTube feed - and almost collapse onto the floor in shock.
The Christmas Comeback Crisis is back. Ten hours from the point of writing this sentence, the eleventh episode of the main SiIvaGunner storyline will premiere on YouTube.
I don't think I've ever done an effective job of conveying to people just how much the Christmas Comeback Crisis means to me. Sure, rips that I love are one thing, with those you can understand what I'm talking about with just a listen yourself. But the Christmas Comeback Crisis series is so difficult to truly appreciate without the knowledge, the memories and attachment to the channel from having been with it the whole time. To me, it marked the point where all of SiivaGunner's potential as a narrative, all of the loose threads of lore and jokes, all of those feelings of joy and sadness and comradery that flew like sparks throughout Season 1s 9-month run, were distilled into a streamlined narrative. It felt as if a bunch of stray thoughts were finally put to paper, a world envisioned by all of SiIva's viewers finally envisioned with an engrossing conflict and beautiful art. And it felt to me like the team themselves knew just how golden the idea they'd landed on was, as the scope of the storyline quickly expanded from just Christmas of 2016 to eventually enveloping the entirety of Season 2's run.
The final core episode of the Christmas Comeback Crisis released at the tail end of Season 2, on Christmas Day. That is to say, December 25th, 2017. It is currently January 12th 2024 - six years, two weeks, and four days have passed, as the main story of the channel has remained in limbo. When I watched that episode, live on the date of upload, I was still a teenager. I've followed the channel since, still immensely invested, still closely following and paying attention to the lore introduced since - the Side Stories and Haltmann's Archives of Season 3 and Season 4: Episode 1, the King for Another Day Tournament and its fallout across both episodes of Season 4, the many misadventures of Wood Man across Season 5, having seemingly left the Christmas Comeback Crisis canon altogether to explore different worlds where he could have fun with little consequence - only for it all to come crashing down on him in Season 6. After all of that time, all of that buildup, after Season 7 has already been one of the channel's all-around, best-ever years - the cherry on top has landed. Episode 11.
Beyond the lore, the world, the artwork, the storyline, the characters, and the community that's supported it all, what has held the Christmas Comeback Crisis together for me and many others has been the sheer passion present in all those aspects - including, of course, its outstanding soundtrack. I've talked about it before with voiceless, with 時の回廊 <ver. CCC>, with vlEP, and now here - but dante is, genuinely, an *exceptionally* talented musician, possibly my favorite amidst the entire SiIvaGunner team, and he has been completely outdoing himself on the Christmas Comeback Crisis' soundtrack since the day it first began - his music, remixes, arrangement, and overall sound direction has breathed a kind of energy and life into the story that's immersed me in ways I could never have expected.
9来4s plays during Episode 8 of the Christmas Comeback Crisis, An Acrimonious Assault - which sort of marked a point of no return for the series. After the 6th episode, Advent of Hell, just barely managed to release during Christmas of 2016, and the 7th episode, Loves the Ladies, released four entire months later due to expressed production issues, it felt like the team had officially realized just how big the project was getting. Yet, despite the woes that the 7th episode had presented, the team pushed on - and the series continued until the end of the year. That energy, that hype and love for the channel, is echoed all throughout 9来4s, and it's a feeling I haven't truly felt since that Season that the series once ended during.
At least, that's what I once said. Because now, *we are so fucking back.*

an excruciatingly long ramble about the '03 turtles and the enneagram 🐢❤ pt2
[ intro + disclaimers post ] [ pt 3 - leo ] [ pt 4 - don ] [ pt 5 - mikey ]
raph, 8 with a 7 wing
intro + why raph
welcome to the first of these giant posts. i’m. not kidding, you’re gonna click ‘read more’ and see why this series is titled “an excruciatingly long ramble”. i’ve done my best to section it off so you might have an easier time finding your place again if you need or want to take breaks. there’s no way i’m going to cover everything there is to talk about, so i might write and link ‘addendums’ to these posts later on as i think of things.
since raph is the first one, his might be a bit longer than the other three because there are a few enneagram terms that i’ll define as we go. you can then take those with you to the upcoming three posts. so please bear with me, grab a snack, a drink, some nice background music, and WE RIDE.
• . • . •
i wanted to start this project with raph because i feel like we start the series at his lowest/unhealthiest point.
only four episodes into the show (meet casey jones, s1ep4) we see him lose control of his temper in a serious way: he attacks mikey. throughout the rest of the episode he's forced to ‘face himself’ in casey and start monitoring his anger.
while we see him continue to grapple with his anger throughout the series, this is his worst moment. he has nowhere to go but up. in contrast, we see leo in probably his healthiest state of mind at the beginning of the series only to be at his worst in the first half of season 4. but back to raph; we'll have time for leo later.
as the series continues, we see glimpses of this temper rear its head again, with some examples being at the end of their encounter with karai in city at war (s2ep16) or during his fight with traximus in the battle nexus (s2ep24). in these instances, we get a close-up shot of his eyes narrowing and, with traximus, the area around them darkening. this was something that was specifically focused on during s1ep4 whenever he began to lose control. the loss of control is still THERE, it’s just less frequent now. he’s growing.
i think it’s also important to highlight that mikey ribs on him during the battle nexus (s2ep25) not unlike how he does in s1ep4, too. sure, they might be in an environment that shields them from danger of serious injuries, but i think it says a LOT that mikey’s comfortable provoking raph to the degree he does. raph’s acted on his apology, has done work, and mikey knows this. he's watched him do it. it's time already to be The Worst™ again.
but enough about why i chose raph to go first; let's cover the basics of an 8.
bare basics of the 8
as stated in the introductory post, the enneagram focuses heavily on the why and the motivation behind your behavior.
8s are one of the three assertive types (along with 3s and 7s), and they’re a part of the gut triad (made of 8s, 9s, and 1s). assertives can be described as moving 'against people'. they respond to stress or difficulty by building up, reinforcing, or inflating their ego; they will expand rather than back down or seek protection. assertive types will often have issues processing their feelings.
the gut triad may also be referred to as the ‘doing’ or the ‘instinct’ triad, as they respond instinctively and tend to be honest and direct in their self expression. i’ve also seen it referred to as the ‘anger’ triad since these types tend to have problems with aggression and repression, and they can carry a great deal of rage. types in the gut triad seek autonomy and are concerned with resistance and control of their environment. an 8 externalizes it. a 9 forgets it. and a 1 internalizes it. there’s a lot more information about the triads out there, but this is what we’ll take with us for now.
an 8’s basic fear is that of being harmed or controlled by others, of violation.
their basic desire is to protect themselves and determine their own course in life.
they believe they’ll be okay so long as they are strong and in control of their situation.
childhood take-aways
at an early age, 8s begin to understand that in order to keep their environments, themselves, and the people they care about from being hurt, they have to have willpower, persistence, and endurance. 8s often “grow up too quickly” and focus on survival issues. they’ve picked up that “might makes right”.
we don’t get to see a lot of the boys’ youth, but we’re given an idea in the first episode, things change (s1ep1), of the perspective they were raised under. i’ll be referring back to that throughout this section of each post. master splinter states:
“your path in life will not be an easy one. the outside world will not be a friendly place for you. you four are different in ways the surface dwellers would never understand. to survive, you must master these skills i teach you: the powers of stealth and secrecy. you must become kage, shadow warriors, and you must never be discovered by the outside world.”
8s ask themselves “how can i--and the few people i care about--survive in a cruel, uncaring world?”. it’s possible that this way of thinking was only solidified by movies they saw growing up, or even witnessing what casey was going through during the lesson (s3ep13). if the outside world isn’t friendly to what it considers ‘normal’, then surely it won’t be kind to what’s different.
8s were often independent, adventuresome, and assertive as children. they'd be found running ahead of the pack. they’re the kid who will stand up to the playground bully without flinching. they might have questioned authority, trusting themselves more than most adults, which lead to being punished frequently.
8s often find themselves in the role of the scapegoat, the “black sheep” or problem child. raph even calls attention to this, himself, in his ‘03 profile: referring to himself as “the angry young man” and “the dark one”.
it's brief, but i think we get a glimpse of this in s2ep23 at the start of the battle nexus arc: master splinter starts to express his disappointment in leo for following him to the nexus, but raph steps in immediately to shoulder the blame. he could have stayed quiet but, no. he’s the ‘problem child’ here. he can take the heat.
raph as an 8
now that we've touched on the basics of an 8, as well as a few things they may have picked up early in life, let's take a look at raph and his 8.
8s can sometimes be nicknamed: ‘the challenger’, ‘the leader’, ‘the protector’, ‘the provider’, ‘the entrepreneur’, ‘the maverick’, or ‘the rock’.
i’ll continue to refer to raph by his numerical type because, while the nicknames that grant a surface idea of their behavior, most users of the enneagram prefer to avoid descriptive labels. one 8 might feel being called ‘the provider’ suits them while another 8 might not see themselves in that label at all. nicknames are quick summaries/general ideas, but it’s good practice to use the number type itself.
an ‘average’ 8, in terms of their mental and spiritual health, tends to be a steamroller rather than a diplomat and have a black and white way of thinking: people are good or bad, an opinion is right or wrong, the answer is yes or no, etc. this isn’t to say raph can’t acknowledge nuance (far from it), but rather that 8s believe not having clarity or absolute certainty about your position and viewpoints represents weakness or--worse--cowardice. the rest of us have opinions, the 8 has facts. they don’t have a lot of patience for indecisive people, and they might use aggression to emotionally protect themselves. many exhibit an abundance of common sense.
8s are extraordinarily tough, physically and mentally. they can absorb a great deal of punishment without batting an eye. raph has a tendency to be the one catching blows for his brothers or guarding them during fights. we can refer back to being the 'problem child' as well; he can handle the heat. he’s an anchor who keeps his brothers grounded when worries spike, and he tends to be blunt, to the point, and possibly the most ‘world-wise’ out of the four.
8s want to be loved but often feel rejected or like misfits, which becomes more evident in their “take it or leave it” attitude as they get older. you can accept them as they are, or you can get out. they attempt to protect themselves by rejecting others first, and they might develop a fear of dependency. the “i don’t need you guys” sort of mentality. during tales of leo (s1ep19), raph even says “who needs you?” to leo before he tells his story.
it likely goes without saying that raph, like many 8s, admires strength. since their basic fear revolves so much around maintaining what power and control they have, 8s are the types of people who can walk into a room and immediately know who holds the most ‘power’. they’ll just as likely be deciding whether or not that power is deserved, and if they’ll be with or against it. it probably took raph like, what, five seconds to realize that one big alien was the head honcho in the big house (s2ep3) and he took them out first excuse he got.
raph wants people to challenge him back; an 8 can quickly lose respect for you if you’re unwilling to stand toe-to-toe with them (even if the 8 disagrees with you, they'll respect that you held your ground). they also want the truth. they don’t want you to ‘protect’ them from unpleasant details or facts. if they don't have all the information--no matter how harsh or unpleasant it may be--they can't control the situation or hope to reach their desired outcome.
let’s elaborate a bit on what the hell a ‘wing’ is. the enneagram is depicted as a wheel--kind of like a clock, if that helps you picture it without a visual aid (albeit i’ll link one here; ignore the arrows for now, we'll return to them).
a type’s wing are the two numbers that neighbor it on the wheel. the wings for an 8 are: 7 and 9. when someone says they’re a type “with a wing”, that means that they feel influenced in some way by that neighboring type. since the enneagram looks at ‘why’ and motives, you might find that the wing you lean toward more might fluctuate or change as you grow and experience life.
i'm confident raph is an 8w7, meaning his enneagram type is an 8 but he takes influence from 7. delightful, then, that mikey’s a 7. i think it’s a nice little way to tie them together when it’s time for Shenanigans™.
8s who have 7 wings are sometimes called ‘the independents’. along with being one of the most energetic and sociable types, people of this subtype tend to be risk-takers, adventurous, and combine the 8’s need for intensity with the 7’s love of anticipation. they’re practical, pragmatic, competitive, and not concerned with pleasing others, but also tend to be lead by their feelings, resulting in them being impatient and impulsive. they might be more confrontational and aggressive and are less likely to back down from a fight than an 8w9.
i remember seeing a link to one of those character… personality across all quizzes type of wikis somewhere and if memory serves raph was listed as an 8w9. i can’t help but wonder if that decision was made because it would give him two types on the instinct/gut triad, verses an 8w7 where his core type is on the instinct/gut triad, but his wing is in the thinking/head triad. we’ll discuss that one more when we get to don and mikey. *murmuring from the audience* yes, mikey is on the thinking/head triad. he’s actually fully on it, wing and all. *more murmuring from the audience* i’ll get to it, i’ll get to it.
but, no, 8s with a 9 wing have an almost deceptively laid back quality to them and are much more willing to be open and affectionate around their loved ones. 8w9s are sometimes nicknamed ‘the bear’ for that reason and, while highly protective and aggressive in being so, i don’t really think of raph when i think of that (you can see where labels might cause a problem). 8w9s are more willing to let their walls down in safe spaces; raph appears guarded and careful just about every time we see him no matter whose company he’s in. his walls only come down in periods of high emotion and, even then, he’s either reluctant to let them show or tries to hide them immediately after the moment passes, even getting angry that they managed to surface at all.
the wing isn't the only other type that influences your core number, though. let's talk about the other two.
stress & security numbers
as i said at the beginning of this post, raph’s is likely going to be the longest because i’ll be introducing various enneagram terms as we go along that you can apply to the other posts going forward. bear with me, please, this information is going to help in the last three sections of the post.
i stated that the enneagram can be compared to varying colors, or even a color wheel. There can be an infinite different types of red, but they are all still expressions of the same base hue. maybe an orange-red, a violet-red, a pale pink, the list goes on. likewise, the enneagram types take influence from the other types, even ones that wouldn’t be considered their wings. these would be their ‘stress’ and ‘security’ numbers.
‘stress’ and ‘security’ are meant to refer to the current mental health level of the individual, with security representing--as you might have guessed--the healthiest state of mind you can be in and stress being the unhealthier side of that. when a type is in an unhealthier state of mind, they begin to adopt the negative traits of their stress number. vise versa, when in a healthier and secure state of mind, they begin to adopt the positive traits of their security number. you may have noticed on the wheel i linked earlier all those arrows in the center. those point to a type's stress and security. let’s start with raph’s stress number.
raph’s stress number is 5. this means that in a stressed or unhealthy state of mind and spirit, raph begins to show the negative behaviors associated with 5s.
(i love looking at raph and don from the enneagram perspective because it’s a common misconception that don and raph are polar opposites. i think their link in their stress and security numbers illustrates that they have a lot more in common than seen on the surface. because raph’s stress number being 5 means that don’s security number is 8. but more on that when we get to don).
in times of high-stress or low-spirits, 8s will become solitary. they’ll minimize their own comfort, take poor care of themselves and may succumb to insomnia or unhealthy diets. they might spend more time brooding or strategizing to size up a situation than they might actively engage with it. they can become extremely cynical and contemptuous of the beliefs and values of others, nihilistic, and have little hope of reconnecting with themselves or those around them.
i'll cover this more in don's post but for some examples: don, being a 5, will often withdraw to his lab and overwork himself (we can see examples of this in s2ep13 return to the underground, or continuing to push himself despite being sick during the second half of season 4).
when it comes to raph, we have a few examples of the 5’s negative traits showing through in periods where he would be unhealthy mentally and spiritually:
when he realizes his temper’s getting out of hand, he’ll isolate himself and “get some air” (some examples, s1ep4, s1ep24)
he’s the most reluctant to talk to leo during tales of leo (s1ep19), and after his story he separates from the group to stand by the window (while not fully leaving the room to isolate, it’s the farthest he’s willing to go from leo's side)
he spends most of the city at war arc (s2ep14-16) retreating from the conflict, where leo is actively engaging with it
in same as it never was (s3ep21), raph has isolated himself from leo and mikey. he expresses contempt toward leo’s decision to leave master splinter behind. he’s the one who calls the situation “hopeless”.
an 8’s security number is a 2. when in a healthier state of mind, they take on the positive traits of a 2; they have the ability to see potential in people and want to help those people recognize resources and strengths they didn’t know they had. a key word for a healthy 8 is “empowerment”. they would agree with the phrase “give a person a fish and they eat for a day; teach them to fish and they can feed themselves for life”.
8s allowing their 2s to surface means learning to open their hearts to others, letting their guard down and expressing the tenderness they’ve so carefully hid away. it’s important to understand that this movement is not accomplished by imitating the qualities of a 2. an 8 must have greater contact with their hearts and grow comfortable with their gentler feelings. they need to stop equating vulnerability to weakness.
i think some good samples of raph’s 2 coming to the surface might be found:
the exchange with mikey as they're cornered by mousers; “well, it’s been fun, guys” “even me?” “especially you, mikey” (s1ep3)
helping leo recover in monster hunter (s1ep20) and forging a new set of swords with him
every fucking time he gasses don up, but for a specific example, return to the underground (s2ep13)
everything with mrs. morrison in touch and go (s3ep8)… just all of it. don’t even look at me.
throughout all hallows thieves (s4ep12) he’s cheery and even a little nostalgic toward halloweens past. we get an earnest, unguarded laugh out of him.
healthy, integrating 8s make outstanding leaders; they’re able to communicate their profound respect and admiration of others, and they better recognize boundaries and limits--especially their own.
HEY, LET'S TALK ABOUT THAT LEADER THING. i'm sure some of you locked onto that when i listed 'the leader' in the nicknames section.
raph’s temperament and unwillingness to let his 2 surface often gets in the way of him taking a leadership position. he once expressed a desire to be the ‘top turtle’ but made the decision to follow leo. at the end of his flashback during tales of leo, we see him eagerly asking leo what he did to stop the alligator and enthusiastically following him back out of the tunnel. not a smidge of negative feedback in sight. i believe he recognizes and respects leo’s ability to lead, be it by strategy or morals, more than gives into his desire to lead. remember that as far as the 2003 series is concerned: leo is the UNOFFICIAL 'leader'; this is a role he naturally steps into, not a responsibility that was directly assigned to him (i think raph might even be the only one who refers to him as 'fearless leader' or a 'leader' at all, but i could be wrong). 8s don’t need to BE the person in control, they just don’t want to be controlled. they will follow other leaders who are decisive and have earned their respect. to anyone who wants to point out that leo and raph still argue a lot, don't forget about what i said in regards to holding your ground with 8s. they may not like it in the moment, but your ability to hold your ground will be recognized. leo more than often holds his ground when raph challenges him.
(when raph and leo butt heads it’s not because they’re at odds with each other because raph wants to lead or because leo doesn’t consider raph capable of leading, it’s because they’re both stubborn fucking idiots who’re thoroughly convinced their way is the right way; for raph admitting he’s wrong is a show of weakness and surrendering control which is a fear for 8s and for leo it’s a kick to his pride and ability to be ‘good’ which is a fear for 1s. simplifying it down to a power struggle between them drives me up a wall, iN THIS ESSAY I WILL--).
while a small example, a moment from the first notes from the underground episode (s1ep13) has always stuck with me when it comes to raph’s potential and ability to lead: he’s not only the one to throw the grapple to get them across the bridge, but when they’re dangling from a stalagmite after the bridge collapses, he’s the one who gathers them together to do ‘crack the whip’. leo actually doesn’t have any dialogue in that whole sequence; raph’s the one who takes charge and gets them safely to the other side.
it’s also interesting that in cases where leo’s not present AND raph’s in the company of someone similar in behavior to him, his 2 seems to come out on its own. when running around alone with casey, raph is the one reining him in. similar case with godman falcon in across the universe (s3ep20). you could use tyler in lone raph and cub (s1ep24) as another example, but i’m not fully counting that as tyler is like. ten. and stinky.
cardinal sins - 8 and lust
here's term that, on the surface, might appear a bit self-explanatory, but it tends to be a bit more nuanced than that. at least as far as the enneagram is concerned.
every type on the enneagram comes with its own ‘cardinal sin’; you might recognize seven of them from the traditional deadly sins. a type’s cardinal sin is less of a ‘sin’ and more of an almost addictive, involuntary and repeated behavior that we can only be free of when we learn to recognize and manage it. learning to manage your type’s cardinal sin is one of the purposes of the enneagram as a tool.
an 8's cardinal sin is ‘lust’. don’t mistake this for lust purely in its sexual definition; this is ‘lust’ as in the drive and need for intensity. 8s want to feel solid and alive; interactions must be intense, play must be intense--there’s something of a daredevil in 8s as they're looking to experience what life has to offer at 110%. it’s ironic that giving into lust is the antithesis of the control raph’s 8 demands he maintains; lust after a person or object is to be under its power, the opposite of what an 8 truly wants.
i’m sure at least some of you are wondering about ‘wrath’. something that might be important to keep in mind, here, is that 8s reach for rage in place of other emotions; not only is rage easy to access, it’s also an intense and overwhelming emotion. we'll talk about this more when we get to leo, but his 1 makes him a member of the 'anger' triad as well. where raph takes any emotion he feels intensely and replaces it with anger, leo will often take his anger and replace it with a less harsh explanation. but again, we'll get to that.
something else i think is interesting to consider are the cardinal sins associated with the other types that 8s are connected to. in raph’s case, it would be his wing, 7, with his stress and security numbers 5 and 2. the other cardinal sins in his main circle would be gluttony, greed, and pride respectively. when it comes to raph, 'gluttony' makes more sense in application than a 9's 'sloth', which contributes to why i disagree with him having a 9 wing.
sooooo, now that we’ve gone over a lot of information about 8s in general and some samplings of where i see an 8 in raph, i wanna look at three specific points in the series to just kinda pick up and turn around in my hands like a little puzzle box. i’m sorry, i know this is long just--AUGH. i could sit here and run characters through an enneagram lens all day, i'm the worst.
city at war
for me, city at war is a fantastic example of an 8 and a 1 colliding. this is also an arc i see discussed frequently, and often those talking about it have an easy time seeing the perspective of one brother but not the other. for complete disclosure, i’ve always been in raph’s court with this one; even as a kid i'm pretty sure i agreed with raph that they should stay out of the fight (but i’m also a 9, and we tend to avoid conflict of any kind however we can).
we’ll be talking about raph’s perspective here, obviously, and we’ll return to this arc in leo’s post to discuss it from his perspective. remember that one of the enneagram's uses as a tool is to grow in compassion for others and allow us to understand why they act and react the way they do.
a big thing to keep in mind when looking at this arc from raph's perspective as an 8 is that we need to look at the last time they dealt with the foot specifically. while there are five episodes between shredder’s supposed death in secret origins' ending (s2ep8) and city at war beginning (s2ep14), it’s important to consider the sheer weight of everything that lead up to this point and the amount of time passed as those events transpired. remember that an 8’s basic desire is to protect themselves--and the people they’ve come to care about--as well as determine their own course in life. the foot completely uprooted all of that for raph.
we’ll say the shredder strikes back (s1ep17) is the starting point. the boys may have faced the shredder for the first time in shredder strikes (s1ep10), but i don’t think they fully understood what the FUCK they were doing. because they’re fifteen year old boys. with weapons. they think they’re invincible. they’re very stupid, and it's a miracle master splinter hasn't developed like six ulcers.
shredder strikes back is a brutal wake up call to the fact that… NO, ACTUALLY, y'all are pretty fragile. this was the closest they’d probably come to having a family member taken from them. like, all things considered, leo should be dead. he was only “returned” to them on the brink of death to rub salt in the wound. and with the 8’s ability to sniff out who has the most power in a room, i doubt this detail was lost on raph. his brother is only still alive because shredder allowed it.
enough time passes for leo to recover, and we’re right back in new york using the fact we’re ‘dead’ to our advantage to take down shredder once and for all. the next three episodes all occur in the same night. but we did it! we’ve defeated shredder--we thought we’d gained control--but, just kidding, dad’s gone and disappeared.
our search for master splinter over the next few hours sends us to space. the next five episodes are desperately trying to get back to earth and their father. the turtles are in space for a few weeks, but only a few hours have passed on earth.
all of secret origins happens in the span of another few hours and ends with the shredder dying once and for all. he's totally dead, you guys. for real this time. no way in hell he survived that. ...foreshadowing is a literary device whe--
for us, that’s eighteen episodes (which if you were watching back in 2003 in the way the episodes were released would have not only been about eighteen weeks minimum, but the waiting period between two seasons as well). as viewers, it feels like a lot of time has passed. because it has. for them? that is a LOT of shit--again--over a relatively short period of time.
for an 8, this has been a ton of shaking around their control over their course in life. it’s been a huge threat to both their own security and that of the few people they hold dear. going from having to avoid their home and hiding away in april’s apartment, to almost losing leo, to almost losing splinter, to being blasted across the galaxy, discovering their ties to the shredder… but now. FINALLY. shredder is dead. they’re free! ...they should be free to once again determine their own course.
i can only imagine raph is eager to find some semblance of control and grounding again. the world has proven itself in many ways to be cruel and uncaring, just like he’d learned to believe. his 5 probably has him in a bit of a choke hold. and now, as the foot and the mob and the dragons are in a turf war, for SOME GODDAMN REASON his brother--who he almost lost--wants to get involved. raph, usually the first into the ring of conflict, slams the brakes on. this isn’t our fight, and we can just let them weaken each other and eat themselves alive. we gain safety by not involving ourselves, we have control again. to throw ourselves into that is risking another loss. returning to the cardinal sins, the 5’s greed/need to protect their resources and their energy, could very much be in full swing here.
8s and 1s are, unfortunately for everyone else involved, both types who unrelentingly believe they’re correct in an argument. and to back down from said argument could mean submitting to a part of their basic fear. raph’s 8 recognizes this as a moment for them to regain control of not only their own lives, but also as an opening to just let potential future enemies use up resources and wear each other out. and leo’s 1, as we’ll get to, refuses to listen to this on the base that it wouldn’t be right to sit back while people are getting hurt because of an imbalance ‘they caused’.
karai showing up in new york to take shredder’s place leading the foot (giving them a leader and direction again would be empowering them) was the final straw for raph. because what does he do? he isolates. fuck this shit: i’m out.
cards on the table? i’m not too keen that the narrative made it seem like leo was ‘right’ and raph was ‘wrong’, especially with casey stating that “the way he was raised, you fix your mistakes”… like… killing the shredder was a mistake. idk. clumsy choice of words on casey's part or mishandled writing, i'm not fond of it. and raph saying he was being an idiot at the end… honey, sweetie, darling, gravy, you were not being a full fledged idiot. you were both right and you were both wrong and you were both idiots; the situation is complicated and they can be both at once ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ gray is a value that exists, and you’re both grounded. equality.
anyway. next topic.
darkness within
this will be shorter than the last one because it’s more of a five minute encounter than a span of three episodes with a history, but i think it’s an interesting thing to look at anyway.
i know that from a meta perspective, raph’s nightmare in darkness within (s3ep14) was more a nod to another incarnation, but the fact his fear of becoming anything remotely like the shredder speaks to how self-aware of his anger he might be at this point in the series (note: this is not me saying ch’rell is also an 8; this is a warped fear that came from raph's subconscious, not a direct ‘prediction’ of things to come).
more in-depth views of the enneagram include the levels of development, which is a scale of one to nine how healthy or unhealthy the type is. at their healthiest, 8s can be described as self-surrendering and heroic. self-reliant and strong. self-confident and leading. but at their unhealthiest? 8s can become ruthless and dictatorial. megalomaniacal and terrorizing. sociopathic and destructive. sounds a lot like our favorite chewed up piece of stale cinnamon gum.
raph is aware that his anger--as well as his need to be strong and in control of his situation--could lead him down an even vaguely similar path. we saw glimpses of that, as i said, as early as episode four of the first season. losing grip and control of his temper and attacking mikey. his worst moment. the foot were barely even part of their lives at that point. that happened during what should have been a mundane little training session between brothers, where there was little to no outside influence. while not the shredder exactly, he is aware he has the potential to become something similar if he allows himself to give in to his anger and fears.
the first half of season four and leo’s… gestures vaguely
i think the last thing i want to talk about is the first half of season four and just generally dealing with leo at HIS worst. specifically cousin sid (s4ep1), i, monster (s4ep5), grudge match (s4ep6), samurai tourist (s4ep13), and scion of the shredder (s4ep15).
in cousin sid raph’s reaction to leo’s shift in attitude is, at first, positive. he goes as far as to jokingly state that karai should stab him more often if it means leo’s going to be less hesitant to fight (think his 7 wing was showing itself in that moment tbh; trying to make a joke out of something he shouldn’t have).
by i, monster, i think he’s started to notice that something’s wrong. he holds the others off as he recognizes that leo's fighting something more than just the rat king.
in grudge match, he starts to confront leo on his shift in attitude only to be interrupted by master splinter. by the time we get to samurai tourist, raph’s had it with this 'new leo'. he goes as far as saying leo's "going mental". mikey shuts this down (and boy, we'll get to that), but it's clear that raph's standing with leo has only gotten more and more tense.
i doubt it was intentional, as the writers focused more on leo’s handling of their final confrontation of the shredder, but… with all due respect to master splinter, i don’t agree with him when he later tells leo that his brothers have healed. i don’t think they’re in the unhealthy zone as deep as leo is, but given raph’s more negative and almost accusatory approach to leo’s state, i can’t help but tilt my head and see his 5’s influence beginning to color his perception. he’s having a hard time connecting. digging his heels in, becoming uncompromising. his 2 is hidden away and preventing him from showing vulnerability or gentleness toward leo's state. an 8’s antagonism can lead to self-sabotage when it comes to relationships, and leo’s reacting differently to raph’s attitude or not reacting at all. leo’s sudden change in attitude paired with any healing raph has left to do has likely raised his walls in a place he thought he was safe in. his 8, which is so focused on protecting himself, no longer feels like it has any control over the situation--he doesn’t know how leo’s going to act, how receptive leo will be to his own behavior, or even what to do to get leo “back”. and, obviously, leo’s worsening state is doing nothing to help any of this. raph's falling toward rejecting leo first so leo doesn’t have the chance to reject him. playing into that fear of dependency by continuing to push leo further away from him before leo has the chance to do the damage himself.
we see in scion of the shredder that he hasn’t completely given up; playing into his 7, mikey makes a coo-coo motion at his head in reference to leo and raph promptly smacks him for it. i think this says a few things: that raph took what mikey said in samurai tourist to heart and, because of that, he’s now at least trying to be more nuanced about leo’s state, verses basically having said the same thing mikey just did two episodes back… even if it might be ‘too late’ for that considering leo’s already had his worst moment and gone to japan.
when we roll around to prodigal son (s4ep16), raph’s likely on a big emotional ride over here. some of this i have to point at rushed writing and also the general vibe of early 2000s media, but some of it can also be directed at raph’s 8. we see him very briefly express “””weakness””” when leo assures him that the rest of the family is okay (he braces his hands on his knees), but upon returning to the reservoir station all the walls are right back up and he just walks right past don, who’s relieved to see him, and, boom, he’s right back on the attack--angry that the foot destroyed their home. defenses up. i’m not relieved, i was never worried, i was never scared, i’m just MAD.
conclusion
as mentioned in part 1, the two books i referenced and heavily pulled from in the more enneagram-focused sections of this project (the parts where the enneagram itself is explained rather than how it applies to the turtles) were:
the wisdom of the enneagram by don richard riso & russ hudson
the road back to you by ian morgan cron & suzanne stabile
gonna be real with you, lads, i have no idea how to properly close this out, i just looked at the page number and word count and muttered to myself "jesus christ; girl, shut up".
as i said at the start of this post, if i have anything to add/more observations regarding raph's 8 in the series i'll link them here as addendums.
for now, we're going to stay in the instinct triad and move over to leo. and from leo, we'll go to don because they both have a foot in the feeling/heart triad.
see you in the next one and, if you read all this, here's a platter of warm cookies of your favorite choice. and your favorite drink to wash it down. you're the realest.

Understanding Type 6
An intro to enneagram 6
Tumblr media
Katniss Everdeen (Hunger Games) ISTP 6w5 sx/sp
Core Desire- They desire to feel supported and feeling safe emotionally.
Vice (Fear)- A sense of insecurity of others and a general mistrust from others.
Fixation (Cowardice)- They have a tendency to be passive to action and expect others to take action instead of themselves.
Wings
6w5 (The Guardian)- With the w5 this type 6 will be more introverted and focused on data and information. They deal with their fear through what they acknowledge as “logical” and “factual”.  Will focus on the “wrongness” of the outside world not trusting what others might say. They have a need to look for what's right and truthful. They have are natural  skeptics over structures of any kind. Will either abide by this structures or fully rebel against them. Can be seen as more relatable than the other head types. Tendency to be socially introverted.
6w7 (The Companion)- Unlike the 6w5 who focuses their anxiety and fear into themselves the 6w7 externalizes this through fun and exploration. They will be more outgoing and social than the 6w5. They hide their sense of paranoia unlike the 6w5.  While the 6w5 hides in paranoia and only trust themselves the 6w7 does the complete opposite and try to calm down their paranoia and fear through eternal work and connecting with others.  Will be more assertive than the 6w5.
Triads- Head (5-6-7)
They don't want move to far from the margins of society and due to them being an attachment type they will use others as reference for their fear and anxiety.
Harmonic Triad- Reactive (4-6-8)
They tend to react emotionally to things when the things they view as right are challenged I any capacity.
Hornevian Triad- Super Ego (1-2-6)
Will try and create community due to the believe of power in groups.
Object Relations- Attachment (3-6-9)
They have a need to create a sense of community and groups in order to support themselves and others to find a support. Due to them being attachment types+Super ego types they will have a strong sense of camaraderie
Subtypes
Social (so)- The social six will look for external structures to follow and be a part of. This subtype will tie themselves to any form of guideline in order to find stability. they can either be on the passive rule following end or the other extreme where they reveal in the need for a cause they believe in. Due to their need to follow the rules of the select group they chose they can ignore their emotional side. They can look like 1s or 3s due to their dutifulness and high level of responsibility.
Ex- Sokka (ATLA) ESTJ 6w7 so/sp , Leon Kennedy (Resident Evil) ISFP 6w7 so/sp and Rei Ayanami (NGE) ISTJ 6w5 so/sp
Tumblr media
Self-Preservation (sp)- The self preservation type 6 will look for community in orders unlike the social 6 who looks for it in systems the sp 6 will look for it in interpersonal relationships. They can be seen as warm, kind and friendly.  Due to this they tend to ignore their anger and repress in order to create this connections and groups. They deal with their fear through being cautious. They are the most anxious and fearful than the other two subtypes. Possibly will look like a E1 or E2.
Ex-Bonnie Bennet (TVD) INFJ 6w5 sp/so , Wirt (OTGW) INFP 6w5 sp/so and  Mikasa Ackerman (Attack on Titan) ISTJ 6w5 sp/sx
Tumblr media
Sexual (sx)- As the counter type of 6 this subtypes deny the idea or structures and social group they will be more introverted. However they are still both an attachment type and interpersonal subtype meaning that they still crave the partnership of this type. They hide their fear through strength and acts of bravery. However in the fore front of their mind they care about creating a connection with someone. Unlike the other sixes who care about due process this six will ignore them and go forward. They can look like E8s due to their relentless pursuit.
Ex- Amicia de Rune (A plague Tale) ISFJ 6w7 sx/so, Joel Miller (TLOU) ISTJ 6w5 sx/sp and Killua (HunterXHunter) INTP 6w5 sx/sp
Tumblr media
Moves (Positive and Negative)
Moves to 3
Positive-  They no longer have much fear In them and will chase after the goals they have set without any fear
Negative- Constantly lying and avoids things due to being busy and neglects their goals.
Moves to 9
Positive- No longer obsessed with their fear they become more relaxed and in tune with others
Negative- Turns to numbness and ignores reality.

PICK-A-PIC reading: A Message For You (TIMELESS)
You know what to do~ pick one of these photos and just scroll down for your reading! ^^
1st half of your reading will be about your current situation, just a little something for you to confirm if the reading is indeed for you. The second half will be the message.

Pile 1
Tumblr media
1st Half: 8 of Pentacles, Justice, 3 of Swords
There is this sort of injustice that you keep trying to change and turn around. For some of you this is more about finances or family issues, and it just makes you feel like life is so unfair to you. It's like no matter how hard you work to turn this situation around, you just can't seem to succeed. First thing you need to know is that this situation is very Karmic, and it will definitely get better than this, even though it feels at the moment like it's impossible to get through this.
2nd Half: The High Priestess, Queen of Pentacles, 10 of Pentacles
First thing I got was, "look at the bigger picture; maybe you're missing something because you're so focused on the small things". I also have a feeling that your mind tends to make things bigger than they seem. I feel like there's just sooo much that is yet to be revealed to you right now? But behind the curtains there's nothing but abundance for you. Really, that's all I'm seeing here. This message is not exactly an advice, but a reassurance that you'll get through this. It may be a slow process, but you will see this through, and when you do, you'll realise it's sooo worth it. Perhaps the advice is just to persevere and endure. But no matter what, abundance and everything you wished for are waiting for you on the other end.
~~~
Pile 2
Tumblr media
1st Half: 3 of Swords, 8 of Pentacles, Justice
You have GOT to be kidding me- these are the same cards my pile 1s got, only in different order... :O wtf... The message is still different, though, I can feel it. But still... What the heck.
Okay, anyways. I feel like this pile is working so hard for something that doesn't really align with them anymore. You're so drained of failing at this, but have you asked yourself if this is still what you really want? Because sometimes the reasons things don't work is just because they're not meant to work. You definitely need a little shake up in your life, especially in your mindset. This feels like holding on to something so tightly just because you've been doing so for years, and letting go of it would make you feel like you wasted your time. Try to zoom out, see the bigger picture. While this might not be for you, there surely are lessons that this taught you. Maybe it's not about seeing this through all along, but just picking up lessons along the way. Lessons you'll need once you've decided yo go for the real deal.
2nd Half: Ace of Wands, The Devil, Queen of Cups
Yeah, you're definitely being nudged onto a new path, a new beginning. Because this is Wands, I assume for most of you this is a creative pursuit? But ultimately this just feels like something that will make you feel so exhilarated again. After long years of forced efforts into something that always failed, you're finally being met by something that will make you feel excited and inspired and motivated, and you won't have to force it. It will make you feel so emotionally fulfilled, and possibly help you get in touch with your Divine Feminine energy, or maybe this can be a doorway for you to meet a maternal figure who will be there for you always to lean on. The purpose of this current thing you've been working on is just to teach you something, or maybe detach you from a bad habit. The Devil can also be saying that your attachment to this thing is becoming unhealthy and that's mainly why it's time to explore new stuff.
~~~
Pile 3
Tumblr media
1st Half: 9 of Pentacles, 7 of Pentacles, 10 of Cups
You're definitely somewhere stable and full of abundance right now, and honestly (because the bottom of the deck is 10 of Swords) I feel like you've earned it. But still, there's a part of you or of your life that just feels out of place. Like I think of it as that one dimmed spot in a place that's all lit up. These days you probably find yourself asking what else is there to be done? Or to be achieved? You've earned this stability but because you're used to struggles, this stability sometimes feel boring to you. Also, I feel like you're the type to associate your worth with your accomplishments, so now that it seems to you you've nothing left to work towards to, you feel uneasy. Perhaps this well-deserved resting period comes off to you as stagnation.
That's what I see in terms of your current background/situation.
2nd Half: 10 of Pentacles, The High Priestess, Queen of Pentacles
You have got to be kidding right now like seriously what the heck- THESE ARE THE SAME CARDS I PULLED FOR MY PILE 1'S SECOND HALF... And if you saw my Pile 2 reading, the cards I pulled for their 1st half of the reading were also the same as pile 1's 1st half... 🥲 What the heck is this honestly no one can really make this sh!t up seriously. Because it's not like I don't shuffle the cards!
Anyways.
Try to warm up more to your situation right now. As I've said, you've earned this stability and this abundance. Don't worry because there's definitely something else for you to accomplish; there's a reason why you still feel sort of incomplete despite what you've achieved. But don't rush it. Bask in this stability, because you might need to remember how it feels to get through your next journey, which I think will be more of a spiritual awakening or ascension. You've achieved material stability, and when it's time you'll be sent off to achieve spiritual completion as well, but that time isn't now. So just try to enjoy what you have at the moment. You've literally earned it!!!
That's all I'm seeing for everyone. Thank you for reading my...reading. 😆 But seriously, thank you for taking your time to read everything! See you again!

Misconceptions About Type 1
Type 1 is likely one of the more uncommon types within the enneagram system.  We often joke of the overtypings of 5s and 4s and proceed to forget that type 1 is also strongly overtyped.  The fact is that few if any enneagram authors were of the type 1 personality type, therefore much of what is written about the type is lacking this first person experience associated with the type.  This becomes very obvious in descriptions of 1 which almost entirely ignore 1s connection to the body triad and, at times, portray the type as if it were of the head triad.  When learning the enneagram, it becomes especially important to understand this difficulty and begin to reconceptualize our understanding of type 1 in particular.
1) Type one is "insert head type description here": Many descriptions portray 1 almost as though it were a head type rather than a gut type, which leads to a lot of 6s and probably even 5s mistyping as such. While 1s can be cautious, worrisome, cerebral and even theoretical/thoughtful, the core of the gut center revolves around instinct and body orientation.  Anger and frustration for the 1 is often felt intensely and in the body sense.  One of the best self descriptions I’ve heard from a 1 about this experience was the comparison of the self to a tuning fork, with “wrong” being identified as a dissonance between the self and reality.  While 1s sense of ideality as well as their sense of right/correct or wrong/incorrect can be intensely logical, have solid reasoning, and be thought through in great detail, the 1s sense of ideality does not stem from the mind, but from the body and that either intuitive or sensational sense of ideality and non-ideality.  This type is most often incredibly decisive and trusting of it's sense of directionality unlike the head types who will bolster their sense of judgement through impulse, intense research, external affirmation, or other means because the core of type 1 is not a distrust of internal guidance. The type literally only has possibility for positive outlook wings as well as a strong line to 7, a positive outlook type.  This manifests as this incredible sense of self trust in their own ideas and ability to assert judgement and provides a driving force for action and movement since, despite cynisism or pessimism, there is often assumption that ideality is something that can be reached for or even obtained.  This is the strongest distinguishing factor between 1 and other types consistently mistyped as 1.
It should be clarified further that “body sense” does not imply that all 1s need to be “sensing” types in the mbti sense or are remotely connected to their body in the physical or traditional sense.  Ideality can be abstracted in the intuitive sense, body sensations can be entirely filtered through an abstract lens in the sense that a 1 may not be able to describe it as it exists physically, etc.  The distinction must be made that the gut triad in general comes with this arrogant “I just know” sort of mentality that distinguishes it from the heart and head triads.
2) Type one represses anger and is often inclined to come across as composed: It is not uncommon for 1s style of anger to be misinterpreted as repressed, especially considering how uncommon this type actually is.  Textually, it can be difficult to find a word that is distinctly fitting for their style of anger. While 1 often prioritizes objective and clear thought, this types vice is still wrath. Perhaps this anger and rage may be internally justified as something that the 1 does not consider rage (ie. nitpicking, organizing, criticism, an explanation etc) or the 1 may even truly believe they are as cool headed and emotionally detached as many suspect themselves to be, however the 1's wrath is externally oriented and palpable. Wrath exclusively directed at the self, but not caught by others or a type that only manifests as being internally frustrated or critical of others alongside little to no external expression is a 9 thing. Repressing anger to maintain a clearheaded, objective stance is also more of a 9, 6, or even 3 trait rather than a trait that is primarily 1. 1 type anger is controlled, directional, and centered (rather than diffused and internally brewed as in the 9 or ranged, comfortably expressed, and impact focused as in the 8). This even applies to 1w9, who's sense of wrath may be oriented towards reducing discomfort or takes on the justification as being peace/balance seeking but is not as quiet or remotely hidden as some often expect it to be.
 3) Type 1 is rigid and Rule Abiding: They are, but to their own sense of structure, not necessarily external structures. 1 has a strong vision of how the world should be and what is lacking. The archetype of the perfect student who enforces the rules or the person dedicated to a strong moral system or "the goody two shoes" is 90% of the time a 3 or 6 at their core because both of these stances are strongly tied to pre-established systems and appeal to the attachment orientation. 1 at it's core is frustration and dissatisfaction. 1 isn't necessarily breaking rules and can have moral stances that connect to culture and common standards, but there is a strong connection to the body and impulse sense of anger and frustration rather than the more traditional focus on established systems and rules.  1 is far more often the generator of rules and standards rather than the follower of them.
4) The Core Fear of 1 is Being a Bad Person: While this is not necessarily incorrect, the way this is framed does not provide the necessary context that, once again, this is not really expectation based and that “bad” is not necessarily relating to morality.  You can have traditionally “evil” 1s who embrace the concept of being absolutely awful or, more commonly, are unaware of the effects of their behavior on others or hypocrisy because, once again, all of this self directed and critical behavior is a felt sense.  1 moves in the direction of it’s compass, that compass does not have to be remotely moral in the traditional sense.

So i went to pbd and typed tecchou cause ppl are so wrong abt him. hes clearly sp/sx 9w1 so wrote a defense for it:
i dont understand why so/sx is his most voted instinctual variant. in what universe would he be sp blind. i understand that hes disregard his safety for a mission/comrades but that stems from his sx imo. hes shown behaviours of a sp. he literally eats on missions and has done push ups in a meeting. he shows little care for so related things like trends and gatherings. his only percieved community is the hunting dogs which can be taken more as an sx thing than so. him caring for the civilians stem from his sx as he has a passion for his justice philosophy. while caring for others is an so thing he doesnt care much for others opinions on him as far as we can see. he doesnt care to change things others find odd and hes even blind to a lot of social cues so how would he be so? even if he shows many signs of being and so making him sp blind when hes clearly an sp9 just doesnt make sense.
also just because he values justice doesnt make him a 1. i think hes a 9w1 with a strong wing cause unlike a 1 hes been seen much more willing to take a break from his pursuit to justice (as seen in sleeping after the fight with kenji). 1s are also much louder about their values than 9s. 9s, like tecchou, will preach there values but not push them to the point of an argument esp to those close to them. while tecchou always preaches justice, he doesnt force his view of the world onto others harshly and esp not to jouno who shows a lot of resistance to it because they are close. he also, unlike 1s and more like 9s, disregards his rigid right and wrong to fight kenji because jouno disappeared. jouno's disappearance is a disruption to his peace (as unpeaceful as life in the hunting dogs can get) because its out of comfort to not have his partner there. he would much rather disregard his principles than have something changed. 1s often resist their instincts to stick to their principles and be “good and righteous” but tecchou did not. it seems like his principles might be something caused by past trauma or something taught to him so maybe to him thats all he has ever believed/the only way to stop trauma from happening again so rather than realigning his world view which could be wrong (what a 1 might do) which would disrupt his inner peace, he chooses to leave it unchanged.
he also seems very hard to type enneagram wise as theres a lot of debate which is such a 9 thing since its the crown of the enneagram. this means 9s can have a lot of the qualities of other enneagrams while still being a 9. he can also be extremely simple minded. many 9s tend to choose the simplest/easiest option to maintain their stasis of peace. tecchou has demonstrated that by always taking the “fastest way” by cutting down the trees to fighting kenji. a 1 would take the longer way if it meant doing the right thing but tecchou rarely stops to consider whether his decisions are the right thing to do outside of justice. this same justice view is also like the 9s rose tinted glasses. to him the world is simple. black and white with him being the thing able to keep it that way, good rewarded and evil punished. but he also shows against that in a very 9 “the world is good way” when it comes to other hunting dog members, especially jouno and this is sort of shown when he was going to agree to kenji at first. he sees the world as good so as to not be upset/have his mindset changed which is a very 9 thing.

TBC #6-11 9-13 May 2023
I am jetlagged and don't have the time or the brain to write up anything beyond some bullet points, so here goes:
I spent almost as much time at Dial Arch as I did in the show. This is not a bad thing, especially when there are friendly British fans and friendly performers and crew about. Imperial pints, yay! UK spirits measures, boo.
The VIP was worth doing once. Subtle references to the Eleusinian Mysteries on the kykeon bottle, nice. I don't know what the spec is but basically it was a drink for people who don't like whisky--mostly pineapple and other fruit flavors, presumably with some Dewar's in there somewhere. The museum/hallway scenes with Yilin and Sam put some nice flourishes on the Persephone storyline.
The three high points of my shows were these: 1) a Full Persephone with Lily, managing both X:1s and the Elysium coda. 2) a new-to-me Hades 1:1 with Sam, which brought new meaning to the word "underworld." 3) Fania bouncing back and forth between queen of Troy and queen of Mycenae.
Other things I knew that I'd enjoy, and did: seeing Ingrid on as Cassandra and the Watchman. Spending a loop in Peep with Lily and Isaac (I still can't get that stack-of-drawings trick to work, though).
New discoveries for me this time included a bunch of scenes that I hadn't witnessed before, and performers I'd never followed before. Ally Clarke as Artemis, holy smokes, and as Luba. Brenda Lee Grech as Macaria, ditto. Omar Gordon as Luba and then Agamemnon (with Fania/Clytemnestra!).
Thanks to FOH for taking pity on five of us huddled under two tiny umbrellas during a sudden downpour, and letting us into the lobby early.
I think I'm a real connoisseur of the blinding / Troy finale now, although I can't quite articulate the difference between when it works for me and when it really REALLY works for me. It's almost always moving and in fact more of the scenes were moving to me this time--I think knowing the space and the rhythms better meant that I could just get swept up into the narrative more easily. So I was tearing up at scenes both familiar and not. The bit where the Watchman mournfully takes up Iphigenia's red cape and holds it up to a rope as if it were a sail--sob.
There were some other 1:1s and walkouts and such, which don't need enumerating. All of them gifts.
I finally found the Gallow Green postcard and the owl bedroom! The end.

Umineko EP4. Replay Part 1
Certainly not her genes, Kryie, also Rudolf sees through Kyrie in that even when she's talking friendly about Asumu she's burning with jealousy. Certainly was never a healthy dynamic in any case.
Tumblr media
The talk of miracles here is so interesting and I will probably talk about it in more detail later. Rika's belief in a miracle is what allowed her to break through her dead-end fate. Ange's belief in a miracle is what is slowly destroying her life. I don't think either framing is entirely right or wrong, and unlike others, I don't see Umineko as a sort of response/rebuttal to Higurashi as much as something that expands on its themes, but still... it's really interesting to think about.
Tumblr media
You can tell that R07 has been in kind of damage control mode for Beatrice since the end of ep3 lol. He really needs to hammer it isn't as black and white as you might think and she isn't just an evil monster who tricked Battler for fun.
Tumblr media
This is a really funny scene too, by the way.
Tumblr media
Battler's is, as Beato says, in a lot better state than last time shit like this happened. I think he got the general gist that Beato wasn't acting 100% and that there is more to what is going on than meets the eye.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ange's right. Battler is starting to try and seriously understand Beatrice's heart but that's opposed to Ange's purposes, which are for him to completely trample on her heart as soon as possible so she can get Battler back.
Tumblr media
You can tell Ane's view of others is really warped by now, it's basically a less over-the-top version of Erika. Sure if you never trust anyone you will never get tricked but you will never build genuine relations either...
Tumblr media
This is in complete opposition to how Satoko entered the school in GouSotsu, so I guess the schools work differently across... universes or whatever it is you would call this.
Tumblr media
Well... considering the events of this chapter where she continuously gets attempted to get murdered by her family I can't really blame her for strongarming Ange's family....
Tumblr media
The game is pretty clear the abuse didn't take long to start.... it's easy to take a more sympathetic reading of Eva later but it is clear she bears responsibility for attempting to take care of a child she was in no way emotionally capable of doing at the time.
Tumblr media
Ha.... the way Maria got mocked at her school but she didn't get it and saw it as genuine praise really makes me think she has autism... I remember at school laughing along at jokes I didn't get until I finally got that the joke was disparaging me. The game doesn't show this as an entirely negative thing, though... after all she is able to create 1s from 0s. Also, I am not disparaging Ange in any way but it shows the level of her isolation that the closest image to best friend she can conjure in her head is the girl she hung out with once a year on a family conference.
Tumblr media
I have never heard of enchilada cheesecakes before and now I want to try them out.
Tumblr media
....uh huh Rosa....
Tumblr media
It's no surprise Ange latched on to the diary.... she does the same magic Maria does towards Rosa to Rudolf. "He sometimes came home at my birthday so he loved me a lot" aka he couldn't be bothered to even be at my birthday usually.
Tumblr media
Haha.... this scene is so sad to read.... Rosa is constantly embarrassed of Maria even in his idealized version of the scene.
Tumblr media
Huh... I wonder if this kind of bullying is common for autistic children? This is exactly word for word what was done to me in school.
Tumblr media
This is also a common thing for abused people to think, I used to think I had to stay in abusive relationships because if I didn't someone else would get abused. I am sometimes kind of in awe about how R07 can accurately represent many kinds of situations.
Tumblr media
It's not really sustainable in the long term for Maria, though. She can pretend she isn't sad and that she's fine all she wants but in the end, she chose the Golden Land over living. You can't exactly blame Maria for her thinking like this, though, she's just a 9-year-old making the best of an awful situation.
Tumblr media
In other words, "I am glad I can neglect my daughter now that she has a stuffed toy I bought at a supermarket to keep her company instead of me"
Tumblr media
Rosa, you set way too many fucking rules for someone that can't even be bothered to get home.
Tumblr media
Maria knows perfectly that her mom considers her an embarrassment, huh.....
Tumblr media
Man, Ange is so fucking depressed.... almost every line she says has a hint of extreme sadness behind it....
Tumblr media
He uh.... didn't ask that Maria.... you can really tell she's extremely lonely.
Tumblr media
Okonogi shows up and immediately wants Ange to do something that would kill her, lmfao.
Tumblr media
Okonogi hits the mark right on the head but mixes up "Yasu" and "Eva" which is pretty interesting!
Tumblr media
Of course, the one who actually had that ring was Yasu and not Kinzo at the time, so Okonogi's theory came from false assumptions.
Tumblr media
I had.... completely forgotten that Okonogi of all people was the one to introduce the concept that without love, it can't be seen... haha I was very shocked here. Okonogi is also pretty much 100% right here, esp wrt Ange being unequipped to find the truth as she is.
Tumblr media
An impressive resume would be a shame if you would get beaten and tortured by a nine-year-old girl.
Tumblr media
Ange's already making hints about the fact it's really a suicide plan more than anything, Beatrice and Ange parallels are bigger later on but the fact they both had elaborate suicide plans with Rokkenjima is interesting to me...

Hey, it's been a couple of years since I've last been on tumblr and been in the MBTI sphere. It's nice to see you still active! Last I saw, your description said 8w9. I was wondering what sparked the decision/realization that you're a 9w8 instead. If there's already a post about this, I'll gladly read it, but I wasn't able to find it. Was it slow and gradual & always a consideration, or was there one thing that really made you rethink? Thanks!
I've wrote a short post about it before but it's already a few years old already and buried beneath other crap i guess. I can't recapitulate the exact moment of realization. But in hindsight there were a few misconceptions that lead to the mistyping in the first place and lifting these while simultaneously becoming more honest about myself then lead to "what if i'm 9 after all??" pondering first and then "oh shit i -am- a 9" second. (so yeah more gradual and not one big eureka-moment)
underestimating 9s' and 1s' anger. there are certain themes that somehow only get attributed to one type in a triad even though they are transparent in the other two types as well. for example only 3s being called out of vanity, but missing out on the super obvious vanity of 2s and 4s. or only 6s being seen as paranoid nervous wracks while 5s and 7s are actually equally paranoid. likewise only 8s get the attribute of "the angry type" when 1s and 9s are actually on the same level.
being more aware about lesser influences; the wing being more obvious to yourself than the core. similar to how we are usually more aware of our tert and inf functions because they are still "newer" to us and we haven't become so accustomed and blind to them yet.
9s being about "harmony and avoiding conflict". the majority of 9 descriptions have a soc Fe spin to them and just recently I've been told that there are still plenty people out there who think IxFPs can't be 9s because Fi is too selfish to be a 9?? like, where is that idea coming from? 9s got to be the misunderstood type next to 2s because many people fail to see obvious selfishness in accommodating behaviour. (i think i made several posts going in detail about that topic)
making excuses for (dis)integration lines not fitting. really when it comes to that topic i should have used occam's razor but instead i was needlessly overcomplicating things. i should have realized sooner that i go into 6-mode during stress is not because "well i'm a Si-dom and Si + inf Ne mimics 6-stereotypes :)"
delusional idolization. a bit like "oh wow 9s are great, I love 9s, there is no possible way I could be as cool as one ;)". not much to say about that lol.
most of these are beginner mistakes and if you look back like 95% of people on typology tumblr made them. from all the "8s" you had back then only Sarah survived as the one true 8w7 (although she got her instinct wrong and is actually a sx/so and not a sx/sp), everyone else turned out to be either a 1, 3 or 9.

Hi Charity, since it is my last chance, I thought about asking you a question: do you have any advice for an enneagram 1 (isfj sp/so) woman in her 30s on how to be a better person and have a better life in general? (I know, it is a very 1 question :-D)
And, more specifically, on how to deal with my 9 mother who thinks that if you ignore a problem long enough the problem will just go away by itself?
I will really miss your answers and wisdom, I'm glad I have your book and blog to rely on! I wish a good and peaceful day!
Most of my advice will center around what you need as a 1 -- which is to learn to separate your super-ego inner voice (that relentless critic who is always hammering you to do the 'right' thing and be 'perfect' and telling you how you 'should' be) from your own voice. What I mean to say is, don't do things only because you feel as if you 'should' out of a misguided sense of duty. 1s tend to repress themselves, deny their own desires, and then resent others who are 'having fun' while they feel as if they 'ought' to just work, or study, or be a good parent. Allow yourself to have fun, allow yourself to say no.
I grew up with a 1, and even though she knows she's a 1, it's still hard for her to not to treat her own self as a 1. When she should relax her boundaries and cut herself slack, she comes down hard on herself and enforces more personal rules. For example, she was "spending too much time on YouTube," so she decided to restrict herself to only once a week for an hour. I told her, "That's the wrong approach. You need to allow yourself to 'waste time' if it's what you WANT to do, without feeling guilty about it. There's no reason you can't watch YouTube. Watch it whenever you damn well please."
She was shocked, but then she thought about it and realized I was right -- you can't fix yourself as a 1, by being a 1. You have to fix yourself by relaxing the inner hounding, and learning to ask -- do I want to do this? is this mine to do? and realizing that you can say no to things and choose not to do them, without it making you a bad person. I would also suggest you make space for your own anger -- for you to admit to it, own it, and process it, rather than hanging on to it, or feeling as if it is "righteous," and any negative feelings that are not "righteous" need to be suppressed. All emotions are okay -- this is what your line to 4 can teach you: to be at home with ALL of your feelings, even the "bad" ones."
Learn to use your 4 line to teach you about your feelings and get in deeper touch with your true desires, and your 7 line to learn how to let things go and have more fun. I was so proud of Marie Kondo recently when I read that as an sp1, she is learning to use her 7 line -- she confessed that keeping her house tidy is no longer her priority; instead, it's to have fun with and enjoy her children. Good for her!
Regarding 9s. 9s and 1s are often in conflict because as competency types, 1s usually want to handle things immediately and efficiently, but 9s procrastinate and avoid the things that give them discomfort. The thing to remember about 9s is that they can easily feel overwhelmed and unsure of where to start, and they procrastinate and find menial tasks to do that help them feel "busy" when they should be doing something else that gives them anxiety. You can help a 9 a lot by telling them in advance about what you want to discus or resolve, and inviting them to bring ideas to the table. For example, a 9 I know wants to move in two years, but there's a lot of stuff that needs to happen first, and I know she will leave it all to the last minute. I intend to help her make progress by saying, "I'd like to help you with X, what do you think we should work on first?" Maybe with your mom, volunteering assistance and then leaving a choice up to her might be a non-threatening approach, because the 9 still feels as if they have some power in the situation.
It's important not to shame them or push them around or force them into action -- not only will they hate you, they will react with passive aggression, slowing down, digging in their heels, or refusing to budge so you need to learn tact and how to offer them opportunities rather than get impatient and to work on their time scheme.

ATEEZ Jongho Enneagram
- E1, sp/sx 1w9, 136 -
An in depth analysis of an idol's enneagram. Based on my opinion and observations. Not an expert. May change later.
Tumblr media
Core: 1
Triads: Gut/Instinct/Anger, Competency, Compliant, Frustration
Motive: Do and be right, be a good person
Fear: Doing and being bad/harmful
Type 1s strive for perfection in their lives - in every decision they make, the actions they take, and general existence, they want to be correct and good enough for themselves and others.
Jongho is the most reserved out of everyone in the group. He is not one to overreact, but he is not passive either. Jongho's energy is not overwhelming - he tends to deal with situations in a calm manner. Jongho is very self controlled. He's very observant and detail oriented, which is common of the 1 core. Being perfectionistic and all, nothing can be out of place for them (e.g him catching Woo gaming in his recording message to him for his bday. Also very eagle eyed during Salary Lupin).
He's also determined to do things, to achieve his goals no matter what stands in his way. He trained for a long time, even when he was told his voice wasn't great and should not sing - he didn't let that stop him though and continued to work on his voice until it was deemed good. Enneagram 1s aren't the type to give up easily, especially when it comes to their passions. If needed, they will just keep improving on themselves and their skills (1s are very big on improvement) - which Jongho did. He seems to seek improvement in many areas of his life in order to be seen as good enough. Enneagram 1s are quite an ambitious type, which Jongho is.
Wing: 1w9
Wings act as a complement to the core.
Both 1 and 9 are from the gut/anger triad, the difference being that 9 does not acknowledge their anger like a 1. 9 tends to be more passive so having a 9 wing calms the repressive 1 core.
While Jongho likes to have some control of situations to a degree, he doesn't actively seek out for it. He's not very authoritative, but he is comfortable when put in such a position (e.g Salary Lupin ep where he was the boss of everyone in their office roleplay. He seemed like a natural in that role). He doesn't seem like an argumentative person in general and knows when to back down (I forgot what he said to Hongjoong exactly but it appeared to be a bit out of line, which upset Hongjoong a little. That was the first and only time I ever saw Jongho be genuinely scared lol).
When there is conflict, he seems to be able to handle it nicely (1 core needing to fix issues and 9 wanting harmony). E.g the time Wooyoung and San seemed to have a fight during an older idol radio ep and Jongho questioned it directly if they were fighting. And he made them work together because he didn't like to see them fight.
Subtype: Sp/sx
Subtypes show our focus in life.
Sp (self preservation): Personal needs, security
Sx (sexual/one-on-one): intensity, deep connection
As self preservation types are focused on practical needs (sleep, food, finances, etc), Jongho puts those needs as his highest priority. With Wooyoung calling him a monster of capitalism and Jongho himself admitting he's capitalistic (along with the other times he asked members to just send him money as his birthday present or as a joke), Jongho is most definitely an sp dom.
Since this subtype is the most repressive of their anger, sp 1s will try to turn their anger into something more productive or will be more subtle about it. Jongho's never really had an angry outburst or be very aggressive in general. This subtype likes to be prepared for situations since they often worry a lot. They have to be secure in all aspects of their life.
Sx 1 subtype is also very self controlled about their anger. This subtype is more of a reformer rather than a perfectionist of themselves. So will still be expressive of anger when he gets frustrated/disappointed when others aren't acting accordingly.
Tritype: 136
Tritype is formed up of one's dominant type from each center of intelligence (heart, head, gut)
- Heart type: 3 -
Heart center focuses on self worth and shame.
Type 3 tends to believe their self worth comes from their level of success and achievements. Driven to succeed and be the best singer he can be, this is most likely his heart type. 3's ambition adds more to his already hardworking 1 core.
- Head type: 6 -
Head center focuses on dealing with fear and anxiety.
Having a 6 fix can give him a bit of anxiety, which sp 1's already have. To counter this, Jongho likes to keep himself busy (136 in general can be quite a workaholic). 1 and 6 are very rule abiding and adhere to norms/standards, e.g Hongjoong saying Jongho doesn't forget he's the maknae - they just forget they're older than him, which honestly explains why Jongho seems more mature or "normal" compared to them.
- Stems -
How types connect to each other
1-3: Competency, perfectionistic, efficient, repressive
3-6: Attachment, adaptable, external validation
1-6: Compliant, moralistic, prefers structure, detail oriented

Discography Tag
Rules: pick an artist or a band and share your favorite song from each of their albums, then tag some mutuals!
Okay, @onepintobean you asked for it!
YES, I AM DOING RUSH. Obviously.
me, whenever I’m about to do something like this that’s music related: Rush isn’t even my favorite anymore! It’s just the discography I’m most familiar with!
me, after doing something like this and listening to a bunch of Rush as a result: God, I love Rush so much. They’re the best. Unparalleled in all of history. A+ 👏
Rush (1974): Finding My Way. This one was hard, but only because I don’t like any of the songs much. I mean, no Neil? Come on!
Fly By Night (1975): Beneath, Between, Behind. Also hard, also because I’m not crazy about any of it. They had just hired Neil and just realized he’d be more willing to write lyrics than they were, and they just hadn’t found themselves yet.
Caress of Steel (1975): The Fountain of Lamneth. NOW they’re finding themselves! I love this song so much.
2112 (1976): 2112. Classic. I talk about it a little more when I talk about  Vapor Trails.
A Farewell to Kings (1977): Cygnus X-1, Book I. I actually always forget which song the Cygnus X-1s are until I start listening to them, especially the first one. But as soon as I start playing them I’m like---Hell yeah.
Hemispheres (1978): Cygnus X-1, Book II---Hell yeah.
Permanent Waves (1980): Natural Science. I think it’s sort of interesting how their more conceptual songs (the extra long ones with several movements etc.) become VERY MUCH not the standard ‘70s prog rock concept song/album like as soon as they crossed into the ‘80s. This song is over 9 minutes long, but it’s nothing like the long ones which pervade the previous albums and tended to tell a literal story which is also a metaphor or exploration of something else (more like operas), whereas this is more of a journey through ideas and feelings (more like a traditional rock song)(although still overtly a metaphor). This is one of my favorite Rush songs, and, when pressed, usually the one I’ll say IS my favorite, though my favorite often changes, and is often whichever one I’m listening to at the moment.
Moving Pictures (1981): Vitals Signs. I’ve just always really loved this song. It’s essentially about change being basically the only thing that life CAN do, to stop changing is to stop living, which seems like one of those things where I’m usually like… well duh, but for some reason it’s very meaningful for me in this song. “A tired mind becomes a shapeshifter” has been one of those lyrics that has really stuck in my head since the very first time I heard it, although I’ve never been entirely sure why.
Signals (1982): The Weapon. I think maybe Neil Peart is just especially good at saying pretty obvious things in a way that really resonates with me.
Grace Under Pressure (1984): Distant Early Warning. When I’m singing songs to my kids I’m like, “can I sing this one?” and they’re like, “it’s not sad, is it?” and I say “it’s about the potential of nuclear war between the US and Russia, from the perspective of someone in Canada, which is right between the two countries…” and they say “okay, that’s fine.” And I’m like… who am I raising?
Power Windows (1985): Grand Designs. Good shit. “Against the run of the mill, static as it seems, we break the surface tension with our wild, kinetic dreams.”
Hold Your Fire (1987): Prime Mover. This album is the first one since Caress of Steel with songs that I actively do not like. I do love this song though.
Presto (1989): Chain Lightning. Okay, sometimes I say this is my favorite Rush song.
Roll the Bones (1991): Bravado. This was pretty hard for me. This album came out the same year I was born, and Roll the Bones was a CD I remember seeing around the house for my entire childhood, and it was the extent of my Rush exposure up until my dad made his torrented Rush road trip mix CD that sent me down the Rush rabbit hole from which I never escaped. So, anyway, even the songs that I’m like… I don’t know if this song is good… I’m still like, it’s my jam, though! I can only speak to it as a person thoroughly brainwashed to love the album, but the whole thing is thoroughly listenable to me.
Counterparts (1993): Leave That Thing Alone. Oddly enough, this album is like the anti-Roll the Bones for me, even though it directly follows it. It was the last of the Rush studio albums I bought (besides the ones that hadn’t come out yet), and I just didn’t really like it. I think there’s a level of cringe/’that didn’t age… great’-ness (and not the nerdy type of cringe, because, arguably there’s a decent amount of cringe in all of Rush), that starts to show up in Hold Your Fire and goes through to Test for Echo, but it really peaks for me in this one. Not that it aged badly, it just is different enough to how we think about things now that it’s kinda like… eh. And I’m 100% talking about the lyrics, I actually really like most of the music (though it sounds... weirdly mixed? to me? or something?). Leave That Thing Alone is the instrumental song on the album and it FUCKING SLAPS! (Counterparts is, btw, often a fan favorite, but Rush fans are often white, cis-het, gen-x men, so…)
Test for Echo (1996): Limbo. Also an instrumental track, although this album is infinitely more listenable to me than Counterparts is. The cringe is all goofier, which I think helps.
Vapor Trails (2002): Secret Touch. This was the most recent album that had come out when I was 13 and discovering Rush, and it’s usually the album that I’ll say is my favorite, when pressed. This one was by far the hardest to choose a favorite from. I changed it several times. My dad’s mixed tape of mostly ‘80s/’90s Rush was what piqued my interest, but when I followed up listening to the first song on 2112 (2112, which is over 20 min long, btw) with listening to One Little Victory from Vapor Trails (even just the first like… three seconds of the song), I was absolutely hooked! I bought 2112 and Vapor Trails because they were the only Rush albums at Best Buy that weren’t compilations, and---boy! Am I glad that was the case! This crazy, weird, almost orchestral, but only three people playing, amazing, ‘70s sci-fi journey that was 2112, then this intense drum solo and heavy rock song, which both sounded so different from each other, but even more different from everything my dad had played of Rush, which would have been created between those two albums. I was absolutely obsessed.
Snakes & Arrows (2007): Hope. This one’s one of the three instrumental songs (which are all amazing), but this time not because I don’t like the lyrics of the rest of the album, just because it’s great. It’s actually just Alex playing the guitar, which is very strange for them, but it’s beautiful. Snake’s and Arrows was my first real ‘A band I love and have made a part of my identity is coming out with a new album!’ experience, and it was so much fun. I had two teachers at the time, who were also fans, to bond over it with, and my dad was also super psyched. Rush was the first concert I ever went to (R40 in 2004), and I went to two more on the Snakes and Arrows tour, and two more on the tour after that (Time Machine, 2010-2011). Besides that I’ve only ever been to one Panic! At the Disco concert for my sister’s Birthday (2008?), which was really more like just a really bad party… like all of the worst parts of a school dance and a house party (it was at a weirdly small “ballroom”), and the band wasn’t even playing well---it sucked. and a U2 concert (2018). That concert was actually so good, though. People can say whatever they want about U2, but that was a fucking amazing show. (10/10, would recommend, would go again at any and all opportunities.) (But there will never be another Rush OR U2 concert with all of the members there again, because ALL OF MY DRUMMERS ARE BREAKING!) (Larry’s not dead, he just has drummer related health issues.) (I was all alone contracting in Maine when Neil Peart died. Like, I didn’t have anyone I knew to talk to in person about anything, let alone this thing that was very sad for me, but was a relatively niche interest.)
Clockwork Angels (2012) BU2B. The music started slipping for me a tiny bit with Snakes and Arrows, or maybe… the music and vocals together? I think mostly the music… But it’s even more extreme in this album. I think it’s just like A LOT for me. And I’m a Rush fan, so… The book that was written based on this story was fun, and I respect what they were trying to do with the album, but I almost never just go and listen to this album or any of the songs. Except sometimes BU2B, I actually do think that’s a pretty good song---I think the name just bothers me.
I have no idea who would bother to read all that, but it was fun to do! I made a playlist of these songs, and a playlist of my least favorite song from each album, and it was really interesting.
My cat died yesterday morning, and I had to just keep going; I had to go to work, do all the normal stuff, but I was really sad. She’s been around for way more of my life than not, especially the parts of my life I can remember, and she lived twice as long as her breed’s expectancy. Which is a cold comfort, considering how much more of me she carried with her because of all that extra time. She was there when I started high school, there for every break up I’ve ever had, my parents divorce, that time my husband and I lived in a three bedroom house with nine other people, a couple other cats, and a dog. When I joined the Navy, when my kids were born... And she was so very her up to the very end.
Anyway, this was a welcome distraction as I kept trying not to openly weep (and give myself a migraine) (which I did) all night at work.
I haven’t actually checked Tumblr, so I don’t know who else has done this:

Two-Faced Jewel: New game system
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After getting particularly frustrated with a few bogged-down combats during the vampire resort dungeon, we eventually decided: D&D wasn't the system for us. Rather than shop around for a new fantasy RPG, though, I just decided to indulge in our group's common hobby and... come up with a game system from scratch, tailored to meet the needs of the game as it was being played.
The main functionality I wanted the system to have:
Continuous advancement, so it's easy to give the players rewards as the game progresses
Combat optimized for speed while retaining meaningful battlefield tactics
Rules for social encounters that are largely optional and interface smoothly with and enhance freeform roleplaying
Here's what I came up with to address each of these criteria:
Rolls and stats
To address the first point, I decided to have the basic roll for the game be 2d20, using PBTA-ish move resolution mechanics with much bigger numbers than usual. With bigger numbers on the rolls, it's a lot easier to hand out stat increases and situational bonuses that can accurately represent big and small advantages while overall reducing variance. With 2d6, even a +1 to something is a huge shift to the likely outcomes, so you have to be really precious about your balance and avoid throwing plusses and minuses around willy-nilly. With 2d20, I can be a little more loose with handing out character advancement even in sessions where not much happens.
A roll in this system is 2d20 plus some stat or combination of stats. The outcome table generally looks like this:
10 or less: You fail at the thing.
11-20: You fail at the thing, but get some tangential benefit from the attempt.
21-30: You succeed at the thing, but suffer some complication.
31+: You succeed at the thing.
Additionally, since we have d20s and crits are fun, a 1 or a 20 on either die amplifies the negative side of the roll or the positive side of the roll respectively. Double 1s is a catastrophe that totally upends the situation, and double 20s is a spectacular success beyond what ought to be possible. 20 and 1 will generally cause some sort of chaos. Plus, we've got a Luck and Karma system for when players really need a roll to succeed and are willing to pay a price.
(We're about to trial an adjustment to this where we reduce all the stats by 1 and make the thresholds 9-, 10-19, 20-29, and 30+ just for legibility. Probably should've started that way.)
Speaking of stats- the core stats are:
Strength, which is attack strongness and muscle and is basically everyone's dump stat in this game since we don't do a ton of combat
Stamina, which affects max HP and other Constitution type stuff, general endurance and grit
Speed, which encompasses dexterity and is used for stealth and dodging
Cunning, which you'll notice I relabeled Smarts on the character cards because I realized every other stat started with S and I almost had a pattern
and Speech, which is social expression and insight.
On top of that, most players have a sixth stat for something unique about them- Looseleaf's spirit magic, Saelhen's evil magic bracer, Orluthe's cleric abilities, Oyobi's total lack of wilderness survival skills. It started with just the one, but since then we haven't been shy about tacking on new stats as players encounter new magic abilities they're unfamiliar with. Everyone's got at least eight stats, at this point.
Notably: unless it's tied to an ability that depends on it, we don't have stats for knowledge types. Originally I wanted to go all-out with knowledge stats and different types of perception, but what's actually way easier is: if you, the GM, want the players to know something, Just Tell Them, and if you don't, then don't. NPC party members are a great excuse to have someone notice a thing that the party wasn't trying to notice, if you needed that to happen!
Advancement is something we're still trying to figure out. Originally I had a big list of things where it was like... okay, end of session you pick one stat to advance, but it can't just be any stat. If you fulfill one of these Strength conditions, like doing strenuous physical exercise or hitting someone in a fight, you're eligible to up Strength at end of session. In practice though, that sort of forced minmaxing in Speech and Cunning since most sessions were just roleplay, and sometimes no conditions were being fulfilled at all. So we switched to "okay, to be eligible for a stat, you need to decide during play to give yourself -10 on a roll for that stat", but that had similar problems re:uneven advancement based on who rolled what and when. We still don't have anything that really works well.
Combat
There's two main things that exist to streamline combat: one is, the map is zone-based, where you're either in the same zone as an opponent or you're not. The move action, which just costs 1/3 AP unless there's a specific obstacle you need to roll to circumvent, moves you from one zone to any other known unobstructed zone, or create a new one if you go somewhere not accounted for in the map. Ranged attacks can hit stuff not in your zone, melee attacks you need to be in the zone for. No fussing around with movement ranges or AoO, no breaking down how to get from point A to point B- either you can Just Go There or you need to bypass an obstacle first. Saves so much time.
But you know what saves even more time?
You don't make attack rolls. You have one or more Basic Attacks, which are just... you have a weapon, or some spell you're practiced with, and on your turn if all you want to do is Use Weapon On Badguy, then you just spend 2/3 AP and do that, and inflict the damage your attack does on the enemy you're attacking. There's no tension in deciding whether or not you succeed at Hit Goblin With Sword, a thing you've done a hundred times before. If you don't know what you want to do with your turn in combat, you can almost always just spend 3/3 AP to take the default action of Walk Up To Enemy And Hit Them.
There are exceptions, though- two of them. The exceptions are Armor and Evasive, which represent enemies where doing damage just by hitting them is actually in question. Armor is flat damage reduction, and while you're free to hit an armored enemy for not-as-much-damage normally, you can opt to take a risk and make a roll to Smash Through or Find A Weak Point, rolling dice to risk failure to gain extra damage. Evasive X enemies you need to roll Hit Home (2d20 + Speed - X) to land a hit on, or find a way to temporarily neutralize their evasion. Players can also take the Dodge action to temporarily give themselves Evasive [Speed] for the next attack. This gives me a way to represent armored knights or zippy flying enemies when necessary, while keeping combat fast by default.
Players have various skills and extra moves they can do besides Basic Attacks and the optional modifier rolls, and those form the backbone of the strategic depth. Ways to buff themselves, place obstacles and cover on the field, support their allies, or mess with the action economy. These are all custom-built for each PC and often require rolls, which requires some trust in the GM to balance.
Social Encounters
These form the bulk of play sessions in this game, just by dint of what the players tend to like to do. And... most of the time, there's no special rules for these. The only interface with the rules here is that you've got a few special moves for when you want to use your stats to get an edge.
Through Your Teeth is the lying move, which adds Cunning and Speech minus a penalty for the plausibility of your lie and the target's relative savvy. Oftentimes I just don't even require a roll here- I tend to only bring it up when the player is saying something that actually does have some kind of inconsistency with the target's observed reality, which they need to be careful to conceal.
Something's Fishy is the opposite, which just rolls raw Cunning to try and make the equivalent of an Insight check. The thing I love about this is that I will never ask the players to roll Something's Fishy. But! You can roll it whenever you want, on any social interaction, to check if someone's lying to you, with no penalty even on a full fail. The best times are when you have an NPC lie and the player doesn't even think to check. Always delicious.
Find the Right Words is the equivalent of a persuasion check, but I hate when the dice say that something has succeeded at persuading someone or failed to persuade someone irrespective of the words that actually got said, thanks to nebulous Charisma. Instead, the player rolls this before attempting to persuade someone. I'll paste the whole outcome table here:
10-: You don’t really have a read on them, and they might perceive that you’re being a little manipulative here.
11-20: You’re not sure exactly what they do want to hear from you, but you do know what they don’t want to hear, to avoid the worst outcome.
21-30: You pick up on some hint towards their motivations and goals for the interaction.
31+: You’re pretty sure you can read them like a book, and you’re told more or less exactly what it is they want to hear, modulo deliberately hidden intentions.
It's more people-reading than persuasion- ultimately, it's up to the player to say the words that will persuade the target. Rolling just gives them a chance to pick up on things that they might not have figured out just from play, and give them an edge in the interaction. It's also a great opportunity to drop nuggets of characterization that wouldn't necessarily come across just in dialogue.

That's pretty much all there is to it, minus the details of some boring functional Basic Moves, advancement triggers, and combat keywords. If you're interested in those details, you can check out the google doc here.

hiii um technodelic for the album ask 😁
oooooh yayy honestly my fav ymo album :D
best song: seoul music for suuuure i love that bass and the drums in it so much and the whole mood of it i think it really like encapsulates the whole mood of the album very well like just so perfectly minimalistic while still being pop in a way.
favorite song: hmmm probably seoul music or neue tanz cause i love the use of kecak vocals in the latter like it works so well to keep the song like floating like having that in place of where like a chorus or smthn would be is so genius!
least favorite song: probablyyyy key cause while its still great it does sound like a retread of cue from bgm but not as beautiful but it also does work on the album coming right b4 the finale prologue/epilogue.
most overrated song: hmmm idk that much abt like wht song was popular at the time or what songs are popular now id probably have to say like taiso or graduated grey theyre both great tho LOL i just am way more entranced with side 1s more overly minimalist pop than side 2 being kinda more overtly straightforward and a retread of bgms pop moments tho also taiso is another song that perfectly sums up the album in like a pop single format which is so amazing given how dense the music on the album is. graduated grey is also great since i do always love hosono vocals since he rarely did them w/ ymo but also think the song isnt as good as anything on side 1.
underrated: light in darknesssss love how like understated everything in it is its like thee perfect way to close side 1 like it sounds friendly and comfortable and has that beautiful bass playing and just the feel of it is so beautiful like just an excellent mood piece that gets better w/ eaech listen
the banger of all bangers: LIGHT IN DARKNESS.
rate: i would say 10/10 or 9/10 i would say that maybe it isnt like perfect perfect like side 1 is def better than side 2 and the overtly pop song format they would do to much better effect on naughty boys but it does feel like a really beautiful work overall despite that like just a very mature definite work from start to finish and really showed how great they were at making sounds outside of just using synths n stuff. w/o a doubt my fav ymo album if nothing else just for the overt gamelan kecak influence that finds itself at the front of it and would show up again in both hosono and sakamotos work so often :D
