bob's burgers has a lot of casual queerness which makes it harder to point to any specific character as "canon" rep like obvious exceptions like nat and marshmallow aside (but still their exact identities are never stated within the show) there's a lot of implied queer identity that's not expanded upon because its just an accepted part of their world. and they dont need so many words to describe those experiences

like bob is bisexual and clearly attracted to men even if he's never explicitly said the word bisexual. mr ambrose is heavily queer-coded and outright talks about having theater orgies w/ other gay men but never SAYS that he's gay. jimmy pesto has sex with transgender sex workers (of course) and male prostitute and its implied that he isn't straight but his life is surrounded by so much toxic masculinity that he isn't willing to accept or acknowledge that part of himself. bob and teddy openly talking about how sexually attractive they find the male handyman and how handsome he is. mr fischoeder LITERALLY has gay sex parties w/ all his rich friends (not even close to the only time his queerness is implied) but he isn't outright saying "yes im sexually attracted to the male gender" bcuz its implied.... its very much normal in this show for people to be gay/bisexual/transgender but bcuz of how its talked about and protrayed people who dont want to acknowledge that just Won't See that part of their world

even w/ the kids the implication is there like rudy casually talking about how attractive an older boy is or calling zeke his soulmate or jimmy jr being jealous of gene's relationship with zeke and how physically affectionate they are and how they say i love you. douglas is very obviouely queer coded and implied to be in a Situationship with josh but these are the things u wouldn't always notice unless you were paying attention

so when you say things like "calvin fischoeder obviously isn't meant to be straight" people will ask for proof or actual canon confirmation of that but there isn't any one thing u can point to because its..... everywhere? its his entire character

I am so glad people are enjoying Complex Inquiries, but there's just one teeny tiny minor problem that I'm seeing.

(I want to clarify that I'm not offended or ungrateful for my lovely readers! Absolutely not! I love you all so much and I mean that, no matter what your take away was from the story.)

But having a small portion of people gender Neo as he/him in their comments after I wrote a very clear scene where Neo explicitly states it wants to be referred to as it/its or at the very least, anything other than he/him is. . .

. . . a little disappointing?

I worked SO hard to ensure that any time the word "it" was used in my manuscript only ever referred to Unit MS-1/Neo. This was something I kept constantly in mind when I was writing my prose to make sure things were never unclear in the narration of events. Not changing Neo's pronouns from it/its was a very deliberate narrative choice and not one I took lightly.

Neo is explicitly nonbinary, not because "it's a robot", but because it is art. And it is not Sonic.

I also want to acknowledge that "it" can be a very difficult pronoun for some people to use because of past trauma. I absolutely want to respect that. Neo gets a little pedantic about they/them pronouns but that doesn't mean you can't use those pronouns for it. Please feel free to use they/them pronouns instead if it/its doesn't vibe with you.
