Worst Song Ever?
First off, song lists are kinda dumb, subjective, whatever. But what the hell. So today while at a coffee shop, the 2021 Justin Bieber song, "Peaches," comes on, and for the time being it's my personal Worst Song Ever, or at least most annoying. Then I remember way back in the latter '90s, that "comedy" newspaper writer, Dave Barry, had his reader's vote on a list of Worst Songs Ever, and they chose "Hooty Sapperticker." (No, I can't for the life of me find the article online.) I of course think "Hooty Sapperticker" isn't just not bad, it's one of the better novelty songs ever -- probably created only for peeler joint jukeboxes, which was a thing way back... In any event, "Hooty Sapperticker" was never even close to a hit, so you will never be subjected to it at a coffee shop, or while shopping at Rite Aid, or what have you. Hence, it can't be the Worst Song Ever, because it has existed in its own odd world, far away from your daily life, innocent in its idiocy. Bieber's cringe-tune aggressively invaded our world, and profited mightily from it, like fuckin' Halliburton or something. So herein lies my simple chat question -- you tell me, WHICH OF THESE TWO SONGS IS THE WORST?:

She’s Got More of Everything: the Little Space Girl.
An unexpected bonus of replaying Fallout 4 with mods are the “lore friendly” add-on radio stations, which make the gameplay loops deliciously fun.
One of my sets includes “Repconn Radio”, which alongside having an ongoing narrative about ghoulified DJs Captain Cosmos and Jangles the Moon Monkey’s weird adventures, has a theme of “old timey space music” and I was introduced to the gem:
"The Little Space Girl”
Now, it’s very much of its time, using an Alvin and the Chipmunk voice effect for the space girl, but frankly, I’m shocked there hasn’t been a cover or three of this recently, because it’s an alien/monsterfucker anthem from 1959.
The story tells the story of a human schlub who comes across a lonesome alien girl who immediately wants to get “married” (in the Beach Boys meaning of the term)
Cause youve got four arms
The better to hold you
Three lips
The better to kiss you
Three eyes
All the better to see
I can really rock and swing
Cause I've got more of everything
Oh, Mister Earthman, will you marry me?
The dude repeatedly objects on the merits of what other people will think and how human authorities will lock them up. But notably not out of any sort of personal revulsion or objection. Which plays out by the end of the song, where after “one little kiss”, he’s fine with interplanetary matrimony.

Trick or treat!
(Does Althaar do Halloween?)
A-HEM?
Does Althaar do Halloween?
Has someone forgotten episode 21, or perhaps not just gotten there yet? (and NO ACTUAL SPOILERS here, but for the fact that was our "Halloween" episode)
Containing one of B&I's favorite Althaar moments, Althaar's New Halloween Novelty Song!
Which, as you may or may not recall (and if you don't, it stands alone with no series spoilers), goes a little something like this:
https://on.soundcloud.com/HDXUt
And as some of the song/dialogue can be hard to make out (I'll fix that in an eventual remix), here's the script pages for the song:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This bit was added to Linus Gelber's original script by B&I in the showrunner rewrite, as we're both Halloween Novelty Song fans, and we couldn't resist (though Berit didn't have time to write original music, so Ian had to find and license stock music we could possibly write lyrics to).
Extra Halloween bonus: the official Gemini CollisionWorks Halloween Playlist! 31.25 HOURS of Spooky Goodness to put on random and enjoy, including most of our inspirations:
Have a SPOOKY day!

The Chicken Song — VoicePlay live performances
For this post, I want to let you do a bit of compare-and-contrast. Below are two performances of the same piece, two years apart. As with a lot of VoicePlay's more theatrical skit-songs, every iteration is a little different, and delightful in its own way. Especially in comedic numbers like this, "Elvira", and "Road Trip", where the guys are trying to make each other laugh almost as much as they're trying to entertain their audience.
Details:
title: The Chicken Song
original song / performers: American novelty song also known as "The Rooster" ; first two verses included in the New Christy Minstrels' "Bits and Pieces" medley (1962)
arranged by: VoicePlay
.
version 1
youtube
This video was recorded during VoicePlay's concert at The O'Shaughnessy theater at St. Catherine University during the 2014 Arts Midwest conference in Minnesota.
performance date: 19 September 2014
My favorite bits:
Layne playfully admonishing the videographer while clucking
Eli's tokyo-drift skibble at the end of each chase
"Anybody wanna milk me?" ::delighted pointing at the audience response:: "Oh, okay!"
"Big guy." ::patpat::
::half-heartedly points at his raised hand:: "’T’s’muh branch."
Eli's smug grin at Geoff's reaction to him taking over, "And an awful lot of it."
Layne, Geoff, and Eli's startled smiles at one audience member's distinctive laughter
Tony repeatedly trying to refuse his assigned role, only to get annoyed when the others don't immediately back him up. "C'mon!" 😠
"I don't think we have that."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Trivia:
Tony's improvised dialog, "Hey, my name is Maggie. Welcome to Matt's," is a reference to Matt's Bar in Minneapolis, where the guys had been very excited to go for a lunch of "juicy lucy" burgers before the show.
Since they were in Home Free's neck of the woods for the conference, the guys had a chance to catch up with Rob Lundquist and Tim Foust.
Tim live-tweeted the show in his typical wry fashion, including some arboreal appreciation for his fellow bass singer.

version 2
youtube
This performance was part of a benefit concert for the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric Aids Foundation hosted by the Alpha Epsilon Phi fraternity at Stanford University. Tony got stuck in Florida because of Hurricane Matthew, so their old friend Paul from Vox Audio agreed to pinch hit. Which made it even more chaotic than usual.
performance date: 7 October 2016
My favorite bits:
Layne shaking his tail feathers
Eli and Layne's little finger wiggle high-five
Earl and Layne cracking each other up with livestock jokes, then everyone giggling even more when Geoff calls them out on it
Eli laughing so hard he has to take a knee
::elbow bump::
Geoff asking the audience, "D'you guys know what Chiclets are?" only for Earl to immediately pull one out of his pocket
Paul accidentally skipping the second refusal gag and grumbling about not getting paid enough
::wolf whistle:: "Shaddup."
Eli doing his darnedest not to laugh at Paul's waitress antics, to the point of angling himself away from the rest of the group
Paul's incredible scream
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Trivia:
The "California cow" / "happy cow" / "best cheese" banter was referencing a series of ads from the California Milk Advisory Board that aired in the early 2000s.
The Chiclets gum question was asked at least in part because that brand had recently been discontinued.
Young lads Layne, Earl, Geoff, and James May recorded a live audio version (without the waitress verse) for 4:2:Five's album "Time Machine" way back in 2004.

I want to find the songs from a cd/album I had about 7 years ago. The problem is not finding the name but getting any results for the name, so I don't know if you can help. The cd was called Cat Power, with about 12 songs about cats with the first song having the same name. I remember that there was one about a cat who wanted to go out but regretted it when it started raining, one about a cat who liked butterflies too much to want to eat them, and one short one called Fat Cat. I remember the lyrics to Fat Cat being "did someone say I'm overweight/I carry quite a pouch/I lumber 'cross the kitchen floor then pad back to the couch/ten times a day I make this trip I don't know what's the matter/despite my constant exercise I just keep getting fatter." I've tried looking up the lyrics with ro results, and when I looked up Cat Power, I could only find music by an artist of that name, not what I was looking for. Good luck - If I find it myself I'll post about it and tag this blog.
Cat people of tumblr, do your best! Does anyone recognize this cd?

i loved this song so much. i was 11 when it came out. i watched the super bowl just because i liked this song/video, and i don’t know anything about football and i can’t learn, i tried, it makes no sense. i cannot keep any of that shit straight in my head. i thought maybe if i just just stared at games on TV, i’d eventually figure it out, but no. i will never get football, it’s just not gonna happen for me.
i did write a poem about that super bowl from the 1985-86 season. i knew some vocabulary from hearing sports people talk, i could mimic sports speak pretty well, i just didn’t know what any of it meant. my teacher wanted to have my poem printed in our little town’s newspaper. i was pretty mortified because i knew i would be exposed as a fraud. there would be people who would be able to tell i didn’t understand the football game. i didn’t want to tell my teacher the reason i wished to decline, so i told her it wasn’t my best work and i’d rather keep it out of the papers. she would not hear it, she thought it was wonderful. so yeah, my poem about the super bowl was in my hometown newspaper. nobody confronted me over it. as an adult, i found out that everybody thinks i’m r****ded (i’m autistic) so they probably were like “aww lookit the special girl, pretending to talk about football.”

The Fantastics, "Millionaire Hobo"
It's a stretch to call this a Halloween tune, but this is some great doo-wop, a genre whose novelty songs were often as good as the straight tunes.

I discovered some novelty singers from the 40s-60s a while back (don't ask me why anymore, it was like a month or two ago now), so I thought I'd share some of the Christmas novelty songs I saw. Let's start with one, and then add more through reblogs:
