Decided to restart ME1 (with Evvy of course) and between that and writing that little one shot with James today my mind’s been wandering towards command — what lessons they’ve learned, from whom, how it impacts and shapes their own command style

Maybe I’ll write more exploring that 🤔

(One of my favorite parts of the Tortall series is in Kel’s quartet with that same focus on command, learning from Raoul, how the training has changed from knights who learned more or less to look after themselves to knights who have to learn how to work with different kinds of groups and ughhhh I just love that storyline so much let’s explore that theme in spaaaaaace)

Usually, yes! If I don't, I'm usually at a loss at what to say because I'm awed at the comment. Trust me, I'm kicking my feet and twirling my hair though.

Hmmm. Glass Splinters will probably be, since it's a horror story.

7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

Scattered Across Your Spine or maybe TAE.

Not yet heh.

Yes. Drawn-out, sensual, intense smut with plot. I value tension, so I like to think of it as a taut piano string that has snapped.

Currently? Lucemond with Jacegan overtaking it. C!DNF or DNF AUs are closely making a comeback for me.

15. What's a WIP you want to finish, but doubt you ever will?

Nope, all of my fics will be finished eventually. Very busy atm.

16. What are your writing strengths?

Building tension. Some dialogue.

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

Canon-compliant dialogue for DNF. I talk like a high school boy irl, but it's hard for me to make it sound natural between dteam sometimes.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?

I appreciate the high valyrian in HOTD fics, but it's a pain for the reader to translate it on their own without in-text translations provided by the author (unless it's something simple like qybor, kepa, or taoba). Personally, I dislike making the reader break their immersion to scroll all the way up or down in the A/Ns for the translation. Imo, it's better to just write in italics to distinguish High Valyrian.

the emotional rollercoaster it has provided for weeks now? The characters so rich in depth it challenged my media analysis skills; reading so much well-curated thoughts and theories from viewers on here and twitter (and sometimes reddit).

I don’t think ive ever felt so heartbroken about a show’s (limited series at that) finale before 😭

“Well, then, I should let you get more rest.”

Aymeric frowned at Hali. “You’re leaving so soon?”

Hali turned back around and she waved her hands. “Oh no, I’m not leaving leaving, I’m staying right here in the chair, as I’m sure that you don’t want me laying next to you while you are trying to sleep.”

The elezen narrowed his eyes at her and he practically purred, his voice deep and enticing. “I am not complaining.”

Hali’s jaw fell to the floor, and a feeling arose from the depths of her loins. She quickly tried not to focus on what was going on inside of her own body but she couldn’t form any words.

“Oh… uhhhh…”

“Hali, I can move over and you can sleep right here.” Aymeric scooted over to the opposite side of the bed, leaving room for Hali to lie down next to him, and he patted the empty spot in the bed.

Hali stumbled over her words as much as her hands were shaking and her heart was beating a malm a minute. How was this actually happening?! Was the man of her dreams actually inviting her into bed with him?!

“Uhhhh… next to you?! Well…a-are you sure?”

“I don’t mind in the slightest. You need your rest as well, as it is the dead of night and you can’t possibly be comfortable sleeping in a chair. Besides, there’s plenty of room for the both of us.”

“Uhhhhhh….”

Aymeric’s smile was as inviting as his voice, and he was making it increasingly difficult for her to resist him.

“My friend, you look exhausted. I worry you are tiring yourself overmuch, and you need a proper night’s rest, and sleeping upright in a chair isn’t it.”

To Hali, it seemed as if Aymeric either wasn’t aware of how inappropriate it would seem to any Ishgardian if an outsider was sleeping in the same bed as the lord commander of the temple knights, or that in the moment, he didn’t care. Either way, Hali might have been shaking like a leaf in the wind, but she was no fool. If she didn’t take this opportunity to be closer to Aymeric than she had ever thought possible for her, then gods be damned she would take it.

So, I’ve been dying to comment on this one section of my fic Hold Me Closer ever since I wrote it!

First of all, this is not when Hali falls in love with Aymeric, because by this point she already has, but she’s clearly more aware of her feelings in this moment. She hasn’t admitted it to herself yet, because that comes in Friendship and Water, but she definitely is aware that she feels something more for this man than just a crush. Hali also feels as though she’s never going to be in a relationship with him, but she doesn’t want to regret not sleeping in the same bed with him if he offers it to her. Hey, Hali isn’t stupid okay?

I also want to point out one thing that I left ambiguous in this scene. Was Aymeric unaware of what the implications would be if someone saw the two of them sleeping in the same bed together? Of course not. He was quite aware of what the populace would think, but in the moment, he’s in a lot of pain and pumped full of medication no doubt, and in the moment, he doesn’t care what anyone thinks. He’s just survived being stabbed, and he’s thinking about the woman he loves and he doesn’t want her to sleep sitting up in a chair after she’s come running to his bedside once more to comfort him and keep him company.

One last point: yes, Aymeric has already fallen in love with Hali as well, but unlike her, he’s also fully aware of his feelings here. This is confirmed right before this section of the fic, which he can’t help himself but to ask her for a hug when he wakes up and sees her at his side in the middle of the night.

Is there a trope you’ve yet to try your hand at, but really want to?

Oh! Um... You know? I can't think of one? I... don't tend to resist when a new idea strikes me? ^^" Even if I haven't published it, I've at least started writing it.

There are... less tropes, and more techniques I want to try that I haven't found the right idea for. I really want to play with flashbacks, and how to work them into narration in a way that flows? I want to practise working symmetry into my longer stories.

But tropes... Like, the closest I can think of is Body Sharing, but specifically how the characters would deal with romantic relationships that they don't share while body-sharing (complex and weird polycules are my jam), but... I've written (started writing), uh... three fics with that premise, it's just I didn't get as far as I'd like into them before I got distracted? So I didn't get to the really juicy bits of interpersonal shenanigans I had planned ^^"

Oh! Blame the Bastard! I hatehatehate that trope. Haaaaaaate it. I'm pretty sure I'm never going to write it, not unless I plan to subvert it. Not even if the Jealous Wife is the obvious villain. I hate that this is even a trope, tbh, that it's prevalent enough in our stories, and realistic enough to human nature to be that prevalent. Blame the person who did something wrong, ffs. Argh!

#8: If you had to write an entire story without either action or dialogue, which would you choose and how would it go?

I write dialogue-only ficlets sometimes to help me get into character's heads without distracting myself by trying to describe scenery/actions/etc. So clearly a story without action!

Right now, it would probably involve the Staryk King from Spinning Silver engaging in some solid clown-to-clown communication with Miryem, in which they blithely talk past each other while assuming the other person definitely knows exactly what is going on (So, the book, but a missing scene? haha).

#26: How do you get into your character’s head? How do you get out? Do you ever regret going in there in the first place?

I can say with complete honesty that I had not read ahead to see what this question was when I answered the first one!

The dialogue-only ficlets also help me with quickly switching between character PoVs, as does writing out character meta. Other than that, I've never really thought of, "Getting out of a character's head," as something specific I do!

Do I ever regret going into their heads in the first place, though? ...define "regret"...

#32: What is a line from a poem/novel/fanfic etc that you return to from time and time again? How did you find it? What does it mean to you?

Now this one I knew right away. As I'm sure you will be shocked to hear, it is a quote from Lord of the Rings :p

(Possibly more surprising, it is not the quote I've already shared on tumblr!)

It's Sam's line to Frodo, from the third book, when Sam is encouraging Frodo to keep up hope:

Sam: I know. It's all wrong. By rights we shouldn't even be here. But we are. It's like in the great stories, Mr. Frodo. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger, they were. And sometimes you didn't want to know the end. Because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened? "How I found it" is probably obvious - while reading LotR the first time.

What it means to me: The definition of a narrative hero - the person who doesn't turn back, who keeps going, even when things seem at their most bleak and hopeless and cruel, because there is still good in their world even when they can't see it themselves, and it is worth fighting for even if they won't be the ones who get to enjoy it afterwards.

It's also just generally a very hopeful message. A new day will come, so long as there are people willing to keep going through the night to reach it.

All of it? Honestly, I have no idea what counts as Extra Weird vs. Normal Weird. I do have a tendency to pick out unusual things to focus on. Also, I convert all my writing to plain text and use html tags before copying it over to ao3, if it wasn't already in a plain text file to start, so that I can use html tags for formatting and not futz around with ao3's messy rich text formatter.

the problem with reading and writing leading to a strong vocabulary is that you tend to know the vibe of words instead of their meanings.

the funniest meltdown ive ever had was in college when i got so overstimulated that i could Not speak, including over text. one of my friends was trying to talk me through it but i was solely using emojis because they were easier than trying to come up with words so he started using primarily emojis as well just to make things feel balanced. this was not the Most effective strategy... until. he tried to ask me "you okay?" but the way he chose to do that was by sending "👉🏼👌🏼❓" and i was so shocked by suddenly being asked if i was dtf that i was like WHAT???? WHAT DID YOU JUST SAY TO ME?????????? and thus was verbal again

My 2022 Fanfic Year in Review!

I don’t know about the rest of y’all, but 2022 has been a rough one for me. Between challenges in my offline life and modding for the Drops of Moonlight Zine eating up most of my fandom time and energy, I didn’t write as much as I might have liked in other years.

Anyway, here’s my Ao3 Wrapped!!

Well, I changed some of how I post this year (for example, I stopped posting to FFN entirely and decided to use ‘collections’ on Ao3 instead of chapters going forward for related but standalone shorts/one shots).

That said, I completed 5 fics:

61,054 that have been posted - fewer than previous years, but more than I’d thought!

3. Your most popular fic this year:

Of what I posted this year, (Blind) Date got the most hits, but overall The Runner-Up remained quite popular and got a lot of engagement.

4. Your personal favourite this year:

This is always a cruel question, given that everything I write feels like my baby/a part of me. The two I was most actively excited/couldn’t stop while writing were Blind Date and then you showed up… so… coin flip between the two?

5. Your favourite scene:

I *loved* writing the date in Blind Date with Destiny. Their dancing around each other and flirting and playing that ‘but do you remember me and if you don’t do I have to tell you’ game was SO MUCH FUN and basically flowed directly out of my brain and onto the page.

6. A fic or scene that challenged you:

Day six of my UsaMamo week fic (We Do This Every Time) gave me a lot of trouble. Turns out it’s hard to consolidate an entire arc from an anime into a single chapter, who knew 🤣

7. A line of writing you’re proud of:

I feel like this is always the hardest question to answer and the one I put off until the very end, in part because when you write 60k+ words in a year (which comes out to like 2.5k sentences the way I write them), it’s hard to single out one!!

This year, I’m going to highlight this line from Close to Home:

Mamoru took an obnoxiously slow sip from his water glass. “Do you bring a lot of dates home?” he asked in an offhand way that made her want to dump her curry on top of his perfectly coiffed hair.

8. A comment that touched you:

I always feel like I get too many sweet reviews to single out just one; in fact, I now have a designated folder in my email titled “Review Joy” where I file away some of the ones I want to revisit when I’m feeling low. So here is a much-too-short and entirely non-exhaustive roundup of a few snippets from some of my favorite reviews this year:

Just crossed your story today and *had* to go on Ao3 to read the second part!

I can’t picture things clearly or for long in my mind, but this scene was crystal clear, at least Usagi bowing to the little rabbit and talking in a friendly, but quiet and gentle, almost reverential way because Usako was part of Mamoru, vulnerable, almost like part of his soul.

I love all the check-ins for consent - they were so natural!! So good!! Thank you for writing!!

The scene of him putting things together was also suitably spooky and conspiratorial, like the ending of the Usual Suspects kinda.

Ngl I was SHRIEKING AT MY PHONE when I saw she'd written something SO SWEET into the book?! AND THEN DASHED LIKE THE LITTLE ADORABLE IDIOT SHE IS?

I’m always filled with excitement when I see a new story from you and it never disappoints. This is an absolutely wonderful beginning filled with emotions and sweetness and I cannot wait to see where you lead us.

Seeing bisexual rep in usagi meant the world to me as a young, questioning teen, and seeing you showcase that here and have her friends be so knowing & accepting of that really just made my heart feel so whole <3

Impeccable plotline, character depictions, and the fluff was *chef’s kiss*!!! 20/10!!!

I wish I could showcase all of every review I’ve received this year, but sadly I would run out of space way too fast. Just know that if you’ve taken the time to review for me, I am grateful from the bottom of my heart 🙏🏻

9. Something that inspired your writing this year:

Okay so I’ve already disclaimed it in the author’s note, but My Ex’s Best Friend by Machine Gun Kelly is the entire reason that then you showed up… exists.

Like honestly the line “I swear to god I never fall in love” just STUCK IN MY BRAIN as a very Mamoru-ish sentiment and I had to explore it. With instalove semi-blind-date hijinks.

10. Your proudest accomplishment (that one scene; finally finishing that one fic; posting your first fic; etc):

Probably have to go with finishing day 6 (Reunion) of UsaMamo week this year (We Do This Every Time). I basically knew what I wanted to do with it as soon as the prompts dropped, but actually whipping it into shape and getting it to be near the level I envisioned it took me longer than I hoped it would!! Was very proud to get that monster off my TBW list 🤣

11. Do you have any writing goals for the next year?

I would like to refill my tank, tbh. As I mentioned above, it’s been a rough year and in many ways I’m running on fumes - and I do think that’s been reflected in my writing (or lack thereof) in this back half of the year.

So in an ideal world, I’d like to have the time and bandwidth to feel excited about writing again. And maybe also make some progress on Close to Home.

Her voice stirred her bed companion, and without even a care in the world, Aymeric looked up at Hali and smiled warmly. (To the end of the chapter)

Ohhhhhh, now that’s a great question, anon! Aymeric’s POV of the bed sharing scene huh? Hmmm… 😏

First, to make things easier, I’ll share the link to the fic itself, Hold Me Closer, which can be found HERE.

So, before I get into it, I will admit that I want to write more from Aymeric’s POV, of which I only have written a very short piece so far. After my current WIP is done, then I’ll go ahead and write more for Aymeric.

Alright so, Hali is correct in her assessment that she unconsciously scooted over to Aymeric while she was sleeping and began to cuddle with him. Aymeric woke up briefly from this, but he was so happy that he just wrapped his arms around her and let her hold onto him. He drifted back off to sleep soon afterwards.

When he is awakened by Hali freaking out from realizing what she had done, Aymeric is still immensely happy to have been so close to her, so he’s totally in a love drunk state when he says this:

Her voice stirred her bed companion, and without even a care in the world, Aymeric looked up at Hali and smiled warmly.

“Good morning, my dear Hali.”

You can imagine that Aymeric’s Bedroom Eyes are at 100% as well, looking at Hali as if they had done something else than cuddle while they slept.

Hali’s freak out confuses him at first, as he didn’t assume that she would be so embarrassed about it, as seen in this passage:

Aymeric rubbed his eyes momentarily before he tilted his head with concern in his eyes. “Are you alright?”

Aymeric’s confusion is quickly diffused when Hali tries to keep it cool, but she fails miserably and is blushing profusely. Then we see a side of Aymeric that is rarely shown but Hali has a way of bringing it out of him, and that's his playful side. He is compelled to tease her when he sees her blush.

Hali plastered a huge grin on her face as she nervously giggled and her cheeks turned a deep red. “Who, me? Ha! Whatever do you mean?”

“Well, you are looking quite flushed,” Aymeric answered with a hint of a smirk.

Now, here comes the part that you likely were asking about anon. What does he mean when he answers Hali in the following passage:

She continued to hide her face even after she heard him softly laugh.

“There’s nothing to be embarrassed about. You are very warm and soft. Why, I haven’t slept that well in years!”

With those words, Hali looked up from her hands and jumped up from the bed entirely, screeching as she jumped down to the floor.

“Ahhhh stop teasing me!”

Aymeric’s shook his head. “‘Twas not a jest! I meant what I said.”

So, when Aymeric says that Hali has nothing to be embarrassed about and that he hasn’t slept that well in years, he is saying it in this playful manner after laughing, so he is still teasing her there, but what she doesn’t realize is that he might have said it in a teasing manner, but he actually does mean it. When he says that it wasn’t a jest, it’s the truth.

For years afterwards, Aymeric remembers this night fondly. He truly hadn’t slept that well for as long as he could remember, and doesn’t until they finally can be together, which doesn’t happen until after 6.0. He wakes up and confirms what he had already knew: he is in love with Hali, and no one else can make him feel the way that she does. He wants no other person in his bed, and he even has dreams of this night, and he dreams of what would happen if they were lovers.

Hali’s reaction to Aymeric is to be even more flustered, and stomp out of the room, since she thinks he’s just playing with her.

She shook her head once more when she heard a deep belly laugh from Aymeric as she left his sight.

Aymeric last laugh at the very end here is because she stomps out of the room entirely disheveled with no shoes on and clearly blushing still, so she’s not exactly being in any way subtle about the fact that they slept in the same bed together, and no one would believe her if she said, “It isn’t what it looks like!” He laughs at her because she’s just so damn cute and funny to him and she’s completely unaware of it.
