Confessional: I loved spending generous hunks of my summers at my aunt and uncle’s cottage on Cotnam’s Island between Ontario and Quebec along the Ottawa River. I used to think it was far far away. It wasn’t. That was just the perspective of an eight year who grew up in a small town and really didn’t travel much. Anytime you drove past the city limits seemed like a long drive. It was sort of a Pleasantville meets The Truman Show kind of phenomenon. Along the way we’d stop to pick up a treat. For me it was either a Kitkat or more likely a Sweet Marie — Cadbury’s version of an Oh Henry! And then we would hit the road hard. And when I say hard I mean hard. The ‘trail’ to the cottage was more holes than road back then. Once there, you were on your own. Reading, drawing, playing cards, adjusting the rabbit ears on the black and white TV to try to watch CBC (and that was it) fishing, and playing on the beach… if the beach was willing to come out and play. As you can see, sometimes the Ottawa River had a mind of its own and the only game you played with the beach was Hide and Seek.
