Sing to the LORD
Sing to the LORD a new song;
sing to the LORD, all the earth.
Sing to the LORD, praise his name;
proclaim his salvation day after day.
Declare his glory among the nations,
his marvelous deeds among all peoples.

Answered Prayer for Deliverance from Adversaries
To the Chief Musician. With stringed instruments. A Contemplation of David when the Ziphites went and said to Saul, “Is David not hiding with us?”
1 Save me, O God, by Your name,
And vindicate me by Your strength.
2 Hear my prayer, O God;
Give ear to the words of my mouth.
3 For strangers have risen up against me,
And oppressors have sought after my life;
They have not set God before them.
Selah
4 Behold, God is my helper;
The Lord is with those who uphold my life.
5 He will repay my enemies for their evil.
Cut them off in Your truth.
6 I will freely sacrifice to You;
I will praise Your name, O Lord, for it is good.
7 For He has delivered me out of all trouble;
And my eye has seen its desire upon my enemies.

Psalms chapter 96
1 O sing unto the LORD a new song: sing unto the LORD, all the earth.
2 Sing unto the LORD, bless his name; shew forth his salvation from day to day.
3 Declare his glory among the heathen, his wonders among all people.
4 For the LORD is great, and greatly to be praised: he is to be feared above all gods.
5 For all the gods of the nations are idols: but the LORD made the heavens.
6 Honour and majesty are before him: strength and beauty are in his sanctuary.
7 Give unto the LORD, O ye kindreds of the people, give unto the LORD glory and strength.
8 Give unto the LORD the glory due unto his name: bring an offering, and come into his courts.
9 O worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness: fear before him, all the earth.
10 Say among the heathen that the LORD reigneth: the world also shall be established that it shall not be moved: he shall judge the people righteously.
11 Let the heavens rejoice, and let the earth be glad; let the sea roar, and the fulness thereof.
12 Let the field be joyful, and all that is therein: then shall all the trees of the wood rejoice
13 Before the LORD: for he cometh, for he cometh to judge the earth: he shall judge the world with righteousness, and the people with his truth.

Psalm 96:2–3 TPT - "Don't stop! Keep on singing! Make His name famous! Tell everyone every day how wonderful He is. Give them the good news of our great Savior. Take the message of His glory and miracles to every nation. Tell them about all the extraordinary things He has done."
Start a list today. Document every blessing or gift God has given you throughout your lifetime. Now, thank Him for everything He has given you. Each of those blessings is a miracle!
After you consider this list and recognize the miracles God has already given to you, you will share your testimony with many and develop the expectation that Jesus wants to work through you.
As you are walking in the Spirit, listen for His voice 24 hours a day. He may want to heal the cashier when you stop at the drugstore. Willingly allow Him to work through your voice and your hands to minister healing to the cashier, busboy, waiter, cab driver, or anyone else you encounter during a busy day. Continually talk about the miracle-working power of God.

First Reading
2 Timothy 1:1-8
Fan into a flame the gift God gave you.
From Paul, appointed by God to be an apostle of Christ Jesus in his design to promise life in Christ Jesus; to Timothy, dear child of mine, wishing you grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and from Christ Jesus our Lord.
Night and day I thank God, keeping my conscience clear and remembering my duty to him as my ancestors did, and always I remember you in my prayers; I remember your tears and long to see you again to complete my happiness. Then I am reminded of the sincere faith which you have; it came first to live in your grandmother Lois, and your mother Eunice, and I have no doubt that it is the same faith in you as well.
That is why I am reminding you now to fan into a flame the gift that God gave you when I laid my hands on you. God’s gift was not a spirit of timidity, but the Spirit of power, and love, and self-control. So you are never to be ashamed of witnessing to the Lord, or ashamed of me for being his prisoner; but with me, bear the hardships for the sake of the Good News, relying on the power of God who has saved us and called us to be holy.
The Word of the Lord
R/ Thanks be to God.

First Reading
Titus 1:1-5
To Titus, true child of mine.
From Paul, servant of God, an apostle of Jesus Christ to bring those whom God has chosen to faith and to the knowledge of the truth that leads to true religion; and to give them the hope of the eternal life that was promised so long ago by God. He does not lie and so, at the appointed time, he revealed his decision, and, by the command of God our saviour, I have been commissioned to proclaim it. To Titus, true child of mine in the faith that we share, wishing you grace and peace from God the Father and from Christ Jesus our saviour.
The reason I left you behind in Crete was for you to get everything organised there and appoint elders in every town, in the way that I told you.

Gospel
Mark 4:26-34
The kingdom of God is a mustard seed growing into the biggest shrub of all.
Jesus said to the crowds: ‘This is what the kingdom of God is like. A man throws seed on the land. Night and day, while he sleeps, when he is awake, the seed is sprouting and growing; how, he does not know. Of its own accord the land produces first the shoot, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear. And when the crop is ready, he loses no time: he starts to reap because the harvest has come.’
He also said, ‘What can we say the kingdom of God is like? What parable can we find for it? It is like a mustard seed which at the time of its sowing in the soil is the smallest of all the seeds on earth; yet once it is sown it grows into the biggest shrub of them all and puts out big branches so that the birds of the air can shelter in its shade.’
Using many parables like these, he spoke the word to them, so far as they were capable of understanding it. He would not speak to them except in parables, but he explained everything to his disciples when they were alone.
The Gospel of the Lord
R/ Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Luke 10:1-9
Your peace will rest on that man.
The Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them out ahead of him, in pairs, to all the towns and places he himself was to visit. He said to them, ‘The harvest is rich but the labourers are few, so ask the Lord of the harvest to send labourers to his harvest. Start off now, but remember, I am sending you out like lambs among wolves. Carry no purse, no haversack, no sandals. Salute no one on the road. Whatever house you go into, let your first words be, “Peace to this house!” And if a man of peace lives there, your peace will go and rest on him; if not, it will come back to you. Stay in the same house, taking what food and drink they have to offer, for the labourer deserves his wages; do not move from house to house. Whenever you go into a town where they make you welcome, eat what is set before you. Cure those in it who are sick, and say, “The kingdom of God is very near to you.”’

R/ Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Bible Study | Proverbs 1:7 | The Significance of Fearing the Lord in Light of the Gospel
An integral aspect of walking with God is the fear of the Lord. In this article, we examine the wisdom of Proverbs 1:7 in the light of the Gospel of Christ. In doing so, we gain insight into the importance of fearing God and the repercussions of forsaking wisdom and instruction.
God Is Worthy to Be Feared
The term "fear" in the context of the fear of the Lord is not the paralyzing terror we might associate with it. Here, “fear” translates to deep respect, reverence and love for God. Therefore, by fearing the Lord, we humble ourselves, choosing God's ways over our own, recognizing Him as the great I AM, who is alone worthy of our worship.
Psalm 96:4 (NKJV) - For the Lord is great and greatly to be praised; He is to be feared above all gods.
The Bible confirms that the fear of the Lord does not entail living in constant dread or walking on eggshells under condemnation. It explicitly states that God has not given us a spirit of fear. Furthermore, it emphasizes that perfect love casts out all fear. This is especially true for believers, as we have obtained peace with God through the blood of Jesus. When we comprehend that the fear of the Lord is good for us because through it God lovingly guides us, then we have nothing to be terrified of. Consequently, we willingly choose to love Him.
2 Timothy 1:7 (NKJV) - For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind
1 John 4:18 (NKJV) - There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love.
Those Who Neglect Reverence Face Consequences
However, for those who fail to fear the Lord, there is something to be utterly terrified of. Paul, the apostle, acknowledges the terror of God, especially for unbelievers. This knowledge of God urges us to preach the Gospel, offering salvation to those who believe and sparing them from the impending wrath of God.
2 Corinthians 5:11 (NKJV) - Knowing, therefore, the terror of the Lord, we persuade men; but we are well known to God, and I also trust are well known in your consciences.
Jesus himself advised us to fear God, who has the authority to destroy both body and soul, over fearing mere mortals who can only harm the body. The instruction to work out our salvation with fear and trembling resonates through the teachings; We are to always mindful that God, being just, will judge every deed.
Matthew 10:28 (NKJV) - And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.
2 Corinthians 5:10 (NKJV) - For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad.
On the day of Judgment, if we are found guilty because we do not believe in the only begotten Son of God, Jesus Christ, for our salvation, we will face the penalty of sin–death–leading to eternal damnation and the wrath of God.
Worldly Knowledge vs. True Godly Knowledge
Fearing God, therefore, is the beginning of true knowledge, guiding us to follow the One who leads us to life–-eternal life. It allows us to know the true and only God. In contrast, worldly knowledge deceives by appearing clever, but it cannot save anyone's soul. This type of knowledge only puffs up, causing people to become wise in their own eyes, thinking that they know better than God. Some even deny His existence. However, by professing to be wise they become fools by rejecting the truth and not following Jesus. Therefore, they will face the consequences of those decisions.
Proverbs 3:7 (NKJV) - Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord and depart from evil.
All Given the Opportunity to Choose Wisely
God warns and gives every person the opportunity to choose between life and death: Every person who walks this earth will hear the Gospel. Yet, many will despise this wisdom and instruction, unaware that in Jesus, God has hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.
1 Corinthians 1:18 (NKJV) - For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.
Colossians 2:2-3 (NKJV) - that their hearts may be encouraged, being knit together in love, and attaining to all riches of the full assurance of understanding, to the knowledge of the mystery of God, both of the Father and of Christ, 3 in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.
In conclusion, when reading Proverbs 1:7 with the Gospel of Christ in mind, we discern the benefits of fearing the Lord and the severe consequences of neglecting wisdom and instruction.

Parihaka Day
At this week's service, we commemorate Parihaka Day. At Parihaka, Tohu Kākahi & Te Whiti o Rongomai built a model community and fostered a nonviolent resistance movement against the unjust confiscation (stealing) of Māori land. Their mahi (work) led to conflict with the colonial government. On November 5th, 1881, armed constabulary invaded Parihaka, decimated the community, arrested Tohu and Te Whiti, and imprisoned them (along with many other ploughmen) without trial. Look at this short video about Tohu and Te Whiti and the invasion of Parihaka on November 5th, 1881: The invasion of Parihaka and why it needs to be remembered.
As we remember Parihaka, we might ask ourselves why. Why do we recall and lament the brutal attack on Parihaka? Lament is an oft-ignored practice in the church. We live in a culture that wants to avoid pain at all costs, to not engage in what's difficult, to push it to the side. The comment, "oh, that happened in the past, we just need to get over it," seems (at least to me) an act of avoidance and, more precisely, a way to dodge doing the hard work of engaging with our preconceived ideas, personal biases, and unwillingness to change. Lament can be a vital way to pry the door open, confront ourselves and injustice, and start a journey toward healing, wholeness, and life.
Lament is an opportunity to bring before God all that is not right with the world, where we have failed, and where we need God to enter and bring justice, reconciliation, and peace within ourselves, with our neighbours and on the land.
Lament is a profoundly biblical practice. The cries of the ancient Hebrew people living under the tyranny of Egypt (Exodus), Psalms, Lamentations, and Jesus' prayer in the garden of Gethsemane are all examples of lament. They are honest, raw, heartfelt cries to God for deliverance and justice. I love what Barbra A. Holmes says about lament (she is particularly talking about communal lament):
Lament is risky speech. It's risky because it challenges power structures, calls for justice, and makes demands on our relationships with "the powers that be," one another, and God. Lament allows the pain to escape and stitches us to our neighbours. God calls us to weep with those who weep. Lament gives us back our voice; it helps us say the unsayable. Lament is a collective response to tyranny and injustice. Lament is work that prepares us for action and resistance. It's art that heals our weary souls (Crisis Contemplation, pg. 96-96). Lament is a gateway to newness.
So, why do we remember? We remember, and we lament because in doing so, we challenge the arrangements of the world, give voice to our pain, call God into the situation(s), and make room for God to enter and, maybe just maybe, for God to act in ways that bring healing and wholeness to us and for us, individually and collective.
As we remember Parihaka and lament our church's complicity in the carnage there, may God challenge us and inspire us in our work of justice and peace. May the past events not define us but instead catalyse us into people who, without fear and guilt, confront the biases and prejudices in ourselves (I have heaps), church, and community and work to build a better future for our kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids in the years to come.
Peace.
------
God of peace and justice, you called Te Whiti o Rongomai and Tohu Kākahi to lead their people to struggle for justice by peaceful means; may we defend the rights of the powerless and build our communities based on mutual care and love; through Jesus Christ, the prince of peace. Amen (For All the Saint, Vol. 2, pg. 787).

Alone with his thoughts he sat in an old weathered leather chair, not the soft kind, but the kind like cowhide leather
For many years he sat by the window overlooking hay fields mown twice a year, once at the end of spring and then a better harvest at the end of summer
The chair was where his stories were conceived, like baby embryos conceived and nurtured through gentle respect and love
The man’s name was Fred, tall, thin, wiry gray haired, quiet
Fred spoke through his stories; they, his stories, happened later in life
At 69, he was happiest with a lead pencil in hand birthing babies on loose leaf ink paper that he clipped together with homemade paper clips
Stories all related to his spirit, Fred wrote from his heart
His stories were his alone, save his friend, Joe Louis who had lived with Fred since they were both in their 20’s
Joe Luis often asked Fred to read his stories to him, since Joe Luis could read into the stories nibbles of inspiration that only Joe knew were from him
It was how he wove himself into Fred’s stories; his way of living forever with Fred
Both boys knew that one day the world would know of their pure love for each other
Joe and Fred had met on a carpenter’s job, both hired as carpenter apprentices by a master carpenter in a small village to the East of where their two story Acadian style crafted home sat on the prairie under a haven of fifteen oaks
An isolated existence they preferred; carefully and lovingly they took care of each other
Joe Luis, a bit younger than Fred, by about 5 years which might make him, let me see, 64 years
The boys were self-sufficient in all their needs
Wanting for nothing, they thanked their Heavenly Father for everything
Fred and Joe Luis, not religious, but spiritual, acknowledged everything they were AND were blessed with came from their Father in heaven
Each and every single day since they had taken up residence together they prayed together, morning, noon and before bedtime
Much of what Fred wrote were Psalms as King David of the Old Testament wrote to God, Praising God for His love, protection, goodness, and might
With an humble heart Fred poured his heart out to his Master, his Glory, his God
Never seen together in public arenas, the boys were careful not to cause suspicion
Yet as single units, not as a couple, they met needs in the community where they recognized needs
Silently, only they knew, mostly through anonymous actions, how they gave of themselves and their resources
Happiness abounded on their place; birds sang, sweet smelling herbs and flowers flourished
Each year on their anniversary they toasted with mulberry wine in two smallish, chipped ball mason jars topped with a couple of mulberries and one bitter red one for aesthetics
Their anniversary was during the summer when the mulberries were in season
Joe Luis baked a fig cake since the figs were in season, too
The boys loved the outdoors, therefore in celebration they sat under a couple of white flowering crepe myrtles, that faded into the white clouds in the sky on cedar chairs painted sky blue that Fred had crafted
They ate fig cake and drank mulberry wine supported on an oak table crafted by Joe Louis
The boys grew older and more feeble as the years passed
On their 75 anniversary almost to the second Fred and Joe took naps side by side in their hammocks floating, supported by giant oaks
At their passing if I’m doing the math accurately. Fred was about 100 and Joe Luis was about 96
They woke in the hands of their Master welcoming them into heaven with the words, “Welcome, Good and Faithful servants
Et c’est ça la ‘tit histoire de Fred et Joe Louis
And that is the little story of Fred and Joe Luis
A story crafted by the Barefoot 🦶 Cajun inspired by all couples who live in unspoken love high above the clouds on a Southwest flight between Chicago and Houston

God Gives What Is Good
1 The Lord says, “All you who are thirsty,
come and drink.
Those of you who do not have money,
come, buy and eat!
Come buy wine and milk
without money and without cost.
2 Why spend your money on something that is not real food?
Why work for something that doesn’t really satisfy you?
Listen closely to me, and you will eat what is good;
your soul will enjoy the rich food that satisfies.
3 Come to me and listen;
listen to me so you may live.
I will make an agreement with you that will last forever.
I will give you the blessings I promised to David.
4 I made David a witness of my power for all nations,
a ruler and commander of many nations.
5 You will call for nations that you don’t yet know.
And these nations that do not know you will run to you
because of the Lord your God,
because of the Holy One of Israel who honors you.”
6 So you should look for the Lord before it is too late;
you should call to him while he is near.
7 The wicked should stop doing wrong,
and they should stop their evil thoughts.
They should return to the Lord so he may have mercy on them.
They should come to our God, because he will freely forgive them.
8 The Lord says, “My thoughts are not like your thoughts.
Your ways are not like my ways.
9 Just as the heavens are higher than the earth,
so are my ways higher than your ways
and my thoughts higher than your thoughts.
10 Rain and snow fall from the sky
and don’t return without watering the ground.
They cause the plants to sprout and grow,
making seeds for the farmer
and bread for the people.
11 The same thing is true of the words I speak.
They will not return to me empty.
They make the things happen that I want to happen,
and they succeed in doing what I send them to do.
12 “So you will go out with joy
and be led out in peace.
The mountains and hills will burst into song before you,
and all the trees in the fields will clap their hands.
13 Large cypress trees will grow where thornbushes were.
Myrtle trees will grow where weeds were.
These things will be a reminder of the Lord’s promise,
and this reminder will never be destroyed.”

The Fear of God
Different from but related to the fears we often experience is what the scriptures describe as “godly fear” (Hebrews 12:28) or “the fear of the Lord” (Job 28:28; Proverbs 16:6; Isaiah 11:2–3). Unlike worldly fear that creates alarm and anxiety, godly fear is a source of peace, assurance, and confidence.
But how can anything associated with fear be edifying or spiritually helpful?
The righteous fear I am attempting to describe encompasses a deep feeling of reverence, respect, and awe for the Lord Jesus Christ (see Psalm 33:8; 96:4), obedience to His commandments (see Deuteronomy 5:29; 8:6; 10:12; 13:4; Psalm 112:1), and anticipation of the Final Judgment and justice at His hand. Thus, godly fear grows out of a correct understanding of the divine nature and mission of the Lord Jesus Christ, a willingness to submit our will to His will, and a knowledge that every man and woman will be accountable for his or her own sins in the Day of Judgment (see D&C 101:78; Articles of Faith 1:2).
As the scriptures certify, godly fear “is the beginning of knowledge” (Proverbs 1:7), “the instruction of wisdom” (Proverbs 15:33), a “strong confidence” (Proverbs 14:26), and “a fountain of life” (Proverbs 14:27).
Please note that godly fear is linked inextricably to an understanding of the Final Judgment and our individual accountability for our desires, thoughts, words, and acts (see Mosiah 4:30). The fear of the Lord is not a reluctant apprehension about coming into His presence to be judged. I do not believe we will be afraid of Him at all. Rather, it is the prospect in His presence of facing things as they really are about ourselves and having “a perfect knowledge” (2 Nephi 9:14; see also Alma 11:43) of all our rationalizations, pretenses, and self-deceptions. Ultimately, we will be left without excuse.
Every person who has lived or will yet live upon the earth “shall be brought to stand before the bar of God, to be judged of him according to [his or her] works whether they be good or whether they be evil” (Mosiah 16:10). If our desires have been for righteousness and our works good, then the judgment bar will be pleasing (see Jacob 6:13; Enos 1:27; Moroni 10:34). And at the last day we will “be rewarded unto righteousness” (Alma 41:6).
Conversely, if our desires have been for evil and our works wicked, then the judgment bar will be a cause of dread. “We shall not dare to look up to our God; and we would fain be glad if we could command the rocks and the mountains to fall upon us to hide us from his presence” (Alma 12:14). And at the last day we will “have [our] reward of evil” (Alma 41:5).
As summarized in Ecclesiastes:
“Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.
“For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil” (Ecclesiastes 12:13–14).
My beloved brothers and sisters, godly fear dispels mortal fears. It even subdues the haunting concern that we never can be good enough spiritually and never will measure up to the Lord’s requirements and expectations. In truth, we cannot be good enough or measure up relying solely upon our own capacity and performance. Our works and desires alone do not and cannot save us. “After all we can do” (2 Nephi 25:23), we are made whole only through the mercy and grace available through the Savior’s infinite and eternal atoning sacrifice (see Alma 34:10, 14). Certainly, “we believe that through the Atonement of Christ, all mankind may be saved, by obedience to the laws and ordinances of the gospel” (Articles of Faith 1:3).
Godly fear is loving and trusting in Him. As we fear God more completely, we love Him more perfectly. And “perfect love casteth out all fear” (Moroni 8:16). I promise the bright light of godly fear will chase away the dark shadows of mortal fears (see D&C 50:25) as we look to the Savior, build upon Him as our foundation, and press forward on His covenant path with consecrated commitment.

30th December >> Mass Readings (USA)
Sixth day within the octave of Christmas
(Liturgical Colour: White: B (2))
First Reading
1 John 2:12-17
Those who do the will of God remain forever.
I am writing to you, children, because your sins have been forgiven for his name’s sake.
I am writing to you, fathers, because you know him who is from the beginning.
I am writing to you, young men, because you have conquered the Evil One.
I write to you, children, because you know the Father.
I write to you, fathers, because you know him who is from the beginning.
I write to you, young men, because you are strong and the word of God remains in you, and you have conquered the Evil One.
Do not love the world or the things of the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, sensual lust, enticement for the eyes, and a pretentious life, is not from the Father but is from the world. Yet the world and its enticement are passing away. But whoever does the will of God remains forever.
The Word of the Lord
R/ Thanks be to God.
Responsorial Psalm
Psalm 96:7-8a, 8b-9, 10
R/ Let the heavens be glad and the earth rejoice!
Give to the LORD, you families of nations,
give to the LORD glory and praise;
give to the LORD the glory due his name!
R/ Let the heavens be glad and the earth rejoice!
Bring gifts, and enter his courts;
worship the LORD in holy attire.
Tremble before him, all the earth.
R/ Let the heavens be glad and the earth rejoice!
Say among the nations: The LORD is king.
He has made the world firm, not to be moved;
he governs the peoples with equity.
R/ Let the heavens be glad and the earth rejoice!
Gospel Acclamation
Hebrews 1:1-2
Alleluia, alleluia.
A holy day has dawned upon us.
Come, you nations, and adore the Lord.
Today a great light has come upon the earth.
Alleluia, alleluia.
Gospel
Luke 2:36-40
She spoke about the child to all who were awaiting the redemption of Jerusalem.
There was a prophetess, Anna, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was advanced in years, having lived seven years with her husband after her marriage, and then as a widow until she was eighty-four. She never left the temple, but worshiped night and day with fasting and prayer. And coming forward at that very time, she gave thanks to God and spoke about the child to all who were awaiting the redemption of Jerusalem.
When they had fulfilled all the prescriptions of the law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee, to their own town of Nazareth. The child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom; and the favor of God was upon him.
The Gospel of the Lord
R/ Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.
