A Not-So-Brief and Hopefully Canon-Accurate Explanation of the 1996 WHS Yellowjackets Soccer Team
(Caveat: I am not an expert in soccer or soccer tactics, but as I’m writing I want to at least try to explain how I think this team functions on the field. I hope this is at least entertaining, and hopefully a resource.)
Tumblr media
Formation
It seems like Coach Bill Martinez runs a classic 4-4-2, with four backs (two center backs, two full backs on the wings), four midfielders (two center, two side), and two forwards. Based on the glimpse we see of States in the pilot, we can make a few informed guesses as to who plays what role. However, we see the last few minutes of stoppage time, and don’t see certain named characters—specifically Mari—on the field. Substitutions were probably made.
Goalkeeper
Tumblr media
Vanessa “Van” Palmer (No. 1). One of the few characters that we can definitively assign to a position. Good for Van!
Backs
Center Backs: Unknown and Unknown
We see No. 18 playing back, close to Van, and not advancing with the rest of the team—a purely defensive role. This may be the soon-to-be late Rachel Goldman.
Full Backs: Laura Lee (Left, No. 2) and Unknown
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Laura Lee we see on the left wing, behind Allie and not advancing. To me this says she’s the full back on the left.
The other is probably Mari, who was subbed out earlier in the game or was otherwise not playing, but Mari could be a center back.
Midfielders
Center Midfielders: Shauna Shipman (Left-Center, No. 6) and Natalie Scatorccio (Right-Center, No. 7)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Shauna appears to be coordinating the offensive action on the left wing, trying to bail Allie out but playing too much of an attacking midfield role to drop back and bail her out without playing out of position—which Tai does.
Nat seems to be central as well, given that we see glimpses of her in some of the shots. She hustles at the start but throttles back which to me says she’s playing midfielder.
Side Midfielders: Allie Stevens (Left, No. 11) and Lottie Matthews (Right, No. 5)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Allie is a tricky player to place, because we only see her at her worst moment: far back, near the box, losing possession. I almost had her as a full back for this very reason. But she choked hard, which to me says she dropped back with the goal of advancing the ball up the wing and possibly doing what Tai does—get it to Shauna, get it back, get it to Jackie.
Like Nat, Lottie is hustling but remains distant from the antics of Allie’s botched advance. She seems more attenuated from the central pitch. Hence, she plays the right wing.
Forwards
Jackie Taylor (No. 9) and Taissa Turner (No. 8)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Again, this feels pretty straightforward. Jackie and Tai are both playing offense, though we see Tai bolt out of position to recover the ball when Allie blows it. Tai feeds the ball up to Shauna who feeds it back to Tai once she gets back into position. Jackie stays forward the whole time.
Hopefully this is helpful or interesting to someone!

Rachel is (was?) That person who always sits in the front of the class. She arrives early and takes the first seat when it isn't assigned. It made perfect sense for her to sit at the front of the plane because she is always in the front, ready to take on the world, so to speak. She was the first chair flutist as well, so again is very accustomed to being in the front. Even when on the bench, she was never relaxed, always attentive and cheering the team on, paying attention and soaking up anything she could.

The Pebble and the Penguin (1995)
Tumblr media
With its “Who cares?” plot, dull characters, tedious pace, and unmemorable songs, The Pebble and the Penguin is a prime example of the very worst in children’s entertainment. I wish I could say that at least the animation was good, but for every sequence whose use of color is inspired, there’s another that highlights the ugly the character designs. I doubt even little children will bother to watch this all the way through.
Hubie (voiced by Martin Short) is a shy, romantic penguin who wants nothing more than to find the perfect pebble for his beloved Marina (Annie Golden). When “the evil penguin” Drake (Tim Curry) gets wind of Hubie’s intentions, he throws him out to sea. Meeting his new best friend, a rockhopper penguin who dreams of flying named Rocko (James Belushi), the two birds begin their trip back to Antarctica.
This film is as dull as my summary makes it sound. Often, I find myself unable to tell how much longer a good film will last because it breaks conventions, or I have no idea how the hero could triumph. I had no idea when The Pebble and the Penguin would end because nothing that happens ever matters. The plot centers around two frigid birds who want to mate. Even if you could scrounge together any excitement at this concept, the lovebirds share only one scene and have zero chemistry. For their union to be official, weenie Hubie has to find a fancy rock. If he had any brains in his skull, he’d hide it in his hat, or tie it around his neck using his scarf. Instead, he fumbles with it over and over, padding the film out to an interminable length. Meanwhile, the father of all one-dimensional villains schemes in his skull-shaped castle and brags about how evil he is. As for all of the other characters, you have a better chance of remembering what you had for breakfast 34 days ago than anything about them.
After Disney’s success with Beauty and the Beast, Don Bluth and Gary Goldman (who chose to go uncredited) aimed to make a film for preschoolers and the dating crowd. I can sort of see how that idea led to this travesty. Both films are romantic musicals and feature an unconventional romantic lead while a pompous, more traditionally handsome would-be suitor pursues the female. The lady, meanwhile, questions the rules of her world. In every other way, Pebble and the Penguin is the antithesis of the Disney classic. For one, none of the songs are memorable, or even necessary. The romance is unconvincing and adds nothing to the whole, but without it, the razor-thin plot would get blown away by a gentle breeze. The female lead is so useless she might as well have been a sandwich for the males to duel over.
Children won’t care about the romance. Adults will find this film - like many of Don Bluth’s others - to be juvenile, saccharine, and toothless. It kind of makes me mad. Talented illustrators and animators wasted their time bringing this useless story to life. Even worse, I had to sit down and watch it 22 years later! If you remember it fondly and think it might be fair entertainment for your children, watch it by yourself first. Time how long it takes for you to peek at your cellphone, or if that’s out of reach, grab a straight razor. I say ten minutes, tops. (On Blu-ray, September 17, 2017)

Chapter Six - Prayers
Chapter Six - Prayers
—-
1996-
Late last night, Misty had heated up the blade of the axe she used to cut Coach Ben’s leg off, and pressed it to his wound. He screamed for only a moment, before it tapered off- stopping abruptly.
When you got up to check if he was still alive, Misty was wrapping the new burned wound on his leg, and his breathing was harsh and heavy, but he was breathing.
With the silent forest, save the crackling of the fire and the sounds of the wilderness, you eventually fell asleep- telling yourself that morning will come, and so will rescue.
When you woke up, there was no rescue, and all of the girls whispered that it would simply come later in the day.
In the meantime, the grave digging started.
They weren’t finished until noon, using scrap bits of metal from the plane as shovels. Everyone stands around the small plot of graves, marked by pieces of metal with names drawn in marker.
You wonder faintly if that’s what they would have wanted.
Now, the earth is freshly scared with the imprint of the bodies, raising up the soil, but soon- the scars will fade. The ground will level out again. And besides for the metal marking the graves- no one would know they’re there.
“Before we took off,” Van starts, staring at the grave right in front of her, “I heard Rachel say that she was going to see Oasis at the Meadowlands next month. She was really excited. And she’s never gonna hear “Wonderwall” again.”
You can’t help but dig your feet into the ground, the tip of your Converse making a small indent in the soft soil. You thought back to what Shauna said to Javi. Is it really like sleeping? Does the dirt feel like a blanket? Are they warm? Cold?
“Come on,” Laura Lee says after a moment. “Let’s join hands.”
Squished between two freshmen, you hold out your hands, and the two girls on either side of you tenderly intwine their hands with yours.
“We’ll pray for them,” she says, and you almost smile- because what else would you expect from Laura Lee?
Slowly, all of the girls follow suit, grabbing hands, closing their eyes.
“Rachel,” Laura Lee starts, “You just moved up from JV, so we didn’t really know you. But, in Trig, you never confuses your secants and your cosecants. You seemed really smart. Anyone else?”
“I saw her carry a flute case once,” Van rushes out.
“Oh, Lord, please accept Rachel Goldman into your arms so that she may fill your kingdom with music.” She licks her lips, and blinks harshly. “Please accept Coach Martinez into your glory, too, and flight attendant Janet, pilot Robert, pilot Fred. Even thought I walk through the valley of the shadow of death…”
The world seems to fade out, and you faintly remember the funeral your mother had taken you too, the open casket, the eerie stillness of the body of a woman you never knew. But she knew you.
Your mother had told you not to be scared of death. But she had never been to the wilderness before.
“The Lord is my salvation. Whom shall I fear? The Lord is my strength. Whom shall I fear?”
“I’m going for a walk,” Tai announces suddenly, letting go of the others hands, walking towards the forest, away from the graves.
And soon, everyone followed suit, their hands dropping.
—-
“This is all we have?” one of the girls asks, a group gathered around the small collection of food and drinks the flight attendant was giving out.
“Yeah. We gotta ration,” Van says. She studies the small collection, before glancing at Shauna. “Okay. Cut them,” she says, leaving the knife next to the food. “Split this water,” she says to another girl, giving her a plastic water bottle.
“Well,” Jackie starts, looking at a small chocolate covered treat Shauna had given to her, “Maybe we can find something in the forest. I saw some berries-”
You perk up. “What did they look like?”
Jackie frowns. “Uh… they looked like little oranges.”
“Oh, no, you can’t eat those.” Everyone looks at you, confused and curious. You feel your cheeks warm up, but a suddenly realization comes to you. You are useful. You know the plants. “They’re probably Buckthorn berries, which are native around here. If you eat them, they cause swelling of uh, the nervous system, I think.” Another moment of silence. “My mother is a botanist, so…”
“Shit, really?” Van asks, looking around the woods. “You know what we can eat from here?”
You nod, feeling a little proud. “Um, elderberries should be around here too. If we cook those, then they’re not poisonous, but uncooked one’s are.”
“Okay,” Shauna nods, “we’ll have a little more to go off of.”
Akilah starts rationing out the water using the little plastic from the cart, everyone reminding her not to spill any.
Suddenly, Travis stands up and marches over to the pile of food, grabbing a bag of CornNuts.
“Dude!” Can shouted after him.
“Travis, what are you doing?” Jackie asks, and all of you watch as he marches off, not even looking back.
You stare at the small bag he has clutched in his fist, your stomach twisting angrily at the sight.
“Uh… Maybe you didn’t notice, but we’re kind of in a situation here, Flex.” Lottie says.
“Don’t.” Nat says.
Travis turns around for just a moment, leveling a sharp glare at Lottie, before continuing into the trees.
“Who died and made him king of snacks?” Lottie spits.
“His dad, Lottie. Literally… his fucking dad.”
“Nat’s right,” Jackie sighs. “We should cut him some slack.”
“I guess it’s fine if we all starve to death, as long as Travis’s feelings are okay…” Mari says.
“No one is starving to death. When the rescue team gets here, it’ll be fine, but for now-” Jackie starts.
“You mean if it gets here.”
“Don’t say that, Van.” Jackie says, looking slightly shocked.
“It… has been three days, Jackie.”
She smiles a bit, whether to cover up her true feelings, or if she really believes that they’ll come, you don’t know.
“They’re coming.”
—-
“Guys!” Tai shouted, returning finally from her long walk, panting. “Guys! There’s a lake! There’s a lake. I saw it from over that hill,” she points, “It looks about 4 or 5 miles away.”
You couldn’t help a small smile from winding its way onto your face. Elderberries would grow well in the soil by a lake, and other plants too. Maybe if you could just get there and recognize a few of them, you would remember more, and be able to help more-
“Do you think we can hike it?” Shauna asks.
“It’s pretty rocky,” Taissa breathes, “but yeah.”
“Uh, we, uh, we can’t… we can’t just leave,” Jackie stutters, standing up and gesturing from the plane to the direction Taissa came from.
You can tell she has no support.
“We have two days of water, tops.”
Jackie shakes her head slightly, as if to say “so?”
“And then what?” Tai continues. “Just sit around and die?” Your stomach twists.
Before all of this, you had things you wanted to do, a life you wanted to live.
“What of the rescue team comes?”
“Do you think they’re taking their time on purpose?” Taissa looks around, and while some people haven’t accepted it- you’re not a fool. If they were coming, they would have come by now. “If they knew where we were then they would be here already.”
“You don’t know that,” Jackie sneers, not unkindly, but she gets the point across.
“What do you think, Coach?”
Everyone turns to the man who you once thought wouldn’t make it through the night, now barely alive, sitting on a plane seat the girls had dragged outside. He relied on Misty for everything.
“I don’t- I don’t know,” he says, clutching his amputated leg. “Uh, I mean, you’d have to leave me behind. But, whatever.”
“We could make you a stretcher,” Tai declares, looking around. But at the first inkling that going to the lake would keep you all alive for longer- most of the girls were swayed.
“Oh, okay,” Jackie laughs.
“Seriously. If we take turns carrying it-”
“N-no! This-this is bullshit. I say no. Okay? No way.”
After Jackie’s outburst, no one speaks for a second. You look around the group of girls gathered, and most of them can’t even look at Jackie. They’ve already made their decision. You look at Nat, but her eyes are fixed to the floor.
“Let’s put it to a vote,” Tai says, staring at Jackie. “All in favor of waiting here?” Jackie raises her hand. Only a few other girls follow suit. “All in favor of the lake?” Tai raises her hand, and after a moment, you do as well.
Natalie raises her hand too.
Even Shauna raises her hand, which earns her a scorching glare from Jackie, but before anything else can happen, Tai speaks.
“Then it’s settled.”
—-
You stuffed all your clothes into your bag, a hairbrush, other toiletries- and finally, after a moment, you grabbed the small glass cube. Your mom had gifted it to you a few years ago, back when she was around more, before your dad had left, and she hadn’t thrown herself into your work and slowly stared to forget about you.
The rest of these girls probably all had people who cared for them. Who wanted them to come home. You wondered if your mother had even noticed your absence.
Inside the small glass cube was a preserved sample of deadly nightshade. A small stem with a few berries, one leaf. You wondered often if the poison still worked.
Slowly, everyone filed into a rough line, and you all began your descent to the lake.
You wondered faintly if Laura Lee should have lead you all in prayer before you started the hike.

Michael Schorr Dan Dreiberg/Nite Owl (Watchmen) Vs. Wesley Dodds/Sandman I Beth Kane/Alice Vs. Eric Cohen Eric Strauss Vs. Frieda Goren Gim Allon Vs. Booster Gold/Michael Carter (ignore my typo in the image) Green Lantern (Hal Jordan) Vs. Jesus of Nazareth (New Earth) Harleen Quinzel Vs. Jonathan Osterman (Watchmen) Katherine Kane Vs. Morris Edelstein/Morgan Edge (Earth-One) Miriam Bätzel/Miri Marvel (DC Bombshells) Vs. Moyshe Nakhman Myndi Mayer Vs. Nyssa Raatko Rachel Goldman/Sublime (Wildstorm) Vs. Rory Regan Sebastian Ives Vs. Ursula Zandt (Watchmen) Willow Zimmerman Vs. Zatanna Zatara (DC Bombshells)
This will be split into 4 rounds each divided in two (hence the two sides), and a final round. there's gonna be a day to vote for each poll, and you can find all of them in the #DC Jewish tournament tag. Starting with Round 1A, the first 8 matches I'll post all in one batch, and so on (I think it'll be clearer once I post them) I. I'll post the entirety of round 1A once this post reaches 10 notes bc I'm anxious and I need to know there is an audience, and 10 notes in enough for me. I'll post round 1B once the voting for round 1A will be closed, and do the same for the rest.
some explanations for some characters that might not seem like they fit here: All but three characters here were listed as Jews (I am Jewish, I can say that) in the DC Database category page and I've made sure there's a source to that (DCEU Barry calling himself a Jewish Boy, DC Superhero Girls Babs being in a Happy Hanukka post from the show's account, etc). The three characters that weren't are Bruce Wayne (Jewish by association with Kate Kane bc her writers don't know how Judaism works and once made her dad Jewish which would make his sister, Bruce's mom Jewish and make him Jewish), Booster Gold (confirmed to be Jewish by Jeff Katz, a Booster Gold writer, on Twitter) and Cissie King-Jones (I decided she's Jewish, and it's my poll, so shut up), and I have explanations for them all.
Enjoy!

There's something really interesting about how insulated a lot of the girls are, but Rachel was really only friends with akilah on the jv team. She wasn't close with the varsity team, but she had friends in her classes. Laura lee and van overhead things about her, and she was friendly. She shared information about her hobbies and wishes, and she wasn't going to continue on in soccer. Music was her true passion.

bored at work so here’s my proposed yellowjackets crash timeline, based on information from canon as well as my own [DATA EXPUNGED]. under the cut because not all of my mutuals are all the way caught up!
mid-may 1996 - the yellowjackets win states. during a scrimmage to prep for nationals, tai breaks allie’s leg by accident. shauna and jeff have sex and wilderness baby is conceived.
late may 1996 - malcolm matthews rents a private plane to take the team to nationals in seattle. jackie gives shauna her heart necklace as a good luck charm before the flight takes off. somewhere in canada, the plane veers off course and crashes, killing both pilots, the flight attendants, coach martínez, and team member rachel goldman. coach ben loses his leg, and misty destroys the flight recorder.
june 1996 - after around three days, the team finds the lake, and more importantly, the cabin (and Dead Cabin Guy). coach ben teaches the team how to hunt and prepare wild game. natalie and travis are selected as the team’s designated hunters. while foraging, the team discovers Dead Cabin Guy’s, airplane, which seems to be intact and has a full tank of gas.
july 1996 - lottie runs out of medicine and begins having visions/hallucinations. laura lee baptizes lottie in the lake. shauna attempts to abort her pregnancy with taissa’s assistance, but does not go through with it. taissa begins sleepwalking.
august-september 1996 - taissa leads an expedition to find help, and van is severely injured by a pack of wolves. shauna tells jackie about her pregnancy, but not about jeff. jackie reads shauna’s diary. a barely-conscious van is brought back to the cabin for emergency surgery, and laura lee decides that the team needs actual medical help.
late september-october 1996 - laura lee announces she’s going to take the dead guy’s plane and find help. she successfully gets the plane into the air but it explodes over the lake. the team decides to throw the doomcoming party, and things go south very quickly. javi disappears.
end of october 1996 - lottie kills the bear. after refusing to take part in a prayer of thanks “to the ancient gods of the sky and the dirt,” jackie argues with shauna and ends their friendship. the team takes shauna’s side and jackie decides to spend the night outside. overnight, a snowstorm hits and she is killed. the team decides to wait to bury jackie’s body until the ground thaws.
december 1996 - 2 months are stated to have occurred between end of season 1 and the beginning of season 2. shauna is seven months into her pregnancy. shit continues to get worse.
january 1998 - after 19 months, the team is finally rescued. the known survivors are shauna, misty, natalie, lottie, taissa, travis, and van.
