perfectionist, not. sae itoshi
chapter four - oblivious redhead
"um... wanna do something else?" i questioned, the fact that it was embarrassing for the both of us was... um... awkward.
"...sure." he was literally agreeing to everything i suggest, say, comment, maybe he just found me annoying... i dropped myself onto the bed, my arms spread. "like what?" i mumbled, finding my eyelids heavier and heavier.
"just go sleep." he replied, glancing at me over the shoulder. "mhm." i crawled to the pillow, but my arms were weak, sore, i just dipped down into the bed, not even caring about the blankets keeping me warm.
that night, the lights went dim, a blanket right cover my small body, an arm snaked around my waist and the scent of sweetness filled the room.
a thing i wanted to do back in Japan, is to shop. so this morning, i forced Sae to come shopping with me, of course, he declined but with the power of my puppy eyes, he finally said yes with a grumpy groan and massaging his temples.
i wore a white tank top with light blue jeans, topping it off with air jordans and a white jacket. Sae wore a creamy striped button up, regular jeans, IV shades to hide from fans and Adidas og superstars.
"let's goooo!" i pointed a finger towards the azure sky, eyes closed with a smile and grabbing his wrists. he could only sigh like a mother, facepalming himself. we entered a shopping mall, with loads of fans recognising the both of us, of course, his redhead is always easy to identify.
we continued to shop and i couldn't help but to glance or stare at him from time to time, my heart started to beat faster whenever i see his side profile, when he chuckled at my careless mistakes, his laughter ringed in my ears like a melody while butterflies started flying around my stomach.
i'm sure i'm just sick. "you okay?" he stopped, giving a glance, "y-yeah." i stared at my shoes, maybe i was too carried away from the thoughts... "you're red." he placed a hand over my forehead, catching me off guard. why was he like this...?
he surely wasn't like this before.
"c'mon, let's go to the restroom, you can wash your face." he guided me, walking to the nearest restroom that was not too far away. i wanted to decline the offer so bad but, nothing came out of my mouth, it was like i was taped over, it was like i had a disability.
he grabbed the shopping bags from me, pushing me in the restroom while waiting outside without a word.
i fiddled with my fingers, staring at myself in the mirror. he was right... i was red. like red red. what the hell? i traced my cheek, drawing circles on them, what happened?
it didn't look like i was sick or i had a fever... no, not that kind of red. it looked like i was blushing...
too hard.
no.
no way.
no fucking way.
i swear to god, he's a pain in the ass!
how on earth could i fall for him?
especially now?
we headed back to the hotel, but i could stop thinking about that. just what is wrong with me? that redhead has literally the worst hairstyle anyone could have, and yet, he looked like a red flag for being an annoyance.
and yet, now i've fallen for him? now i was siting on the chair, resting my chin on the centre of my palms and he was covering my mind.
after he took his time in the shower, it was my time. like every other night, i did my routine. until i came out, seeing Sae with his legs crossed, perhaps waiting for me?
"come sit here." he patted the space that was in front of him, i obeyed and found my eyes anywhere but on his pretty face.
"is there something going on?" he predicted, i felt like my feelings were just too complex now, i couldn't even put it in words.
"i-i..." i stuttered, finding words for my sentence, it felt like digging a dictionary out of my mind. if i just tell him, but don't tell him that it's him, will it be okay?
"i-i think... i like someone..." i blushed, scratching my scalp, i stole a glance at him.
for him, it looked like his world shattered, but his facial expressions said nothing, barely anything actually. "you've been thinking about him...?" he spoke up, his head was down but his fist was supporting his chin. "y-yeah."
i was thinking about you the whole day, dumbass.
"do i know him?" his tone was kept calm, "i-i guess so..." i found myself staring into his hues, lost in the abyss. "hm. i guess you better confess, he'll be lucky to have you." he looked away.
no way...
was he jealous...?!

Weekly Trend- Red Ballet Flats on Pavement
As the weather cools, the easiest way to transition your summer wardrobe into your Autumn closet is to add a pop of red. From sweaters to scarves, warm tones are staples for Fall. However a new focus has been placed on bright red accessories this season, most notably cherry red bags and scarlet ballet flats.
Tumblr media
Incorporated in runways such as Sandy Liang and Simone Rocha, these slippers have made their way out onto the street and into the circles of It-girls and Pinterest- connoisseurs. Originally popularized by the likes of Brigitte Bardot, the movie star requested tomato red flats to wear in the film And God Created Women (1965). Decades later Chanel created their signature toe-cap pumps, and slowly these shoes have seen their resurgence into the trend-cycle in 2023.
Tumblr media
These shoes have been dressed up and down and every direction; from white mini dresses and lace to regular jeans and a t-shirt, they create a statement without the effort. Celebrities of varying ‘aesthetics’ have thrown on a pair for everyday use. Sofia Richie rocked her Jacquemus’s backless ballerinas during New York fashion week, the same time Sophie Turner dined with Taylor Swift wearing a similar pair. Olivia Rodrigo currently is  often seen in red; if not a dress, then the crimson shoe makes an appearance.
Because of the minimalist appearance of the shoe, it has the ability to work with seemingly almost any outfit. The potential to be timeless is hopeful, as while most trending shoes are specific to one brand/designer (ie. adidas superstars, slip on vans, black converse, sambas), These incredibly versatile shoes can be made by anyone at any price point. While a popular version is sold by Prada for upwards of $950, a more accessible version is sold by Steve Madden for $79. Even further, Primark sells red ballet flats for less than $10.
Tumblr media
How can one not invest in a pair at this rate?

RANDOM CONTEXTUAL RESEARCH, VISUAL REFERENCE, AND WRITINGS?...
pink church! found this through a previous years exposure catalog from a student who had photographed it in their work 'The Dedication to Pink'. The church was created by nz artist and poet, Sam Duckor Jones. I think it really aesthetically and conceptually relates to my alter work. I love their backstory of the pink church as well as their other work as an artist. the vandalisation of the pink church with homophobic and antisemitic hate speech is extremely saddening as well as telling. It is interesting that colour and aesthetic can create such a target for hate, especially when this church was created from pure intention of love and inclusivity. But there is an assumption that it was a mocking of the church or a belittling of the church as a power. I think my work does imply this sense of mocking however there isn't actually any symbolism or real suggestion of anything offensive. I find this interesting that the colour pink and 'typically feminine or queer aesthetics' in the context of religious motifs can alone suggest this feeling of 'blasphemous' simply because we are excluded and limited by this power, the irony is right there.
Tiktoker Addison Rae's online backlash for wearing 'Father, Son, Holy Spirit' bikini. I remember when this was all over TikTok and the internet last year. I find the timeline of Addison Rae's career and change of fanbase so interesting, just over a year ago her target audience was conservative white tweens and frat boys, but through her marketing and styling she has managed to become somewhat of an icon in queer and femme media culture spaces. she had actually previous been 'exposed' as a trump supporter as well as receiving some hate for reposting an anti Black Lives Matter video. However if you google "Addison Rae cancelled" the first page of results is full of articles about this bikini. I think this scandal was the beginning of her switch in fanbase and fame. suddenly her 'all American girl' image had been shattered and she became a 'Lana del rey', 'bad girl', with a new style and personality. she started being taken seriously in the fashion world for the first time as her stylist changed, she dumped her frat boy TikTok boyfriend and started dating a neon red haired alternative musical artist. her objectively terrible song that she released years ago, which recieved bad reviews and became an online joke, now plays on her new album which features Charli XCX, an extremely popular artist in the queer community. all of a sudden her political past and flaws have been erased and she has become an icon to those who once hated her. this goes back to what I previously spitballed about aesthetics and sub genres, today you only have to appear as a political stance through clothing and music culture to be accepted as one. this is not to say that Addison is a conservative cosplaying as a queer icon feminist lol, she very well could be finally exploring who she really is, but either way it has increased her success and erased her past, all through aesthetics!! this is a lot of word vomit but I believe there is so much power in aesthetics and exploring 'low-brow' media content like this actually unlocks important dialogue and questions about societal cultures and treatments.
fake nail cross decals (lol) was just playing with using beauty products as decor motifs for my alter sculpture.
a sad and perhaps slightly irrelevant poem I wrote. just included as I feel my creative writing is a big part of my practice that isn't seen in my immediate physical work.

$79 Billion Industry: How Sneaker Culture Took Over The World
As depicted in the new Ben Affleck film Air, here’s how Michael Jordan and Nike’s iconic Air Jordans transformed the sneakerhead subculture into a $79 billion industry.
— By Starlight Williams | April 27, 2023
Sneakers have come a long way from when they were first invented in 1860s England for the upper-class playing croquet and tennis.
Long worn for function rather than fashion, today sneakers are an entire culture—both a form of self-expression and a high art found in museum exhibits and designer auction houses where a single pair can fetch millions of dollars.
As Ben Affleck’s star-studded film Air depicts, the emergence of sneaker culture can be traced to Nike’s 1984 collaboration with basketball superstar Michael Jordan on their iconic Air Jordans. Here’s the story of sneakers—and the sneakerheads who collect them.
Air Jordans and The Rise of Sneaker Culture
Most sneakerheads credit the advent of their subculture to the rise of athlete-endorsed shoes in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s. Converse’s Chuck Taylor All-Stars had dominated the basketball courts for decades—and brands like Puma and Adidas started to get in on the action.
“What was happening in New York was an intertwining of basketball, hip-hop, and [break dancing],” says Elizabeth Semmelhack, director and senior curator of the Bata Shoe Museum in Toronto, which in 2013 became the first North American museum to devote an exhibit to the history of sneakers.

But what transformed sneaker culture into a true phenomenon was the 1985 release of Nike’s Air Jordan 1s. In 1984, Michael Jordan was a talented rookie who had yet to play in a professional game. Despite that, Nike—better known then as a running shoe company—saw Jordan as the future of their brand and signed him to a five-year, $2.5 million endorsement deal.
Air Jordan 1s were not your grandfather’s basketball shoes. Debuting in bold hues of white, black, and red, Air Jordans were a defiant taunt to the NBA guidelines that required footwear to be 51 percent white. Sensing a marketing opportunity, Nike paid the $5,000 fine players received each time he stepped on the court wearing the shoes. The bet paid off: As Jordan proved to be one of the greatest basketball players of all time, the sneaker’s popularity skyrocketed.
Sneaker culture began to take off beyond the basketball court too. When the influential hip-hop group Run-D.M.C. released their single My Adidas in 1986, it earned the group a first-of-its-kind endorsement deal with the brand. Soon after, Kurt Cobain of the grunge band Nirvana made Converse a symbol of rebellion and youth.
Meanwhile, another cultural shift was taking place as white-collar businesses introduced casual Fridays. “It’s when you have an opening of the male wardrobe,” Semmelhack says. Suddenly, men were allowed to put aside their suits “and wear something one day a week that showed people who they really were.”

Sneakers Become Status Symbols
As sneakers became increasingly coveted, footwear companies turned to generating even more hype by collaborating with celebrities and luxury brands, as well as releasing small batches of limited-edition shoes with eye-popping designs.
Rare sneakers became sought-after among collectors, and the sneaker reseller market flourished. “I have Air Jordan 1, 2, 3, and 5, so I better find 4,” Semmelhack says of the mentality that drove the rise of collectors. As resellers began to mark those shoes up at incredible costs, she adds, it only reinforced how special they were.
Pivotal artists like Rihanna, Travis Scott, and Kanye West defined the shoe game for nearly a decade with their iconic collaborations with brands. And then came the Kardashians.
“The Kardashian era had a huge impact on the culture,” says Jazerai Allen-Lord, a ground-breaking sneaker strategist, designer, and writer. After reality TV star Kim Kardashian married rapper-turned-fashion-designer Kanye West, she and her sisters started to wear his designs, which “helped target a whole new demographic of people to experience sneaker culture. It was a blending of high and low fashion, which the shoe industry never really seen before.”

By the mid-2010s, sneakers had become solid gold status symbols—literally, in the case of hip-hop artist Drake, who in 2016 commissioned a one-of-a-kind pair of Air Jordans wrapped in 24-carat solid gold. The estimated $2.1 million sneakers weighed 50 pounds each.
“Wearing rare and cool sneakers [became] an expression of one’s social status,” says Yuniya (Yuni) Kawamura, professor of sociology at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York. “They want to show off what they have and say that they are slightly better than others.”
But not all sneakerheads are this extreme. “The stereotype is that we are all in this for excess and status,” Allen-Lord says. “It’s a piece of the culture but it isn’t the whole culture.”
What is Real Sneakerhead Culture?
For Xzaiver Griffin, 29, a Florida-based digital marketing manager who has around a hundred pairs of sneakers, collecting has brought him “a true community.”
“I’ve met true friends through sneakers. Whether it was camping out all night for a release back in the day or looking out for one another on release day to get a sneaker you really want, that’s what the sneakerhead culture is to me,” he says, adding that his friends have a group chat called Sneakerhead Alphas named for their fraternity Alpha Phi Alpha.
Sneakers are also how people express their beliefs—for instance, when NBA player Dwyane Wade wore his custom-designed, limited-edition “Black Lives Matter” Li-Nings or NFL placekicker Blair Walsh wore anti-bullying cleats covered in the words “Speak Out.”
“It’s like art,” says Akio Evans, a Baltimore creative who specializes in turning shoes into wearable artwork. “Even though it is a sneaker that is on the shelves or inside of a box inside a store, the very first thing you are doing is admiring what you see. You look at all the pieces and decide which one resonates with you.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Photographer Courtney Salmon's project Please Don't Touch celebrates Black British heritage by examining parallels between sneaker culture and "front rooms"—a room typically found in the homes of Caribbean migrants to the U.K, where everything is kept in pristine condition. Photographs By Courtney Salmon
Decades after their first introduction to the fashion industry, sneakers are finally getting their due as part of our cultural heritage—and particularly how Black culture has shaped that heritage.
“The most impactful moment for the industry in the past three years was Nike, Adidas, and Reebok flat-out acknowledging there would sneaker culture without Black culture,” says Allen-Lord. “It took decades for them to even say that, for them to recognize that without these Black athletes or artists that [championed] their products there would be no sneaker culture.”
Starting, of course, with Michael Jordan. Today, more than 100 million pairs of Air Jordan 1s have been sold worldwide. In April 2023, a pair that Jordan wore in his legendary final NBA season sold for $2.2 million, making them the most expensive sneakers ever to appear at auction.
“It’s 2023, and Nike is still selling the same shoe that was designed almost 40 years ago,” says Allen-Lord. “Because of their permanence and their visibility as a status symbol, every kid aspires to create a shoe line.”
Still, there’s more to do on that front. According to NBC, only 5 percent of sneaker retailers in the U.S. are Black. But Allen-Lord says sneaker culture has also allowed her “to create space and opportunity for Black creatives, specifically women, to get their foot into the door in the sneaker industry.” And with more people at the table, the richer the narrative around sneakers will become.
“Sneaker culture has a strong storytelling heritage,” she says. “Everyone wants to tell their story.”

Aha sparkling water. The denotation of the Aha sparkling water includes an orange background with large white lettering spelling AHA. Underneath this decoration an orange slice on a pink background with bubbles placed throughout the design.
Aha sparkling water. The connotation of the design is that the beverage is refreshing and delicious with a citrus flavor. The orange slice, bright colors, and bubbles give the buyer a happy and refreshing feeling, hinting at the flavor present in the drink.
Jumpman logo. This design has the iconic function of representing one of the most famous dunks Michael Jordan had in his career. The logo is based on a photo of this dunk and has an iconic function because it has a physical resemblance to the person the logo represents.
Toaster oven warning. The red triangle present on the toaster oven has an indexical function because it uses design elements to communicate what is being represented. The red is commonly associated with heat and the wavy lines look like the hot air coming from fire/heat. This design is clearly trying to communicate that you should be careful when operating because it gets very hot.
Bluetooth logo. This design has a symbolic function because the meaning has to be learned, you can't learn what Bluetooth means just by looking at the logo. It must be accompanied by further explanation. The symbolic function is to show you that you can connect to the speaker by using Bluetooth on your phone and that button allows you to do so.
Adidas superstar shoes. These shoes are referencing a past style that was created in the 1980s. Although the make-up and material of the shoe have changed over the years, they wanted to provide the same style to consumers today. They are trying to bring back a nostalgic feeling to those who were there and reach a new generation by capturing a different time period and making it alive today, making everyone feel connected to the past.
