The way Jonathan so confidently says, "because if I told her the truth, she'd just throw her dreams out the window to come out here and be with me"
Like, bro. My dude. Are we talking about the same Nancy Wheeler here? The Nancy Wheeler that chose to follow a story rather than listen to your concerns about keeping your job and got you both fired last summer? The same Nancy Wheeler who is CURRENTLY choosing to spend her spring break working on a *school* newspaper rather than fly out to visit you? That Nancy Wheeler is gonna unthinkingly give up her spot at her dream college so she can move to California and be your girlfriend?
My guy. You are not Nancy Wheeler's first priority. And it is very likely that by not being honest with Nancy about your college plans, what you're actually doing is protecting yourself from admitting that.

this one is inspired by this fic by fivecenturiesverse
“Nancy and I broke up.”
“Shit,” Steve says, somehow managing to sound surprised. As if he and Nancy weren’t teetering on the verge of something throughout spring break. “That sucks, man.”
“It…was a long time coming, I think,” Jonathan admits. There’s a soft thump, like Steve clapping Jonathan’s shoulder in solidarity.
They don’t say anything else, and Eddie almost leaves to go eavesdrop somewhere else when Jonathan speaks.
“Are you…going to do anything about that?”
“About what?” Steve asks, genuine confusion in his voice.
“Nancy.”
“Oh.” Steve doesn’t say anything for a moment, and Eddie braces himself to hear the truth. That he’s going to ask her out, ask to get married, ask her to have his six little nuggets and travel across the country together. “No.”
Eddie’s brain record scratches.
“Really?” Jonathan sounds rightfully skeptical.
“Yeah, I don’t…” he lets out a nervous laugh, and Eddie can picture him raising a hand to scratch at the back of his head. “There’s…someone else, and I can’t…she’s amazing. Nancy, I mean. She’s, like, this huge person in my mind, you know? I wanted to love her so much, and I convinced myself she loved me back because it was easier than admitting I was clinging onto something that wasn’t meant to be. I kind of put my whole future on her. Figured if I could love any girl, it’d be the perfect one right in front of me.” He laughs again, hollow. “She was right, to call it bullshit. I don’t know what I was thinking.”
“Oh.”
“Yeah.”
“If it helps, I think she really did love you,” Jonathan says, sounding fake as all hell.
Steve brushes him off. “No you don’t. It’s okay, it was never really real. Not like you guys. That…that really sucks, man.”
“It’s for the best, I think.” There’s a long pause. “You said…if you could love a girl, it would be Nancy.”
“…I did say that,” Steve says warily. Eddie has a feeling he really, really shouldn’t be listening to this, but he can’t bring himself to back away.
“Do you…are you…”
“If you’re going to be an asshole, I should tell you that I’ve been working out a lot since ‘83,” Steve interrupts.
“I noticed,” Jonathan mutters.
What.
“What?”
“What?”
“I…nothing,” Steve sighs.
There’s another, longer pause, filled with tension that Jonathan decides to take an emotional jackhammer to. “Do you want to fuck me?”
What the fuck.
Oh, God, he’s going to have to save Jonathan Byers from his tragically straight crush. From their mutual tragically straight crush? …their mutual tragically straight crush, who admitted to not liking girls?
Something’s not adding up.
“What the fuck, Byers?” Steve sounds angry, and Eddie prepares to jump in. “What, you think just because I’m queer I automatically want to sleep with you?”
What.
“No!” Jonathan yelps. “No, that’s not it, it’s just…we’re both queer, and stuck here for the foreseeable future, and I’ve never been with a guy but I trust you.”
There’s a stunned silence.
“You’re queer.”
Jonathan doesn’t say anything, probably dying of mortification.
“You trust me?”
“Steve,” Jonathan says gently, and Eddie nearly bites through his tongue. “Of course I do.”
“You and Nancy just broke up,” Steve says, wavering. “And I can’t…there’s someone else. I wasn’t lying about that.”
“It doesn’t have to mean anything. You can say no. I just figured I’d ask.”
“Fuck,” Steve mutters. “You realize I’m just as in the dark here as you are, right? I’ve never been with a guy either.”
“We can find out together,” Jonathan says. “Only if you want to, though.”
A heavy silence, where Eddie has to bite his tongue to keep his cool.
“Fuck it. Why the hell not?”
Then Eddie has to leave for the sake of his own sanity. Not before he hears the wet smack of a kiss, though.
Eddie might be going insane.
It’s like everywhere he looks he sees signs of Steve and Jonathan’s… development. Steve leans forward to grab something and his eyes catch on a hickey under his collar. Jonathan sits a little too gingerly one day, and Eddie’s immediately caught up in a fiery inferno of jealousy that he’s not the one sore from whatever Steve did last night. He has to leave the room.
It gets even worse when Steve comes by DND wearing a shirt that is clearly Jonathan’s.
“What are you wearing?” Dustin demands before he can. It’s probably a good thing he did, Eddie might have just started biting him to stake a claim. Which is a useless thought, because Steve isn’t his to claim at all. Steve is Jonathan’s. And stake a claim he did.
He kind of wishes he could hate Jonathan, but he can’t. The guy’s just so sweet with his brother, and it’s obvious in the way he takes care of people that he’s a good guy. The kind of guy who deserves someone like Steve. Someone would have to be a crazy, fucked-up, jealous asshole to hate him.
Eddie is all of those things. He’s also great at lying to himself. If he doesn’t admit he hates Jonathan Byers, fellow freak, for sleeping with the most unfortunately spectacular jock imaginable, he never has to confront his own failure to keep to his code. The doctrine that Steve cheerfully set on fire and then stomped the ashes into dust. All without knowing it, the asshole.
He really can’t blame Jonathan. Eddie’s well aware that he’s made up some weird, one-sided rivalry in his head over Steve’s affections. It’s not his fault that one of them got the guy, and the other got to scream into his pillow at 2am.
Sure, they both said they were hung up on other people, but how long would that really last? He’s fairly sure Steve was lying about having feelings for someone. Eddie can’t help but watch him, and he’s never once seen a sign Steve was interested in any of the other men he hung out with.
Steve colors. “It’s Jonathan’s,” he says, picking at the band tee like he’s self-conscious about it. Which is ridiculous. He obviously knows he looks good in anything. “I…uh…spilled something on mine.”
From the way he talks, Eddie has a pretty good idea what exactly got on his shirt. He takes deep breaths, and tries not to chew through the table. He wishes Steve were in his band shirt instead. He’d look great in Judas Priest merch.
He tries not to picture him in a Corroded Coffin shirt. He fails.

You lost. Eleven hadn't been able to get to Vecna in time and you lost. Max, Lucas, Robin, Dustin, and Steve were all in the hospital because of it. Some in worse condition than others, but it didn't matter, you had all lost. When it had happened you were with Lucas, screaming, crying, and begging as you held little Max in your arms, her ragged breathing crushing your heart into shards. You pleaded with whoever was out there to save her because she wasn't done living yet, none of you were. After rushing her to the hospital, you had fainted in the main lobby scaring Lucas and Erika. The doctors had you admitted for the night to keep an eye on you, but they were sure that it was just a bodily reaction to stress and exhaustion. You were released the next morning without a hitch, but that didn't stop Erika from staying in your room all night.
Due to your inability to leave your hospital bed, you were late to be filled in on what exactly had happened. When you were released the next day, you were immediately swarmed by your friends. Eleven, who you had basically helped Hopper raise, jumped into your arms, clutching onto tightly as she cried. After Mike dragged her from your arms, Jonathan swept you into his arm, sobbing as he held you tight. The two of you had dated for a stint in high school, but when he and Nancy started to get close you let him go on good terms. After breaking it off the two of you stayed really close friends, still loving each other, but in a more platonic than romantic way. Will was next along with Mike and Nancy, their group hug was short but tight and filled with care. Then they got into the nitty gritty, Eleven and Nancy pulled you to sit on your bed and explained the whole thing. Eddie and Dustin had managed to distract the bats, at the cost of Eddie's life and Dustin's leg, but Vecna had known their plan all along and trapped and almost killed Steve, Robin, and Nancy. Eleven was able to fight him off of Max and that's how she barely managed to survive. With him psychically distracted and weak, the group was able to try to full fill the last of the plan and kill the son of a bitch, but he disappeared before they could finish him off and the gates fully opened in Hawkins.
"Holy shit," you gasped, unable to even comprehend what they were telling you.
"I know." Nancy sighed, rubbing your arm warmly.
"Okay, but how was he weak? How were you able to get out of the root shit?" You asked, mind reeling at all the information.
"About that.." Eleven trailed off, nodding at Will who left the room for a second before returning with Joyce and Hopper behind him.
"Oh my god." you froze, unable to move as your eyes brimmed with tears.
"Hey cupcake," Hopper smiled, holding out his arms for you. The tender nickname you had heard him call you your whole life snapped you out of your trance and you set off running into his embrace.
"Pops," you sobbed into his chest, "how?"
"You two kids weren't the only ones who didn't give up on me," he said lovingly as he looked at Joyce. You smiled your heart warming at the sight of your adopted father finally finding someone to share his life with. When looking over at Joyce and wiggled your eyebrows at her knowingly. You had been her favorite of Jonathan's girlfriends and she loved you like a daughter, which meant you had a lot of girl talk. Joyce rolled her eyes at you then winked causing you let out a laugh.
"Where is everyone else?" You wondered aloud, feeling so left in the dark.
"Dustin broke his leg so they have him holed up in the room to the left of you. Robin broke her windpipe and almost died so she is on a respirator in the room next to Dustin. She hasn't woken up yet, they had to put her under and perform emergency surgery so she's high as hell, but they think she is going to be just fine." Nancy informed with a warm but burdened smile. Hopper held you close to his warm chest, keeping you steady while you processed everything.
"Lucas is in the room next to Robin with Max who is in a coma. He has a swollen eye that they are going to drain tomorrow and Max has shattered both arms and legs, they also don't know if her eye sight is going to come back or not. The doctors told us to play it by ear and see if she'd even wake up." Jonathan continued as Nancy started to cry. He pulled her into his arms and you wearily smiled at him, proud but so incredibly hurt.
"Oh! Also.. uhm.." Mike hesitated, unsure whether or not it was his place to say anything.
"Also what?" you asked anxiously, worried someone else might have also died by the grim looks on everyone's faces.
"Steve has been asking for you." Eleven smiled, completely lost on the hesitancy of the other people in the room. She joined your quaint little family after 'the Steve incident' so there is no way she could have known. 'The Steve incident' was a hefty source of deep seeded sadness for you and you had refused to talk about it, ever.
"Why? What does he want?" You asked, slightly irritated that he even has the audacity to ask for you.
"He won't say, kid." Hopper spoke up, his voice low with anger. He remembers 'the Steve incident' like it was yesterday. "But if you want him out of your hair, I'll handle it."
"Wait, hop. She needs to, it's been long enough since-" Joyce tried her intention full of love.
"No." Hopper disagreed, vehemently shaking his head.
"Pops," you smiled, hugging him tightly, "I'm an adult now. I got this." The encouraging smile on your face doesn't match the dread in your heart at having to speak to him.
"Whatever you say, kid, but I don't know if I trust his intentions after the-"
"Please don't finish that sentence." You pleaded, a grimace on your face. Hopper let out a long sigh before placing a fatherly kiss to your forehead and letting you go. You smiled warmly up at him, your eyes reflecting your joy at him being alive and in front of you. "I've got this, pops. I'm your daughter, and if you can come back from the dead, I can take care of a kid I used to be friends with." You tried to reassure him, but it felt, and sounded, more self directed.
After pressing a kiss to your dad's cheek, you followed Joyce out of your room and to the door at the far end of the hall, right next to Max's. "He's in here with a few broken ribs, chunks of skin missing, dehydration, and a concussion. When he came to, he immediately asked how everyone was doing. After we told him you had fainted, he was adamant on leaving to go see you, Jonathan and Hopper had to step in to hold him down." Joyce explained, leaving you completely and utterly lost. You hadn't spoken, or even looked at Steve, since he broke your heart as a kid. He didn't seem adamant on wanting to speak with you either, so why now?
"Thanks," you smiled, letting out a large centering sigh before walking through the door.
"Y/N?" Steve called, coaxing you farther into the room. "Oh thank god." He sighed, relaxing onto the bed with a wince. "Are you alright?"
"Why do you care?" You snapped, crossing your arms across your chest while you scowled at him.
"Listen," he huffed, his face looking a bright shade of white. "I messed up, okay?"
"You messed up?!" you scoffed, you scowl turning murderous. "I don't think you spreading rumors around high school about me being "a whore who puts out for anyone" is a mistake. I think it was intentional." you growled causing Steve's face to curl up in a grimace. "Seriously, how dare you have the audacity to ask for me, to care about me, after the stunt you pulled. You used to be my best friend, the person I trusted most in the world, and you knew damn well I was a virgin!"
"I know! I fucked up and I am so, so sorry Y/N." Steve pleaded and you lost it.
"No! You don't get to apologize. Not anymore. Not after you ripped my heart out. You know what? I can't do this. Hope you have a shit life Steve." You spit before turning on your heel and gunning for the door.
"I was scared!" He called, stopping you in your tracks. "I was scared." he said softly, more vulnerable. You stayed quiet, guarded, but turned back around to see that he had gotten out of bed and was right behind you. Too close. You took a step back and he continued. "I loved you so much that I thought I was going to die. You were gorgeous and everything that I ever dreamed of, but things with my parents were starting to get really bad. It went from casually throwing comments my way to yelling and throwing things and threats of kicking me out and I just," he stopped, taking a deep breath before meeting your gaze. "I couldn't put you through that, not after you had lost your mom and little sister."
"That doesn't excuse the rumor spreading you dick." You spoke, but quieter and with less malice behind your words. Steve reached over and grabbed your arms, you quickly removed them from his grasp.
"Y/N please." Steve pleaded. "I almost died. You almost-" he sighed, running a hand through his perfect hair. "When I was stuck in those things fighting for air, the only thing that came to my mind was you. It was you Y/N. I was about to die and all I could think about was how I lost someone so special, someone I wanted- no want to spend the rest of my life with, and it me being scared is a stupid excuse. I should have never done that to you, but I can't take it back. The only thing I can do is ask for a second chance." Steve explained, baring his heart to you and praying to god that you didn't stomp all over it. "I love you," he whispered, "I love you and I just want to take you out on a date. Just one, and then you can decide for yourself whether or not you ever want to see me again. If you don't, then I'll leave you alone. But.. but if you do, then I think we could really be something special together and I swear to try my best to fight for us." The room went coldly silent for a long while. You were hesitant, scared of letting him back in after what he'd done, but he had a point. It could have been the end for both of you, it still could be at any moment. So why not seize the time you have left? If you got hurt, you got hurt, but at least you could say that you tried. Right?
"Okay," you breathed, waiting with baited breath to see if he was going to laugh in your face and say 'jokes on you I was kidding'. But he didn't. Instead he grabbed your waist and pulled you close, stopping just before kissing you, waiting for your permission. You looked into his deep brown eyes, the ones you had cried over time and time again, but this time you could see the sincerity in the small golden flecks and that was when you knew. He wasn't going down without a fight. So, you closed the distance, sharing a heated kiss that left you both breathless and wanting. "Just don't go and fuck it up this time, okay?"
"Okay." Steve smiled before pulling you back in for another kiss.

----- It all started with a dimebag.
Well, actually, it started long before that, not that Eddie had any clue back then.
For him though, it started with a dimebag.
“You’ve gotta be kidding me,” Eddie said, huffing out an incredulous laugh as he stared down Steve Harrington, waiting for the other shoe to drop.
Despite what his new sheep seemed to think about the former King of Hawkins High, Eddie knew guys like Harrington. They didn’t change, or somehow suddenly evolve into not shitty humans. They were high school has-beens, losers, dicks who never had to grow up because daddy would always be there to protect them.
Steve coming to see him alone after Hellfire? The only way that was going to end was with a plastic baggie and cash exchanging hands, or some kind of fucked up prank that he would laugh about with his other jock douchebags for all of a week.
But King Steve hadn’t done either of those things. In an increasingly confusing turn of events, Harrington had apparently come to him to ask Eddie to sell weed to Jonathan Byers.
Jonathan Byers… the guy who stole his girlfriend right out from under him.
“Look man, he’s too nervous to come to you directly, and I wouldn’t give a fuck about buying for him, but I know you still charge me the asshole tax-” Steve said, running his fingers through his oh-so-perfect hair and sighing as he turned back to Eddie with an even more determined look in his eye.
“You earned the asshole tax, Harrington,” Eddie cut in, a bit harsher than he meant to. Steve almost flinched back and Eddie bit his tongue before he could start ranting. He didn’t really care about Steve’s feelings, but he wasn’t looking to become one of the bullies that he constantly railed against.
Besides, he wanted answers, and he wouldn’t get those from antagonizing Steve past the point of conversation.
“Regardless,” Steve continued on, “I told him that I can’t keep floating the extra cash and he has to start buying from you directly.”
Steve had repeated that same point about five times in this conversation, but Eddie still didn’t get it. No matter how he tried to rearrange it, he just couldn’t make it make sense.
“So you, Steve “The Hair” Harrington, have been buying weed for Jonathan Byers, and you’re just paying the extra money that I charge you for your high school jock tendencies out of the goodness of your ever-so-loving heart?” Eddie asked rhetorically, raising a brow.
Steve nodded anyway and Eddie crossed his arms, his brow furrowing at the completely innocent expression on Steve’s face.
“Why?”
That was the question wasn’t it? What did Steve get out of all of this? Having something to hold over Jonathan couldn’t be worth that much, the asshole tax was a pretty big hike after all. Besides, Will was one of the kids he drove around town all the time.
Were they…friends? Was that even possible?
“Will you do it?” Steve asked, bluntly avoiding the question with a look that told Eddie he wasn’t getting any answers.
“He knows where the picnic table is and what my hours are,” Eddie answered, starting to get bored of the cryptic conversation, “You didn’t have to come here for all this.”
“Look, Jonathan’s been through a lot-”
“You’re telling me that?” Eddie said, a sharp laugh exploding from his chest at the hypocrisy of that statement. Unless he was forgetting, it was Harrington that had beat Jonathan’s face in two years ago, not him.
This time Steve actually did flinch back, his entire body on guard and defensive, coiled like a snake and ready to strike. Eddie was ready for a blow, a punch to the gut or a new black eye to sport for the next few weeks.
But it never came.
Harrington just…stood there, walls high as can be, obviously uneasy but unwilling to leave until he got what he had come here for. The vicious little joy he had gotten at finally landing a hit on the impervious King Steve was quickly waning the longer they just stood there, looking at each other, regret pressing down on the deep buried wounds Eddie hid in his chest.
He knew better than most how much it hurt to constantly have your own failures thrown back in your face.
“Are you done being a douchebag?” Steve asked quietly when the silence had gotten appropriately uncomfortable. Eddie jerked his head upwards in a nod and Steve sighed again, looking away and letting his eyes wander around the drama room rather than look at Eddie.
“All I’m askin’ is that you don’t overcharge him, and don’t do your whole scary demon leader thing. ‘Kay?”
“And I should listen to you, why?” Eddie asked, leaning back and sliding up to sit on the table, faux nonchalance dripping from every pore. He wasn’t looking to be too mean, not anymore, but it was still fun to watch Harrington squirm a little bit.
“Because if you don’t I’ll sic our mutual children on you, and, trust me, you don’t want to be on Will Byers’s shit list.” Steve said with a wry little grin, obviously thinking about all the ways the kids would make Eddie’s life hell if he said no. “By the way, they don’t know Jon smokes, so don’t tell them.”
“All sales are sacrosanct, as you know,” Eddie immediately responded, his personal code jumping out.
Eddie was a lot of things, but he was no snitch. Munsons never turned, never gave up anything that they had been given to hide, not even on the threat of death. His father was shitty for many, many, reasons, but Al had taught him at least one good thing.
“Why does Byers need so much weed anyway?” Eddie asked, trying to turn the conversation casual again, “I thought you were smoking like every night for those migraines the brats are always going on about.”
It was a completely normal thing to say, nothing sharp or biting in the slightest, but the second the words were out of his mouth, all of the blood drained from Steve’s face, and his hand immediately shot up to rub at the side of his neck. He even took a step back, needing extra space between them for some damn reason.
“Nah, I don’t um-” Steve took a deep shaking breath, looking like he had seen a monster. “Drugs aren’t really my thing anymore.”
Drugs weren’t his thing?
Even before the concussions, Harrington was one of Eddie’s top customers. And after getting his head bashed in, Steve was at the picnic table making weekly transactions, always for the same exact amount of product. They almost had it down to a science- 40 bucks, two baggies, have a nice day.
But something about the way Steve was holding himself- the hunched up shoulders and the way his eyes looked about a thousand miles away- it just felt bad.
There was pain there, deep, unnerving pain, and it made Eddie believe every word he was saying.
“After-” Steve cut himself off again, forcing another deep breath in, this one more steady. Eddie could almost physically see Steve put himself back together, the mask of aloof uncaring King Steve coming over his face in a way that was comforting in its familiarity, but disturbing in its motion.
“Drugs aren’t my thing anymore,”  Steve repeated, voice sturdy and walls ten miles high.
“Okay, no worries,” Eddie said, unable to keep all of the gentleness out of his voice. He didn’t exactly want to treat Harrington like one of his lost sheep, but he couldn’t help the urge to protect that came over him any time he saw someone in need. “Uh- tell Byers to meet me on Tuesdays. I’ll- um- charge him the friends and family discount.”
Eddie never had a problem overcharging rich jerks from Loch Nora, but he could swing a bit of an income dip for another kid with one parent and way too many bills on the table.
“Tuesday and Friday,” Steve countered, like they were in a fricken tennis match.
“Tuesday and Friday it is,” Eddie agreed easily, hopping down from his spot and walking towards the door patting Steve twice on the shoulder as he passed him, enjoying the way it made the other boy jump.
Some things would just never change, and freaking out a jock was still one of life’s beautiful little pleasures.
The two of them walked out of the school in an amicable silence. They weren’t friends, Eddie could never imagine thinking of Steve like that, but they weren’t exactly enemies. Steve was no longer who he had been, if the kids were to be believed, but that didn’t matter much to Eddie. He had still been that person, and that was enough reason to dislike him.
Was there a word for that? A word for a person whom you no longer hated, but still didn’t really care to know? There had to be people in the world who had dealt with this particular issue.
Eddie was so deep in his thoughts that he barely noticed walking out the door and down the steps. He only realized they were at their destination when Steve broke away, turning and going in the opposite direction.
“Thanks,” Harrington called out with a toss of his hand over his shoulder, walking towards his lonely Beemer in the other corner of the parking lot.
“Oh yeah, sure,” Eddie muttered, still distracted by the question.
Eddie cared about the brats, he knew that. He was handing down the legacy of Hellfire to those hellions, and he knew they would do well. And the kids cared about Steve, for some inexplicable reason. Henderson was desperate to make them best friends for god's sake.
Well, best friends they would never be, but maybe an olive branch would push them towards something better. If Harrington was going to be in his life more, Eddie at least wanted it to be bearable.
“Hey Steve?” Eddie shouted from across the parking lot, catching Steve’s attention and making him turn around.
“If you- um- ever decide drugs are ‘your thing’ again, I’ll cut your asshole tax in half,” Eddie offered, feeling inexplicably embarrassed and trying to hide his blush behind his hair, “For Henderson, you know?”
“Just be nice to Jonathan, that’s all I’m askin’ for!” Steve shouted back.
Jonathan.
Eddie shook his head, jogging over to his van and fumbling for the keys, nearly dropping them as he went to unlock the door.
“Jonathan fucking Byers what are you bringing into my life?” Eddie mumbled to himself, already sure that this was going to lead to absolutely nothing good.

Prologue? Pilot? IDK Man I Just Work Here
(part 1.2)
{hey so uhhhh
i have finals coming up and its the last week of classes and im lowkey failing two of mine right now, so unfortunately im going to have to go on hiatus for a bit- even though i literally just started, ugh- while i try to catch up and deal with... all that
that said, ive decided to split the prologue up into three parts instead of two and just go ahead and give you what ive got so far of the rest of it
this and the third (and hopefully final) segment is where we really start setting up/contextualizing the "full house" premise of the fic
link to part 1.1 here}
~~~
So, over the next several weeks, they come up with a plan.
Most of them aren’t exactly happy about the plan, but… oh well.
The parents are determined to move their children- who have proven themselves to be prime targets for the supernatural- out of town, to relocate them somewhere they’ll be well-removed from the apocalypse unfolding in Hawkins. Caught up to speed about the history of Hawkins Lab and Owens’s involvement in everything, they all but order him to help with the arrangements.
And he delivers. Calls are made, blueprints are drawn, and before they know it, a plot of land has been secured two thousand miles away in California for a house to be built on. And it’s going to have to be a pretty big house, considering it’ll be home to six teenagers and a pre-teen.
The kids are dead set on not being separated again; it’s one of their conditions for agreeing to leave. Steve can’t blame them, honestly. After everything they’ve been through together, he doesn’t want to be apart from them either. In fact, he’s been feeling a bit paralyzed by the thought, has had a little trouble breathing since the move was decided.
He’s sort of out of it the next time everyone gathers at the hospital to hash out the details, to be honest, but in his defense, his head isn’t quite what it used to be before all the hits he’s taken in recent years.
But then the ongoing discussion turns to who will look after the kids, and well, that certainly gets his attention.
There’s a military blockade taking shape around the area, keeping the threat contained- but also the citizens. It’s only through Owens’s connections and influence that they’ll be able to sneak the kids out, and just that in itself is going to be risky. As much as they’d like to, they can’t take everyone.
The parents have agreed to join the resistance that’s starting to form, a force of townsfolk who have finally realized what’s really happening and are banding together to find a solution, or at least hold off the Upside Down from taking over for as long as they can. Hopper and Joyce have taken it upon themselves to teach everyone as much as they can about what they’re up against, and a few of the others are helping out with pooling resources and organizing community childcare.
For various reasons, their families won’t be coming along.
“Who’s going to take care of you all?” Sue asks, her question directed more towards the room at large than the kids themselves. “None of you are older than fifteen; I don’t want you out there on your own with no adult supervision.”
Karen starts to say something, probably about how she doesn’t intend to let Nancy stay behind either, that there will definitely be at least one person over fifteen present, but Steve cuts her off in his eagerness. He practically jumps out of his seat, actually, but he’s held in place by his desperate grip on the sheets of the hospital bed he’s still stuck in until he’s done recovering from the demobat bites.
“I’ll do it!”
Once again, all eyes are on him, and they’re broadcasting confusion, surprise- in the case of the parents, that is. The kids mostly look relieved. None of them will say it- the little shits- but he’s pretty sure they were just as worried about leaving him behind as he was about sending them away.
Claudia tilts her head at him in question. “You? What, by yourself?”
Steve figures the faintly bitter disbelief in her voice has less to do with him and more to do with Dustin’s deadbeat dad, so he chooses not to take it to heart. But before he can make a remark about how some men are actually interested in fatherhood- although he’s not entirely sure what his brain even means by that- Karen Wheeler speaks up.
“Not by himself, no. What I was about to say a moment ago was that Nancy is going too. I don’t want my daughter staying here after being involved with all this pretty much since the beginning. But, Steve, even then, you’re hardly adults yourselves- Nancy only just graduated high school last week. I don’t think you two should be left to basically parent seven kids all alone; it’s too much responsibility.”
(While she does have a point, and he’s certainly not opposed to having Nancy out of harm’s way, it’s also important to note that the daughter in question is currently busy giving shooting lessons to a sizable portion of the resistance. Nancy is no stranger to responsibility, but she isn’t exactly the motherly type, either. Regardless, Steve wants both roles for himself- at least on a subconscious level. He’s not quite aware of it yet, his rightful place as both mom and dad to the party, but… he’ll get there. He thinks of himself more as a glorified babysitter, really, but it is a position he takes very seriously nowadays.)
Mistaking Steve's spacey expression for something else, Dustin mutters smugly beside him, “I bet you would looove that.”
Steve rolls his eyes and shoots back, “Can it, kid. We’ve been over this. Nance and I are not getting back together.”
Nancy and Jonathan broke up after her graduation, for reasons which Steve has decided are none of his business. In some ways, this made the idea of rekindling their relationship- something his friends insisted he should try to do- more of an actual possibility. And yet, somehow, that in itself helped him realize that he doesn’t really want to get back together. And he knows she feels the same, even if there are some weird lingering feelings on both sides of the issue. They simply aren’t compatible, and that’s okay. It took him a while to get here, but now he’s happy just being her friend.
Thankfully, Robin joins in, interrupting that awkward train of thought and providing the solution to a problem Steve hasn't even considered yet.
“They wouldn’t be alone, Mrs. Wheeler. I can help out, too.”
“You would do that? Move across the country and play house with me and these brats?”
“Of course I would, dingus. Where you go, I go.”
The fondness in their exchange prompts some raised eyebrows from the others, but that’s irrelevant. Steve is just massively thankful that Robin is offering to come along. Having to choose between the kids and his platonic soulmate would have torn him apart just as badly as the bats did.
“And I’d say the same about Will and El,” Jonathan says as he joins the group. “So I hope there’s room for a couple more.” He glances questioningly at Argyle, who came in with him.
Argyle just shrugs. “I’m sticking with you, man.” Apparently, his parents turned him out to fend for himself when he hit eighteen, so he doesn’t have much to go back to, and he’s been content staying with the Byers until the blockade is lifted- or for the long haul, it seems.
Karen nods in Jonathan’s direction. “Good, I’m sure Joyce will feel better knowing you’ll be there.”
So that makes five of us. Considering I’ve wrangled most of these guys on my own plenty of times by now, that should be totally manageable. I guess it will be nice to have some guaranteed backup for once.
It looks like the gang is staying together after all, plus at least one new-ish addition.
But, speaking of "new-ish additions" to the group, there is still a six-foot deep hole in the entire plan, which is the question of what to do with a dead man when all his remaining friends are ditching town.
“What about... Eddie?”
{well folks theres the second installment of the prologue. as for the rest of it... youll get it when you get it. hopefully ill be able to start updating more regularly once i go back home for the summer. things are just kinda crazy right now hahahahaha <-(the deranged laughter of a person whose ass is not passing all their courses this time and is very seriously considering becoming a college dropout)
oh and yeah so eddies dead i guess. not what i had planned but sometimes the plot just does what it wants. you know how full house basically starts off with dannys wife dying in a car accident (offscreen and prior to the events of the actual show anyway)? and steve is like, very loosely the au's parallel of danny? well you might not have known that actually but i just told you. so. yeah. you get where this is going
also, to my unofficial beta readers and lovely mutuals @moreover-clover and @redley-of-many-noodles: i have seen your comments/messages and i appreciate your input, but ive decided im going to try not to take this project too seriously and just have fun with it rather than worry about how polished it is, so i think this is going to be a no beta project from here on out. thank you for the thoughtful commentary/critiques on part 1.1, and i do hope you continue to enjoy it <3
having said that, if anyone happens to notice glaringly obvious/simple typos that i could easily fix, or if any parts are just genuinely incomprehensible, feel free to point it out/ask for clarification if you want to}
Steve begging Nancy not to tell Jonathan about the six kids and Winnebago thing, not because he's worried about getting his ass kicked but because he needs Jonathan to think he's cool
