Working on a Shantae AU concept: the short hair AU!

What if Shantae DID get her hair cut in Pirate’s Curse?

One of the things I like most about that game is the amount of character development. But what if some of it was taken further? Putting the hero at their lowest point to really embody the themes of the story?

I’m thinking there’s a bit more emphasis in the story on Shantae’s struggles with losing her magic (and connection to her mother) and working through them, and also some more emphasis on Shantae and Risky’s forming bond. I’ll have to watch all the cutscenes again just to make sure I’m not totally screwing up the story though lol.

The main thing about this AU is that Shantae is without her main weapon. So she has to use other ways to get around, mainly stealth and the pirate weapons. Fighting is a bit more awkward at first, but the pirate weapons have more of a use in combat. And maybe Risky plays a part in helping Shantae with the adjustment and learning how to fight with the weapons (maybe she’d give the weapon upgrades instead of the dude at the shop)

Shantae and the Pirates Curse - Blast Review

Developer: Wayforward Rrp: £14.99 (Gog.com, Humblebundle and Steam) I know I said this in the last review of a Shantae game that I did, but I still find it facinating that a long running platformer series exists outside of the larger publishers. It's just such an anomaly. As I just mentioned I have previously reviewed a title in the series (in fact it was this sequel to this game: Shantae Half-Genie Hero) and most of what I said in that review still applies to this one. However, in this game you don't turn into various animals, no this time you collect pirate gear which gives you new abilities.

This game has been a blast from beginning to end, it didn't outstay its welcome and kept me entertained throughout. That isn't to say its perfect, the game definitely performs some very cheap tricks in order to make the game seem harder than it is. I'd love to give an example but the best one sadly is very close to the end of the game. All I will say is that at no point in the entire game have you been shown you could do the what needs to be done to get through a specific part and it never happens again.

If you're in the mood for a platformer you really could do much worse than this game, I fully intend to get the rest of the games in this series as I've so far enjoyed this one even though its a port from the 3DS.

Pirates Curse Styled Michael

In 2024, Shantae and the Pirates Curse will be 10 years old. Specifically on October 23. My absolute favourite game in one of my favourite franchises and probably my second favourite game of all time, turning 10 years old in 2024. Honestly, with that along with the cancelled GBA sequel Risky’s Revolution being revived and released I’d say 2024 is a good year to proclaim “Yeah, I love this franchise and I’m proud to admit it!” I could go on about why I love this particular Shantae game and why it holds such a special place in my heart but I don’t wanna drag this description out for longer that I probably should although me adding that that cancelled prototype of the first Shantae game back when it was originally intended for the Playstation 1 being released would also be a nice thing two.

So, what better way to celebrate this occasion than with a commission from hachimitsu-ink in the games art style. Of my own self insert! Because vanity lol. Considering I’ve made it pretty clear that I do shamelessly ship my own self insert with Shantae and I have no regrets doing so me getting a pic of my sona in a similar art style of one of the games is actually pretty fitting I’d say.

Plus, I kinda needed a new “normal” pic of my sona anyway to give artists who I commission and don’t enjoy drawing some of the stuff I usually do get with them. But anyway, happy soon to be 10 years to my favourite Shantae game!

Here is a collection of all the Shantops artwork I've made. Most of it is sketches. I genuinely want to draw them more but my lack of confidence in my ability to draw them is what keeps me from doing it more. But with this blog being a thing, I feel more invigorated to draw them even if I'm gonna have difficulty. I'll only get better with each try so, yeah. :] Anyways hereth y'all go! I also have a whole unfinished comic of them I made, but I'll post that seperately since it's a lot of sketched out pages.
