I saw a video on tiktok about a woman telling how she met and started a committed relationship with another woman while the were in prison, calling eachother wife and then got married once they were out, and I can only think about lesbingqiu in that scenario.

Binghe would totally thrive calling Shen Yuan her wife, wifey, and live in a weird marital bliss with her cell partner. Then make sure to have that marriage written down on paper once they are out.

Shen Yuan probably finds a way to do mental gymnastics about letting Binghe call her wife. Prison codes? Protecting eachother? of course i do. someone else may have already made this post but if not, it needed to be made.

in the span of the series, glimmer made two major mistakes that catra also did. let's start with the worst one:

1. jeopardizing the safety of etheria:

glimmer used the black garnet to enhance the princesses' powers to save etheria. was she still at fault for being stubborn and reckless? absolutely. but her intentions were pure and she was really in a tight spot.

“I'm the queen who's going to save Etheria.”

i think we've all been in a situation where we were backed into a corner and had to resort to a bad decision. glimmer was misguided but she was trying to do the right thing.

“We both want to save the people we love.”

she still loved her friends and she cared about her people. of course, it's not an excuse for what she did. but you really can't blame her when she was forced into being a queen at such a young age, because of catra. i swear, people completely forget the fact that none of this would have happened if catra didn't open the portal.

not to mention, glimmer's reaction when she realizes that she was wrong:

she immediately admits it. she doesn't try to justify herself, she doesn't shift the blame onto anyone else. glimmer may be stubborn, but she's humble enough to acknowledge her own mistakes. contrast that to catra's reaction to realizing that the portal was about to kill everyone:

that's right. she doesn't care. first off, she was not forced into opening the portal. she wanted to do it to spite adora. sure, she was in a very emotional low at the time, because of the whole "shadow weaver choosing adora" thing. i get it. but her intentions weren't good, they weren't even neutral. she actively wanted to end the world, as long as adora died with it. her reaction to being told that adora was right was this:

“Adora is right. (laughs) Adora gets everything she wants. But not this time. This time, I am going to win. I don't care what it takes. We are opening that portal now.”

also, of course she shifts the blame to adora.

instead of at least acknowledging that this was her choice, she refuses to take responsibility for it and instead guilt trips adora.

2. hurting adora

this is probably the reason why glimmer gets the most hate from the fandom. because, in a moment of grief and frustration, she says something hurtful:

of course, it was wrong. it wasn't adora's fault that angella died. but glimmer's anger was understandable, it was just misdirected. she was going through a lot (reminder: because of catra) and she wasn't even given enough time to grieve. she had to put that aside to focus on being a queen. also, unlike catra, glimmer shows immediate guilt and regret after saying that.

she immediately tries to apologize. no one needed to tell her that what she did was wrong, she realized it instantly. and again, i think this is something we all do. frustration and stress gets the best of us sometimes and causes us to say or do something we can't take back. what matters is if we acknowledge it immediately and try not to do it again.

which glimmer does. she tries to apologize to adora again, but adora is (reasonably) upset and hurt. glimmer is shown to be guilty throughout, and apologizes properly as soon as she is rescued from horde prime.

again, compare that with catra constantly mocking, belittling, insulting and guilt tripping adora.

she's doing this on purpose. some of it can be chalked down to her being upset in a moment of distress, but most of it is catra deliberately saying anything that could and would break adora's self-esteem. she even prides herself in knowing adora well enough to know what to say in order to really get to her. if you want instances of catra hurting adora, there are going to be thousands across the series, and that's not counting all the physical abuse and attempted murder.

meanwhile, people still hate glimmer for one (1) thing she said out of frustration, and holds her accountable even after she apologized and never repeated it. the double standards are really double standarding.

not to mention, glimmer has to face the consequences of her actions. bow is allowed to stay mad at her and only forgives her after she starts crying, admits her mistake and says that she doesn't expect his forgiveness.

but catra? little catgirl got rescued and lashed out at adora immediately after. the bfs risked their lives to save her, but she never even thanks them. instead she crawls into the room afterwards acting all cute and sad, so all is forgiven. glimmer, who blamed adora for the death of her mom, is suddenly besties with the very person who killed said mom. bow gushes over how cute catra is, completely forgetting everything she did in the previous seasons.

it's so clear that not only do the fans hate glimmer, but even the show seems to. the writers seem to hate every character except catra. and honestly? their favoritism towards catra only ruined her character. she could have been a great villain or heck, she could have even gotten a good redemption arc. flawed characters don't mean shit if they are treated like victims instead of having actual character development.

i considered drawing something out to this, and making it a happy ending sort of thing, because i think this is extremely sweet as a concept and i understand the desire for it!

that said, i decided that it would be a disservice to the lore i'm building for her, my biology/magic headcanons, and also the waddle dees as a whole. i might still draw it some day, because i could absolutely perceive a way it would work (ie: all waddle dee signatures messed up by Elfilis's portals, or their magic sensitivity nuked by it.) and i think it would be lovely

but for now, i have too many other things on the backburner to get to this promptly, and i wanted to answer this one sooner rather than leaving it for months

i will say, they're not being rude to her! there might be the odd one or two who is a bit snide, but there are some of those in every society. as a general rule the waddle dees not only understand that she is struggling, they want to accept and help her. many of them even know she's lonely, and feel pretty bad about it. but it's hard, and not just because she makes people uneasy!

i draw parallels with starstruck's gummed up magical signature to autism, as i'm autistic and so by merit (as a sona), so is she. but there are some parts that do not line up with the way autism functions in our world, and one of them is that touching or being around her can be genuinely, literally painful for some of the very sensitive waddle dees.

despite that, her waddle dee doctors actually pushed through it while she was in the castle dedede infirmary. because they were determined to treat her (mostly-surface-seeming) injuries and help her feel better. and they apologised for the reactions that they couldn't control anymore than she could control her signature; the various "sorry"s she parrots in this comic are implied to be from waddle dee doctors.

it's a fine line in alien-storytelling, especially with a real world disability parallel, and i'm trying to tread it as carefully as i can. but i don't intend to villainise the waddle dees at all for their reaction to her; they truly can't help it. many of them even do their best to push through it if she comes into their vicinity, especially because she often arrives with Beloved Celebrity, Captain Bandana Waddle Dee. but like a lot of us, she can tell when she's being tolerated, and so as a rule she just sort of tries to avoid it, one way or another

Most of us in Tolkien fandom (at least in these parts) have a profound affection for some passingly mentioned female character we know almost nothing about.

Today's for me: Rían of Gondor, daughter of the Steward Barahir, sister of the Steward Dior, and mother of the Steward Denethor I (not to be confused with Boromir and Faramir's father, Denethor II).

She's one of the few named Gondorian women, but we know even less about her than most. We don't know who her husband was. We don't know what she thought or felt or did with regard to anything. All we know is that, while not the Steward herself, she was the first woman the rule of Gondor had ever passed through.

The Stewards committed their rule like a kingship, father to eldest son, and it was the established position of Gondor that its rule couldn't pass through women (see Princess Fíriel!). Perhaps the Stewards or the Council of the time justified changing their policy through the absence of a technical king, but the Stewards received the powers of absent kings from day 1 and were described by Gandalf as more powerful than actual kings like Théoden. The Ruling Stewards passed the Stewardship in exactly the same way as the kings had passed the crown—until Rían and Denethor.

If their excuse was that they weren't really kings, it would be pretty transparently an excuse to let the rule of Gondor pass through a woman's lineage for the first time.

What part did Rían play in this? Did she have to fight to get the White Rod in Denethor's hands? Was she a voluntary participant in the whole thing at all? What was her relationship like with her brother Dior, who passed the Stewardship to her son? Her relationship with Denethor himself? What about the unnamed but presumably existent husband (a kind of fun reversal of the usual "implied but unnamed women," lol)?
