and i LOVE that the ‘ice princess’ who is cold and demanding is the one who is the more publicly affectionate one, even if some characters cannot seem to understand that that’s what miorine’s doing. girl doesn’t know how to be soft n warm but she loves so hard and tight.

Notes on Roman Homosexuality by Craig Williams, chapter 4! In today's installment, what is "manliness"? What did it mean for a man to be "effeminate"? Plus: not only are gender roles bullshit, but they're also connected to classism, imperialism and xenophobia!

Masculinity and femininity are social constructs. That means they are not inherent properties of our bodies, but judgments and categories people put on us. These social constructs aren't limited to physical sex, either - they tend to expand into elaborate, restrictive codes of dress, career, hobbies, speaking style, and every other aspect of daily life.

These social constructs are fragile and ever-changing. A Roman man wasn't a man solely because he had a dick. He had to reinforce his masculine persona by behaving in masculine ways, lest he be attacked as "effeminate" and lose other people's respect and trust.

Roman masculinity centered around dominance and control. Masculinity was realized by exerting power over your wife and children, by aggression in battle and the courtroom, and by the subjugation of slaves and non-Romans.

However, a Roman man was also supposed to be the master of his own desires, and a man who was too self-indulgent with food, sex, nice clothes, or other pleasures could get called effeminate. In fact, effeminate men were often stereotyped as womanizers. Other times they were accused of sleeping with men and women alike, or of being both penetrator and penetrated. The emasculation came not from sleeping with men per se, but from being a "slave to one's desires," and losing one's inhibitions.

(Aside #1 - I wonder if this partly accounts for why Stoicism became more popular among Roman men than Epicureanism?)

In fact, the masculine rejection of being "too emotional" was so intense that a Roman man could get called effeminate for falling in love with a woman. This inspired much of Octavian's propaganda against Mark Antony: that she "enslaved" him with her feminine wiles, and he in turn gave up his masculine virtue and his Romanness. Similarly, Pompey's contemporaries made fun of him for being excessively affectionate to his wife Julia (Caesar's daughter).

And oh yes, Romanness was equated to masculinity, and masculinity with virtue. The Latin word for virtue literally means "manliness," and the Romans saw themselves as being uniquely manly compared to the "soft, self-indulgent" men of other cultures. This later became a justification for subjugating those cultures: it was only natural that the "manly" nation ruled the "womanly" ones, right?

(Aside #2 - Reminds me a bit of how racial stereotypes today may emasculate marginalized men, or conversely, portray them as brutish/violent/hypersexual. I wonder if some of this may be a legacy from Roman ethnocentrism? Then again, it may not be a Roman-specific thing. This might just be something that imperialist/colonialist powers in general do to justify themselves.)

(Aside #3 - This must have interacted in interesting ways with the heavy immigration and multiculturalism in Rome! How do you prop up masculinity as a "Roman" virtue when every neighborhood speaks a different language? How much would the masculine ideal shift in response to new cultures coming in? And how much of our picture of "Roman gender roles" only reflects the upper-class Latin writers, leaving out other Roman narratives?)

Although willingly being penetrated could make a man effeminate in Roman eyes, the stereotype of the "effeminate" was much broader, and not all effeminate men were assumed to sleep with other men. Excessive attention to grooming, enjoying women's company (romantically or platonically), showing fear of death, even crying for a lost wife could all be seen as effeminate. The "problem" of effeminacy was not fundamentally a stigma toward gay men, but toward any man who was not seen as performing masculinity correctly.

In practice, any man could get accused of effeminacy, and Roman politicians would happily make up stories about their rivals if no evidence existed. If you weren't aggressive or dominant enough, you were accused of being too soft; if you were aggressive and dominant, you'd be accused of having no manly self-control.

Honestly, this chapter made me feel sorry for Roman men. It sounds like such a dreadfully unhealthy environment, not even being allowed to love your spouse too openly or grieve for your child without being seen as weak. I have to wonder if such rigid gender norms could themselves be traumatic - they certainly can be for trans people, and for women today.

Sometimes I'm amazed the Roman republic survived as long as it did. In between the slavery, the corruption, the generational trauma, and all the garbage gender roles, it feels like a culture that would bring out the worst in people. And yet, on the eve of Caesar and Pompey's civil war, 94% of the Senate voted for disarmament and peace.

Maybe I shouldn't be so surprised. Many of the sexist prejudices Williams outlined have parallels even in my own culture. And yet I've also known men who rose above that. Who understood that kindness isn't a weakness, and aggression isn't strength. It's hard to scrub all the sexist nonsense out of our brains, but gods, it's such a relief. Life is so much richer when you can just be yourself, and let other people be themselves.

I'm sure there were Romans who tried very hard to be themselves, too. And others who, even if their view was colored by the prejudices of their time, they at least tried to be kind and do right by others. That's all any of us can do, really.

Fly Me to the Moon - by Mcat (8/10)

Everybody loves a love triangle, but I personally think love lines are more dramatic. It's gross when someone you don't like is following you. Especially when you're busy trying to woo the lover you deserve. The tension is nice, and of course this love line turns into stalking. Also, everybody present is a monster. As a bonus.

She's depressed.

She's ugly.

She's poor.

She's lonely enough to accept any kind of attention.

Our protagonist looks boring as heck at first.

Jeongyeon has been stuck in the role of caregiver for too long. Her mother had cancer, and some people just can't handle that. She became feeble, angry, and spoiled. Jeongyeon had no life when her mother was alive, and now that she's dead there's nothing to...do? She just has an old house, booze, and cigarettes. Taeho is a monster. He's a demon(?) called a Clansmen. Being one is super convenient. You are born super smart. You get to live longer. You get to be pretty, but life gets complicated. The Clan is a secret. It runs like a professional sort of cult. Clan cops and doctors keep everything hushed up, and Clan politicians handle the bribes. Taeho is a piece of shit. His father was also a piece of crap, but Taeho's big brother is Leader. The leader of a huge Clansmen branch. Taegyung is a responsible and good monster guy. He's also kinda Taeho's father AND brother. The slow aging process creates alot of complex relationships. Taeho is spoiled. Everybody lets him do crime and shit because of Taegyung.

Taeho might be spoiled, but life with a brother for a dad kinda stinks. Taeho got married to please everybody. He married a perfect Clan princess, but then he killed her. Taeho is a member of the Seo branch. That means he's really powerful. So powerful that...um...when he takes a wife and has a baby said wife can go insane. His wife ATE his first child. He got angry and he ripped apart the princess. Everybody is blaming him, because he executed her without thinking about what her powerful family would do. He was a terrible husband. Her family wants his head on a plate in exchange for her death...which kinda is unfair. Her insanity wasn't really his fault...and she literally ate a baby, but he should have just captured her. Taeho was almost eaten by his mom as well...so um...yeah he was never going to be normal. Taeho and Taegyung get pressured to marry and have heirs near constantly, because they're so strong, despite the huge insanity risk.

I completely understand why this guy grew up into a bad guy, but he sucks.

He gaslights Jeongyeon. He hangs out at her place while he hides from the Clan that wants him dead. He has no idea how to be affectionate, and he treats Jeongyeon like garbage, even after he develops a crush on her.

Taegyung has to clean up Taeho's mess. Jeongyeon gets bitten. Taeho does it to punish her. To bind her to him and make her more submissive. Taegyung takes over and he does the Clan bond the proper way. Jeongyeon doesn't trust him at first, but they get along well. Taegyung doesn't want an heir because of the whole cannibal wife thing. He can't fully hate Taeho, because he should have never felt pressured to marry in the first place. He starts to realize his brother can't be saved when he gets to know Jeongyeon.

They share cigarettes. They're bonded so they feel some attraction...but nothing happens. Taegyung must marry a princess. He gets pestered about it daily. The bond doesn't mean they're married or anything. It just means Taegyung was the one who helped her body transform. Jeongyeon is prettier now and she's also rich. She gets an expense card, and Taegyung lets her leave.

The leader of the Yu Clan is still very angry. Jeongyeon suffers because she knows Taeho. Everybody assumes she's his mistress, just because Taeho didn't kill or eat her. Jeongyeon gets stalked by demons who want revenge. Taegyung doesn't hover too much, because he's worried. Being a Seo sucks. He feels immensely possessive of Jeongyeon. He tries to put duty first, and he doesn't actually want to lock her up in his mansion. He just gets the urge. It makes him feel like he's not himself.

This guy tries to kill Jeongyeon...but he's really nice. The dead princess was like a sister to him. He hates Taeho because he's a bastard that never gets punished for his crimes. In the end he protects Jeongyeon from Taeho. Taeho comes back acting like a brat right away. He demands to know why Jeongyeon bonded with his brother, which is a joke. He left her bleeding on the floor. The change would have killed her. Taegyung saved her life. Taeho made her a monster without permission, just to scare her into obeying him.

He's the most unattractive kind of yandere.

Jeongyeon eventually becomes strong enough to stand up to him on her own. She didn’t want this life. She didn’t want the money. She was just trying to rebuild after the long and painful death of her mother. Taeho made her life worse. Taegyung makes it better. The choice is obvious. Jeongyeon never wavers. She let Taeho crash on her couch because she was lonely, but no more. No more pity. She slaps him every time she meets him. She rejects the idea that abuse is love.

Chengcheng is the perfect Clan princess. She wants to marry Taegyung. She's been waiting since she turned twelve years old. She thinks she is entitled to him. She thinks Jeongyeon is just another pitiful pet project to Taegyung, just like his loser brother Taeho. She's wrong. Taegyung is getting worse by the day. He keeps fantasizing about hunting down Jeongyeon. That's just the way his bloodline is.

Taegyung starts to interfere more. He shows up whenever Jeongyeon is in trouble. He's clearly not willing to let Taeho drag her off and treat her like a pet. He wants to treat her like a princess. Everybody is shocked by how naive Jeongyeon is. She thinks Taegyung is a total gentleman, but his Clan knows he has spilled more blood than anyone else. I'm not saying he's not a nice guy. He's fair to humans and he tried his best to be a parent for Taeho, but now I think he's going to rip Taeho's face off.

What ROs would Morgana most approve of?

Mostly approves of the others. Let's see:

Agravain - Morgana ends up taking them under her wing so she's happy to see Agravain and Mordred together; they've both been treated poorly and it's nice to see them find love together.

Gawain and Elaine are both very sweet and affectionate with Mordred, and always speaking well of them, trying to convince people to give them a chance. She likes how unabashedly they love Mordred.

Morgana respects Sophie as a person and politician; Sophie has Mordred's back, which she appreciates, but she's also concerned about the enemies the Princess has been making back home.

Morgana likes Isac, but she's a bit wary when she learns he's a shameless flirt, cause she doesn't want Mordred to end up with a broken heart. Otherwise she's very happy for them - she's always respected his family and the way they always stood up against Uther and Merlin.

Extended Legacy Disney Princess Challenge

Sul sul!

The original Disney Princess challenge is all fine and dandy, but I found it lacking when compared to challenges such as the Not So Berry Challenge. I did some research to see if I could figure out why, watched a ton of simmers play the challenge, and I came to the conclusion that it's just a little too open-ended. Not So Berry is beautifully structured without railroading simmers which keeps it entertaining and fun throughout all 10 generations. So, I decided to take matters into my own hands and now I present to you my version of the Disney Princess challenge... which I am affectionately calling the Extended Legacy Revised Disney Princess Challenge.

Please do NOT claim this revision as your own. I worked really hard on this and would like to be credited appropriately for it. Also, linking to the original creator of the challenge if you DO share this would be the right thing to do.

NOTE: This challenge has not been playtested as of the time of this posting. I'm hoping to begin a new series on my Youtube channel starting in early-to-mid April that will go over the challenge and will allow me to make tweaks as needed since I think I might have gone a little bit overboard! Also, if you don't have certain packs, feel free to fudge it a little.

Generation 1: Raya

You grew up in a divided world, with conflict all around you. You have always believed in the magic of the world and in others until your trust was broken as a child. You must begin this challenge as a child (create both parents).

- Must live in only one location your entire life (wherever you choose to live after becoming a young adult and moving out).

- Must have both parents die early.

- Must be best friends with your sister as a toddler and child, but lose that friendship with her just before you become a teen until you become an adult.

- Must have no friends except for your lovers and your sister until after you reunite with her as an adult.

- Complete the Soulmate aspiration.

- Reach level 10 in the Charisma skill and level 5 in the Rock Climbing skill.

Your mom sure had her hands full with the four of you. She expected you to be the leader of the pack, but all you wanted to do was find your own way. You never seem to be able to do anything right in her eyes. Because of this you rebel as a teen and run away from home to seek a better life.

Career: Athlete

- Must run away as a teen and live with an elderly lady who takes you in.

- Must have a good relationship with your siblings but a bad relationship with your mother.

- Must make 5 enemies and have no friends (except for the elderly lady) until you become an adult.

- Never have any romance with anyone. If you do gain romance with someone, you must make them dislike you.

- Reach level 10 in the Fitness and Handiness skills.

- After the elderly lady, your only friend in the whole world, dies and you become an adult, attempt to reach level 10 in the Wellness skill to try to learn to control your emotions and become a better person.

- Once you have achieved at least level 8 in the Wellness skill and become an elder, reunite with your family and fix your relationship with your mother.

- Complete the Athletic aspiration.

- Master the Athlete career and choose the Professional Athlete branch.

- Never have any children of your own. Adopt a child as a young adult and never have a good relationship with them until you become an elder.

Generation 5: Rapunzel

"You were wrong about the world, and you were wrong about me."

You don’t remember your real mother. Your adopted mother never understood you and didn’t like or trust the outside world, so you grew up in solitude. You love art and want to share your love with the outside world.

Traits: Creative, Art Lover, Cheerful.

Aspiration: Painter Extraordinaire

Career: Painter

- Must never leave the house and must be homeschooled.

- Must never have any friends or romantic relationships until you meet your one true love.

- Must reach at least level 8 in the Painting skill before you become a young adult.

- As a teen, sneak out past curfew when the “Humor and Hijinks” festival is happening and participate in all events. Talk to sims and try to find one with either the Kleptomaniac trait or one who is on the criminal career path.

- When you return home, get in a fight with your adopted mother until you become enemies. Walk out and never speak to her again until she’s an elderly woman.

- Marry the sim you met during the “Humor and Hijinks” festival during the “Romance” festival.

- Reach level 10 in the Painting and Baking skills. Reach at least level 3 in the Knitting, Cross-Stitch, Guitar, and Cooking skills. 

- Complete the Painter Extraordinaire aspiration.

- Master the Painter career and choose the “Master of the Real Branch” career path.

- Have at least one child.

Generation 6: Tiana

"The only way to get what you want in this world is through hard work."

Your mother was a painter and your father was a criminal. You didn’t grow up with a lot of money and you dream of having more. You start working early in your life and hope to one day become your own boss.

Traits: Foodie, Ambitious, Outgoing

Aspiration: Master Chef

Career: Culinary, Restaurant Owner

- Must start working in fast food as a teen.

- Must get straight A’s in school.

- Must have one close friend who is rich or is a celebrity.

- Work odd jobs on top of your hourly job. Pinch and save every penny you earn.

- Buy a restaurant that is torn down and very small. Use all of your savings to turn it into the fanciest place in town!

- Must have at least three waiters, two chefs, and five stars.

- Reach level 10 in the Cooking and Gourmet Cooking skills.

- Master the Culinary career and enter the “Chef” branch.

- Marry a sim with green (this can be hair, eyes, skin, etc). 

- Complete the Master Chef aspiration.

- Adopt or have a child once you have at least a three star restaurant.

Generation 7: Mulan

"The flower that blooms in adversity is the most beautiful of them all."

Your mother worked hard so you could have a better life. She worked herself half to death ever since she was a teenager and all you want to do is provide her with a life of ease. You’re not very close to her because she worked so much, but when the restaurant starts going under due to fake bad reviews and things beyond your family’s control, you decide to take matters into your own hands and catch the people responsible for destroying your mother’s dream.

- Must be good friends with at least three different animals.

- Must have at least two pets.

- Must build a rocket and travel to Sixam.

- Must be friends with at least 3 aliens.

- Must have a romantic relationship with an alien on your first visit to Sixam, but marry the next alien you have a romantic relationship with the next time you visit Sixam. They cannot be the same alien.

- Avoid contact with the outside world after marrying the alien and move into your parent’s home to care for them during their final years.

- Complete the Friend of the Animals aspiration.

- Reach level 10 in Rocket Science, Logic, and Fitness and level 5 in Pet Training.

Generation 9: Jasmine

As a child you were always told to be on your absolute best behavior and never speak about your father’s origins. The world just wasn’t ready for that. You always wanted to explore beyond the walls of your family home and experience life to the fullest.

Traits: Materialistic, High Maintenance, Cat Lover

Career: Freelance Photographer

- Must have a cat that is your companion.

- Have a maximum of one best friend until you leave home.

- Get engaged as a young adult and leave them at the altar (you can cheat the engagement so they have no romance).

- Run away with your cat after the failed wedding and reduce your funds to 0 after purchasing the cheapest apartment in San Myshuno. The apartment must have the “Needs TLC” lot trait.

- Meet a poor sim who is in the criminal career.

- Elope with that sim.

- Stay in all of the vacation/rental locations in each world for at least three nights each.

- Have at least 50,000 simoleons from just the criminal career and selling photographs of the places you visit.

- Complete the City Native aspiration.

- Reach level 5 in the Photography skill.

- Have at least one child once you have at least 25,000 simoleons.

Generation 10: Belle

"People think I’m odd, so I know how it feels to be different."

Your family never had much while you were growing up, so you had to find free ways to spend your time. You always loved books and visited the library so often that it felt like your true home. - Add Greg to your family (shift+select, Add to Family) and move into the Moonwood Mill Library (you can change the lot type to residential) OR build your own library palace a la Beauty and the Beast ;)

- After you add Greg to your family, befriend at least all the leaders of the wolf packs (bonus points if you befriend all the werewolves in Moonwood Mill).

- Befriend Greg.

- Read all the books on Werewolves until you can no longer gather information from them.

- Cure Greg and then marry him.

- Once you have married Greg, move out of Moonwood Mill. You CANNOT live in any directly-occult world (Moonwood Mill, Forgotten Hollow, etc).

- Complete the Bestselling Author aspiration.

- Reach level 10 in Singing and Writing skills.

- Master the Writer career.

- Have at least one child.

Author notes: This challenge is a little harder than the others, so feel free to cheat some stuff to help your relationship with Greg. However, you may NOT directly cheat your relationship levels with him. You also must NOT become a werewolf. You must stay human.

Generation 11: Ariel

"Someday I’ll be part of your world."

Your family strived to fit in with humanity, but you never saw anything wrong with being different. Maybe it’s your father’s ties to the moon that led you to fall in love with the ocean, or maybe you hear a call from the distant past. Either way, you love collecting all things related to the water and one day you find something that changes your life forever.

Traits: Loves Outdoors, Child of the Ocean, Active

Aspiration: The Curator

Career: Conservationist

- Complete at least 5 of the following collections in your lifetime: MySims Trophies, Metals, Crystals, Elements, Fossils, Frogs, Fish, Feathers, Seashells, Buried Treasure, Message in a Bottle.

- Find and eat mermaid kelp and become a mermaid before you become a young adult.

- Fall in love with a pretty Sim that is in the Fisherman or Diver career.

- Complete The Curator aspiration.

- Master the Conservationist career and choose the “Marine Biologist” career path.

- Reach level 10 in the Fitness, Singing, and Fishing skills.

- Have at least one child.

Generation 12: Aurora

"I walked with you once upon a dream."

You never really cared for getting up at 6am to comb the beaches for seashells. You’d rather just stay inside, sit around, and lazily flip through a book or maybe just sleep forever. Ah… sleep. Doesn’t that sound nice? Your mom is a fish and your dad is just some pretty boy that lives on a secluded island, so you’re not exactly the most motivated person in the world. Your looks are about all you’ve got going for you. Your primary motivation is avoiding the sun and getting some zzz’s.

Traits: Lazy, Slob, Clumsy

Aspiration: Lady of the Knits

Career: Self-Employed - Sell your Knitted Creations

- Can have a maximum of 3 human friends.

- Reach level 10 in the Knitting skill before becoming a young adult.

- Reach level 15 in Vampire Lore before becoming an adult.

Could we get please some headcanons about Ann and Haru with a s/o that no one thinks is her s/o and how the girls would react and deal with it? Like everyone, especially strangers as well as other models and high society folks, always think s/o is just a friend, family member, assistant, pity date, someone they pay to keep away suitors, etc. That they just don't think that a super model or rich heiress would date someone as average as her s/o?

Well I guess this ask was bound to hit me eventually, this took WAY too fucking long. This was frankly much harder to do than I was expecting but here's hoping this is even at least somewhat as good as the relationship HCs.

Ann Takamaki

-This sort of situation would happen in a couple ways. If word gets out about your relationship at Shujin rumors quickly start that she was pretending to date you to make you feel better. And when you eventually start going to her photoshoots people start catching wind of it a lot of assumptions are made. You're a family member, friend, assistant, the whole shebang.

-At first you try not to let Ann know about this. You don't wanna add even more to her list of things to worry about, there's more important things she needs to be working on.

-Try as you might though, you can't hide it from her forever. Eventually at a photoshoot you end up accidentally looking a bit more...off than you intend to and she catches on.

-After gently prodding for the answer she eventually finds out. And oh boy, she is not happy. She will clear up those rumors if it's the last thing she does.

-From that point on, she makes a point to be extra affectionate in public. Whatever doubts people have about her actually loving you she will ward off with everything she has.

-If she ever kisses you in public and someone thinks she's practice kissing on a friend for an actual date there will be blood if you don't stop her.

Haru Okumura

-It first happens when Haru invites you to a gala organized by Okumura Foods. You were rather hesitant to go at first since you weren't filthy rich, but against those eyes, you couldn't find it in you to say no.

-Against your better judgment, you dressed the best you could and showed up as Haru's plus one. The sheer size and glamor of the whole place takes you aback and you immediately start feeling self-conscious.

-It unfortunately doesn't get any better. You hear murmurs behind your back that people are starting to think that you're just some rental date Haru had hired to keep people away from making moves. It's not a completely misplaced sentiment considering what happened with Sugimura, but going from the son of a well-known politician to a seemingly completely average person only added fuel to the fire.

-This only makes you more and more dejected as the evening went on. Haru picked up on this pretty quickly. After some gentle prodding, you spilled the beans to her.

-She very quickly took you somewhere outside the immediate party area and gave you a soft but stern talking to. Frankly she feels a little insulted deep down that you'd let a bunch of other people's opinions of you sway your thoughts about how she felt about you.

-It's the old reassurance of love pep talk. A bit cheesy to be sure, but coming from Haru, something about her made it really seem like she meant it.

-You two eventually go back to the party with everyone else, and this time, Haru has much less inhibitions about showing those crusty old men that you're more than just a pity/hired date. Everyone's going to walk away knowing that you're the real deal as long as she has something to say about it.

“I don’t want to be away from you,” you sob, tensing under Saeran’s gentle touch as he reaches out to rub your arm. 

“You won’t be,” he assures you, voice thickening with emotion even as he does his best to maintain a calm tone. “Not really.” 

He pulls you close. You’re turned away from him, which is strange— normally, he’s the little spoon. That only makes you feel guilty, of course— Saeran came here to rescue you because you were lured into a trap, and now, here he is, chained to the wall, laying on the floor, and inexplicably comforting you. “Please think again,” you urge, trying to twist around and look at Saeran. “There has to be another way. I’ll come back for you, I promise. I’m— I’m not leaving you.” But even as you say it, you know exactly what his response is going to be. As devastated as you are, your judgment isn’t clouded enough to convince you that Saeran is going to change his mind. He's already made his decision, after all.

“You won’t have time,” Saeran reminds you. He plants a soft kiss behind your ear. “You and Saeyoung have to finish this. I’m less important.” It hurts your heart to think that he actually believes that— in your opinion, Saeran’s safety is more of a priority than the security of a thousand worlds or whatever justice might be done against a million exploitative agencies and a billion corrupt Prime Ministers. 

“I’m not leaving you,” you repeat, perhaps a bit petulantly. It feels wrong to just go along with what he’s telling you, regardless of the stakes. 

“No,” Saeran agrees, “Of course not. Your heart will always be with me. And mine will stay with you, too, hm? Even if I’m not here, you’ll always be able to hold onto my love deep inside. That’s my promise to you, my love. Whenever you need me, I’ll always be there.” 

You grab his hand, giving it an affectionate squeeze. You still refuse to believe that you’re actually leaving Saeran— of course, you’ll go along with his plan until you know for sure that Saeyoung is safe. You know that Vanderwood will probably need help getting Saeyoung out of here in his condition, and Saeran is absolutely correct that Rika’s plans will all fall through if she isn’t able to produce both twins. But that doesn’t mean that you have any serious intention of leaving Saeran in this place. Though you lack the information and the mental clarity to make any kind of concrete plan, you can be certain that this will not be the last day that you spend with him. “I love you,” you breathe. 

“Mmm,” Saeran hums. “I love you, too. I’ll always love you, my MC. My angel, my miracle. Even if our bodies won’t be together in the same place, and even if I never get to hear your voice again, I’ll stay with you all the time. Even if my existence ends… I’ll be by your side until the end of the world.” 

You sniffle. He’s wrong. He has to be wrong— you will do everything in your power to see to it that his existence does not end, that you and he stay physically together for as long as the universe will allow it. You refuse to let some selfish couple, a team of phony hackers, and a disgraced politician tear you and Saeran apart. But either way, you need him to know that you love him just as much as he loves you. “But even when the world ends, we’ll still be together in our hearts,” you promise, “I’ll keep holding onto you as long as I can, and then after that, as long as I exist, as long as I have thoughts in my head, I’ll be loving you. No matter what happens, no matter what those bastards take from us, they won’t ever be able to stop us from loving each other, you know? When the world ends and there’s nothing left but empty space, when we go back to the stars that we came from, the space dust that is me will still try its best to drift beside the space dust that is you. I mean it, Saeran. I’m not giving up on you.” You’re beginning to ramble a bit now, but hopefully you got your message across. 

“I don’t think the world is ending any time soon,” Saeran replies, “You’ll get to live a long life full of fun experiences— you won't be giving up on me if you let yourself have fun. I’ll be happy knowing you got to live on ordinary life, free from all the trouble that I've caused you. But I’ll look forward to living in the stars together, my love. You can tell me all about everything that happened since the last time that we met.”

“Saeran, baby,” you address him over your shoulder, “I will never, ever make you wait that long.” You refuse to allow the universe to separate you from this man.

He laughs, squeezes your hand and pulls you impossibly close. “I want to savor this moment with you. I’ll cherish it in my mind for as long as I can.” You can hear the tears in his voice, the passion with which he says those words. You can feel his love in the way he holds you, in the tender feeling of his skin against your own.

“We’ll make new memories,” you assure him, “Better ones, where we’re safe and free— even as space dust.” But as you said— you will never, ever make him wait that long.

i saw someone ask another author this q and i was curious: if a stranger were to watch the exile and ROs (in the crushing stage) interact, how would you rank the ROs in terms of what the stranger would think of them from ‘just two friends!’ to ‘oh my god can they just get a room’?

From least to most obvious: Jost, Syfyn, Sabir, Amilia, Vethna, Nikke, Freedom

Jost: Jost simply does not do emotions publicly. Even if MC has the inkling that Jost is, in fact, not devoid of any and all feelings, she still needs the rest of the world to think that. So, even if she was literally screaming into her pillow at night thinking of the MC, she's going to keep that on lockdown publicly. There is quite literally nothing that could possibly even hint at Jost liking MC to a stranger. Not even Nikke would be able to tell.

Even if MC was super aggressive in flirting with her, her response would likely be annoyance/anger. MC would probably be able to tell it's because she's flustered, but anyone else would assume it's a flat out rejection.

Syfyn: Syfyn also tries not show her emotions in public, but she's not quite as good at it as Jost is: close-- but not quite. Regardless, a stranger would have no idea Syfyn liked MC-- they'd just assume they're really good friends.

If MC aggressively flirted with her in public, she'd get super flustered and wound up, but I don't think a stranger would be able to tell if Syfyn's reaction is a result of embarrassment, annoyance, anger, reciprocation, etc. Though, anyone who knows her would definitely know it's the last one.

Sabir: I think a stranger would like... have an inkling that Sabir likes MC. It would be really hard to tell since Sabir is such a stickler to politeness. He bows when he meets people, regularly does what he can to be a gentleman to everyone, and in general takes great pride in being kind to everyone (unless you're a *cough* Mevnrael or Ivante *cough*). Also, the way Sabir flirts when in public is very subtle-- it might be a hand on the back, a whisper in the ear, a coy hidden smile, etc. Some might be more suspicious than others, but in general, they're also all actions that a conspiratorial politician does when gossiping or trying to hide information.

If MC flirted with him in public, I still don't know if a stranger would be able to tell if it was a mutual crush thing? Anyone who knows Sabir would definitely know Sabir is flirting back, but otherwise his responses to MC's quips might just seem like polite responses to someone who's coming on too strong.

So... in general... I would say a stranger would just be completely and utterly confused on the nature of the relationship. A sort of "will they, won't they" type beat.

Amilia: A stranger would definitely be able to tell Amilia has a crush on MC after a few minutes of watching. Amilia blushes very easily, especially when the Commander is involved, and on top of that she gets a serious case of the puppy dog eyes whenever MC is in her sights. Other than that, I think she's a lot more bubbly when with an MC she has a crush on otherwise. She'll be a lot more prone to giggle-fits and smiles a lot.

If MC flirts with Amilia in public... oh god, is it going to be apparent. Amilia will be reduced to a stumbling mess and said stranger might even feel a bit bad for how bad Amilia's crushing.

Vethna: Vethna's affection is very apparent and not something they try to hide. Honestly, I think anyone observing MC + Vethna would probably just assume they're already in a relationship and have been together for months, if not longer. I think while that excitement of a crush is still there for them both, there's also this deep comfort/sense of respite in finding someone who understands them. So they kinda skip over the super affectionate honeymoon phase and land in the comfortable/reliable part of a relationship (to a stranger).

I honestly think a flirty MC would only further solidify this-- Vethna would respond in amused but polite quips that tell MC to tone it down in public, only further making someone think whatever it is between them has been going on for a while.

Nikke: People are going to be begging for MC + Nikke to get a room not because they're being sexual in public, but because dear god they will not stop bickering like a married couple. Do this, do that, no not that way, this way-- the arguing is so precise and on the nose that it's impossible to not tell MC + Nikke have some sort of tension between each other, and whatever it is, it's personal and passionate. It's like through their aggression they automatically make people go "oh, yeah, they're totally a thing." If they're not doing that, I think Nikke is like... surprisingly soft with MC once he realizes his emotions are solid? Not mushy gushy or anything, but just genuine with doting undertones. And if he's not doing that, he's definitely teasing them like a schoolboy with a crush.

And if MC flirts with Nikke in public... well, then people are gonna be begging for them to get a room because dear god do they need to get a room.

Freedom: Gods have mercy. That's all I can really say. The flirtatious manner that Freedom has towards MC while in their head/invisible to everyone else stays the same long after they've been given a physical form-- which means that everyone else also has to deal with listening to Freedom's flirtations towards MC. They're shameless and have no idea what personal boundaries are in public. Will they push it too far if MC allows them to? Absolutely.

Honestly, it largely depends on MC to keep them in check. Otherwise... 👀

GRACE TOUR Diary - March 17th 2025, Seoul

It was two days before her tour officially started.

Grace wasn’t going to shy away from the fact that her stomach was in knots and she was getting very little sleep due to nerves. Her mind was in constant turmoil over things that may go wrong, something may happen, this thing might happen, this costume may not fit. Her team had planned for everything and anything including weather, backup costumes, backup shoes, and even a backup team.

Nothing could go wrong yet her brain was thinking otherwise.

Her days started early, around 6am, with a couple of meetings with her team (affectionately known as the Queen’s Guard), then it was vocal rehearsals then dance practice and depending on the day, a couple of hours in the gym to get her stamina up while singing.

She hadn’t performed on her own before, especially for a two hour concert. There was no opening act, no other acts on as support - it would just be her, the band and the dancers.

To keep the crowd entertained.

A crowd that probably had come to see her fail.

That was one of her worries - it wasn’t that ARMY wasn’t going to turn up, it was all the haters as well. And not only that, she had seen the list of celebrities who had secured their VIP tickets early. That made her nervous.

And all the dates had sold out fast to the point where extra dates had to be added and the two last dates in Seoul had sold out within minutes, including the VIP tickets for idols, celebrities, and politicians.

It would be her peers carefully watching - wondering if she could perform on her own, if she could handle the weight, if she could handle her own songs, choreography, high notes and costumes. She’d be fine once the first song was done because after that, who gave a shit.

But for now, it was the constant thoughts that were keeping her up all hours of the night.

Seokjin & Hobi were home from the military now and they had been constant support, checking in and being there for whatever meeting or practice was taking place while dealing with their own schedules and plans. The others had been checking in as well through phone calls and texts, keeping an eye on the progress.

Her eyes stared at the night sky from where her curtains were open and if she listened carefully, she could hear some of the population of Seoul still going even at three in the morning. She had gotten about four hours of sleep and she had to be up in an hour to get showered and ready to head over to HYBE for a final day of rehearsals.

The weight of her cat next to her pressed into her side and she reached over, running a hand down the soft white fur. At least one of them was getting his beauty sleep. Seeing as there was no point, Grace carefully got out of bed and padded over to the bathroom. There were bags starting to form under her eyes, so that meant the make up team were going to complain, but the hot shower helped relax her muscles. Her newly dyed hair had stayed it’s amazing shade of blonde and she kept forgetting about it until it caught her eye in the mirror. That had been Seokjin’s suggestion - new hair colour for a new era.

She had a small breakfast and filled up Min-Ji’s food and water bowls, taking her small cup of tea to the living room where she plonked herself on the couch. The news played in the background as she pulled her phone off charge, seeing if there were any updates from anyone but the messages remained silent.

“With two days to go, fans are already queuing for merchandise and to experience what HYBE has put on in terms of a festival around the Gocheok Sky Dome. BTS’ Grace Chu will start her first solo tour here before heading over to Los Angeles and the rest of the world. The In My Head Tour has already sold out across the globe and no tickets are available, anywhere. However, HYBE has offered live streaming of the last two Seoul dates for those who have missed out on what is expected to be the tour of the year,” the newscaster said on the TV, catching Grace’s attention.

The program showed the tents already lining up and some of the things HYBE had planned, including reruns of RUN BTS episodes, focus solely on Grace and even her BT21 character was around. Fans had the opportunity to take pictures with various cardboard cutouts of her and it warmed her to see how many ARMY bombs were already lit.

“We can’t wait,” one foreign ARMY said once the camera was on her. “I’ve been in Seoul for about three years now and the moment I heard she was planning a tour, I knew I had to buy tickets. She’s my bias and she really inspires me as a woman and as an artist. She’s different from other idols as well - she doesn’t let her career define her or her character and she doesn’t care if she goes against the standards this country sets her in. She’s really an icon of this age.”

Another ARMY appeared, this time a male fan who had one of her t-shirts on. “There are many comments online about how she contrasts against the likes of IU, Blackpink, and she can’t compare really. She’s humble, quiet, unassuming yet insanely talented. I’ve watched so many fancams and videos from fans of other artists and in every one of them she’s consistent. So I’m really looking forward to what she’s going to bring for her solo tour.”

The program returned to the newscaster who showed figures of what income this tour was going to bring to HYBE, Big Hit, the tourism economy and the government. And what the stakeholders' shares were climbing to. All in all, it was going to be a commercial success.

Whether it was going to get the ratings like Yoongi’s and Blackpinks tour, as they were the two being used in comparison the most, that would remain to be seen.

Grace swallowed the last of her tea and stood, stretching out her legs and back. “Well, let’s get this tour on the road then.”

SIGHING the age difference between margaery and sansa is p big for teenagers! margaery is closer to jon and robb's age than sansa's. margaery and her family actively pursued an interest in elevating her to queen from at least the first book if not longer, tywin was actively trying to arrange a marriage between cersei and rhaegar before the maggy scene, which takes place when cersei was younger than sansa is at the beginning of the series. ned and catelyn had barely discussed sansa's options before joffrey shows up; they might have thought of it later or they might have chosen someone else. the wealthy southern houses are ambitious, but starks rarely send their daughters south to marry. sansa has talent and big dreams, and cat would at least think to take that into account. likely cat was expecting to marry her into another great house, but we know cat wanted her kids to be happy?? and be children?? for as long as they can. she was surprised and a little upset that robb was wearing live steel, even tho he's nearly an adult by westerosi standards and competent enough to manage winterfell when she understandably neglects her duties while bran is in his coma.

this is not a bad thing!! this is reasonable!! and cat did teach sansa how to be a lady the same way ned taught robb and jon to be a lord, through example and demonstration. all highborn girls have lessons with a septa, not least to occupy them while the boys are practicing hitting each other with swords. sansa and arya were also given lessons with maester luwin, which is a significant advantage that not all highborn girls get. and honestly this solid foundation gave sansa and arya the tools they needed to survive thus far!!

catelyn was expecting sansa (and arya!) to continue her education at court, under the supervision of ned and with the help of septa mordane. and cersei did try to educate her in her own terrible way––catelyn could not have known how incompetent cersei was (honestly cersei had robert killed in an incredibly sophisticated way that would still be hard to prove in real court, she is a lot more together in the first book). ned resolved to end the betrothal as soon as he saw what joffrey was like, he definitely believed revealing joffrey's parentage would make this easy.

margaery came to king's landing with an army at her back, knowing there was a possibility, however slim, of the lannisters rejecting an alliance. she knew she was entering a city her family had been starving out for months!! she brought food!!! she was prepared. she knew exactly what she was getting into!! loras had almost definitely been feeding the tyrells information about the court for years, if only so they'd know what was going on lol.

the tyrells are absolutely the lannisters' foils, I think that's pretty clear? margaery is the political powerhouse cersei wants to be, and she has the support and respect cersei craves. loras is the new Best Tourney Knight who mostly lives up to the ideals jaime strives for without really trying, and his relationship actually is unfairly discriminated against instead of just creepy (affectionate). willas is the scholarly heir trusted absolutely, like his claim is so rock solid he is just left with the castle, and he has a more 'socially acceptable' disability (in tyrion's mind especially!). like they are both engaged to sansa even. and olenna is who tywin thinks he is, except she also has the power of being a reasonable adult who would prefer that people (not joffrey) didn't get hurt. then garlan is just a good guy, all the lannisters wish they had a garlan

for the record, also, sansa tried to 'talk up' joffrey because she was terrified. she does not like anything about joffrey at this point and is desperately trying to think of things to say that won't get her killed?? what olenna and margaery do so well, and what is indicative of their strength as politicians and the power of being nice to people, is put sansa at ease enough that she's willing to tell them the truth. like yes sansa was fully deluding herself at one point, accepting joffrey's apology for lady's death, but she starts to hate him as soon as he has ned arrested (and their household killed??). how many of us can say we have not gone a little delusional over a crush in middle school regardless of what our parents taught us. lmao.

cat and ned may not have prepared sansa to be queen but they are the reason alayne is still kind, and that is why she inspires the kind of loyalty littlefinger can't, which will prove to be her greatest weapon.

hello humphrey!! I don't know if you've been asked this before, but who is your favorite ghost to hang out with? I know they forget about you pretty often, but it seems like they could all be genuinely good friends despite that.

Although they’re all rather, er, you know, towards me at the best of times, I don’t think it’ll be fair of me just to choose one, so I’m going to list a couple of good reasons for every ghost if that’s okay with you!!

Think I’ll start with the sweetest of the bunch: Kitty. She’s a lovely friend for exactly that. She’s a ray of sunshine with a smile who can really bright up even the dullest of days. I’ve always had a soft spot for her; she really is the baby of the group. After all, I got to watch her grow up and become the lovely young woman we all know and love today. Maybe she’s the niece I didn’t get to have, who knows.

Now, Pat. My fellow pain in the neck. Without him, my afterlife would somehow be even worse. His clubs and ideas of mashing up the old with the new to keep us entertained does us all a world of good, even if I can’t quite participate (or even be bloody bought over to) most clubs at a time, he makes the others happy which, in turn, makes me happy too.

Julian is, how you say, a double edged sword. He’s great if you want to party which at times I really do, and he’s also rather willing to put his powers into action. We’ve bonded a lot recently over this very blog, actually, and I’ve come to learn that, under it all, there really is a politician who listens from time to time. That politician can be all ears with me, too, which I really appreciate. He also provides a… er, interesting view from time to time. Cough.

Next, The Captain. He’s one of the few who will give my body a go at. In a good way, an innocent way. It may have taken him a couple decades to look me in the eye but, he can be some great company. He’s always keeping it physical. Not sure what he really feels about me though, that one’s puzzled me for decades.

Thomas is where things can get a little tough. In truth, he’s a lost little lamb. His artistic vision is something else entirely, so I do enjoy having a fellow creative soul in the house. He also provides the most lifts for me (he is my Uber) and I cannot knock him for that. He remembers me the most, and boots me the most. So, uh, yeah. Never quite know where I stand with him, but I have a soft spot for the idiot anyways. Unpopular opinion about Thomas: he deserves to be loved, too.

Mary was an amazing woman. She was wild, a little too the left, with a heart of gold. She also affectionately called me ‘Head Bit’ which I can now freely admit to missing greatly. She was the ghost who came to be after me and bought me much closer to the ‘real world’ as it was of our times. Like me, she was kind of misunderstood and taken for granted, too. I think we found common ground in that way back when. We didn’t hang out much, so to speak, though I doubt she’d regret that!

It’s always been a little tough with Fanny. She’s never thought highly of me, sure, but I try to not let that get to me now. We’ve had our softer moments, sure, and our harder ones, yeah. She’s softening up again to us all now though, and maybe she can let me in this time.

Last, but absolutely not least, is Robin. Mine and my wife’s oldest, wisest friend. Now we may not get to hang out as much as we used to, he’s got a lot of mates and distractions nowadays but, I know deep down, he really does care for me. He’s never stopped caring in coming up on 500 years which, damn, that’s quite a feat. Plus, no one really gave a crap about me in life and, I like to pretend that he did even if now I know he found his fun elsewhere. That’s ok, though. He’ll always come through for me in the end. He’s a true friend I feel lucky to have.

My goodness this is a very long response! I hope it’s worth your while, anon. Come to think of it, I’m not really sure I have a best friend of this bunch nor have a particular favourite of who to hang out with. It’s really just whoever may remember to bring me alone with them. Usually that’s Thomas, all things considered. And I’m ok with that, I think. ❤️

My baby girl. My muse. The ultimate inspo. When I first created Charlie I was not expecting her to have such an impact on my life, but I cannot imagine not writing for her now. I love how complicated she is. Cruel yet maternal, materialistic and vain yet loves her partners and few loved ones unconditionally, manipulative yet brutally honest about who she is. She’s just a fun character and I’m so proud of having created her.

I haven’t really thought about Mathilda much in years, and I certainly have much older girlies from when I made OCs for Pirates of The Caribbean and Interview with The Vampire in middle school, but she was the first OC I created in years when I was hyperfixating on Vikings back in 2017. She’s a sweet girl, much different from a lot of my current ocs. She’s naive and innocent. An orphan who was raised in a convent. But, like a lot of my girls, she can’t help falling for a bad guy. One day I’ll get back to her/move her to a new fandom that’s more deserving of her.

My baby girl Mack is my newest girlie. She came about when I realized we were severely lacking in Claire ships and well, I needed to provide. She’s another sweet girl. A young politician’s daughter who is just trying to survive a world that she was never raised to be prepared for. I’m excited to start fleshing her out more and she’s been on the mind a lot these last few days.

It was hard to choose between her and Charlie, but Dylan is cold as ice. She very rarely prioritizes the feelings of others and can be pretty harsh on them as well. One of the few people that she shows unconditional kindness and love to is her daughter, Rory. Besides that, everyone else is just another potential mark. Until she meets Zsasz that is 🙈

Softest OC

Gwen is my ultimate baby girl. She’s incredibly sensitive, optimistic, and views the world through rose-colored glasses. Very much a glass half full kinda girl. I mean, one of her main hobbies is writing love poems for her man. She’s a very rare type of character for me to write and I miss her everyday. Too bad the Arcane fandom is batshit.

Of course it’s Charlie. And the funny thing is, she’s not even really that dumb. She’s actually fairly intelligent, but she has a talent for being able to completely ignore red flags despite actually being aware they exist. She’s also willing to shove common sense to the side when it comes to love or someone hurting her ego. When she actually does use her brain everyone is surprised by the shit she manages to accomplish.

OC I’d be Friends with IRL

Courtney! She’s the best of both worlds. She’s a tough, take no shit kinda girl, but she’s also very sweet and will have anyone’s back if they prove to be a decent person. She also has great taste in music and she’s insanely personable from being a popular bartender, so I think she would just be fun to hang out with.

since I was asked by @envylimes (<3) to share the essay I wrote for a class on not me and how it’s queer I’m posting it here under the read more! it’s like 2.3k words and I just put it as plain text so be prepared to scroll sdkjfhksd

The Thai romance-action drama Not Me, directed by Nuchy Anucha Boonyawatana and starring Gun Atthaphan Phunsawat as White/Black and Off Jumpol Adulkittiporn as Sean, is a terrifically queer series. Even as it belongs to the already queer BL (boys’ love) genre, it stands out due to its attitude towards and display of queerness along with containing a heavily political theme. In this fourteen episode series, the filmmakers manage to cover topics including queer love and community, marriage (in)equality in Thailand, the importance of art, police brutality, anti-capitalism, and how the Thai government and justice system fails certain minority groups. For the sake of simplicity, the focus of this analysis will mainly be on episodes seven and fourteen. 

There are four main overarching plots in Not Me. The series opens with an introduction to the twins White and Black (both played by Gun Atthaphan) and soon reveals that Black has been beaten up into a coma. White learns this from their childhood friend Todd (Sing Harit Cheewagaroon), causing him to return from Russia to take his twin’s place and uncover who’s behind the beating. While disguised as Black, White meets the people his brother works with to fight against injustices in society. Sean, Yok, Gram, and Gumpa make up the other characters in this gang. The romance that forms between Sean and White is the other primary plot in Not Me. Following this is the second couple, Yok (played by First Kanaphan Puitrakul) and Dan (played by Fluke Gawin Caskey), who meet while Yok commits arson against Tawi, a major antagonist, as Dan paints political art expressing his frustrations. Later, Yok discovers Dan is also a cop. The fourth main plot has more to do with the political theme of the series. Tawi, as mentioned before, is the major antagonist because of who he is and represents. He is a politician and businessman who has the ability to run the country according to his desires based on his extreme wealth and consequently power. He represents both capitalism and the real life Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha. The gang spends much of their time trying to take him down through different means. In the same strain, Not Me promotes an anti-capitalist, anti-cop ideology. The characters also have a particular involvement with fighting for marriage equality in Thailand, as this is part of the other running theme of the series. 

The main goal of Not Me is tied to this last point, to push these anti-capitalist, anti-cop, and equality for everyone beliefs. As the director, Boonyawatana has stated on multiple occasions that she, along with the other writers, use BL series as an opportunity to “express our voice[,] especially all social and political topics that [are] featured in this series.” Not Me also provides an interesting combination of the typical BL tropes within the genre and Boonyawatana’s more surrealist style, which furthers the queerness of the series. As soon as Sean appears, it becomes full of BL clichés; Sean and White stare into each other’s eyes for long periods of time, fighting gets turned into intimate moments, one holds the other’s waist while riding a motorcycle, Sean catches White when he falls, and so on. At the same time, Boonyawatana’s style does not fail to shine through. The almost supernatural connection the twins share, the intimacy of Sean and White’s first sex scene, and dream sequences that make the audience question if it was real are all along her familiar surrealist style. Because Not Me is a BL, and especially because it stars Off Jumpol and Gun Atthaphan (the pair affectionately known together as “OffGun”) who have starred in romantic dramas together several times prior and again subsequently, the target audience is those who watch BL series. It’s common for this audience to be teen girls and women, but within this and outside are many queer viewers. This is a series that would resonate with the audience, as well as work to convince those who do not already share the ideology within the series. It’s important to note that Boonyawatana is a trans woman as well. As a part of the LGBTQ+ community, her perspective on creating this series is intrinsically queer. Since Not Me is a Thai series, the Thai audience would likely have a much better understanding of politics than those who don’t live in Thailand, but it also takes the opportunity to bring these issues to the attention of people who tune in globally. Without a doubt, Not Me makes a statement that it wants lots of people to see. 

Episode 7 is by far the strongest in emphasizing marriage equality. White and Gram first attend a protest against Tawi, which includes how his monopolies discriminate and how “women and LGBTQ+ people are underrepresented.” Later, they visit the tents set up nearby and run into their friend Nuch, urging people to sign a petition in support of the same sex marriage law amendment. She tells them, “LGBT folks need to get support from a place full of people. Especially, any event addressing basic human rights and social injustice.” This fits well within the theme of the series. LGBT+ rights are basic human rights, and are connected to the injustices caused by capitalism. Not Me takes this episode as a chance to address the audience as much as it possibly can. Nuch shows White and Gram a QR code they can scan to help support this petition, and through the cinematic eye, the audience can scan that exact tight shot of the QR code and lead themselves to a real petition in support of same sex marriage (support1448.org). Nuch continues talking to the audience through the two, “most people might not think it’s necessary but consider it, you or people around you might be needing this. Have you signed up?” At this moment the viewer would be questioned if they’ve shown their support for marriage equality, and to take the time to do so if they hadn’t already. 

The scene that follows is arguably the queerest of the whole series, or perhaps even the whole genre. White stays after the protests for a marriage equality fashion show where (assumably) queer people walk on a giant pride flag runway. As White looks across the crowd he sees Sean from afar, who has visited the scene as well. Together, the crowd lifts the pride flag and White runs under, meeting Sean in the middle. The two hold hands as they chant “Tawi, get out!” and “marriage equality!” It is a crucial scene that both advances the romance between Sean and White as it highlights the importance and beauty of queer love. These characters literally find love as they protest capitalism and heteronormativity. Significantly, the scene was added just three days before shooting as a direct response to the Thai government upholding section 1448 of the constitution, which states that only a man and woman can marry. Boonyawatana explained she was “quite [shocked] with the verdict because the reason made no sense so [she] thought to add…the scene of the mob” and that she was able to contact LGBTQ+ activists that she had spent time with in the past for the sequence. The scene was inspired by true pride events in Thailand where the pride flag was used in a similar way. 

In the same episode, Dan and Yok’s relationship develops as the two get to know more about each other. Dan explains to Yok that he wants to “make things better than they are now” when asked why he’s a cop, and Yok, who has seen him paint political art against the government, says, “you can’t do it as a cop, can you?” It is later discovered that Dan had (though horrifically) mistakenly shot Sean’s father who had smuggled drugs for Tawi and got away with it, initiating Sean’s hatred for both Tawi and cops. Despite the trust Yok puts in him to help them fight against Tawi, Dan still eventually betrays the gang due to his faith in the justice system. Not Me is consistent. Upon reflection, none of the plot twists are too surprising. Dan, the “good” cop, shot Sean’s dad and later betrays the gang; Todd, growing more rich and itching to become the next Tawi, put Black into a coma. When Dan betrays Yok and the gang, Yok tells him, “do you still believe in the justice system? You said you’d like to redeem yourself and fix what you did wrong. You didn’t want to be part of the system. Why are you doing this?” Although it is Dan hurting the others, the “you” in this instance may once again refer to the audience, to break whatever faith they had left in the justice system. Dan can only attain redemption and continue his relationship with Yok in episode 14, when he leaves the system and quits being a cop. He must leave, he cannot succeed to help people within the system that is set up to fail those within it. The same goes for White, whose father is a diplomat, who earlier in the series learns of the injustices and decides to fight for their rights instead ignoring the problems in society and going back to his privileged sheltered life before. “Isn’t this obvious?” Sean says when Dan betrays them. And it is. 

Another pivotal plot point occurs in episode 14, when the gang are captured by Tawi’s men and put into a van with bags over their heads, intent on making them disappear. Whether they’ll live or die and the question of time passing in the suffocating atmosphere fits Boonyawatana’s style once again. Yok cries for his mother as he imagines she won’t be able to handle his disappearance; Sean laments how painful it is that they’re easily capable of making him and the others disappear; White acknowledges that despite everything, they did not lose. Just as they are about to accept their fate, the van runs into a crowd of people who had learned of this kidnapping. The mob protests and bangs on the van until finally they’re able to free the gang. After the final episode aired, the entire scene was revealed to be based on true events that occurred a little over a year prior, in 2020. Police had taken three protesters who spoke out against the monarchy into a van and arrested them. While a mob formed outside and shouted for the police to set them free, they were still arrested. This was just one part of the 2020-2021 protests against Prayut Chan-o-cha’s rule in Thailand after the military coup in 2014. Not Me was announced at the end of 2020, and aired from late 2021-early 2022. Nowhere in the series does it directly address Prayut Chan-o-cha, likely due to the restrictions against speaking out against the government, but near to everything, even the smaller lines of dialogue, are an extremely thinly veiled allegory–so thin it might as well not exist–towards the current political climate. For example, in episode 6, White and Sean have a small debate on whether risking their life for the cause is worth it, and White uses a “metaphor” involving a pedestrian collision, which again references the real life issue of crosswalk accidents occurring in Thailand. In episode 4, Gumpa asks the gang “is there any issue in our society you’d like to address?” to which Yok, who has a deaf mother, responds, “I want to address disability rights.” While the series does not go into depth about disability injustices in Thailand it does take a moment to acknowledge that there are many issues the country currently faces. 

Not Me focuses on community, queer art, and queer love as power against capitalism and military rule. As is typical for many BLs, the characters can all be assumed queer until proven otherwise. Sean & White and Dan & Yok never discuss their sexuality, come out, or have fear that the other would not reciprocate their feelings due to their being a man. Instead, the emphasis is on how they “can still work hand in hand,” something Sean says to White as he literally holds tightly onto White’s hand as they proceed to break into Tawi’s warehouse to expose his drug business. The series features much art as a form of expression as well. Dan paints his true beliefs through his anti-government paintings; Eugene, Black’s ex-girlfriend, performs interpretive dances that critique capitalism; Namo, Sean’s friend, use graffiti to get out her emotions along with Sean; and perhaps most importantly, Yok’s nude art project, in which he draws Dan that causes him to confess, is about proletariat expressionism. The artist behind Yok’s paintings, Oat Montien (who also acts as Yok’s professor), is both queer himself, works on nude portraits, and has described his art as “a love letter to queer people,” has stated that after working with the actors he said, “if this series [becomes] a success please don’t forget to fight for our rights” to which First Kanaphan responded, “I promise I’ll be fighting until you can get married in this country.” Just like Black tells White, and indirectly the audience, in the beginning of the series, “don’t let anyone take advantage of you. If you don’t fight, you’ll never win. Promise me you will fight.” 

The series ends with a shared kiss between Sean and White. “This is what we call fulfilled,” Sean tells him. But he isn’t just talking about the kiss nor just towards White. It’s a call to the viewers, that even though the fight isn’t over, Tawi’s second in command has been arrested and Tawi himself is next, that the same thing can happen outside the series in the real world, and that queer love really is fulfilling. As of May 2023, the Move Forward Party, with policies that oppose the military rule, has won in the recent Thai election and its leader, Pita Limjaroenrat may be set as the new Prime Minister. The injustices fought against in Not Me already reflect the current society, but the goal of the characters, filmmakers, cast, and all the real people that inspired or had scenes based off of in this series may hopefully soon become reality.

2) They have a private cabana at Volcano Bay

“Exactly how private are these private cabanas?” Han Solo asks as he follows his wife up the wooden stairs.

“This private,” Leia answers over her shoulder, pushing open to reveal the least private thing Han has ever seen. It’s literally open-air. 

“So, they were lying when they advertised this to us, then,” Han grumbles, stepping into the cabana and casting a judgmental glare at every inch of it. The vibrantly-patterned chair cushions, the string lights strung up around the room, and the aqua-blue curtains that still leave the entire front of the cabana exposed.

“Yeah, pretty much,” Leia replies smoothly, placing her bag on one of the chairs. 

“What’s even the point of a private cabana if everyone can see you while you’re in it? Isn’t the definition of “private” where people can’t see you?” Han continues ranting, gesturing around at the entire stupid structure.

“Definitely not,” Leia retorts, scoffing (affectionately). (Han can tell.)

“You don’t seem as disappointed as I am, Your Worship,” Han points out, raising an eyebrow. Leia smacks him in response to the nickname, which was pretty pointless, in Han’s opinion, considering how much she secretly enjoys it. 

“I don’t have my mind in the gutter,” Leia informs him, giving him a scolding look.

“Oh, so wanting to kiss my wife is considered having my mind in the gutter now?” Han banters back, soaking his tone in incredulousness. 

“No, it’s considered being a scoundrel,” Leia clarifies, stepping closer, flirtatiousness sparking in her dark mahogany eyes. 

“That’s exactly what I am,” Han murmurs with a grin, leaning in until he can feel her rapid breathing against his cheek. He slowly captures her lips with his, and she kisses right back. They keep it gentle, soft, and slow, but it still sends Han’s heart pumping like there’s no tomorrow.

“GET A ROOM!” a youthful, voice-crack-infested voice yells out. Honestly, Han was surprised that didn’t happen earlier. The couple mutually pull away; Leia, whose cheeks are flushed pink, seeming just as unsurprised as Han.

“THAT IS LITERALLY WHAT WE DID!” Han yells back. Leia smacks his shoulder.  

“Don’t encourage him,” she scolds.

“Where’s the fun in that?” Han shoots back, shaking his head, but relents, settling down onto one of the chairs, Leia doing the same next to him. 

“The fun is, we get to enjoy the last few minutes before everyone else gets here,” Leia responds, that bit of flirtatiousness returning to her expression.

“Touche,” Han admits, placing one arm around her, resting a hand on her waist. She leans into his touch, sending warmth shooting through him at about the same time as a realization.

“Is there a reason we came up here before everyone else? Just the two of us?” Han asks, a smirk in his tone. 

“To check out the cabana before everyone else got here,” Leia replies, innocence implied by her casual tone.

“And why would we need to do that?” Han poses a great question, if he does say so himself. 

“To make sure there were no issues checking in, obviously,” she answers, casting her eyes up to meet his gaze. 

“There wasn’t any ulterior motive?” he asks, a crooked smirk curving the corner of his mouth.

A flash of embarrassment on her face, which she quickly covers with sarcasm. “Politicians never have ulterior motives,” she tells him.

“Never,” Han replies, his smirk widening. “Sounds like I've been a bad influence on you, Princess.”

“There are worse influences to have,” she says, leaning her head on his shoulder.

Han presses a kiss to the top of her head. “I’ll take that as a compliment.”

I'm so tired of people claiming being a kataang fan just makes you a aang stan first who has zero respect for katara and nor a true katara fan when we aren't purposely ignoring canon of her being the one to suggest kissing and being super affectionate with aang. They ignore katara clearly telling toph she dislikes being viewed as a mom while antis insist momtara is canon

Kataang fans show way more respect for katara than they do they treat enjoying canon as a moral failing and I'm tired of em acting like kataang fans are shallow sexist men when plenty of us happen to be women enjoying canon shouldn't be so controversial

the “kataang stans are primarily aang stans that don’t care about katara” is such a ridiculous take to me because there’s so many kataang fans I’ve met that prefer katara. a lot of us are in fandom spaces creating said kataang content and making kataang defense arguments about katara’s role in the relationship and the many positive ways it benefits her. i would not be shipping kataang as hard as i do if there weren’t clear substantial evidence that katara is crazy about that boy in her own ways, and feels passionate towards him in a way that she doesn’t feel towards other members of the gaang. yet her feelings for him are either categorized as motherly love and affection or her appreciating him only when he’s the avatar and fulfilling avatar duties. I’ve mentioned this before, but to truly appreciate kataang as a ship or even katara & aang’s bond (platonic or romantically), you need to be well-versed in katara’s character. and thankfully, a lot of kataang fans engaging in fandom can understand and write katara really well, even if they prefer aang among the two.

kataang fans have created and/or produced post-atla headcanons such as katara creating hospitals, working clinic rotations, inventing the infrastructure of the public health care system for republic city, establishing republic city alongside aang (which is pretty much canon as per imbalance and avatar legends), chief katara, sitting on the republic city council, opening up waterbending schools, and plenty more. we’ve always been the main ones pushing the “master katara and her husband avatar aang” comments, until it was finally canonized in avatar legends lore. we’ve been the main ones emphasizing that katara is still a child (albeit a very mature one), who still often acts like a child and ought to be treated like one in fandom. we’ve criticized the adultification & hypersexualization of katara by fandom when she’s still a 14 year old kid in the original series. there’s also a very strange fascination towards katara in her fire nation attire over her practical and adorable water tribe outfits by the fandom, which we’ve also critiqued too. notice how there’s a lot less content of katara in our fandom spaces wearing her husband’s colours or clothes? because we also recognize her unique position as a genocide survivor and how important her culture is to her, even well into her adult life. also, the notion that we vehemently defend the writing and neglect of katara in most of the GLY comics and LOK is so laughable. just because we clearly disagree with incorrect labels such as housewife, baby-maker/breeding machine, trophy wife, does NOT mean that we find the writing 100% satisfiable and true to her original character. of course she deserved a statue & her accomplishments to be highlighted. of course she should’ve attended jinora’s airbending ceremony. of course she should’ve been present at her own bloodbending trial. all of these are very valid, fandom-wide criticisms that we have aimed towards the creators as well. if the recent comics written by bryke and other printed media from avatar studios are to provide any indication, i think they have listened to the fandom. and I think that that 2025 gaang movie will provide more nuance to katara’s adult character as a fighter, healer, politician, wife, and maybe as a mother than what we had witnessed in legend of korra a decade ago.

even if the majority of kataang fans prefer aang’s character, why is that necessarily a problem? does that mean that we understand katara less? because let me tell you, a lot of people from other parts of this fandom will willingly call themselves a katara fan, yet blatantly have the most incorrect interpretations about her, or straight up only view the value in her character when she’s beside zuko. they will only be interested in engaging with her character and making content for her character when it pertains to their ship. by comparison, so many kataang fans love and adore katara, view her as their fave character, create content solely about katara, have written some of the best meta about her character out there; yet we get accused of not valuing her character and seeing her only as “aang’s trophy wife.”

I used to be really hard on Yuuki and don’t get me wrong she still kind of annoys me sometimes but I learned to appreciate her and give her more grace. Yes, she’s naive to her detriment sometimes but it is because of this softness she has that she’s able to unconditionally love Kaname and try to understand him when no one else did. Even if you disregard the romance, she was the one who never gave up on him and never stopped caring about him. She did some pretty crazy things for Kaname too if you think about it. She didn’t want him throwing his heart in the furnace despite the fact that humanity needed it. That’s a really big deal. She would basically sacrifice humanity to have Kaname alive. In vkm she was in a depressive state and considering murdering all purebloods so she could revive Kaname again willing to put aside her previous beliefs to have Kaname alive.

I know that was a hard time for her but it really shows where her heart is at. She is also similar to Kaname in a way because she has more goals and desires in life than simply romance. This is something both sides don’t really consider but it’s very easy to miss but it’s there. I don’t even think she’s aware of it herself. She just helps without expecting anything in return because it’s her nature.

She spent a big portion of her life trying to help people and she took on the job of a politician even tho it’s not her thing. I wish vkm did more favors to her and focused on her development as an individual lol it is what it is. The main series even said she learned to be affectionate from Kaname and he inspired her coexistence beliefs. It’s good to have opposites together because they bring different things to the table. If we had Kaname be with a “strong” female then that wouldn’t have ended well I mean look at him and the Hooded woman xD Besides the idea of what a strong female is so complex and different to each person.

Not only that but she is brave enough to love Kaname while being able to call him out when he’s in the wrong like she did many times in the manga and he loved her for that too. Her morals were pretty consistent throughout the manga which is pretty cool. She’s a bit idealistic but that’s a good thing we need the positivity. The only times she almost strayed from her morals are when it comes to Kaname and he stops her or in vkm when she was so frustrated at the vampire king wannabe (forgot the exact plot line lol) that she almost killed him and ultimately it was Kaname who stopped her and reminded her of who she is and cuz he didn’t ever want her to lose her sweetness and light like he did. Yuuki might not be academically smart but she ultimately has a good heart and she was brave enough to step up and be a leader and take action. Oh and forgot that she’s a good mother to Ai too. It must have been hard being alone but she did it and made it through. This is especially surprising given the fact in the original series she never mentioned wanting kids. Idk if this was intentional but she ended up maybe surprising herself and stepping up to become a mother and become more mature
