𓂃  ⊹ jackielot dating deaf!reader 🧏🏻‍♀️
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
they've been putting in a lot of effort to learn sign language for you. lottie even convinced her parents to hire a private tutor. initially, you thought it was unnecessary, as you could teach them yourself. however, they insisted, wanting to learn it faster and properly.
whenever they learn a new phrase or word, they eagerly rush to you to show you. and it’s painfully obvious how jackie subtly directs your conversations to "casually" drop the new sign she's learned 😭😭 you think it's cute though, so you refrain from teasing her about it.
besides sign language, the three of you have developed a silent language to communicate more effectively. it includes gentle taps, specific gestures, or a certain number of squeezes. it's become so intuitive that even your girlfriends use these signals between themselves, sometimes even when you're not around, without realizing it.
they're having a bit too much fun with the sign language tho, especially during exams. "i'm not helping you cheat, jackie," you discreetly signed back at her, being cautious so the teacher wouldn't notice. jackie pouted at you but couldn't hide her silly smile.
they’re also practically forcing the other yellowjackets to learn it as well. while some of them are lazier or barely friends with you, they've managed to get all of them to learn at least ten basic words to communicate with you, even if it's just to say hi.
so far, shauna is the most advanced, likely because she spends a lot of time with jackie. you suspect your girlfriend probably put up a fight to ensure shauna learned this much. nevertheless, you're grateful because now you can have intermediate conversations with her, and you have to admit that sometimes it's nice to sign with someone other than your girlfriends.
jackie's love language is physical touch, which makes her incredibly content in your relationship. you often depend on her touch or gestures for communication when you can't rely on lip-reading or hand signals, and jackie is more than happy to comply.
on the other hand, lottie leans more towards words of affirmation, but this hasn't posed any challenges in your relationship. she consistently expresses her affection through little notes and messages, even jotting down love notes and doodles in your school notebooks.
once, you woke up and found your hearing aids were not on your bedside table. turning to jackie, who was peacefully sleeping next to you, you noticed them sitting on her bedside table instead. that's weird, you thought, not recalling leaving them there. as you picked them up, you realized jackie had adorned them with cute little stickers.
they’re very patient with you, never getting annoyed or frustrated when you ask them to say things again or speak more clearly for you to read their lips.
when watching a movie together, they always ensure the subtitles are on, so you don't have to strain to read everyone's lips all the time.
jackie has this habit of telling you that she loves you by tracing the letters "I L Y" in the palm of your hand with her index finger, giving you a soft kiss afterwards and fidgeting with your fingers.
lottie always keeps her arms protectively around you, whether it's draped over your shoulders or wrapped around your waist. when she wants to get your attention, she softly squeezes her hand around you.
when you're feeling stressed, she often soothes you by gently stroking your eyebrows with her fingers in a repetitive motion until you drift off to sleep.
they're frequently curious about your perspective and thoughts on certain things, recognizing that your experiences might differ from theirs. they often ask you how you imagine certain things would sound, sometimes out of genuine curiosity and other times playfully teasing you.
“who do you think has a sexier voice? and don’t lie just so that lotts doesn’t get upset,” jackie quipped as lottie rolled her eyes.
they're incredibly protective of you, never allowing anyone to mock or disrespect you in any way. not that anyone dares to, considering their popularity in school as members of the yellowjackets.
most of the time, you fall asleep by lying on top of either one of them, resting against their chest, or in any position that lets you lay your ear against their heart, so you can feel its steady beat.
they're constantly debating whose turn it is to cuddle you. so now, they take turns each night. while you lie on one's chest, the other cuddles you from behind, letting you feel her gentle heartbeat against your back.

Isn't Being A Wicked Woman Much Better? Side Story Chapter 16
i also upload this chapter in my YT, read there to support my effort, click here👉 Link
***
After that, the demon's resistance was quite intense, and there was an incident where the entire outer wall was damaged instead, but this side's power was so overwhelming that it was quickly subdued.
The demon was pierced by the spear of Orix, my exclusive escort knight, who had grown dramatically in the past, and was annihilated.
But I didn't feel the cool feeling inside.
It was because of the words the devil left before he died.
“Even if I disappear, the darkness does not disappear. No matter how many times you catch and kill black magicians, revenge only breeds revenge.”
Priest Maurice, who surrendered himself to an intermediate demon, turns out to be a priest who saved his life once thanks to Miya Binoshu in the past.
Denying the fact that his best friend, Miya, was the vessel for the Great Devil's Descent, he turned to black magic to prove that she was right and misunderstood.
'It's the blood of a high priest, so maybe an intermediate demon was summoned.'
Maybe it was because when Miya displayed the power of a demon disguised as healing power, that power was transferred to the priest.
‘The latter is more conjecture.'
“… The divine power returned before the thought body disappeared, didn't it?”
He watched from the side as I poured out my divine power to catch the thought-form that was about to disappear.
“yes.”
“What exactly was the cause of the divine power leak?”
“Rather than a leak, I think it’s more accurate to say that my subconscious was reluctant to use divine power and interfered with it.”
“.....”
“To be honest, I’m tired of being a saint.”
When the thought body was reminded of the existence of darkness, he realized the need for divine power and was soon able to use it.
However… It was not always easy to confront the evil and vicious demons.
“Deborah.”
“yes.”
“In the past, Princess-sama has lit a lot of candles.”
“.....”
“So, you don't have to burn yourself to light the darkness. Because there are so many people around Princess-sama like that.”
oh I see.
After putting off all my busy schedules for me and looking back at my people who followed me all the way to Hellia, suddenly something hot hit my heart.
No one was forcing me to be a hero, but I was carrying the burden on my own. That is why the divine power did not return.
When I decided not to think of a blue elephant, something similar to thinking about a blue elephant came up.
“I am stupid.”
“The real fool is over there.”
Isidor chuckled at Pope Rega and smiled like a party.
Isidor replaced all the healing stones I received from the Pope with healing stones that were empty of divine power. It will probably look like it's been used up for a purification ritual.
‘Advanced healing stone, eat well.'
A feeling of emptiness in the stomach, as if suddenly taking a digestive aid.
When he was feeling the feeling of fullness given by unearned income, his eyes met the Pope.
“Oh my gosh, saint!”
He approached me with a fuss, and the eyes of the priests and people around me were focused.
“How did you find and destroy a special evil that even holy water does not know to! My faith in St. Mary has grown stronger and deeper!”
"....."
he said fervently.
“At the upcoming monthly event, everyone will be informed about the saint’s activities, and the shrine will provide all support to the saint in addition to the finest healing stones!”
I quickly waved my hand and said what he wanted.
“You don't need to be rush. Since the Pope has given me the Healing Stone out of pure good will, I have only returned it with good intentions.”
“...yes.”
The pope responded with a little patience in his anger.
Still, it was good to try. It would have been right for Susie Goya to show her condolences in front of everyone who had already been robbed, and who had given her saint a healing stone.
“I am very grateful to the Pope.”
From expensive healing stones to relics made from dragon bones. There was no donation angel.
“… Thank you too. It is natural for the temple to spare no effort to support the saint. ”
“Really, I didn’t know you would support me so generously.”
I continued speaking with a smile as benevolent as possible.
“Thanks to the Pope personally visiting the capital and sharing the news about the relics, we are able to recover them before they are further damaged!”
“Huh?...”
At the word recall, he seemed to be at a loss for a moment, and I pressed once more.
“The holy relics will be purified with all my might in the future! Fortunately, the contamination didn't go away if I had it, the incarnation of the saint was in trouble, so no more worries!”
“It’s been a while since I’ve shown such a great divinity, until I dealt with the remnants of the temple and purify the holy things....”
“You are amazing! Saint!”
Isidor incited me by clearly listing my actions, and Oryx, the simplest, responded to the instigation and clapped with a huge hand.
clap clap!
In applause, I gazed intently at the priests next to the Pope.
“President Henri, High Priest Louis, and Priest Jacques. I will remember your generous help even when I return to the capital.”
The names of the high-ranking priests who participated in the mid-level demon investigation were known in advance through Isidor. There is no need to carry the entire temple and pretend.
“Sister remembers my name… !”
“Huh, hey, it’s an honor!”
“I, we will never forget the visit of Saint ”
When I personally called out their name, even the high-ranking priests of Hellia, who had been in a hurry, seemed to be visibly happy and shaken.
So, with the applause pop, my itinerary in Hellia came to an end.
***
“These white marbles were dragon fangs.”
I tinkered with the rosary and admired it.
The invincible material that can contain all kinds of power, including divine power, mana, and magic, is the dragon's bone.
'It even contained a strong thought-form.'
“Princess, where are you going to use that thing? Are you going to keep it like that?”
“yes. I plan to keep it.”
In the past, Isidor was displeased with me, who loved the rosary, even though it was an object he had carved himself.
'It's just that he treated himself as a black history in his previous life.'
“You can sell it to other countries at a very, very high price. I will process it properly so that no one notices that it is a holy relic brought from the temple.”
He reached out a hand of seduction, but I shook my head.
“I think there are probably people I want to give it to.”
At my words, Isidor's expression became more serious.
“What… . Hmm! Who are they?”
“Our babies.”
“!”
His face turned bright red like a ripe apple in an instant.
“Wh, why?”
“I thought I was going too far ahead, but when the princess said that, my heart raced… .”
Isidor murmured.
“How the hell have you gone so far? ? Did you make plans for your retirement in advance like I did?”
“I even thought about how to donate gifts to my great-grandchildren.”
“… I have gone very far.”
I overlooked the inheritance of wealth... . It is also unusual because it is not the blood of a dragon.
He looked at the rosary in my hand with a slightly reminded face, and after a while he spoke softly.
“… What we give to our children is unconditional approval.”
I swallowed my laughter as I listened to the shy voice and looked up at the branches with green shoots. One warm spring was coming.
5. May's Bride
“.....”
Early in the morning, Duke Seymour came out of the annex and gazed into the garden full of red roses.
In May, the garden becomes brighter day by day. Every time she went for a walk, the fresh scent of flowers filled her nostrils, just like when she was there.
- Georgesah.
Duke Seymour looked at the dewy red roses and recalled the vivid remnants of a dream last night.
Until now, even in my dreams, I didn't show you a single piece of clothing... The wife in my dream last night was so vivid. So much so that I can even feel the scent of lilac that she always carries.
My wife was wearing a white dress, holding the bouquet I had offered her in the past.
As far as the Duke can remember, he called his name in the form of the most daunting moment.
With a soft smile on his lips, he gently wrapped his arms around him. It was also lightly patted on the back of her hand. As if encouraging them that you are doing well.
Even though it was a dream, it felt kind and warm.
‘Did I have such a dream because it was May?'
Because the wife was the bride of May.
In the Empire, the most weddings took place in May. Not only because of the mild and warm weather, but also because there is a legend that the goddess in charge of fertility and fertility disappeared in winter and then resurrected in May.
'May is the most appropriate time for a wedding. '
Perhaps because of this tale, there was a superstition that a bride getting married in May would be happy, and the Duke also thought that May would be better if his daughter got married.
'By the way, I'm afraid I'll graduate early.'
My studies must have been completed, and after the preparations for the wedding that flowed like water, the wedding to the Duke of Visconti was already approaching.
'I feel more peaceful than I thought.'
I thought it would be very sad.
Lately, there have been times when I feel like my daughter is already married.
Hey, maybe it's because of Isidor, who comes to visit me like a son-in-law.
Isidor often came to the townhouse to teach Enrique's swordsmanship, even when Deborah wasn't there. He is a genius who can handle magic and sword at the same time, and in fact, Enrique did not have a good teacher.
“By the way, why is the youngest suddenly obsessed with swordsmanship… ?”
I was a little puzzled, but due to moderate exercise, the child's complexion was improving day by day, so I left it alone.
Inspection on Seymour.
In the past, I would have objected with a sense of rejection, but now that I see that it is not so, I wonder if I am old.
'Did Deborah say she was flexible?'
Duke Seymour looked at Enrique and Isidor wielding wooden swords in the backyard beyond the garden for a moment, then returned to his office to return to work.
Anyway, it's still too early for the youngest to do what he wants to do.
Target is 20 Likes and i will upload the next chapter.

realistic-ish percabeth uni au where
annabeth starts school a year ahead of percy so he has time to write (at least) the first pjato book. and get into school etc.
this makes their graduation years actually line up bc a b.arch is a 5 year degree
more on that in a bit though annabeth does not design olympus at 16/17
she probably drafts it but continues developing it through her introductory and intermediate studios
that would be years 1, 2, and the first term of 3. nru is probably on the quarter schedule but she probably only has 2 studios per year
her advanced studios (second half of 3, one or both of 4) are used to finalize olympus' plans and set some of them to action. if the 2nd studio in year 4 is still on olympus, it would be a design/build where she is there for actual construction
personally I think that she might spend the 2nd studio in year 4 getting ready for her thesis with preliminary plans
she probably spends a summer anyway working on these drafts. new rome inspires her a lot even though she is so in love with new york and would like to go back.
her 5th year thesis is new athens. it takes at least a year to configure basic city planning with camp halfblood (which is also designed with upgrades for halfblood longevity of life) as well as sample plans for housing and civil buildings. they aren't perfect bc each of these buildings really could have used a studio of their own, but they're a damn good place to start. her thesis defense is mostly just convincing the Olympians (now in a pretty good mood with her Olympus design) that they should invest in new athens with her anyway.
this lines up pretty well with percy's mission with the pjato books to educate young demigods for their own safety and to help them all grow old in a place with the infrastructure for it.
percy either continues writing or eventually becomes a teacher? or someone else majorly involved in the community. an organizer even.
they just make new athens and chb and nyc just a better home for halfbloods in general they build smth permanent ITS SO GOOD FOR THEIR ARCS

-You got the timeline of Lucy's death off by a year. She died at the end of Sophomore year. I wonder if the Grinders were trying to keep up with the Bad Kids by also bringing back a god from nameless oblivion.
-I have my own spin on why Ivy's not as good as Aelwynn. Ivy's a too realistically mean bitch, Aelwynn's a CRAZY bitch. One's way more entertaining than the other. Also Ivy's dollar store Garthy O'Brien accent is very off-putting. Stop sounding like a much cooler character, you high school hot girl cliche.
-Is Henry having Gorgug do all three Artificer years at once or one at a time? Cause one's a very logical way to go about it and the other's really not. You know, hyperfocus on finishing Freshman then Sophomore year and then play catch-up on the Junior year material. The smart way to do it. Or is Gorgug having to do Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced course material simultaneously? Cause that's a very dumb way to do it. Whichever way, Gorgug's nailing it, but that second one isn't sustainable.
-At first Fig's whole crisis about her lack of passion for being a Bard struck me as manufactured drama, but I've let it sink in and come to a different take on it. Fig's whole Rebel Punk Girl deal so far was obviously a reaction to the divorce and her life/family kinda falling apart. But now, things are REALLY great for her. Great family, great friends, great girlfriend. Her personal life is goals. So, how much is all that positive change affecting her? Is she over her Punk phase and moving on to something else? Season's not over, let's find out.
-Adaine's starting to use magic means and her connections to make money and I respect it.....BASRAR'S A GENIE! That just sank in right now as I'm typing this. But Brennan's no dummy. He probably set like a hard limit on the value of his wishes to close off that easy solution, but maybe he got sloppy and forgot to do that. Fingers crossed.
-I still don't think Fabian deserves Mazey after his behavior of late, but I'm still pretty into that ship, so whatever happens happens.
-Not much to say about Kristen and Riz. Especially Riz since he's been taking a narrative backseat so far this season. Hopefully that'll change soon. Still, Hi Riz, Hi Kristen :)
Holy shit, this one ran really long. My gift to you, I suppose.
Sorry this is late! Things are crazy! Luckily it's all still relevant. Let me go through point by point.
-You got the timeline of Lucy's death off by a year. She died at the end of Sophomore year. I wonder if the Grinders were trying to keep up with the Bad Kids by also bringing back a god from nameless oblivion.
If I said something other than that then it was a typo! I'll check and edit when I have a chance. But I think the point I was making was that it would make sense that the Rat Grinders never got more ambitious if Lucy had died the first week of school like Kristen and Gorgug. It makes less sense that they wouldn't ever leave the starting area with no dramatic incident to keep them skittish and that happened in Sophomore Year, not right away. And it def feels like they're copying the Bad Kids. The question is whether it's to just score some extra points or if there are also ulterior motives.
That's also an excellent point! The ideal bitch character is, to quote Heathers, a "mythic bitch". You want her so crazy she doesn't feel real. You want her doing full ass crimes. Ivy is just like, the run of the mill racist bitch you went to high school with. Too close to home. Not fun at all. The only thing it pings for me is disgust. And Garthy is WAY cooler than her. I hope the Bad Kids grind her into dust.
There is a split between D&D mechanics and actual in game reality sometimes and I really hope Brennan is just making Zac roll them simultaneously for mechanics reasons and in reality Gorgug is just taking all three years back to back to back and not simultaneously because it would be, as you said, and INSANE way to structure learning.
I'm kinda curious about where exactly the disconnect is for her because it's not like she needs to even be a musician to be a bard. There are so many different subclasses. Did she get into music just to let out her aggression and now that she doesn't feel so angsty, it's not flowing as well? Would she be feeling this way if she didn't have pressure to put out an album? It's not like she lost her creative spirit in a broad sense--who else but Fig could come up with Wanda Childa? But yeah, it'll be interesting to see where she lands, especially since she has this other stuff in her life going on too that needs to be resolved (curse stuff) and also she is literally the archdevil of rebellion currently which will be hard to pull off is she doesn't feel a connection to it. Which I honestly think she still does because if she didn't, the stuff with Cass wouldn't be working as well (the whole doubt/rebellion tag team and her successful prayer). Anyway, I just think she's in a transitional period. As you said, let's find out where this goes.
-Adaine's starting to use magic means and her connections to make money and I respect it…..BASRAR'S A GENIE! That just sank in right now as I'm typing this. But Brennan's no dummy. He probably set like a hard limit on the value of his wishes to close off that easy solution, but maybe he got sloppy and forgot to do that. Fingers crossed.
There is no way Brennan is gonna let them Basrar-Ex-Machina their way out of their problems without some truly insane rolls but, in character, it wouldn't be out of pocket to ask. Especially since she's the reason he can grant more than just ice cream wishes. But yeah, good on her for using her jacket as a side hustle and I really hope her charging for visions because you know those Falinel elves are sitting on piles of ancestral cash.
-I still don't think Fabian deserves Mazey after his behavior of late, but I'm still pretty into that ship, so whatever happens happens.
I'm not overly invested in Fabian's love life but it is really funny watching him flail so badly in this department even though he's objectively really cool according to the dice. If I was friends with Mazey though I'd be like, "Girl, are you sure?" Just a bit too much of the rich boy arrogance for my tastes.
-Not much to say about Kristen and Riz. Especially Riz since he's been taking a narrative backseat so far this season. Hopefully that'll change soon. Still, Hi Riz, Hi Kristen :)
Kristen is Going Through It and Riz has been great support so they deserve a bit of a break, especially because I feel like things are gonna pop off for them pretty quick.
OK, that's it! I have to lesson plan! I will hopefully have some time to so some recapping soon!

languages
note before starting: both my life and my career goals have been changing drastically lately, which means my language journey is about to change a lot too. however as i have yet to figure it out, i’m just gonna talk about how i’ve been studying languages for the last few months and update when i finally figure out my new language plan :)
having said that:

🌱 thai— beginner
🌱 korean— very beginner
🌱 italian— beginner
there’s a lot of languages i’d love to learn in the future (japanese, tagalog, swahili, vietnamese among others) but i’ve decided to focus and play around with these five languages until i reach my goals in all of them before starting any others
other socials

Baby Come Home // Charles/Daniel // 2.6K
tw: ableism towards a deaf character
Charles isn’t too sure when he first met Daniel, he has just always been there, like the shine in his maman’s eyes or the slight dip on the third step of the staircase leading upstairs. He can’t remember when he first noticed him, but he can remember the first time Daniel actually looked back at him and noticed him.
He was 6, staring up the stairs of their house as he watched Jules, Enzo, and Daniel bounce up to the top level, a frown on his lips. They thought they were so grown up, at their ripe age of 8. Maybe they were, Charles didn’t know. He was only 6. But, he desperately wanted to play with them and he signaled that with incessantly flashing the lights so Lorenzo would look at him so he could sign. Their mother was hunting down the new pack of batteries for Charles’ cochlear's and had been for the last hour.
“I want to play!” He signed to Enzo when he finally looked at him, rolling his eyes at Charles. “Please Enzo.”
Charles wasn’t that good at lip reading so when Daniel said something to him, he couldn’t quite understand, his face scrunching as he signed to Enzo.
“What?” He demanded, looking between both his brother and his cousin.
“Nothing, Charlie.” Jules signed back to him, before he turned to Daniel and gestured, presumably explaining that Charles was Deaf and couldn’t hear anything without his processors on. He also gestured to Enzo, pointing to his hearing aid on his left ear, probably explaining that all of them were on the deafness spectrum as best as an 8 year old could.
Daniel nodded, his head quirked to the side as he waved at Charles before turning to talk to Jules and Lorenzo.
“Daniel said he wants to play with you.” Jules automatically translated for him. Charles grinned and went to see if his Maman had found the batteries so he could actually talk to Daniel without missing every other word from his lips. He was trying hard to learn how to lip read in school but it was very hard and most of his family was at least to an intermediate level of ASL or LSF, so he didn’t have to use it at home.
Charles flickered the lights when he walked in the room, causing his Maman to look up as he signed “Did you find them?”
His maman gestured to the counter where his processors were laying on the counter, signing back that she had. He waited for her to help him put them back on him, smiling as they turned on and he could hear the world around him again.
He ran off to find Daniel to show him that his ears worked again. Kinda. Jules told him that his hearing ear and his Cochlear sounded a little different but Charles knew no difference, having always only heard through his devices.
-
The first time Charles really realized just how much Daniel meant to him, he was 14.
He was sitting at the lunch table with Enzo, Jules, and Daniel, fiddling with his processors. The noise in high school was a lot, even two weeks into the transition from his Deaf focused middle school into mainstream high school. His English skills were advanced, he could speak well, and he had no problems with focusing in a normal classroom, but the cafeteria was a different story. Thousands of voices and sounds came crashing over him all at the same time and he wasn’t used to it.
“Charles.” Enzo scolded when he saw him playing with the device. “Don’t break it again. Just take them off for the moment if you’re really that bothered.” Charles rolled his eyes at him but detached the magnets, making everything go silent around them as he looked at all of them. Charles started eating his lunch, chatting with Enzo and Jules as Daniel vocally spoke to them. They both took turns interpreting for him, but Daniel had spent years with them all. His own hands reflexively clumsily signing the main points of what he was saying, just fragments of what he was talking about, half formed but still clear enough for Charles to understand whatever he was wishing to express to all of them. Charles could lip read well, but he appreciated not having to focus on mouths.
Charles was struck by how fond he was of Daniel. He was hearing, raised in a hearing household, but he still tried for all of them in their native language, picking up their language and using it to communicate with them, especially Charles who relied a little more heavily on sign as he was born with profound Deafness, while Jules and Enzo were both only fully effected in one ear.
It struck him with a sudden quickness, how much he liked Daniel.
“Daniel.” He signed “You need to learn how to sign with both hands, you look like you’re speaking only halfway.” He giggled at the look on his face, smiling at the older boy as he picked at his school issued tater tots.
Daniel waved to get Charles’ attention once again and used both hands to sign to him.
“Enrolled. Class. Learn.” He said, and Charles nodded.
“Good. Because you can understand well but your signing is…not so good. Sorry.” Jules and Lorenzo both nodded their agreement, Jules turning slightly to speak to him.
“Charles is just picky. He grew up spoiled with everyone knowing sign so he never had to suffer through the well wishers who thought they were fluent. At least you try, but he is right. You really do suck at ASL.” Daniel gasped in mock offense, causing Charles to laugh again, flushing when people looked at him. He assumed he was being loud, but nobody at his table turned to shush him, so he just continued.
He nudged Jules, signing “You’re just jealous that Maman and Uncle said that I sign LSF better than you.”
Jules shook his head before saying “Bell.” and gesturing up to indicate to Charles that lunch time was over. He made sure to connect his transmitters again, cringing slightly at the cascade of sound as he gathered his things to dump them.
He felt a nudge and looked up to see Daniel, replying vocally when he asked “Ear?”
“Yes, I always put them back in after lunch, Though, I wish I could get away with not. Mr. Pross always breathes so loud into my microphone and has it pressed way too close to his mouth.” He shutters, and Daniel cackles. They had the same math class, so they walked together, pushing through the crowded halls.
Charles felt so cool walking with Daniel who was extraordinarily more popular than him. He smiled at Daniel as he cracked jokes, trying to only focus on his voice when someone bumped into him, slightly hard, jostling the hand Charles had reached up to push his magnet under his hair, causing his device to fall on the ground.
The culprit didn’t even stop to apologize as Charles bent down to pick his transmitter, trying to see if it was broken from the person stepping on it. He prayed it wasn’t, his parents had just bought him new racing red ones that he knew were not cheap. But, when he picked it up, he saw that the magnet was now detached and he frowned even harder.
“Hey!” Daniel called down the hallway, walking after the person who had jostled Charles. “Hey, you!” He caught up to them. It was that guy who had been taunting Charles, the guy from his Advanced French class that had asked why he was there if he was “SPED”.
“I’m just Deaf?” Charles replied in confusion.
“Wow! I didn’t know you knew how to speak.” was all he said, causing Charles to wrinkle his nose and look away.
“Why didn’t you apologize to him for bumping into him?” He demanded, glaring the boy down.
“Daniel.” He signed “It’s fine!”
“No, it isn’t, Charlie.” Daniel replied. He turned back to the boy, who had introduced himself as Zach on their first day if Charles could recall correctly.
“Danny, c’mon.” Zach chidded “He obviously said it’s okay.” He mocked Charles signing, and Charles flushed, embarrassed that this was happening in front of Daniel.
“Don’t mock him. Just because you barely know more than English doesn’t mean you get to mock him. You broke his fucking device. Imagine someone just walking over your precious phone. Say sorry.” Daniel snarled. Charles grabbed his wrist, shaking his head.
“Who cares? I’m sure he can make some sob story and get it covered.” Daniel shook off Charles’ hand and snatched Zach’s phone, chucking it over the railing of the level they were standing on, watching it clatter and shatter on the laminate floor below them.
“Let’s go.” Was all Daniel had to say, letting go of Zach and steering Charles away to their math class, leaving everyone there to gawk at them.
Charles’ parents were furious when they heard what happened, Daniel got suspended for 2 days, and Charles was pretty sure he was in love with Daniel when it was all said and done.
-
Charles took off his transmitters at 19. He was sick of the world demanding him to conform to their expectations of him. Demanding him to mold himself into a hearing person when he was not. He was Deaf.
“I understand.” His maman signed to him when he told her he was doing it. “It’s hard in this world. Your papa and I just wanted to give you the best accessibility that we could, but it has always been your choice. When you were about 3, you refused to wear them out for months and all our hearing friends would ask why we would let you do that. As if denying you the ability to be comfortable is the better choice. You can put them back whenever you want. If you want.” She kissed his forehead as he leaned against her, closing his eyes.
When he told Daniel, signing to him over FaceTime so the other man could practice his interpretation skills with him, he nodded.
“Good. You always seemed so uncomfortable with them on.” Charles beamed at him. Daniel always got him, above anyone else. He understood Charles more than anyone else in his life. He got all of Charles’ weird idiosyncrasies and appreciated them with so much reverence, it made Charles’ heart nearly beat out of his chest.
Charles was so in love with him, it made him almost feel sick with how struck he was by the other man.
“How are your classes?” He signed to Charles, capturing his attention again.
“So exhausting! You do not understand how tired I am of having to explain why I have my interpreter there and that she’s allowed everywhere I am. Soooo many people demanding to know why I don’t have hearing aids! Do they not understand the concept of being Deaf?” Charles rolled his eyes as he dramatically signed, exasperated.
He loved being Deaf, he was extremely proud to have grown up in a Deaf family, surrounded by not only his Monegasque culture, but also his Deaf culture, but it was not easy being Deaf in a world that was built for hearing people. Especially when people saw being Deaf as some sort of shortcoming, expecting him to do whatever to make them more comfortable with his Deafness, even if it meant sacrificing his own comfort and happiness. Charles was so tired of it, he spent years wearing his transmitters and dealing with how much he hated it just to fit in. He was sick of it.
He wanted to be comfortable and happy, he was born without his hearing and he liked it that way.
“I’m sorry, cherry.” Daniel shook his head, before turning his head to look at someone off cam. Charles couldn’t read his lips to even get an idea of what he was saying, annoyed that someone else was trying to take Daniel’s attention.
Daniel signaled the other person away and turned back to Charles, saying “Sorry, my roommate was wondering who I was talking to. He wants to go out to a party tonight.”
Charles pointed to his lips, raising his eyebrows as Daniel laughed and translated himself to Charles, causing the other to giggle.
“Are you going to go?” He asked, a bit sad but trying to keep it under wraps. The downside to being Deaf was that he was so used to keeping open and candid body language that it was hard to hide, even when he schooled his face.
“If you don’t want me to, I won’t. I wanna talk to you and we haven’t really spoken much since you started class.” Daniel expressed to him,
Charles frowned, shaking his head, trying to emphasize as he said “No, you should! I don’t want to keep you from having fun.” Even though all he wanted to do was talk to Daniel. More than anything.
Daniel signed “Love you.” which caused Charles to smile, his eyes wrinkling and his dimples popping out as he signed it back and hung up, sighing softly as he looked at himself in his phone’s reflection. He felt pathetic with how much he adored Daniel.
-
Charles was 20 when he got scouted by AR Models. He was 20 when his whole world changed. He was also 20 when he completely went publicly non-verbal, refusing to use his voice when he had his sign and anyone who was actually worth his time allowed him to use his interpreter.
When he told Daniel, FaceTiming him in excitement, too excited to even use the minimal words he usually did use with the other man, instead rapidly signing to him in LFS, which Daniel was hardly intermediate in.
“Charles!” Daniel signed back. “I do not know what you are saying, I don’t know LSF that well, darling.” Charles blushed, laughing a little as he simply spoke out loud to him.
Charles rarely ever spoke in public, but he would happily use his voice with Daniel, even if his volume control was hard to gauge.
“I got signed. I got signed to a modeling agency. I-” he went back to sign, English was too hard for him to express himself when he was this excited. “I got signed to be a model, Daniel. With a real fucking agency.”
The way Daniel’s face dropped made Charles’ heart ache in a way he never knew it could, the feeling nearly choking him out.
“That’s really good, cherry.” Was all he signed back and Charles was confused. Not only by how sad Daniel’s body language seemed, but by the way he wasn’t even smiling at Charles, his dark eyes looking conflicted as Charles watched him.
“I-are you not happy about it?” Charles asked, and Daniel only bit his lip, looking like he was about to sigh, but Charles couldn’t tell, he could never really tell through the phone. He cocked his head as he stared at Daniel on screen and he sighed as well, feeling the slight vibration in his throat.
Charles propped his phone on a window seal, too excited to tell Daniel about his new contract that he hadn’t even left the agency building before calling him. He stared at Daniel before going to talk, the other man obviously not going to respond to him.
“I don’t know what is wrong, but I wish you would tell me. I don’t even know-This is a dream come true for me, you know this. So I am confused why you look like a kicked dog.” Daniel frowned, his eyebrows furrowing but Charles was on a roll, already ranting, his signing getting more and more mixed up between ASL and LSF. He could not understand why Daniel wouldn’t be happy for him.
“Charles.” Daniel signed. “I am so happy for you. That’s all. I’m happy for you.” and then he hung up and Charles was left in the lobby of his new agency, phone disconnected and tears in his eyes.
-
Charles was 24 and drunk when he saw Daniel for the first time in 3 years. In some gay bar in New York City of all places, kissing another guy. Charles didn’t know his heart could break all over again, but here it was, shards in his hands in the middle of a neon lit dance bar.
Daniel looked up and spotted him, and then looked away. Charles wanted to fucking throw up all the espresso martinis he had just drank, and he turned away, smiling at the guy he was with. Who cared what Daniel thought anyway?
Charles wished he didn’t.

craft essay a day #1
(since i'm embarking on putting together a proposal for a craft book, i thought i'd read [or re-read] some some of the two dozen or so craft books on my shelf. and since i've gotten a lot of interest in craft book/essay recs i thought i'd summarize them here. will i manage to do this every day? who knows. but an attempt will be made.)
"Beginnings" by Ann Hood, The Writer's Notebook II: Craft Essays from Tin House
beginner | intermediate | advanced | masterclass
filed under: structure, conflict, prose, process
summary
Hood begins the essay by talking about process, namely that she has to know her first sentence before she can start writing a novel, but that once the novel is finished, the beginning changes anyway.
"Yet, after I've finished a story and started the revision process, I almost always find myself right back at the beginning, reworking it again. While I was writing, characters changed, new ideas intruded, mistakes in the original plan revealed themselves, and sometimes a different story altogether has taken over. In his book The Triggering Town, the poet Richard Hugo says there are actually two beginnings: the one that comes from your initiating or triggering subject and the one that is generated as you write and discover your real subject. Your challenge is to let go of your triggering beginning and find your real one."
she then goes on to analyze a few dozen beginning sentences of famous novels and place them into 10 categories:
Introduction
An Old Saw
Character Description
A Setting
In Media Res
Facts
A Truism or Philosophical Idea
Dialogue
Overture
Otherworld
my thoughts
good essay for an intro cw course/workshop (i always love essays that break things down into categories).
i am in desperate need to find this exact essay but for ending sentences, yet i suspect it doesn't exist because no one is good at endings. still, the search continues. surely someone somewhere has attempted it.
made me think of my own beginning sentences in a new way and how i have a hard time letting go of my "triggering subject" beginnings.
would have liked to see a little more sentence-level analysis, really dig into the meat of why these sentences work (rhetorically, structurally, narratively), not just what kind of sentences they are. but that's probably a different essay. i've read a lot of tin house essays and they tend to stick to surface-level thoughts on craft. nothing mind-blowing, but great for teaching/referencing because they define craft concepts in memorable ways.
(additional note: i did the tin house workshop five years ago. great experience! highly recommended.)

It was difficult to choose just a few, but 💍🖊️🎻🎶🍝🍰
so many!!! thank you kindly... I'll go for Vinnie again
💍 RING — does your oc have any piercings? do they want any (more) piercings?
I think she'd have ear piercings but I haven't thought of what to give her... maybe something like this? but thinner like spiderweb strands and hmm she could also incorporate them into her formal hairpiece
🖊️ BALLPOINT PEN — does your oc have any tattoos? do they want any (more) tattoos?
none so far... I'm thinking if tattoos are fashionable for women in Menzoberranzan which would affect what she thinks of this idea because she likes to see herself as a fashionable and proper lady. something she'd get would have significance to Lolth and herself
🎻 VIOLIN — does your oc play any instruments? what is their skill level (beginner/intermediate/advanced/virtuoso/etc)?
okay at something like an eight course lute. I imagined her learning this as a student and picking it up again later... when she's lounging with Tsabrak he likes to listen to her play, even if she's just okay at it
🎶 MUSICAL NOTES — what type of music does your oc like? do they listen to music very often?
I've been listening to a lot of music of this type recently, but I think she'd enjoy medieval style vocal music like this... the lyrics on it are neat to her in context but the group and similar artists have work I could imagine being sung at Arach-Tinilith. does Lolth like music? probably. Vinnie is somewhat of an enigma, she did try to learn an instrument and was passionate about it for a while but the interest dropped off. she likes to whistle on the occasion and does so well...
🍝 SPAGHETTI — what is/are your oc's favorite food(s)?
some Menzoberranzan counterpart of wiener schnitzel, rothé meat cut in thin strips and breaded, you know. she loves all sorts of meat and will try anything once, but it has to be made up to her standard
🍰 SHORTCAKE — what is/are your oc's favorite sweet(s)/dessert(s)?
I'm haunted by syrup bath lore but what if a cake had a syrup bath wouldn't that be less cursed. they got hurmašice down under from somewhere and Vinnie loves them. she likes shortbread in general

The kind of Sad i’m feeling over Laudna gone is so strange. So upsetting.
Like, i know she’s probably coming back, within 1 or 2 episodes. I know this isn’t the end of her story. Is just, the particular circumstances of her death are so heavy and bleak.
Laudna was (is) a deeply tragic character that is portrayed as “cool with what happened” in a very interesting way. Walking the fine line between being shaped by her trauma, but moving forward in spite of it. But people forget that her trauma is massive... like impossibly massive, and then, this happens
She’s killed as a message for someone else, as a dare, as a device to impact the main person(s)... again. It wasn’t strictly a sacrifice or directly her choice (she stayed so a part was her choice, but not all of it). She’s killed by a powerful woman that didn’t even knew her name, she’s just a sacrifice device to advance the story of important people... again
And even now that she has friends and people around her, for the first time in her life, the hope that she may get resurrected back intermediately... Is not enough
She’s not a priority, she seemed fine with being dead, so yeah, others get the chance first right? It's just logical
This thought of “She has gone through worse, just add this to the pile” is just... god, so bleak, and it makes me so sad for so many reasons. I’m actually struggling putting it into words.
Because someone has gone through the worst that the world has to offer, should people just understand how “strong” and “used to it” are, and make them the shield for pain? Why don't give them a break? give them respite, love, help. They’re not going to ask for it, for so many reasons, but if you can catch those cracks, those small glimpses of vulnerability, they deserve a check in, they deserve help.
Just give her a break.

That’s an excellent question, but not one that can easily be answered. There are really two versions of DQ7. The PSX and 3DS versions. And there are reasons to play either.
Some brief differences would be.
PSX: 2D sprites in 3D environments, random encounters, longer time spent in Estard
3DS: All 3D models, overworld enemies, shorter time spent in Estard
The biggest change imo is how different the vocation system is between the two. In the original you would choose a vocation to get its skills and then change vocations so your skills would carry over and if you change to a specific vocation when the last one “matured” you could get really good hybrid skills (like Sword Dance, the must-have hybrid skill). You basically plan out your vocation path so you get the master vocation you want for each character and pick up good hybrid skills along the way. In the 3DS remake, only skills from beginner and monster vocations carry over, but intermediate and advanced vocations will quickly learn skills from the vocations needed to unlock them. But this means that in the PSX version, Champions can use Sage skills if your Champion went through the Sage vocation at some point, but 3DS Sages can’t (unless they go through a monster vocation that has those skills).
I like the PSX version because I think hybrid skills makes planning a specific progression of vocations more interesting, but there are people that swear by the 3DS vocation system since it matters a lot less what order you choose to master vocations.
I also mentioned the time you spend in Estard is different and that’s because the PSX version has a notoriously long prologue. It will probably take a couple hours before you even get to your first battle. This is a major turn-off to many. The 3DS remake sought to remedy this by removing an entire dungeon from the prologue since it was entirely puzzle-oriented with no battles. I both like and dislike this change because I do think it messes with DQ7’s setup, but it also makes it easier to recommend to people who don’t want to go through the entire prologue.
The 3DS version also has an entirely reworked script and even changes some names (most notably the character Gabo is renamed Ruff). I would say the 3DS script is generally better, but the PSX one was also noticeably edgier. This worked in Maribel’s favor since she’s a character with a really sharp tongue. It helps with how down-to-earth the characters in 7 feel when compared to the characters in a lot of other DQs.
Also, regardless of which version you play, don’t use the stat-boosting seeds until you unlock vocations. You could do this earlier, but if I told you the exact moment you can start using them it would spoil a big moment in the game. Also keep in mind that even when you get to the point you unlock vocations, there will still be two other party members you’ll get later.
Also be sure to really research how vocations work when you unlock them. In both versions you’ll have to see what the requirements are to unlock each advanced vocation so you know which routes to go down with your characters, but for the PSX version you’ll also have to look up the hybrid skills and factor in those (you should at least have any character in the Dancer vocation briefly switch to the Warrior vocation and any character in the Warrior vocation briefly switch to the Dancer vocation to learn Sword Dance whenever possible).

🎻 💯 🌴 🖤 for Carrie!
(for this)
🎻 (does your oc play any instruments? what is their skill level (beginner/intermediate/advanced/virtuoso/etc)?) - carrie has always taken more of an interest in dancing or listening than playing, but when she was younger she did take flute lessons. she later inherited her parent's flute on their passing (..to the tomb colonies), but she's never touched it since...
💯 (share three random facts about your oc that others may not know.) -
with the vake-steed, she regularly hunts zee-beasts, something which has given it a distinctly more peligin appearance. to her, these secretive hunts are a standard (but very much sacramental) thing to refresh her blood, heart, spirit, eyes, etc., and something it'd be a horrendous snub to not include her hunter-bat-thing in, given the pair's connection; to the former veils, this has been an inferior replacement for its own hunts, and probably some kind of betrayal of the spirit of their.. agreement? contract? binding?
her anger against laws of nature and the nature of permanent death doesn't mean she's against all kinds of killing - carrie often (comparatively often. not regularly) temporarily-kills others, sometimes (many times...) with lasting consequences for those killed. it's more or less a time-out for them, and if there's some accidental maiming, well, that's life. but of course perma-death is unacceptable
despite her hedonism, she's in some ways kind of boring as a person... almost 'no fun allowed', looks down on immaturity. not something i've properly shown so it counts for this in a meta way
🌴 (does your oc have a green thumb? do they enjoy gardening?) - if she grew anything other than mushrooms and occasional gifted hell-plants, she'd probably end up accidentally killing them, even ignoring being in a cave.. so it's a good thing she has no plans to try and import any surface plants. but also her still-living hell-plants (those which haven't been repossessed) are in a constant state of slight suffering
🖤 (has your oc killed or seriously wounded anyone before? have they broken someone's heart and/or broken someone's trust?) - she has certainly broken hearts and trust... having been an occasional homewrecker.... and she's damaged some promises in her life. but aside from that...
i guess the above point - about not perma-killing people - kind of answers this one? she's wounded quite a few enemies, acquaintances, and friends... there's been some, very few, who she's seriously injured and left to die. and, of course, some of those couldn't survive even a single death. most are sources of guilt, others she doesn't acknowledge ever happened. not a precise answer at all but this is me putting a pin in this to write more about later haha

Language Learning Check-In: June
Assuming I keep up with this I guess I'll make this a monthly thing. I've loved languages for a long time, but this was the first time in a while where I felt like it was my main hobby. I'm currently very into the idea of 'comprehensible input' which is where things are simplified enough and with enough context that you can understand what's going on, even if you can't understand most of the words, and you naturally start picking up both grammar and vocabulary from exposure. I finally quit Duolingo cold turkey.
Thai: I started seriously studying Thai at the end of last month, starting with learning the alphabet and then immediately abandoning that to do pure listening comprehension only. I've been averaging 2hrs a day, a pace I can probably stick to for the next two months since I can watch videos during work, but not after that. This is not counting time spent watching BL since in that case I'm focusing mainly on reading subtitles, although I'm sure it helps a little. The videos I'm watching have the format of two teachers asking each other basic questions ('Is this a fruit? Do you like to eat this?') with lots of repetition, hand gestures, and doodles to illustrate.
I feel like I've been learning so much but all I can quantify is the hours spent since it's not like I'm making vocab lists or taking tests, I'm just absorbing like a sponge. My favorite part is that it's pretty chill to be a sponge so it's still possible when I'm tired, and until this past week or so I was struggling a lot with my energy levels. I don't really have any fun language facts to share other than that sky blue is its own distinct color category, there's no overall blue in Thai.
Spanish: I'm actually part of an insanely multilingual friend group now and there are a lot of Spanish speakers. This includes the friend I've been calling 'Kdrama Friend' who is actually a Spaniard, although her mother tongue is Catalan, not Castilian. Then there's my Guatemalan neighbor of the Mysterious Doormat Beverage (left on my doormat, not consisting of doormats), and a few other women. Kdrama Friend can translate (and so can some of the others, they mostly speak more English than I speak Spanish) but it's a lot less awkward when she doesn't have to. I do struggle to follow group conversations a lot of times though, so I've been meaning to seriously work on my conversational skills and now I've actually started.
It's easier than with Thai in the sense that I don't have to have visual input, I can understand intermediate to advanced podcasts like the Duolingo podcast and even native podcasts, but it's harder in the sense that I don't feel any progress since my level was already pretty high and I'm just picking up the occasional new word. We'll see how I do at tomorrow's baby shower. To be honest I think a lot of my problems with conversation are more psychological than linguistic and exist even when I'm speaking English, I can just cope better then.
I found a podcast on fashion history which I was able to follow because I'm actually really interested in that. It's the whole comprehensible input thing, I know perfectly well what a toile is and have used them, but someone at my Spanish level who didn't know how to sew clothes might have been lost.
Working on Spanish doesn't feel that exciting but it's useful and important to me for heritage reasons. If you've ever read the Josefina American Girl books, that's exactly one side of my family and my grandma grew up speaking Spanish, but my dad's Spanish is almost nonexistent and I just learned in school.
Vietnamese: You all know I love this language and I've wanted to learn it for a while, but there aren't great resources for it and while I can absolutely pick up certain words and phrases, it still kind of...doesn't sound like a language a lot of the time. Thai already feels more understandable. I think the alphabet similarity is actually hurting me because if I look at a word the way it would sound with English pronunciation interferes too much, and there aren't any videos simple enough to feel comprehensible without any translation. So this is on the back burner.
Korean: Dropped for now, although I did find some comprehensible input videos in case I decide to try learning it later.
My problem is that I now want to learn all the languages, right now, and that is not how it works. Anyway, feel free to ask me about languages any time.

Alright this is the last one I promise 😂
For your OC Jessica Campbell could you answer these questions please.
☕️ ❤️ 🐶 📚 💔🎻 💯 🤍 (I’m sorry there are so many 😂)
YES I ABSOLUTELY CAN. LET'S GO JESS CAMPBELL AN ICON FOR THE AGES!!!!!!!
☕️ HOT BEVERAGE  does your oc prefer coffee, tea, hot chocolate, milk, water, or some other drink? how do they like to take this drink (ex. coffee with milk, hot chocolate with whipped cream, a specific kind of tea, etc)?
she's definitely a tea drinker!! but she also enjoys a hot chocolate
❤️ RED HEART — what are three of your oc’s positive traits?
she is absolutely the friend you want by yourself when you're going through something. she is steadfast in her support for her friends and family, and not just backing them no matter what, but also calling them out on their actions when needed. she'll 100% be there for you with love and compassion, even when she's kicking you up the arse to do and be better
she has a lot of love to give and doesn't try to hide behind walls or push people away, she wants the people she loves to know and feel her affections toward them
she never judges you. she'll keep your secrets and defend you, even when it's going against societal norms and expectations
🐶 DOG FACE — does your oc have any pets?
yesss! so as you know her family own a vet practice (that's basically attached to her family home due to the nature of the profession at the time being in quite a transformative phase) and so there was always animals in and out of her house, but they also have two family spaniels as well *wink wink nudge nudge*. she doesn't own a horse herself, but she does help out at the local stables, due to her parents work there, and is pretty bonded with one of their horses!
📚 BOOKS — what level of education has your oc most recently completed/is currently in (GED, undergraduate, grad school, phd, etc)?
she originally planned to fully train in animal care under her parents, but then the war broke out and she realised that she wanted to train as a nurse to help with the war effort, so her plans changed
💔 BROKEN HEART — what are three of your oc’s negative traits?
whilst she's very upfront and honest about her opinions with her friends, she can sometimes find it hard to express her feelings to people she's romantically interested in, at first at least. this isn't negative really, not imo, but it's something she views as wanting to be better at doing. especially with eugene heading off to war before she's even finished training as a nurse
sometimes she'll let josie run away with her, often well intentioned, but not so well executed, ideas, even though she knows it's probably gonna cause trouble for them all, rather than trying to stop it happening, because it's sometimes easier to let josie see for herself rather than trying to convince her because she knows josie can be difficult to deal with sometimes
she sometimes struggles when she can't solve something with kindness or help, and doesn't like having to accept that sometimes there's nothing that can be done to prevent something happening or that she just has to be with someone through their struggles, rather than coming up with a solution to help their situation
🎻 VIOLIN — does your oc play any instruments? what is their skill level (beginner/intermediate/advanced/virtuoso/etc)?
she plays a little piano. her and julian had joint lessons when they were kids together, but when julian moved away, she lost interest bc they promised to always learn together. she still plays occasionally though, and deep down, she misses it. julian encourages her to keep playing and maybe one day she'll pick it back up properly again
💯 HUNDRED POINTS SYMBOL — share three random facts about your oc that others may not know.
she has a great sense of humour
doesn't mind getting her hands dirty when it comes to working with animals and at the stables etc
she's very good at playing cards. in fact, the three j's have been known to hustle a few unsuspecting americans out of their cash because they never expect her skills to be as good as they are
🤍 WHITE HEART — what are three of your oc’s neutral/questionable traits?
uncertainty in other's feelings toward her
second-guessing herself even though she believes in her skills and abilities
thinking she's somehow not good enough for eugene (she 100% is!!!!), and thus, hiding her feelings from him
for this oc ask game!

Interest in the Culture
Tumblr media
One factor that can determine how quickly a learner progresses in a language, or even whether or not he or she will ultimately succeed in mastering it, is the interest he or she has in the culture related to it. That is, if a learner of Chinese is interested in Chinese culture, a learner of Korean is interested in Korean culture, and so on. Beyond study techniques, beyond personal aptitude, I believe that the degree of this kind of interest in a student can be the key to his or her progress.
When I was in high school, my school divided my generation into an “advanced” English class and a “basic” English class. I had friends in both groups, and when I think about the difference between them, between the friends who could speak English and those who struggled with it painfully, I find the reason. The friends who struggled with it lived immersed in Mexican culture and those who could speak English tended to be fans of Anglo bands, watch Hollywood movies and series with subtitles, had an important contact with Anglo culture. For them, learning English was a pleasant consequence of spending time with objects they liked. For the former, on the contrary, English was always a struggle and a torture.
This has to do, of course, with the theory of comprehensible input, that progress in a language comes from reading and listening, the reception of content. Interest in a foreign culture is an obvious determinant of how much time someone will spend with the objects of that world, how intensely they will surround themselves with them, until they build up an artificial immersion (to differentiate it from traditional immersion: traveling to the target country). And it works the other way around, when someone decides to (or is forced to) learn a language, but has little or zero interest in the culture of that language, we can bet that their learning process is going to be slow, arduous, and probably destined to fail.
Even in intermediate-advanced learners, lack of interest in the culture is going to hold them back at some point. They may lack certain turns of phrase, idiomatic expressions, slang, intonation, and the rhythm with which a language should be spoken. Probably the degree of interest is going to predict how close to native-like their pronunciation can be. Pronouncing well, speaking a foreign language well, is something that requires acting skills. When we speak another language, we are others, in a sense, and that performance will depend on our knowledge and love for that culture, to what extent we are willing to venture into it, to imitate it. To sound almost native you need to be almost native.
One can see how cultures like Anglo or French, with a high international prestige (we are not going to discuss Eurocentrism here!), often get students who fine tune every last detail, who try to sound as much like the natives, to use the same words, the same sayings, who are really striving to be part of that other culture that interests them so much and that surrounds them and runs through them.
If you are really interested in the culture of a language or, better yet, if that is the reason why you are learning the language, you don’t need much advice, chances are that your interest, your approach to the objects, the people, the manifestations of the language, will sooner or later lead to fluency. But if the opposite happens to you, if you are learning a language for other reasons, for work or necessity (it’s valid!), perhaps it would be a good idea to try to get to know the culture, to try to find something admirable, interesting, exciting in it. There is no culture that isn’t. This will make your learning process easier and more enjoyable, and the target culture will become part of your life: an intense adventure.
