About the sword "Yamato no Kami Hidekuni"

(1) What is the Aizu clan swordsmith "Hidekukuni" after "Kanesada"?

Swordsman Hidekuni, like the 11th generation Kanesada, was famous as a Aizu swordsmith. The sword used by Toshizo was made by Hidekuni, who was pursuing Shohei according to Matsudaira, himself. Kondo also sent three swords of the same name at the same time, giving one of them to Hikogoro and another to Gensaburo Inoue (collected by the Gensaburo Inoue Museum).

(2) "Yamato Morigen Gen Hidekuni" used in the Boshin War

Tonosuke Akizuki is an Aizu feudal lord who joined a training squad led by Keisuke Otori during the Boshin War. When marching into Utsunomiya, he set Hijikata as a staffer and became a commander himself, leading the spearhead. It is said that Toshizo respected him for his high hopes. The inscription shows that Toshizo gave a sword to Akizuki.

Another beloved sword of Toshizo Hijikata, which will be open to the public at the Reizan Historical Museum in Kyoto from April 2016, is "Yamato Morigen Hidekuni". Tokuzo owned the "Hidekoku Yamato", which has a plum design that he liked Hijikata for the framing. There are traces of pearls peeled off on some of the sheaths, and some parts of Koiguchi have become worn and light in color.
