Four months have passed since the Battle of Hogwarts that put an end to the reign of dark magic in England. The Daily Prophet has slowed reports of everyone’s favourite war heroes, the castle has been rebuilt, and the Golden Trio is slowly moving forward with their lives. Ron is off to America for training, Harry is finding happiness wherever he can, and Hermione eagerly returns to Hogwarts to prepare for her NEWTS. As an independent learner she is afforded a lot of freedom, but after questionable choices at a birthday party she finds herself learning to live side by side with the last person she expected, Severus Snape.

Walking to the Headmistresses office Hermione tried to take deep breaths. She used the grounding exercises her therapist has taught her. What could she touch. What could she see. What could she smell. It hardly helped; she was grounded, the ground was just exceptionally shaky these days.

This isn’t the direction she’d expected her life would go. She intended to travel and further her education, she imagined she would meet someone and go on dates and take things slowly and fall in love. Growing up she always assumed that one day when she was older, much older, she would have a child. So much had changed since Harry dropped her off at Platform 9 3/4 on September first.

She was ashamed to admit, but lately she’d almost been glad her parents weren’t here to see her make a mess of her life. On the other hand... she tried not to think about the support she could use. It was useless. She could do this alone. Countless people had, and she had Harry and the Weasleys for support. Hopefully.

This meeting was an inevitability. It had been put off longer than was wise and if she was going to move forward she needed to talk to Minerva. Everything would work out in the end. Taking one last look down the halls she gave the the golden eagle statue the password. Minerva would understand why she made this choice, she had to.

“I would not ask this unless I was sure there was minimal risk of harm! The in vitro experiments with her blood samples demonstrate full resistance to mutation under the assault of scores of subatomic particles—”

“And in vitro experiments are not the same as you are well aware! Theory and practice—”

“—and time. Time is what we should be focusing on—”

“Time? For me, it’s a finite resource, and you’re not the only one with an agenda reliant on my skill set.”

“Is that a threat?”

“Merely an observation.”
