Replacing a single lever shower faucet

If a shower faucet starts to drip or leak even though it's closed, it may be cracked or broken. It may be time to replace it. When buying a new shower faucet, make sure it has the exact same dimensions to fit the valve. Also consider the type of shower faucet you currently have installed. If it has only one handle and dispenses both cold and hot water depending on how you turn it, it is a single-lever shower faucet.

There are many different types of single lever faucets, but regardless of their minor differences, they all work the same. Below are the general steps to replace this type of shower faucet.

Turn off the water source

Locate the water heater and turn off the valves to shut off the water flowing into the faucet. Also turn off the water at the main water line where it flows into the house. Turn the shower faucet back on and allow the remaining water in the pipes to drain.

Preparation for removing the shower faucet

Set out all the tools and materials you need so that you can easily access them. Cover the drain with an old towel to prevent screws from slipping in and to protect the tub from falling tools.

Removing the faucet handle

Using the tip of a small flathead screwdriver, pierce the side of the plastic cover located at the top of the faucet handle. Remove the plastic cover and set it aside. Inside the hole, locate the screw and turn it to the left with a Phillips screwdriver to loosen it and remove it along with the handle. Grasp the cover plate, if present, with a channel lock and pull it out. Align the parts of the faucet handle to make it easier to reinstall later.

Remove the old shower faucet

Locate the metal retaining ring or clip or nut that holds the cartridge in place and loosen it with an adjustable wrench and remove it. Using pliers, grasp the tip of the old shower fitting and pull it straight out of the valve.

Install the new shower fitting

Insert the new shower fitting or cartridge into the open valve. Slide the retaining ring, retaining clip or nut back in and tighten with an adjustable wrench.

Replacing the faucet handle

Reinstall the screw, faucet handle, and cover plate. Tighten the screw with the Phillips screwdriver and slide the plastic cover back over it.

Turning on the water source

Open the water valves that control the flow of water into the house and the valves on the water heater. Turn on the new faucet to test the water flow.
