For a character who only had three dolls, all of them in 1972, Steffie has had a remarkable impact on the Barbie line.

Steffie was introduced as a friend of Barbie and made three appearances: Busy Steffie, Talking Busy Steffie and Walk Lively Steffie.

The thing that has stuck around about Steffie though isn’t the girl herself - it’s her face sculpt. The Steffie face sculpt is a popular head mold that has been in use since Steffie’s debut, all the way up to the present day. Some remarkable dolls have been launched that used the Steffie face, including the first Black Barbie from 1980.

The Steffie face mold is so notable among collectors that there was an article about it in a 2003 issue of Barbie Bazaar, saying (in part):

Collectors cherish the Steffie-face dolls and can never seem to have enough of them. Mattel’s use of the Steffie head on the Modern Circle Simone Doll gives new hope to all diehard Steffie fans that the head mold may find further use with future friends and collector series dolls. In the meantime, do an EBay search in the Barbie category and count how many auctions pay homage to the Steffie name. Those auctions typically get the highest bids because of an undying love for the girl who vanished 30 years ago, though her name lives on.

If I ever say "I'll JUST do a quick fix up for sale, JUST recreate the factory hairstyle" tap me gently on the hand and say "No honey. You know what horrors can lie underneath a doll's up-do".

I started again from scratch: matte kanekalon that'll frazzle with a boil wash replaced with shiny saran, pulled out rooting errors, rethatched the parting and separated out better sections for the curly bits.

Of course, I got the RSI migraine on Sunday but once i'd seen the extent of it, it was a matter of pride that a high-end face screening on a Steffie not be sent back into the world with a messy hair-do. 😂

I haven't decided whether to sew in the 4 parts: i've always designed dolls to have their hair up or down but now that I know it works I can give her a quick trim, heat set the curls and send her on her way.

Zombies Run S3M28 A Little Night Music

I should have listened to Mozart's Eine Kleine Nachtmusik for this run. Would have been better than the upbeat pop stuff I was playing. Ran only 1.6km because I went with a few colleagues from work who were more keen on walking. I didn't mind it. It was a beautiful day in DC.

I really liked this mission. It had just enough creepiness, horror, madness, and mystery to keep me interested in the story. This is the first mission in a while where I didn't feel like there was pressure to pay attention to anyone's personal feelings or backstories. It was just a simple assignment where I had to figure out what was happening and get out as quickly as possible.

I feel bad for Abel later on having to go through the rescue mission at Comansys on their own, though. I hope it won't end badly.

The zombie repellent is made of Veronica's flowers, right? I am guessing the same ones that turned Paula crazy in the last mission. Well, I don't know what Veronica is up to, but someone's gotta watch her. And why were the rats attracted to the zombies or the blue flower scent? Why did they attack Steffie? I don't know. This is too weird.

Although Free Fire seems like a simple Battle Royale with a lot of shooting and little story, this is actually NOT the case. Not only the game happens in an universe of it's own, but also the characters you can play with are part of a major plot, with their own personalities, dilemmas, goals, and backgrounds. Since 2020, Garena has been exploring it's original content on different campaigns, including comics, short novels, animations, and even a live-action short-movie I was privileged to work on the Brazilian version.

One of the first big lore-based campaigns we had introduced the background story of Moco, one of Free Fire’s oldest characters, alongside the newly released graffiti girl, Steffie. During an year, we’ve published a 20 chapters’ webcomic, three short novels, and three different animations, besides the in-game related content and customized community assets, ranging from informative posts to Whatsapp Voice messages from the characters inviting content creators to join the events.

I was the sole translator for all those assets, besides the Project Manager, taking care of the entire communication and workflow related to this project. On one hand, I had to ensure that the designers and dubbing partners got all information and resources needed to complete their tasks. On the other hand, I had to guarantee that our social media and marketing teams got the final assets in time for publishing with the expected quality - all that while ensuring the correct tone, branding personality, and vocabulary consistency.

During a large project such as this, inside a growing IP, and while working as a double-agent as I did (Linguist and Project Manager 🤭) you’ve to learn how to optimize all and any resources you have available: softwares, colleagues, leaders, vendors. Talk to those around you, read the materials you have, explore the tools your organization has to offer. People have different perspectives and anyone can offer the insight you are searching to achieve the results expected by the company and, especially, by you.

Thanks to this project we’ve found the ideal workflow for multidisciplinary projects such as this, setting the track for ever growing successful campaigns. It was also during this project that we’ve started to understand the magic a proper partnership between community and localization could make, solidifying a continuing exchange mindset between those areas, ensured by procedures that are still at use.

This experience was enriching and particularly fun for me - as an otaku, it was a dream coming true to work on manga-like comics and animes productions. I am really proud of what I was able to learn and deliver during this project. The deliverables results were also great, with over one million views in YouTube.

Moco and Steffie became two of the most popular characters in the Brazilian community, having not only their appearances, but also their voices and stories acknowledged and recognized by the community. I literally had the opportunity to watch teenagers arguing about their awesomeness and using details from those assets during it - yes, I could feel the tears in my eyes when this happened.
