Punkflower Playlist Title Workshopping 🎧✨

Phase 2 of my playlist making process has begun, sorting into bins. Things will really pick up since I have a sense of the timeline now.

I’ve yet to figure out a name for Act III and if I wanna do an Act IV yet. But, here’s Act I

“Swinging 5 Feet Apart” and “Just Spiders Being Men” are under consideration to make it a lil more unique—feel like the later will be more easily understood?

I anticipate this playlist being where the musical genres are the most varied, since it has quite a bit of ground narrative to cover (initial meeting, the Spider Society betrayal, Gwen, sharing fears and traumas and comforting each other).

Act II is where all plausible deniability is completely dropped and OH do Iove it.

Tbh I’m pretty satisfied with this title. Making it singular like the reference wouldn’t be accurate since they’re mutually down bad for the other…speaking of which.

Why has nobody talked about the Sunflower Remix in regards to Punkflower?? The translation, the beat? The narrative setup and payoff when the playlist finally gets to the original Sunflower, what then?

Intro

So, i meant to post about this before now but I'm opening playlist commissions. Also, I'm new with this, so please be patient with me.

Okay, so, i find that I've got an affinity for making playlists for pretty much anything. Characters, stories, relationships, situations, feelings, etc... And i love making them so i want to make some for other people.

(Press "read more" if interested!)

Rules

1. Please be as detailed as possible, so i have enough to go off of.

2. Please don't claim the playlist as your own. If you post it anywhere, please just credit @harleycao on tumblr.

3. Please let me know if you prefer i make the playlist on Spotify or just type up the songs and artists. I can also do both.

4. I'll at least try to make a playlist for anything, but some examples are a character, a relationship, a story/story arc, a situation, or a story trope.

5. I'll also do pov playlists for relationships with certain characters (the tricky thing is that i have to know about the character already. I'll try to figure something out to make a seperate post that further explains/specifies for. this bit). Same thing for povs taking place im fictional worlds.

6. Please be patient while i get your playlist created

7. I have the right to decline to make your playlist if i don't have time or don't think i could do it adequately

8. You can request as many times as you want, but not all at once. One request at a time per person. If you want more, you have to send a seperate request once the previous one has been finished.

In terms of what music They™ enjoy (ie. stuff they actually listened to at that time, so mostly older stuff than the aughts):

Gabriel's mostly an alt rock/metal/punk & similar type, which I'm sure will surprise approximately no one who's read Gabriel. His frequently played artists include Nine Inch Nails (his favorite band), Joy Division, Tool, Radiohead, RATM and the like. He's also been known to dabble in more electronic genres (eg. we share an appreciation for Daft Punk and Depeche Mode), enjoy classical music (eg. Beethoven), and have a certain nostalgic fondness for some classic rock, such as GNR and Pink Floyd, and Elton John, who was his late mother's favorite singer.

Jeff's a big classic rock snob* - think GNR, Zeppelin, AC/DC, Rolling Stones, CCR, Van Halen, Springsteen. His favorite band is Pink Floyd (favorite album Animals). Caveat: if you get him drunk enough there's a chance he'll jokingly (read: fully seriously) put on either Aquamarine by Aqua or Voulez-Vous by Abba and get very into it.

*He gets that from me. The classic rock part, not the snob part.

You always ask the best questions 💛 I answered the first one here, and as for the second…

There is actually a playlist with many many songs for The Chief. Mainly they’re songs by Scottish artists, with some Madonna (Kirsty’s fave), The Lion King (Rory’s fave) and Phil Collins (Phil’s least fave) for good measure. Some relate to moments in the story, others to characters, I’ll let you guess which corresponds to what.

My top picks from the playlist are:

Circle of Life (Elton John) — Themes of life, death, and birth are massive in The Chief. It also has many parallels to William Shakespeare’s Hamlet, from which the epigraph is taken, mainly with the relationships between Rory/Kirsty/Phil reflecting the dynamic of Hamlet/Gertrude/Claudius, and Rory and Ruaridh (Doug) reflecting that of Hamlet and Old Hamlet. The biggest direct reference to Hamlet is Rory’s stating that his favourite film is The Lion King, which was based on Hamlet.

Papa Don’t Preach (Madonna) — the Virgin/Mother/Whore trichotomy is a recurring theme in Kirsty’s chapters, as is that of religion. Putting these themes together is hardly groundbreaking. Madonna explored all of this in her music (even her name is a reference to this!) about thirty years ago, uncoincidentally in the same timeline as Kirsty’s story is set. “It’s what Madonna would do”, indeed.

Sweet Child O’ Mine (Guns&Roses) — nothing to do with the plot or themes of the story, but to do with the writing process. The majority of the first draft was written while I was travelling, and I have a clear memory of sitting on a bench in the sunshine whilst writing and a busker singing a beautiful acoustic cover of this song. Normally I don’t like writing with music, but this was an exception.

Sunshine On Leith (The Proclaimers) — This is the most important song of all, and is referenced three times over the course of the novel. There’s a simple reason for this: the title is taken from the lyrics of song’s chorus. And while The Chief puts sunshine on Leith/I’ll thank Him for His work/and your birth/and my birth… It’s a song about being grateful for the people in your life and being a better and happier person because of them, which at the end of the day, is what this story is all about.

2. I personally headcannon the whole “Early College” thing in Legendborn as just normal college. Sexy situations aside I think aging up the characters it solves plot contrivances and makes things simpler where the more complicated option isn’t terribly interesting. As such, the relationship discussed between Briana and Selwyn is between two adults. Moreover, while Sel’s demonia makes an ~appearance~ and influence, this playlist is meant to be conceptualized without the looming threat of him descending into demonia and subsequent blurring of the lines between “safe, sane, and consensual”, as is in Demonia’s Descent. So like…in my headcannon/playlist AU, the power of love makes Sel better at edging his demon? Yeah. Yeah? Sure.

…look, I’m not here to make this shit actually make sense with the plot. That’s for the lovely theorists, fix-it/alt POV fic writers and resource gathering fandom members’ forte. I’m here to provide the official soundtrack of Legendborn smut for those of us on the front lines when there was under 100 fics total on AO3 and for the new fans that will come when Book 3 is released. I do have an aspiration to take undue credit for one of playlist songs ending up in the Legendborn TV show—oh y’all couldn’t tell me NOTHINGGG. If nothing else, I just want people to enjoy and create fan works to the playlists, cuz this is my own kind of fan work 😊

So, Of Our Own Volition had Brelwyn making love for the first time. The earliest one could theorize it happening (with a non heteronormative definition of sex) could be Into Orbit…tho personally? It’s when The Line was clearly crossed in Virgo’s Scorpio’s Groove. Immediately followed by Sel having a damn religious ascension with Submerge: Until We Become the Sun. We get some afterglow and end on a flirty, playful, even experimental note with We Might Even Be Falling In Love (feat. Bryson Tiller for my Spotify peeps). It’s all very saccharine and tender and sweet and I love it…

This is not that playlist. They are grown and fucking fucking now. We are getting explicit. We are getting kinky. I allowed myself like one and a halfish toxic song in this playlist, since there’s more than enough excellent but SUPER TOXIC relationship songs for the TLC trio, regardless if you’re OT3 endgame or Brelwyn endgame. …A Toxic OT3 playlist will come in due time, with my softboi hours (Brickel? Nickee? Brick?) Brick Playlist along side it as a palette cleanser.

But now? I want input for what a grown and sexy playlist would be for these two!I like wording and terminology from the book—“Everything in Between” isn’t bad but feels too wordy? I think I wanna have transition songs like the instrumental tracks in O3V and DD. But my searches for “sexy violin” are not giving what I need it to.

An idea I have is to instead have shifts be denoted by a lil “Demonia Dip” as I call it. Not full on Act V of DD bad but like, compared to the rest of the playlist you’d be like “oh yeah it’s that bastard again” we’re talking For Your Entertainment by Adam Lambert and a reappearance of Tonight You are Mine by the Technicolors.

This is an R&B slowjams playlist for our protagonist and King Bree first and foremost… but Sel IS a white boy with THAT kinda playlist for his deepest, darkest desires…it’s only fair the cambion brain gets a few tracks, if only to signal “oh we are NASTY nasty now huh—“ Plus I let the white boy freak flag fly by starting off O3V with Sweater Weather. He can have a dip or two. As a treat.
