Around this time every year, dozens of concerned folks post this lovely mushroom in identification forums, anxiously wondering if they’re found a deathcap. Nope! This beauty is Stropharia ambigua, the questionable stropharia. It’s recognizable by its slate grey gills, yellow cap, and gorgeous, delicate and feathery veil. While beautiful, and likely not poisonous, it has a pretty gross taste (like eating soggy dead leaves) and isn’t considered edible.

I love this mushroom for so many reasons, but it gave me such a hard time! In my field guide it really resembles the author’s picture of Stropharia aeruginosa, a brilliant blue mushroom that can lose its blue coloring as it matures. If it is this, I do wish I could have seen it when it was blue! There are so few blue mushrooms.

The mycologists I know were also conflicted, but I was on the right track. We narrowed down to either Stropharia aeruginosa; Stropharia ambigua (the common name is literally ‘questionable stropharia’); or Leratiomyces percevalii, which was previously classified in the stropharia genus.

This specimen has the wiggliest stem.
