Four Fragrance Recommendations for Summer 2023!

Hello! welcome to the first official post here on Vapours. Here in the UK we are currently enjoying the beginnings of springtime, the weather is finally starting to brighten up after the bitter cold and grey skies of winter. Of course being Britain we are still getting the typical few days of rain every now and then but that is to be expected. Despite spring only just beginning I already find myself daydreaming about summer. The bright sunshine, the lush green of trees and plants, sipping ice cold cocktails in the back garden of my house back in my home town. I even find myself fantasizing about running away to travel around the rest of Europe, strolling through the streets of Paris, Lounging under lemon trees on the Amalfi Coast etc.

So, in the spirit of yearning for the sun and romanticizing the hell out of the approaching summer months, here are my top four fragrances that I will be drenching myself in this summer while I do my best to fool myself into believing that I’m basking in sunlight and salty ocean air instead of being stuck behind the bar of the pub I work at serving old white men mediocre beer.

NUMBER ONE: Maison Margiela, Replica, Under the lemon trees.

Maison Margiela’s replica fragrance line is pretty well known at this point, no doubt you’ve seen it make the rounds on perfume tiktok. In the case of under the lemon trees this fame is entirely justified. The replica line is all about the idea of scent memory, using scent to transport you wherever the perfumer wants to take you. Under the lemon trees is indulging in a freezing cold iced tea whilst reclining in the garden of your summer home, an isolated villa in the Italian countryside. The mouthwatering smell of fresh citrus hangs in the humid air, drifting in on the breeze from your own private orchard.

Under the lemon trees (launched in 2018) is juicy, refreshing, and sweet without being sickly. It’s romantic without relying on the typical florals we associate with romance.

The top notes of Lime, Petitgrain, And Cardamom are fresh and inviting. Then as the scent wears the heart notes emerge; Tea, Mate, and Coriander turning this fragrance into the most delicious green tea lemonade. It’s cool and refreshing whilst still managing to retain this innate feeling of warmth, like the sun hitting your skin. Then, finally, after your long day lounging under the sun, the base notes start to come through, White musk, Cedar, and Rock rose. The lingering smell of the orchard clings to your skin, the wood of the trees and the faintest hint of citrus. The sun begins to set over your own personal paradise, and tomorrow you get to do it all over again.

Under the Lemon trees is refreshing, warm, inviting and utterly delicious. It’s what I imagine Elio smells like in Call me your name. It’s one of my favourite fragrances of all time and I absolutely cannot wait to wear it again this summer.

NUMBER TWO: Diptyque, Philosykos

Diptyque is known for making absolute bangers when it comes to fragrance, which is definitely a good thing considering the price point. Philosykos, despite first being launched in 1996, was everywhere I looked in summer 2022, it was THE fig perfume closely followed by DS and Durga’s ‘Debaser’ which is still on my wishlist to try. Despite my amateur status I can say for definite that Philosykos is one of the most beautiful summer fragrances I have ever experienced in my whole life.

Philosykos is warm and green with a sweet, creamy, perhaps even a little musky, undercurrent. wearing Philosykos is like tearing open the flesh of a juicy, sun ripened fig with your bare teeth, it so perfectly melds with my own skin, it projection isn’t huge and it’s not a very loud fragrance which I must confess is my usual criteria for perfume, but something about it enchants you in a way that is near impossible to describe. There is something Nymph like about it, the idyllic image it conjures in my mind. Children of the gods lounging by crystal clear lakes and ponds, drunk on ambrosia, skin glistening with sweat.

The top notes of Fig leaf and Fig really shine upon first spray, it has a green and plant like opening that is mellowed beautifully by the soft sweetness of the fruit. the heart notes are described as ‘green notes’ and coconut, so again the fresh green plant like smell continues but the coconut introduces this creamy softness without smelling overly like coconut so no need to worry if you’re concerned about smelling like a pina colada. Finally the base notes are described as Fig tree, ‘woody notes’, and Cedar. I believe it’s this introduction of woods that really help ground the fragrance, they add very soft earthiness to the fragrance that conjures an almost photo-realistic scent of a fig tree when combined with the other notes that make up the fragrance.

I cannot emphasize enough that while subtle, philosykos is beautiful and unforgettable as a summer fragrance.

NUMBER THREE: Etat libre d’orange, Remarkable People

I’ve never owned a full bottle of ELDO’s Remarkable people, launched in 2015 and created by Cecile Matton, but I did get a sample when I treated myself to the ELDO sample discovery set last summer. This scent along with the famous ‘Jasmine et cigarette’ are still on my wishlist for fragrances. Remarkable people was actually my first foray into summery citrus fragrances and as I soon came to find out, ELDO have a penchant for experimentation and putting their own spin on things.

Remarkable people was one of my favourites from the discovery kit and for good reason! It opens with top notes of Grapefruit, Champagne, and Cardamom. It’s fresh, warm and just like Champagne, delightfully effervescent. There really is this sparkling quality to the opening of the fragrance and it still to this day baffles me how they manage to create that in a perfume. The heart notes consist of Black Pepper, Curry Tree, and Jasmine; I found this really interesting upon first spritz because I’ve never been a huge fan of spicy citrus scents but something about this one just works for me, perhaps it’s the jasmine? (I’m a sucker for white florals). Whatever it is that makes this combination of citrus and spice work for me I welcome it with open arms! It creates a much more elevated fragrance, makes it feel a little more adult which I love seeing as it’s tricky for me to find fragrances with fruit notes that don’t tend to skew more gourmand or dessert like which I must confess I really don’t enjoy. Finally, the base notes, a trio of Sandalwood, Lorenox, and Labdanum create a woody amber base for this fragrance that I really like; again it helps this fragrance feel more elevated and a lot more grown up. another great thing about the spice and woody amber in this fragrance is that this means this fragrance can easily work for both summer and autumn.

I really enjoyed this scent and while it is on my wishlist I am slightly on the fence purely because there are other fragrances by ELDO I adore and the price point does limit me somewhat. So my recommendation is that if this doesn’t definitely sound like something you want I’d suggest you try something with similar notes at a much more affordable price point in order to make sure this is the kind of fragrance for you.

NUMBER FOUR: Gucci, Memoire d’une Odeur

Memoire (launched 2019 by Alberto Morillas) is another fragrance that I have not personally owned but am a big fan of and I think it’s perfect for summer especially for you cottagecore girlies out there. It’s soft and airy, almost magical in a way, this fragrance makes me think of drinking chamomile tea in a sun room absolutely full of plants whilst enjoying a good book. Memoire is delicate, sophisticated and at the same time warm and playful.

The top notes consist of Chamomile and Bitter almonds which give this fragrance it’s gentle tea like opening, it’s warm and inviting, perhaps even comforting. The heart notes, Musk, Indian jasmine, and jasmine are so SO beautiful and really showcase the range of jasmine as a floral. I think when most people think of white florals they associate them with powerhouse fragrances like Mugler’s (RIP) Alien or Alien goddess which is like being punched in the face with a bouquet of Jasmine (which I love) or Kismet Olfactive’s Tuberose Tantra which is just an absolute sex bomb but anyway I digress, my point is that usually white florals, like Jasmine are associated with super seductive femme fatale fragrances (unless you’re one of those weirdos who thinks it smells like old ladies) but the jasmine in memiore is done so beautifully, it is impossibly delicate in a way that compliments the other notes without stifling the beautiful floral scent of the Jasmine. Finally the base notes, Sandalwood, Cedar, and Vanilla, these base notes round out this beautiful fragrance wonderfully. The woodyness adds a pleasant earthiness that compliments the jasmine as it drys down and the sweetness of the vanilla really completes the delicious and comforting chamomile tea smell I enjoy in this fragrance, almost like drinking a vanilla chamomile tea latte of some kind. Conjures the image of Kiki and Osono drinking tea at a large wooden dining table after a long day running the bakery in Kiki’s delivery service.

I love memoire, it’s a scent that reminds me of my best friend as it’s a fragrance she often wore and would let me steal a cheeky spritz of every now and again. Definitely a fragrance I would recommend, especially seeing as it would work as a wonderful spring fragrance too!
