kara zor-el headcanons

- not stick thin. shes shaped like a soft door!!

- has scars from her childhood on krypton, specifically on her knees, arms, and hands

- kryptonians can scar if a) wounded and healed under a red sun and/or b) wound is caused by kryptonite (these scars won’t be That noticeable though). kara has scars on her wrists and upper arms.

- her eyes aren’t actually that blue. they’re more greenish grey, like her father’s

- bigender. when she was in midvale a lot of people would make fun of her because she looks very androgynous, but she didn’t realise until later that she was bigender and didn’t care how people perceived her gender

- starts binding in her 20s. as someone with super strength binding is pretty breezy for her however fighting is hard because sometimes she’s weakened and post fight her ribs are in HELL.

- likes having long hair, but cuts it again when she turns 18, and grows it out again the following year

- she’s not a Devout raoist, but she takes her religion quite seriously and also feels a huge kinship with the jewish people

- she specifically prays quite a lot to Cythonna (krypton’s ice goddess)

- she really really loves writing, and writes poetry constantly

- in a queerplatonic relationship with brainiac 5

- really into history. like REALLY into history. studies it eventually.

- is so fucking incredibly proud of her family. she can’t believe how much the house of el has grown since she was that small 15 year old kid in midvale.

- kinda has a complex about being alone though, but shes working on it!

- really loves nighttime. her favourite memories of midvale include flying alone at night

- doesn’t wear makeup often, it makes her itchy and she has sensory issues

- diagnosed with ADHD shortly after being adopted by the danvers, strongly suspected to be autistic but hasn’t been diagnosed for various reasons

- sleep talks in kryptonian. try explaining that to lena thorul after a sleepover

- really good with numbers and dates but not good at maths

- doesn’t actually like science all that much

- really really good with kids, especially babies. shes a damn natural and kids love her. she WILL start crying if she sees a kid cry

- secretly refers to herself as kar-el sometimes. only person she’s ever told is kon, who is also nonbinary

- unlike kal, she keeps her legion ring visible! when shes not Supergirl she cloaks it to look like a normal ring

- loves necklaces in theory but doesnt wear them because sensory issues

Helping Lena With Her Magic Would Include

Patience is key. If you don’t have patience with her, both of you are likely to end up hurting yourselves.

Lena is hesitant to use her magic at all, so you have to take things slow, like baby steps with her, even though she’ll hate that she’s not picking it up faster.

It’s important to celebrate the small victories. If you can get Lena smiling and feeling confident about using her magic, she’ll improve much quicker.

Breaks. Lena will want to focus so hard and so long that she tires herself out and hence, effects the magic itself, so making her sit down and de-stress for a little while is good.

Hold her hand. She can work the spell with her intention, but having you holding her hand to ground her can be both reassuring and beneficial to the magic itself.

Supergirl HCs

1. Kara has perfect pitch because of her superhearing so she can pretty much learn any instrument within a matter of seconds.

2. Brainy eats heavy sugar when he's sad and Nia will have to stop him sometimes to make sure he doesn't get a sugar high.

3. Both Alex and Lena went through punk/emo phases and like to listen to MCR when they hang out together.

4. Kara's hung out with Nia so much she gained a sense of gen z humor and started becoming slightly more sarcastic and sassy because of it.

5. Lena uses Kara like an alien swiss army knife sometimes like she'll use Kara as a heater when cold or air conditioning when hot. She'll also use her like a microwave,a delivery/take out service,a heating pad,step stool,massage chair and a private jet(she has a fear of heights but trusts kara more than a plane so she usually asks kara to fly her to overseas meetings[she rewards Kara with kisses tho so Kara isn't gonna complain])

Being the human daughter of Kara Danvers...

She saved you after one of your foster sisters started cooking meth in the basement with your foster parents.

You were trying to get all the younger kids out. You were the second oldest.

Something about you make Kara very protective of you, so she did a little interview as Kara Danvers to meet you after Maggie called social services

That wasn't the last of Kara you saw

She would always call to the group home you were placed in to make sure you were okay

You always looked forward to her visits, they quickly became the highlight of your week

Then one day the head of the group home informed you that someone wanted to foster you

So you went to meet them

'Kara? What are you doing here?' 'I was hoping that you would... I dunno stay with me for a while?'

You were frozen in place. Kara wanted to adopt you!

You ran up to her, hugging her as tight as humanly possible

Living with Kara was like a dream come true. She always helped out with homework where she could and her sister Alex would pick you up after school

But soon you realised that she would disappear at the most random times and when she'd come back she was in different clothes and looked like she had the weight of the world on her shoulders.

But when she left for an entire day, you rang Alex crying over the phone, worried about your foster mother.

Alex picked you up, promising that she would explain everything.

She brought you to her place of work. You thought she was a doctor for the military but when you saw the amount of FBI looking people, she told you that she was really a special agent that protects earth from criminal extraterrestrial beings with the help of Supergirl.

Before you could ask what her job had to do with Kara, a weird blue portal opened up.

You saw Supergirl walk out with Kara's boyfriend, Mike and a man with the same uniform as the agents walk out.

Alex walked up to Supergirl, talking to her as she handed her something.

Supergirl walked over to you, noticing the tears on your face. 'Hi little one' she forced a smile.

Only Kara called you that

Forcing the anger away, you hugged her as you cried. Only happy that she didn't leave you.

After being reunited, that anger you forced away came back, but you weren't angry at Kara. You angry at yourself

Were you too childish? Did you betray her trust somehow? Maybe you were a threat to her secret?

The man they came with quickly whispered something in Kara's ear. You could have sworn that his eyes weren't red a minute ago.

'Little one, I need you to know the reason I didn't tell you was because I wanted to keep you safe. It care about you so much'

Kara hugged you, promising to tell you everything and she did.

Since that day, you both got closer. Friday nights were now movie night. You even partaked in Game night with her friends and even joined Sister night.

Mondays became your night, the two of you eating tons of takeout and watching whatever you could find on Netflix

One day, you were staying in Kara's little office, studying for your last exam of the year. That's when Kara came in with a pristine white envelope in hand.

She handed you the envelope, eager for you to open it.

You looked up at her with tears in your eyes.

'You wanna adopt me?' 'Of course I do little one, I love you'

Hugs, tears and lots of cake had filled the day.

When Kara's Earth birthday was coming close, you asked Clark, seeing as you were now his second cousin, to teach you some kryptonian.

Kara woke to the smell of bacon. You waltzed into her room with her favourite breakfast. 'Aw, little one' Kara smiled, kissing your cheek. 'Thank you'

That's when your first present was given 'Happy Birthday... Jeju'

Tears welled in Kara's eyes, making you worried you pronounced it wrong.

'You called my mom... in kryptonian' you were tackled in a hug. 'I said it right?'

Now you only ever called her jeju

OMG Rachel, I never even thought about that!!!

I think maybe J'onn would be wary at first, or upset because he doesn't understand and is afraid of Brainy hurting his "daughters" but then when he learns that Brainy's own family did that to him, he'd be so upset and want to help Brainy! And mentor him like he has Kara and Alex.

nine random headcanons

for the ship wanda/kara

superfriends team up with the avengers to stop the bad guy, save the world, etc. that’s when kara and wanda met. wanda was still with vision at the time, but there was definitely ✨chemistry✨ between kara and wanda.....nothing happened until after the events of wandavision, and after kara has already revealed herself to the world as supergirl, blah blah blah. so kara is superheroing one day and she realises that there is already a hero there, beating the bad guy or saving the cat from a tree either one. kara turns to go and let it be, but then she notices it’s wanda. cue their little italicized “oh” moment. you know the one where you’re like oh, hello. it’s going to be you? that was it for them. kara learns russian for wanda, the same way that wanda keeps kryptonian alive for kara.

the boys call kara jeju. they consider her the fun mum.

tommy and billy are known to kara as her firstborns. they are in the succession to become heroes like her, and she will give them equal parts of the mantle to hold. there’s no competition here. just tons of love.

wanda will live almost as long as kara. they will have so many children, adopted and born from the matrix both.

kara and wanda each have a soft spot for kids, so naturally adoption is an easy decision to make for them. they bring home “strays” like the newspaper. their home is basically like a halfway home to half the nation.

wanda loves to cook and kara loves to eat so basically they’re perfect for one another lmaoooooo but wanda learns how to make potstickers and kara (after eating approx. 20) kisses her for a good three and a half minutes.

when kara is knocked out from a fight, and needs to recover while still asleep, wanda uses her powers to make a world where they’re together with kids inside kara’s head. this is before they get together officially, ofc. and then when kara wakes up and kisses wanda she’s like “i’ve wanted that for so long and you were so quick to give it to me.....thank you.”

they have a variety of animals at any time: namely a cat named streaky & a dog named krypto.

they’re also fans of doctor who ---- a time traveling hero? oh come on, you already know it. also the boys create a robot dog that gets christened k9. they’re bigger fans of the classic who series, despite it being in black and white. they are old school like that.

I love/hate the idea that after a while, Kara lost a lot of her ability to speak Kryptonian. According to *the internet,* below age 12 or so is where you start to lose fluency if you’re not regularly speaking the language. Especially with the urgent need to assimilate, I can totally see Kara becoming less and less fluent over time and finding one more degree of distance from her culture… 🥺

On Krypton, vows had meaning. Proclamations were not made lightly, and promises were not given casually. Kara’s peers wouldn’t throw one out as a reassurance, or to settle an argument. They were a logical people. They didn’t deceive, didn’t speak words they didn’t know to be true, and didn’t give opinions that were not informed. Society was ordered and regimented, and everyone put the greater good before themselves. So if you made a promise, no matter how great or how small, you would do it.

Kara learned, later in life, that a lot of her birth culture was, to use an English word that had no equivalent in her language, bullshit. Kryptonians would, she thought, claim that they had no use for such a vulgar term for cavalier prevarication because they did not practice it. That would had been a lie.

Her parents bullshitted her. They bullshitted her about the society she was growing up in. Her world wasn’t a real of perfect logic and order, it was a hidebound, decaying ex-empire that put tradition so irrationally high on a pedestal that they let their world be destroyed and all but a handful of their people wiped out because tradition said that her uncle was wrong about the planetary core going unstable.

Nevertheless, when Kara made a promise, she meant it. When she said she’d vowed to protect her adoptive home with her life, she meant it. Those words all but signed her life away in service to the cause. She was this way in everything, from saving the world down to brining Cat Grant a precisely prepared cup of coffee. Her promises meant something.

That was why she filled herself with dread the instant a promise, given unthinkingly in the heat of the moment, tumbled out of her mouth.

I will always be your friend, and I will always protect you.

She’d dishonored herself with the promise, one broken as it was made. She held Lena tight, speaking with conviction, and promised to be a friend even as she lied, swore to protect even as she deceived. It was a promise that couldn’t be kept no matter what she did.

Kara had become human in so many ways, and it gnawed at her. Another English word that had no exact Kryptonian equivalent was freedom. A proper Kryptonian would be horrified at ideas that boiled down to “I can do what I want”; I can choose my career, my partner, my life. I can put fulfillment ahead of the role chosen for me by those who know better. Yet Kara had embraced it full throated, making choices whenever she could.

The one thing she would never give up was the value of an oath.

She was over the Pacific, thinking. She would come out here from time to time to think and clear her head when the city soundscape became overwhelming, and just let herself drift in the air. There were no texts to agonize over, no emails from Snapper, nothing but herself and the lapping of waves and the distant rumble of storms over the open ocean.

She’d been coming out here more and more of late, not to think but to avoid thinking.

Because Lena knew, and Kara knew something was wrong. She could be dense about human behavior sometimes, but she was no fool… and she had super senses. She could read Lena’s pulse and see infrared flush of her skin and spot micro-movements of her eyes. Kara wanted desperately to believe that nothing was wrong but her instincts said otherwise.

When Kara told her, Lena had gone stock still and stared at her with what Kara thought was hatred, bringing tears. She’d tried to tell her how sorry she was, but Lena had just walked right past her and only later returned to her usual self.

Almost.

Kara had thrown herself into it, going on a campaign of what Alex had called ‘peacocking’ for some reason, all but burying Lena with super-stunts like fetching fresh pastries from French patissiers. Lena had smiled and thanked her but there was something flat and distant in it, and Kara ignored it and insisted that all was well.

Out here, with just the storms and her secrets, she knew it wasn’t.

Kara fingered the crest on her chest, worrying her thumb over the crimson fabric of the El rune. This meant something. It meant both ‘hope’ and ‘stronger together’; the two ideas were inextricably linked but her cousin only understood one of the meanings, because Kryptonian pictographic language was complex, and he was not Kryptonian in any way that mattered.

That was another great failing, a promise that Kara made but didn’t keep. By her people’s standards, there was no shame in that; one did not bear the responsibility of a promise made under duress, or a promise that others demanded knowing that it couldn’t be kept.

The only one she’d kept Kryptonian was herself, deep in a secret corner of her soul that meant it if she said she’d be at your birthday party or bring you a donut. The part that treated promises like promises.

There was only one way to cleanse herself, and remove her shame. She knew what it was, but she was afraid. Kara had battled monsters and gods, faced death more than once, lost more than any person should have to lose in a dozen lifetimes, but there was one thing she feared above all others.

She feared that first honest look on Lena’s shocked face more than she feared an eternity without stars. She could live in the void between realities; a void without Lena would kill her more surely than any green poison.

Now. She had to do it now, before she lost her nerve. She flew back to the city, flew hard, slowing only to land on Lena’s balcony, softly. As she raised her hand to knock on the glass of the door, she hesitated, nearly turned back.

Lena opened it, and Kara let out a slow breath. Lena was wearing only a loose, flowing floral robe, with clearly nothing beneath it. Terror made her listen- if Lena had a guest in that state, Kara might just fling herself into the sun and be done with it.

She was alone. Lena shifted on her feet.

“Why are you all wet?”

Kara’s hair was damp with sea spray and she’d flown through a few clouds on her way back.

“I like to fly over the ocean and think.”

“Well, come in here already. Let me get you a towel. Do you want something to change into?”

Kara swallowed hard. No. She wanted the honor of her family on her chest right now. She needed it to make her brave, like her father said it would when he sent her into the void. She did take the towel.

Lena had been enjoying her tea and sad breakfast -toast with jam- before Kara arrived. She left it on the counter and sat on her couch, leaving Kara to pace.

“I can tell you’re upset,” said Lena. “Tell me what’s wrong.”

“Everything,” said Kara. “I have a lot to say and I don’t know how to say it. I haven’t told you the full truth and I have to. I need to. It’s eating me alive inside.”

Lena swallowed hard, her heart racing.

“Please don’t tell me you’re Batman, too.”

“Lena, this is serious.”

Kara swept across the room and knelt in front of her, and Lena’s eyes shot open wide in surprise. Kara looked at the carpet in front of her, unable to look Lena in the eye.

“A long time ago, I promised you I’d always take care of you, and I didn’t. I was lying to you when I said it and I lied to you for years after.”

“Kara…”

“Please,” desperation choked her voice, “let me finish. I owe you the full truth. I promised, and promises are sacred to Kryptonians. My soul will be stained forever unless I fulfill the oath I made.”

“It wasn’t that big of a deal.”

“Yes it was,” said Kara. “It was to me. It was everything to me. Please.”

Lena cleared her throat. “Okay.”

“I told you I lied to you to protect you. That was another lie. That’s not why I did it. I lied because I was weak and I put my own feelings ahead of doing what was right. I was scared. I was scared that if you knew it would change how you saw me and it would change our relationship. You were the only person I could almost be myself with and I didn’t want that to change. You were a safe person I could go to without having to be Supergirl.”

Lena was studying her, a soft hint of skepticism in her expression.

Kara stood up and paced.

“I don’t know how to do this, Lena. I may act human and look human but I’m not. I grew up on another planet with another culture and so many things about this world are just totally different from how I was raised.”

Kara took a deep breath.

“On Krypton we didn’t have queerness. People didn’t value freedom of choice. You did what society told you to do. You joined the guild you were pledge to at birth and married the person you were told to marry and had the offspring you were told to have and raised them to do the same thing. The same fucking thing.”

Lena sat up at Kara’s sudden, vehement profanity.

“I didn’t know the word freedom until I arrived here. I had no concept of it. I had no idea how fragile and precious it is. Sure, I talked about it and wrote essays about it in school, but I didn’t get it. Not until I met you.”

Kara looked at Lena.

“You are my freedom. You’re the first thing I’ve ever chosen, really chosen, in my life, besides being Supergirl. It was you that made me look Cat Grant and Alex both in the eyes and say ‘no, this is what I want, this is how it’s going to be for me and it’s my choice, not yours.’ Back home I never, ever would have even thought what I’m about to say now.”

Kara swallowed, hard.

“I was afraid to tell you because I was afraid it would change our relationship. I was afraid you’d hate me because I kept the secret too long, but I was also afraid of what has to come after confessing my identity to you, Lena. The next part is even harder.”

“Kara,” Lena began.

“I have feelings for you.”

Lena went still, her eyes wide. “What did you say?”

“I want to be myself with you. My whole self, my real self. Not the person I think I have to be to please someone else. I want to tell you everything you want to know about my home and my people and my life and I want to know everything about you. I want to hear you laugh for me and see the look in your eyes when you’re happy to see me. I want to care for you when you’re sick and hold you when you’re sad and be the person that matters to you like you matter to me.”

Kara sucked in a deep breath.

“I used to think I was happy just being Kara with you. Not being Kara Danvers or Kara Zoe-El, just me… but I’m not me without both of those pieces and being without them isn’t good enough. I want you to know the real me. The girl from Krypton who went to high school in California.”

Lena stood up slowly, clearly forcing her breathing even. She adjusted her robe around herself, and looked at Kara for too long a time, silent.

“I hurt you when I promised I’d protect you and I’ll never forgive myself for that.”

“What do you want from me? To tell you it’s okay?” said Lena. “Is that what you want? Because it’s fucking not.”

Kara flinched. She opened her mouth, then closed it.

Lena had given her this courtesy and she’d give it in return.

“It wasn’t just you, Kara. I built my whole life around you and your friends and they became my friends. You gave me a normal world. I got to be a regular girl when I was with you and the others. Do you have any idea what that means to me? What you did to me when you ripped it away? Do you have any idea how you’ve torn me to shreds?”

Kara choked a little, and tried to hold back the tears, and failed.

“I killed Lex. I killed him and I hid his body, myself. I killed my brother for you. And the worst part is I’d do it again. If it was him or you I’d kill him again.”

Cold dread flooded through her.

“That was my fault. That was exactly the kind of thing that I should have protected you from, and I failed you." Kara's breath hitched as she bit back a sob. "I should go."

Lena moved quickly and grabbed her arm tight. "Don't you fucking dare leave. You can't just say those things to me and leave."

Kara's nostrils flared as she sucked in a big breath.

"Lex told me who you were as he was dying. He showed me."

Kara looked at her. "Oh."

"I started to hate you. I started to believe the things he said about you. And what happened then? You told me! You just blurted it out!"

Lena choked down a sob of her own, and something in Kara shattered. Tentatively, carefully, Kara pulled her into a gentle hug, and Lena let her.

"I don't know what to do anymore," Lena whispered into Kara's chest. "I've lost everything."

Kara held her closer, breathing the soft scent of her shower-damp hair.

"I don't know what to do either," Kara admitted. "I just knew I couldn't bear to lie to you again, even by omission. I'll go if you want."

"You're not leaving," said Lena. "I don't want you to go. Promise you won't leave me."

Kara shivered. "Lena…"

"Promise."

"I promise," Kara whispered.

Nyxly Saving You Would Include

It wouldn’t be something she willingly threw herself wholeheartedly into. Rescuing people really isn’t her thing.

She’d take it as a test that one of the totems was giving her.

While her rescue attempt would indeed go off flawlessly, it wasn’t hard to tell her heart wasn’t fully in it.

But, after getting you to safety, she’d get a little cheer from the small crowd around her and kind of feel good about her good deed.

Then she’d look to you and when you’d smile at her, she’d really start to feel that sense of pride in herself.

Um im genuinely scared at how much the last 2 of these was rebloged...but wth

Supergirl HCs (Alex and supercorp edition)

1. Alex will relentless tease them during game night

2. Lena and Kara watch Esme on Fridays so Alex can romance Kelly

3. Alex has caught them 3 times and still doesn't knock

4. Alex is Lena's emotional support when kara has to go off world/help the justice league

5. Alex helps Kara with setting up supercorps anniversary dates(which Kara goes all out on[and i mean like traveling to paris at 3am. Going on rooftops to watch the stars.] just like overly romantic over the top dates[Kara:BECAUSE LENA DESERVES TO BE ROMANCED LIKE SHES IN A FAIRYTALE,ALEX!!])

6. Lena and Alex have "girlfriend/wife switch nights" which means Alex and Lena get drunk and watch horror movies(Kara and Kelly make pies and Kara talks about krypton while Kelly talks about the military)

•You are texting Sam then your sisters Lucy and Lois noticed you smiling.

•They start to ask questions and you hide your phone.

•But Lois and Lucy stole your phone and start to read the texts.

•But you are fast and took the phone back.

•Now they are asking who is Sam. Then you tell them she is a friend, but they don't believe you.

•Now they are teasing you and you call them childish.

•Now they start to ask questions of who is Sam and you don't want to say anything.

•You did ask Sam out on a date and she said yes.

•While getting ready, you didn't know what to wear.

•But Khonshu would say something about your outfit then you would change again.
