On Krypton, vows had meaning. Proclamations were not made lightly, and promises were not given casually. Kara’s peers wouldn’t throw one out as a reassurance, or to settle an argument. They were a logical people. They didn’t deceive, didn’t speak words they didn’t know to be true, and didn’t give opinions that were not informed. Society was ordered and regimented, and everyone put the greater good before themselves. So if you made a promise, no matter how great or how small, you would do it.
Kara learned, later in life, that a lot of her birth culture was, to use an English word that had no equivalent in her language, bullshit. Kryptonians would, she thought, claim that they had no use for such a vulgar term for cavalier prevarication because they did not practice it. That would had been a lie.
Her parents bullshitted her. They bullshitted her about the society she was growing up in. Her world wasn’t a real of perfect logic and order, it was a hidebound, decaying ex-empire that put tradition so irrationally high on a pedestal that they let their world be destroyed and all but a handful of their people wiped out because tradition said that her uncle was wrong about the planetary core going unstable.
Nevertheless, when Kara made a promise, she meant it. When she said she’d vowed to protect her adoptive home with her life, she meant it. Those words all but signed her life away in service to the cause. She was this way in everything, from saving the world down to brining Cat Grant a precisely prepared cup of coffee. Her promises meant something.
That was why she filled herself with dread the instant a promise, given unthinkingly in the heat of the moment, tumbled out of her mouth.
I will always be your friend, and I will always protect you.
She’d dishonored herself with the promise, one broken as it was made. She held Lena tight, speaking with conviction, and promised to be a friend even as she lied, swore to protect even as she deceived. It was a promise that couldn’t be kept no matter what she did.
Kara had become human in so many ways, and it gnawed at her. Another English word that had no exact Kryptonian equivalent was freedom. A proper Kryptonian would be horrified at ideas that boiled down to “I can do what I want”; I can choose my career, my partner, my life. I can put fulfillment ahead of the role chosen for me by those who know better. Yet Kara had embraced it full throated, making choices whenever she could.
The one thing she would never give up was the value of an oath.
She was over the Pacific, thinking. She would come out here from time to time to think and clear her head when the city soundscape became overwhelming, and just let herself drift in the air. There were no texts to agonize over, no emails from Snapper, nothing but herself and the lapping of waves and the distant rumble of storms over the open ocean.
She’d been coming out here more and more of late, not to think but to avoid thinking.
Because Lena knew, and Kara knew something was wrong. She could be dense about human behavior sometimes, but she was no fool… and she had super senses. She could read Lena’s pulse and see infrared flush of her skin and spot micro-movements of her eyes. Kara wanted desperately to believe that nothing was wrong but her instincts said otherwise.
When Kara told her, Lena had gone stock still and stared at her with what Kara thought was hatred, bringing tears. She’d tried to tell her how sorry she was, but Lena had just walked right past her and only later returned to her usual self.
Almost.
Kara had thrown herself into it, going on a campaign of what Alex had called ‘peacocking’ for some reason, all but burying Lena with super-stunts like fetching fresh pastries from French patissiers. Lena had smiled and thanked her but there was something flat and distant in it, and Kara ignored it and insisted that all was well.
Out here, with just the storms and her secrets, she knew it wasn’t.
Kara fingered the crest on her chest, worrying her thumb over the crimson fabric of the El rune. This meant something. It meant both ‘hope’ and ‘stronger together’; the two ideas were inextricably linked but her cousin only understood one of the meanings, because Kryptonian pictographic language was complex, and he was not Kryptonian in any way that mattered.
That was another great failing, a promise that Kara made but didn’t keep. By her people’s standards, there was no shame in that; one did not bear the responsibility of a promise made under duress, or a promise that others demanded knowing that it couldn’t be kept.
The only one she’d kept Kryptonian was herself, deep in a secret corner of her soul that meant it if she said she’d be at your birthday party or bring you a donut. The part that treated promises like promises.
There was only one way to cleanse herself, and remove her shame. She knew what it was, but she was afraid. Kara had battled monsters and gods, faced death more than once, lost more than any person should have to lose in a dozen lifetimes, but there was one thing she feared above all others.
She feared that first honest look on Lena’s shocked face more than she feared an eternity without stars. She could live in the void between realities; a void without Lena would kill her more surely than any green poison.
Now. She had to do it now, before she lost her nerve. She flew back to the city, flew hard, slowing only to land on Lena’s balcony, softly. As she raised her hand to knock on the glass of the door, she hesitated, nearly turned back.
Lena opened it, and Kara let out a slow breath. Lena was wearing only a loose, flowing floral robe, with clearly nothing beneath it. Terror made her listen- if Lena had a guest in that state, Kara might just fling herself into the sun and be done with it.
She was alone. Lena shifted on her feet.
“Why are you all wet?”
Kara’s hair was damp with sea spray and she’d flown through a few clouds on her way back.
“I like to fly over the ocean and think.”
“Well, come in here already. Let me get you a towel. Do you want something to change into?”
Kara swallowed hard. No. She wanted the honor of her family on her chest right now. She needed it to make her brave, like her father said it would when he sent her into the void. She did take the towel.
Lena had been enjoying her tea and sad breakfast -toast with jam- before Kara arrived. She left it on the counter and sat on her couch, leaving Kara to pace.
“I can tell you’re upset,” said Lena. “Tell me what’s wrong.”
“Everything,” said Kara. “I have a lot to say and I don’t know how to say it. I haven’t told you the full truth and I have to. I need to. It’s eating me alive inside.”
Lena swallowed hard, her heart racing.
“Please don’t tell me you’re Batman, too.”
“Lena, this is serious.”
Kara swept across the room and knelt in front of her, and Lena’s eyes shot open wide in surprise. Kara looked at the carpet in front of her, unable to look Lena in the eye.
“A long time ago, I promised you I’d always take care of you, and I didn’t. I was lying to you when I said it and I lied to you for years after.”
“Kara…”
“Please,” desperation choked her voice, “let me finish. I owe you the full truth. I promised, and promises are sacred to Kryptonians. My soul will be stained forever unless I fulfill the oath I made.”
“It wasn’t that big of a deal.”
“Yes it was,” said Kara. “It was to me. It was everything to me. Please.”
Lena cleared her throat. “Okay.”
“I told you I lied to you to protect you. That was another lie. That’s not why I did it. I lied because I was weak and I put my own feelings ahead of doing what was right. I was scared. I was scared that if you knew it would change how you saw me and it would change our relationship. You were the only person I could almost be myself with and I didn’t want that to change. You were a safe person I could go to without having to be Supergirl.”
Lena was studying her, a soft hint of skepticism in her expression.
Kara stood up and paced.
“I don’t know how to do this, Lena. I may act human and look human but I’m not. I grew up on another planet with another culture and so many things about this world are just totally different from how I was raised.”
Kara took a deep breath.
“On Krypton we didn’t have queerness. People didn’t value freedom of choice. You did what society told you to do. You joined the guild you were pledge to at birth and married the person you were told to marry and had the offspring you were told to have and raised them to do the same thing. The same fucking thing.”
Lena sat up at Kara’s sudden, vehement profanity.
“I didn’t know the word freedom until I arrived here. I had no concept of it. I had no idea how fragile and precious it is. Sure, I talked about it and wrote essays about it in school, but I didn’t get it. Not until I met you.”
Kara looked at Lena.
“You are my freedom. You’re the first thing I’ve ever chosen, really chosen, in my life, besides being Supergirl. It was you that made me look Cat Grant and Alex both in the eyes and say ‘no, this is what I want, this is how it’s going to be for me and it’s my choice, not yours.’ Back home I never, ever would have even thought what I’m about to say now.”
Kara swallowed, hard.
“I was afraid to tell you because I was afraid it would change our relationship. I was afraid you’d hate me because I kept the secret too long, but I was also afraid of what has to come after confessing my identity to you, Lena. The next part is even harder.”
“Kara,” Lena began.
“I have feelings for you.”
Lena went still, her eyes wide. “What did you say?”
“I want to be myself with you. My whole self, my real self. Not the person I think I have to be to please someone else. I want to tell you everything you want to know about my home and my people and my life and I want to know everything about you. I want to hear you laugh for me and see the look in your eyes when you’re happy to see me. I want to care for you when you’re sick and hold you when you’re sad and be the person that matters to you like you matter to me.”
Kara sucked in a deep breath.
“I used to think I was happy just being Kara with you. Not being Kara Danvers or Kara Zoe-El, just me… but I’m not me without both of those pieces and being without them isn’t good enough. I want you to know the real me. The girl from Krypton who went to high school in California.”
Lena stood up slowly, clearly forcing her breathing even. She adjusted her robe around herself, and looked at Kara for too long a time, silent.
“I hurt you when I promised I’d protect you and I’ll never forgive myself for that.”
“What do you want from me? To tell you it’s okay?” said Lena. “Is that what you want? Because it’s fucking not.”
Kara flinched. She opened her mouth, then closed it.
Lena had given her this courtesy and she’d give it in return.
“It wasn’t just you, Kara. I built my whole life around you and your friends and they became my friends. You gave me a normal world. I got to be a regular girl when I was with you and the others. Do you have any idea what that means to me? What you did to me when you ripped it away? Do you have any idea how you’ve torn me to shreds?”
Kara choked a little, and tried to hold back the tears, and failed.
“I killed Lex. I killed him and I hid his body, myself. I killed my brother for you. And the worst part is I’d do it again. If it was him or you I’d kill him again.”
Cold dread flooded through her.
“That was my fault. That was exactly the kind of thing that I should have protected you from, and I failed you." Kara's breath hitched as she bit back a sob. "I should go."
Lena moved quickly and grabbed her arm tight. "Don't you fucking dare leave. You can't just say those things to me and leave."
Kara's nostrils flared as she sucked in a big breath.
"Lex told me who you were as he was dying. He showed me."
Kara looked at her. "Oh."
"I started to hate you. I started to believe the things he said about you. And what happened then? You told me! You just blurted it out!"
Lena choked down a sob of her own, and something in Kara shattered. Tentatively, carefully, Kara pulled her into a gentle hug, and Lena let her.
"I don't know what to do anymore," Lena whispered into Kara's chest. "I've lost everything."
Kara held her closer, breathing the soft scent of her shower-damp hair.
"I don't know what to do either," Kara admitted. "I just knew I couldn't bear to lie to you again, even by omission. I'll go if you want."
"You're not leaving," said Lena. "I don't want you to go. Promise you won't leave me."
Kara shivered. "Lena…"
"Promise."
"I promise," Kara whispered.

the argo trials: argo city
I, unsurprisingly, spent a whole lot of time wondering how tf does argo city is mapped out so here's what I came up with:
Following the headcanon I created in the third chapter about Kryptonians liking circles and since Argo city is basically a big circle, this is the layout:
Tumblr media
The main circle is the square, where people buy trinkets from the artisans guild and books from the science guild, among other things.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The second circle are the guilds. One building for each guild. And behind each of the guilds, in the third circle, are the houses of the people belonging to that guild.
Couples go to the "neighborhood" of the person with the highest ranking family name (which is why the Els are always in the science guild sector, even when Alura was living alone in it and she belongs to the lawmakers guild).
Also!!!! I was sooooo annoyed when I realized that Argo City has no mountains and since it's a fucking dome it wouldn't really have natural weather so I was like "where tf did that lake that's in the show comes from?", especially because it's a flying rock on space so it shouldn't have enough space for underground water AND the rocks outside (and by relation the rocks Below) are filled with kryptonite and that would make everyone sick even if there Is water underground. But we're gonna be delulu and smile and nod when I said there's underground water that gets filtered by the science guild :)

Jor-El is almost always framed as this older man, with at least some salt-and-pepper hair going on to highlight his age and wisdom, but the more I think about it, the more I want to see a young Jor-El.
Like imagine Clark building/going to the Fortress for the first time, and he’s in his early-mid twenties, and he sees the Jor-El hologram. Clark sees himself just after graduation.
And Jor-El, he’s brilliant, sure, but the scientists’ guild on Krypton doesn’t listen to his warnings cause they see him as a kid. And he can’t even put together a good argument because he hasn’t been taught to make one to the guild yet and he can’t keep his emotions in check when he tries and just sounds hysterical.
Or maybe they play it the way they did in My Adventures with Superman, where Clark hasn’t even hit double digits yet and sees this overwhelming, domineering figure and is terrified. Then he goes back years later and that menacing, war-hardened face is actually just as scared and inexperienced as he is.
And whatever knowledge is embedded in the Fortress and the AI comes out sounding wise and omniscient cause that’s how it’s supposed to be delivered, but words that actually come from Jor-El, his hopes and dreams for his son, his depiction of Krypton’s end, they’re all filled with emotion and character and little verbal and physical tics and habits that make it so much clearer to Clark that there’s no grand plan. He wasn’t sent to Earth to save it or conquer it or teach them.
He was sent to live, by a terrified young man who just wanted to give his son the chance to do so.

My real angsty Kryptonian culture headcanon is that if Clark wasn't raised speaking krytonian and only learned it later, of their generation (the last generation of krypton) Kara would technically be the last true native speaker
From what I understand, a language is considered a dead language either when it's no longer spoken in everyday (non-academic) contexts or when it's last native speaker dies
So I'm just imagining Kara finding out Lois is pregnant and half begging Clark if she can teach Jon krytonian as he grows up so he's raised bilingual and their language won't die with her
Something about someone learning/teaching a language for the next generation’s sake always gets me.
I also like to think Bruce quietly teaches Kryptonian to all of his kids so that Clark and his children/family have someone to speak to when he’s gone.

Have you ever thought about making Clark or Connor look more extraterrestrial or having Connor go through a part of Kryptonian puberty that even Lex was completely unaware of for angst or?
You've been many to ask this so... here we go!
Tumblr media
Since Krypton was under a red sun, I made the assumption that most of the planet's fauna would be in shades of blue or white to better absorb the light. As for the photosynthesis ability, I thought making Kryptonians reptiles would make sense. And also because dragons. I like dragons.
Since in my headcanons Krypton's mass was heavier than earth, most of the Kryptonians who were raised on their home planet were more muscular and would tend to walk more often on four legs rather than two which made their back slightly bent like the drawing I made below. But Clark being raised from a very young age on a planet with a lighter mass, he would be thinner, his back straight and perfectly bipedal.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Their "hair" would actually be proto feathers who shimmer like crystals so they can hide in their environment (mostly crystal mountains and forests). Most of the time, their horns are the only way to determine males from females (bigger for the males) because they have a similar build.
I'll answer about Hybrid Conner in another ask because I lack the space here.
Bonus: Martha loving her baby despite his alien appearance.

a tuppence for your bi4bi Clois thoughts 🪙... I'm luv them so much and I'd love to hear if you have any specific headcanons about them 🥺
YESSSS!!! i DO have some thoughts. i love them,
generally i think lois has her bisexuality figured out by the time she's in her mid-20s. she and cat grant have had some rage-filled makeouts on at least one occasion, but an actual relationship would never in a million years work out between them. they respect each other but do not see eye to eye nearly enough. she never bothered to come out to her father, but just knows it's one more thing about her that he'd hate.
clark, by contrast, does Not have it figured out. he has spent his entire life repressing every single thought, feeling, and ability that set him apart from the classic good all-american boy because he had to fit in. and being superman, exploring his kryptonian heritage, etc., has helped, of course, but he is still. so repressed. he has no idea that he's ever experienced attraction to guys before. he's got some internalized homophobia to work through, about himself. He Has To Be Normal. so as far as he's concerned, there was lana, and then there was lois.
to me, clark's journey toward self-acceptance is very intrinsically tied to his family. there's kara, talking about how sexuality and gender stuff on krypton wasn't like it is on earth, especially in western culture. there's kon, suffering through his own repression and depression and trying to pretend he's fine. there's chris and jon, both too young to fully grasp it all (probably), who make clark incredibly aware of every step he makes in terms of parenting them.
so one day, after kon's finally come out to the family, and kara's muddled through trying to figure out earth labels that she's comfortable with, the two of them decide they wanna go to pride, and ask lois and clark if they want to make it a family affair. lois says hell yeah, and clark says yes of course he's happy to support them! and jon says YAY, GLITTER!! CAN I GET STICKERS? and chris says if you get glitter all over my nintendo ds again i will punt you into the ocean, baby brother or not.
and there's just this innocuous moment while they're out when kon goes "here i got you these!" and hands lois and clark two simple lil heart-shaped bi flag buttons. and lois is like aw thanks squirt! and ruffles kon's hair. clark meanwhile goes oh i think there's been a misunderstanding... ... . . . .. . .. .. . or. has there?
and that night he's just sitting on the edge of the bed holding this tiny like $3 button in his hands having a whole crisis. lois hooks her chin over his shoulder and asks what's wrong? and he's like. lois i'm not. i'm. except maybe i'm not not. but i don't know, i thought i... i never thought i could think about it. clark kent is supposed to be normal. i... i'm already an alien, lois, i thought i was already set apart enough, and if i'm... if i'm this, even when i'm clark, not superman, then... then...
and lois digs her matching little $3 bi flag heart button out of her purse and bumps it against his and says, even if you are queer, you're still not alone. and then clark gives her the patented kent family big soft puppy-dog eyes. that night, he falls asleep in her arms with his head tucked snugly under her chin. it's where he feels safest.
but the next year, he lets kara get him a flag, and lets kon tie it around his shoulders like a cape. and he's here as clark kent, but it's kind of funny when he looks at his shadow. because he might not be superman right now, but the silhouette still looks the same.

Ok but Krypton!lives au but clark isn't some jerk alien prince, he is a brat no doubt but he's also just so oblivious to everything. Have some of my headcanons for this:
•I imagine it starting with kal el dropping down on Kansas farm [grown up and shit] being found by the Kents as they patch him up and take him down on the guest room, he wakes up freaks out a bit speaking in kryptonian and just floating around the house being overly careful of everything, ma and pa kent are confused and so is Kal, he tries to communicate with them and they finally find a common ground and after a month clark finally learns the human language.
•zod has managed to exile kal from his home planet, suffice to say kal el is currently heartbroken and looking for help
•Kal just saw some random pair of glasses and thought they were so cool so now he just wears them whenever he's in casual clothes but is in no way trying to hide his identity, people are just that dumb.
•Does not get social cues at all and will unwillingly say the wrong thing at the wrong time, he's just a happy little guy who wants to explore this strange planet and then go home
•he particularly likes rock music despite his personality, he finds hardcore metal music soothing
•he once tried to eat Batman's ears, in his defence they looked edible to him,
•Diana loves to fill in kal with false information about the human race, kal is not stupid enough to belive them but follows them anyways just because he thinks it would be funny
•Bruce has a very subtle crush on him and kal notices this immediately, he's confused as to why Bruce pretends to hate him
•The whole league [escpically bruce] is overprotective of him, lex Luthor doesn't stand a fucking chance
•Kal el has no filter and will call you out with a bright innocent smile and float away moving on with his day
•Kal lives in the watchtower only visiting earth for league business, he rarely works alone
•he floats near the Zeta tubes almost everyday hoping to see bruce and when he's not there he's disappointed
• he refuses to walk, he thinks he's done enough walking for a life time and bruce has to tug on kal's cape to make sure he isn't floating above his seat
•he is way more capable of communicating his emotions in kryptonian then in English, he will switch to kryptonian when he's ranting or angry
•Diana and Barry are the ones who suggest he make a civilian identity, and thus is born reporter clark kent.
•He still visits the Kents here and then bringing them souvenirs from space
•Does not understand when someone is flirting with him but will bring bruce random animals he finds in the wild as gifts because "I heard from Jason you like adopting tiny lonely beings"
•he's still pretty good at hiding his identity somehow and at this point as learned all social cues and slang thanks to lois
•yet he still decides to fuck with the league, he gives batman forehead kisses, he once called green lantern a thot ["does that not mean thoughtful?"] And will very knowingly insult anyone who even looks at his loved ones the wrong way
•while bruce is more open of his protectiveness [and possessiveness] of clark, Clark himself is more subtle and quiet about it, but not forgetting he's still technically a spoiled prince of Krypton cannot share. He snatches bruce and gets pouty whenever bruce is talking or flirting with anybody else
•it takes them five years to get together but it finally happenes and they start dating
•the kryptonians finally find clark and force him to go with them but clark now refuses even if his exile is over.
•unfortunately he really can't leave his planet behind and has to leave [he and bruce have a long sad conversation and clark breaks down]
•A month later bruce is handling another team meeting when Clark finally comes back
•he offically leaves Krypton to his older cousin Kara and moves in with bruce
•his favourite movies are the James bond movies
•The batfam all adore him
•Basically I want a Au of sweet innocent clark that's oblivious to innuendos and shit while bruce suffers in silence and the evolves into clark being a little shit who pretends he doesn't know what he's doing when pulls bruce close and whispers in his ear about smth knowing damm well he's doing things to Bruce.
Also-
Diana: Batman if your done fighting with your boyfriend, we need to leave
Batman: wha- kal is NOT my boyfriend!
Kal: (has only be in earth for a year) I'm not?
Batman: I-
Kal: Am I not your friend?
Batman: no kal I never said-
Kal: am I not a boy?
*jla snickering in the back*

Huh, I thought that the headcanon that kryptonite is basically ectoplasmicly imbued chunks of krypton and the Supers aren't actually weak to the specific physical radiation but the psychic radiation of the screams of the dying planet was a bit more widespread. But just monches space rock bcs he can is funny. Thanks for humoring my ask(s)!
Now that you mention it I might have heard at least a SIMILAR headcanon to that before, but it was a little while ago and I totally forgot about it, hah. I've definitely seen people talking about Danny eating kryptonite around, I just never really knew where it came from.
( also, technically unrelated, but one day someone out there needs to explain to me why Kon and Jon are both apparently as weak to kryptonite as the other Supers, because they're not purely Kryptonian and also NOT EVEN FROM KRYPTON!! that shit should only work on Clark and Kara and Krypto, as far as I'm concerned, hahaha! nobody else! nobody else at all! not even Power Girl, because it's not HER Krypton!! BUT SOMEHOW IT CANONICALLY WORKED ON KON EVEN BEFORE HIS DNA-RETCON?? why and H O W ? ? ? ? )

I didn't think I'd do this again but
Headcanons//Theories about Kryptonian Biology:
you know how there's like, this sea slug that looks like a sheep? and it eats algae that can photosynthesize, but it keeps the enzymes (idk if that's what they're called) that can ""eat the sunlight""?
HEAR ME OUT-- what if that's kinda what a kryptonian does when they get under the yellow sun?? i got three theories to that:
all kryptonians have these thingies, but they only work on yellow sun aka our sun and not on krypton's sun, hence why they didn't have powers there
Jor-El, when sending both Kal and Kara to Earth, injected sunlight eating enzyme thingies on their cells so they could survive for longer without resources (in space and all) and it mostly works on yellow sunlight
I like the first option better but whatever, until DC drops something to make me deny it, this is my headcanon

Hi! Sorry to bother you but I saw you were a fellow Clark lover and I feel like you were a great person to ask this question to: In your opinion, what traditions/culture things from Krypton does Clark do in his daily life? Ex, could be a small Kryptonian prayer before eating or a specific holiday, etc Clark in my opinion would do everything he can to keep his heritage alive so I was curious what your take on it was :)
hi!! you’re not bothering me, i take every opportunity i get to run my mouth about clark :) you made my day
first thing’s first, i believe clark has some instincual and natural kryptonian things that he does that he either was told wasn’t normal by his parents, or things that he’s done mostly in private for a majority of his life so therefore he has no idea that it’s not normal.
One thing i headcanon he does is bump his head to other people’s heads as a form of affection like if he likes you he’ll put his forehead on yours. im leaning into the kryptonians are like cats thing, i love that. obviously he doesn’t do this with everyone as to keep up appearances, but he does it with ma and pa and the league. Kyrptonians are a very physically affectionate people
Another thing he can do but doesn’t because it’s definitely NOT human, is clicking (similar to a raven), it’s a sound that comes from deep in his body tho so it’s not super loud and only really noticeable in a quiet room or if you’re sitting right next to him, he can control it for the most part but sometimes it happens without his consent when he’s particularly frustrated abt something.
Uuhmm oh i also like to think everything on earth tastes completely different to him, like pickles are like ghost peppers to him and marshmallows taste like cilantro or somethin. as a baby the jarred baby food always made him pull a face and spit it out and now there’s these two panicked parents completely lost on how and what to feed this alien baby. mashed up raw onions and bell peppers were like candy to him and his parents just had to hope that it wasn’t bad for him. stuff like that. he’s physically repulsed by cheese, all of it. the smell alone makes him want to vomit. (i know this clashes with my headcannon that he’s an amazing cook and makes the best meals, but that’s just a process of following the recipe and knowing how to do it cause ma taught him how, as well as all her special recipes, so to him it’s just a routine.)
i have more somewhere in my head but they’re not comin to me rn. i really gotta draw out my versions of kryptonians because i really do like to lean in to the fact that they are aliens and should look and feel a little more like it yaknow?
okay, traditions and keeping his culture alive stuff let’s see
he wears the traditional kryptonian fits on special kryptonian holidays as well as father’s day. There’s a holiday that celebrates animal companionship (pets basically) and every leaguer agrees that it’s absolutely criminal it’s not a real national holiday on earth. The league celebrates every year.
kryptonian birthday’s work a bit differently, for the entire day your eyes glow and instead of recieving gifts and having a party, the person who’s birthday it was gets an entire day to themselves, no work or anything, they just get to relax and do whatever they want, a birthday was a day of celebration of course with loved ones but the custom applied to work and such, if it was your birthday, you were allowed to do whatever you wanted that day free of charge so long as it wasn’t illegal obviously, this was customary on Krypton because a birthday was considered a very important day, in a different way that’s it’s considered on earth. Bruce does everything in his power to take all work load off of Clark every year after hearing Clark talk abt kryptonian birthday’s once, and Bruce being fully aware of how important keeping krypton alive is to Clark even if it is in small seemingly pointless ways, he does that. Much to Clark’s dismay, Bruce practically forces him to take the day off and offers to pay for literally anything he wants to do that day. Usually Clark just wants to spend time with friends and family.
honestly my brain can’t think of many more or very interesting ones, i’m sure they’re in there but my mind is dead right now, but i hope you enjoy those

One of the things I have deeply headcanoned (and runs around in my daydreams, albeit doesn't translate to fic very well, so I wouldn't write it) is that Kara has immense musical talent (rather than being a painter).
We see Kara sing on the show, and that's mostly because they wanted to take advantage of Melissa Benoist's beautiful voice. But I also think Kara would have fantastic ability to pick up new instruments, play music perfectly on the first try, compose complex pieces.
I like to imagine that Zor-El was like this, too. Pre-Krypton-explosion, she was scampering around in his lab all the time as he fostered her curiosity for science, and they'd play music in the evenings. Music theory is pretty mathematical, and they'd be naturals.
The line between science and art is much fuzzier than people believe anyway.
Maybe they spent some of their boredom time in the Phantom Zone trying to come up with songs and compositions, finding some morale in the act of creation, knowing that it was the only thing they really had for sanity in the face of a dark eternity. Because what is personhood (or what we'd call humanity) without the gift of creation?
And she'd sing and play for Lena when she got back. It'd be something private at first - Kara might be playing in the Tower (which inexplicably has a piano) when she thinks no one is there, and not notice when someone comes in - she's too lost in the memories of being trapped in the Phantom Zone, working through processing those old feelings of unending hopelessness. She's... not very good at processing trauma.
But Lena overhears? She asks what the piece is, and slowly Kara starts opening up about it, about surviving the Phantom Zone, about the nightmares that still haunt her in the aftermath. It becomes a way for Kara to open up, another avenue for them to grow close.
Some people imagine Kara painting Lena, and I absolutely adore the art pieces I've seen floating around of this. I like to think she composes music for her, too.

Clark for the headcanon meme! :D
:D
Headcanon A:  realistic
Clark loves the farm. He does not want to be a farmer. This is a source of tension as the Kents grow older, because of course no one wants to lose the family land, and the likelihood of some kid springing up out of nowhere with a passion for animal husbandry and wheat cultivation is.... low. Not impossible! But low.
Headcanon B: while it may not be realistic it is hilarious
Clark is a horrible cook. He is capable of microwaving canned ravioli and making instant mac and that is about it. Luckily his body does not actually require physical nutrients because he eats like a college freshman encountering a kitchen for the first time. His sense of taste also doesn't quite line up with human-normal, which means that sometimes he doesn't bother microwaving the canned ravioli and just eats the can. What? There's no one to see him do it. He likes the crunch.
Headcanon C: heart-crushing and awful, but fun to inflict on friends
Clark spends a lot of time down in the Fortress scanning through the data banks. Nearly everything he learns is something that might otherwise fade into obscurity. (Kara was a teen when Krypton was destroyed; she was a smart kid, but she grew up in a world that was actively falling to pieces around her. And how much does your average teen know about governance structures and historiography?)
It feels like poking at a wound, to learn these things that no one else alive knows, that presumably thousands and millions of scientists and doctors and scholars had argued over for centuries. There's a great deal of data about logistics, agriculture, history, engineering, politics. But he can't find anything about what an average apartment would have looked like, or what kind of toys babies played with. He doesn't know how his parents would have dressed him, if there would have been a baby shower, if they would have put him in a crib or strapped him to their chests. He should ask Kara, but he doesn't.
Headcanon D: unrealistic, but I will disregard canon about it because I reject canon reality and substitute my own.
Kryptonian genitals are based on a manifestation of your will. Because of being raised in your standard cisnormative cultural soup, Clark does not figure this out until he is about 26. He spent his entire teens terrified that puberty would bring out something noticeably alien in him, and so he has the world's Most Average Dick. And then he starts idly fantasizing about Bruce railing him and is deeply betrayed when his junk starts... changing?
Cue the world's weirdest conversation with his cousin.
Clark: what is happening to me? Am I going to start laying eggs?
Kara, dubiously: I mean do you want to lay eggs?? I guess you could if you wanted to. Seems kind of weird to me, I just kept the standard assortment of tentacles, but I don't know what humans think is normal. I mean, there's nothing wrong with eggs if you want eggs. Just not my thing.
Clark: I don't want eggs!
Kara: Geez, okay, you don't have to have eggs then. No need to bite my head off.
(she is trying to be supportive of her cousin and his attempt to work through his weird human hangups! however she wishes he'd ask Kelex these questions. I mean, honestly. eggs.)

the argo trials: food
Quick summary of what I found on krypton's food: basically nothing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tumblr media
"Kvornish tri-snout" is the only meal with a name I could find, it's from Supergirl (2016) issue 7.
There's a bunch of comics that are set on Krypton or have memories of Krypton but unfortunately, none of them really show them eating. So, I've taken the liberty of making shit up.
Tumblr media
By this old map of Krypton we can tell it has a "Great Krypton Sea" and a few rivers and lakes, because of that it's likely that they had a lot of sea animals. Fish would be a big part of their food.
And, because of the "Scarlet Jungle", they'd have at least some animals like snagriffs, rondors, hounds, moles and more, as mentioned here. As well as different plants, herbs and fruits that they would be able to cook with.
Tumblr media
So basically, I think in the good old days before Krypton started to decay, their food would be based on meat and plants. Later on, when they started to use up their resources, they had to find a way to eat with more artificial foods, kinda like energy bars with the amount of nutrients necessary for the day, and resort to off-world foods (which we know that Kryptonians had relations, at least to visit, with other words because of this:
Tumblr media
So trades for food are not unlikely.)
As for the argo trials:
I made up Khulufehk which is basically soup (because we know our girl Kara is canonically not a good cook). Khuluf means warm and ehk means water. (thank you kryptonian.info)
PS: if you do know of any comic or ep of a DC show that mentions any Kryptonian food and you tell me, I'll love you forever

Another thing surprisingly under-used in the broader set of fanon and canon:
Is the very reality of the first Despair's murder, how that came about, and the impact that would have had on the Endless. Prior to it the only real challenges would have been Death walking out and Delight growing into Delirium and showing that one of them, at least, can stop being an Endless even temporarily (which Death also does once a century and will one day do entirely). Delight to Delirium shows if they really wanted to they could grow and evolve as mortals do, if at a fairly steep price.
And then one day Despair is just murdered and someone else replaces her. Prior to that I can see that all of the Endless save perhaps Death would have seen themselves as immortal. And then in one fell swoop all of this changed. The reality that something killed an idea and devoted the time and effort to do so, and made it work, has its own mythical element.
In my own stories how and why this happens is a fundamental aspect of the mythos, and it comes in two kinds. In one it is an entity of myth wanting vengeance on Desire by destroying that which Desire values most, which winds up being their twin. In the other it's a man of Krypton, the umpty great-great-great grandfather of General Zod, who finds out about the bargain that doomed his world and his entire species and takes up a Muspell-blade and does the deed.
Given Sandman's overlap with Norse mythology in different aspects, I use the Muspell-blade as a nod to that and to the idea that the Muspelli are slayers of gods and of worlds alike. And what better weapon to make an endless end, the infinite finite, than a mythological weapon calculated for precisely that kind of purpose devised by beings capable of such a thing?
This is, of course, purely my own take on the weapon, the person who does so matters just as much.
For that matter, there are entire sets of fics that can be done here and some excellent ones have been done on AO3 involving the murder of Despair and what that did to Desire. There are also ones that can be there for Death and Despair talking during that moment. How would Death feel the first time one of her siblings truly died? What did it mean for the rest of the family and for their own changes over time?
I don't think Neil's ever going to answer this question directly and I think at this Doylist level it's a question that should never be answered, for the reader's imagination in various ways will be richer than anything the canon could come up with to answer it.
For that matter, how did Despair take her second form? What happened to Despair's murderer? There is one headcanon I like and use in one case where the murderer became the new Despair and suffers eternally in the body of the new Despair, looking behind her eyes. If not that, then what? A soul in Hell? Someone caught somewhere in the broader elements of both the Sandman/Vertigo side of the DC cosmology or the broader aspects of it?
The murder of Despair is one of these very mythical aspects that also works as a thing of both old and new mythologies alike. Somewhere, in the past, a being found a way to permanently kill an Endless, even if something else replaced the destroyed point of view. What happened with that? What is the impact on an infinite being with immortality if the immortal proves mortal and the infinite finite?
And yet with all this element, rich in itself, fanon and canon and fanfic largely neglect this mine except in the narrow set of stories specifically focused on Desire, where Despair, of course, is a vital character for she and Desire have arguably a healthier sibling relationship than Death and Dream, which is why it's a pity they get seen so little with this in canon. The show made it even warmer and this is one of the areas where it fully improved on the comic.

2 & 11 :)
2. a headcanon you weren't sure about at first but have come to like! Rojarias, mostly because it never occurred to me since they never interacted on screen. But then I thought about it, read fics that show it, and wrote it myself. And now I really like it. 11. if you're a writer or artist, what fic or piece of art are you proud of making? For writing? Depends on fandom and I can't decide between the two as for which I'm more proud of... For Korrasami, I'm proud of my Shared Moments AU, where I did a lot of research and plotting to rewrite TLOK starting in Book 2 with a focus on Asami Sato and Korra's relationship. This morphed into a longer series to show the ripple effects, but it's my longest work to date, and I'm proud of it. It's been great practice for writing novels in a series, considering how many words this behemoth is. lol For Supergirl, I feel like my Unraveling Realities fic because of all the research that has gone into that fic. I researched the heck out of Krypton, Kryptonian language, Ireland, Irish mythology, Druidism and their magic, Argentinian slang (for Andrea), and the Irish language itself. I wanted to explore what it meant for Lena to have magic in depth and how that impacts her identity and self worth and relationships. (I use Sam as a mirror of sorts for this tale.) Confessions is the fic that leads into this one, where Lena first discovers her magic while saving Kara. The series is all about identity, healing, and redemption. I also pushed myself in this fic to try a new writing technique that I've seen done in published speculative novels: where one POV chapter is in present tense but the next (different POV) chapter is in past tense. It's such a unique way to tell a story, so I decided to employ it for this fic. I feel like it's worked far better than I expected!
For art? I'm damn proud of this recent piece, where I was practicing drawing Lena. I used color only on her eyes, they are green, but not sure if that shows up well.

Thank you for asking these questions! It was fun to think about this. :)

My longtime Kryptonian headcanons matches your hair and eye color one!
The first headcanon is that Clark's hair genuinely has the blue tint that comics traditionally used to put highlights on black. I think it'd be subtle enough and when it isn't he'd wear hats.
The second is weirder: canonically, Superman's eyes sometimes glow red before he's angry, and at other times he shoots lasers without anyone seeing. Then there's the fact that there are creatures on Krypton with screens on their face. So I think bioluminescence evolved very early on Krypton, and Kryptonians emote partially through changing eye color. Clark's expressions would be considered very subdued by Kryptonian standards because he never saw any examples to follow, so it's just some pretty instinctive emoting like the red eyes as a warning, and bluer eyes when he cuts loose (this rewrites an earlier canon idea, that Clark's eye color is unusually blue and he uses the glasses to dull them).
Holy shit, we do have the same headcanons!
I actually started writing a bit about Krypton and Kryptonian biology and it's very close to what you just explained here! I think that's so neat!
Except for the eye changing color one, but I admit it is really good! I love it! Nice work, there!
