I like to think that after years of having to raise Tails from a super genius little kid to a slightly bigger super genius little kid, that Sonic just always has mint candies on him now.

He doesn't really like them but it's become habit to keep a few on hand from years of wanting to reward Tails with a treat or having to bribe Tails to listen to him when Tails had his very rare moments of acting his age tantrums. Buying them bulk was cheap and they were a pair of homeless kids and Tails loves them so he just auto buys some whenever he hits a new town, even if Tails isn't with him it's just habit at this point.

But now because he's so used to having them and giving them out, in any situation that someone does something cool or they're just on the way back from a mission, doesn't matter who it is he just auto hands them a mint. Doesn't even think about it just walks by and gives them a mint (He give Tails two cause that's his little bro' he deserves one more than everyone else)
