Today we remember author Ann Crispin on what would have been her 73rd birthday. Ann is best known to the Star Wars fandom for penning The Han Solo Trilogy, Lucasfilm's first official origin of the Galaxy's #1 scoundrel, an epic tapestry interweaving film and Expanded Universe.

Ann also wrote two anthologized short stories: "Play It Again, Figrin D'an" for Tales from the Mos Eisley Cantina; and "Skin Deep: The Fat Dancer's Tale" for Tales from Jabba's Palace, in which she subverted body shaming inherent in Return Of The Jedi's end credits and beyond.

Throughout her award-winning and bestselling career, Ann was an advocate for aspiring and career writers alike. She taught courses; co-founded Writer Beware, the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America's scam watchdog committee; and served as SWFA's Vice President.

The world lost Ann C. Crispin ten years ago after a prolonged struggle with cancer. She is survived by family and friends, and by the impact of her voice.

For all my writing friends, I offer to you an excerpt from the Turkey City Lexicon, and one of my absolute favorites, so I’ve probably already forgotten that I’ve posted about it before but I’m going to do it again:

Eyeball Kick

Vivid, telling details that create a kaleidoscopic effect of swarming visual imagery against a baroquely elaborate SF background. One ideal of cyberpunk SF was to create a “crammed prose” full of “eyeball kicks.” (Attr. Rudy Rucker)

I sprinted down the hall of a hotel on Taris. First order soldiers where shouting behind me as I turned a corner crashing into something. I fell forward on somthing hard with a loud thud. I leaned back gazed down to see a man laying under me smirking.

The man has dark curls and brown eyes. He was wearing a white dress shirt and black dress pants with a gun holstered across the left of his body. His hands where holding the curve of my back gently, my legs either side of his hips. I pushed myself up so I was sitting on his lap with my hands on his chest. I can feel his muscle through his tight white dress shirt, his hands moving up my back gripping above my ass but below my ribs. My black curls flowing down my shoulders.

“Hi!” I smiled but before I could continue two first order soilders rounded the corner.

“Put your hands up”

As they pointed there guns towards us the man flipped me and pulled a gun out of its holster and fired two shoots directly into each soldiers head, their bodies hitting the ground.

The man turned to face me again, his left hand next to my head holding himself up, one knee between my legs and his other on the outside of my legs. He holstered his gun, his eyes running over my body.

“I’m Poe, nice to meet you” the man smiled.

“Thanks for that but I really didn’t need your help” I said pushing him off me. I stood up and straighted out my clothes. Poe stood up behind me, I turned to him and winked “see you around Poe”

Dischism - The unwitting intrusion of the author’s physical surroundings, or the author’s own mental state, into the text of the story. Authors who smoke or drink while writing often drown or choke their characters with an endless supply of booze and cigs. In subtler forms of the Dischism, the characters complain of their confusion and indecision — when this is actually the author’s condition at the moment of writing, not theirs within the story. “Dischism” is named after the critic who diagnosed this syndrome. Today’s excerpt, brought to you by...me!

This is me, all day, every day.  I apologize to the readers.  My characters are constantly hesitating because I’m hesitating.  Or maybe I’m hesitating because they’re hesitating?  Maybe both?  Anyway, it’s something I have to work on.  The clunking that goes on in the story should all be in the characters’ heads (preferably Max’s and Machigi’s), and not in the action.

(I also propose “Dischasm: when the Dischism is so bad that the reader is thrown completely out of the story and is never able to make it back.)
