Title: Take Me Home Tonight
Author: Morgan Matson
Series or standalone: standalone
Publication year: 2021
Genres: fiction, contemporary, romance, adventure
Blurb: Kat and Stevie - best friends, theatre kids, polar opposites - have snuck away from the suburbs to spend a night in New York City. They have it all planned out - they’ll see a play, eat at the city’s hottest restaurant, and have the best night ever. What could go wrong? Well...kind of a lot? They’re barely off the train before they’re dealing with destroyed phones, family drama, and unexpected Pomeranians. Over the next few hours, they’ll have to grapple with old flames, terrible theatre, and unhelpful cab drivers...but there are also cute boys to kiss, parties to crash, dry-cleaning to deliver (don’t ask), and the world’s best museum to explore. Over the course of a wild night in the city that never sleeps, both Kat and Stevie will get a wake-up call about their friendship and their choices, and finally discover what they really want for their future...that is, assuming they can make it to Grand Central before the clock strikes midnight.

I had a theory that love was about paying attention. It's the one thing you can't buy or fake or make up for at the last minute. So the things that meant the most to me were the little details that told you someone had been paying attention, memorizing your random preferences, letting you know they cared.

“I have a crippling fear of being without a dog.” —Morgan Matson, Take Me Home Tonight •—————————————————————————————• Same, but make it a cat! 🐈💙 Speaking of, me and my kitties are currently snuggled up in the nook watching the rain from a storm that popped up out of nowhere! Usually I love to read when it rains but it’s just been so long since we’ve had rain, I’m content to just watch it and listen to it 😌 •——————————————————————————————• #yalit #yabooks #yafiction #yacontemporary #youngadultbooks #takemehometonight #morganmatson #bookish #bookishpost #bookcommunity #bibliophile #reader #reading #readingforpleasure #readersofinstagram #bookstack #bookspines #beautifulbooks https://www.instagram.com/p/Ch20thUv6At/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Take Me Home Tonight by Morgan Matson
Take Me Home Tonight by Morgan Matson
It doesn’t feel like summer until a Morgan Matson book is released. Matson has been quintessential summer reading for me since Amy and Roger’s Epic Detour (released 2010), when I first discovered the author. She’s had hit after hit with Second Chance Summer, Since You’ve Been Gone, and Save the Date. Take Me Home Tonight is supposed to be a mash up of Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and Nick and Norah’s…

TAKE ME HOME TONIGHT by Morgan Matson is about two girls, one night in NYC and unexpected Pomeranians! We did not expect the Pomeranian. You can expect a lot of fun when reading this new YA novel.

Take Me Home Tonight by Morgan Matson - blurrypetals review
originally posted may 25, 2021 - ★★☆☆☆
I really waffled around over whether I was actually going to DNF this or not. I've read 3 of Matson's other books and 2 of them, Since You've Been Gone and Save the Date, are a couple of my favorite books of all time. This book just didn't have any of Matson's usual charm. Even in her debut, she had some intrigue and drama that drew me in, but the plot of this book just absolutely did not draw me in and life's too short to waste time reading a book you aren't interested in.

Non-Spoiler Book Review | "Take Me Home Tonight," by Morgan Matson
Non-Spoiler Book Review | “Take Me Home Tonight,” by Morgan Matson
Rating: 2.7 out 5 stars LOL, where do I even start? I have a bone to pick with this one. I’ve read three of her books, Since You’ve Been Gone (which is my favorite), The Unexpected Everything (which was okay), and finally, Save the Date (which I didn’t like). This book reminded me of Save the Date in a way, it was unnecessarily long and with too many details that really didn’t need to be in the…

My 4-Star Review
I was excited when I saw that one of the reigning queens of YA contemporary had a new release coming out! So far I had read The Unexpected Everything and Save the Date by Morgan Matson, both of which I really enjoyed, and now I can add Take Me Home Tonight to the list of MM books I’ve read and loved. (Side note: since I am of a certain age (ahem), I cannot pick up or think about this book without immediately singing “Take me home tonight, I don’t wanna let you go til you see the light” in my head -- so thank you to MM for reuniting me with Eddie Money and Ronnie Spector!)
This book felt like a bit of a love letter to drama/theater kids, to New York City, and, kind of like The Unexpected Everything, to being open to unplanned adventures. Kat and Stevie are seniors, best friends since ninth grade, both drama kids who have their (very different) futures planned out. When the casting list for their upcoming play isn’t posted on Friday afternoon as usual, throwing Kat for a loop, and Stevie’s dad bails on her birthday dinner with him, Kat hatches a crazy plan to celebrate Stevie’s birthday and catch their drama teacher’s play on opening night in New York City. They’ve not been to NYC alone before, on their own, so of course they lie to their parents, pulling in a third friend as their alibi, and head off with a plan that allows them to have a great evening and still be back in Connecticut by midnight. Naturally, the plan soon goes by the wayside as basically every. single. thing. that possibly can go wrong does, upending their entire evening and leaving them fighting with one another. Soon they are accidentally separated and each has their own adventures while working through the issues that have come out in their fight.
I love the idea of the power of friendship, especially the bond between girl friends. Both Stevie and Kat end up learning a lot about themselves through the evening’s trials, not least of which is that we cannot always (ever?) plan life down to the smallest details. Each must learn to open their hearts, whether to the possibility of new love, or to step-siblings you want to hate but just can’t, or to broadening your horizons instead of moving forward with laser focus on one possible future. Embarking into adulthood is a scary time, and there is no one better to go through that with than a best friend! But first, Stevie and Kat have to make it through the night, try to find each other again, and see if they can get past their blowout.
I would recommend Take Me Home Tonight to any fan of contemporary, and it will be of particular interest to readers who are/were drama kids themselves and those who love the hustle and bustle of NYC (I readily admit feeling anxious about their travails in the big city, ha!). I just really enjoy the way Morgan Matson tells a story, and how vibrant her characters are. I’ve been so steeped in fantasy lately that it was nice to throw a standalone contemporary into the mix! I hope you’ll pick this one up.
Rating: 4 stars!
