As a longtime user of pretty much exclusively Firefox, duck duck go and tumblr, I’m not used to targeted ads being, well, particularly targeted. Like today I got an ad selling me a 5lb bag of ice. Pretty standard on the ol’ tumbles.

But I used Facebook for the first time in years and my goodness do they have my number when it comes to things I would absolutely consider purchasing. A kindling-cutting drill bit. A 5-gallon bucket lid mousetrap. Like I’m not going to buy these things but that’s out of principle alone.

Going home to Singapore from my Japan vacation tomorrow. And my biggest takeaway from this trip:

Japanese targeted ads are fucking awesome and knows me like a best friend. Like 75% of them were manga previews. Why couldn’t it be like this at Singapore. Just En Ef Tea after En Ef Tea.

Singapore algo: this woman probably is an adventurous investor (wrong) and has lots of money (wrong)

I take great pride in the fact that none of the targeted ads I get on any websites have anything to do with what I actually like or consume. I am unknown and unknowable. The algorithms can't read my mind, and that's just the way I like it.

I ordered some cigars online and now adsense keeps showing me the most generic "rich middle aged man" ads. Luxury watches. Sports cars. A dating app aimed at "succesful older gentlemen"(what chance is there that this isn't something awful). Google. Buddy. You have all this data on me. Last week I was buying ramen in bulk. We both know I didn't start a succesful business, age 20 years, get married and divorced and go bald in the span of a week.

Companies all talk about how these algorithms that feed us content are super sophisticated and smart, to the point that people are getting concerned about them(I'm not saying you shouldn't be, but not for that reason). But once in a while, there comes a moment where what they're actually doing finally clicks, and it is so incredibly stupid.
