the british dust ~ george russell
Tumblr media
Summary: The British dust that looms around the attractive British racer affects even the people who don't believe in it.
Words: 901
Other works: my masterlist
♡♡♡♡♡
Everyone says that British men have a special aura around them. Some might even say there is a thing called 'the British dust'.
You thought it was bullshit.
You never understood the hype around the British men. They were humans just like everyone else, but every single person you came across was of the opinion that they had something special.
Again, you thought that was absolute crap.
Until you met George freaking Russell.
♡♡♡♡♡
Getting a job in F1 has been your dream ever since you could remember.
Your father had always been a fan of racing, watching them every single weekend and even attending a couple of Grands Prix over the years.
When you got a bit older, you started taking an interest in the sport, your father proving to be one hell of a coach who taught you everything there was to know about the sport, the teams, the drivers, the rules.
Going into college, your one true dream was still a job in the F1 industry. A journalist, perhaps, or even a PR manager. Hell, even a janitor would be okay with you as long as you got to go to Grands Prix and meet all of the drivers and see the action in real life every single time.
And, when the opportunity presented itself to become a PR manager at Mercedes, you didn't think twice about taking the job.
Only problem was, you were tasked with being George Russell's manager. The infamous 'British dust' guy.
You didn't think he was that special. Yes, he was hot and one hell of a driver, but you didn't find anything special. He was just another British dude who you had to work with.
"Hello?" George's voice snapped you out of your daydreaming, making you look up at him where he stood in the doorstep of your office.
"Yes, hello. Come in" you stood up and shook his hand, which you found to be incredibly soft and warm, before clearing your throat and motioning for him to take a seat in front of you.
"You've already got an office, that's nice. I only have a small room which could even be classifies as a broom cupboard" he commented, smiling as he looked around your still unpacked and disorganized office.
You laughed and nodded your head, "Yeah, I heard about your rooms. Not the comfiest places on Earth to stay in, I imagine"
"They're the worst. I barely have the space to stretch my legs out and I need the space because I'm tall as a tree" he said, making you laugh out loud.
He was funny, you had to give him that. Unknown to you, he smiled when he heard you laugh, his heart swelling at the sound of your voice.
"I can imagine. Shall we get down to business then?" you asked once you'd finally calmed down.
"If we must, of course" he exhaled, giving you a subtle wink before leaning back and motioning for you to start speaking.
You went through your agenda for the day, explaining the schedule for the media days in the upcoming days and sorting out any issues he'd previously had.
By the end of your meeting, you had warmed up to the famous Brit, his energy and attitude making you feel comfortable and overall giddy on the inside.
"Do you think I'll win this weekend?" he asked as he stood up, making his way towards your door.
"I don't know, perhaps you will, perhaps you won't" you teased, shrugging your shoulders trying to be nonchalant.
"Wanna make a bet?" the twinkle in his eyes should've been a sign for you not to agree with him, but you found yourself nodding your head.
"Do tell"
"If I don't win, I'll grant you access to my media accounts for the rest of the season" he said.
"And if you win?"
"You go on a date with me" he bluntly said, making you freeze.
This would be highly unprofessional, going out with George even if it was for a bet, but something in you told you to say yes.
"You've got yourself a deal, Mr. Russell"
What harm could a date do, right?
♡♡♡♡♡
Damn you, George.
He had actually done it.
He won the race.
You were proud of him, you really were. But the butterflies in your stomach freaking out over the fact that you now had to go on a date with George were sending nerves to every single cell in your body.
You took a moment before stepping out of the Mercedes garage to find George and get the media part covered.
"Congratulations!" you squealed once you met up with him, surprised when he enveloped you in his arms and lifted you off the ground, spinning you around.
"I did it because of you" he whispered as he sat you down, not letting go of you.
"Because of me?" you questioned, your eyebrows scrunching together.
"I couldn't pass up the opportunity to take you out, could I?" he teased, his breath hot on your neck under your ear.
Your body let out an involuntary shudder, which made George laugh and finally release you from the tight and long hug.
"You are one of a kind, George Russell" you commented, but a big smile couldn't be wiped off your face.
"What can I say, the British dust must really be a thing" he winked.
You rolled your eyes and pushed him towards the reporters waiting for interviews with the race winner.
Damn you, British dust.
Damn you, George Russell.

Did Fred even defended him? I only saw him saying the start of the drivers wasn't good
okay so i had made a note to go back and check this & fortunately this reminded me haha
from the f1tv post-race show:
"Sandwiched is the right word. I told the Australian TV that it was more a panini for us but— (laughter) But yeah, uh, what you can do when you are three side by side like this? I think Charlie has no where to go and I understand that Checo had to turn also, uh, Max was close to the curb but, I think there is nobody to blame on this."
i remember watching it live being extremely endeared by fred calling him charlie. i mean, it's not ultra defensive, but it's a pretty neutral / not-slandering-the-home-favorite answer that makes it clear it's not charles' fault.
i did go back to check christian's answer as a comparison because i was curious:
"Yeah I mean look, it was a great shame to lose Checo. He got a great start and good run down to turn one and... You know, Charles, I think you got to call it a racing accident. Three into 1 never goes and Checo was squeezing, Charles had no where to go, and contact was unfortunately made and that was it."
interestingly, very similar. arguably because that is the only logical answer/explanation of what happened. but i mean... christian does say "three into turn one never goes"... and checo was the one who made it three across. and checo is his driver, so there is no reason for him to be as neutral about charles as fred is, for instance.

redbullracing i have been told that my previous caption was not appropriate, so here's a boring pr one scripted by salty spice himself, daniel ricciardo returns to red bull as our reserve driver. it's wonderful to have you back daniel.
view all comments
📍isabellaperez alternate caption was the honey badger is back mother fuckers!! read it and weep!!
user43 i love red bull's admin and their chaos. wonder where christian horner found them.
↳ redbullracing he found me on the streets of monaco and picked me up by the scruff of my neck and told me he had a job for me. who was i to deny salty spice?
↳ danielricciardo you would love her less if you had to see her everday.
↳ maxverstappen1 at least you got a break for a while, i've been suffering for four years
↳ estebanocon you two have it easy, i've been suffering since 2016.
↳ schecoperez i've been told to say that i've been suffering for 19 years.
↳ isabellaperez fuck you guys (except tio checo. i love you)
↳ alexalbon don't worry isa, you're my favorite red bull admin
↳ isabellaperez thank you lily's boyfriend! you're my favorite williams driver!
user07 red bull admin is checo's niece?? plot twist. honestly though, i love her.
christianhorner this is not the caption we talked about isabella.
↳ redbullracing i would say sorry but we both know it's going to happen again. it's been happening for over 4 years.
user92 she's been apart of the team longer than checo? it's kind of iconic. but why red bull and not aston martin when checo was racing with them at the time?
↳ isabellaperez aston martin didn't have a position open and red bull did. it also allowed me to travel with my uncle which i've been doing since 2011, i was only going to stop because the fia demanded it due to covid.
user59 so do you live in monaco or mexico with checo?
↳ isabellaperez used to live in LA but the influencer life was not for me (check out my youtube channel) then i was convinced by my sister and arthur to move to monaco. i travel to mexico all the time, i have to see my mami of course!

BAHRAIN 2023
the youngest mclaren driver stood off to the side, nervous for his first ever formula one grand prix. his teammate seemed less nervous, but still nervous to a certain degree. oscar truly didn't want to fuck this up, not after everything that happened in the last 6 months for him. he noticed a brunette girl staring at him from across the pitlane, she gave him a small wave before turning to go back inside the redbull garage.
the younger brunette turned to look at the slightly older one, "who was that?"
the older one turned to look at him, “you don’t stand a chance. she's checo's niece, very overprotective that man is. not excluding you know, max and daniel. take it from me, i've tried.”
“i asked who she was not if you tried to get her number.”
“oh, i have her number, but i have a girlfriend, you pastry. matter of fact," lando said, "you have her number too."
“it’s piastri! you know this!” oscar shouted as lando skipped, literally skipped, away from him. oscar rolled his eyes at the older drivers actions before turning to go back inside the mclaren garage.
the brunette girl stood outside the redbull garage again, with daniel ricciardo at her side. she turned to look at the empty spot oscar had once been in, then back at daniel, “can't believe i still think he's cute. he's the enemy.”
daniel laughed, "he's not the enemy isa. you're allowed to have a crush on someone."
isabella rolled her eyes, running a hand through her hair, “i hope him the best at shit-claren.”
“isa!”
the girl laughed, “it’s true!”

isabella had been so focused on her phone and texting back the others that she didn’t notice the person coming at her. she crashed into the person and her phone fell to the floor, landing with a loud crack. at least the crack sounded loud to her, but not louder than the ‘mierda’ she let out. she bent down to pick up her phone and so did the person she had bumped into, both reached for her phone, bumping heads.
“fuck,” isabella softly whispered, “you have a hard head,” she told the other person as she rubbed her head.
the person laughed, “guess that’s a good thing for an f1 driver.”
isabella’s eyes slightly widened when she realized who she had bumped into. she would recognize an australian accent anywhere, she had grown up near daniel ricciardo. oscar piastri was too busy inspecting her phone for any cracks to notice the expression she had made. he handed her the phone as both stood to their full heights, he was noticeably taller than her.
"no cracks," oscar told her as he handed back her phone. she smiled politely at him, "thanks."
"and your friends are blowing up your phone. i think you had like 10 messages come in while i was checking to see if it had any cracks. not that i read them-"
isabella waved him off, "it's just max and danny, they were arguing about who had the horniest songs written about them."
oscar laughed, "i'm oscar piastri."
"i know, i'm isabella perez" she replied, "i saw your alpine tweet, plus arthur talks about you a lot."
"i know," oscar replied, "arthur leclerc? you two know each other?" he questioned as they began walking together. isabella didn't know where he had originally been heading but now the two were walking back to their hotels.
"he's dating my sister, dulce? you might know her."
"oh, you're isa. i always wondered why they called you isa and not bella."
"because i will stab anyone who calls me bella," isabella emptily threatened. too enthralled on her phone she failed to notice the small smile on oscar's face.
"okay, bella."
isabella quickly looked up, glaring at him, "i'm glad you dnf'd."
"ouch," oscar dramatically muttered, "you wound me bella."
the two were interrupted by a voice shouting for oscar. they turned around and were met with the sight of alex albon and logan sargeant, both williams drivers also walking back to their hotel.
"alabono!" isabella shouted, rushing to hug the bleached-blonde. the taller driver opened his arms and accepted the hug, "hi, isa. did you have a good day?"
"no, charles dnf'd, so the ferrari in me is crying. however, the redbull in me is screaming for joy."
before alex could reply a ding interrupted him and caused isabella to look down at her phone. her eyes widened, and she handed her phone over to alex, "can you give this to max or danny later? i'm catching a flight on air-max later tomorrow."
alex nodded, "see you in glendale. or sooner."
"bye alex, bye logan, bye piastri!" isabella shouted as she ran off. logan looked confused between isabella's phone and alex, "why'd she give you her phone?"
the phone dinged again and alex sighed as he switched the phone to silent, "it's quite the story, one that either isa or dulce should tell you, not me."
"okay," logan said, he turned to oscar, "why'd she call you piastri?"
"oh, i called her bella," oscar replied, as if it was the easiest thing in the world. alex's eyes widned and logan knew their was a story there but he didn't pry. he wasn't close to any of the other drivers besides oscar, so he wasn't going to ask. he could be nosy sometimes but even he knew his limits. alex didn't want to talk about isabella's phone so maybe the phone had something to do with calling her bella.
"surprised you're still standing," alex said, "last time someone called her bella she kicked him in the nuts, and they had just met. he stopped calling her bella after that."
the two rookies exchanged looks as alex pocketed isabella's phone and pulled out his own phone and began to type furiously on it. logan's phone dinged moment's later but he ignored it, not wanting to make oscar suspicious. however, when his phone kept dinging oscar turned to him curiously and logan waved him off, silencing his phone.
"just friends from home, they were planing a party," logan quickly lied. oscar shrugged him off and logan was quick to divert the conversation to a random topic.
Tumblr media
alex albon OSCAR CALLED HER BELLA AND HE'S STILL STANDING. NO BALLS WERE KICKED!!!!

carlos sainz QUE? HE CALLED HER WHAT? dulce perez the only people allowed to call her bella was our dad, tio checo too, but ever since dad passed she hasn’t let anyone call her that. she says it was his name and only his. arthur leclerc her ex tried calling her bella and she kicked him in the nuts when they first met. he still did it every time he was angry at her. charles leclerc which was everyday and she always cried because only her dad was allowed to call her that. logan sargeant so the ex was an asshole? max verstappen biggest understatement of the year.
logan sargeant and that’s why she gave her phone to alex earlier.
mick schumacher HE TEXTED? AGAIN? I WOULD STRANGLE HIM IF I WOULDN'T LAND IN JAIL
daniel ricciardo i’m going to punch that guy. take a hint dude.
logan sargeant why don’t you guys just block him?
dulce perez oh why didn’t we try that? WE DID THAT YOU AMERICAN!
natalia ruiz seb said we needed to teach her to not reach out to him on her own. we're starting with confiscating her phone anytime he texts her and we give it to her the next day. it was hard to get where we are now, trust me. she used to fight us on it but now she just hands her phone over.
mae jones we're not quite sure what the next step is but we're making progress. maybe we can get her to block him on her own.
george russell so what exactly is the next step in operation osbella? obella? iscar? what's the official name?
fernando alonso how about 'all of you need to stop being invested in isabella's love life and go the hell to sleep?"
lando norris yes papa nando. fernando alonso that's going to stick isn't it? max verstappen absolutely lando norris 100 percent daniel ricciardo already making t-shirts lance stroll papa nando, papa seb, and uncle lewis mae jones good luck explaining that one to isa and oscar in the other groupchat.

The former One Direction will perform in Chile on May 24 at the Bicentenario Stadium in La Florida with his "Faith in the Future" tour. We talked exclusively with the British star who went from being a teenage pop idol to a professional soccer player, and finally to consolidating his own more mature and rocking sound. This is the successful present of the artist who loves to sing as much as he loves to play ball.
Dove Couple
Monday, April 8, 202408:10 am
[Translated from Spanish]
In 2022, Louis Tomlinson stepped on Chile for the first time alone to present his debut album "Walls". A bet that exceeded any expectation, because the madness was such that the British, that the former One Direction filled the Movistar Arena three times.
But that was not all, his fans had prepared a surprise for him that, as he confessed to La Cuarta, gave him "goosebumps." During the chorus of the song "Kill my mind", the young women organized themselves to coordinate the lights of their cell phones, creating a kind of mesmerizing wave, leaving the singer and his team speechless, so much so that the moment was recorded in his documentary "All of Those Voices". Moreover, the photo of one of those concerts was nothing more and nothing less than the poster.
But the music that makes him vibrate so much was not always his first choice in life. In 2013, just when the One Direction world tour that brought them to Chile was announced with two concerts at the National Stadium, Louis signed a contract with the League TwoDoncaster Rovers team, and only in 2017, two years after the group took an indefinite break, he was able to debut as a substitute in a match witnessed by more than five thousand fans.
“It's really an honor to be in the club where I spent most of my childhood," he wrote at the time on his Twitter account. However, the boy's dream stagnated when in 2020 and in the middle of the pandemic, he decided to launch himself as a soloist. All of his former bandmates had done it; it was his time.
Thus Louis - whom we recognize with nostalgia, familiarity, and a psychological interest - became one of the most important artists of his generation, adding milestones such as a billion streams on Spotify, numerous awards and being in the Guinness World Records book for breaking the record for the most watched live broadcast concert of a male soloist.
"I FEEL VERY GRATEFUL TO HAVE THAT LOVE HERE"
On the day of the interview with the newspaper, we arrived at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel where the interpreter stayed two days after a successful presentation at Tecate Pa'l Norte 2024 in Mexico, and a promotional step through Brazil. Despite the fatigue, he maintained a good attitude with the press, but mainly with his crowded fans outside the venue, who shouted his name from time to time.
Being in front of a pop idol who has spent half of his life on tour, in conferences and with a handful of iconic songs that marked more than a generation, is truly intimidating, but Louis makes anyone lower their guard because he welcomes you as if he were your friend. Wearing a pair of relaxed jeans, black t-shirt and sneakers in tune, he smiles and greets us in a friendly manner. Although he is surrounded by people who make up his team— overwhelming— but this is his natural environment; and thus begins a dialogue with La Cuarta about his two passions.
Q: Louis, you return to Chile in May after filling three arenas on your last visit, something historic! What will it be like to return with that powerful precedent?
Louis: I feel like my Spanish is coming back! I almost knew what you were asking (laughs). I'm very excited, I feel very lucky to be able to perform in an enclosure of that size in my... well, technically on my second solo tour. I feel very grateful to have that love and passion here. I'm mainly very excited about these shows.
Q: In several of your "Faith In the Future" songs, you talk about nostalgia, changes and the passage of time. Are they topics that you think about frequently or only arise when composing?
Louis: Yes, I would say that I am a little bit of a deep thinker. I think it helps me as a songwriter, but I also think that nostalgia is a great thing to write about. It’s a great topic to feel as a listener and also to write as a songwriter. And I'm also interested in psychology, so anything that makes the brain feel in a certain way, I think it's interesting.
Q: What would the 32-year-old Louis with a successful second album under his arm and a new tour say to the teenager who applied to The X Factor in 2010?
Louis: I would insist that he should do it. I think there is definitely an element, in every young person in that situation, there is something very terrifying that makes you want to start. But I would also tell you, what I have learned the most, to trust your instinct, trust that feeling and be brave to make decisions, the right decisions for yourself.
Q: Among those decisions is to be the last 1D member to make your solo career, and today we are here with "Faith In The Future" that sounds 100% yours. Looking back, how do you see the path has unwinded?
Louis: I feel very comfortable. The mentality I have now feels very different from the one I had when I started this trip as a soloist. I feel very blessed to be able to continue making music. But it's also a very nice feeling and it's something very new for me to feel so comfortable on stage and so comfortable when I'm making the music I want to make. In general, yes, I am very happy.
WHEN CHILE DRISTLED HIS SKIN
Q: Louis, I imagine there must be some time in your career when you said, wow, I did it!
Louie: You know, I used to resist that idea, because for some reason, I don't know, I never wanted to give myself that. But I've had it, I've started trying to have those moments for myself. It often happens during concerts, it can be something that fans did together, like fun fan projects. But also, even when I played at the festival now in Mexico, that was one of those moments. I was a little nervous when I went out and the audience was so big, but people seemed to be having a good time. So yes, it was amazing.
Q: Now that you mentioned the fan project, when you came to Chile, your followers prepared one for the song "Kill My Mind" that was beautiful. How did you experience it from the stage?
Louis: I had no idea what was going to happen! I know that fans often make fan projects, in a way of doing something entertaining for me and something unique in each show, but I didn't know what to expect. And, to be honest, I remember that I got goosebumps, it was an incredible show. And, again, always in these concerts, and especially in Latin America, it’s not only ten people, everyone on the venue is participating! For me, it’s a very euphoric thing to see from the stage.
Q: Changing the subject, football is one of your passions, what place does it occupy in your life today?
Louis: I would say that definitely, before I was in the band, nothing came close in my life, football was everything to me. Now music is. I absolutely love football, but for me nothing comes close to music. Obviously it's my job, that's important, but as a fan, I'm talking more like a fan, I probably don't watch enough football these days, I'm usually busy, but I catch up with the "highlights" (the most important moments of the game). It's still a big part of my life, especially when they play in England. I'm excited for the next European Championship. We're going to win it!
Q: Of course! [England] is the parents of football. Finally, what makes you happiest today?
Louis: The family, definitely, the family and friends. And specifically in my work world. It's live concerts. That gives me amazing feelings.

Log #3
Author’s Notes: Thank you for your support on the last log! I'm happy you enjoyed it, as unrefined as it was, but hopefully you'll enjoy this next one too. I want to keep these A/N's short as to have more time to write, and also to practice being more concise since that has been one of the challenges I've had with writing for a while now, so I'll just head straight on with it. This next one is an attempt at writing a chapter of an atmospheric story revolving around Medic and Heavy, of their blossoming friendship and maybe something more... up to you to decide! ;-) (The next log will be a Part Two to this, as the idea I have in mind is quite long, but feel free to leave your predictions down below!)
Title: King of Hearts (Part One) Fandom: Team Fortress 2 New Mexico, Badlands, Teufort City, The Cap Point 6:30PM, sometime during the Gravel War
"Ah, and here we are!"
The ambulance backs up into an empty lot, sealing its usual spot in the sea of other vehicles. Though the unusual choice of transport was initially an oddity, its frequent visits to this particular establishment had become so normal that no one bothered to question its presence anymore. The engine sputters to a stop, and its two unorthodox passengers hop out; the stalwart Heavy and the eccentric Medic, the iconic, unconventional yet unstoppable duo of the Badlands.
"Is good to be back, " the burly Russian exclaims, giving his comrade a hearty pat on the back as he slams the door of the ambulance. The latter grins, returning the gesture and slamming his own equally as loud.
"Yes, and it is good to have you back, mein friend! I don't doubt that the others will think ze same."
Heavy leads the way, the duo making their way towards the side of the building. Its dim neon lights glimmer in the darkening sky, creating a mixed atmosphere of class and risky fun. With the nighttime wind chills slowly falling upon them, the two quicken their pace and turn the corner. In front of them in big, shining yellow letters is a sign that reads: "The Cap Point - Teufort City's Best Bar & Tabletop Game Experience"
Heavy stops in place for a moment, looking up at the glowing signage above them. "Do you think little lady will be there?", he asks quietly.
"Pauling? Oh, I highly doubt it. Poor woman, always so busy with her work all ze time", the doctor replies, shaking his head.
"Is shame. Would have liked to challenge woman at poker; she always knows when I am bluffing", the big man chuckles to himself.
"Hah! Maybe it's because you can barely keep a straight face when you lie; your eyebrows always seem to lift up like springs, a bit like zis;"
Medic's eyes furrow, then arch into an exaggerated expression of surprise, mouth slightly agape for emphasis. Heavy scoffs, a smirk playing at his lips as he playfully crosses his arms.
"Now is doktor's turn to bluff; Heavy does not do that when lying. Heavy has excellent poker face, see?"
Heavy's face deadpans, his amused face suddenly turning cold. Medic's face, however, only grins with mischief, like that of a Cheshire cat.
"Is zat so? Well then, can you tell me where the whereabouts of my strudel from last night might be?", he asks teasingly.
Heavy's deadpan expression falters and, well, don't you know, so do his eyebrows, lifting themselves high enough they could touch the stars. Abashed, Heavy looks away to the doorways of the building, speedily turning to walk away from the sly practitioner.
"Heavy knows nothing of that, apologies", he says finally, quickly walking through the doorway. Medic laughs, satisfied with himself, and trails behind him.
As soon as they enter the establishment, they are greeted with the familiar, loud, cozy atmosphere of the bar. Various customers fill the many tables placed around the room, the bartop buzzing with animated chatter and cheery banter. Tom Jones's infamous "Sexbomb" booms on the radios, and a game of billiards is being played with such vigour at the back that you could hear the yells of the players resonate throughout the entire building. As usual, it emanates from its typical suspects.
"You've gotta be freakin' kiddin' me! What the hell is wrong with you?", a high, brash voice cries out.
"Scout, it isn't my fault that your embarassing lack of competence at breaking has made it difficult for either of us to score a point", a lower voice replies with a nasty sneer.
"Oh yeah? Well, how do you explain that the drunkest person on Earth and a wannabe American hero have scored more than you have the entire night?"
"Maybe because they had some sense to not stay on a team with a man in his twenties who can barely read!"
"Crikey, would the both of you just stop bloody bickerin'? Some of us here are actually tryin' to enjoy the game," a third gruff individual reacts.
"Shut up, this doesn't concern you!", the first two voices yell back.
Heavy laughs softly. "Looks like little men are having fun."
"Ja, why don't we go join in on ze experience?"
The two make stride across the bar, the shorter of the two men happily waving to the bartender on their way there. When they get there, the argument dies down and is instead replaced with curious excitement.
"Ey, long time no see, fat man!", Scout, the supposed incompetent breaker, exclaims.
"Ah, Heavy, it is a pleasure to see you again", Spy, the snarky Frenchman, says. "How was your trip to Siberia?"
"Was good, thank you. Is always good to see family."
Heavy takes a seat at the table next to Sniper, the attempted argument breaker, and signals for a waitress. Medic strikes up a conversation with Soldier and Demoman in the corner, excitedly babbling on about human heads, to which both of them join in without hesitation.
"One vodka", he orders, "and one sparkling water for doktor, please. Don't worry, I pay."
The lady smiles and nods, walking away to retrieve their drinks. Sniper smirks, surprised.
"Just got back and you're already feeling charitable, mate? Didn't your trip cost you enough?", Sniper laughs.
"Heavy does not mind. Doktor was there to meet Heavy at airport and buy him favourite food, so Heavy pay doktor back", he replies, matter-of-factly.
Sniper shifts in his seat, his smirk converting to a genuine smile of admiration. "Wow, it must be pretty nice havin' a good chum like the doc, huh?"
"Yes, is nice. Medic and I always nice together", Heavy says, returning the smile and turn to his friend.
From the corner of his view, he sees the Medic return his gaze and nod, a slight smile on his face and a grateful expression, before he returns to his own discussion.
The Australian takes a gulp of his martini and leans backwards in his chair, allowing himself to ease up in the comfort of the seat. He notices Heavy still looking at his friend in the corner, his expression content like that of one in a warm blanket. He scratches at the slight stubble on his chin, still observing him with intrigue.
"Say, why don't you tell me more about your friendship with our happy healer here? Seems like you two get along better than the rest of us mercs," Sniper says, adjusting his hat to better glimpse at the gentle giant before him.
Heavy looks back at the Australian and chortles, sliding his hand over the back of his head. "Ah, is very long story. Dok and I go way back, even before we became mercenary. You sure you want to hear all of it?"
"Sure, let's have a go at it. Probably be a lot more entertainin' than watching these two buggers argue the entire night", he sighs, loosely gesturing at the father-son duo as the tension begins to spark the flame of another petty anger-fest.
Heavy nods, understanding. He puts his bulky arms on the table and fully faces the marksman, inadvertedly causing the table and the fragile martini glass on it to shake a little, but neither seem to notice.
"Well", he begins, "it all starts when I first begin to live in Siberian Mountains with family, after escaping shoot-out in Gulag..."
To be continued in RQDL 4...

Louis Tomlinson, two passions and one direction: “I absolutely love football, but for me nothing comes close to music”
The former One Direction will perform in Chile on May 24 at the Bicentenario Stadium in La Florida with his “Faith in the Future” tour. We spoke exclusively with the British star who went from being a teenage pop idol to a professional footballer, and finally to consolidating his own more mature and rock sound. This is the successful present of the artist who loves to sing as much as he loves
In 2022, Louis Tomlinson set foot in Chile for the first time alone to present his debut album “Walls” . A bet that exceeded any expectations, since the madness was such that the British, that the former One Direction filled the Movistar Arena three times
But that was not all, his fans had prepared a surprise for him that, as he confessed to La Cuarta , gave him “goosebumps . ” During the chorus of the song “Kill my mind” , the young women organized themselves to coordinately move the lights of their cell phones, creating a kind of hypnotizing wave, leaving the singer and his team speechless, so much so that the moment was recorded in their documentary “ “All of Those Voices . ” Furthermore, the photo of one of those concerts was nothing more and nothing less than the poster.
But the music that makes him vibrate so much was not always his first choice in life. In 2013, just when One Direction's world tour was announced, which brought them to Chile with two concerts at the National Stadium , Louis signed a contract with the League Two team Doncaster Rovers , and only in 2017, two years after the group took an indefinite break, he was able to debut as a substitute in a match witnessed by more than five thousand fans.
INTERVIEW UNDER CUT:
“It is truly an honor to be at the club where I spent most of my childhood,” he wrote on his Twitter account at the time. However, the kid's dream was stagnant when in 2020 and in the middle of the pandemic, he decided to go solo, all of his former bandmates had done it, it was his time.
Thus, Louis - who recognized us as being nostalgic, familiar and interested in psychology - became one of the most important artists of his generation, adding milestones such as one billion streams on Spotify , numerous awards and being in the Guinness World book. Records for breaking the record for the most-watched livestreamed concert by a male soloist.
“I FEEL VERY GRATEFUL TO HAVE THAT LOVE HERE”
On the day of the interview with the pop newspaper , we arrived at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel where the performer spent two days after a successful presentation at Tecate Pa'l Norte 2024 in Mexico, and a promotional tour of Brazil. Despite his fatigue, he maintained a good attitude with the press, but mainly with his fans gathered outside the venue, who shouted his name from time to time.
Being in front of a pop idol who has spent half his life on tour, in conferences and with a handful of iconic songs that marked more than one generation, is truly intimidating, but Louis makes anyone lower their guard because he welcomes you. as if he were your friend. Wearing a pair of relaxed jeans, a black t-shirt and matching sneakers, he smiles and greets friendly, he is surrounded by people who make up his team, overwhelming, but it is his natural environment; and thus begins a dialogue with La Cuarta about his two passions.
Louis, you return to Chile in May after filling three arenas on your last visit, something historic! What will it be like to return with such a powerful precedent?
I feel like my Spanish is coming back! I almost knew what you were asking (laughs). I'm very excited, I feel very lucky to be able to perform in a venue that size on my... well, technically my second solo tour. I feel very grateful to have that love and passion here. Mainly I feel very excited for these shows.
- In several of your songs on “Faith in the future”, you talk about nostalgia, changes and the passage of time. Are these themes that you think about frequently or do they only arise when composing?
Yes, I would say I'm a bit of a deep thinker, I think it helps me as a songwriter, but I also think nostalgia is a great thing to write about, it's a great thing to feel about as a listener and also to write about as a songwriter. And I'm also interested in psychology, so anything that makes the brain feel a certain way, I think is interesting.
- What would the 32-year-old Louis, with a second successful album under his arm and a new tour, say to the teenager who applied for The X Factor in 2010?
I would insist that he should do it. I think there's definitely an element, in every young person in that situation, there's something very scary that makes you want to go. But I would also tell him, what I have learned the most, to trust his instincts, trust that feeling and be brave to make decisions, the right decisions for yourself.
- Among those decisions is being the last member of 1D to go solo, and today we are here with “Faith in the future” which has a sound that is 100% yours. Looking back, how do you see the path you have traveled?
I feel very comfortable. The mindset I have now feels very different than when I started this journey as a solo artist. I feel very blessed to be able to continue making music. But it's also a very nice feeling and it's something very new for me to feel so comfortable on stage and so comfortable when I'm making the music I want to make. Overall, yes, I am very happy.
-Louis, I imagine there must have been a moment in your career when you said, wow, I did it!
You know, I used to resist that idea, because for some reason, I don't know, I never wanted to give myself that. But I've had it, I've started trying to have those moments for myself. It often happens during concerts, it can be something that fans did together, like entertaining fan projects. But also, even when I played the festival now in Mexico, that was one of those moments. I was a little nervous going out and the crowd was so big, people looked like they were having a good time. So yeah, it was amazing.
- Now that you mentioned the fan project, when you came to Chile your followers prepared one for the song “Kill my mind” that was beautiful, how did you experience it from the stage?
I had no idea what was going to happen! I know that fans often do fan projects, in a way to do something entertaining for me and something unique in each show, but I didn't know what to expect. And to be honest, I remember getting goosebumps, it was an incredible show. And, again, always in these concerts, and especially in Latin America, there are not ten people, everyone in the venue is participating! It's a very euphoric thing to see from the stage for me.
- Changing the subject, football is one of your passions, what place does it occupy in your life today?
I would say that definitely, before I was in the band, nothing came close in my life, football was everything to me, now music is. I absolutely love football, but for me nothing comes close to music. Obviously it's my job, that's important, but as a fan, I'm speaking more like a fan, I probably don't watch enough football these days, I'm usually busy, but I catch up on the highlights. ). It's still a big part of my life, especially when England plays. I'm excited for the upcoming Euro Cup, we're going to win it!
- Of course! You are the fathers of football. Finally, what makes you most happy today?
Family, definitely, family and friends. And specifically in my work world, it's live concerts, that gives me amazing feelings.
Louis Tomlinson will perform at the Estadio Bicentenario La Florida on May 24. General ticket sales are available through Ticketmaster.cl

Here is the official turnaround of the final design I did of Namor for Wakanda Forever ! Which will be streaming soon on Disney+ I am so grateful that Ryan Coogler chose my design for the warrior look! I still can’t believe I got to design this iconic character. These designs were then sent to the costume designer Ruth Carter who, together with her team, did an amazing job materialized the costume you see on the big screen! The design process actually begun a year before the production started. It was a fun 2 months of explorations! During this time I worked under THE LEGENDARY  Marvel Studios Visual Development Dept. headed by none other than the amazing Ryan Meinerding The team is an integral part in designing the Heroes and Villains of the MCU and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever was no exception. It was fun exploring the look of Namor as well as his people of Tlalocan early on. The necklace for Namor was a treat to design. Looking to Mayan glyphs and architecture for inspiration! But the break though would come in a dream! I would imagine that I was an artist living in that time and looking for work  This was when I saw the 2 serpents on the necklace in my dream. Then I woke from my dream and started designing with Kukulkan in mind. I explained that the 2 serpents represented the duality of Kukulkan. He is the bringer of life and death. The pearl in the middle represents the sun/moon or life, so depending how you see it , the winged serpent is either giving you life or taking it away from you. I watched a lot of documentaries about the Mayans, the Olmecs and the Aztecs. I also looked at ancient indigenous people of the north, south Americas as well as in Asia. What are the similarities and differences I can push. I want to share so much more of my journey I learned more of the history of Mexico , the colonization of a people and the attempt of erasing of their language and culture. This was some of the sad parts of my research that made this journey a bit more emotional to me because I also come from a country colonized by Spain. I hope this insight to my design process is interesting to you. Marvel has always been an amazing place to work in, we are encouraged to really push our creativity and some of our keyframes even shape the script! Plus we get credited for our work in the artbooks! I am lucky to have worked along some amazing visual development artists, (concept artist and problem solvers) .  Please check out their designs! Adi Granov , Phil Saunders, Phillip Boutté Jr. ,Josh Nizzi ,Wesley Burt ,Keith Christensen , Joshua James Shaw ... if I missed anyone I apologize ! And lastly to all the True Believers out there! to all the fans of the Marvel Comics and the MCU , thank you so much! I wouldn't be able to make a living doing what I love if it weren't for you fandom!

Hello
I know I'm barely here anymore
But unfortunately the Ritalin shortage in Summer caused me to become hyperfixation on Overwatch, Gabriel Reyes/Reaper in particular (AGAIN), against my very will.
But I'm here to make it everyone else's problem again and have been challenged by @wildissylupus to post my Martina Reyes HCs (or basically character summary at this point)!!!
So
Here
We
GOOOOOO
(Please note I am Filipina, not Mexican or Latine at all, I'm trying my best to research, but please correct me if I'm wrong)
- 1st of all, for me it is Dr. Martina Nuñez-Reyes, women in STEM, iconic
- Born and raised in San Diego, in particular in or by Barrio Logan!
- She is specifically Nahua Mexican with family in Guerrero, Mexico. She has learned a lot of Precolonial History and mythology, both in school and from her family. She also speaks Nahuatl fluently, as well as Spanish and ASL.
- Sweet, nurturing, professional, good tempered, graceful, makes lots of bad puns (she and Winston got along great), but occasionally slips in some "joking" sadism and morbid curiosity.
- Loves perfume even though she can't wear it often due to her work in laboratories and hospitals, will wear even just a little bit even at home to enjoy it.
- joined a ballet folklorico troupe up until High School, but still remembers the moves well. Specializes in Guerrero style folklorico!
- Excellent cook, amazing baker. Loves to adapt recipes to include lots of spices. (This will come back later)
- Interested in the medical field, specifically medicine itself, after learning about how advanced Mesoamerican civilizations were medically.
- Martina was a regular prodigy, attending an advanced secondary school academy in Mexico City, before continuing on to get PhDs in Medicine, Chemistry, and Pharmaceutical Science by age 24.
- By age 26 she had already made strides by synthesizing and creating medicine that was able to do things like naturally accelerate healing in the body.
- That's also when the Omnic Crisis began. She was inducted by the United States Military among swathes of other skilled doctors to create the Super Soldier Serum for the Soldier Enhancement Program (SEP) at a hidden facility.
- Six months, they managed to get it to an acceptable loss rate of 25%, and test it on 100 Soldiers. She was in charge of overseeing the injections of 20 of the 100 randomly assigned under her, which included Soldier 24, Gabriel Reyes, and Soldier 76, Jack Morrison. It was also done in doses, not all at once.
- She and Gabriel were attracted to each other but didn't act on it for quite a bit, due to the taboo nature of a doctor and a patient. They didn't flirt either, but had moments of "Oh fuck they're hot" before shaking it off.
- After the second round of doses, she lost her first soldier, which made the risk of SEP all the more apparent to her.
- Remember when I mentioned she's good at baking? She stress bakes because it helps make a zen sort of ritual of following steps/regaining a small sense of control. The reason Gabriel loves cookies? It's because he woke up at 2AM catching her stress baking a batch of Chili Chocolate Chip Cookies. It's where they had a heart to heart about Gabriel and the other Enhanced Soldiers trusting Martina and the doctors no matter the risk because they know they're liable to die in the Crisis anyway if they can't make headway.
- As the Crisis gets more dire, the General orders the doctors at the SEP facility to also go through basic military training, which Martina disliked, so she never really went past a machine pistol.
- 33 Soldiers make it out, and she sent with them on missions to retake cities across America. She wouldn't always be an active combatant, but she could hold her own if she had to.
- When Gabriel Reyes and Jack Morrison were selected to the elite Overwatch core team, she helped lead their medical support team. Also yes during this whole time, Gabriel and Martina still were attracted to each other but still sort of afraid to act because not only is she still his Doctor, he's now her commanding officer.
- Also during this period she helps treat a young Angela Ziegler during the bombing of Zurich.
- After fighting alongside Inti Warriors (Specifically Illari's dad) to help retake part of Central and South America, Gabriel almost died, which caused her to go full BAMF, and save him.
(Jack: "... can someone please tell me why our medic is rushing in alone, guns blazing?")
- They have to repair ships and stuff, so they decide to take R&R in reclaimed Guerrero, where Martina shows Gabriel around, and they end up dancing together. It's where they finally give in and end up in a relationship.
- Get married the last year of the Omnic Crisis, and have a son a few years later named Izel (who is the grown man with a family in my heart and soul in the Reflections Comic)
- Dr. Martina Nuñez-Reyes is the first Head of Medicine in Overwatch's Golden Age because goddamnit someone had to have that position before Angela.
- She's also Angela's mentor and sort of like an adoptive mom, Angela absolutely idolized her
Here's where my Canon deviates hard, because Blizzard's timeline makes no sense
(Fun fact this next part exists because I misread Code of Violence and thought that the ash and burning was from Gabriel's memories of Echo Park and not where he was so I straight up thought Martina was fridged a whole ass year before I heard the voicelines and reread it for clarity, but she's not fridged. Just stay with me.)
- On Izel's 6th birthday in Echo Park, there was an attempted assassination via explosions that caused Izel to lose his left arm and replace it with a prosthetic (the man in the Reflections comic has his left arm in his pocket)
- It also very nearly kills Martina, who is 6 MONTHS PREGNANT WITH THEIR DAUGHTER, Graciela
- The family lives, and Graciela has to be c-section delivered prematurely
- This ofc enrages Martina and Gabriel who, after recovery, hunt the motherfucker down to kill.
- It is not a quick death. Martina synthesizes POISON to make that fucker die screaming. (Basically I wanted to flip the Dead Wife trope where the wife lives and is FUCKING PISSED AND JOINS HER HUSBAND ON A ROARING RAMPAGE OF REVENGE)
- Oh yeah and that triggers the birth of Blackwatch lmao.
- Gabriel brought Cole Cassidy home for Christmas where she immediately enfolds Cole into the family.
- Martina and Gabriel also help Cole get his GED.
- Oh yeah Blackwatch
- So Martina supplies the poisons for coercion, torture, and assassination (and torture) to Blackwatch under the table for super covert missions, basically even people at Blackwatch didn't even know about. Ma'am was committing war crimes to keep the world and her babies safe. All while keeping up the sweet, dedicated, professional facade for like 14 years.
- Gabriel tries to get her to make another super soldier serum so he can be stronger, she refuses, they argue, him calling her a hypocrite, and it looks bad, UNTIL
- Shit happens and she accidentally lets a poison slip that gets reverse engineered and kills a lot of people, causing her to retire and Mercy steps up. Gabriel keeps her secret and they end up staying together
- HOWEVER, once the Venice Incident happens and Izel disowns his father, she chooses to not back up Gabriel's choices, whereas their daughter Graciela does, causing them to be separated but still married.
- Gabriel considers leaking her secret, but loves her too much to/wants the kids to have at least one parent they don't detest
- After the Swiss Explosion, Martina and Graciela mourn very badly, Izel rekindled his relationship with his mother but not Graciela
(Izel needs his own post probably lmao)
- Martina tries to move on, but finds she can't.
- listen once a man is willing to cover up war crimes for you, it's a very hard standard to meet
- She rejects the recall initially but to avoid this post from being even longer REASONS, Graciela goes with/gets kidnapped by (it's complicated) Talon, which is how Cole finds out Gabriel is Reaper
- Joins in to get her daughter back, and to redeem herself because she realizes how much destruction she caused even if people deserved it... lowkey she even doesn't fully regret it depending on the person she killed
- Her abilities are she got a CPR glove that can shock people in one hand that can pull Medicated/poison grenades out of a storage and a Pistol in the other and she can inject peeps with medication close quarters.
- She's like 63 currently also (in my Canon, Gabriel got a significant age bump with a bunch of other characters, he is 67 but is technically frozen at age 58)
- blizzard if you read this and wonder why I turned this nameless, possibly faceless character into someone that's committed war crimes, I don't got a fucking clue either
- wildissylupus I'm so sorry for subjecting you to this, like how I will subject my friends to a PowerPoint presentation about my character lore and alternate overwatch timeline on my birthday

The Deep, destiny, and kleb for the ask game
The Deep- favorite sad escene.
Right now I can only think of two:
1- When Varvatos is discovered to be the Traitor and is he's banished of the team (along with his sacrifice before his rescue) in 3Below ; When Krel yells at him about how he hurt everyone I was more tears than person 😭 my poor old man. The found family theme always hits me hard.
2- The end of TH. I thought about the bathtub scene, iconic, We were all traumatized after that, But I love how emotional the ending of TH was, It was a very satisfying ending for me. I hate when things end in "that was the last adventure, There will be no more", but this ending makes it clear to you that this is not the end, that there is much ahead, But it's not a completely happy ending, They won the war and it shows, but they lost many battles and it also shows, But they keep going, they don't think, they will become
😭😭😭
2- Destiny- Would I like to live in a world with magic?
It depends, having magic sounds like the coolest thing in the world, But I feel like it's the hardcore version of doing school math, chemistry and physics but only with bigger consequences (I almost failed them all in school in all their levels, If I had magic I would be a walking danger) And it would be even sadder for me 😂 I have many genius friends, I am sure I would be the only dumb ass who can't do anything. That, and I worry about people dumber than me or people who are violent using magic, the disaster sounds clear.
So yeah, Making the decision would take me days
Kleb- Random headcanon.
I am Mexican, And I can't help but look at Douxie and say: yes, he speaks Spanish and he was in Mexico at least once and he loved it.
I don't think he's an elitist of a single type of music, He enjoys, dances and sings every kind of music. So my real point is this: He is a fan of Luis Miguel, He knows all his songs and he sing them all very loudly.
I have seen that many of us want Barbara to adopt Douxie, but hear me out: He also being adopted by Claire's family. I imagine them singing together in Spanish and I think it's one of the most wholesome things I could ask for.
I attach here one song so that you can judge my headcanon for yourselves:

Amid a desert landscape a visionary unveils an invention that will forever change the world as we know it.
That’s the climactic scene of the Christopher Nolan biopic Oppenheimer, about the eponymous J. Robert Oppenheimer, the “father of the atomic bomb.” It’s also the opening scene of the Barbie movie, directed and co-written by indie auteur Greta Gerwig, which opened on the same day as Oppenheimer.
Despite the two films’ radically different subject matter and tone—one a dramatic examination of man’s hubris and the threat of nuclear apocalypse and the other a neon-drenched romp about Mattel’s iconic fashion doll—they have far more in common than just their release date. Both movies consider the complicated legacies of two American icons and how to grapple with and perhaps even atone for them.
In Oppenheimer, the desert scene depicts the Trinity test, the world’s first detonation of a nuclear bomb near Los Alamos, New Mexico, on July 16, 1945. A brilliant but flawed theoretical physicist and the rest of his team work frantically to develop the weapon for the United States before the Nazis can beat them to the punch; they then gather on bleak, lunar-white sands near their secret laboratory to test the terrifying creation.
The countdown timer ticks to 00:00:00, the proverbial big red button is pushed, and a blast ignites the sky—a blinding white flash that quickly morphs into a towering inferno. Everything goes silent as Oppenheimer stares in awe from behind a makeshift protective barrier at what he has created.
Suddenly, he begins experiencing flashes of a different kind, premonitions of the human horror and suffering his weapon will wreak. Nolan is unambiguously signaling to the audience that this is a pivotal moment for the world, and for Oppenheimer personally, as what was once merely a theoretical idea has become monstrously real. The fallout, both literally and figuratively, will be out of Oppenheimer’s control.
Barbie’s critical desert scene comes not at the film’s climax but at its very beginning. The movie opens with a parody of the famous “The Dawn of Man” scene from Stanley Kubrick’s classic 1968 science fiction film, 2001: A Space Odyssey. As a red-orange sunrise breaks across a rocky desert landscape, a voiceover (from none other than Dame Helen Mirren) begins: “Since the beginning of time, since the first little girl ever existed, there have been dolls. But the dolls were always and forever baby dolls.” On screen, underscored by the ominous notes of Richard Strauss’s “Also Sprach Zarathustra,” little girls sit amid dusty canyon walls playing with baby dolls.
“Until…” Mirren says. And then comes the reveal: The little girls look up to see a massive, monolith-sized Margot Robbie, dressed in the black and white-striped swimsuit of the very first Barbie doll. She lifts her sunglasses and winks. The little girls are stunned—and, like the apes in the classic sci-fi movie, they begin to angrily dash their baby dolls against the ground.
This is Barbie’s mythic origin story: Once upon a time, little girls could only play with baby dolls meant to socialize them into wanting to be good wives and, eventually, mothers. Then came Ruth Handler, who in 1959 decided to create a doll with an adult woman’s body, adult women’s fashions, and adult women’s careers so that little girls could dream of being more than just wives and mothers. And the rest is history. Thanks to such iterations as doctor Barbie, chef Barbie, scientist Barbie, professional violinist Barbie, and beyond, Barbie opened up young girls to a world of possibilities and, Mirren says, “All problems of feminism and equal rights [were] solved.”
Well, not so fast: Mirren adds one final, snarky beat: “At least,” she says, “that’s what the Barbies think.”
Thus Gerwig introduces the central tension that animates the movie: Handler set out to create a feminist toy to empower and inspire young girls. But we sitting in the audience in 2023 know that things worked out a little differently. In the intervening years, Barbie would come under fire from feminists and other critics for a whole host of sins: encouraging unrealistic and harmful beauty standards that contribute to negative body image issues, eating disorders, and depression among pre-adolescent girls; lacking diversity and perpetuating white supremacy, ableism, and heteronormativity; objectifying women; promoting consumerism and capitalism; and even contributing to greenhouse gas emissions.
And here is the core parallel between Barbie and Oppenheimer: Two iconic American creators who ostensibly meant well but whose creations caused irreparable harm. And two iconic American directors (Nolan is British-American) who set out to tell their stories from a very modern perspective, humanizing them while also addressing their harmful legacies.
But while Nolan obviously had the much harder task—no matter how much harm you think Barbie has done to the psyches of young girls over the years, there’s simply no comparison to the human toll of the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the environmental impact of decades of nuclear testing, or the cost of the nuclear arms race—oddly enough, it’s Gerwig who ends up taking her job of atonement far more seriously.
As its opening scene shows, the Barbie movie lets the audience know right from the start that it’s self-aware. It knows that Barbie is problematic. And it’s going to go there.
And it does—almost to the point of overkill. The basic plot of the movie is this: Barbie is living happily in Barbie Land, a perfect pink plastic world where she and her fellow Barbies run everything from the White House to the Supreme Court and have everything they could ever want, from dream houses to dream cars to dreamy boyfriends (Ken)—the last of which they treat as little more than accessories.
But suddenly, things start to go wrong in Barbie’s happy feminist utopia, and to fix it, she is forced to journey into the real world—our world—accompanied by Ken, who insists on going with her. When she does, she realizes that contrary to what she believed (as Mirren told us in the opening scene), the invention of Barbies didn’t solve gender inequality in the real world. In the real world, Barbie is confronted not only with the dominance of the patriarchy (she discovers, for instance, that Mattel’s CEO is a man, played by Will Ferrell), but also with the fact that young girls seem to hate her.
In a crucial early scene, Robbie’s Barbie encounters ultracool Gen-Z teen Sasha (played by Ariana Greenblatt), who delivers a scathing monologue about everything that’s wrong with Barbie, the doll and cultural symbol—basically a checklist of all the criticisms lobbed at Barbie over the years, from promoting unrealistic beauty standards to destroying the planet with rampant capitalism. Barbie is crestfallen.
Meanwhile, there’s a subplot involving Ken’s parallel discovery of patriarchy, and how awesome and different it seems to be from his subjugated life in Barbie Land. Ken proceeds to go full men’s rights, heading back to Barbie Land and seizing power. He transforms Barbie’s dream house into Ken’s Mojo Dojo Casa House, where Barbies serve men and “every night is boys’ night!”
Barbie enlists the help of Sasha and her mom (played by America Ferrera)—a Mattel employee who secretly dreams up ideas for new, more realistic Barbies such as anxiety Barbie—to unseat Ken and restore female power in Barbie Land. Along the way, Ferrera’s character delivers the film’s other major feminist monologue, about how hard it is being a woman in the real world.
The monologues are unsubtle, as are the repeated mentions of concepts like the patriarchy. In every scene and nearly every line, the movie hits the audience over the head with the pro-feminism message. Gerwig knows what her job is—to atone for Barbie’s sins (and, yes, help Mattel sell more dolls)—and she makes sure everyone knows that she has fully understood the assignment.
But it’s in the film’s quieter, more tender moments that Gerwig’s background as an indie filmmaker and her true talent shine through, and where she’s able to communicate the message in a subtler, but ultimately more impactful, way. The scene where Barbie in the real world sees an elderly woman for the first time (old people and wrinkles don’t exist in Barbie Land, obviously) and is stunned at how beautiful she is, wrinkles and all. Or the scenes where Barbie talks quietly with her deceased creator, an elderly Handler (played by Rhea Perlman), who explains that the name Barbie was an homage to Handler’s daughter, Barbara, who inspired her to make the doll.
The overall result is a movie that, even if a bit ham-fisted in its over-the-top messaging, doesn’t shy away from the uglier parts of Barbie’s legacy. It looks them right in the face, wrinkles and all.
I said above that the Trinity test scene is the climactic scene in Oppenheimer, but that’s not really the case. For a movie about the complicated life and legacy of the man credited with creating the world’s most destructive weapon, it should be the climax. You might imagine it would follow with a denouement of the inventor confronting the reality that his creation is used to kill tens of thousands of Japanese civilians and sparks an arms race that threatens to destroy all of humanity.
These scenes are in there, but they are given short shrift next to the other story Nolan wants to tell: that of how Oppenheimer, once considered an American hero, was mistreated by his country in the postwar years. As McCarthy-era fears of communist infiltration grip the country, Oppenheimer’s previous ties to the Communist Party (he never joined the party himself, but he had close family members and friends who were members, and he supported various left-wing causes) are mysteriously brought to the FBI’s attention despite already being well documented. His security clearance is revoked, and his career working with the U.S. government on nuclear issues ends.
It is this storyline—not the apocalyptic destruction of two Japanese cities—that is given the most pathos. Much of the movie’s three-hour run time—and nearly all of its third act—centers on what we are clearly meant to see as the great evil that was done to this man who did so much for his country. The real climax of the film is not the Trinity test, nor even the bombings of Japan (which are not even shown in the movie), but rather the moment we learn who betrayed Oppenheimer by handing over his security file to the FBI.
This is the shocking revelation that is meant to induce gasps in the audience, not the images of charred and irradiated bodies. In fact, those images aren’t even shown to us, the viewers. In the scene where Oppenheimer and his team are shown photos of the aftermath of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the camera stays tight on Oppenheimer’s face as he reacts to the images—a reaction that consists of him putting his head down to avoid seeing them.
It is an act of cowardice on Oppenheimer’s part, yes, but also on Nolan’s. Indeed, the only glimpses we get of the macabre effects of the atom bomb take place in Oppenheimer’s fevered imagination, and even then, they are brief flashes used for shock value: skin flapping off the beautiful face of an admiring female colleague; the charred, faceless husk of a child’s body Oppenheimer accidentally steps on; a male colleague vomiting from the effects of radiation. Of the Japanese victims, there is nothing. They remain theoretical, faceless.
Nolan has said that he chose not to depict the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki not to sanitize them but because the film’s events are shown from Oppenheimer’s point of view. “We know so much more than he did at the time,” Nolan said at a screening of the movie in New York. “He learned about the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki on the radio, the same as the rest of the world.”
But in reading the numerous interviews he’s given about the movie, it’s also clear that Nolan fundamentally sees Oppenheimer as a tragic hero—Nolan has repeatedly called Oppenheimer “the most important person who ever lived”—and Oppenheimer’s story as a distinctly American one. “I believe you see in the Oppenheimer story all that is great and all that is terrible about America’s uniquely modern power in the world,” he told the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists. “It’s a very, very American story.”
That Nolan’s film devotes so much runtime to Oppenheimer’s point of view and how he was tragically betrayed by his country is partly due to the fact that the film is not an original story but rather an adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning biography of the great scientist, American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer. That book also places Oppenheimer being stripped of his security clearance at its center. But that didn’t mean Nolan had to do the same in his adaptation. That was a choice. And the end result is what military technology writer Kelsey Atherton aptly described as “a 3 hour long argument that the greatest victim of atomic weaponry was Oppenheimer’s clearance.”
At a time when Americans are struggling to reckon with their country’s past and how it has shaped the present—from fights over how (or even whether) to teach children about the legacy of slavery and Jim Crow; to debates, including in these very pages, over the role (or lack thereof) of NATO expansion in Russia’s decision to wage war on Ukraine; to retrospectives on the myriad failures of the U.S. war in Afghanistan; and beyond—the fact that the two biggest films in theaters right now are attempting to confront the legacies of two American icons, the nuclear bomb and Barbie, is understandable and perhaps even impressive.
But the impulse to look away from the ugliest parts of those legacies remains strong, and Oppenheimer never fully faces them.

Mythology in our daily lifes: Mythologic symbolism in Football Teams
This is a post i want to do for a while, because one of my passions in studying mythology and one of the main topics i like to study is how Mythology is embedded in our daily lives and modern culture.
Football is the most popular sport on Earth, and as in many other sports, it has deep roots with myths. I personally have great interest in how sports connect us as Humans, and i started noticing how some teams have their symbology and their visual identity completely tied to mythology!
Hey, this post will be more less of an essay, and more an irreverent commentary. With all due respect to all the topics i will talk about here, but i will be a bit more casual in this text.
I took some examples to write about, and i will focus on those teams shields. The examples i have here are specifically from National Teams, but this can also apply for regional clubs as well. I just thought the examples i have here are a bit more straight to my point! If you have any regional club you want to show, because they have mythology embedded in their emblem or identity as well, please do!
So, let's start by the easiest:
Mexico National Team:
Tumblr media
The Mexico National Team honestly have one of the best looking logos on Earth right now, and it has everything to do with their own country Mythology.
According to the Aztec Codices, the founding myth of Tenochtitlan (capital of Aztec civilization, and later reborn as the Mexico City) should be done where an Eagle was seen eating a snake in a Cactus. Legend has, this was seen in an island inside a giant lake, that would later become Tenochtitlan. The city was made of small islands connected inside the lake, but was destroyed and the lake drained by the Spanish Invaders in the 16th Century.
There's some variations on this legend, as well. The Codex Fejérváry-Mayer does depict just an Eagle attacking a snake, while the Ramirez Codex corroborates the more popular version of the tale, that has the Cactus.
In other texts from the time, the specific creature being targeted by the Eagle is not specified.
The Aztec Codices are nothing more than registers from the civilizations on Central America, like painted books and documentations of their society. Many were lost to time, or destroyed on purpose by Spanish Invaders. Others, like those i have mentioned are well preserved or at least transcribed. This makes sourcing this tale not a very hard task, you can look it up yourself!
The Eagle, Serpent and Cactus became the most popular version of the tale. So much so, it became the coat of arms of Mexico, and the symbol is as well present in their national flag. The eagle is rumored to represent the solar and war deity, and Patron god of the capital city Tenochtitlan: Huītzilōpōchtli. While, it is true that Huītzilōpōchtli was connected to birds, more so the Hummingbird, there's also the suggestion it was connected to Eagles, which makes this shield much more iconic. Not only Mexico is evoking its ancestral god strength to guide the country, but also to play a world cup. Which i find pretty neat.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mexico's official coat of arms and the current National team shield
Analyzing the design, they have gone for spike outlines representing the cactus, while some kind of cubic shape (resembling Aztec aesthetic) go around, with the colors of the Mexican flag. The traditional Eagle is instead roosted with one leg on a football ball, which is the classic Tellstar model, that debuted in...You guessed! 1970 world cup, held at Mexico! A perfect match of the sport history, and national culture from Mexico, but as well many depictions of Mythology in a subtle manner in the logo. I really like it!
Japan National Team
Tumblr media
This shield was the reason i started to study about this topic to begin with, because i bought a Japan national team shirt, and started to notice Yatagarasu on its crest! Yes, the legendary three-legged-crow that guided emperror Jimu through Yamato.
The Yatagarasu legend is pretty simple, and it says this bird is a manifestation of ''divine will'', sent by Amaterasu herself to guide Jimu in his quest to found what would be modern day Japan, according to the myth.
According to the Kojiki, Yatagarasu was sent by Takamimusubi specifically. While the Amaterasu version is from the Kojiki. In the Nihon Shiki a rather different version of the crow, and his lineage can be seen.
Another fun fact is that, in all of Yatagarasu mentions in Japan's myth, originally there was no mention about the number of legs! This was later added after assimilation of nearby cultures that also had Three-Legged-Crows in their myths, such as Korea and China. This, however is just a theory scholars came with, and it could be also a misinterpretation caused by time.
Ok, but what exactly did Yatagarasu helped Jimu with?
Glad you asked!
According to a myth known as ''Eastern Expedition'', Yatagarasu was guiding Jimu while the later was trying to cross Seto Sea to the Kinki region, in his quest to establish the Yamato court and his country. Guided by the legendary Crow, they decided to attack from the east, crossing to the west during their quest of conquer, since attacking from the west did not prove helpful before. According to the tale, that was because Jimu, descending from Amaterasu should follow the Sun.
This was just one of the registers of the creature, that is some times regarded as guardian of Amaterasu herself. Many instances on record (both scholars and popular records) that, Yatagarasu also protected Amaterasu. In my research i did not found much evidence of this being recorded, but i also do not speak Japanese so... If you do, and know something please correct me!
It is also seems very common knowledge the Yatagarasu is very much worshipped in the Kumano region! But i should dive a bit more into that if i ever cover this Crow specifically, in the future!
But what is important is that, this creature was recorded in the Kojiki, Nihonshoki, and other archaeological sites, like murals and even mirrors!
But why is Yatagarasu balling in the Japanese national team shield then?
Tumblr media
Yatagarasu became a symbol of guidance to victory, and even before the founding of the team, in 1921, the Crow with three legs was already in use as family crests, and even in postal services. It would become associated with football when Japanese Football Association adopted it as a mascot in the 1930s. The crow, however, would just appear in kits during the 1980s.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The first Japanese national team logo and a shrine for Yatagarasu which uses a football ball!
The logo did not changed much during years, just slightly. The crow is always dominating a ball with one feet, while standing in the other two feet. The color red also symbolizes the sun, which is important as a national identity and the identity of the myth itself. In later iterations, such the more recent, the ball lack details, making it more like a sun.
Yatagarasu is also the official mascot of the JFA (Japanese Football Association) since 1931. Many associate the Yatagarasu link with football, being because the football pionner Nakamura Kakunosuke, ''Japan's football father'' was born in the Kumano region. He was a high school senior of Uchino Tairei. This football coach designed the JFA logo himself!
Even the Kumano Shrine officials accepted this new role of the deity. One of the shrines even has a statue of the crow with a football, just like the JFA logo. Some complexes also houses memorials to sports achievements.
You can read more about this in the following link
This is not my only source to this text, but there's a good chunk of information i could not cover, like some political background and more!
For me it is pretty cool overall how a mythological symbol changed over the years, and even embraced such a recent sport as football. Despite of the political connotations of its time, i believe that this is a very notorious occurrence, that should be studied more in this field!
Next we have a big one:
Brazil
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Brazil's logo in 1990 and Brazil logo during the 2020s. See if you spot the mythological reference in there!
Brazil is one of the behemoths of the sport, even if in a bit of a transitory and bad phase nowadays, the national team of Brazil, (also called ''Seleção'' which translates directly to ''The Selection'' referencing its the top players being selected to be there) managed to finish in the top 10 during the last five World Cup editions. It is also the first team to win it 3 times, and also the first and only to win it 5 times, making it a team loaded with history. But also symbology, that blends with the World Cup and Football history itself, which in turn blends with Mythology as you will see in a minute.
Starting by the newer shield, it is simple. All the colors of the national flag can be seen in it, and every time the team win another world cup, they add one star to it. In the center we have a Pate Cross. The Pate cross does not have anything mythological involving it, it was just from the Christ's Order an Order in which the first person to discover the territory one day would become Brazil, was a part of. That is just it.
Honestly i don't fully understand the reason for it to be there, but apparently it is so important that the Brazilian Football Confederation itself made it against their rules to remove it? Fine i guess...
(source here)
But really, i think the one which is really here to be talked about is their 1990-1991 shield, in which we have the Jules Rimet trophy instead of the cross. And that is what makes this shield so interesting for us. The Jules Rimet Trophy was the first trophy of the World Cup, and it would be given permanently to the winner of the tournament that could win it 3 times first. Brazil did it with Pelé in 1970, giving the trophy to the country definitively and getting the tournament a new one, the one with a ball in the top which you all are used to see nowadays.
Tumblr media
This shield while iconic, was very short lived... Sadly, it lasted less than a year!
The Trophy tiself represents no other than Nike, the Greek goddess of victory! Nike would help with war, athletics, debates and any other type of direct competition. Nike is more commonly associated with her iconic headless statue, and her wings always flying towards victory.
She is also usually depicted in myths as one of the first goddesses to offer help to Zeus in the Titanomachy, the war against the Titans. She then became an attendant to Zeus and Athena. There are some scholars who disagree on Nike's origin, was her part of Athens that became a whole? Or was always an unique goddess? It is hard to define for us, as both were important in the city of Athens, making it hard to distinguish.
Nike some times is described as the one who can judge mortals and gods in competition. Not only war, but music, athletics, or any given competition. She will always be on the side who deserves to win. Thus judging the winner as deserving. Nike was often described as helping athletes, and many times this is described as such. For instance here: Pindar Nemean 5 where it is said the Athlete Euthymenes of Aegina has ''Fallen in the arms of Victory''. This is a direct reference to Nike.
Nike also helped Zeus during his fight against Typhon, even protecting Zeus with her shield. This however only according to the Nonnos' Dionysiaca. The Theogony does not mention this happening.
If you go by the Homeric Hymns, describe Nike as being the daughter of Ares, while other sources like the Theogony says that Nike came from Styx and Pallas.
Tumblr media
Whoever was her true parents, during the early 20th century, Nike became associated with sports and athleticism in general, having her image printed in Olympic medals. Olympic games that were initially started imitating the ancient Greek games, specifically.
Nike is so associated with sports nowadays, her image is always on the medals as in the latest ones, for the Paris 2024 games
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Nike in the Olympic gold medal of 2024, and the Jules Rimet Trophy
So, when we come back to the 1990 Brazil shield, it all connects back to Nike, as if she was the patron of the team, guiding them to victory. Which makes extremely funny the fact that, the world cup after they removed her, they actually won it.
But in any case, i believe Nike could very much be brought back to the Brazilian Shield, since it has a deep connection to the history of the team and its past glories. The idea of Nike guiding the most victorious team back to its path of glory is extremely nice, and could be a very cool marketing campaign. But hey, what i know? I am just an amateur Mythology Scholar.
...
And that is mostly it.
I thought this would be a fun and quirky topic to talk about. I really enjoy how Mythology blends with our life and culture so well. For me it is fascinating, and i think this is a good example on how nice it is!

The Ring Nebula
"In this composite image, visible-light observations by NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope are combined with infrared data from the ground-based Large Binocular Telescope in Arizona to assemble a dramatic view of the well-known Ring Nebula. Credit: NASA, ESA, C.R. Robert O’Dell (Vanderbilt University), G.J. Ferland (University of Kentucky), W.J. Henney and M. Peimbert (National Autonomous University of Mexico) Credit for Large Binocular Telescope data: David Thompson (University of Arizona) ---- The Ring Nebula's distinctive shape makes it a popular illustration for astronomy books. But new observations by NASA's Hubble Space Telescope of the glowing gas shroud around an old, dying, sun-like star reveal a new twist. "The nebula is not like a bagel, but rather, it's like a jelly doughnut, because it's filled with material in the middle," said C. Robert O'Dell of Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn. He leads a research team that used Hubble and several ground-based telescopes to obtain the best view yet of the iconic nebula. The images show a more complex structure than astronomers once thought and have allowed them to construct the most precise 3-D model of the nebula. "With Hubble's detail, we see a completely different shape than what's been thought about historically for this classic nebula," O'Dell said. "The new Hubble observations show the nebula in much clearer detail, and we see things are not as simple as we previously thought". The Ring Nebula is about 2,000 light-years from Earth and measures roughly 1 light-year across. Located in the constellation Lyra, the nebula is a popular target for amateur astronomers."
