Trying to relax is hard for me. I've been meaning to look at this book that I got at the library. Every day I pick it up and then something distracts me from enjoying it, especially children. So today I finally have some free time to enjoy it...and yet before I could really settle down, I had to clean my kitchen. I just couldn't leave it messy even though I kind of wanted too.

Okay I have to tell you more about this book, because I’m in love.
It’s an exact facsimile of a year’s worth of nature notes created by Edith Holden in 1906. It’s a beautiful collection of nature illustrations, handwritten notes, personal observations and some of her favourite poetry.
She was a school teacher and wrote the notes for her own pleasure and to share with her students at Solihull School for Girls. It was never intended for publication.
She later moved to London and left teaching for a career in illustration, and in 1911 she married a sculptor named Ernest Smith.
In 1920 she fell into the Thames whilst collecting flowers from the riverbank of Kew Gardens, and drowned.
Her nature notes were kept by Ernest and passed down to his family after his death. In 1977, Edith’s great niece, Rowena Stott, who had spent her childhood admiring the notes, published them under the title of The Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady.

"16. Saw the first Wild Rose in bloom, -- a fine pink one, on the top of a high hedge; also Blackberry in blossom. The Roses and Honeysuckle are full of bud, but they are late in bloom this year, owing to the long spell of cold weather."

"Mist in May and heat in June brings all things into tune"
"A dripping June keeps all in tune"
Welcome to June! Whether it be hot or dripping, may your June be entirely in tune.
Pictures from A Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady by Edith Holden. It's a book to keep as a constant companion throughout the year. So much beauty and knowledge is contained within.

Book review: The Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady by Edith Holden
This is a facsimile copy of Edith Holden's nature journal from 1906. It was published posthumously (she sadly drowned in the Thames, supposedly while trying to reach for chestnut branches) . It contains short entries about the fauna and flora she saw while wandering the English countryside, along with beautiful illustrations of them. Interspersed throughout are also facts about the organisms featured and various bits of poetry. It doesn't contain much about her personal life other than the surroundings she observed, but nevertheless it gives a very clear idea about the kind of person she was. I'm glad I bought this at the used bookstore and wish I had a nice coffee table to display it on.

Seb if we're gonna talk unhinged thoughts/thots, I've got a bit of an unhinged comedy one for you (lol).
Rhett and wifey are getting ready for Easter services so they can get home and relax. Amy and the girls all look so pretty in their new dresses and the littlest boys all look so handsome and so doesn't Rhett but as soon as everyone's ready to go out the door, Rhett walks into the living room and freezes because there are the oldest boys, yours and Rhett's twins, with chocolate and peanut butter all over their faces because they just dove into their Easter candy and Rhett's praying for them to sit still just enough and behave until you guys get home (lol).
Seb, I hope you guys had a very Happy Easter and some spring sunshine to boot. I was gonna also tell you I found a little something while I was book searching that might be right up your alley. It's called "The Country Diary Of An Edwardian Lady" and it's full of all the nature drawings that the author Edith Holden made when she was living in the rural areas of Warwickshire as well as her journal entries. If ever I can find the link for it I can certainly send it your way as long as you're ok with it (lol).
ehehe that really did make me giggle my love 🤭 half the struggle is getting preacher rhett and your lil’ ones out the door in the first place!
thank you so much for this sweet thought my love and for your easter wishes! i hope you had a lovely easter yourself, with sun too i hope! 🥹 we had some sun, mostly rain :( but that book! godddd! i looked it up and it unlocked some vague memory for me? i can’t quite pin point it, but i wouldn’t be surprised if we had some of her illustrations. they’re gorgeous! thank you so much for letting me know about that too! i know warwickshire relatively well too 🥹 mwah! 💗💌

Every time I go into this shop I find the exact book I’ve just heard of/wishlisted. Second hand book shops are magical, there is no other rational explanation.

Mo-Mo I come bearing a little Bungalow!Bob gift for you, it's not much but I was thinking of you when it came (lol).
It's one of those gorgeous days in spring that feels like summer already and of course Bob is out in the garden trying to plant and landscape to make it look pretty for spring and to make the neighborhood shrew jealous beyond all human reasoning. His Meemaw decides to come over and help since she's an expert gardener. She knows all the ins and outs of how everything grows, what colors will go with what, what needs full sun, partial sun and complete shade. She's thoroughly impressed with the greenhouse of course and you and Meemaw spend more time in there than you can keep track of.
She also leaves you and Bob with a little gift too. It's a copy of Edith Holden's "Country Diary Of An Edwardian Lady" (definitely check that book out, it's so worth it) and also the medicine book that Bob's grandfather made when he was with the Marines in Korea about all the native plants, their uses and all kinds of drawings and blurbs (some of which are hilarious) that were all in the hand of Bob's grandpa.
Mary, this is so cute 😭😭 legitimately having a little sob over the medicine book with all the hand drawings
I'd love to think Meemaw comes over every Sunday for tea in the garden while correcting any gardening that's gone awry 🪻
Love, love, love a bungalow!Bob gift!
