Phillip thought of the circus, of himself and Phineas, as we.
“Our gate is down. We have more protestors everyday.”
When Phineas replies, “You just need to get more people to come back”, it’s an active effort to emotionally distance himself from the circus and from Phillip, and Phillip’s response is as impassioned as he allows himself to be at that point in the film, where he’s still biting back and stifling and repressing so much of himself:
“They come to see you.”
Because he’s desperate to get Phineas to stay. To deter him from the path of self-destruction Phineas is so determined to steer himself down. But, also because “they” obscures what Phillip, immediately utterly enraptured with Phineas and everything he represents, really meant:
“I can’t do this without you. I need you”.
After Phineas returns and Phillip offers him everything he has left in a proposal to fix what was broken and give his newfound family a home, again, he does so on the grounds that he and Phineas become partners. Equals. We.
And, Phineas accepts. “Building, we don’t need a building. All we need is a tent!”
He affirms that he and Phillip and all of the other beautiful people he brought together are a unit. A  team. A family.
And, that is why Phineas leaving the circus and the family he cultivated there, leaving Phillip behind, again, no matter how good his reason for doing so, is not the happy ending it’s intended to be.

watched the Greatest Showman last night
and as someone who watches/reads historical fiction (and fiction from 1800s and 1900s) it was...... interesting
obviously if it was totally accurate then today's modern audience wouldn't recieve it well.
i think my biggest pet peeve was that its meant to take place around the middle 1800s, before electricity, and I kept spotting electric lights in a few scenes
also the fact that the famous singer was an opera singer but she wasn't singing opera, it was modern music.
okay fine, another pet peeve was the historical dress, they did kinda okay on all the mens clothing but the women's clothing was utterly inaccurate for the time period. plus the opera singers hair was constantly down, which just wasn't done by high society of the time
okay, got it out of my system
all of that aside, Hugh Jackman is my pretend husband and he can do whatever he wants so i give the movie a pass. Even with getting so many historical details wrong, it was an enjoyable movie

Say what you will about The Greatest Showman being about a horrendous monster (P.T. Barnum IRL) but that movie couldn't have come at a better time for self confidence.
We live in an era were visibility online is so prominent that people are developing body dysmorphia more and more often, and having self confidence issues with their appearance. They harm themselves through various means to get rid of their dysmorphia and confidence issues.
But here comes this musical about P.T. Barnum's circus, rewritten to include an incredible concept of "You shouldn't hide because of what other people think of you, what everyone else thinks about your appearance. Those 'oddities' are beautiful, and are proof that you are who you're supposed to be."
"This Is Me" became my best friend's favorite song - and was featured in her slide on our HS's graduation slideshow - because of the lyrics, the context, and the way the actress was known to cry every single time she sang it because it hit so close to home.

We all know about P.T Barnum. About Mr. Carlyle and Anne wheeler. About Charles and Lettie. Chang and Eng. even about W.D and the Lord of Leeds!
Mr. Barnum loves his circus as if family. Their are so, in a matter of ways. And although certain acts may be highlighted, no one is ever overlooked.
This is a story about those background characters that never speak and are barely given names.
(Mainly the Albinos. But will contain smidgens of others)

Introducing the incredible, indomitable, amazing, flying Fairy Floss! After re-reading some of Calen’s posts I was inspired to make an Au of my own that I like to call the FreakShow Au! This Au takes place in 1870s America, as we follow the traveling Star Palace Circus and it’s various human oddities. My main inspirations for this Au were “The Greatest Showman”, American Horror Story’s “Freak Show” and the 1931 film “Freaks”. We get to explore a colorful cast from all different walks of life as we watch their stories unfold, aswell as figure out how the came to be in such a rinky dink little show!
As always, please feel free to ask me about the Au!

The Greatest Showman (2017)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Review:
The story of P.T. Barnum, a real showman who organised shows which feature the abnormal throughout the 1800s, is told in the star studded musical, The Greatest Showman. With the cast of Hugh Jackman, Zac Efron and Zendaya the film was almost guaranteed to be a smash hit. Personally, I am not one who favours musicals (unless it is Lars von Trier’s Dancer in the Dark) but, objectively The Greatest Showman boasts a soundtrack of memorable songs along beautifully choreographed dance numbers and trapeze acts. The positivity of the film and its overall message that there is strength in community positions it in a manner which is emphatic on the concept on embracing diversity and that there is place of safety for people of any shape, size or colour.
Problematique?:
The Greatest Showman being a fictionalised account of history is of course allowed to take some creative liberty in the telling of the story but, it becomes problematic when the plot begins to idolise a real person and industry which were, in reality, increasingly exploitative. The real Barnum, a bankrupt shopkeeper, initially made his ascent to fame and fortune after he purchased an 80-year-old Black woman to display as an oddity under the guise of a “160-year-old ‘mammy’” (Washington 2017). Barnum publicly wrote about how he took advantage of the woman’s addiction to alcohol and extracted her teeth while she was under the influence to give more validity to the farce of her age (Washington 2017). His exploitation of Black people as a sideshow abnormality to make money extended into his enslavement of Ella Williams as his ‘African Giantess’ and conjoined twins as a medical oddity (Washington 2017). The glamourisation of a history that erases any horror committed against Black people in the way that The Greatest Showman does is an intense act of denial with undertones of white supremacy.

what do you find most attractive in a person?
Their personality. You can be beautiful to behold but if you have a bad personality it will stain the surface like oil on water.
I admire bravery, of the type that can be found in even the smallest of gestures. You do not need to lift a weapon in a battlefield in order to face down an enemy. I respect loyalty, and kindness, and would not waste time on a person who lacked either quality.
If we are talking purely of physical matters, I have always been more drawn to the female form. I find gentle curves and soft skin more alluring than the harsh outlines of a man. Blondes are not common where I come from, and I find them to be quite beautiful. I have also had acquaintances with a few redhaired vixens in my time - prior to meeting Rosie, of course. They are exotic to me.
