"Suzume" – The Movie for Everyone Who Didn't Get What "Your Name" Was All About
I love, I really, really love Makoto Shinkai's 2016 anime movie "Your Name", because aside from telling an absolute blast of a perfectly entertaining body-swap romance story that en passant tackles hot topics like gender roles and urban versus rural life (which alone would make it a close-to-perfection mainstream movie), it also manages to find the perfect metaphor for an indescribable loss, for a kind of grief so profoundly that it cannot be put into words. And although never mentioned in the movie, for me it was always clear that the central catastrophe of "Your Name" directly alludes to the Great Tōhoku Earthquake and Tsunami that started on 11 March of 2011. Which for me made this movie into a great piece of art for generations to come.
Enter "Suzume", another anime movie by Makoto Shinkai. About dealing with the aftermath of catastrophic events. A movie that directly states that the central trauma of its main protagonist can be traced back to a specific day 12 years ago. A day in march. And yes it is stated which exact date in march it was. Guess the number. Yeah, that one.
I won't lie, the way this was revealed in the movie was a pretty darn strong moment. It was foreshadowed throughout the whole movie, it was stated more and more clearly, and it still struck me quite a bit when it was finally revealed. Because Makoto Shinkai is a fucking genius of a director who just knows how to tell a story. But still. I admit to being a bit disappointed by the lack of subtlety that "Suzume" revealed here.
Plus, the resulting plot leaves a bit of a weird aftertaste. As one Japanese reviewer whom I watched on Youtube mentioned, one of the narration's implications is that most earthquakes in Japan have a supernatural cause that can be avoided if certain gifted people resolve some kind of emotional imbalance in the area. Which is a fascinating idea that – like all of Shinkai's movies that I know – is wonderfully deeply rooted in Japanese Shinto religion. But it still results in a weird mix of mainstream fiction and real-life tragedy. Maybe as if one was told that the Winchester brothers of "Supernatural" would have been responsible to prevent the Columbine school shooting, or that Marvel's Avengers should have prevented the September 11 Attacks. It's just a bit weird to me.
On the other hand, I heard Makoto Shinkai talk about his inspirations in an interview, and he pointed out that his main motivation for "Suzume" was him finding out that many people that watched "Your Name" did not understand its relation to the 2011 Tōhoku Earthquake, and that, even more dramatically, a lot of young people – abroad as well as in Japan! – seemed to never have heard of this tragedy. So yeah, I understand him. And I can accept that "Suzume" might be an important film, and a great addition to "Your Name". I guess it's just that I'd sometimes prefer to live in a world where things don’t need to be spelled out to be understood.
However. All my whining about a lack of subtlety and potentially weird aftertastes aside, "Suzume" is one heck of a ride. From its marvellous first scene that blends into the title screen with a verve that I have not seen for years, to the lovely "what happens to the protagonist next" animations that accompany the credits, "Suzume" is a marvellously animated movie bursting with beautiful images, clever foreshadowings and heartbreaking tributes to the remnants of past disasters. It is what Makoto Shinkai can do best: A perfect mix of mainstream fun and hot topic commentary. Most likely the best fantasy dramedy romance road movie of the next years to come!
One detail still bothers me though. It's something that already annoyed me in Shinkai's previous film, "Weathering with You": While most products depicted in "Suzume" are just clever allusions to real brands (e.g., we have POKKA sweets instead of POCKY, and – my personal favourite! – BEIKO clocks instead of SEIKO ones), there is one scene in the middle where Suzume goes hitchhiking and the family she travels with makes a lunch break at some burger place. And, gosh, that scene really that goes immense lengths to assure that even. the. dullest. goshdarn. audience. member. will notice this burger place to be FUCKING MCDONALD'S. Just… Why?
Anyway, if you have the chance to watch "Suzume", do give it a try. Especially if you know and love "Your Name". And if you can view it at a cinema, then go for it! The sound alone is worth the ticket, and gosh those pictures!
Just… do me a favor and don't visit McDonald's afterwards, yes?

I’m Proud of You
Dean Winchester x Reader
Warnings: Mild angst, mild whump, allusions to depression, slight trigger warning.
Word Count: 1062
Summary: The worst of monsters will eat away at your mind.
A/N: As you can probably tell, I’m both projecting some recent emotions into this work and, am not used to writing fluff. Also, please leave a like or reblog; or both!
Tumblr media
Silent killers were rare in your life. Monsters were not so gifted in the art of subtlety after all, especially not to the trained ear. But this monster, this one was different. It took its time, with no life of its own, it could wait forever, it would wait forever. No two books told of it the same way; some claimed it was like a parasite, feeding off its, victims and draining their energy yet keeping it alive to prolong its own life. Others told of killer, almost like a dijnn, planting falsities in its victims heads so that the victim took no notice of it while it drained them of life.
Others still claimed they were demons; possessing their host and only showing itself at the most dire of times.
No matter what way the books explained it, it did not help; neither Sam nor Dean cold get a solid idea of this monster, and, more importantly, the way to kill it.
It was evening, and Sam Winchester had been in the library for hours, not an uncommon sight in the bunker. It was more rare, however for his older brother to join him. Dean Winchester was always on the go and didn’t get the same information from books as Sam, he was more the hands on type. It came as no surprise then that Dean was returning to continue research only after having another look at the victim.
He was sullen as he entered the library, eyes darkened and pained and shoulder slumped in defeat.
Sam glanced up, face illuminated by his laptop. “How’s she doing?”
“No better, no worse.”
Sam nodded as Dean plunked down in the chair across from him, pulling his own laptop towards him.
The Men of Letters had very few books on this kind of monster, so the brothers were forced to rely on the internet.
As the minutes ticked by, Dean was starting to feel more and more hopeless. Every page he clicked was a dead end; filled with information that they knew, or techniques they had tried, or complete bullshit.
Not even Cas or Jack had been able to help you, for this was a monster neither could fight.
Dean was starting to feel like he couldn’t fight it either.
-
You didn’t say a word when he walked in. The blankets he had tucked over and around you remained as they had been when he had left. Still you stared at your hand.
“Hey sweetheart, how’re you doing?”
You were silent for a moment, then hummed.
“M’fine.”
Dean didn’t protest, he knew you weren’t, but it was pointless to argue, it would only make you feel worse. Slowly, carefully, he approached the bed. In one hand he had your meds, the other, a glass of water.
He set them down and slid a gentle hand under your head lifting it to pull the pillows upwards. He brought forth his other and gently coaxed her into a sitting position.
Once the pills were in your mouth, he brought the water to your lips, tipping it until you pulled away, swallowing.
The glass clicked against the nightstand.
Smooth hand over your head and laid a gentle kiss on your forehead.
“Good job sweetheart,” he kept his voice soft and positive, using one hand to lift you again and push the pillows back into a suitable position. “I’m gonna go take a quick shower, okay? I won’t be long” You said nothing, simply blinking your eyes shut and letting out another hum.
-
Steam fogged billowed around him, fogging up the mirrors and lights.
He had forgotten to turn the fan on.
He didn’t really care. Sam had always berated him for that, saying that the moisture would ruin the paint and walls.
It seemed almost laughable that he would notice it now, but as your condition got worse and worse, it seemed every little thing done improperly or that was wrong stuck out like a sore thumb.
As the hot water trickled down his face, he barely noticed he was crying.
-
When he returned, your eyes were shut, face relaxed. He tossed his clothes in the hamper, taking off his ‘dead-guy’ robe. Carefully, gently, he eased into bed, settling down beside you he wrapped an arm over you, reaching it under the pillow to where he hid his gun. The other wormed its way under your neck to cradle you closer.
Slightly roused, you cuddled back into his warmth and he, in return, leaned into you, both of you so desperately seeking the comfort of each other. You felt guilty that your depression was affecting him so deeply, yet he continued to assure you that he was fine.
Dean, on the other hand, was cursing himself for not noticing your symptoms sooner, regardless of whether you blamed him or not. He was supposed to take care of you.
“I’m sorry.”
The apology had Deans head shooting up as he leaned back to look at you.
“What?”
“I’m sorry.”
“Y/N, what the hell are you talking about?”
Twisting your head you found the glint of his eyes in the darkened room.
“I-I know you’re affected by me, I know it, and I’m sorry that I’m bringing you down,” you could feel tears welling up in your eyes. “You’re working so hard, and y-your not- your not taking care of yourself…”
“Sweetheart…” Deans arms wrapped tighter around you and he held you close to him for several moments.
“You have nothing to be sorry for, okay? I’m proud of you, I’m so damn proud of you. You’re fighting so hard. You don’t have to worry about me, okay, when you feel better, I’ll feel better too, okay?”
You said nothing, taking in a breath to protest, then dismissing it, simply nodding into his chest instead.
“Good girl.”
He smoothed a hand over your hair, not in the least tased by the greasiness that coated his fingers as the two of you settled back down. The room was still as the minutes ticked away, both of you tired, yet neither one ready to sleep.
Then, softly, so softly that even in the silence Dean barely heard it, you whispered something. You didn’t turn to him, simply murmured the words, yet he cuddled you closer, pressing a kiss on your cheekbone.
“I love you too, Sweetheart.”

Season 10 episode 1
- SAM WHAT THE FUCK
Tumblr media
YES^^
- I may have slightly forgotten that Dean is MIA and Sam has to deal with that
- CAS!!
- WHAT A LOOK OMG
- I may have also slightly forgotten that Cas is dying
Tumblr media
“I miss him.” HE WAS IN LOVE WITH DEAN HERE. HE WAS LYING IN BED THINKING ABOUT DEAN HERE BECAUSE HE MISSES HIM. GLASS.
- is... is Dean doing karaoke
- DEAN JUST DID THE “jerk” “bitch” WITH CROWLEY WHAT
- *sigh* hi Hannah
- every time Cas is wearing something other then his normal outfit Dean isn’t there to see it and I think that counts as a hate crime
- I feel like I should know who this is but I don’t
- WOW Dean jfc
- poor Sam
- I don’t like that Cas is dying
- “your brother and I were beginning to wonder if you’d hit another dog!” AHJSJAJAJKS
- “Dean Winchester completes me” wow Crowley
- Cas and Hannah look like genderbent versions of each other
- they should’ve let Jackles grow his hair out more often
Tumblr media
- “you lied.” “Who do you think you’re talking to here?” THEYRE LITERALLY HAVING A LOVERS QUARREL I LOVE THEM
- CROWLEY TALKING ABOUT HOW HE AND DEAN CANONICALLY HAD ORGIES IS NOT SOMETHING I WAS EXPECTING TO HEAR TODAY YET
- “all that’s blossomed between us never ends.” Crowley is obviously in love with Dean? I didn’t... I didn’t expect it to be so outright. There’s literally no subtlety here
- this is really funny bc Jensen can actually sing he’s just,,, not
- “I protected your honour didn’t I?” he’s a demon but still baby
- CAS NO
- since Cas keeps killing angels anyway why doesn’t he just take their grace while he’s at it
- “nothing but chaos. Not all bad comes from it. Art. Hope. Love. Dreams.” “But... those are human things.” “Yes.” AND THEN IT CUTS TO DEAN IM LOSING MY MIND
- DEAN NO GO SAVE SAM

WITHOUT FURTHER ADO, HERE ARE JUNE’S ANGEL FISH AWARDS!
Nominated by @wingedcatninja and @mrswhozeewhatsis and @manawhaat
The Song Remains the Same (oneshot) by @sammit-janet
@wingedcatninja said -  This fic by @sammit-janet is the best case fic I have ever read. It has everything: drama, angst, a witch curse, perfect characterization. Reading it was like being inside an episode of Supernatural. And, without spoiling anything, the ending broke my heart. To quote my own comment when I reblogged it:
“I don’t even know where to start. The story is fantastic. The prose is beautiful. The characterization is on point. The angst is delightfully painful. It’s just overall amazing. Thank you for sharing this awesome piece of art.”
@mrswhozeewhatsis said -  The painful ingenuity of the spell in this case fic is genius. Pure freaking genius! Painful as hell, but genius. Characterization is wonderful, as always, and my heart is a little more broken, but I’m used to that with Sammit!! Brava!!!! *throws roses at you*
@manawhaat said-  WOW! That was fucking awesome! We see witch spells so often and (maybe it’s bc of the genre I’m reading but) they’re always like lust spells of some sort, so it was super refreshing to see this kind of spell. This whole thing was just really well done, super interesting, perfectly in character and the realm of spn. And that last little bit. UGH! SO PERFECT! So Dean! So spot on! So fitting and heartbreaking and such a perfect little add on. I swear, this whole thing legit felt like I watched an episode of the show. This case fic is a perfect example of how I want every fic to read. I want the drama, the suspense, the emotion, the subtleties, the Winchesters as they truly are, this kind of gentle care for detail and attention to creating a realistic feel. I can’t say it enough- this is fucking FANTASTIC!
Nominated by @wingedcatninja
Never Wanna Say Goodbye (oneshot) by @deanwinchesterswitch
This is deliciously painful angst that leaves you with tears in your eyes and a smile on your lips.
Nominated by @risingphoenix761
Salty Stockings (oneshot) by @slytherkins
Cute, hilarious, and just the right amount of crack. Also risque and suggestive. Did I mention this is hilarious? So much good stuff in a short fic, and imagine if anyone suggested Dean take this with him on a hunt!
Nominated by @manawhaat
True or False (oneshot) by @thegirlwhorunswithwinchesters
The way this starts instantly pulls you in. There’s so much pent up shit rattling through Dean and the way it’s reciprocated through Y/n is an amazing build. There’s so much emotion and vulnerability to this entire thing, and it’s done in a way that’s completely believable and realistic for Dean. Fuck. It’s smart and really just opens them both up in such a refreshing way that speaks of Dean’s bravery, even in the face of being raw and exposed to someone else. And the way the tables turn. *screeches and flaps on the floor* Be still my fucking heart! I fucking adore this and the way you approached this fic and premise. There are so many ways it could have gone wrong or lost its power and impact, but you fucking nailed it!
Covet (series) by @waywardjoy
Fucking Christ, this series stressed me the fuck out, but in the best way possible. The cliffhangers, the dark grittiness. The insanity! Fuck, I absolutely love it when stories are written in a way that completely immerse me in it. It’s dark, like, really dark. Fuck. It just hurts.
The Beginning of The End (oneshot) by @deanwinchesterswitch
OW! There is a secret desperation in this that is absolutely brutal and tears your heart in two. The way Dean is written is eye-opening and really just drags you down into a depth of pain and grief that only a Winchester can feel. I feel like I should say something about the sex being hot, but I can’t. Because to me it’s just so rough, borderline too rough, and so emotional. Which might sound weird, but in this situation and with the way everything is presented that scene is honest as fuck, very believable, and powerful. At some point things become more about the emotional release than they do being sexy, and this is a gorgeous example of that kind of repressed emotion roaring to life in ‘bottle it up forever’ Dean Winchester. This fic hurts so good all the way through and in different ways. That in itself is a feat, so have so many layers in one story. It’s anger and hurt and guilt and worry and all of it is wrapped so delicately together in this fucking stunning piece of art.
Born This Way (oneshot) by @evansrogerskitten
HAPPY PRIDE MOTHER FUCKERS!!!!!! This fuckin’ fic! Wow. This is the definition of the spn family. There’s so much love and support wrapped up in this story, in this fucking dream. I rarely get like, actually emotional reading fics (because I’m a heartless bitch) but this has me sitting here clutching my chest with my eyes closed just full body squeeing and smiling and my gut is clenching with all the emotion. There is something to be said of the spn family being allies. This song, this setting, this family, and the moment you’ve created here is so important and such a special thing! AND, as if the fic itself wasn’t enough to make me burst into happy tears, the tweets at the bottom sure the fuck were! Honestly, everything about this is so spot on and believable and just fucking pure and good.
Castiel Imagine (drabble) by @webcricket
Holy hell, that Cas fic was not only incredibly fucking sensual and well done but it was just so full of amazing language. Fantastic! I feel like a lot of writers who try to beef up their language tend to use words that feel out of place, but your consistency and the way you weave them together made me slow down to savor every line and that was such a beautiful thing.
Nominated by @sorenmarie87
Life for Rent (series) by @winchest09
The series has just started but I can’t wait to see where it goes.  I love a good mobster!au and the set up so far has me wondering what’s going to happen next.
What Research? (oneshot) by @becs-bunker
What do I say about this other than I loved it?  I mean Sam has been busy and the reader just wants some attention from him. Of course, they accomplish what they set out to do and it’s worth the read.
Born This Way by @evansrogerskitten
This was a fantastic fic. The reader has the casts approval and support, and the way they came out was fantastic. I almost cried, no lie. Ash’s fics are always fantastic but this hit me in an unsuspected way.
Once Upon A Dream (oneshot) by @welldonebeca
I haven’t honestly seen that many Human!Gabe fics let alone Alpha!Gabe at that.  The story is so sweet.
Fallen Productions (series) by @welldonebeca
I always admire authors who can write A/B/O but this mini series works its way through the original Team Free Will in a different way.
He Is (series) by @coffee-obsessed-writer
This whole series is super sweet. Each chapter shows just what Dean means to you, and Jen nails it in each of them.
Make You Feel My Love (series) by @sofreddie
This was such a sweet A/B/O series.  I love that Dean and the reader took their time, I mean Dean eased her through her earlier heats but I think it was sweet that it was just smut off the bat.
Nominated by @iflostreturntosteverogers
Almond Milk Lies (series) by @fictionalabyss
Mel is a fantastic writer 💕
Nominated by @shy-violet-soul
The Girl Next Door (series) by @luci-in-trenchcoats
An engaging AU, this writer keeps you hooked with well-paced timing & plot. Portrayal of characters is consistent with the show, which other fics struggle with when not in the SPN world. The story line is believable and genuine, and I enjoy the banter between the 2 main pairing-folks. Bravo!
Sunsets by @crispychrissy
Damn. This work is so beautifully painful, or painfully beautiful, it’s hard to find words. I don’t want to comment on a favorite part to avoid giving away the plot. But this writer has captured a lesser-written character powerfully and consistently, and hooks you in with strong imagery and pacing. Hold on to your heartstrings for this one.
Tumblr media
Thank you all for the awesome work and great feedback!
As with the BFAs, these are not actual awards! This system is set up so everyone in the pond has a chance to share the love and promote a fic/author that has grabbed your attention. The more people that participate, and the more everyone remembers to submit their own fics after posting, the better this will be :D
THANK YOU ALL AGAIN, KEEP UP THE AMAZING WORK, AND AS ALWAYS, HAPPY WRITING!

i’m too soft™ for this
03:26pm
i am NOT READY in any way, shape or form
but i have a standard-quality video file and a 720p one is downloading slowly
i saw the promo video thing, dean’s phone battery died and i swear my heart died with it
i’m with cas on the “no suicide please” train
on the one hand, this is a deadly duo episode and i don’t trust them. BUT, they have been less awful recently. so. i’m like. expecting some gay. but that gay is ultimately gonna feel like queerbaiting, right?? LET’S HOPE NOT
fingers crossed for real gay, just in case i jinx it by doubting it

HERE GOES

03:31
the box underwater
THIS BETTER BE A DREAM

03:32
THE TERROR ON DEAN’S FACE IS MAKING MY HEART POUND I DON’T LIKE THIS ONE LITTLE BIT
-
03:33
the blood on the walls from his fingers
jeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeez
;~;
-
03:34
so far enjoying the directing here
dean’s got a red light saying nope, not changing his mind
sam’s behind him every step of the way
now sam’s trying to build a bridge between them (art on the wall)
Tumblr media
-
03:38
just............ sitting here............. recoiling constantly from the screen while this dude does whatever he’s doing to his girl
deeply uncomfortable
-
03:41
so dean hasn’t even told cas and jack
oh man
-
03:42
OH MAN SAM ALREADY TOLD CAS
OH MAN
-
03:42
the fact dean shoulders open the bathroom door without touching it and dries his hands on his jeans is a) so beautiful, and b) so relatable
-
03:45
the guy with the knife again
i winced away from the screen so hard i pulled a muscle in my neck
goddamn i forget how wearing earbud headphones means i can’t just close my ears or move away from the distressing noise

04:14pm
switching to 720p because the download’s finally done
also do women actually wear those kinds of frilly night gowns??? or is that just what people imagine “lady life partner who died violently in the night to further the manpain” to wear
-
04:17
sarah: “you wanted him... you still do.... you didn’t come here to find peace, you came here to the place where you became one with him”
sounds gay and evil
-
04:19
sarah: “you can’t.... because you are him”
i mean that makes sense, if an angel is in a host for a long time and does the same acts over and over and feels certain emotions, the host’s brain pathways would form that way, to continue doing and feeling those things
but also i guess nick said yes in the first place, and continued to allow lucifer to use him, because he was that way inclined to begin with
......you know, by the same logic, jimmy probably had feelings for dean tbh
-
04:22
i kept expecting sarah to explode in a justified ghostly rage and set the walls on fire
but here we are..........
not with a bang but with a whimper

the end screen is white from the impala lights and i’m crying this was beautiful and perfect and HOW THE FUCK DID THE DEADLY DUO PULL THIS OFF
thAT PARALLEL BETWEEN DONATELLO AND DEAN THOUGH
THAT WAS LIKE...... ACTUAL WRITING
this was great??????/ and i’m emotional??????/ more emotional that i have been for ...um, pretty much every episode for like... 2 or 3 seasons, maybe
this was a 10/10 easily
jeeeez the suicide thing and sam talking dean out of it
look
y’all know how much i love dean and cas, and seeing them in the same place at the same time
but sam’s moment at the end was the best part of this whole thing
.........but. also.
i feel like dean and cas had a scene cut. as always. there was something missing there that i feel we were promised and didn’t get. please god let us get an actual conversation between them??? about their feelings for each other????????? it kind of sickens me that we haven’t had that yet. and it’s clearly almost happening, again and again and again and it’s definitely a romance trope, interrupted before they confess their feelings
a high point: dean and sam saved the asian kid from being killed by fire, that was both good and cool and i was very relieved
i’m a bit frustrated that nick is still ... happening
but at the same time, i find nick like 350% more interesting and enjoyable to watch than lucifer
there was a lot going on in this episode, as there always is in the buckleming episodes, but i watched in stops and starts because of cats and food and the wind slamming my door and my sister texting me, so if there were pacing issues i didn’t notice. it seemed pretty smooth to me idk
but i did really enjoy this, besides the gruesome murders and latino murdery guy (who was the best friend of the older twin brother (dean parallel), technically making the murdery guy a cas parallel?) killing people in horrible ways and then killing himself :/
also dean saying the guy was a psycho and then punching him out felt a liiittle bit like “people with mental health issues are evil and dangerous” and that felt uncomfortable EVEN THOUGH the guy WAS a bad murdery sort, and the whole episode was clearly also about helping people with depression or suicidal designs for themselves.
(now i type all this out, i’m realising the underlying messages of this episode were kind of messy. just a bit.)
edit: OR maybe that was dean’s self-hatred talking
(how and why did the next prophet in line have an enochian tattoo, if the pick is random? was it just coincidence? or did he get that tattoo after donatello started whispering to him?)
sarah...... she was clearly angry, and ghosts that’ve been around a long time tend to get verrrry angry, as i recall? she could’ve done some angry ghost stuff, that would’ve been more satisfying maybe (but on the other hand, the quietness of nick’s exit was also impactful)
i enjoyed the transition of red lights and backdrops throughout the episode to yellow and white, and then the green in the room at the end
anyway. yes. really did expect more on the dean-and-cas front, but i also expected to be let down, so i don’t really know where i stand on that. i just want more of them interacting in general ;~;
next week: MORE EMOTIONS!!!! YAY

Tips to Buck Up the Web Designers Out of Their Irksome Web Design Process
When you are running a web design business, it is very important for you to understand that your clients are the part and parcel of your business. The type of clients you agree upon to work with speaks a lot about you and your web design firm. Similarly, the grounds on which they delegated the responsibility on you to produce a design speaks a lot about them. Maintaining a good relationship with the client is though a hard nut to crack, but a lot of it spins around the web designers' knack to edify their customers and set expectations so that both sides end up with gratification.
Many of the designers go off the beaten track in a way to gratify their clients. They make continual edits, re-designing, Last minute changes, moreover the add-in features that had never been discussed. Web designers just give in to each and every caprice of their clients but then at the end they end up getting underpaid and feeling frustrated, rebuffed and jaded.
Most web designers might relate this to worst example in a web design process. There are a few absurd expectations for a project to go quickly and smoothly. The minute these expectation ruins out of delays in the completion of the project or the bad designs or due to the coding bugs, etc., both the client and the web designer as well gets irked. Nevertheless, there is a trick out of which you can make your irksome design process a pleasant experience for you and your client as well. Edifying your clients is not a great part of your business project but you can make certain that it will aid you greatly in recuperating the working relationship with your client.
Wondering what tags along a general list of some significant lessons that must outline the scaffold for the education process? Well, a few key points are brought into a limelight below:
Tip 1: You are a Professional Designer, Not a Laborer
People never tell their Doctor's and electricians how they need to do their jobs. They understand that the doctors and electricians obviously more on familiar terms with their respective field of work than them. This attitude on the other hand ought to persist with the webmasters too. Many clients have a set mind that just browsing through the websites qualifies the webmasters to make design decisions. They treat web designer as the annex of their brains. And because of this kind of false premonition the designers are often wrongly taken as the laborers who are born to get their task done, and not the professionals who are creative and talented with the skills and experience that others professionals to might have in their area of work. Moreover, the clients forget that the Web Designers too are the part of the design process equally.
This pathetic situation occurs generally in the case of freelancers where the clients presume that if the designers don't have their office then they can work in any odd hour of the day too as if they don't have their family or other things around to be taken care of!
Thus it is imperative for the web designers to make certain that their clients understand that they are experts and that their opinions are grounded in the research before the web design process initiates.
Tip 2: Communication is Vital
Lack of communication can often badly ruin the whole of the project. Generally, the clients tend to keep themselves involved and vocal in the initial stage of the project. This as a result ends up with the designers' belief that the things are going well until when the clients hand over them the laundry list of edits.
So, bringing this clause under the contract that you might need your client's feedback throughout the project from an issue as large as payments and billings to the minuscule subjects like the color combinations etc. so that you can generate a better product in less time period.
Tip 3: The Web and the Print Medium are like chalk and cheese
There are some of the clients who are going through the web design process for the first time and web is a strange and foreign place for them whilst there are a few who are incapable of figuring out the difference between the print medium and the web.
There are also a few clients who want their website to represent itself just like a brochure of their product or services.
Therefore, being an expert of this design arena, it's the designer's responsibility to enlighten their clients about the things like their website can be very well fabricated like a brochure as per their desire but doing this might fail to plug the real power of the internet eventually setting them up as the failure on the web. The web designer's having their lives almost certainly been spent surfing the web should never take these little things for granted. Edifying the clients over the nuance and the subtlety of the web can help aid the wrong illusions that the clients might have.
Thus, to wrap-up, the art of learning the management of clients is a major challenge for any service-oriented business. If one wants to maintain good working relationships then, edifying clients are one of the wisest ways. Web designing is an essential fragment of the service-industry and thus follows the same rules. The toughest job to do ever is to stand up your client or boss but as a matter of fact doing this regularly can make your irksome website process a pleasant experience for yourself and for your clients as well.

This out of the whole project, has to be my favourite for the colours and gentle subtlety of it.
Inspired by Dan Hays’ take to art, i decided to delete certain sections of my work to distort the image.
In doing this through Photoshop, the software blended the image across the deleted section in a variety of ways in which i chose, to fill the void that would have been there.
This was to imply how altered our perception of a scene can be through technology, and how we only get an impression of what was originally there.

dusttcdusk answered your ask: crowley
time spent with the angel had been surprisingly pleasant. perhaps if circumstances were different, they could have truly been friends or maybe even more. but as it stood they both remained on opposite sides, despite what he had led castiel to believe. everything done was to assure his assent. which meant that for now he would play the role he needed to in order to gain the angel as an ally. use him so that he would also gain the winchesters as pawns in his game.
head tilts, darkened gaze recognizing all the signs castiel had failed to keep hidden. it would seem that the angel had yet to master the art of subtlety. hand curls around his neck, thumb brushing across the heated skin of his cheek before pulling him into a kiss. where before this had been done as a means of sealing a deal, this time was done as a means of keeping the angel as his own.  a pure exploitation of feelings the angel wore on his sleeve. had things been different, maybe this too could have been different. but he was far too gone to be saved by an angel, not even castiel.
Curse him and his black magic lips. He knew what to do...he always did. He knew how to play him like a piano, expert finger’s gliding over his skin, hands firm and gentle coiling around his slender frame. No blades, no angel traps. Crowley could reign him in with a touch, with a look more than any steel or torture could ever do...an Castiel just let him do it. The moment the demon tugged him close, he was at his mercy, eyes hooded with question and the silent curiosity he always had in those dark ocean blues.
His lips parted with a shaky whisper of Crowley’’s name and just like that he was being pulled into the devilish lips that seduced him with ease. The entranced angel melted into the lip lock, hand going to anchor themselves at the demon’s suit’s lapels, keeping them there as their lip explored one another. Cas needily kissed him back, eyes falling shut with a flutter of dark lashes. He was completely and utterly lost to Crowley’’s whims.

Prompt: Destiel, Dean developes an unhealthy obsession with sneakily giving castiel presents, without him noticing
It started out pretty nice. Someone had stuck a post card through the crack of Castiel’s locker and it was a bit crimped and it might even have been second hand, but it had a big, beautiful bee on it and on the back it said: “Thought you might like it”. It was a sweet gift, it was personal, it was every inch perfect. Except. Castiel didn’t know who’d given it to him.
Then, somehow it got better. Castiel started receiving small gifts every once in a while, always something very thoughtful and very “Castiel”. They started showing up in his bag, on his desk in class, in his drawer in art. Small things, nothing much. At one point it was just a poem by one of Castiel’s favourite writers. But Castiel still couldn’t figure out who gave them to him, and he was starting to feel like maybe he should know, or at least he should be able to figure it out. Gabriel said he already knew who was giving them, but he’d be dead set on not letting it slip who. And Anna had been just as helpful, letting him know with just a smug smile that there was no question she knew as well. Castiel had never been good at bribing so his siblings were just going to keep the secret until Castiel found out on his own. Castiel hoped that the mystery person would reveal themselves soon.
Things got out of hand when he started getting things in the pockets of the clothes he was wearing. Then it started to become increasingly more creepy, and Castiel found himself almost dreading finding something new. He did like all things, but now it had gotten to a point where it wasn’t as fun anymore, where he just felt stalked and like someone was implementing themselves into Castiel’s life without really being in it. What he didn’t know, was that the person in question already was in his life.
Dean Winchester wasn’t known for either subtlety nor seductive skills, but he did have a streak of romance in him so when he found himself completely gone on his best friend, he thought what better way than to be a bit of secret admirer? Castiel would surely with time realise that it was Dean giving him the gifts and the notes, and would be able to confront the issue in his own time, or if not at all if he so wished. Thing was, Castiel didn’t understand that Dean was the gift giver. It was very clear, because he started to complain. Not about the gifts in themselves but by the fact that he couldn’t seem to figure out who they were from and Dean couldn’t just out himself so he tried to help with figuring it out, which only led to Castiel checking out other people and that was just not really all that fun.
So he started giving more obvious things. More things. Things where Castiel couldn’t possibly think anyone but Dean would place them. And Castiel only grew weary. Dean wanted to punch himself in the face for not being brave enough to just tell him. He wanted to punch himself so much that one afternoon he did punch himself in the face and then he walked over the Castiel’s house.
It wasn’t pretty or romantic or even funny when he presented Castiel with a little ceramic angel with a Barbie-doll trench coat. Dean was humming and huffing and agreeing, Castiel was staring and swallowing and asking if Dean had gotten him all the other stuff as well. It was, however, totally worth it to see Castiel’s face break into an elated smile and to throw his arms around Dean’s neck. Yeah. Totally worth it.

The Art of Subtlety
Title: The Art of Subtlety
Request/Prompt: a collection of prompts that i had saved from literally years ago from @imaginethatsupernatural and also @supernaturalimagine - idk if either of them are active anymore but yeah. Basically Dean and the reader are in a secret relationship and it’s following their shenanigans as they (try to) hide it from Sam and Cas
Pairing: Dean x Reader
Warnings: A little violence at the start including mentions of blood, nothing too graphic, and there’s like one sexual innuendo as well
Word Count: 2,161
note; hope you guys enjoy! feel free to send in some requests, i’m hoping to try and post at least once every two days but i can’t do that if my inbox is empty! xx i’d love to hear from you guys!
  Things were not looking good.
The witch was more powerful than you had anticipated, and to make matters worse, you and Dean were facing her alone. Sam had already been knocked out, and was laying in the corner with a bleeding temple.
Your heart was pounding and your head spinning as you called out to get the witch’s attention. She turned towards you, and her split second of weakness offered Dean only a small window of opportunity, yet it was large enough for him to lodge a bullet in her skull. As she collapsed in an ever-growing puddle of blood, you felt an overwhelming wave of relief crash over you, battling with the adrenaline still pumping through your veins. Your hands were shaking as Dean glanced over at you, concern mellowing his otherwise hardened stare.
“Are you okay?” he demanded, rushing over to you and seizing your shoulders, eyes scanning you for injuries. He smelt of metal and sweat, and his hands left bloody streaks on your shirt as his green eyes searched yours insistently. He had a graze on his jaw, and a bruise beginning to form along his cheekbone.
“I’m fine,” you assured him, resting a hand on his shoulder in a light touch of reassurance. You could feel the heat of his skin through his plaid, and though the anxiety in his stance died, he stayed close to you. Dean stared at you in half-awe for a moment, breathing heavily, before his grip on your shoulders tightened.
“You’re okay,” he breathed, more to himself than anything else. “You’re okay.”
You nodded absently, lost in the depths of his eyes as he drank in the sight of you as a parched man drank water. He caught you entirely by surprise as he tugged you closer to him, slamming his lips against yours and kissing you with a fiery intensity that burned through your veins and sent your heart spiraling into a flurry of frantic beating. You were stiff for a moment, but quickly found your arms looping around his neck as his fingers knotted in your hair. His lips were chapped and he tasted of copper as his tongue teased yours, one hand moving to grip your hip as he pulled you flush to his chest. You could feel his heart hammering through his shirt, it’s frenzied rhythm mirroring your own.
The air was pierced with Sam’s cough as he slowly came to, and the two of you were quick to withdraw from your act of passion. You felt your cheeks flush as Dean cleared his throat, eyes flitting to yours one last time before you both moved to tend to Sam.
---
That night, the motel room was silent but for the whirring hum of the air conditioner and the occasional purring of a car cruising past the vicinity. You’d long since scrubbed the blood from under your fingernails and washed the sweat from your hair, and were ready to fall into a well-deserved slumber. Before you could surrender to sleep’s grasp, however, you noticed Dean sitting on the small couch, a beer on the table as he looked blankly at the tv in front of him, lost in his own thoughts.
“Hey,” you said softly, taking a seat next to him, and the eldest Winchester jumped at your sudden appearance. He immediately forced his lips into a small smile.
“Hey,” he said, and his voice was gruff.
“You okay?” you asked. Dean nodded casually, and though you didn’t quite believe him, you let it slide. You all had your demons in this lifestyle, both literally and metaphorically, and Dean had gone through far more than even you could comprehend. It wasn’t up to you to force him to voice his feelings - you could only be there for him in his silence.
“Are you?” he deflected. You nodded, and heard Sam stir in his sleep behind you.
“Wanna go for a walk?” you suggested, and Dean appraised you questioningly for a moment before nodding. The two of you left the motel room, wandering down the barely sheltered corridors that led out to the parking lot.
“So, uh… are we gonna talk about what happened?” you asked eventually, and Dean was so quiet that at first, you feared he hadn’t heard you. As you looked at him searchingly, his adamant avoidance of your gaze insinuated otherwise.
“I could lie and say it was just the… the adrenaline, or the thrill of the hunt, but… dammit, Y/N, I like you. I like you a hell of a lot. And you don’t have to say anything, but-”
You cut him off by gripping his shoulder as you drew to a halt. He looked at you inquiringly, about to speak again, only to be silenced as you stepped forward and kissed him. Though incredulous, he immediately melted into you, his mouth moving with yours sweetly and tenderly, so different to the urgency of your last kiss, yet equally as meaningful.
Both of you were quick to resolve that this should remain only between the two of you - you wanted to preserve this intimacy, to allow this newfound relationship to blossom before it could be tainted with the prying questions of others.
You sealed the vow with a kiss, your whispered promises held secret by the crickets and your whispers bleeding into the night air as, bathed in the moonlight, the two of you found yourselves in each other.
---
Two months later
For the first time in what felt like years, you were wearing a dress (or a classier pant-based outfit if that’s more your style). You felt strangely sophisticated as you left the motel, meeting Sam and Dean where they waited for you at the Impala. Your boyfriend raised an appreciative eyebrow at your attire as he caught sight of you, and you bit back a smile as he winked flirtatiously.
“Look at you,” he said, shaking his head gently. “You look gorgeous, baby.”
You shot him a pointed glare at his careless term of endearment, and his eyes widened in panic as he recalled Sam’s presence. When you glanced at him, however, he seemed nonplussed as he slipped into the Impala.
“You know, Dean, it really is kind of weird for you to call the car ‘baby’,” he remarked, and Dean looked affronted despite the relief clouding his features.
“Hey, watch your mouth! She’ll hear you!” he defended, and you stifled a giggle as the two of you got into the Impala before setting off towards the town’s nearest diner, in need of a celebration following another successful hunt - a run-of-the-mill salt and burn.
Once the three of you had sat and ordered, Sam excused himself to the bathroom, leaving you and Dean alone at the table. Dean immediately seemed to relax.
“Have I mentioned how stupidly good you look in that dress yet?” he asked with a coy grin, and you felt your cheeks flush.
“Uh, yeah, you almost blew our cover!” you hissed playfully, and he smirked.
“Doesn’t have to be the only thing getting blown tonight,” he taunted, and you kicked him beneath the table.
“You wish, Winchester,” you shot back. Dean cockily grinned, about to say something but abruptly shutting his mouth as Sam approached the table. He looked between the two of you with a quizzical furrow of his brow.
“Everything okay?” he asked. You and Dean glanced at each other before nodding quickly, both uttering words of assurance that combined into a cacophony of unintelligible declarations.
“...right,” Sam said slowly, before taking his seat. The night flew by quickly, filled with conversation, food, and laughter, supplemented by the teasing game of footsie you and Dean played under the table and the subtle grins and silent laughter the two of you shared whenever Sam’s attention was diverted elsewhere.
Before long, the three of you were headed back to the Impala, ready to begin the long drive home to the bunker. You settled into the back seat, listening to the brothers’ casual conversations in the front half of the car. Discussions of podcasts, books, whose music taste was better… simple bickering that left you with an amused smile as you occasionally weighed in on their trivial disagreements. Every now and then Dean would glance at you in the rearview mirror, eyes bright as he took in the slope of your smile and enjoyed the melody of your laughter. Your eyes met his in the reflective surface, and the two of you exchanged exhilarated smiles, subtle displays of the mutual secret held between you, a secret that was blooming into the happiness you both had been seeking for what seemed like your entire lives.
Sam set off to bed almost the moment the three of you arrived back at the bunker, leaving you free to join Dean in his room without the need for stealth. The two of you curled up in bed, and Dean hugged you close to his chest, his lips resting in your hair as you slung an arm across his torso.
“Tonight was fun,” you murmured sleepily. “Especially the bit where I owned you at footsie.”
“You owned me? I think we both know I’m the footsie champion here,” Dean protested, and you grinned, placing a soft kiss to his jaw.
“Whatever you say, babe. Whatever helps you sleep at night,” you teased, and he smirked, running his thumb along your cheekbone before tilting your head up so as to capture your mouth with his in a slow, deep kiss. You exchanged a soft smile as you drew apart, and you nestled in closer to him. His grip on you was a little too tight, as though he were scared that someone would snatch you away if he wasn’t too careful. You didn’t mind - you felt safer in his arms than you had ever felt elsewhere.
“You know… we should probably tell Sam about us,” you eventually sighed, and Dean exhaled, nodding slowly.
“Yeah,” he murmured. “But just Sam to start with, yeah? I don’t want just anyone to catch wind, or else-”
“Yeah, yeah, love is weakness, demons would love to use me as bait, blah blah blah. I can take care of myself, you know.”
Dean chuckled. “Oh, I know,” he assured you. “But I’d prefer if you didn’t have to.”
You gave him a small smile, your hand finding his and locking your fingers together.
“So it’s agreed? We’ll tell Sam in the morning?”
  “Yeah, agreed.”
---
The next morning, you and Dean were surprised to see that Cas had joined the three of you in the bunker in a rare occurrence that stemmed from a desire to catch up as opposed to an apocalyptic emergency.
“Cas,” Dean remarked in surprise, glancing to you to gauge your reaction. Your eyes met his, and you half shrugged - may as well tell him, too. No harm in that, right?
“Hey, Cas,” you greeted with a warm smile, which Cas returned with equal kindness.
“Good morning, Y/N. And Dean,” he added with a small inclination of his head. Sam was seated with a cup of coffee, scrolling through a news website on his laptop. He nodded at the two of you quickly.
“Hey, guys,” he acknowledged. “There’s extra toast in the toaster if you’re hungry.”
Dean’s eyes lit up, and he was about to head towards the kitchen before you grabbed his wrist, holding him back.
“Actually, there was something we wanted to speak to you about. Both of you,” you said firmly, and Dean traded a reassuring glance with you. Sam and Cas turned their attention towards the two of you encouragingly.
You swallowed thickly. “Uh, Dean and I are… well… we’re together. We have been for a while, actually,” you announced nervously. Sam and Cas glanced at each other.
“This is… very unexpected,” Cas said suddenly. “I am… very surprised, Sam and I had absolutely no idea,” he said resolutely, and a tad overenthusiastically. He turned to Sam. “Was that convincing?” he asked in a hush, and Sam groaned, though couldn’t restrain his laughter at the confusion etched onto yours and Dean’s faces.
“We know,” Sam said eventually, and Dean’s mouth was agape.
“You-what-how?” he stuttered in surprise. Sam raised an eyebrow.
“Really? You guys aren’t exactly subtle,” he laughed, and you and Dean shared sheepish expressions.
You allowed a small smile. “Why didn’t you say anything?” you asked, your hand clasping Dean’s. He stroked his thumb absentmindedly over your knuckles.
“I figured you’d tell us when you’re ready,” Sam said with a shrug. “Took you long enough. How much do I owe you, Cas?”
“You placed bets on this?” you asked, aghast, and Sam shrugged again somewhat guiltily. You allowed a huff of irritation, but felt your heart glow as Dean pressed a kiss to your temple and smiled into your hair, indifferent to the presence of his brother and the angel. No more secrets.
You could get used to this.

"So how can we tell that New Zealand’s 2016 vintage was the strongest ever? The most reliable measure of team quality comes from Rugby Vision, a predictive model assembled by Niven Winchester, an economist at MIT who also researches rugby probabilities. The system forecasts the results and margins of victory for all major international and most domestic matches. Had you used the model to place $100 spread bets on the scores of each of the 48 games at last year’s World Cup, you would have earned a tidy profit of $548 (or 11.4%). Mr Winchester’s predictions are based on team ratings, which are constructed by exchanging points between opponents after a match. Conquering a strong rival means that you gain a large number of their ratings points: Ireland took 1.68 of them from New Zealand in Chicago. Beating a weak team, however, will earn you little. The All Blacks collected no ratings boost at all for their 68-10 thrashing of lowly Italy on November 12th, and actually lost 0.16 points when they edged past Wales by 36-22 on June 18th, a smaller margin of victory than the model expected. [..] In 1905 the “Original” All Blacks toured Europe and America, the first time that they had travelled overseas, and won all but one of their 35 matches. The team’s success was a source of immense pride in a land that was still a British colony, and which did not gain complete self-governance until 1907. The sport has been something of a national obsession ever since. A lengthy piece in The Guardian before last year’s World Cup gives a flavour of how closely the game is woven into the fabric of Kiwi life: it is the pastime of every schoolchild, the yardstick by which rural villages measure themselves, the tide of the national mood. [..] The All Blacks therefore get the pick of the islands’ athletes, though New Zealand does have strong rugby-league and cricket sides as well. By contrast, football is the chief sport in most European countries, and Australian-rules football and cricket dominate across the Tasman Sea. In spite of this selective advantage, there are just 150,000 registered players in New Zealand, far fewer than the 230,000 in Australia, 290,000 in France and 340,000 in both South Africa and England. That smaller pool of talent is highly skilled. From the age of five, as “Small Blacks”, players are taught to focus on handling and spatial awareness. At schoolboy level, they are graded by size rather than age, to reward finesse, not physicality. In the professional tiers, brawn becomes more important: New Zealand is blessed with a large population of Pacific Islanders, whose physiques tend to combine pace and power in a way that makes them unstoppable with a ball in hand. But the mark of an All Black, vast or nimble, is the ability to take a pass from a teammate while darting through the tiniest of gaps. This emphasis on movement and distribution would be unfamiliar in other countries. British rugby players grow up boshing into one another with all the subtlety of a herd of oxen. South Africans are equally known for their “direct” style of play. Perhaps only the Australians devote as much attention to creating space and slipping runners between defenders. [..] we downloaded publicly available match reports on every game between tier-one international sides since 2010, and built a statistical model that measures which elements of a rugby match truly predict a team’s scoring.
Our findings from these 348 fixtures run contrary to many common assumptions in rugby. Having more than half of the possession or “territory”—the amount of time spent in an opponents’ half—is often cited as proof that a team is in control. Yet these numbers bear little relationship to the outcome of games. In our six-year sample, the team with more possession was victorious precisely half the time, and the side with more territory just 47%. [..] just a handful of the twenty or so variables that appear in standard reports proved to be statistically significant predictors of how many points a team will score. “Clean breaks”—the number of times an attacker bursts through the defensive line—turned out to be the most important factor. Even when controlling for other offensive variables, such as the tally of passes completed and the count of tackles evaded, sneaking behind the opponents’ defence was correlated with greater attacking success. Specifically, improving your total of clean breaks by one standard deviation was associated with scoring 4.7 extra points [..] in a normally distributed set of data, 68% of observations will fall within one standard deviation of the mean, and 95% within two. On average, a tier-one international team makes 5.6 clean breaks per game. Improving by one standard deviation would get them to 10 breaks, which would typically see their score rise by 4.7 points. [..] What mattered was penetrative running, as measured by clean breaks and metres run with the ball. In both of these aspects, the Kiwis are untouchable. Other sides usually “carry” for between 300 and 400 metres in a game. The All Blacks do so for 500 (see chart). On average, the New Zealanders make an impressive nine clean breaks per match. [..] The data also revealed the importance of the “dark arts”. After the ball is fumbled or ushered off the side of the pitch, the game is restarted among the hulking forwards. If your opponent has committed a handling error, you have the opportunity to put the ball into a scrum, with the hope that it will emerge on your side of the melee. If he has carried or propelled the ball over the sideline, you are awarded a “lineout”; that is, the chance to throw the ball into a jumping throng of players. The data confirm that losing possession in either of these scenarios is correlated with a decline in point-scoring."

PP3 Presentation
My presentation aims to give an idea of where I came from, where I am now and my future plans. In the booklets I’ve put a selection of new and old work of mine as well as some examples of artists who inspired me.
WHERE I WAS:
Having been brought up in the Chiltern Hills, I have always been surrounded by and had an affinity for nature - my mum loves walking, so holidays generally consisted of enjoying mountainous landscapes, the likes of which my work now focusses on.
I have only begun to really appreciate these expanses of beauty as I get older, perhaps due to my move to Bristol which was my first experience of living in a city.
I did a foundation year in Art and Design while living at home which I massively enjoyed so wanted to take art further; deciding to do a degree in something creative. It was between here and Winchester School of art to do Graphics. In the end I chose Bristol, as I thought moving somewhere more different to home would be a beneficial challenge but mostly, Drawing and Print’s emphasis on the tangible; not ignoring tactile processes of paint in favour of the computerised.
In all honesty, I do struggle with the business of it, but to an extent I try to figure this out in my work - exploring in contrast the peacefulness that being alone in nature gives me. I am however glad I pushed myself as I think my artwork too has been given the space to breathe and therefore has become less predictable.
Historically I was very inspired by the more traditional artists, favouring more realistic or impressionistic works of art. Off the top of my head Caravaggio, Titan and Rembrandt on the more classical end as well as Cezanne and Georgia O’Keeffe were some of my favourite artists. Now I’m understanding the importance of achieving a balance. I still can learn much from the old masters yet need to keep myself open to new ideas. Tiepolo is a newer example of an old master who has been a massive influence on me and is now someone I look towards in order to grasp a good understanding of colour and layering of colour within my work.
WHERE I AM NOW:
This year on the course I have realised how much mentality affects my artwork and the importance of letting go and trying to not let preciousness or fear change the way I want to create. Instead I want to be able to see the world creatively and enjoy the experience along the way. I am becoming less conscious of worries and art again is becoming something I use to deal with emotions.
I have this year discovered some ways to minimize being overly conscious of people when creating. Music has always been important to me, and I have grown up in a household where music and other creative outlets were valued. Being in this zone of creativity, so bringing headphones into the studio, is a must for me. Often even if I am struggling to create, once I get into this mindset my ideas flow. The use of a sketchbook in tandem with my loose work also helps to solve this issue as the smaller scale generally will allow me to sort out my ideas in a way which translates to my own way of working. However, the biggest thing that’s made the most positive change to my working process is initial looseness when sketching out an idea, even when working in paint. I achieve this through a combination of loose, thin paint and a generally a coloured ground. Looking at the works of Chaim Soutine, Sorolla as well as Diebenkorn – it is easy to see their figurative and gestural marks. Most of these core artists which influence my practice are really loose, something which I’m massively enjoying experimenting in as it’s so far from my more traditional sketching manner.
Furthermore, through this method of adding a ground, I think I’ve developed a key understanding of the importance of ‘setting’ and the degree to which the background massively affects its surroundings. Colour theory plays a huge part of this and has been the main core of my fixation. Despite this, my historical exploration of colour was in my opinion much shallower as I was only considering the colours and their relationships within the object I was painting yet usually this was just pasted onto a ground which I mostly took no notice of. Now, I am trying to see the entire piece as a whole and adding a ground colour has so far allowed me to do this with much success. Although I often will change this colour, it forces me to continually consider the colour relationships I am forming.
This year I am mostly focusing on painting natural forms but with a more abstract and loose style. This enables me to take some of my attention away from exactness of what I’m drawing; instead focusing on my mark-making and colour choices. Learning about Rhoda Kellogg’s research into the classification of entopics, was a key factor in my decisiveness to consider my mark-making more.
I have also enjoyed visiting galleries more this year than any other year and I’ve found that seeking out exhibitions of existing artists that I love to be the most inspiration for me. My favourite gallery visits of this year were the Munch exhibition and the Sorolla exhibition. Munch uses tone really dynamically to even create ‘colourful’ black and white pieces. Sorolla is almost the other end of the spectrum; his work taught me the subtleties you can achieve within colour and I’m fixated by his methods of painting light and shadows.
As well as listening to visiting speakers and official conversations in the studio, the presence of the studio this and last year has been something that I shall miss after the course is over. Fin, for example has sworn me off mixing Titanium white, something which without I am finding gives the overall piece much more lightness. I am also finding, not competitive feeling but a fever to achieve more and am experiencing how having other artists surrounding you can cause you to push the boat out more.
Future Plans:
This 4 year delve into what a career within arts would be like has only solidified some of the ideas I went in to the course with. I love painting and happily would paint for myself forever yet the pressure of deadlines, as ever, gets to me and really affects my working process negatively. Due to this I am looking into career paths which would give me a stable source of income but enough time to continue painting at my own pace and enable me to feel free to create work which I’m proud of. It probably took me all of first year to find my own feet on the course so working on commission has practically been written off the possibilities entirely. I know that I always want art to be a core pillar of my life so teaching at the moment is what appeals most to me. I have looked into programs where I could live and teach abroad for a year – such as the JET program (Japan Exchange and Teaching) and the TEFL program (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) as I thought they would be really interesting culturally. Currently, I intend to apply at local schools to do some volunteer work, ideally sitting in as a teaching assistant with perhaps some opportunities to lead the class.  This aims to solidify that this is a career path I could see myself in before I took the next step which would be achieving a teaching qualification.

'Supernatural' British Invasion is a true action invasion episode
Here’s one thing you cannot say about last week’s Supernatural episode: “Eh, not much happened…”  A lot happened, that’s for sure. Some of it was a shock, some of it wasn’t; some of it I liked; some of it I most definitely did not. It’s a beautiful spring day on the East coast, so let’s start with the good stuff. 1. The return of hunter Eileen Leahy (and actress Shoshannah Stern). I loved the character in her debut episode, as did just about everyone in the fandom, and miracle of miracles, Eileen actually survived the episode, so I was hopeful she’d be back. Eileen is seamlessly integrated back into the narrative, giving the boys some intel that intersects with their current search for Kelly Kline. I loved watching Sam and Dean’s frank appreciation of Eileen and her hunting skills – the genuine pride on their faces as they both said ‘Nice work, Eileen.' I also loved the care they both took to be sure she could see them when they were talking with her via iPad or in person – it’s those little touches that only happen on a show when someone cares. I interviewed Shoshannah after her first episode, and she talked about her choice to have the character read lips as well as she does. Shoshannah: When I started thinking about her, and she’d been hunting on her own since she was sixteen, I started thinking about this deaf FBI agent who actually existed and had a show based on her. She had taught herself how to read lips extraordinarily well. I personally can’t read lips as well as Eileen can, but it made sense to me that since she was so well-trained as a hunter, she’d develop that kind of skill, one that had elements of fantasy but was still grounded in reality. I love that Shoshannah put so much thought into creating the character and that they kept the consistency of that from episode to episode. I also loved the consistency of referencing, in a way, Sam’s mistake in signing during the first episode. This time, he gets it right – and what he’s signing is ‘it was a mistake.' Nicely done, show. I also just plain love that Eileen is such a badass, like when she encountered the demon cleaning up after Dagon. Demon: (sneering) Hunter. Eileen: (right before she kills him) Demon. Sam and Dean: Nice.   Eileen got to be badass again when she grabs the Colt and tries to kill Dagon, missing only because it’s not so easy to shoot a Prince of Hell who can see it coming and get out of the way (or because she was in the process of poofing out of there anyway). Shoshannah is also excellent at the emotional scenes – her horror at accidentally killing someone who was “not a monster” (arguably, since Rennie was one of the BMoL and I’m beginning to define them as monsters instead of human) and her admission to Sam and Dean that she’s not okay. At least Eileen got wrapped up in a heartfelt Sam hug, which is quite comforting, as anyone who has ever been hugged by Jared Padalecki surely knows.  I’m not shipping Sam and Eileen though – I agree with what Padalecki said about it not making any sense for the Winchesters to have romantic relationships on the show. Dean appears to agree. Either that or he’s just being the big brother he is. Eileen (smiling at Sam from the iPad): Bye Sam. Sam: (smiling adorably back) Bye. Dean: Oh, that’s cute…   Eileen is actually a lot like Dean, which is a compliment in my book and in Sam’s. Eileen (when red shirt Rennie is monologuing) No one cares. Later Dean says the same thing. So I do think there’s some chemistry between Sam and Eileen, but I also don’t think it makes sense for them to pursue it. But I hope we see Eileen again -- she survived the episode, though she has a death sentence on her head courtesy of the BMoL. Fingers crossed! Shoshannah’s live tweets just added to the fun. @Shoshannah7: That scene in the bunker ranks among my top favorites. It was so much fun. I taught the boys so many dirty signs #SPNSignLanguage Of course she did! And about that hug… @Shoshannah7: I have a lot of hair. We had to make sure it was out of my face so @JensenAckles stepped in to show @jarpad how to hug me. Was fine with it. I’m sure you were, Shoshannah. Not only a Sam hug but a Dean hug too! [caption id="attachment_44633" align="aligncenter" width="598"] Photo: Twitter[/caption] 2. Mick’s redemption arc. I haven’t been a huge Mick Davies fan, but the character has been the most interesting BMoL from the start, and this episode took his character development exponentially farther. Of course, as I listened to how Mick was saved from the streets by the BMoL Artful Dodger style and thus is so blindly loyal to them that he murdered his best friend as a kid to prove it, I started thinking uh oh. Every time Mick had a nightmare about the murder of his friend, wracked with guilt, I worried more about his longevity. Sure enough, things come to a head for Mick in this episode, and not in a good way. Throughout the episode, Mick’s confrontations with the Winchesters show his growing ambivalence to “follow the Code,” with Sam and Dean challenging him repeatedly as to why and encouraging him to think for himself. When faced with yet another directive to kill a human (this time Eileen for her accidental shooting of BMoL red shirt Rennie), Mick is clearly torn. Dean: Screw the code. You don’t have to do this. Sam: You’re better than that. You only have to answer to your own code. Sam finally gets through to Mick, telling him that he can make his own choices. That has been a theme of Supernatural from the start, and it was explored nicely here, if somewhat predictably. The final confrontation comes near the end of the episode, as the villainous Dr. Hess lays down the law. Lady Bevell (I can’t hear her name without wanting to gag, btw) is right. Hunters are dogs, no good if they don’t obey. Eileen must be killed, and the Winchesters must stand trial and if they’re guilty, be executed. Assimilate or eliminate. Mick knows what that means; he has probably seen through the BMoL’s hypocrisy for a long time without wanting to. He defends Sam and Dean and the way they make decisions based on their sense of what’s right. Mick: I’m a man now. And I choose to do the right thing. And that is the signal for Dr. Hess to nod to Mr. Ketch, who executes his colleague just like that. There was never any indication that Mick and Ketch were at all friendly, but the cold-bloodedness of the kill was still chilling. Fandom (early part of the episode): Okay, this character can stay… BOOM Fandom: Oh, right, this is Supernatural…. 3. And there went the only BMoL who I could stomach at all. I’m going to need a whole bottle of Tums for the next episode, I fear. The Lucifer and Crowley show. We find out that Lucifer’s show of submission for Crowley is just that – a show. While Crowley does indeed have a hold on him, Lucifer pretending to willingly submit is just a calculated ploy to get Crowley’s guard down. I loved the subtleties Mark Pellegrino brought to that, Lucifer’s dismal kicked-puppy look as he licks the floor oh so convincing. I chatted with Pellegrino on the weekend about the episode and complimented him on those subtleties. Mark particularly enjoyed how Lucifer messed with the hapless demon who was giving him the physical exam – the way Lucifer stands uncomfortably close, holds the other demon with his arm around his neck, an unsettling mix of flirtatious and threatening, sealed with a kiss that was anything but affectionate. It made ME queasy, so I can’t imagine what it did to that poor demon. I liked all that – and Lucifer’s sassy winking and double talk as he pretended to give his submission speech to Crowley’s assembled demons (while negating it with his expression and glowing red eyes). What I didn’t like was reducing Crowley to such a fool once again. I thought we’d established that Crowley is far from a fool – so did he really turn Lucifer around to face his demon minions so that he couldn’t see his face??? Did he really fall for the submission routine so easily?? Or are we just seeing double double double crosses between these two? I hope so, because they are both formidable enemies and that’s what makes it so interesting between them. (Something else that Pellegrino allowed that Lucifer enjoyed). If it does turn out that Crowley really is that stupid, I’ll be annoyed. I don’t like when the writers seem to write a scene as a way to get from A to B, but not taking into account that the path doesn’t really make a whole lot of sense. 4. Cas mentions! At least Dean was attempting to call Castiel on the phone in this episode, and Sam and Dean appear to be a bit worried about him. It’s always a fine line between constant mentions when Misha isn’t in an episode and not mentioning Cas at all for multiple episodes. I think a lot of fans felt better that the Winchesters are still worrying about him after their emotional reaction to his almost-death. 5. And that brings me to Sam and Dean. Here’s where there were some things I liked and some I most definitely didn’t. I liked Sam and Dean being a united front repeatedly – during this episode and during this season. We get a little glimpse of Winchester domesticity (one of my favorite things in the world) as they come home with their bags of groceries. When they find Mick there they confront him about breaking into “our home,” and I get a little happy shiver, because it IS. They sit on the table side by side, shoulders touching, a literal united front. That happens several times throughout the episode, interspersed with small slices of Winchester brotherly ribbing and drinking and hangover recovering. That’s all good. What’s not so good? 1. Not enough Sam and Dean. There were long stretches that didn’t include the brothers at all, and that always makes me unhappy. I get it, they’re super busy, young families. But Supernatural is not Supernatural without Sam and Dean, and I feel their absence acutely every time they’re offscreen somewhere for a period of time. I’ll get back to the last scene because I loved that last image so much. But let’s talk about the other things I didn’t like. 2. Hogwarts…I mean, Kendricks. Which had so much of a deliberate Hogwarts vibe that it made me start to giggle, even when it wasn’t supposed to be funny. This is a great shot, but it was distracting how on the nose it all was. 3. Mary and Mr. Ketch. Even before they took a roll in the sheets together, every time Mary smiled at him somewhat flirtatiously, I felt queasy. As I’ve said before, I realize that Mary doesn’t know all the things he’s done, but we do. And that feels very bad. I didn’t particularly like that the episode tries to create a bit of sympathy for Ketch by making it clear that he has some feelings for Mary that she doesn’t return. She’s just using him; he seems to want more, though of course, he denies it. That wasn’t enough for me to manufacture any sympathy for the character though – in fact, I’m surprised how many people seemed to start happily down that road. With the things he’s done and the way he’s done them? No way. I can’t go there. (Though I do give David Haydn-Jones a ton of credit for managing to portray that hint of vulnerability) It’s the same fear I’ve had about Mary all season long – I’m still assuming her redemption arc is coming, and I’m still not sure I can go there either. They took her so far in the opposite direction – and sleeping with Mr. Ketch just solidified it even further – that I’m not sure there’s any coming back from that. Ketch is aligned with Lady Bevell, who mercilessly tortured Mary’s SON. Her sleeping with him makes my stomach turn. I was also put off by Mary’s contention that she used to be the type of person “built for” relationships, meaning her marriage to John. Mary: But that was a long time ago. Was it? Her whole problem with accepting Sam and Dean as her sons, in the beginning, seemed to be that she was freshly separated from loving husband John and baby sons Sammy and Dean, and so she didn’t have room in her heart for the adult versions. Now, just a short time later, that was “a long time ago”?   I’m fine with Mary getting some, people connect physically to get past emotional loss all the time, and Mary is as entitled as anyone. But why oh why did it have to be Ketch? I’m torn because there are some points Show is trying to make that I want to go with – Mary’s insistence that she can “have it all” and not have to choose between hunting and her family sounds like it should be a good thing, and I want to buy in. It’s a pretty clear analogy to real life challenges facing women, and a challenge I can relate to personally. But they’ve written Mary in such a way that I find it hard to go along with her even when I like what she’s saying! I assume they’re setting up a confrontation for Mr. Ketch, who’s been tasked with killing ALL the Winchesters. But they certainly didn’t do the character of Mary any favors by the way they got him there. So where does that leave us? There’s a lot of excitement for the last few episodes of this season among the cast, which gives me hope that some of the strange directions Show has headed this season will be explained, and I’ll just go OHHHHHH, that’s why. At least I hope that’s what will happen! In the meantime, I’m still giggling over the promo for next week (which yay we’re getting promos again!) Dean: Hello, goat dude? That is just so Dean Winchester, and it made me happy. I’ll end with the last scene, which also made me very happy. Sam and Dean are having another domestic Winchesters moment in the bunker. Sam hands over a wrapped object to his brother, and Dean slowly, carefully, reverently unwraps it. The Colt. Dean takes it out, holds it up, sights down the barrel. Flashbacks from the early seasons, Dean shooting Azazel with this same gun, make the emotion well up in me. Dean: Welcome back, sweetheart. [caption id="attachment_44652" align="aligncenter" width="620"] Caps: @kayb625[/caption] Me and most of the fandom: Melts. Only five more episodes of the season – what will this week bring? Here's the trailer for this week's Supernatural episode The Memory Remains, plus a fun Top 10 video of the best SPN episodes (not including this season!).
