i'm literally insane about the last agni kai and the lightning scene(s). i swear i've rewatched it 10+ times since my last rewatch of the show (which was my first watch in years) and like. azula sees katara come into view from behind. zuko doesn't. he follows azula's gaze and sees katara and is immediately horrified. he doesn't even think or hesitate because he doesn't have time and for once he doesn't have to look back at azula to figure out what she's doing because he knows what she's doing and he won't let it happen. time dwindling into slow motion as a haunting score plays? and zuko literally yelling out "no!" because that lightning absolutely cannot hit katara. as soon as he sees it there's no chance of that ever happening. and then katara watching in horror as the lightning flashes against features in what is probably one of the most hauntingly beautiful animated moments of the show? zuko hitting the ground still convulsing with lightning and katara crying out "zuko!" and immediately trying to run to him before azula attacks again? and the next scene we cut back to with them, zuko is groaning weakly and trying to lift himself up, and we see katara literally gasp in surprise as she realizes he's still alive (i'm sobbing because i do quite literally think she thought he was dead) and immediately tries to run to him again, nevermind that she knows azula is still there, and the hand katara uses for healing is already doused in water as she reaches for him. but then azula starts attacking again. and zuko, despite literally being in so much pain that he can't stand and can barely even move at all without whimpering, still tries to reach for the spot where he can see azula attacking katara. katara is forced to hide from azula's attacks. and as azula is mocking "zuzu, you don't look so good" down to zuko, the perspective shot is such that you can SEE that katara is also looking at where he lies prone in the distance, surrounded by flame (probably wondering how much time they have before it really is too late) before looking back up at azula and realizing she needs to defeat her as quickly and handily as possible so katara can get to zuko. obviously katara would have done this anyway (the whole reason they were THERE was to halt the continued cycle of the imperialist regime of the fire nation), but the scene is specifically framed as katara trying to figure out how to stop azula so the obstacle to her getting to zuko is no longer in the way. katara's defeat of azula was epic and deserves its own post. but then after making sure azula is securely chained, she runs to zuko, looks at him with such immense sadness and horror and fear as she hears him in so much pain, tenderly turns him over so she can get a good look at the wound. and she cups his head? briefly but so gently? so that he won't hit it as she turns him over? and when she tries to heal him you can tell she is so genuinely unsure if it will even work, and so relieved that she starts crying tears of joy when she sees it has (at least enough to keep him alive and somewhat lessen his pain.) they thank each other (and you can tell it's still really hard for zuko to talk and his eyes are barely open but he thanks her anyways i'm.) and she thanks him back and!!! when he starts to try to sit up she makes a little surprised face and then immediately helps him to do so (and puts a tender hand to his chest while she does!!!) and obviously that last shot of them standing together is also one of emotional support, but katara's hand on his back is also partly because i still think (and certainly katara still thinks) trying to walk/stand on his own would be a bad idea, so it's definitely not happening.

I've been thinking about how Ed starts directly killing people in s2e8. I've seen a lot of worry that this is tragic, that it's Ed falling back into a life he hates with more vigor, and I don't think it's meant to be understood that way at all.
I think it's a triumph.
One thing we absolutely have to understand: there has never been a time on the show when Ed wasn't killing people. That's true for all characters; this is a show about pirates. Even in s1, Ed was leading successful raids and ordering racists skinned. In a realistic sense, nothing has changed.
The difference is in how Ed does not need to construct intricate ways to distance himself from it anymore.
We know that Ed's first time killing was his abusive dad, an event that deeply traumatized him, and it left him thinking himself an absolute monster. His own capacity for violence disgusts and terrifies him, and even though he's been very successful in a very violent career, he needed to distance himself from killing people ("the fire killed those guys, not me") to avoid confronting this part of himself. He believes that the part of himself that is so capable of violence is irredeemable, a monster, unworthy of love.
Even at the start of the season, when Ed is in a self-destructive spiral, it's debateable if he's directly killing anyone. If Lucius had died, he'd probably have said the sea did it, not him. The guy we see him shoot during the raid sequence already had a knife through his chest - it's a step up, and surely meant to be understood as self-harm more than anything else, but that's still a mercy kill, if anything.
Compare to the finale of season 2. These are direct kills, there is no way to argue that Ed is not responsible. It is not debateable that Ed killed all those British officers.
A lot of the worry I've seen around this concern how Ed is going back to what he's good at (as Pop-Pop told him to), and there's an asusmption that that is killing people/violence. But that's not true, is it? Ed's never been good at killing people, his hangups around directly killing are a known character trait. So...what is Ed good at?
Think about how the scene plays out. Ed sees the Republic burning; he can only assume Stede is either captured, wounded, or dead. He's horrified and dazed, his ears ring - he kills the two British soldiers who happen upon him, he decided to fish up his Blackbeard outfit.
What is Ed actually good at? He's a good pirate, a good captain. He's good at keeping his crew safe, he's good at keeping Stede safe. He has to think he's either going to be embarking on a mission to get revenge or to save his boyfriend.
At first, I was very hesitant about the idea of Ed having to go back to piracy, which he says he hates. But what he was actually trying to do was drown Blackbeard, the part of himself he sees as so unworthy of love. He needed to see that Blackbeard is part of him, that he's not a monster or unloveable, that Blackbeard can help him save his friends and his boyfriend.
It's not a coincidencethat the show goes out of its way to make Ed's killing people in this episode as morally easy to accept as possible. The British officers we see are all racist and mean and unpleasant - like, damn, singing 'we shall never be slaves' while making Black characters serve them? Gross! They got what was coming to them! This is the 'racists deserve to die' show, after all.
And Ed uses this violence as a tool for love, to get him back to his boyfriend, to give them a triumphic reunion. I don't think it's a coincidence that this is when Ed tells Stede he loves him, either - he's come one step closer to accepting he's worthy of love, he's more ready to acknowledge what they have.
Ed doesn't have to feel bad about killing those officers. The show doesn't ask him to. He gets to retire while still wearing his Blackbeard outfit - Blackbeard gets to retire, not be drowned with a canonball in the ocean. And we're left with Ed, still with a lot of growing to do and a lot of self-discovery left, but he's closer to realizing that he's not a monster and that he's so deserving of love.

i've seen actually a few different people/users leave comments or tags about wanting to check out scavenger's reign after seeing my glowing praise of it, but also being very nervous to do so, because they're excited for a lesbian who looks like them (azi), but despite my gushing, i keep mentioning how the show is full of body horror, brutal deaths and characters having a bad time;
this is a very valid concern to have, given how a character like azi might be treated in another show, i was going in with tempered caution as well
Tumblr media
without spoiling too much, you can lay those worries down. the show treats her very well.
if you'd like some more elaboration, i've put it under this readmore!
azi is put into stomach-churningly dire "an alien is about to eat you/do a big big body horror/assimilate you" situations the least of any of the characters, and not even because she's being given a lack of stuff to do/experience in the plot!
i think we only see her get "afflicted" by something the way sam does once, and its very mild compared to everyone else (basically she gets a really bad itchy rash after successfully prying some weird would-be paralytic puffballs that get stuck to her) and even this one instance is quickly resolved by other fauna, in a very nice sequence of scenes that is clearly a healing/relaxing experience for her.
while she is put into danger and is trying to survive like everyone else, she gets tossed about in action setpieces she makes it through with minimal injury, more than enduring The Horrors;
she gets to have better luck because more of her narrative screentime is, by design, already dedicated to emotionally bonding with her robot buddy, levi, as they suddenly and rapidly attain self-awareness, and levi encourages her to find the beauty and harmony in this nightmarish nature documentary they got marooned in.
this helps her lighten up just in time, too, because she is, very understandably, stressed almost to her breaking point by the point the show starts, having one of the better crash landing sites of any of the survivors, and i bet the other survivors all wish they had a robot tagging along to help, but being stranded and lonely and trying to not lose hope of rescue. she misses her girlfriend, and is feeling increasingly vulnerable (negative) and afraid, especially when situations occur where she gets reminded she does need help. azi starts the series being kind of mean to levi, and having to balance her confusion, worry, and then awe of levi's transformation, and let herself accept she does need that help.
azi is not the gruff grr nothing phases me nothing hurts me the writers dont have to try giving me depth i'm just the badass butch who exists to fill the death quota later so a lighter/more fem character can survive;
her vulnerability reveals itself without much fuss, and is eventually tended to both by herself and others. we get flashbacks that show she was naturally introverted, but clearly wanting to overcome that in order to socialize and get closer to someone (girls...)
she goes through it for other reasons, but i promise you, the show treats her very well, i feel. she and levi are probably-nah, definitely, my favorite characters in it, and the show would not have blown me away the way it did without them here
SR has 3 main story threads; Azi and Levi, Sam and Ursula, Kamen and The Hollow. of the three, Azi and Levi's is the heart, and is the most romantic, in multiple senses of the term. i might right a breakdown of what i love most about all three threads? but yeah
now, if you still need the "okay but does she or her gf die" y/n:
.
.
.
.
azi and her girlfriend both survive the events of the show, and reunite in one piece! they may or may not throuple up with the robot.
i sure hope they do.
you can't tease us with scenes like this and Not
Tumblr media
OH: also, when a new antagonist shows up later in the form of a lethally pragmatic blonde woman named Kris who tries to boss azi around, i did get nervous, but Azi soured to max on her and spoke exactly what i hoped was the intent at the exact moment i felt it was critical to avoid me going "hrrmmm don't like these Implications" (the Instant azi detects blondie is trying to haze her into being a new teammate to be bossed around, azi immediately gets rightfully pissed and rejects it, and schemes to get the tagalong kid to see this also and on azi's side in the long run, which plays out and kris gets rapidly shuttled out of the plot and then pretty damn well humbled in the only blatant Sequel Hook present. i Appreciated that. Would have loved to love you Kris I love evil women but then you pulled That Stunt and now you can go wither alone in the corner

No magic, but does Beck have any self defense instincts? I know he probably wouldn't consciously react on them, but.... Would he ever do something like bite Helle if they spooked him suddenly?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
of course! beck is a vampire after all! a predator! big scary!
masterlist bingo card
tw vampire whumper, vampire whumpee, conditioned whumpee, fear of punishment, manipulation, mind games
Life in the mansion was quite cosy and peaceful, for the most part. Aside from the general levels of anxiety and the sometimes debilitating loneliness and isolation, Beck had nothing to complain about. He could almost completely forget about being a runt, with the steady supply of blood Helle was allowing him.
Never completely, though, of course. Because Helle reminded him. And they reminded him often.
Because of how sheltered he was, Beck really had little idea of how his vampire instincts worked. He never really got a proper feel for how strong he actually was, because Helle was stronger, and they were all he could compare himself to — safe to say, he wasn't prepared to see the coffee table snap in half after he'd banged on it out of frustration. He spent the entire evening apologising to Helle for ruining the furniture.
He didn't really use his speed either, unless he was running away from a human who accidentally spooked him. After having woken up to a group of hunters breaking into the mansion, he was extra jumpy, and he didn't hesitate to flee from any situation that made him feel even mildly threatened. Being able to catch his phone ten times out of ten was a nice bonus, he supposed.
'Fighting' and 'self-defence' never even crossed his mind. Once again, the only person he regularly interacted with was Helle, a vampire far stronger than he was. There was no reason to fight them, and no chance of defending himself. He was magicless, too, and from what he'd gathered, that meant he was absolutely useless in a violent setting; so that was exactly how he lived his life.
Until one night, Helle decided to sneak up on him.
He hardly remembered the exact sequence of events. He'd heard a noise, someone touched him– it didn't matter. All that mattered was that he'd sank his fangs right into Helle's hand, and he was still holding that hand in his mouth, and his jaw was completely locked up from the shock and anxiety.
Helle blinked at him a couple times. "So..." They gently tugged on their hand. "Any chance of me getting my hand back?"
Beck let out a soft whine, and finally released his hold. "I'm so sorry," he said immediately after. "I– I got scared– I'm sorry, I don't know why that was my first thought– and then I just, I just couldn't open my mouth, I got too anxious, it's a thing that happens when I'm anxious–"
As Helle slowly lifted their hand he quieted down, mortified to see the two puncture wounds he'd caused. Stupid. Stupid, stupid, stupid. Helle was going to muzzle him, they were going to pull his fangs out with pliers, they were going to wire his mouth shut.
"Do you think this is appropriate behaviour?" they asked, and Beck tried to make himself a little smaller.
"N-no, Master. I'm sorry, I didn't mean to–"
"Did I ask for excuses?"
He was trembling now, shaking his head frantically. "No, Master."
I'm sorry I'm sorry I'm sorry please at least let me say I'm sorry–
"Dogs who bite get put down," they said softly, cocking their head to the side. "Are you going to bite again?"
"No!" he cried desperately, tears welling up in his eyes. "No, Master, please, I'm sorry–"
Helle burst out laughing, making him stop his pathetic grovelling for a second. Was that... good? Was he entertaining enough not to be put down?
They licked the blood off their hand, still smiling. "Fret not, dear, you are always such a good boy for me. I am merely teasing." They stepped away and Beck let out a relieved sigh, only for Helle to swiftly remind him that being on edge was a constant in their home. "But do keep in mind that I bite back, yes?"

Why Astarion Will Not Betray Tav
Spoilers for all of Baldur’s Gate 3, EA, patch 8:
Note: This post was written in Oct ‘22, patch 8 Early Access of Baldur’s Gate 3.
This post started as a 'Astarion isn't as bad as you might think' post but turned into an analysis of him xD
I have found a lot of people thinking Astarion would be the evil one of the party down the road but I really disagree. I made this character analysis to see how likely he is to do so and/or break your heart. If anyone, it is probably Gale or Wyll who will betray us, in my opinion, or at least not a high approval Astarion. I tried being as objective as I could while also not trying to be outright dismissive/having opposition bias. Hope this helps people understand him a bit more, and do respectfully correct me if I have made an error.
So here is why I think Astarion will not end up breaking your heart, but it is plausible that he may leave you through your own choices in the story, especially related to his part in it:
Emotional Character Sketch
Astarion's honesty and vulnerability-
“Oh please, you think I’m the only one with secrets? At least you know there’s something I’m not telling you.”
Out of all the companions so far, Astarion is the one who has been the most open and vulnerable with us. He told us he's not only a vampire but a vampire’s slave, he told us his master's name, where Cazador lives, he was vulnerable with the hunter and he trusts you with the situation (who you can actually set lose on him. So, you can put his life in danger with the knowledge he has given you. No one who has a grand scheme of betraying you does that), he showed you his markings which is something deeply traumatic for him, and he let you in about one of his insecurities- his appearance. Imagine being vain and insecure and then being unable to do anything about it because you can't look at yourself. He shared that with you. Compared to this, the other companions share precious little, nothing big enough to put their life in your hands. You can't betray any of the companions so early on in the story, but you can betray Astarion. If anything, he comes off as a red herring to me.
Astarion is honest about his transgressions and openly enjoys evil acts like murder and malicious trickery, even if it leads to people being seriously hurt. Unlike Gale and Wyll who constantly try to come off as good guys, almost like they're trying to convince everyone around them (and themselves) that they're noble-hearted. Astarion is openly greedy as well. My point is, he is more honest about his shortcomings than anyone else, the only one like this is Lae’zel. So, even in the event that he does decide to leave you, it will not be a betrayal, you'd know it's coming because he would not hide it. Think about it, the guy straight up attacked the gur hunter mid-conversation when we could've sneak attacked him like, you know, a rogue. He is too on edge all the time to play the sneaky, slow game. He never feels safe enough to sit and scheme about.
Feelings for Tav-
"I want to know what the world sees when it looks at me. (in a small voice, looking sheepish) What you see."
He really wants to know if you find him attractive in the mirror cutscene. Almost seems hesitant at first, brushing you away but then pleading you to stay and push himself to ask for your help and opinion. That entire sequence seems like a long winded way of him sneakily asking you if you find him attractive or not. He really cares what you think and if you're attracted to him.
Part of me thinks he genuinely does like Tav and has liked them ever since they met. He says it (at least to my knowledge) three times in three different instances that he thinks there is a connection between them, a spark and he knows we have felt it too. This is why when he says he's been 'waiting to have (Tav),' since he 'first set eyes on (Tav),' before they make love for the first time, he really means it. (Or it could also be that he is very very good at seduction, something he learnt over two centuries by working for Cazador). He holds himself back to not lose control and hurt you when you make love for the first time, he also says he doesn't want bite you without your permission, he just wants to have fun and feel good together.
I reckon what he appreciates is Tav's intelligence (as he likes to outsmart people himself) and survivalist abilities (compliments it twice, 1. saying Tav is ‘quite the ally’ and 2. how Tav has survived everything that has come so far, which has impressed him) as he is extremely survivalist himself (as shown by his disapproval of choosing to take the poison from the druid healer). He wants to live, no matter what and take revenge on Cazador.
Astarion, Tav and Sex:
(Speculation)
As I wrote in my sexual character sketch of him, I don't think he takes sex lightly either, he likes to show that it isn't a big deal to him (as he does with everything else) but I doubt sex is just another fun physical activity to him. I don't think he's had the chance to be sexual in the past two hundred years and you're not only his first non-bestial feed, but also his first proper sexual partner since he's been a vampire. Maybe he was molested as a slave, I don't put that past Cazador, but molestation does not equate to sexual experience. So, I don't think he has even had sex in the last two hundred years or so he's been Cazador's slave. It is possible that he was involved with other slaves I don't know of them or what their 'social life' would have been like, if any. Maybe he did have sex with other slaves, maybe Cazador made him do sexual things to others, I don't know; but to conclude, I really doubt he has had a choice in anything sexual in the last two centuries and fast forward to his first taste of freedom, he meets us. Doubt he had time for sex between then and now.
(Not speculation)
He values sex, especially with Tav, because he is also genuinely annoyed when you tell him you're sleeping with someone else during the party, telling you sarcastically to enjoy your fun and to 'piss off,' while grimacing and looking away, while in the same breath saying he's not jealous. It comes across as if he is really offended and hurt that you chose someone else, not him. Especially if he really believes you share a special connection (that is not just the tadpole lel); he is upset that you didn't feel the same way he did because he certainly had hopes. It could also be that his pride is hurt.
Another reason I think he doesn't believe in the 'it's just sex,' philosophy is that when you tell him 'it's just sex, nothing serious,' he will reply by saying, 'serious or not, it's something,'. Also, he does not assume that having sex for fun won't change anything. He will start calling you 'lover' after your first time together and if you offer sex while you're called for by some other companion he would say 'we'll end tonight as friends,' because to him, you'd stop being friends and change into, well, lovers if you have sex. He clearly thinks there is value in the activity and he cherishes it, hence drawing you in, making you wait for it instead of just shagging you in the bushes (another idea he throws shade at indirectly when you refer to having sex with Shadowheart). He can be sentimental it would seem.
His sentimentality-
"Will this little adventure of ours be over?... Good. I don't want you to run off just yet"
Very early on in the adventure, he will start questioning what it will be like when you get rid of your tadpoles, as he looks at the stars. He questions if you and he will go their separate ways after that and it's clear he doesn't want to, either for practical reasons as he says you're a powerful ally and he 'still has need of (Tav),' or he's attached since he is lonely and you've shown him the respect that he hasn't been given in a long long time.
When you give him your blood he says it is a gift, a gift he will not forget.
He doesn't even consider killing you and the companions when the book of necromancy asks him to. The second remark about 'well, maybe, (companion name),' seems to be one of his jokes because he doesn't act upon it, especially if he says Shadowheart’s name as they both don't seem to get along at all, but it seems like a sarcastic jab more than a threat. A vampire, who is usually a lawful evil, would have done whatever the book said on principle, without question.
Someone who does betray you is Gale and might do so even going forward, a good guy who is really just hiding secrets that could harm everyone. If you don't give Gale artefacts to consume, he will go ahead and make a deal with Raphael without any prior discussion or hinting at it to you and then shit-talk you like he is throwing a tantrum whilst threatening to leave your party. Astarion himself is tempted to make the deal with Raphael on the fever night but he doesn't, he goes to ‘bed’ without doing so despite how extremely he believes in not dying. He probably does it because he considers it the same thing as being with Cazador, but the point here is he lets you know he was even thinking of it, Gale did not. Especially when Gale approves of you not taking the deal IN THE FIRST PLACE!
Astarion will be offended when you say you want someone else to end you if the tadpole takes over. He’ll say, 'Oh, I see how it is,' with an angry face. The guy is offended you don't trust him to do it well and that you chose someone else over him.
Despite himself, Astarion constantly wants safety and comfort, another reason he wants to be in the group is because there is safety in numbers and Astarion is extremely survivalist. He wants to hope but due to his abusive past, he cannot let it happen, actively pushing you away, saying 'I don't need anything from you,' when you try to comfort him. This is usually a cry for help from abuse victims. It is the feeling of being torn between needing help to get out of your bad situation and also fear of being betrayed by those you trusted.
He is not mindlessly cruel-
He has a very clear line between who should and shouldn't be hurt. Which is strange for a vampire. He does not want to hurt innocents (he disapproves when you want to hurt the entire world i.e innocents with your tadpole power; he also earnestly says he won't harm an innocent while trying to feed, only bandits and our foes as they were going to die anyway).
Anyone who digs their own grave can die suffocating, according to him but if helpless or 'innocents,' are hurting he wants to help them. I think he truly believes he was innocent when taken slave and is salty that no one came to help him, (”The strong had two centuries to pluck me from torture, but no one came”) which is why he supports helping Mayrina who was tricked by a hag, and not the tieflings who seem more than capable of helping themselves. One could say that he really did dig his own grave by choosing to be Cazador's spawn but he said that he did not know what accepting his offer of vampirism entails (i.e being a half-vampire slave), like a deal with the devil only the devil seems like a helpful samaritan- this would put him in the exact position as Mayrina's. Even if that isn't the case, what matters is he believes he's innocent and doesn't want others to go through what he did. The only exception to innocent argument, in my opinion, is that he is racist towards Goblins and other humanoid creatures, he considers Ogres and Goblins disgusting and won't risk his skin for them (but racism against them seems to be quite prevalent throughout this world amongst everyone, so this isn’t special to him).
"We killed some Goblins to save some tieflings. The tally of the lives didn't change much."
Another thing I'd like to address is the argument of how he enjoys the goblin path more than the tieflings’ path is because he is evil and hurting tieflings brings him joy. But, he enjoys killing in the tiefling path as much as the goblin path. There is no difference according to him because the body count remains the same, as he says. In my opinion, it was all the tiefling blood he could drink (he can actually get drunk off blood) and the open hedonism (vampires are hedonistic by nature) at the party with the goblins. Whereas the tiefling path was clean, no blood to drink and he was being lauded as a hero, which he hates. He hates virtue signalling. He wants to come off as evil with a devil-may-care attitude because he thinks that is what true power is, that is the only power he's known all his vampiric life through Cazador. He thinks truly powerful people can do anything and get away with it, “you can’t look at the world and tell me I am wrong”. This brings me to his bravado.
Astarion's bravado-
He wants to come off as a suave, smooth-talking, selfish rogue who cannot be trusted. He tells you that he would be disappointed in you if you trusted him, but he already trusts you himself. When you sell him out to the gur hunter, he is genuinely surprised and seems to be a bit torn up that you betrayed him. This could just be an expectation of one-sided loyalty that most narcissists have but Astarion is not a narcissist.
He is a massive liar, but his face always gives it away. He lies about having an enticing dream when he actually dreamt of Cazador having found him and recounting his commandments to him. He lies that he needs your blood because he is weak, but he actually needs to feed on a thinking creature to check whether or not he can break his master's command of 'thou shall not drink of thinking creatures'. He is elated not only from the taste but also that he can actually disobey his slaver. All of these are things he is scared to admit because he is wary of being taken advantage of.
He tries avoiding the past instead of thinking upon it, he does not like brooding but it clearly affects him every waking moment. He gets mad at us exhuming his past when he is still defined by it. He likes to show, or perhaps even think himself, that he has moved on from it and looks to the future but all of his actions are only about taking revenge. Revenge is always about being stuck in the past.
He will shirk off all of your attempts to console him while appreciating at the same time when you suceeed a pursuation check to pursuade him to share details about himself (another characteristic of lonely and cynical people, they want to be sure the person really cares and thus want to be encouraged to talk about themselves).
Why he is not just manipulating and seducing you-
If he was manipulating you, he would approve of even the choices you make that he disagrees with. He would not say he doesn't want to sleep with you, even on low approval, because sex is one of the surest ways to manipulate people and that will ensure a place for him in your party and your support. He seems to make a choice of it depending on how much he likes you, so I don’t usually agree with the theory that he is seducing you because he needs you.
---
Other Miscellaneous Notes:
He is not a good boy-
All of this shouldn't suggest he is a nice boy. He's sensitive but still a bad boy. I am still new to D&D so my knowledge isn't as extensive, but I know the vampires in forgotten realms are inherently evil, they can't help it. Astarion simply doesn't have a choice but to perform and revel in the evil things he does, it's in his nature. He enjoys cruelty, murder and hedonism. I would place Astarion as a Chaotic Evil at his worst and Chaotic Neutral at his best.
note: I would like to mention, alignments are only guidelines however and no real person ever acts only inside their alignments in any story, that makes them boring and Astarion is the best-written character in bg3 so far. He is very conflicted between a lot of his own aspects and that includes going against his nature.
Romance going bad-
If I imagine a typical evil vampire romance, by textbook definition, he will get possessive and jealous over Tav. He will forcefully convert them to a vampire or spawn so that he doesn't have to spend eternity alone if they die. He will become extremely paranoid over their safety and might suffocate them with extreme affection and obsession. Dark Desire does that to vampires, it twists every emotion for the worst and extreme.
note: But we have already seen that Astarion doesn't completely follow these attributes. Maybe they work differently in a story than in a campaign (I do not know anything about BG1 and BG2). (see- vampire lore v/s Astarion’s character conflicts below)
Can he be redeemed?-
I am usually not a big fan of redemption arcs but I do like some of them when the characters having it makes sense for their stories. Does it make sense for Astarion? It's too early to tell to be honest.
But so far, he has shown signs of not liking that he's a vampire. In fact, I think he really dislikes it.
Some examples are below:
He says eternity is much longer than he expected it to be when you ask him about his past.
He gets sad when he says he can't even remember his face, having never seen it since he became a vampire, his face is just a dark shape in his past. Then he gets angry, throws the mirror away and says, "...another thing I've lost"
When you’re in the underdark, he cites appreciation for being in the sun saying, "I'd much rather be outside, with the sun on my skin."
He misses his home or is at least curious about his past life (ref: the mirror in the cellar).
He also says he misses being able to look at himself, “Preening in the looking glass? Petty vanity? Of course, I miss it.”
He misses the taste of wine, it can be assumed he had a great love for fine spirits as he compares the taste of different blood types to different alcohols, which also shows he likes reminiscing upon his past.
In contrast to this, he has never shown to have pride over being a vampire. He appreciates the power that comes from it but there is no passion or pride in him for being an undead.
How I think he can be redeemed (if possible)-
"Vampires are usually the result of a dark pact and while the mortal may not make the deal with the goal of becoming a vampire in mind the dark powers they've negotiated with cares little and only seeks to sow as much evil and strife within the world as a result of such a deal."
So, what if Astarion is promised to some entity by Cazador and that is what his marks are for? They are written in infernal. What if we can bargain with the entity for Cazador instead and bring Astarion back to life through other means? This could be a path to possibly ‘redeeming’ Astarion and making him a human again.
Monster Manual page 295 has a sidebar "Player Characters as Vampires" that explains that vampirism is reversed in two ways:
-A wish spell
-Killing the character and bringing them back to life through revivify. (source, Reddit comment)
So if a situation arises that gives us the opportunity to do either of these things, I suppose we can bring Astarion back to life and make him an elf again. That is how I think he can be ‘redeemed’ because I do not see any other way for him to be a good vampire within the lore constraints, which may not be entirely an issue to be fair. (see- vampire lore v/s Astarion’s character conflicts below)
I also think, the book of necromancy he is so keen on reading will reveal him secrets about making Cazador alive again and hence weaker than him, or he will himself want to become alive after defeating Cazador.
note: I admit I think this would put a damper on people wanting to be his vampire queen/king but being a vampire in this world is not as romantic as it is in other fantasy worlds. The D&D guides even go as far as saying playing as a vampire is difficult because you truly have to be evil and make evil choices, that you should start as a spawn and then move on to becoming a true vampire over the campaign as it would be a very difficult being to play.
Astarion’s Past (Speculation according to 5e lore)-
Reference
note- Vampirism lore from The Forgotten Realms seems to be scarce but Astarion seems to follow some of the 5th edition rules so I'm assuming this reference is cool for theory crafting.
According to vampire lore, he could have been an okayish person in his life, not too good, not too bad. Maybe he was a true neutral.
"When a vampire comes into being they don't behave like the people they were in life. They are inverted, the chaste becoming temptresses, the kind becoming cruel, the once holy now finding glory in perversion. All their once positive qualities are specifically inverted to form a more personalized evil."
According to this description, it is viable to believe that he was true neutral as an elf because I think he is chaotic evil/neutral as the undead. That would be its evil inversion, would it not?
I have issues with this description as it is very vague and weird as ‘inverted’ suggests the good will become bad, bad will become good and neutral might stay neutral.
note: again, I would like to point out that alignments are just guides, no character or person truly ever acts only within their alignment.
- Conflicts between vampire lore and Astarion’s behaviour in-game:
"Inhuman, merciless, and uncaring about their earlier life."
This is very curious to me because we already know Astarion longs for his home and when we ask about his past life he gets sad, saying he doesn't remember. As stated above, he does already miss being a human and seems to dislike being a vampire.
“The vast majority of vampires are lawful evil, and none but the greenies attempt to maintain their inner humanity and remain even a neutral, let alone a good one.”
This is interesting because according to him, until Tav, Astarion was a greenie as in he didn't feed from thinking beings. (Did we lead him down the bad path? Lol). So he could have actively tried to retain some of his humanity and morality while under Cazador for all those years.
"Greed can be considered to be the warped form of charity. A generous cleric who becomes a vampire may acquire a taste for the blood of those whose mouths they once fed out of their own pocket. Luring them in with their known charity only to drain them of their lives and possesses."
This is interesting because Astarion is extremely greedy. So perhaps he was a generous noble?
(Spoilers for unreleased content):
The above speculation seems unlikely because, from the PAX East Gameplay Reveal, we know that he was a corrupt magistrate. He would pass out false sentences to feed people to Cazador for money. Seems that his greed has passed down from his real life to his vampiric life too. This seems to be a big oversight as 5e D&D guide has a table on how each good attribute is twisted in the afterlife for the worse.
It seems that Astarion is not a typical vampire and may not follow all the evil requirements of being a vampire. It could also be the tadpole but he exhibits behaviours that seem to be coming from a deeper sense of self formed over years and not just a new personality developed within days since the tadpole's infection.
End note:
Warning- here be big spoilers for Dragon Age: Inquisition characters.
I do not want it to sound like Astarion will never leave your side or that he'll support you through anything because he won't. He already doesn't, he openly disapproves of your noble choices. But he will not backstab you like Solas or Iron Bull did in Dragon Age: Inquisition. If he decides to leave you, it'll be through either your own betrayal (like setting the hunter upon him) or you both having differences in goals. Astarion's only goal is beating Cazador, if you don't support that, he will leave you. I really think it will be that simple. If anything, it might be like Sera leaving the inquisition upon differences in ideals.
Another way he could leave is through the inability to control the tadpole or his markings or Cazador somehow having control over him again.

Lostbelt Servants Often Don't Work as Chaldea Servants
I've reached a conclusion on why I dislike servant x Ritsuka pairings so much, and ended up spending a few hours thinking about some other thoughts.
When it comes to the gacha game format, you don't have enough time to develop every character equally, and certainly not the way fgo goes about it (Oh boy another lb6 centered event? You really shouldn't have Nasu...). As a result, oftentimes servants only ever get interludes (and sometimes events, but even those are shaky) to develop their bond with Ritsuka, and this is even worse for lostbelt/singularity villains, because they have to shed an entire dynamic and replace it with a new one. Sometimes this can work fine, or even improve the character, such as with characters like Cu Alter, Hessian Lobo, Jeanne Alter, Jason, and even arguably Avicebron, but oftentimes they can sort of... flounder.
Cu and Jeanne Alter succeeded because fundamentally there was that initial gap that comes from an enemy, not only because they were a villain but because we simply haven't developed a bond yet. So they showed us it, they showed Cu Alter learning to trust and rely on us in his interludes, we saw Jeanne do the same across multiple events. They didn't just abandon their old identity they had to built a new one off the corpses strewn by their old one.
Characters like Anastasia... don't get that, they get a facsimile of a bond developed because they don't want to restart from the very beginning of the relationship pole or be obligated to use all of their lostbelt characteristics.
So rather than showing Ritsuka and Anastasia growing a close bond and her developing a crush on him, we get one dream sequence where Anastasia confided in him that she kind of hates the people who killed her parents. Then it's just... "oh my master is utterly adorable" from her and then "Why don't you kiss her, master?" from Medea
Tumblr media
None of this was earned or developed, at best it was implied because other people say similar stuff about Ritsuka, but notably, none of those scenes include Anastasia. They're writing this interlude like it's an alternate timeline where Anastasia was a main servant who watched you grow and develop similar to Mash (Thanks to @300iqprower for making me realize this). There is no unique relationship, there's no event where they were forced together, we just have to assume that at some point Anatasia and Ritsuka hungout a bunch and she got a crush on him.
It feels more like a filled in template for a servant-master relationship than anything actually developing. Why does Anastasia like Ritsuka? Because he's nice, trustworthy, and strong. Great, the same applies to Mash, Ushiwakamaru, Melusine and so so many other servants. There is nothing to me that says she would love Ritsuka for any reason unique to Anastasia, in the same way I can look at her and Kadoc and see why they love each other in the crypter manga. There's no Ritsuka discussing how he can relate to having his opportunity to grow into an adult ruined, there's no Ritsuka having to fight by her side for an extended period of time, there's no Ritsuka helping her come to terms with her family's death, it's just... nothing. It's Anastasia having a crush on Ritsuka because it's Ritsuka.
And like... we have to see this this with so many servants. As much as I love Barghest and find Melusine interesting, to a massive degree they were made worse after lb6. The desire to protect Fae Britain and Aurora respectively was an intrinsic part of their character, and when none of those exist, there's just a big hole in their motivations and relationships. But rather than write elaborate depictions of what changes in their personality there is, Melusine decides that Ritsuka is their lover and Barghest does... cooking? And also wants to fuck Master sometimes.
Worse than remaining stagnant a lot of lostbelt characters actively plateau. Stuck in a hell where all their characterization is dependent on the unique setting of a lostbelt, but also being physically unable to do anything with that setting because then they have to deal with the baggage associated with it.
This is to the point where the only characters who become better or remain well written after their lostbelts are overwhelming the ones who completely sideset this issue. Yu Mei-Ren and Qin? Popped into throne of spirits. Percival, Habetrot, Aesclepius, and Gareth? Literally completely different characters. William Tell, and Odysseus? Lostbelt fuckery. So they develop a new character from scratch and are forced to deal with that.
But a lot of servants don't get that. We know Melusine's past and generic character traits, the game implies (doesn't show) how they grow to like Ritsuka, so we don't get to see any more of that develop. Rather we get to see whatever they decide they would fit best for the present, which typically is uninteresting and repeated.

Okay I don’t want this to be like an obnoxious millennial assumption because I’m positive that every generation has things like this, but the way autism and ADHD was treated for us in the 90’s and how it affects adult diagnoses is like, imo, so integral to our coming of age and the stories we tell and the way we’ve gotten to know ourselves, even the way it relates to our job market and economy and how we operate inside it, and especially the way a pandemic uncovered it for so many people and exposed the cracks and revealed that we were all just barely functioning and held together with popsicle sticks and anyway
Tumblr media
I say that because maybe it’s the un-diagnosed 90’s child in me but I feel particularly emotional about Keith’s arc in learning that he’s part Galra, and the way even the creators said they made him sort of prickly because of his biology, and I just !! Think so much about Keith’s neurotype as a part Galra!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Cause something about being diagnosed later in life is like, looking back at all the other ways you tried to handle yourself, all the missteps, maybe even misdiagnoses. Like, how many times did you try to treat ANXIETY without realizing you didn’t have an anxiety disorder, you just can’t deal with your family blaring the TV from the next room? How many times were you told you were lazy, or lying, when you didn’t know what executive dysfunction is?
Keith is such a lovely rich character because his prickliness is EARNED—we know what happened to him, we know he’s traumatized, we know he’s been treated poorly by many people in his life. We know that he grew up thinking that he’d been abandoned by one of the people who should’ve loved him the most, in the whole world. He even questions that in his vlog—he makes the connection that he has trouble with people because of his mom.
But I just wonder like, how much of it is just his biology. Not understanding the body he’s in, being completely ignorant of one whole half of his culture. Had he ever mutated before the TBP fight? Did it take him by surprise, did it frighten him? ((* This is head canon territory LMAO there’s no way to really know—like, is he able to do this because he just spent so much time with Krolia, or does Shiro going That’s the Keith I remember mean they used to have really primal sex that turned his eyes yellow? Lol))
Like when we talk about even the most broad generic terms of saying someone is neurodivergent, we don't even need to put a real life label on Keith. Like he's literally not human! Of course his brain looks different! Of course he functions differently! And I wonder how much is nature v nurture -- if he knew the truth about his mom, if his dad had lived, if he'd been allowed a normal childhood, would he still have been a weird kid?
Cause like, even seeing the way Shiro is able to get through to him, we see ways that he allowed for thrill seeking, and he didn't judge Keith for stealing his car. It reminds me of like, what we know now about asking children to sit still in school, and how perhaps some children would do better with standing desks. Shiro wants him to behave and succeed, and doesn't judge him for being a car thief, and gets through to him by bringing him cliff diving. And it just feels like this clue, you know, that nothing is wrong with Keith, he's just living in a weird place where people don't get him.
It’s just really special to me, because there’s so many pieces in the sequence of events of Keith’s character arc, and I know I’ve said this a handful of times now, but I really sincerely believe it’s the only thing the show really nailed. Accepting himself during the BOM Trial -> MOMENTS later learning something ver important about his biology -> spending time with Krolia -> coming back to pilot Black when he’s READY and WANTS to (unlike the first time, when he resisted) -> becoming a pragmatic strong leader by the end.
Gosh idk.
I don’t really have anywhere to go with this, it’s just something I was thinking about today and it gets me real emotional. Like, Keith must have had these moments, re-evaluating who he’d been before he’d known, finally understanding why he was Like That, and it’s so healing to imagine him accepting his past self and forgiving it because he understands now.

A Night to Remember
Aziraphale (about the ball he's planning):
Tumblr media
A Night to Remember:
A book by Walter Lord, published in 1955. It is a non-fictional account of what happened on board the Titanic before and during the catastrophe (it was also made into a movie in 1958). Sinking ship, sounds familiar? Check out my post on Good Omens and Lord Jim.
In A Night to Remember, the author uses interviews with 63 survivors of the catastrophe and other first-hand accounts to weave together a realistic account of what happened to the Titanic and its passengers. How is this relevant to GO? Well, the author of the book got praise for his unconventional treatment of chronology, time and space (check out my post on GO queering plot/narrative).
Apparently, he used a multitude of perspectives to present the same event from different POVs, creating multiple narratives that are arranged in a way that juxtaposes contradicting facts and emotions. And what for? To show the “human element” of the disaster rather than the mythology of it. Sounds familiar?
I find this intertextual reference especially intriguing seeing as Aziraphale’s dance in the bookshop is followed by disaster, and Aziraphale (the captain of this particular metaphorical ship) is too enmeshed in his fantasy of love and romance that he does not see the danger ahead, even when warned by Crowley. And obviously the consequences of that particular night are far-reaching.
Here's a bonus quote from Wikipedia:
“Lord updates the popular interpretation of the Titanic disaster by portraying it in world-historical terms as the symbolic and actual end of an era, and as an event which "marked the end of a general feeling of confidence." Uncertainty replaced orderliness, and the ship's sinking marked the beginning of the twentieth century's "unending sequence of disillusionment. Before the Titanic, all was quiet. Afterward, all was tumult."
Tumblr media
But not enough: “A Night to Remember” is also a Song by Shalamar from 1982:
When you love someone, it's natural, not demanding And that's one thing I'm proud to say I've found in you I'm so glad we reached an understanding Now I know my heart is safe with you, ooh So now my love to you, baby, I surrender
Get ready, tonight Gonna make this a night to remember Get ready, oh, baby, tonight Gonna make this a night to remember
Celebrations in the heart 'cause we're united And there's nothing in this world to come between me and you We're together, and it keeps me so excited To think of what the power of love can do, ooh And I'm filled with a love that's, oh, so tender
This night you won't forget Gonna make this a night to remember 'Cause your love I won't regret Gonna make this a night to remember
Get ready, (baby) tonight (darling) Gonna make this a night to remember Get ready, (it won't be like the past) tonight (I will make it last) Gonna make this a night to remember
Let's make a toast to those who helped make this occasion They turned their back on love, and that's what drove you straight to me Now to you I make a lasting dedication I'll show you all that love and life can be, ooh And each day that I live I will deliver
Get ready, (this night you won't forget) tonight Gonna make this a night to remember Get ready, ('cause your love, I won't regret) tonight Gonna make this a night to remember
Get ready, (baby) tonight (darlin') Gonna make this a night to remember
Tumblr media
In my reading, this is how Aziraphale feels during the dance. He is totally caught up in the fantasy of “a love that’s, oh, so tender” and he really makes this grand gesture to make it a night to remember for him and Crowley. The lines that get me most here are “I’m so glad we reached an understanding” (oh no), “to think of what the power of love can do” (a 25-lazarii miracle, perhaps?) and “Now to you I make a lasting dedication/ I'll show you all that love and life can be, ooh/ And each day that I live I will deliver” (I am sure this is what Aziraphale is trying to prove to Crowley all the time, in his own way …)

Memory Troubles - Hannibal Lecter Imagine (Hannibal)
Tumblr media
Title: Memory Troubles
Pairing: Hannibal Lecter X Reader
Word Count: 815 words
Warning(s): kidnapping, violence, mention of drugging
Summary: (Y/n) wakes up in Florence and finds themself with Hannibal. However, there's a major problem with the current sequence of events: (Y/n) has no memory of joining Hannibal on his trip.
Author's Note: This was the original plotline I was going to go with for my sunshine OC, but I scrapped it in favor of my current plotline where the OC wasn't in Europe.
What sunshine OC? I'm glad that you asked. You can read about them here!
PART TWO HERE
-------------------------------
Everything felt off.
It was all a bit blurry around the edges. My brain couldn't sort through the pieces of what I was seeing. I heard music in another room.
I walked through the too fancy place, trying to find my grounding. I found the main room soon enough. It was dark outside. Was it late?
There was a figure leaning in the window. Still so blurry. They were sketching something.
"You're awake," the figure spoke, closing the book they were sketching in and starting to walk toward me.
I blinked a few more times, my focus finally coming back to me. "Hannibal?"
"How are you feeling?"
"Where am I," I asked, ignoring his question. He didn't seem to mind.
He stopped a few steps in front of me. "Florence."
"Florence? As in Florence, Italy?"
"I owe you an apology," he replied, using one hand to guide my chin so I would move however he wanted and using the other hand to check my pupils. "You may experience some problems with your memory and focus."
It was as he was checking on me that the pieces started falling into place.
The first thing I remembered was Will. Will on the kitchen floor, soaked from the rain, blood pouring out of a wound on his stomach.
The shock of the memory made me shove Hannibal away from me and move away from him.
"Will," I muttered. "Oh my God. You killed Will."
Hannibal didn't move.
He instead watched me scramble to put my thoughts together.
"And Abigail," I mumbled. I suddenly felt like my hands were still covered in blood. I could smell it. "No, no, no. Alana and Jack... Jack was in the pantry. Will told me. He told me just before... before you attacked me."
"Fascinating how quickly memories can return, even after days of being under the influence," Hannibal said it all so casually.
"I was trying to help Will. I was crying. He tried to warn me. He... He said my name. And then you... you slammed my head into the counter next to him. And... And then it's all a blur. I can't remember getting here."
"You were medicated," he confessed. "I was worried about you injuring yourself or me. It was the best course of action."
"You drugged me to get me here," I asked. "I would never have agreed to come with you!"
"You shouldn't strain yourself," he continued.
I took another few steps away from him.
"I'm leaving," I muttered.
"Where will you go," he asked.
"Home."
"What money will you use to get there?"
I paused. I clenched my jaw. He was right. I had no way home. No way to be free. I was screwed.
"I found us a home," he walked over. "A place for us to be free and happy. You'll adore it here. I will do everything to make you happy."
"Hannibal," I said quietly. "You... You can't keep me here. You know that. This isn't love. What good does keeping me here do if I can't love you the way you wish-"
He grabbed my jaw, squeezing hard enough for me to yelp. There were going to be marks left on the skin.
It was a moment of pure rage that Hannibal never expressed. A side of him that terrified me to my core.
"I have no desire to lose you," he said simply. "Not when you can finally see every part of me."
His hold on my jaw softened to only cup the side of my face.
He leaned forward and pressed his lips to mine. I froze on the spot, my eyes screwed shut. I didn't know what to do.
He was right.
I had nothing to save me. Everyone that I knew was dead. My family had forgotten about me long ago. No money to my name. All I had was him.
Just how he wanted it.
He had won.
He pulled away from me slowly.
"You must be starving," he said, running his thumb along my cheek. "I'll make you something."
He guided me to a dining room table. I sat down. I was still shaking.
I almost flinched as he pressed a kiss to my head.
"I love you, darling," he hummed.
I didn't respond.
I gasped when he grabbed me again. His hand wrapped around my throat. He was so calm. It scared me more than if he was just angry with me.
"I love you, darling," he repeated.
"I love you too," I whispered nervously.
He let go of me. I took a deep breath.
I watched him walk away before placing my hand over my mouth to cover my sobs.
I knew then that I was going to be there for a while.
All I could do now was survive.
This was my journey through hell, and I needed to find the other side.

I might as well just be an Aurene and elder dragon appreciation blog at this point, but the final fight in War Eternal where you dive into Kralk's heart and go to a magical mind scape that represents kralk's torment from all the magic they've been consuming. As the true voice of Kralk comes out while you beat back the angry and paranoid persona, they say some very prescient things.
Kralkatorrik: Child of my child... [...] You are more than I. Death does not stop you. The magics do not torment you. They belong within you.
We know so little about Kralk from the previous cycle, all we learn from Glint is that Kralk knew something bad would happen to themselves in the future so they gave birth to Glint so she could see clearer what that nebulous threat was. All the anxieties that Kralk had did pan out, the mortal races of tyria did rise up against him, the exalted turned his champion (Glint) against him, death was the end for him and for his place in the balance of magic, the domain of magic he absorbed messed with his mind. Every one of those worries never touches Aurene in his eyes.
Kralkatorrik: Come to me.
Commander: Aurene, what's happening?
Aurene: I can...feel his pain.
Aurene: A million agonies. So, so, so much suffering.
Aurene: I can feel all the magics in him. They're not in harmony.
Kralkatorrik: My heart is yours.
Commander: Is this some kind of trick?
Aurene: No. I think he wants us here.
Kralkatorrik's Torment: ROAAAARGH!!!
When you first reach Kralk's heart he's already done and wants Aurene to take his place, the warring and bickering between him and his siblings is harmoney in Aurene alone. In his blind desire to be at peace within himself Kralk has been consuming random other energies, hoping they'd provide a balance somehow. But all of that pales compared to the child he accidentally brought into being, to Glint who could see the one path to freedom for Kralkatorrik in Aurene. At this point Kralk must know this, in the novel of Destiny's Edge I don't remember if Glint and Kralk talk at all, but if they did she would have bragged about her perfect daughter she would never meet.
Kralkatorrik: Torment is blinding. It lies. Its pollution steals my sense. It promises: destroy everything and the pain will cease.
Aurene: I understand, grandfather. We'll end it for you.
Aurene probably misunderstood here, I think Kralk was trying to describe the Void corruption, because the meta-event in Dragon's End in EoD against Soo-Won says things along the same line, let it destroy everything and the pain will stop.
Kralkatorrik: Your first words... I heard them.
Aurene: I'm not you.
Kralkatorrik: But you are of me. And soon I will be of you. Your mother assumed that my vision...
Aurene: She thought it terrified you.
Kralkatorrik: Nothing terrifies an Elder Dragon. Not even death. This you have already learned.
Aurene: I no longer fear death.
The wiki says Kralk's line about hearing Aurene's first words is when you're chasing him out of the mists and Aurene yells at Kralk to look at her. But I want it to actually be when Aurene is first born and tells the Commander her name. The fear he'd been running from for centuries finally had a name.
As soon as Kralk kills Aurene and flees back into the mists, only to be followed by the fear he thought he had just killed. He must have finally had to admit his end couldn't be prevented and started to come to terms with his own demise and the future Glint had been fighting for. (Glint does pop back up in the chase sequence in the mists to harp on about her amazing daughter).
From what Soo-Won tells Aurene in the post event of the Dragon's End meta event the Elder Dragons certainly fear death, just like any creature that can die. I think what Kralkatorrik is trying to do is help build up the future of Dragons in Tyria.
Kralkatorrik's Torment: THESE CREATURES MAKE YOU WEAK!Kralkatorrik: They are her strength.
Kralkatorrik's Torment: SHE BETRAYS HER OWN KIND!
Kralkatorrik: She is the first of her kind.
Even more evident Kralk is trying to be a positive influence on Aurene in his final moments in these lines where he fights against the torment alongside you.
Kralkatorrik: Child of my child... I only hope that you never have to kill what you love. Now mortal, return my blood to my heart.
Kralkatorrik's last line implies that at some level he was sad to have to face Glint as soon as he awoke in this cycle and learned of his physical weakness to his own blood in that fight, and when we trapped him in a mountain he knew we were using the same technique again.
Finally free of the influence on his mind, but in no way able to survive the ordeal, he wants to end his life on his own terms, a final bit of defiance to the anxiety that had plagued him since he tried to foresee his own death all those years ago.

Note
how about a Miranda one shot where her and reader have to go undercover as a couple but Miranda is a bit awkward/nervous because she has a crush on reader but also has never kissed a girl? And to make it more believable, they have to all touchy so reader guides Miranda on what to do? I feel like smut should happen but totally up to you and what you would be willing to do.
Hey Anon!
Of course you can, it was super fun to write. I hope it lives up to your expectations!

A/N: I am so sorry to everyone for taking so long to post nowadays. Life really isn't liking me at the moment so I'm struggling to find the time to write.
--------------------------------------------
"Put your right hand on my shoulder." Miranda's gorgeous sapphire eyes widen at your words. "I'm sorry-?" She chokes, standing in front of you as a fresh wave of nervousness crashes over her. A soft chuckle escapes you before you grab her hand, guiding it over your arm to gently rest on your shoulder. Resting your arm under hers, you reach under her arm to splay your hand over her shoulder blade as your free hands intertwine. The touch of your skin against hers sends electricity down your spine, a hot desire burning in your core as it does.
When your boss, Adrian, had assigned the two of you to a case together, never did you think that you'd end up here. Your main suspect, Stella Cortez runs a charity ball every year and both you and Miranda were attending in hopes of asking her a few questions. 16 year old, Scotty Denzel, was found washed up on the beach two days ago and the two of you had been quick to find a lead. Stella owns a dance studio in which Scotty used to attend but turns out he'd been drastically lagging behind in his payments and the two of them would often be seen fighting behind the theatre.
Truth be told however, you have been horribly distracted all night. Ever since you lay eyes on Miranda tonight, her body draped in an elegant light blue ballgown, your thoughts have been nothing but pure. You'd always had an attraction to the blonde Constable but the sight of her in a ballgown, so innocent and pure, unleashed many desires inside you.
"The waltz is a simple repetitive dance, right foot back, left foot back, bring your right foot to your left, forward with your left, forward with your right and then finally bring your left foot to your right and repeat." You say, gently leading Miranda through each step as you explain her movements. Her eyebrows are furrowed as she concentrates on not standing on you. A grin pulls at your lips as she gets into the flow of it, letting you lead her around the room. Winding between the other dancing pairs, you spot Stella and her partner Kayn performing an elaborate sequence of waltz manoeuvres.
Miranda's eyes finally lift from her feet as the two of you waltz closer and closer to your suspect. Smiles pull at both of your faces as the two of you get lost in each other's eyes. "Where on earth did you learn to dance?" She grins, joy lighting up her features. "I grew up rather wealthy, my parents have always been big on charity events and enrolled me in ballroom dancing lessons for 14 years. I started when I was 4 and the moment I turned 18, I left and never went back. But clearly some things just stay with you." You reply, using your left hand to spin her away from you before pulling her back to repeat the box step as she squeals at the unexpected move.
While many coworkers found Miranda's bubbly personality obnoxious and overbearing, you had been nothing but intrigued by it. On this case alone, the two of you had shared many interesting conversations. The amount of energy the beautiful woman exerts, has only energised you, willing you to work more diligently. Despite not being at the precinct long, it's been obvious that no one respected her. Whether it's because of her personality or her appearance, she has always been used as a scapegoat for other detectives' anger. But you had never once had anything bad to say about her, she always made work that much more enjoyable and the way your heart skips a beat when you're around her is an intoxicating feeling.
An excited laugh escapes her as you begin to lead her through more and more advanced manoeuvres until the two of you end up dancing next to Stella. "Stella Cortez?" You ask, holding up your police badge as the middle-aged woman turns to look at the two of you. Her face drops at the sight of the badge and she instantly picks up the hem of her dress, turning on her heels to sprint away. Hitching your dress up, you are quick to pursue her as Miranda follows not far behind. "Stupid heels!" Can be heard from your blonde coworker followed by two heavy bangs, no doubtedly from her kicking her shoes off.
Tensing your shoulder, you barge through the crowd of people, knocking most of them over as you do. "Sorry! Sydney police!" You call over your shoulder, eyes still locked on the brunette dashing around the corner in front of you. Quickly catching up to her, you leap, throwing your arms around her waist as you tackle her to the ground. Your legs are on either side of her hips, holding her in place as Miranda comes around the corner, gasping for breath. Ripping off a part of your dress, you hurriedly bind her wrists with the fabric.
—----------------------------
You can't help the smile pulling at your lips as you walk back to your desk. Stella had confessed to everything, she hadn't meant for Scotty to die. One of their arguments about his missed payments got out of hand and she broke a chair over his head. Little did she know, he had suffered a traumatic head injury a few years ago and had lasting brain damage so the impact of the chair killed him. She hurriedly drove him to a cliff overlooking the ocean and dumped him off. She thought she had gotten away with it until the newspapers were flooded with news of a dead body on the beach.
Grabbing your raincoat from the back of your chair, you pull it over your shoulders as you exit the precinct. The cool night air hits your face as you walk across the darkened carpark. As you reach into your pocket for your keys, you see a tall blonde woman in police uniform walking hunched over in the rain along the dimly lit sidewalk. "Miranda!" You call out and she instantly turns around. A relieved grin pulls at her lips as she sees you calling her over to you. "Get in, I'll give you a ride."
"Thank you." She breathes, quickly shutting the door to your car as she gets in. Turning your keys in the ignition, you grin. "Thought you'd rather not walk in the rain." Miranda hurriedly nods as you reverse your car out of the park. "So, ballroom dancing? Does the gorgeous Detective Y/N have any other hidden talents?" She grins, fondly digging her arm into your side as you chuckle.
"Well what were you thinking?" You respond as she laughs, shaking her head. "I don't know, but you know how to ballroom dance and you seem to have perfected the art of running away from the balls in heels, so undercover spy?" The two of you can barely contain your laughter, tears forming in Miranda's eyes as she doubles over in her seat, holding her stomach. Gasping for air, you finally manage to regain your composure, shaking your head no to her question as you grin.
"Nothing like that, as I previously mentioned my parents were big on charity events. As a child they forced me to be someone I'm not. I wanted to be outside, having fun, playing games on the backfield with the boys at school. We had very different ideas on how I should act. They wanted a perfect princess, always putting me in glamorous dresses and makeup, making me learn ballroom dancing and to be the perfect lady. After a few years, I started rebelling. Every event we went to, I ran away from. I'd meet up with the boys from school and we'd go cause havoc, and I'd look absolutely ridiculous. A young female in a fancy ballgown and makeup with matching gloves running through town with some scruffy young boys chucking mud at the houses, breaking windows and trashing mailboxes. It was definitely a sight."
Both of you had fallen back into laughter by the time you finished talking. Joy lighting up Miranda's face as she grins, her eyes are focused on you. A warm feeling fills her body as she watches you driving, a smile pulling across your face. Flicking your eyes over to her, you catch her eye, giving her a cheeky smile before returning your eyes to the road. Her eyes, however, don't leave you as they trail down your body with a foreign warm emotion coursing through her veins.
The two of you emerge into many more bouts of laughter during the car ride, talking about many fond childhood memories. It isn't long before you pull into her apartment complex parking lot and the car is filled with a gentle silence. Reaching for the handbrake, your skin tingles with desire as your hand brushes over hers. The two of you intake a breath, catching each other's eyes. Darting your gaze down to her lips, you look back at her gorgeous blue eyes. Your thumb brushes over the back of her hand as you lean in. She pauses, embarrassment flooding over her cheeks at her next words. "I- I actually haven't kissed a girl before."
Reading her facial expression, your hand gently squeezes hers. "It's okay, if you're not comfortable, I can stop. I don't want to do anything that you're not sure about." She quickly shakes her head, squeezing your hand back. "I want to… I just don't want to be reading the wrong messages." You give her a comforting smile upon hearing this. "I like you Miranda. I would be honoured to be your first female kiss. You're not reading anything wrong." This was all it took for her to close the gap between the two of you.
The feeling when your lips touch is unlike anything you've ever felt before. A hot desire fills your body as chills fall over your skin, a deep hunger awakening inside you. Her free hand runs over your side as the kiss deepens. "I like you too." She murmurs and you grin against her lips as she pulls you closer. Brushing your teeth gently over her lower lip, you bring it into your mouth, eliciting a soft moan from her. Your core burns at the sound, the single noise fueling the desire for more as her hands desperately grasp at your waist. "Did you want to take this inside?" You ask, gasping for air as the kiss finally parts. A frantic nod escapes her as the two hurriedly grab your things and exit the car. Her hand grasps yours as the two of your hearts race, desperately needing to feel each other's skin against your own.
The minute the elevator doors closed, your back hits the wall, her hands cupping your face as you two continue your passionate kiss. Your hands desperately grasping for hips, you pull her body closer to you as a lustful moan escapes both of your lips. A sharp ding fills the elevator and your hands intertwine again as the two of you race to her apartment. Grabbing her keys, she quickly unlocks her door with shaking hands. Shutting the door behind you, the two of you grab for each other as your lips reconnect. She hurriedly guides you back, the two of you blindly stumbling into her bedroom as she pushes you back onto her bed, standing in between your legs. Both of you are heavily breathing as your hands quickly unbutton her light blue uniform shirt. She quickly shakes it off her shoulders, revealing a lacy black bra perfectly cupping her breasts.
Pausing, you flick your eyes up to hers. "Are you sure?" You ask, gasping for air. She nods. "Couldn't be more sure." Her hands desperately tug at the hem of your shirt, helping you pull it over your head as you sit up, grinning. You make quick work of unbuckling her belt and her pants are discarded on the floor as your lips trail over her lower stomach. Her breath hitches as your hands gently trail over her inner thighs, still peppering her abdomen with kisses. Lying down on the bed, you pull her down with you, quickly rolling on top of her. Your hands grab her wrists, gently holding them down as you straddle her lap. "You're so gorgeous, baby." You murmur, attaching your lips to her collarbone. A soft whimper escapes her as you gently bite down on her sensitive skin, running your tongue over the small teeth indents. A deep maroon spreads over her pale skin as you suck the skin into your mouth, eliciting a moan from her.
The sight of her, a desperate mess beneath you, makes your arousal drip down your thigh, a deep desire burning in your core. Trailing your lips down her collarbone, you swiftly unclip her bra before running your tongue over her nipples. Her back arches at the sensation, a pleasured whimper escaping her. "God, you sound so heavenly moaning for me. Tell me darling, what do you want?" You murmur, gently grazing your teeth over her now hardened mounds. A gasp escapes her as she responds. "I-I want you to touch me please." She mumbles shyly. Pressing your lips to hers you smile before lightly dragging your mouth down her skin. "Good girl."
Positioning yourself in between her legs, you gently graze her skin as you grab the waistline of her underwear between your teeth. They join the ever growing pile of clothes on her floor as you pepper kisses up her inner thigh. Her hands entangle themselves in your hair as you work closer and closer to her heat. The sight of her wet cunt makes your own arousal continue to drip down your thigh. A moan escapes the both of you as you dart your tongue out to taste her. "You taste amazing darling." You say as you suck her clit into your mouth, making her back arch off the bed as you do.
The sounds leaving Miranda's lips are divine, you take great pride in knowing you have this effect on her. Flicking your eyes up her body, your core burns as you see her face displaying nothing but pleasure, her eyes closed and her lips slightly parted. Her bare chest rises and falls with each breath, her stomach pulled tight as her legs stretch out over your shoulders.
Your name falls off her lips as you run your fingers over her soaked entrance, letting her arousal run down your digits. "Fuck, Y/N please." She gasps as your tongue lazily trails circles around her clit, teasing her as you insert your fingers inside her before withdrawing them. A smile grows on your face as you watch her back arch, slipping two fingers deep inside her. Curling them up, you apply pressure to her sweet spot as your tongue picks up pace, flicking over her sensitive mound. A string of moans escapes her as you begin to slowly pump your fingers into her sweet spot. "More, please, I need you to fuck me harder." Her hips grind over your hand as she says this.
"Such a good girl for me aren't you?" You grin as she desperately nods. How could you deny her request? Your fingers increase their speed, her legs beginning to shake on your shoulders. "You're doing so well for me, darling." You murmur, the vibrations of your voice over her sensitive mound are enough to send her over the edge. "Fuck, I-." She didn't have enough time to finish her sentence before her body contorted with pleasure. A wave of euphoria crashing over her as your name escapes her in a string of moans. You slow down your pace, helping her ride out her high as her breathing becomes heavier. Crawling back up her body, her fingers shakily unhook your bra before she discards your pants and underwear. Your lips crash together, both of you moaning out in pleasure as you grind your hips over hers.
Helping her sit up, you lift your leg over hers as you pull her closer. Aligning your soaking cunts, she brings her lips to yours as you begin to grind your clit on hers. One hand on your lower back, her other one pushes the back of your head closer as your arms tightly wrap around her waist. The sound of your arousal mixing with hers is sinful, filling the room along with your moans. "Fuck, you feel so good." You groan, grinding harder against her as you gently nip her neck with your teeth. A coil tightens in your core and you know it won't take you long to finish. By the sounds elicited from her, you can tell she's close again.
Feeling her legs shake around you and more arousal leak from her is all you need before euphoria rushes through your veins. Your head rushes with dizziness as your bodies twitch uncontrollably, pulling each other close. The two of you gasp for air as you come down from your highs. Gently brushing a sweaty strand of hair from her face, you tenderly run your lips over hers, a smile on both of your lips. "Are you ok darling? It wasn't too much?" You murmur as she shakes her head.
"It was perfect." She mumbles as she pulls you down onto the bed with her, wrapping her arms around you. You bring your lips to hers, giving her a gentle kiss as the moonlight falls over your faces. The two of you quickly let your exhaustion overtake you. Feeling her breathing even out, you smile at the sight of her gorgeous blonde hair falling gently over her cheek. Placing your lips on her forehead, you relax into her embrace, quickly falling asleep not long after.

HELLO FRIENS I HAVE A WESKER REQUEST, A WESKQUEST IF YOU WILL…
What do you think dealing with a self aware yandere Wesker would be like?
Do you think he can see you playing other games (or killers if it’s DBD) and gets jealous and starts like trying to get your attention or makes it so you just…can’t play those games/killers anymore?
Like I imagine him subtly trying to just sorta…get the entity to lock some killers for you, or trying to epic hacker man his way into deleting files off your computer so the only games you can play are his.
What do you think dealing with his ass would entail? 🤔🤔
Also I love you guys’s work btw!! I’ve been having a tough time finding some real good Wesker x reader stuff that I haven’t read already and you guys are keeping me FED!!!!! 🥺 THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE!!!
Helloo!! Someone had to feed us so why not me?
But yes it depends on the game!
Dbd Wesker locks you out from playing survivor and any other killer besides him, he knows that you would feel bad if you tried to fix it because that would mean potentially saying goodbye to him so you’ll do almost anything he wanted to do. And he wants to spend time with you. Not allowed to play survivor because the other resident evil characters “don’t deserve your time”, can’t play the other killers because he’ll get jealous, so he locks you out from playing anything other than him. Try to play the tutorial to play as the trapper? Nope. Just him.
You can prestige the other killers but you can’t play as them, you’re only allowed to play as him and give him the other killers’ perks. He might allow you to play survivor once he figures out how to copy himself onto a survivor so you’ll continue to play as him…even though he doesn’t fit the survivor role, he’ll do it for you since you want to play survivor so much.
It’s either a deal with the entity or him being sick and tired of you playing other killers and survivors and doing something about it himself. Entities and rules be damned. Will not outright tell you though…even if you do know he’s sentient.
In Resident evil, Wesker definitely makes it harder for you to get through the game and simply watches as you go through it, it’ll take longer and that’s what he wants. For you to stay longer with him, even though you’re playing as Chris and Jill, and then during the end game where you can play as him, he makes the sequence as long as possible, to feel your comforting control as you two go through the level together.
Resident evil Umbrella Chronicles? You’re stuck with him most of the game and he absolutely loves it. There’s nothing better than having you by his side the whole time. He still watches on during some events but at least you’re still with him, giving that same warm control over his aim.
You only see him briefly in RE 2…and he’s not very happy about that but there’s not much he can do about it either. However, he still watches your playthroughs, you’re still his player after all.
In resident evil 4 mercenaries, he’s definitely locking you out of playing the other characters. There’s only him that you’ll ever need to play as after all, you’re his player and he is the only one who can truly be your best character. He also gets jealous if you coo over Leon in the main game and might just have to edit the game code to fix his character model onto his, so you’ll continue to fawn over him instead. He’s very adamant that you spend time with him and doesn’t really like when you play other games but will watch from his little place on the screen.
In RE 5….oh brother you’re in a for a whole ride. First of all, he’s fucking pissed you’re playing as Chris and Sheva, he notices how you love to take screenshots of him in battles with him, so he makes sure to do all of his semi-rare animations for you to take photos of. Although he hates the thought of you playing as Chris or Sheva, he does love to hear you laugh as your friend gets charged by him, scaring them. You once ran around him in circles and he could not hit you even when he tried and good god did that make him angry but entertained. You’re so clever he would think. But once you finish the main story and start playing mercenaries and the other bonus content…and you’re taking more pictures of him. He will also make sure you will only ever play as him in mercenaries, he doesn’t need you to be playing as Chris now that he’s available to play as. As both STARS era and current era of him, you don’t need anything or anyone else. He also watches you play other games though, he likes watching you think.
Just be careful though…if these guys know of each other’s existence, unless they’re the same sentient Wesker following you through every game, they’re going to be very jealous.

whats your opinion on caleb and evelyn (at least from what very little we know of them-)
imo the whole caleb clawthorne thing is like. one of the most pointless things in the show ever
I have called them and their connection to Belos "TOH's final trick". TOH has a single trick up its sleeve that is great for fanfic writers and TERRIBLE for a narrative. They introduce really compelling relationships and ideas and then they never do anything with them. It happens with Amity and Luz, Amity and Willow, the Hexide Squad and the Coven System, Hunter and Belos, etc. etc. All of these concepts present tantalizing issues that one could really delve in deep to and find a lot of meaning... But TOH isn't interested. It is more interested in a blog about how deep Amity's character is implied to be rather than doing anything with that depth, hence why so many people hooked onto how awful the confrontation with her parents would eventually be and then the show itself just... Has her in like three minutes of that episode and her confrontation doesn't feel like the main point of it even if it's the climax. And then it's effectively over and any issue between Lumity is never brought up again.
Caleb and Evelyn are the same but with a bit of FNAF storytelling thrown in. The pictures are vague after all so people can interpret them in different ways for what they mean. The cast has been coy as to the actual events. It's a multiple choice backstory for your villain that ranges from irredeemable monster to sympathetic villain. That way the show can claim to have a complex villain that doesn't technically invalidate the fact that they have no interest in writing a complex villain, nor do they want to need to.
But it was also one straw too many. Lumity getting together paid off in some way that old narrative baggage of Amity's, even if less powerfully than it could have. Hunter being possessed and fighting off Belos doesn't have the weight it should and I have problems with how selfish the reasoning is rather than ideological but it is a payoff to that relationship. However, a genuinely real amount of time is spent in S3, and S2, building up that Belos is something more than a genocidal, egotistical asshole. Caleb and Evelyn are a LOT of this. So what's the payoff?
There is none. Beating him isn't an ideological victory. They don't come up like Lief did for beating Andrias to pay that off. In fact, they come up less in the final fight than they do during the fight in King's Tide where the heroes LOSE. So they spent some of the very limited time they had to wrap up their story on a subplot about Belos' backstory that doesn't actually inform us of anything, doesn't affect anything and has no payoff except the most obvious one.
It's literally Willow's story except for your PRIMARY ANTAGONIST'S BACKSTORY.
The fact that the majority of the meat of it is done in a really just AWFULLY animated set piece who's literal writing is boilerplate at best does not help it at all. The best parts of this mechanically are the portraits in Hollow Mind and they're vague and that's IT. Otherwise, it's clunky for the most part. I'll give the moment when monster Belos sees Caleb as he tries to take on a new form is neat but it tells us nothing and feels out of character in the end that he'd give enough of a shit to be haunted by his brother, especially after he's killed his brother so many times. Honestly, the Golden Guards looking like Caleb even NOW just makes me think the Collector is right: He likes hurting his brother. Why else would he not finally stop after the hundredth betrayal? Unless he gets off on the moment of their betrayal I guess.
It's just not good and a casual fan is going to like it even less because they won't really absorb and think the portraits so to them, it's just one really awkward sequence in the first special, an eerie sequence that doesn't add to anything in the second and then is sir not appearing in the third. That's not engaging.
Since little of it is engaging, it fails to function as a trick. After all, any magician will tell you that everything is about misdirection in their craft. Without it, a trick becomes nothing but smoke and mirrors instead of magic.

Btw, mentioned FNAF so may as well say here: Saw it and really liked it. I keep considering making a blog about it and then just... not.
I have a public Discord for any and all who want to join!
I also have an Amazon page for all of my original works in various forms of character focused romances from cute, teenage romance to erotica series of my past. I have an Ao3 for my fanfiction projects as well if that catches your fancy instead. If you want to hang out with me, I stream from time to time and love to chat with chat.

I've been toying with the idea of the "Superman > Foolish One > I Can See You > Ours > Dear John > The Story Of Us" sequence of events and I need to know if I'm completely deluded.
While I'm pretty deadset on this timeline, the one iffy part is Foolish One. Now, I know what you're thinking, "Anon, Foolish One is a breakup song. How could she have written it before they got together," and to that I say I KNOW, BUT, there are SO many lyrical parallels between Foolish One and all the *confirmed John songs that I find it very difficult to believe.
In terms of the timeline, something that I recently learned after listening to Jessica Simpson's book, is that after they had been off for over a year, John had begun pursuing her in mid 2009, whilst she was dating Tony Romo (it's slightly ironic that this whole sequence is preceded by Jessica making mention of the fact that Rascal Flatts asked her to be their replacement opener after Taylor finished touring with them).
She then implies that the two slept together throughout the latter half and the year, and that she confronted him about "sleeping with another/other girls" after reading a quote from him where he said he "only wanted to f*ck girls he'd already f*cked because he didn't want to explain to them that he was interested in them."
(She also makes mention of the fact that he told her she and inspired basically the entirety of Battle Studies including Half Of My Heart. There is a lot of parallel here but that's a topic for another time.)
With that whole messy timeline, I am toying with the idea of this:
Superman:
the early stages of their working relationship.
She pines, hopeful that one day they will be together despite her current entanglement, and his potential entanglements.
Foolish One:
being hit with the sudden realisation that they will Not be together Someday.
Said realisation may or may not be be spurred on by a certain former flame, or a certain comment about whether she actually writes her music, something that is obviously deeply personal to her.
I Can See You:
A mark of a shift in their dynamic
Her waiting is finally paying off, and she is eager to explore it
It is seemingly pre "confession" of interest, but post denial of it.
Ours:
There are now "together" and subscribing to an Us and against the world mentality.
Takes place in the very brief "Happy" stage of the relationship, however despite this there is still a level of distance, something followed up on in the music video
Dear John:
The realisation that she REALLY should've known better.
The immediate fallout from the relationship
"F*ck you, we're done. You're broke, I'm up."
The Story Of Us:
"Hey, what if we just like... talked it out?"
The internal debate of whether or not to offer out an olive branch to someone who caused you great pain, but you still hold a torch for (she described the song as being about "pining" over someone in her journal)
The realisation that she got nothing out of the relationship, despite her high expectations.
This is VERY long, and I am SORRY, but if you took the time to read this, thank you, and if you take the time to respond to my midnight ramblings, THANK YOU🙏
oh no i see foolish one as very much a situationship song like it can absolutely fit “i have a crush and you keep PLAYING WITH IT AND THEN DIPPING”
and i think that does fit his and taylor’s relationship in 2009! like, they were flirting over twitter like, all year. may-december there was lots of flirty tweets. though, i don’t know if it’s about john specifically, or just the general idea of a man? like, that feb 2009 lover diary where she randomly brings up “i feel like i’m the one before the one” is before she really got involved with john and feels very foolish one to me
ALSO ALSO ABOUT OURS
i’m pretty sure it was written before they were Together Together? like? idk she said it was written the week before her 19th birthday and she didn’t break up with taylor lautner until at least the december 14? not that— like, i don’t think her and taylor lautner were ever seriously dating to the point of exclusivity, i think it was just a ‘while we’re both in the same city’ thing, BUT at the very least that implies ours was written before she was exclusive with john? idk fall 2009 is so. so teenage mess
i also think all of the 2010 songs are about her kinda. coming to terms with that. like mine -> innocent -> back to december -> mean -> long live is so. it drives me insane. chosing kindness, trying to apologize to those you hurt, rebuilding self worth— it’s such a fascinating little mini arc, that healing from that heartbreak (amongst other things) set her on

I know the season isn't even out yet but just looking I'm already breaking out in hives. It feels like its overcompensating: "Step right up, ladies and gentlemen we got talking animals, magical cats, a land of candy and absolutely no concern for the main plot! Is this distracting enough for you? Do you like all these bright colours and shiny new things? You've heard of a filler episode, right? Well, get ready for a filler season! Welcome to the next season of rwby, everyone!"
For me personally, the frustrating thing is that I like all these ideas on their own, but I don’t think they’re working for RWBY, especially right now. You want to do an Alice in Wonderland inspired arc? It should be bright and colorful and weird! But that all severely undermines the horror of our previous Volume, so maybe don't do that after the Everything of last season. You want your characters to have the time and opportunity to develop, focusing on introspective questions instead of the action-packed main plot? Sure, go for it, but maybe not at the height of the series' conflict, nine years into the story. I want to shove a basic plot diagram at the writers and point out that they’re interrupting a steady climb towards the climax with... this. There’s a reason why they’re filler episodes, singular, separated events that provide a needed break from the action without derailing it completely. A whole season---especially one that’s shorter than is now average and coming late---is a serious problem for RWBY's pacing and, frankly, makes it look like the writers are stalling while they figure out how the heroes can win when the story has done nothing to prepare them for that monumental challenge. Either that, or we're stretching RT's flagship story out as long as possible. Insert the plea not to pirate here.
And I know, I know, the Volume isn’t out yet and trailers can be misleading, but I’m honestly concerned that there’s nothing here about the main conflict. I have no doubt that the characters will come out of this experience having #LearnedSomething (whether we end up agreeing with their development is another matter entirely), but the trailer makes it seem like it will be a generic confidence boost (Ruby reasserts her desire to help people as the hero), rather than a concrete step towards defeating Salem. There’s no mention of the Relics, the Gods, magic they can use as a weapon, no hint that she’ll improve her silver eyes, or that what’s happening in Vacuo will be anything more than a pre-Volume 10 cliffhanger. What questions does the trailer/the events of Volume 8 imply that Volume 9 will tackle?
Will Ruby regain her confidence after this tragedy?
Will they find Jaune?
Will they regain/reforge their lost weapons?
Will they make it home?
What does all this equal? A reset. The trailer presents this as a Volume where the girls work to get back to exactly where they were at the end of Volume 8: back in Remnant, back with their weapons, back together, back fighting Salem, back to their confident selves. If the only goal is to get home, then yeah, this is literally filler. This entire Volume may exist not to forward the story proper, but to provide a lot of fluff content (like the humor) until what little plot there is gets them back to where they were 2+ years ago. Now, the writer in me DOES expect them to come away with something that will forward the plot, simply because I can’t imagine crafting a whole Volume that doesn’t, but the lack of insight into what that might be---do they meet the Gods? Get new powers? Learn a secret about Salem??---is one of the reasons why I think this is a badly constructed trailer.
And as I mentioned in a separate post, I really do find the lack of action to be odd. Someone responded that RWBY is more than its action sequences and yes, of course, but RWBY is, first and foremost, a combat show. I already laid out the ways previous trailers highlighted the girls’ battles that Volume (even if it’s only those in the first few episodes) and if you look at ANY ‘Best Of’ list, you’ll find nothing but the fights. When you think "RWBY" do you really picture the silly humor in between the fights...or do you think Nevermore, Apathy, Qrow vs. Tyrian, RWBY vs. Paladin, Ironwood vs. Watts, the White Fang, the Hound, etc. Beyond the combat being the most memorable of all RWBY's content, RWBY simply doesn’t exist without its fights. I don’t mean that in a “Monty originally created it to choreograph cool battles, but it’s grown so much since then” way, I mean it in a plot-focused “Our story is about a group of girls going to school to learn how to fight, and they fight grimm, and they fight an extremist group, and then they fight an immortal witch, and they fight her goons, and sometimes they fight each other, and the strongest fighters fight with magic, and when they’re not fighting they’re doing adjacent fighting things like training, taking care of weapons, traveling to the next fight, engaging in politics avoid fights but oops, that failed so now they're fighting again” way. Remove the combat from RWBY and all you’ve got is a disconnected collection of domestic moments/jokes more suitable to a drabble collection than a professional story. RWBY might have a non-combat framework that helps hold it together, but that doesn't mean that combat isn't still 99% of the story's focus and the draw for the audience.
All of which is just to emphasize that if our trailer is a) not giving us any conflict beyond “Get back to where we were in Volume 8” and b) not highlighting the combat that RWBY is built on, then it really does feel like filler in a literal sense. I know we made jokes about this a year back, but right now Volume 9 feels like RWBY’s beach episode. No, not because of Jaune landing on an island with a bunch of girls, but because, like the classic beach episode, our trailer presents this as an interlude where the primary plot remains fairly static and the characters engage in activities that contrast their normal routine. Here’s Haruhi and her friends leaving the host club behind to hang in a water park until they go home. Here’s Team RWBY leaving Remnant to explore a Wonderland until they go home. I know we need to wait to see what the tone of the whole Volume actually is, but even the humor of the trailer feels filler-y to me. In that---as you say, anon---it seeks to distract the audience all on its own, rather than occurring naturally among more plot-focused moments. (Like, for example, Weiss bemoaning the fact that she's never going to sleep again while they try to figure out how to help Mantle). Filler episodes often ignore the plot (and its accompanying worries) to make space for the lighthearted character interactions. Now here come the butt jokes, arm tug-of-wars, and purple raccoons.
Clearly the Volume will at least be tackling Ruby’s doubts---something I SO want to go well---but if the tone skews too lighthearted... yeah. Filler. Honestly, if the Volume does fail to sufficiently engage with Volume 8’s tragedies, I fully expect the fandom to start talking about how the girls deserved a fun, wacky Wonderland trip after everything they've been through, the same way we got a strong cry that they needed to rest in the mansion with tea while the rest of the Kingdom was falling to grimm. Potential filler will likely be seen as something earned by the protagonists (as if they were real people with real needs), rather than a writing mistake.
